PANMELA CASTRO Bachelor’s in Fine Arts, School of Fine Arts, Federal Univ. of Rio de Janeiro; MA in Contemporary Arts, State Univ. of Rio de Janeiro. Activist artist whose social policy work, primarily focused on gender equality, provides the core inspiration for the content of her provocative paintings. Work challenges patriarchal notions of public space as related to sexism, sexuality, subjectivity and power relations. Panmela has worked with organizations such as the Organization Of American States (OAS), Nike Company, the German Rosa Luxemburg Foundation and the Brazilian Academy of Letters. Founder and President of Rede Nami (http://www.redenami.com/) – a feminist network that uses urban arts to promote women’s rights. Recipient of awards incl. Hutúz Graffiti Artist of the Decade, DVF Awards and Vital Voices Global Leadership Award for human rights. Nominated one of the 150 women that are shaking the world, Newsweek magazine (2012).
