CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

THE BENDWAY

Aerial view of Bendway

The current state of the Bendway is a stark juxtaposition of a fleeting riparian habitat being crushed by massive gravel piles and steel structures. All the beach shown is impossible to access without trespassing and maneuvering hazardous unstable gravel paths.

10. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

Sixty percent of the riverfront within Healdsburg city limits is occupied by Syar Industries, a gravel and aggregate supplier for the region. The site is a 100 acre expanse of gravel storage piles that can exceed 60 feet in height and excavated gravel pits that flood yearly.

11. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

Contextual plant studies resulted in the creation of distinct plant zones strategically and appropriately placed with each serving as the catalyst for an extensive habitat restoration.

12. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

Meetings with local community members and landscape architects provided crucial insight into the needs and opinions of the people that will be using this site. It is clear that people want a strong connection between the town and the river.

13. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

The study of the current and projected economic, environmental, and social issues has resulted in the design of three distinct activity zones structured by a circulation, storm water and planting design.

Project boundary

Zone 1: High Density (entrance / recreation)

Pedestrian circulation

• Lifeguarded beaches • River steps at bridge abutment • Picnic area • Site access points / Pedestrian Bridge • Vehicular entrances • Tree walks • Bendway Towers • Playground

Zone 2: Medium Density (economic engine) • Light industrial warehouses and offices • Wine cellar for wine tasting and storage • Restaurants • Edible landscaping

Zone 3: Low Density (riverfront)

• Elevation of pedestrian on site path at 95’ to remain above flood levels • Tree walks / repurposed conveyor structure

17. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

BENDWAY AERIAL

Aerial view of Bendway Park looking south west

This proposal for the quarter mile stretch of riverfront at Bendway Park addresses both the community input and city directives. More importantly, it provides a vision that will re-connect the people of Healdsburg with their river by providing long awaited public access, economic sustainability, and habitat restoration.

18. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

RIVER STEPS

Bendway Park looking East

The Bendway Park design strategically integrates repurposed and proposed elements into a riparian habitat restoration to provide the community with a magnificent, safe, and accessible river front park.

19. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

RAILROAD BEACH

Retrofitted bridge abutment with river steps

The railroad bridge abutment has been retrofitted with river steps that provide safe swimming, fishing and Water Carnival viewing opportunities.

20. CONCEPTUAL - BENDWAY PARK

33. NEW TECHNOLOGIES / DRONE AIDED DESIGN

AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY

The aerial photography abilities I have with my drone allow me to create high quality images and video of a site for design, marketing, and analysis applications.

34. NEW TECHNOLOGIES / DRONE AIDED DESIGN

DRONE MAPPING

By combining the features of the drone with third party software I am able to create precise aerial surveys of project sites in the form of contour / elevation maps, NDVI maps, and 3D scans.

35. NEW TECHNOLOGIES / 3D PRINTING

With a 3D printer I am able to create highly detailed to scale models of site furnishing, topography and well.... anything else!

3D PRINTING

3D printed Staircase concept at (1/8” = 1’-0”) & (1/16” = 1’-0”)

36. NEW TECHNOLOGIES / 3D PRINTING

All models were created and edited in rhino / Sketchup or scanned with an infrared portable 3D scanner then printed on an Ultimaker 3D printer with PLA filament.

37. NEW TECHNOLOGIES / VIRTUAL REALITY

Virtual Reality (VR) is poised to be a revolutionary tool for designers. VR already has a wide range of applications for analysis, design and presentation.

38. NEW TECHNOLOGIES / VIRTUAL REALITY

360 DEGREE SPHERICAL PANORAMAS

360 degree panoramic photos capture every possible view from a single point. These photos are great tools for presentations, site understanding and can be linked together in Google street view style site tours.
