Mining Business Opportunities in Argentina
Copper, lithium, gold and silver emerge as the most attractive minerals in Argentina.
An Unlike other jurisdictions, the Argentine mining industry emerged in the 1990s. A little over a quarter of a century has been enough to place this country among the main exploration countries worldwide: legislative framework and high geological potential (more than 70% of Argentina's areas with potential mineralization have not been subject to prospecting yet) accompanied by staunchly upheld state policies, many new deposits were uncovered or, where already known, got better defined, which led to their becoming busy operating centers or attaining significantly advanced stages. With a contribution of US$3.2 billion, mining turned out Argentina's 6th export set in 2021. It is worth mentioning that 95% of these exports originate from just 4 provinces –San Juan, Santa Cruz,
Catamarca and Jujuy- where the mining industry accounts for over 50% of exports.
Copper and lithium, gold and silver, and also potash symbolize Argentina's outstanding minerals supply. Investments for more than US$30 billion will be required to advance the projects to operation stages.
In parallel with electro mobility, important drilling campaigns are being carried out in copper projects, as well as fast advances in the lithium field: these two metals -keys for the energy transition find in Argentina the best place to invest in. Besides, projects associated with precious metals –gold and silver- continue to make steady progress. A special chapter for potash, a key ingredient for global food supply chain.
According to reports of the National Mining Secretary (Secretaría de Minería de la Nación) published in May 2022, the various mining projects in Argentina stood at the following stages of development:
17 mines in production
