Chapter 9 Thursday

“Haylie, 2-A is ringing her call bell again,” Miriam cried out from behind the desk at the nurse’s station. “Go see what she wants.” Donna shook her head. “2-A? Don’t you mean Mrs. Burton?” “You know what I mean,” Miriam responded. “And I’m talking to Haylie, anyway.” She quickly glanced around the unit. “Haylie?” She called out. “Where is that girl?” Haylie rounded the corner of the nursing desk. “I’m here, Miriam. I was just down the hall putting ice in Mr. Crowell’s pitcher.” She held up the pink pitcher and shook it to show Miriam that she had in fact been doing what she’d said she was. Why do I have to do that? Why do I feel that I to have to justify myself to Miriam? Haylie wondered. Oh yes… because I’m immature and incompetent. She remembered Miriam’s hurtful comments from Tuesday, and her stomach knotted with anger. “So go take care of your patient,” Miriam commanded. “I am taking care of my patients. All of them. But I can only do one thing at a time. I’m only human, you know, I’m –” “YOU are a nurse, young lady, human has nothing to do with it.” Miriam quickly stood up and faced Haylie. “You need to exercise some common sense. Mrs. Burton is one day post-op from hip replacement surgery. There could be all kinds of things going on with her! She could be in intolerable pain, or she could be in there bleeding out all over
