A message from our 2023 Season Sponsor.

STAND TOGETHER & FORGE AHEAD

As life gradually returns to normal post pandemic, there is newfound appreciation for things we took for granted in the past…sitting in a crowd, enjoying a live-stage performance, travelling across borders.

Indeed, over the past two years, life as we knew it was suddenly upturned. But in those trying times, we also saw generosity, kindness and solidarity in action. We saw that in healthcare workers on the frontlines. In individuals helping individuals, and in businesses looking beyond the bottom-line to deliver social good.

DBS also did what it could do to help. We provided moratoriums to struggling individuals; disbursed billions of dollars in new loans to businesses; took care of the well-being of our people through mental health programmes; and gave towards various community efforts including to the low-income, elderly and migrant workers.

Thankfully, those dark times are largely behind us. But it is my hope that we will continue to encourage that collective sense of purpose and celebrate humanity’s strength of spirit.

That is why we are glad to renew our partnership with Pangdemonium yet again.

Pangdemonium’s productions not only entertain but also provoke us to consider what makes us human. They also spur us to be better versions of ourselves.

Standing together, we can move on from the challenges of the last few years and forge ahead to build a better world.

WELCOME TO OUR 2023 SEASON

2020-2022 will likely be remembered as the “wilderness years”, with many of us having spent this period groping in the dark, languishing in limbo, lost in time and space.

And we quote the above lyrics from Stephen Sondheim’s Into the Woods because the past two and a half years have indeed been a wild journey into the woods – to battle monsters and move mountains, to hide and fix ourselves, to shield our children and slay giants, to flee the winds and find the path into the light again.

But “the woods” are part of life. They are life itself. And while we are not yet out of the woods, we believe that our wilderness years are what we make of them. So, in 2023, we are bringing you three ass-kicking stories of individuals getting their asses kicked by life…and kicking back.

We kick off the year with the brilliant People, Places & Things, a mindbending journey into a heart of darkness, and out again into the light.

We then have the privilege of staging the award-winning, critically acclaimed modern classic, Doubt: A Parable, a powerful story about navigating the grey areas between light and dark.

And we end the Season, of course, with Into the Woods, the exhilarating, enchanting and enlightening musical masterpiece by the giant of the genre, Stephen Sondheim.

With these stories of people going through their own wilderness, making their way through the woods, our theme for next year’s Season is “People, Places & Things”… Just kidding, it’s “Into the Woods”!

We gladly welcome back our Season Ticket. We graciously welcome you to our 2023 Season. And we gratefully welcome you back to Pangdemomium’s ass-kicking adventures in theatre – stories that illuminate our perilous path ahead, inspire us with hope on our uncharted journey, and instil us with courage at crossroads, with the knowledge that, in the dark of our wilderness, we do not have to be alone in the woods.

INTO THE WOODS TO SLAY THE GIANT, INTO THE WOODS TO SHIELD THE CHILD, TO FLEE THE WINDS, TO FIND A FUTURE, TO SHIELD, TO SLAY, TO FLEE, TO FIND, TO FIX, TO HIDE, TO MOVE, TO BATTLE…”

PEOPLE, PLACES & THINGS

Meet Emma – professional actor, consummate performer, chameleon-like make-believer.

Meet Emma – pathological pretender, compulsive liar, hopeless addict.

Committed into rehab, she desperately clings on to her alter egos and imagined personas, as her world spirals into a surreal abyss. Friends, family members and fellow addicts morph into figments of fantasy, her sense of self fragments, and she is forced to ask: which version of me is the real me?

Together with Emma, we embark on a thrilling, trippy journey. And as we see, hear, and feel everything from her perspective, our own reality begins to fracture, and we find ourselves asking: which version of this story is the truth?

Duncan MacMillan’s brilliant People, Places & Things is a devastating exploration of a person’s desperate need to escape real life, a riveting examination of the parallels between theatre and therapy, between art and addiction, and unlike any theatrical adventure you will have experienced before.

DOUBT: A PARABLE

Fall. 1964. The Bronx.

12-year-old Donald is the first ever Black student at St. Nicholas Church School.

Father Flynn, the popular parish priest, takes the boy under his wing, but the imperious school principal Sister Aloysius is mistrustful of Flynn’s intentions, and begins to suspect him of sexual misconduct.

As accusations and confrontations escalate, naïve young Sister James is caught in the crossfire, and the scandal takes on a whole new dimension when the boy’s mother steps into the fray.

This conflict of conviction, credibility and culture unearths troubling questions of faith, truth and morality, as everyone’s fate hangs in the balance.

Meanwhile, a 12-year-old boy waits in silence…

Adapted into an Oscar-nominated film starring Meryl Streep and Philip Seymour Hoffman, this powerful and shattering play is more relevant and urgent than ever. It challenges us to reflect on our supposed morals, question our faith, and dares us to doubt our long-held beliefs.

INTO THE WOODS

Tony Award Winner

Once upon a time, in a marvellous multiverse of musical fairy-tale heroes and villains…

The Witch, the Wolf, and the Giant, have unleashed pandemonium on the kingdom. Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Jack (of Beanstalk fame), and the Baker, assemble to avenge the evils dealt to the people.

But on their way into the woods, they get entrapped by Daydreams, ensnared by Desires, and enslaved by Wishes. And they discover that villains in real life can be more monstrous than those in fairy tales, and that not everyone has a “happily ever after”.

The late, legendary Stephen Sondheim’s spellbinding music and words combine with James Lapine’s wild and witty script in this ingenious, subversive mashup of our most beloved fairy stories.

Full of heart, humour and honesty, this magical musical has much to teach us about growing up, growing old, love and marriage, parents and children, good and evil, life and death.

Whether you’re 10 or 110, we promise you a journey into the woods you will not soon forget.

Singtel Waterfront Theatre at Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay

Singtel Waterfront Theatre is a purpose-built, medium-sized, multi-format theatre situated along Esplanade – Theatres on the Bay’s busy waterfront. The addition of this new theatre to Esplanade’s existing stable of large performance halls and smaller studio spaces is a dream come true not just for the national arts centre, but also for Singapore’s next generation of artists and audiences. It will also enable Esplanade to commission, produce and present more productions, especially those that tell Singapore and Asian stories. In addition, this new theatre will also support the arts centre in developing and presenting a greater diversity of productions. It will enable homegrown artists and arts groups to scale up their productions for bigger audiences, both in Singapore and overseas, playing a key role in nurturing our talents and bringing people from all walks of life together through the arts.
