For the past several months, I have been increasingly busy. I find myself juggling what I can only describe as quickly changing priorities from one moment to the next. One minute I’m on the phone, the next I’m sending emails as well as responding to employee requests. To complicate matters, it’s all happening at the same time. This causes me to begin thinking what is going on? It turns out that I suffer from an affliction that is at epidemic levels throughout our society-it’s called multitasking. Multitasking, in a human context, is the practice of doing multiple things simultaneously; believing that each task is being properly completed. During the last week, I have been online researching this so called desired quality, only to find that it does not work. People who multitask believe they’re accomplishing more but they’re actually cutting down on their own productivity. Studies show that only 2%

of people can actually multitask effectively. For the remaining 98% of us mere mortals’ multitasking can do more harm than good. The worst and most dangerous examples of multitasking by any group are those who do most of their work while driving. For example, salesman, delivery drivers, truck drivers, and yes anyone who is using a mobile devise while driving. It has been clearly shown that multitasking and operating a motor vehicle while using a cell phone (hand held or hands free), delays a drivers reaction time as much as having a blood alcohol content of .08% or being legally drunk. Many of us, including myself, think that the ability to juggle work is a standard job requirement. Wanting to impress your employer by taking on more projects than we can accomplish with any degree of efficiency is called chronic multitasking. If this sounds to you more like an affliction than a resume booster that’s because research

has shown again and again that the human mind is not meant to multitask. Even worse, research shows that multitasking can have long term harmful effects on brain functions. Here are few research findings that I borrowed from the internet regarding multitasking: • For students, an increase in multitasking shows poor academic results. • Multitasking takes longer to complete tasks and produces more errors, reducing the productivity up to 40%; thinking it is more effective than it actually is. • When multitasking, people had more difficulty retaining new information. • Multitasking temporarily causes an IQ drop of 10 points (the equivalent of going without sleep for a full night). • Habitual multitasking is less effective than non-multitasking when doing one task at any given time because the ability to focus is impaired. After spending the past few days reviewing as much research as I could, I can honestly say, without a doubt, that multitasking for me does not work.

Track Your Wedding Costs When it comes to planning a wedding, I always advise people to start with a budget. The budget is the framework that tells you how much wedding you can realistically afford. I’m sure lots of folks sit down and write up a proposed budget, but I often wonder how many couples actually track their spending during the wedding planning process. It’s easy to write some loose figures down on a piece of paper, it’s another thing to accurately track your wedding costs. Luckily, there is no shortage of tools to help you track how much you’re actually spending. Without a reliable system for tracking your expenses, your budget is just a guess about what your spending will be if all goes according to plan. News flash!… it never goes exactly according to plan. It is far too easy to round numbers, forget to include taxes, or remember where exactly your money went. Whether you write things down on paper, a spreadsheet, or use budgeting software, you must keep track of every single cost related to your wedding, no matter how small. You’d be surprised how the little things add up when nobody’s looking, and then you’re left wondering how you blew your budget by thousands of dollars. I highly recommend a free money management service like mint.com. With this service, you link bank accounts, credit cards, assets and liabilities to your account, and mint tracks every transaction that takes place. While this service will track all of your transactions, you can set specific budgets or goals for things like—you guessed it—weddings! Then as you go down the list of transactions from the week, just designate each one that was a wedding expense. Mint does the heavy lifting and make it easy to track how much you’ve spent. Having accurate data will also allow you to make adjustments along the way. Let’s say you’ve been doing a pretty good job of sticking to your budget, but halfway through the planning process you’ve actually spent several hundred dollars more than you had planned to. If you have no way of tracking your expenses you might not know that you’re over budget. But with accurate records, you can go through your data to see where you overspent. You’ll also know the amount of savings you need to find in other areas in order to stay on target. Bonus, using a service like mint will not just help your wedding plans, but your finances in general. It’s a great way to see where your money goes, and it presents the info in

easy to digest charts and graphs. You can set savings goals, budgets toward specific items, and even track your net worth. If you and your spouse both track your finances, you’ll have a much better understanding of your spending and savings habits, and you can use the data to frame a discussion about how you will handle finances once you’re married. Hopefully you see the importance and benefit of tracking your wedding expenses. There’s nothing worse than spending money you don’t have and realizing it after it’s too late. But with a good budget and accurate spending records, you won’t have any worries on your big day. See more at: http://thefreewedding.com.

10. Don't Rock the Cash Bar - When it comes to alcohol at your reception, what you serve is entirely up to you. Whether you choose to serve a full bar, limited cocktails, Beer and Wine, or no alcohol at all will be based on various factors including budget. The one option that is not recommended is a Cash Bar. Your guests should be gracious enough to accept what is being offered to them. If however a guest feels the need for a drink selection that is not offered, chances are that he or she will be resourceful enough to find it. Also, request that bartenders not put out tip jars. If you are hosting the bar, tell your catering contact that you are happy to pay gratuity to the bartender(s) but that you do not want your guests to feel obligated to tip. 9. Go flat! A huge number of brides give feedback that they wish they had worn flats, having kicked off their heels during the reception. As a bride you can expect to be standing for 8-12 hours on your wedding day. Be sure to break in your shoes well in advance. Even

when wearing flats, unexpected blisters can form after a few hours on your feet. 8. Have a little faith. D.J.'s are perhaps the wedding vendor most micromanaged by couples. Too many song requests may actually impede the flow of your party. You hire your D.J. to judge when to play what music. You wouldn't instruct your Caterer step by step on how to prepare food, or your Photographer on what angles and lenses to use. Limit your D.J. request list to a few favorites and a do-not-play list of only the songs you cannot stand. Do not get carried away and have some trust. 7. Prioritize, prioritize, prioritize. What really matters most to you, the photographer, the music and dancing, the food and wine, the decorations, or being able to accommodate a large guest list? Put your money towards what you care about. You will have regrets if you skimp on what really counts. When you, the Bride and Groom are not footing the bill yourselves however, you may have to forfeit some financial decision-making. If this is the

case you will need to compromise on certain priorities or if you really want that pricey photographer offer to pay for one yourself. 6. Bibbity Bobbity Boo. Wedding Dress shops are notorious for having your dress shipped in at the last minute. Think about it, if you owned a Wedding Dress Boutique you wouldn't want every brides dress held at your shop for nine+ months before their weddings. Schedule your first fitting well before your wedding. Your final dress fitting should be no less than 1 week prior to your wedding so that alterations can still be made. Tuxedo rentals for all attendants must be tried on, that includes Dad. Whether the Tailor seemed to take precise measurements or not, too many men still show up at weddings with high waters or baggy tuxes. 5. Don't hit the road, Jack. Your wedding day is one of the biggest, most important days of your life. You will be exhausted and a bit disorderly the following day. Going away is the last thing you will want to worry about. Wait at least a couple of days before venturing on your honeymoon. Your wits will thank you. 4. Last night of single life. DO NOT hold your Bachelor or Bachelorette party the night before your wedding! This may seem like a no-brainer but many brides and grooms still practice the archaic ritual of drinking all night on that fatal evening. It is simply not worth it, as the Bride/Groom and your attendants will no doubt feel tired, look tired, have a hangover, or worse be sick walking down the aisle. If necessary, request that any out of town attendants arrive a day earlier to help

you to prepare and celebrate a different night. 3. No Guidance. With no Director there are too many details left to too many people at your ceremony. Having a Wedding Coordinator allows for one person to coordinate your wedding party processional, music, minister, seating guests and to resolve any unexpected last minute complications. A Coordinator will ease the stress level of everyone, including you, tremendously on your wedding day. So if your location does not include a Wedding Day Coordinator who also directs your rehearsal, hire your own. A Wedding Coordinator may be much more affordable than you think. 2. Stretching yourself too thin. As the bride you will make everyone around you crazy by waiting until the last minute in planning and finalizing details. If you have a hard time planning and prioritizing on your own then get help. You don't want to be remembered as “one of those brides” that put everything off and then expected her friends and family to pick up the pieces, do you? Do not commit yourself to social events the day before your wedding. This day is meant for you to wrap up loose ends, beautify yourself, attend your rehearsal and rehearsal

dinner in many cases, and most importantly get some amount of rest for the day ahead. You are going to need it! 1. High demands. Try to keep in mind that although your Bridesmaids and Groomsmen may offer you extra help, these friends can become taken advantage of. The only "official obligations" of wedding party members are emotional support, the financial expense of wedding attire and travel, participation in the rehearsal and the obvious role on your wedding day. In the case of the MOH or BM, reception toasts are traditional as well. Other help that these individuals may offer should not be viewed as duties, but rather as acts of kindness including: setting up/tearing down, transporting ceremony goods, throwing a bridal shower or other party, distributing gratuities, and any other help that is offered. Remember to be thoughtful towards your attendants. Bridesmaids may not be comfortable in 4 inch heels, purchasing new jewelry or paying to have their hair or makeup professionally styled. Do not forget to personally thank any bridal party members for taking part in your wedding, as well as family members who gave you assistance. A small thank you gift is always appreciated.

DIY Paper Wedding Flowers Floral arrangements definitely add to the beauty of any wedding, but they can also eat up a large portion of your wedding budget. What if you could get the same visual impact for a fraction of the cost, or even free? Well, here is a great way to do just that: DIY paper wedding flowers. With a little practice, and some patience, you can create everything from bridal bouquets to Boutonnières with paper. Paper flowers mimic what is found in nature, but they are far more durable—they won’t wilt or droop. Another benefit of paper flowers is that they are always in season. Have a favorite flower? Chances are you can find an online tutorial for ways to make it with paper. You can create pretty much anything you

can dream up, and you’re not limited by which flowers happen to be in season for your wedding. Because these are made of paper, you can create them in any color to match your wedding color scheme. You can even get effects that would be impossible with real flowers, such as using different paper textures, making the flowers larger-than-life for a really stunning visual, or incorporating printed patterns

included with every rental!

that match your wedding decor. Get creative and have fun with it! These paper flowers will take some time and effort to create, but it’s not as hard as you may think. The process will go a lot faster with some help, so get your bridesmaids together for a flower making party. Each bridesmaid could make her own bouquet. Pages from books, maps, and even old newspaper can be turned into little works of art. Not only are paper flowers eco-friendly, but they will last forever as a wonderful keepsake from your wedding day! See more at: http://thefreewedding.com.

Tax Refunds And Bankruptcy by Christy M. DeMelfi, Esq. It’s that time of year again when people are filing their taxes. Even though some people dread tax time, many look forward to it because of the tax refunds they receive. Most people consider these refunds a “windfall” because it is money they do not receive monthly. If you have outstanding debts, you’ll start to receive “special tax refund deals” from creditors offering to settle for a portion of what is owed. I suggest not being too quick to jump at these deals. Remember, settling one or two of your debts with your tax refund

YOU Deserve Better... YOU Really Do!

may not solve your problem. Often, people think it looks better to settle a few debts before filing for bankruptcy. Unfortunately, that’s not true. Any payments made to creditors within 90 days of your bankruptcy filing must be disclosed on a form called “Statement of Financial Affairs”. If the payment was substantial, it could actually complicate your bankruptcy as the trustee may feel you favored one creditor over another. Therefore, unless your tax refund is going to settle all your debts, do not bother to make deals with a few. It is a much better use of your tax refund money to pay for your bankruptcy filing and truly start over with a clean slate.

FINANCIAL FOCUS: What Do Low Oil Prices Mean for Investors? Provided by Edward Jones As you’ve no doubt noticed, your trips to the gas station have been a lot more pleasant these past several months. There’s not much doubt that low oil prices have been welcome to you as a driver. But when oil is cheap, is that good for you as an investor? There’s no clear-cut answer. But consider the following effects of low oil prices: • Positive impact on economy — When you spend less at the gas pump, relative to recent years, what will you do with your savings? Like most people, you’ll probably spend most of it on goods and services. If you multiply the amount of your increased spending by the millions of other Americans who are also saving money on gas, you can see that you and your fellow consumers are likely adding billions of dollars to the economy. Typically, a strong economy is also good for the financial markets — and for

the people who invest in them. • Different results for different sectors — Different sectors within the financial markets may respond in different ways to low oil prices, even if the overall effect is generally positive. For example, businesses such as consumer goods companies and auto manufacturers may respond favorably to cheaper oil and gas. But the picture might be quite a bit different for energy companies. You could spend a lot of time and effort trying to adjust your investment portfolio in response to low oil prices. In fact, you may well want to consult with your financial professional to determine which moves might make sense for your individual situation. Yet there’s actually a bigger lesson to be learned here: Don’t overreact to temporary developments. The recent decline in oil prices has certainly had an economic

impact, but no one can predict how long these prices will stay low or what other factors may arise that would affect the financial markets. That’s why you can’t reconfigure your portfolio based on particular events, whatever they may be — oil price drops, interest-rate fluctuations, political squabbles at home, natural disasters in faraway lands, and so on. If you can keep from being overly influenced by specific events, you may be able to gain at least two key benefits: First, by not making trades constantly in reaction to the headlines of the day, you can avoid piling up heavy fees and commissions —costs that can reduce the return rate on your investments. Second, you’ll find that if you aren’t always thinking about what’s going on in the world today, you can focus your investment efforts more intensely on where you want to be tomorrow. The most successful investors set long-term goals and don’t focus on factors they cannot control, such as oil prices, interest-rate changes or other economic events. Instead, these investors make adjustments, as necessary, to accommodate changes in their goals as well as other changes, such as revisions in tax laws — but they basically stick to their same approach for the long term. So be aware of low oil prices, but don’t get so “pumped” about them that you sludge up your consistent investment strategy — because that strategy has the energy to keep you moving toward your important objectives. It’s Tax Time! by Alice Taylor, CEO & Tax Preparer, Honest Abe's Tax Services Federal Personal Income Tax was proposed in 1812, developed in 1812 to fund the War of 1812, but never imposed as the war ended. In 1861 a tax was imposed to fund the U.S. Civil War, repealed and replaced in 1862. In 1894 the first “peace time” income tax was put in place, it proved impractical until the 16th Amendment was passed in 1913. The income tax code was written in 1913 and has been modified over the years since. Until 1935 tax returns were filed without benefit of an “identifying number” (Social Security Numbers did not begin to be issued until 1935). Up until 1986, claiming dependents on your tax return was based on an honor system. In 1986, over 7 million dependents disappeared when tax law required a SSN for each dependent on the tax return. Due to an abuse of the EIC benefits, IRS advised preparers and taxpayers in 2010 that beginning in January 2011 dependents claimed had to be your natural child or you had to provide proof that your relative child or foster child was legally in your custody. This was done due to the illegal “sharing” of dependents. To further “fix” this issue, in December 2012 Congress backdated to January 2012 that when filing taxes and claiming dependents, with EIC benefits, taxpayers must provide proof to the preparer that the dependents lived with the taxpayers. Failure to do so would result in penalties to the taxpayer and preparer. Earned Income Credit (EIC) was enacted in 1975 to help give credits/refunds to taxpayers. It has been expanded and changed on numerous occasions which include the Tax Reform Act of 1986 and further in the years 1990 and forward. Further “cracking down” on EIC abuse, the IRS is looking more closely where EIC benefits are being issued to taxpayers from self-employment income. They are looking at “required record keeping” to prove your income. They are looking more closely at “home bound income” such as daycare, house-keeping, handy man, auto mechanic, etc. If you have such income you should consult with a qualified preparer. Refund Anticipation Loans (RALs) began in the 1980s with IRS electronic filing. It was a short-term, high interest rate bank loan, secured by the anticipated refund, which had an APR of up to 250%. It allowed you to get your refund faster and/or to pay your tax preparation fees. It included the additional bank fees. At the end of the program, your refund was available in 24 hours. In late 2010 various opponents of the program put “heat” on the IRS that these loans were

equivalent to payday and title loans, which are high-profit, low-risk loans marketed toward the working poor. The result: the IRS in Jan 2011 stopped providing a “debt indicator” to the banks, thus making the loans higher risk, and many banks dropped the program. Only a few banks provided the program in 2012. Only one bank remained in January 2013. Some agencies now offer a Credit Line based on your credit and history (with high fees). They may illegally “require you to have your taxes prepared at an affiliated firm”. Your only legal obligation is to repay the loan. Your refund now comes in 7 to 21 days. The only advantage to the existing bank products is for paying your tax prep fees. Your refund comes in the same time frame as without the bank loan. Unpublished pieces of important information about the Affordable Care Act (ACA) that taxpayers should know are that: (1) Many people who would not file a tax return but had the market place premium discounted insurance must file a return to “reconcile” the premium tax credit; (2) All income in your household comes into any issues in filing ACA penalty forms with your tax returns, Social Security and dependents part time jobs included; (3) If you had no insurance you have to file, even though they are stating they believe 26 0f 30 million people without insurance will qualify for an exclusion to the penalties. by Carl Simchena Bernie Witkowski, aka Bernie Wyte, was born in New York and was a fourth generation clarinet player. However, his talent didn’t stop with playing the clarinet; he also played sax, accordion, flute, drums and organ. In addition, he wrote the words and music to many songs and introduced Bernie Witkowski new dances. He also found time to conduct a successful radio show. The Bernie Witkowski Orchestra introduced many of the figure dances popular with polka dancers everywhere. These songs included “Side By Side,” “Swing And Sway,” “Grasshopper,” “Merry-go-Round,” and others. Among his hits were “The Fire Polka,” “Hey Krajewski Polka” and “Hot Pretzels.” Although excelling in Polka music, the Bernie Witkowski Orchestra was at home with the cha-cha, twist, fox-trot, and even rock and roll. Over time, The Bernie Wyte Orchestra toured throughout the United States and, for many years, played at Madison Square Garden in New York City for the Harvest Moon Polka Contest. In 1971, because of his many achievements, Bernie Witkowski was inducted into the Polka Music Hall of Fame. A few years prior to his induction, Bernie competed on the NBC program “Live Like A Millionaire”. He won the contest by playing the “Clarinet Polka.” As a winner, he received an amount of interest (2% of one million dollars), a Pontiac, an RCA Color TV, a one

The Bronx Wanders: One Part "Oldies”, Two Parts “Rock N’ Roll” The Greater Hazleton Concert Series opens the 2015 half of its concert season with the Bronx Wanderers. One Part “Oldies”, Two Parts “Rock N’ Roll”… THE BRONX WANDERERS are the ”perfect musical storm”, effortlessly creating the perfect level of synergy between generations and the music, the family and the rockin’ band that pulls it all together. The Bronx Wanderers will appear at the Hazleton High School Auditorium, 1601 West 23rd Street, on Tuesday, February 24. The Bronx Wanderers were first launched 10 years ago basically as a whim. Vinny Adinolfi had already enjoyed plenty of success as a goldrecord producer, label executive and publisher. Vinny was prodded by friends and family to put together “a rock n’ roll band” that would feature his 10 and 14-year old sons. The boys were already turning into little music dynamos so Vinny decided to have some fun and to give it a whirl. Almost a decade later, the BRONX WANDERERS have turned into a sensation with performances everywhere from casinos such as the Mohegan Sun to major performing arts centers around the country. Fans marvel at the group’s ability to recapture the original sound of the hits in the BRONX WANDERERS’ repertoire. Thanks to Vinny’s producing expertise and his own musical talent, even songs by the major hitmakers such as Frankie Valli and Paul Anka sound virtually note for note “true” to the studio versions that became such favorites. In ad-

dition to its authentic sound, the BRONX WANDERERS have become known for their terrific stage presence and high energy shows. Of course Vinny and the rockin’ band contribute mightily to the energy level; however, “Vinny’s boys” now also have their own original music rock band and they bring that seasoned energy and strong “wow” factor to the Bronx Wanderers’ show. With favorites like “Sherry”, “Runaway”, “We Gotta Get Out Of This Place”, “Teenager in Love”, “There’s a Kind of Hush”, “Tie A Yellow Ribbon”, “Put Your Head On My Shoulder”, “Looking for an Echo” and even Coldplay’s “Viva La Vida”, this show positively dazzles the listener with a non-stop powerhouse of hits right from the word “go” (“Go, Johnny, go, go go!”). ... So, yes, this is most definitely the best two hours of 50s, 60s and 70s Rock N’ Roll that your heart can handle before it explodes in pleasure! With superlative vocals and musicianship, dynamic enthusiasm and a genuine love of the music they perform, The Bronx Wanderers recreate the magic of the era and build an energetic bond with their audience, guaranteeing an evening of toe-tapping, hand-clapping and dancing in the aisles all night long. Their show tells the stories and plays the music that will take you as close as you can get to having lived the actual experience. The Wanderers arrive at every show with new material all the time but never leave out the fa-

Broad Street As It Was Then— Revisited! Part 5 by Marolyn Pensock Now imagine that we are standing in the very center of Broad Street at the corner of Broad and Wyoming Streets. To our left we can see the former Trader’s Bank Building. To our right is the former Markle Bank Building, now the Hayden Tower. Soon these two buildings will, I feel sure, sport brand new signage reflecting the most recent change in their history, as they are joined together by a new walking bridge over Wyoming Street. These buildings have once again become a vital part of our downtown as the DeAngelo Brothers International Headquarters because of two hometown businessmen. The former Hazleton National Bank Building, on the corner of Broad and Laurel Streets is also part of their company. So, in our walk up Broad Street, we have seen the past connected to the future of Hazleton through this vision. Hazleton’s bank buildings were a business hub unto themselves. They were, and to some extent still are, the home to many of our needed professions and services, medical, legal, dental, chiropractic, beauty, brokers, real and stock, literary, Chamber of Commerce and broadcasting. I’ll bet that many of you can remember visiting one or all of these buildings for a particular service. A friend off mine remembers seeing an event while looking up at the Markle Bank Building one day when he was just about ten years old, in the late fifties or early sixties. I am trying to verify the incident. Can anyone help me? As he walked down Broad Street his eyes went upward where he saw a figure, a blur of blue, falling from the Markle Bank Building. He remembers that the man died, but not how or why, he came to such a tragic end.

Now, it is time to turn our attention to the businesses which continued up Broad Street. The S. S. Kresge Store, you know the one in which the merchandise was $1 not 5 or 10 cents. This store had a green sign with gold letters, while the S.S. Kresge Five and Ten Cents Store in the block between Laurel and Church Streets had a red sign with gold letters. As for me, even though I had a job at F. W. Woolworth’s Five and Ten Cent Store, for the life of me, I can’t remember the color of that sign. I do remember Mr. Zook, the manager, and all the wonderful people who worked there in the same time period as I. These chain stores crossed the nation and are part of the history of Main Street, USA. They enjoyed their level of success, in my opinion, because of the local, hometown people, who staffed the stores, not only because of their unique approach to merchandising for their time. When you are remembering stores which have occupied a particular block over a long period of time, you are sure to have them in a mixed up order. So I say, please bear with me. Let me know if you remember others. There was the New York Sample Shop owned by the Finegold Family of West Diamond Avenue. That store had such beautiful windows decorated with mannequins wearing the latest styles. Later on came the Clothes Hut which catered to the teenagers in the sixties and seventies, managed by the late Debbie Murray, wife of Don Murray of WAZL fame. I can not forget to mention Jay Silverman’s Lingerie Shoppe. She handled such beautiful undergarments and gave you her personal expertise with your fittings. Her clients always came away looking like a million because

of perfectly fit undergarments. Howard’s Shop was owned by the Frumkin Family. They featured, fine jewelry, luggage, leather goods, quality giftware and so much more. If I remember rightly, they had a stairway to a second floor showroom. Mr. and Mrs. Howard Frumkin were the parents of Mark Frumkin, who recently retired from his Howard’s Jewelry Shop in Laurel Mall. Men’s clothing could be had on that side of the street in the Ben Gauz Men’s Shop. Fine quality clothes with a personalized fit for you. They even had their own personal label hand sewn into your topcoats. The men could be seen window shopping there, while the ladies did their own shopping. One didn’t have to walk far if one wanted a meal or a snack or some fine candy. There was the Dove Restaurant owned by the Saras Family. If you looked down from the eighth floor side window of the Markle Bank, you could see the many plants that Mr. Saras, Sr. had growing on the roof At Easter time, the Saras’ specialized in Easter Candy decorated eggs. They made them in all sizes with a space on the top to add a name. Many a time I just stood and window shopped, imaging how delicious they all would taste. That block was also home to the Palace Restaurant owned by the Deakos Family. Thankfully their building remains standing and will add an authentic touch to our newly planned streetscape facades. The Copper Kettle joined all these great places for lunch when we had a large workforce in the business and banks of Broad Street. Henry Toth of the Newspaper Agency had a card and magazine shop in one of the storefronts. The Greco Family purchased many of the buildings; and Dr. Victor Greco, Jr. and Dr. Leah Ciotola had their offices along that block. The Greco Family also opened their Apothecary Shop next to the bank. I remember what wonderful candles they sold. Their store had a marvelous aroma when you entered their doors. Tony Barto’s SunRay Drug Store anchored the corner. It sold so much. The aisles were crammed full with merchandise. The windows were bursting with so much merchandise, too. You name it, Tony sold it. There was even a place to pick up a quick bite to eat in the rear. I really missed the Sun Ray when it was later torn down. Of course the city gained a nice touch because it made way for a small park along a wider Laurel Street. It was the people of Hazleton who brought life to Broad Street during the past century. I believe it will be the people of the Greater Hazleton area who will again bring life to Broad Street. There is a family thread woven into these articles about Broad Street. Next month I will pick up that thread as we continue to revisit it and hopefully learn from the past. You may send me your recollections at mrs49@ptd.net.

New App Blocks Annoying Ads Online

Important Tips For Keeping Your Home And Business Safe And Secure by Bruce Schlauch, Owner & Operator of Advanced Computer & Electronic Specialties Security systems for home and business are an integral part of property management strategy. There are many different reasons you should have one, here are just a few! • Appearance - Unsecured offices are viable reasons not to take a business seriously. A padlock or chain between two handles makes it look unprofessional. Would you give your credit card number if you knew it was going to be stored on a computer in an office that doesn't have a security system? More valuable than your property, your business reputation could be damaged. • Burglars - Security systems come with stickers telling criminals that you have one, not to mention cameras around the building should be a visual clue. The sticker alone can convince them to move along. Be the home/office that burglars walk away from, not toward. • Systems alert authorities - Most modern security systems can alert the appropriate authorities to several different kinds of emergencies: break-ins, fires, and floods. When burglars hears an alarm, they know the authorities are not far behind. • Vandals and squatters – Vandals like to hide in the shadows their main enemy is motiondetection lights. Vandals aren't looking for

money or computers or financial data. Some just want to destroy property, or use it for any number of things. Have motion-sensitive lights, let them know they've chosen the wrong building. • Lawsuit Protection - A video record of everything that happens in and around your building will provide a formidable defense against grifters looking for a quick buck by accusing you of some negligence or action for which they can sue. • Save Money on Insurance - A secure, safe building with a good alarm system is more attractive investment for an insurance firm to make, and those with good security can almost always find a better rate on a policy. Your office is your business's fortress. A good security system protects it from not only burglary, but vandalism, fire, and floods. If a high-end system is too pricey, get what you can afford now and upgrade later. Call Advanced Computer and Electronic Specialties for you Security needs 570 9260193.

(NAPSA)-When it comes to advertising, consumers have the right to fast-forward through commercials on television, or simply mute the TV until the show comes back on. In print publications, readers can just skip over ads with their eye, staying focused on the next article. For Internet users, it's a much different playing field and advertisers know it. However, all hope is not lost. There is a way to block ads while surfing the Web on your PC or mobile device. It's called Adblock Plus. By installing this free program for the most popular web browsers like Chrome, Firefox, Safari, Internet Explorer or Opera, users can enjoy ad-free content while they surf. The same goes for Android or iOS mobile users. Download the Adblock Plus app and you don't have to put up with those in-video ads before you watch the latest YouTube video. It also blocks ads in your Facebook and Twitter feeds. Adblock Plus even asked users to join them by signing an Acceptable Ads Manifesto. Adblock Plus began Acceptable Ads to allow advertisers who offer ads that are not annoying the opportunity for their ads to be seen. Of course, if users want to see zero ads, they can do that with no problems. In the 21st century, it is now possible for consumers to block ads online, a welcome trend for those who value privacy and clean content on the Internet. For more tips on blocking ads while surfing the Web or to install Adblock Plus on your PC or mobile device for free, go to www.adblockplus.org. INSURED & LICENSED HIC #102653

February Is National Pet Dental Month! by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital One of the easiest to check and most overlooked aspects of keeping your pet healthy, is a healthy mouth. If you haven't done so recently (and don't feel bad if you haven't, most people don't), pick up a lip and look at your pet's back teeth in a well lit area. Large chunks of brown tartar, red, eroding gums, and bad breath are all easily recognizable signs of an unhealthy mouth. Most people seems to think, that bad teeth is a problem that is limited to the mouth. Unfortunately, this just isn't true. Bad teeth frequently cause liver trouble, kidney trouble, and heart trouble in animals. I have cured a number of heart mummers in dogs and kidney problems

in cats simple by cleaning their teeth and treating with antibiotics. More importantly, bad teeth cause pain in animals the same as they do for people. Dogs and cats are much more tolerant of mouth pain, then we humans. Just because your animal is eating, doesn't mean that everything is O.K. If you notice signs of bad teeth, this is also an indication that your pet is in pain. In an attempt to give all the Hazleton Area pets a nice white smile and better breath, we are offering 10% off all dental procedures with the ad in this paper through the end of February.

Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori Top 10 Valentine Collectibles by Lori Verderame

Valentine’s Day falls on February 14th and honors the Christian martyr, St. Valentine as well as the Roman goddess of marriage, Juno. Persecuted by the Roman Emperor in 273 AD, St. Valentine’s feast day is now highlighted with the gifting of flowers, sharing symbols of love, and sending romantic cards. While St. Valentine presented the flowers from his garden to young lovers in an effort to promote the Catholic sacrament of matrimony, the February holiday that bears his name has sparked the exchange of various works of art and antiques. Some of the most popular Valentine’s keepsakes from the antiques world are: 1. Valentine Cards. These small tokens are exchanged between childhood friends and star crossed lovers alike. Examples from the early 1900s come in the form of post cards and are worth $5-$10. Vintage examples from the World War II era range in value from $10-$20 depending on condition, market, artist, and sentimental message (Pictured:Valentine’s card, circa 1945-55). 2. Courting lamps. The Victorians gave us restrictions on courtship in the form of the courting lamp. The courting lamp had graduated markings on the glass to indicate minutes. The marks showed the amount of time left before the fuel source expired and your lover must be on his way home. Today, these rare Valentine’s keepsakes are worth $50-$100. 3. Candy containers. Glass candy containers from the early 1900s came in all shapes and sizes. They are widely collected and range in value from $50 to several hundred dollars.

4. Chocolate molds. Chocolate molds are very popular, particularly on the day when an abundance of chocolate is exchanged and consumed. Metal chocolate molds which date back to the late 19th Century are the most sought after examples that collectors look for and they are expensive… valued between $500 and $2500 for fine examples. 5. Jewelry. There is nothing quite like getting a piece of fine jewelry featuring gold, silver, or another precious metal and gemstones. Costume jewelry is also a popular Valentine’s gift by makers such as Sarah Coventry, Weiss, Trifari, Coro, Monet, Maravella, etc. (Pictured: Antique Victorian amethyst necklace). 6. Candy boxes. Russell Stover, Godiva, and Whitman candy boxes on a living room coffee table spoke volumes about this winter holiday. Once these delicious chocolates were devoured, the candy boxes—of decorated embossed cardboard—were saved through the years. Today, candy boxes in the shape of hearts command $2$10 at antique shops. 7. Hair crafts. From circa 1850-1890, weaving human hair was a popular craft project. Women would save their hair from a hairbrush, place it into a hair receiver and use it later as a material for weaving watch fobs, bracelets, and framed hair flowers. These items were given as presents to loved ones on Valentine’s Day. 8. Dance cards. In the early 1900s, a dance card was a coveted and highly personal object. Some cards were worn like oversized lockets around the neck of the prettiest girl at the party. For some Valentine’s sweethearts, dance cards were

made of a metal cover with thin sheets of bone used like paper to write a future dance partner’s name promising him the next dance. These rare pieces of Americana are not easy to find and range in value from $50 to $75 depending on condition. 9. Vintage couture. Winter hats, coats, scarves, and formal gloves from that bygone night on the town in celebration of Valentine’s Day are all the rage. Look for period hats of faux fur or felt, and leather gloves with fanciful detailing at thrift shops, antiques stores, and flea markets. You will have to save your pennies to buy some of these name brand pieces with the highly sought after hats ranging in value from $250 to $500 each (Pictured: Woven hair picture, circa 1880-1900). 10. Flower vases. When you receive that wonderful Valentine bouquet, it is wonderful to enjoy the blooms and the fragrance. However, once the roses wilt, the vase from the florist becomes the keepsake. Many of these florist vases from circa 1930 to 1950 have stood the test of time. Ceramic pieces by Royal Haeger, McCoy, and other firms are cherished Valentine collectibles today. In good condition, they command $125 to $150. This Valentine’s Day as you make new memories, don’t forget to cherish the old ones with antiques and collectibles. Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and awardwinning TV personality, Dr. Lori presents antique appraisal events nationwide. Frank Perdue Bio Collects Business, Life Lessons (NAPSA)-It takes a tough man to build a thriving business, and Frank Perdue was certainly the man for the task. From a small chicken farm on the eastern shore of Maryland he built a family company that today employs 19,000 people and sells in more than 100 different countries. But Frank Perdue was a gentle and caring man, too, and his legacy is filled with employees and charities that valued his friendship and largesse. "Tough Man, Tender Chicken: Business & Life Lessons from Frank Perdue," published Dec. 1, 2014 by Significance Press, is an

insightful biography of the person so indelibly identified with chickens. Frank's widow, Mitzi Perdue, has exquisitely painted a life portrait of her husband, whose down-home presence in groundbreaking TV commercials won the hearts of millions and created the first successful branded chicken products in the world. Frank Perdue was an incisive businessman, able to cut to the heart of a problem in a flash and lead an ever-growing enterprise to new levels of innovation and accomplishment. He knew his company down to the smallest detail, often calling his managers in the middle

A new book about a successful entrepreneur could be inspiring to many.

of the night when he had a new idea or discovered the solution to a vexing problem, and he encouraged his co-workers to take risks and make decisions to build and improve the business. Yet, he was a compassionate man who visited workers in the hospital, called them personally to express his sympathy when a parent died, and supported the small farmers who worked Perdue Farms to bring the best-quality chicken to consumers across the country and around the world. But this book is more than a biography; it is an opportunity to learn from Frank Perdue. Every chapter is summed up with his lessons that apply both to business and life. Mitzi Perdue also highlights the Ethical Will that her husband left for his heirs-along with a unique, thriving company. Frank's mandates to "Be honest always," "If you say you will do something, do it," "Treat all people with courtesy and respect, no exceptions" and so many more are hallmarked throughout the book in the story of this remarkable man. Whether your interest is business, selfhelp, biography or history, "Tough Man, Tender Chicken" is an indispensable reading and learning experience. It is available at www. frankperduebook.com, amazon.com, and via Kindle and Nook.

Feline Leukemia: A Cat Owner’s Worst Nightmare by Jeanie Donahue at The Pet Care Clinic by Dalice Every cat owner’s worst nightmare is finding out their beloved kitty has tested positive for the feline leukemia virus (FELV). It’s one of the more well-known viruses among cat owners, largely due to its potentially devastating consequences. Feline leukemia, unlike human leukemia, is highly contagious. If you find out that one of your cats is infected with this virus, not only are you faced with the likely possibility that it will be fatal, but you also have to worry that your other cats will test positive also. Large, multi-cat households have been completely wiped out by feline leukemia. Cats pass the virus to other kitties through saliva, nasal secretions, urine, feces, prior to birth from an infected mom or after birth from her milk, through bite wounds, grooming of each other, and by sharing food dishes and litter boxes. Kittens are much more likely to catch the virus than are adult cats, due to their immature immune systems. But adult cats can absolutely acquire feline leukemia also. FELV infection has two stages. In both stages,

the virus is present in the blood. In the first stage, it’s only in the blood and some cats can fight off the virus. However, those who cannot fight off the virus go on to the second stage in which the bone marrow is infected. At this point, almost all cats will remain infected with the virus for the rest of their lives. Clients often ask how long their FELV positive cats will live. Unfortunately, there’s no way to predict. Some live a few weeks after diagnosis, some a few months and some live a few years. At this time, there is no cure for FELV.The most important thing for you to take away with you: ALL cats should be tested for FeLV. Especially outdoor cats who have been exposed, and

any cat/kitten that is about to be adopted. KEEP CATS INDOORS! Other than contracting FELV, FIV or an upper respiratory infection, there are so many other reasons to keep kitties inside where it’s safe: cars, antifreeze, car engines, poisoning, fighting, starvation, animal abuse, predators, getting trapped, internal/external parasites and drowning are just some of the perils a cat can face outdoors. Predation on birds is also a legitimate concern. Keep in mind: the average lifespan of an indoor cat is 12-15 years while that of an outdoor cat is 2-3 years. Please feel free to call us if you have any questions or concerns. We welcome your call and will be happy to answer any of your questions.

Arthur Lee Maye: Baseball And Singing Star by Rev. Connell A. McHugh In the past there have been quite a few athletes who have excelled in two Major sports such as baseball and basketball and baseball and football. Jim Thorpe, regarded by many as the world's greatest athlete, was a great Olympian track star,' a tremendous football player and even played Major league baseball for several seasons hitting .253 for his career. Bo Jackson was an All American football player who became a successful NFL running back and was a good Major league power hitter for the 534 games he appeared in averaging nearly 6 homeruns per 100 at bats. Ken Strong another All-American running back for NYU, who led the nation in ground gaining, played AA minor league baseball for Hazleton in 1930. Strong had 41 homeruns for Hazleton that year and batted .373 Knocking in 130 runs in 117 games! He also scored 114 runs and had an unbelievable slugging percentage of .787. He later was very successful at what is today the triple A level but a wrist injury affected his swing and he went on to a Hall of Fame football career playing for the New York Stapletons and mainly with the New York Giants. Strong was a much better baseball player than Jim Thorpe and Bo Jackson and just a little behind Thorpe in foot-

ball. The dearth of knowledgeable baseball historians has prevented Strong from getting the attention he deserves. Jackie Jensen was a great college football player before becoming a Major League MVP in 1958. He had the distinction of playing in the Rose Bowl and the World Series (With the Yankees not the Red Sox. Dick Groat was an All-American basketball player for Duke and had a great rookie NBA season with the Fort Wayne Pistons before concentrating on baseball. Groat had over 2,000 career hits and won a batting title in 1960 with a .325 batting average edging out Beaver Meadows native, Norm Larker of the Dodgers. Frankie Baumholtz was an All-American basketball player and a leading scorer in the Basketball Association of America, the forerunner of the NBA. Baumholt2 hit .290 in a ten year Major league career. With February being Black History month, the person I want to concentrate is totally unique in that he was a successful Major League baseball player for 13 years, playing from 1959 through 1971 while simultaneously being a highly regarded singer of Doo-Wop, Rhythm and Blues and Soul. That man who had unique overlap-

ping careers was Arthur Lee Maye. If someone asked me who Arthur Lee Maye was, I would quickly answer the lead singer of the Crowns. I also would know that Lee Maye was a good hitting part time outfielder for the Milwaukee Braves for a half dozen years and still a good hitting journeyman for the second half of his career. For some reason that Arthur Lee Maye cannot explain he was named Arthur Lee Maye on almost every record but always Lee Maye in baseball. Most fans, like myself did not initially make the connection that singer, Arthur Lee Maye, and baseball player Lee Maye were the same person. Arthur Lee Maye was born on December 11, 1934 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. His family moved to California when he was still a young boy. Maye attended Jefferson High School in California where he starred on the baseball team and was very active in performing Doo-Wop songs with such people as Jessie Belvin and future members of groups like the Coasters, The Platters and the Penguins. Maye quickly became a popular Doo-Wop singer but wanted a baseball career more than a singing one. Mays contended he could sing at 50 but not play baseball at that age. In the mid-fifties, Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns were popular in the L.A. area scoring consecutive hits with Truly and Love Me Always. In 1956, the group had their biggest hit, Gloria, for Specialty records. The single sold over a half million copies. Arthur Lee Maye and The Crowns followed that with another hit, This is the Night for Love on the Dig label. All the while was he was churning out hit records, Arthur Lee Maye was advancing his baseball career in the Milwaukee chain. The baseball career did prevent Mayo from touring and promoting his records. Maye realized he lacked stage presence and diligently studied other accomplished artists. In 1959, Lee Mayo hit .339 with 17 homeruns for Louisville, the Braves top affiliate which earned him a spot on the Braves roster. Maye hit over .300 in his first two years as a part time player for Milwaukee. He was hampered by respiratory illness and injuries in 1961 and 1962. 1964 was a banner year for Maye in both baseball and the recording industry. He hit .304, scored 96 runs, led the National League in doubles with 44, teammate Hank Aaron's uniform number, and had 74 RBIs. A solo album, Halfway Out of Love was a half million seller. An ankle injury in 1965 led to the Braves trading him and resulted in Maye becoming a journeyman outfielder for the remainder of his career. He was traded to the Astros where he batted .288 and frequently sang in Houston night clubs when the team was at home. Maye, who was regarded as a power hitter in his minor league career, was more a line drive hitter in the Majors, One of his line drives in batting practice broke the kneecap of Hall of Fame second baseman Joe Morgan.

Lee Maye later played for the Indians and Senators for two seasons each Maye had personal issues with Ted Williams who was the Senators manager when he played for Washington in 1969 and 1970. Maye admired Williams as a hitter but felt as a manager Teddy Ballgame did not care about anyone. When Maye was released by the White Sox in 1971p he played two years for AAA Hawaii hitting .311 and .285. Lee Maye retired at the age of 37. Arthur Lee Maye desired to have a job in baseball after his retirement but few opportunities were open to black Americans in baseball at that time. Maye was an outspoken critic of the racial prejudice prevalent in baseball in the 1970s. Since he was unable to find work in baseball, Lee Maye worked for Amtrak for many years. Maye still continued his singing career after his retirement from baseball. In 1985, Maye recorded "I'm Happy and in Love" and Moonlight,. He was especially proud of Moonlight. In evaluating Maye's baseball career, one would conclude that he was a solid contact hitter with occasional power (he hit 94 career homeruns), one of the era's quickest outfielders, although this did not translate into stolen bases and a fair defensive outfielder who could play all the outfield positions because of his speed. Like many left-hand batters, he did not hit southpaw pitching well and throughout his career he did not hit that well with men in scoring position. Maye was a part time player in his prime years with the Braves because they had many good hitting outfielders besides Hank Aaron, Wes Covington. Mack Jones and Rico Carty come to mind. Music critic Phil Milstein regarded Mayo as a top flight vocalist as did other music evaluators. While Maye certainly did not rate in the top 20 baseball players of his era, he did rank among the top 20 Doo-Wop and Rhythm and Blues artists of his era. Maye' biggest group hits with the Crowns, were the aforementioned Gloria and Love Me Always,. His greatest solo hit was Have Love Will Travel. Among his closest longtime friends was Richard Berry who composed Louie Louie. Arthur Lee May felt he made the correct choice in putting baseball first and singing second in his prime years though others like myself might question his opting for baseball. Maye felt there was little money in music during his prime years even if one wrote and sang one's songs. Maye was proud and happy that people enjoyed his songs for many years and even was planning a European tour before he died from pancreatic cancer and diabetes on July 17, 2002, exactly 43 years after he played his first game for the Braves. The Doo-Wop songs from the fifties as a whole are regarded as the best recordings of Lee Maye. He often took part in Doo-Wop shows as a participant and later as a spectator. Lee Maye's records and CDs are much more expensive t than his baseball cards,. Almost all of his baseball

cards can be purchased for $10 or less. I have the CD, The Best of Arthur Lee Maye and the Crowns which offers 30 songs, including two versions of Gloria, and Ooh Ruba Lee, which should have been spelled Ruby Lee. I thoroughly enjoyed these and other songs. I particularly liked the slow songs on the CD such as This is the Night for Love, Will You Be Mine, Love Me Always etc. The CD sound quality is not consistently good but nevertheless very entertaining. I basically have all of Lee Mayes Topps cards, and the 1961 and 1964 are my favorites. I think it is interesting to note that on the 1960 61, 63, 65 and 68 Topps cards of Lee Maye there are cartoons which allude to Maye's singing career,

Further, I find it fascinating that the singer in the cartoons is always portrayed as white reflecting the mentality of the 1960s. Choosing The Right Brake Pads by Thomas R. Buff Brake lining, often referred to as brake pads, are heat resistant materials that press up against the brake rotor or disc to create friction. When the brake pedal is applied they activate a system that places the friction material against a disc that slows the wheels of the vehicle. This lining must be capable of enduring high temperatures while remaining soft enough to absorb noise and dissipate heat. A disc brake pad is basically a simple component. The pad is composed of a formed pad of friction material mounted on a steel backing plate. The composition of the friction material is one part science and one part bl art—some pad manufacturers have more than 50 different compounds available!. In a standard brake pad replacement, the motorist is normally unaware of the types of brake lining available due to the fact that for many years there were not many choices available. The brake industry has witnessed rapid developments in brake lining styles and materials thus giving the motorist many choices for their driving style and budget.

Metal rubbing against metal causes vibrations that tend to produce that annoying screech or squeal you may have experienced after a brake job. • Organic brake pads- Organic pads are composed of carbon based compounds with glass or synthetic fibers. These pads were originally produced to replace the asbestos based pads and are well matched for the average motorists driving habits. But organic pads do not resist heat as well as semi metallic pads nor will they last as long. • Ceramic pads – One of the main differences between ceramic enhanced friction materials and semi-metallic brake lining is that ceramic pads contain no steel wool or fiber. Ceramic brake pads first appeared in the early 90’s but did not become popular until original equipment manufactures began using them in new automobiles. ramic pads are designed to virtually eliminate noise and/or break squeal. The ingredients in ceramic pads also produce a light colored dust that is not as visible as the black dust produced by semi-metallic brake pads. The dust does not stick to wheels as easy like semi metallic brake dust. We all know that it is not an easy task to scrub the annoying black brake dust from the wheels. Ceramic pads are available for virtually every model and make of car and truck at local parts houses. They may cost a little more but are highly recommended for drivers who are hard on their brakes. Ceramic pads are designed to extend brake pad life so the extra cost will be worth it. When it comes time for a brake job, be sure to ask the technician for some helpful advice on what types of brake pads will fit your particular driving habits as well as your budget. But always keep in mind that the brake system is the most important safety component so always use quality parts. Also chose a repair facility that employs ASE Certified Technicians. Happy Motoring!

Selecting Seeds For The Garden by Mary Ann Miller, Master Gardener A favorite winter pastime for gardeners is planning for spring and summer, especially selecting the vegetables to grow. I’m usually getting my seed order ready in February. Growing from seeds, whether they can be planted directly outdoors or must be nurtured inside until the weather warms, saves money and offers a much greater variety of cultivars from which to choose. But where do you find the best seed and what should you look for in selecting particular varieties? Seeds can be purchased from a number of sources: big box stores, grocery stores, garden centers, or seed companies through catalogues or the internet. Among the many general cata-

logues available are Burpee, The Cook’s Garden, Harris Seeds, High Mowing Organic Seeds, Johnny’s Selected Seeds, Jung Seeds, Seed Savers Exchange, and Territorial Seed Company. In addition, there are specialty seed providers, such as Dixondale Farms (onions and leeks), Totally Tomatoes, and Vermont Bean Seed, It is important to choose seeds produced by reliable growers. Many seed companies have been in business for many years and produce high quality seeds. Their seeds can sometimes be found in stores, but the greatest variety will be found in catalogues or online. Avoid purchasing seeds from an unknown source or seeds which are particularly inexpensive. I have learned the hard way that low price may also mean poor germination or quality. On the other hand, there is no need to look for the most expensive source. Good quality seeds can be found at a reasonable price. Note how seeds are displayed before buying from a store. If they are in direct sunlight or an area of fluctuating temperature, the viability of the seeds may be compromised. Do a little research before buying seeds by checking information about the source on the internet or in garden magazines or catalogues. You can also call Luzerne County Extension for information, or talk with other gardeners to learn where they have purchased good seeds. For future reference, keep a record of the seeds which you use, noting how well they germinated and produced. I normally purchase seeds from companies which share our plant hardiness zone (6a) and are close geographically because they are more likely to offer varieties which will produce well in our area. When determining what type of seed to purchase, be aware that there are some general classifications to consider. Heirloom seeds are from open-pollinated plants that have been grown for decades (generally before World War II) without cross-breeding. Heirlooms may be more prone to disease and produce less uniform and attractive fruit than hybrids, but are often more flavorful. Hybrid vegetables on the other hand have been crossbred to have specific characteristics, such as resistance to pests or disease, greater yield, or a particular size, shape, consistency, or

color. Organic seeds are produced by USDA certified organic farmers. The parent plants have not been treated with synthetic fertilizers or pesticides. They may therefore be better adapted for organic gardening. Before purchasing seeds you should consider how much space is available for planting and which vegetables are your family’s favorites. Be aware of cool vs. warm season crops and the appropriate planting dates and length of growing season in your area as you decide what to plant. Once you have generally planned the garden space, you can begin choosing the particular varieties of vegetables which you wish to grow. Seed catalogues and packets provide a lot of information about particular varieties, such as whether they are heirlooms or hybrids, planting dates, soil/fertilizer requirements, recommended depth and spacing of seed, days to maturity, growing habit of the plant (e.g. vining or bush, determinate or indeterminate), and characteristics of the mature fruit (e.g. size, color, taste, suitability for canning or freezing). Careful consideration of this information enables gardeners to choose varieties suitable to their planting space and their flavor and use preferences. These descriptions also tell you if a variety is resistant to particular diseases. Many tomatoes have been developed to withstand verticillium and fusariam wilt, for example. Some newer varieties are even resistant to late blight. Growing vegetables from seed is fun and economical, but a random packet of seeds from a big box store may not provide what you want or expect. Careful reading of seed catalogues provides a wealth of information about the many varieties available and helps you to choose what is most suitable for your garden. Foaming Your Home Can Help You Save (NAPSA)-The use of energy-efficient and environmentally responsible building materials is an important consideration for homeowners, developers, architects and contractors. Spray polyurethane foam (SPF) is a wise choice for insulating homes and structures as it can help lower energy use and bills. Lower energy use means that less greenhouse gases, like carbon dioxide, are being produced in the generation of electricity or other fuels that power our buildings. In California, which ranks among the most expensive states in terms of energy prices, SPF insulation can help homeowners save about $900 annually on their heating and cooling costs. Additionally, these energy savings mean homes insulated with SPF can reduce the amount of carbon dioxide being released into the state's air by 800,000 metric tons,

the equivalent of removing 2,700 cars from the roads there each year. And these savings aren't limited to California. In Minneapolis, with its cold and long winters, a home with SPF insulation can save the equivalent of 2,400 barrels of oil over a 60-year period. A home in Houston, with its hot and long summers, can save the equivalent of 500 barrels of oil during that same period. And all these savings translate to less greenhouse gases being pumped into the environment. SPF produces these energy-efficiency benefits through its high R-value, which is the measure of the insulation's ability to resist heat flow. The higher the R-value, the greater the insulating power. SPF can also act as an air barrier and sealant for cracks and gaps. This is important, as air leaks in a home can

The Healthy Mouth/Happy Heart Connection Provided by Della Croce Dental Care For obvious reasons – nice teeth, clean breath – a healthy mouth is important. But do you realize that a healthy mouth can also mean a healthier body? In addition preventing tooth loss when you’re older as well as gum disease and overall tooth decay, a clean and healthy mouth helps the body fight other diseases such as stroke, heart disease, diabetes and even pre-term labor. Saliva is a prime indicator in determining health problems – even when determining diseases such as AIDS or diabetes. Furthermore, with the advancement of technology, saliva may replace blood tests for things like Parkinson’s disease, cirrhosis and other infectious diseases. In addition to being able to help determine certain diseases, saliva is also one of our main defenses against viruses and bacteria that can cause anything from the common cold to HIV. But saliva needs help. If you aren’t brushing and flossing regularly, plaque builds up along your gumline. This plaque causes bacteria to build up between your teeth and gums and leads to gingivitis which, when left untreated, creates an even more serious problem: periodontitis. This chronic bacterial infection can make its way into the bloodstream and effect the rest of the body. When the plaque is left to build up, as it is without proper oral hygiene and regular visits to your dentist, more serious consequences will arise, including: • Diabetes that is poorly controlled: If you have already been diagnosed with diabetes, you are already at high risk for gum disease, however, the vicious cycle continues as chronic gum disease makes diabetes more difficult to control. • Heart disease: It’s been proven that gingivitis plays a role in heart disease by causing inflammation through our bodies – even in the arteries. Further studies have shown that those who have infections of the gums are at a higher risk for heart attack and strokes. • Premature Labor: Not only does gum disease cause premature labor and delivery, it also also causes low birth weight. If healthy teeth and gums aren’t reason

It’s Valentine’s Day So Kiss All Of Your Dental Issues Away! by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. It’s hard to believe that the Christmas decorations which had adorned our homes both inside and out are barely put neatly away and now we are onto the next holiday to the delight of both retailers and lovers alike. Let’s face it; there is no single act more powerful which expresses our faithful reverence to our significant other than a kiss. Think of Birthday’s, New Year’s Eve, Anniversaries, and so the list goes on. These are all “kiss-inspiring” events in our lives which seal the bond of love and affection which we feel for our significant other. Though we all enjoy the all-encompassing kiss, there are a few precautions of which you may be unaware. To begin, that special kiss has the potential to deliver hundreds of varieties of disease-causing bacteria which may lead to diseases such as gum disease, viral-induced cold sores, or even mononucleosis, the dreaded kissing disease itself. I know. I know. By now you are probably thinking that this Dentist is like “The Grinch that stole Valentine’s Day”, Right? The answer to that is a resounding, “No!” I am a firm believer in expressing affection to one’s significant other. In fact, kissing actually has therapeutic values as well. Healthier mouth saliva contains substances that fight bacteria, viruses and fungi. Deep kissing increases the flow of saliva, which helps to keep the mouth, teeth and gums healthy. So, my take home message regarding kissing is simple. Kiss literally to your heart’s content being fully aware of both you and your sweetheart’s oral health.

There are no greater deterrents to that special kiss than broken, discolored teeth and/or bad breath. Both effectively act as “Stop Signs to Passion”. Bad oral health may occur for a multitude of reasons. Poor homecare such as infrequent brushing and flossing perhaps due to being non-informed is a huge reason. This leads to food and plaque buildup which results in halitosis. Pungent foods such as garlic, uncooked onions, cheese and soda will actually lead to the ever-repelling bad breath as well. These odors linger if you do not promptly brush, floss, and rinse them away. Smoking and non-smoking tobacco habits also contribute greatly to bad breath. Particulate matter from both gathers and adheres to both hard and soft tissues which, unless thoroughly removed, will result in offensive breath. Patients with existing periodontal issues, dry mouth, or even long standing sinus conditions will also experience bad breath. Such issues require constant vigilance and treatment by both your medical and dental professionals to reduce and eradicate these underlying conditions and bad breath as a result. Valentine’s Day presents a myriad of holidayrelated treats in increased frequency when compared to the rest of the year. Sugary splurges such as champagne, holiday-inspired cocktails, candy, and delectable desserts are certainly all welcoming vices when in moderation. Provided you disperse these treats between a healthy, well-balanced diet and remember to keep up with your home cleaning regimen, there is no

reason to avoid such well-deserved indulgences. In the beginning of this article, I had pointed out the fact that Christmas is barely behind us and yet another gift-giving holiday is fastapproaching. Remembering the hassle of afterChristmas returns myself, I’m sure you will as well. If I could make a suggestion to eliminate that whole entire process, how does a delayed New Year’s Resolution coupled with a gift for both you and your significant other sound? By giving the gift of proper Oral Health to both you and your loved one, you need not concern yourself with sizes, colors, or any of the other hassles associated with gift-giving while you will both benefit from this gift the whole year through. My office offers gift certificates, bleaching kit packages, as well as dental devices which will make your home oral health care tasks much easier and more manageable. Gifts such as these will assure the both of you a healthier, more kissable smile that will endure for many Valentine’s Days to come. I invite you to contact my office at 570443-9892 so we may assist you in customizing a dental care package for yourself as well as your sweetheart, or to schedule a Pre-Valentine’s Day appointment to assure your loveable, kissable smile. Remember, enjoy Valentine’s Day as well as the splurges that go along with it as long as you do so in moderation while keeping your oral care in mind. Receding Gums: A Major Issue Affecting Oral Health (Family Features) Affecting nearly half of the U.S. population, gum recession is an oral health issue in which the gums have worn away, exposing teeth to damaging, disease-causing bacteria. While traditional treatments exist, they come with a painful surgery with a long recovery time. A new treatment option, however, offers better, nearly pain-free results for patients. Gum Recession And Its Traditional Treatments For many, the issue of receding gums is caused by gum disease or from simply over-brushing the teeth and gums. While aging often comes into play, children can also be affected. In fact, 10 percent of children with braces suffer from gum recession. While there is a surgical method to correct the issue, also known as gum grafting, the process can be very painful, requiring multiple surgical procedures and an extended recovery time. To perform this method, tissue from the roof of the mouth is cut, removed and surgically grafted onto the receding gum area. But thanks to a new technique, patients now have a less painful option for correcting this issue. A New And Improved Method This breakthrough method for treating gum recession is called the Pinhole Surgical Technique (PST). Invented and patented by John Chao, D.D.S., the procedure is incision-free and suture-free. To correct the problem, Chao uses a fine needle to create a small pinhole above the receded gums. With special instruments the gums are loosened from the underlying connective tissue and moved into the proper position. Finally, collagen strips are placed through the pinhole under the gums to keep them in place. The Pinhole Surgical Technique is "quick," "easy," and "instantly pleasing." It is quick because it takes only 15 to 20 minutes to correct gum recession for two or three teeth. It is "easy" on the patient because no incisions or stitching is required. Hence, there are hardly any symptoms of discomfort afterwards. It is "instantly pleasing" because the gum line looks practically normal immediately after the procedure is completed. Many patients are astounded by the "instant" change in appearance. Factors For Patients While costs of both procedures are comparable, there are several factors for patients to consider. Traditional gum grafting from another place in the mouth requires several incisions and generally can only correct one to two teeth per surgical visit, which can take up to two hours to

complete. PST, on the other hand, involves no incisions, can correct 10-14 teeth per visit and only takes about 20 minutes to treat three teeth. Also, the Pinhole is practically healed and disappears by the next day, while gum grafting can take up to three weeks to heal. Coming To A Town Near You Due to the popularity of the new technique,

Dr. Chao is training the PST procedure to dentists around the world. This allows patients from the U.S. and all over the world to take part in this innovative new procedure. For information about dentists in your area who perform the procedure, visit www.pinholesurgicaltechnique. com. You may also call 626-308-9104 for more information.

Liquid protein nutrition, using protein power blended into nutritional shakes and smoothies, has been recognized as having immense value in providing a sound nutritional foundation for individuals and offers several advantages over solid food for the uptake of vitamins and minerals. Liquid nutrition supplies nutrients in a form that is more easily and efficiently taken up than obtaining nutrients from solid foods, which require specific digestive enzymes and stomach acid for absorption. Liquid protein nutrition can be enhanced by the addition of whole food ingredients such as fruits, berries and vegetables and flavored to the desired flavor of the user. And liquid protein nutrition can even be “supercharged” by the addition of specific vitamins and minerals. Liquid protein nutrition “smoothies” have long been recognized as being helpful for weight loss. A protein-based smoothie for breakfast can provide a start for the day which will encourage fat-burning and ultimate weight loss. Athletes and body

builders looking for fast muscle recovery, individuals with wound-healing challenges, hospice patient, pregnant mothers, diabetics, patients undergoing cancer treatment, bariatric surgery patients and many other indications can be benefited by the usage of liquid protein nutrition. Protein is an important macronutrient that is essential to preserving and nurturing good health. While the importance of protein is undisputed, most individuals overlook plants as a viable source to meet their protein requirements. Animal-sourced proteins are ranked higher on the food chain than plants. But they can contain appreciable amounts of cholesterol and saturated fats and can be a source of antibiotics, hormones and other undesirable elements that are inherent in our food supply. Hazle Drugs own nutritionist designed “Perfect Protein Powder” is an enhanced plant protein that can provide composition comparable to animal-derived proteins. Perfect Protein Powder provides 21 grams of protein per serving, with only 1 gram of sugar. It is formulated with agave inulin to provide prebiotic support along with a synergistic enzyme blend for easy digestion. This proprietary blend of enhanced pea protein is vegetarian and vegan. Finally, Perfect Protein Powder contains no soy, dairy, wheat, gluten, preservatives, artificial colors, sweeteners or flavors. It is hypoallergenic and non-GMO. The Gift Of Sight by Dr. Alexandra Wasmanski, OD Refractive eye surgery is becoming more and more common place throughout the world. Gone are the days of wearing glasses and/or contacts from grade school to retirement. With all the options available today, the most popular is still LASIK. LASIK stands for laser-assisted in situ keratomileusis. This procedure improves vision by changing the shape of the cornea to correct the three main types of refractive problems. For nearsighted people, it will flatten the cornea. For farsighted patients, it will steepen the cornea. And for those with astigmatism, the laser can smooth the cornea’s irregular shape to one that is more spherical. The best candidates for LASIK surgery are those who are with good general and ocular health. Patients should also be at least eighteen years of age. It is important to wait until your eyeglass prescription has stabilized before having the surgery done. That way, an enhancement shouldn’t be necessary a few years down the road. LASIK has certain advantages over other

refractive surgery procedures. First, there is relatively no pain involved. During the surgery, anesthetic drops are used to numb the eye. Afterwards, some patients may feel a mild irritation for a few hours, which quickly resolves. Another benefit is the rapid improvement in vision. Some visual improvement takes place immediately following the completion of the surgery. For most people, satisfactory acuity is achieved by the next day. This allows patients to resume their daily activities 24 hours after surgery. A final perk to LASIK surgery is the quickness of the procedure. It is usually preformed in less than six minutes. There are very little risks associated with LASIK eye surgery. Most commonly, patients experience a temporary dry eye condition. This results when the corneal flap is made. During the first six months following surgery, it is important to use artificial tears to keep the eye moist. This condition is usually temporary, resolving as the corneal nerves regenerate. Night glare may also initially

worsen following LASIK, but again should be selflimiting. Finally, the chance of infection is minimal for this procedure. Patients will be given antibiotic eye drops to use for a short time period following the operation to assure a healthy outcome. When considering refractive eye surgery, it is important to be aware of all your options. The first step is to schedule a comprehensive ocular exam with a well informed eye doctor. The doctor will be able to examine your eyes, assess your ocular health, and determine whether or not you are a good candidate for surgery. Vision is a gift that should last your lifetime.

Piriformis Syndrome – How To Get Rid Of A Pain In The Butt by Ting Oh, PT, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers Piriformis Syndrome is a condition that causes a pain in the butt and occurs when the piriformis muscle is irritated and spasms. It is a difficult condition to diagnose and treat as it can mimic many other conditions such as sciatica, disc disease, arthritis and hip pain leaving people with a pain in the butt that won’t go away. The piriformis is a deep muscle that runs sideways from the tailbone to the hip. It helps stabilize and rotate the hip and is active with walking, running, squatting and bending. We find it is a muscle that is prone to spasm. In 96% of people, the sciatic nerve runs under or through the muscle so when it is tight or spasms, it can compress the nerve causing symptoms into the leg similar to sciatica. Common causes of piriformis syndrome includes overuse due to too much walking,

running, doing steps or lifting, trauma from falling onto the buttocks or from sitting too long especially on hard surfaces or a wallet in the back pocket. We also find it is very common in people with low back pain as many nerves from the back runs to and through this area. People with this condition will feel a deep ache in the butt and hip which may get sharp with walking, twisting and sitting. Bending to tie your shoes may also be painful. As the sciatic nerve may be involved, people may also feel pain, burning, tingling and numbness into the hip and leg. There are a number of clinical tests that can help identify piriformis syndrome. This includes feeling a tender lump deep in the buttocks, having one leg rolled outwards when you are lying down and pain when the muscle is placed on stretch. Once identified, you have

a better chance of getting the problem fixed. Treatment for piriformis syndrome should be focused on decreasing irritation on the muscle and helping the tightness/spasm release. This can be done through hands-on soft tissue releases including trigger point and myofascial releases. Once released, you are able stretch the muscle and work on strengthening to return it back to its normal state. We also find many people have soft tissue and strength imbalances that need to be addressed which may have been the cause of the problem in the first place. At FYZICAL Therapy and Balance Centers, our expertise is using hands on techniques to help reduce pain, tightness/spasms so people can exercise in order to allow their injuries to heal and get back to living life to the fullest. We understand many people have a pain in their butt and may be able to help them get rid of it. For more information or to schedule an appointment, call 570-501-1808. A Good Story by John Degenhart, DC I opened up my mail the other day and there was a nice thank you card in it. But my staff opened it first, and they couldn't understand what it meant. All it said was, "Thanks, it was the best investment in my life. Here is 50¢ to repay you for my 20th anniversary." let me tell you what happened. You're going to like this one. Over 20 years ago in my practice I has this 30 year old female patient. Her back pain went away and her headaches stopped. Then one day she asked me, “You see a lot of people here, I’m shy, could you help me find a boyfriend?” I told her I would keep an eye open for a single guy her age and I’ll let her know. Gradually as I saw patients, one nice guy came to mind. He was quiet, had a good job, and I decided to ask him. “What would you say if I have you call a girl in my practice and ask her for a date?” he quietly said, “Can you have her call me?” I said sure.

So the next time the female patient came to my office I was happy to give her the good news. I jokingly gave her a quarter and said, “Give him a call, I think you two would get along well.” I think the cost of the pay phone call at that point was 25¢. They began to date, they got along well, and they got married! Many years passed, and I never saw them again. That’s when I got their nice card in the mail. It was their 20th anniversary, so she wanted to pay me back the initial quarter I jokingly gave her to call him. She gave me two quarters for 20 years. I have kept a box of cards like that. When this world gets me down and I find it hard to uplift others all the time. I will pray for God to renew my mind, but then I’ll go through a few thank you cards. Like this one, each one tells a story. For the New Year, I know some people feel like they made bad decisions and that their life

Take Off Your Mask, To Find Peace At Last

Growing Thicker Eyelashes

by Rebecca Bicking, Mystic Power Yoga Teacher In Training

by Stephen Schleicher, MD Want fuller eyelashes? Six years ago the prescription eyelash-enhancer Latisse was approved by the FDA. Applied like eyeliner, Latisse enters eyelash hair follicles to stimulate hair growth. Not cheap; a 3 ml vial will set you back over $100. So, does it really work and is it safe? First, consider the context. The appearance of the eyes is a key determinant to the perception of beauty across cultures and eyelashes certainly contribute to one’s overall facial look. I read with interest a recent study that included over 500 adults (aged 18 and above) who used Latisse for a minimum of 12 months. Patient satisfaction was quite high with over 90% either “extremely satisfied” or “satisfied” with their treatment. The majority affirmed that Latisse increased the length and fullness of their eyelashes. Daily treatment for at least 4 months is initially recommended; of interest, approximately 75% of individuals in the study had switched to a “maintenance regimen” of applying the product three times per week which equates to a major cost saving. Adverse reactions such as itching and dermatitis were mild, occurred early in treatment, and resolved over time. Latisse is the only eyelash enhancer approved by the FDA. It is made by the same company that produces Botox (Allergan). Good to know that, similar to Botox, Latisse is both safe and effective.

"Don't be fooled by me. Don't be fooled by the face I wear. For I wear a mask, a thousand masks, masks that I am afraid to take off, and none of them is me." ~ Charles C. Finn Like many people today, I grew up in a broken home. I was raised by a single mother, who for twenty years up until 2011, was a dependant alcoholic and victim of depression. I learned at a very young age how to overcome many emotional obstacles on my own. I became so good at hiding my tears and pain behind smiles and laughter, that even some of my closest friends, to this day, do not know the kind of childhood and mid twenty years I have fought through, to become the person I am today. I wore various masks throughout those years. I wore them for so long, that I forgot who I really was beneath them. Throughout our lives we all at some point or another hide behind our masks and use them to help define ourselves for others. We conceal our identity behind smiling social-networking profiles or happy church faces. They aren't lies really, they just aren't the truth. We know that most of the people we encounter day to day could not handle the truth, or perhaps, we couldn't handle giving it to them. In 2008, during a time I needed it most, one of my best friends introduced me to yoga at a studio where she taught briefly, before moving away. I immediately became hooked. As I looked into local yoga studios in my area, another friend of mine and I decided to try out Mystic Power Yoga and see what a heated power vinyasa class was like. Since then, yoga has become an integral part of my life. I have gained more mindful and healthier eating habits and have felt a positive shift in my energy level. with continued meditation have helped me to finally come to peace with who I am. I have learned to strip away the layers and let go of the masks I have hid behind for so long. Yoga has inspired me to face life more authentically and be okay with vulnerability, because it is through being weak, where one learns their true strengths. I have realized how important it is to let go of my past so I could fully enjoy the present moments. I am eternally grateful for the decision I made to step onto my mat at Mystic Power Yoga and allow myself to become part of such an enriching, supportive, powerful, and real community, full of so many inspiring people. I have gained inner confidence and peace in my life that may not have been possible for me, had I not been challenged to do so. I could never thank all the people in my life enough for the many ways in which they all helped push me to grow, physically and mentally. Can You Think Yourself Young? by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers Well technically, no. However, there is a growing body of evidence that shows how you perceive aging, and your perception of how old you feel, can affect your general overall health and wellbeing and how old you seem to yourself and others. Many people may scoff at the idea that you can change your physiology by thinking differently about yourself, but a famous unconventional experiment conducted by Harvard researcher, Ellen Langer, in 1981 has gained prominence over the last several years. In this experiment, Langer invited two groups of men in their 70s on a “reminiscing retreat,” without telling them that they were part of a study. All of these men had physical difficulties or memory issues that caused them to rely on others for help. One group of men spent the week reminiscing about life in 1959 while surrounded by present-day familiarities. The other group of men was actually “dropped” into the year 1959, so to speak. This group was immersed in mementos from that era, from newspaper articles to radios and black-and-white televisions that played shows from the time, and told to pretend they were back in 1959. This latter group of men engaged in debates about world events of 1959 as if they were occurring in the present day. Of additional interest is that the men were not given any assistance at the retreat at any time. There were no handrails or ramps to help with walking, and they were not given any assistance bringing their luggage to their rooms. They needed to find a way to transport their belongings and get around the retreat grounds on their own. By the end of the retreat period, both groups of men showed significant, positive changes in every aspect, but the second group that was immersed in 1959 showed the greatest improvement, to the extent that this group of once-frail men were playing touch football at the end of the retreat. Further, these positive cognitive and physiological changes were confirmed by laboratory tests that showed improvement in the men’s memory and other cognitive abilities, flexibility, gait, arthritis, speed of movement, and dexterity. What was more surprising was that the men also had lower blood pressure, better hearing, and better eyesight. It appeared as though by thinking they were younger, these men had physically become “younger.” As doctors and scientist continue to study the connections between the mind and body,

it is becoming more evident that aging is not a fixed process. More evidence is mounting that attitudes affect physical, cognitive, and psychological wellbeing-that humans can “think themselves younger.” By changing attitudes about the aging process and self-perceptions about their own physical and cognitive wellbeing, average people have a greater power than they may realize over how well they age.

The “Fast Five” by Lauren Nesbitt, RD, LDN, Dietitian Weatherwood Skilled Nursing Facility Happy New Year! The New Year is not only the beginning of a new calendar but tends to be the time when plans and resolutions are embarked upon. Typical focus of New Year’s resolutions include becoming more organized, saving more money or spending more time with family and friends. Resolving to eat healthier and exercise more often top the resolution list for men and women of many age groups. After the holidays end and the cookies are gone, everyone realizes that it is time to not only return to their normal routine, but make their routine a healthier one. Many times, we say “I need to go on a diet.” or “Once I diet, I’ll lose weight.” However, this word “diet” often has a negative connotation and presents the idea of a temporary solution to lose weight or eat healthier. However, the word diet should actually refer to food you consume on a daily basis, not just the trendiest plan. Change can be a difficult thing to both begin and maintain, but if change begins with small manageable steps, the likelihood of success is considerably enhanced. Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States and making healthy food choices and increasing activity level are two ways to help reduce your risk. There are many ways to make small changes to your daily meal and snacks routine. Taking the first step toward these small changes is beneficial to increasing your energy level and health status both now and for years to come. Here are my five quick tips to make healthier food choices to your everyday routine: 1. No more food pyramid? The current guideline from the United States Department of Ag-

riculture (USDA) is no longer the “Food Pyramid” but is now the “MyPlate” model “MyPlate” which makes eating healthier simpler. Here is what it suggests; fill half your plate with fruits and vegetables, one quarter with grains and one quarter with protein. • Wondering how to put this “MyPlate” into affect for you? Here is a hint: - Add berries or a banana to your morning cereal - When having a sandwich, opt for a side salad or cup of fruit. Make it an even better choice with half a sandwich and salad! 2. You’re already sweet enough! Reduce your sugar filled beverage consumption: Exchanging your daily soda or iced tea to a bottle of water could save you approximately 43,000 calories over the course of a year! This simple swap can save you from gaining up to 10 pounds. 3. Swap your snacks: Do you reach for an afternoon candy bar from the vending machine? Consider a sliced apple with 2 of tablespoons peanut butter to satisfy your sweet tooth. Additionally, the protein in the peanut butter will help keep you feeling full. 4. Give beans a try: Add beans to soups, stews or chili. Beans such as kidney beans, black beans,

and garbanzo beans are all high in fiber. Increasing fiber consumption can be beneficial for heart disease prevention and fiber keeps you feeling fuller longer. 5. Portion Control: If night time snacking while watching television is your downfall, never sit down with the entire bag of snacks. Read the Nutrition Facts label to determine one serving size and measure out that amount of your favorite snack into a bowl. You will be surprised how fast calories add up when you are not paying attention and are focused on your favorite television program! Eating well goes hand in hand with increasing your activity level. Finding time for exercising can be difficult but small changes include changing your activity habits. You could try taking the stairs instead of the elevator or park at a further away parking spot when shopping. I am a firm believer that making small adjustments to meals and snacks can produce positive results to your health over time. Change towards a healthier lifestyle can be a difficult hurdle to overcome, but by taking it one step at a time, we can begin the journey to become happier and healthier.

Children And Urologic Conditions— Learn The Signs And Know Where To Turn Information provided by the Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton You’re a proud new parent, ready to guide your child’s journey from infant to toddler to youngster. You also want to be sure you’re doing all you can to enhance your child’s health. One rarely discussed area of children’s care is good urologic health, yet it’s an important part of boys’ and girls’ overall well-being and development. “While most parents don’t think about urologic issues in children, there are some things to keep in mind, especially if you’re the parent of boys,” says Lehigh Valley Health Network pediatric urologist Michele Clement, MD, with Children’s Hospital at Lehigh Valley Hospital in Allentown. She’s one of just 325 board-certified pediatric urologists nationwide. “For starters, make sure your child drinks water with meals and snacks,” Clement says. “Also, encourage your child to urinate every two to three hours during the day.” Potential children’s urologic conditions include: • Urinary tract infections (UTI) – Usually caused by bacteria that live in the lower intes-

tine, UTIs occur most often in girls but can affect boys. Symptoms may include burning with urination, frequent urination, leakage, upper abdomen or back pain, vomiting or fever. “A UTI can be diagnosed and treated by your child’s primary care provider,” Clement says. “But UTIs with fever can be a sign of an underlying urologic condition that requires further investigation.” Girls who have UTIs with fever – or boys who have UTIs without fever – should see a pediatric urologist. • Undescended testicles – This occurs when a boy’s testicles fail to descend into his scrotum. The testicles should be down at birth, but if one or both are not in the scrotum at 6 months, a pediatric urologist may help. Also, your child’s primary care provider should do yearly testes checks at well visits. • Genital abnormalities – These can include hypospadias (a urinary opening not all the way at the tip of the penis) or abnormal bends or twists to the penis. These conditions most often require surgery at ages 6 to 9 months. • Testicular torsion – “When redness, swelling and pain occur suddenly on one side of the scrotum, boys should go to the emergency room immediately,” Clement says. It may be a sign of restricted blood flow.

Cancer Treatment Center At Hazleton – Offers Supportive Resources With The American Cancer Society The Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton provides the Greater Hazleton area and all of Luzerne County with the highest quality radiation therapy treatment and is now expanding! The center recently partnered with the American Cancer Society (ACS) with the opening of the ACS Cancer Resource Center. The Resource Center is located inside the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, 1701 East Broad Street. It is operated by certified ACS staff and trained volunteers available to answer questions and provide guidance to patients and their loved ones on how to access supportive resources and programs offered by the ACS. The launch of the new Resource Center will greatly benefit the residents of Hazleton and surrounding Counties who otherwise might have traveled outside the area for the very same services offered by the ACS Resource Center and the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton. The Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton offers several advanced treatment options, including external-beam radiation therapy, 3-D conformal therapy and intensity modulated

radiation therapy (IMRT), a type of three-dimensional radiation therapy in which beams of varying intensity are aimed at a tumor from different angles. IMRT allows doctors to customize the radiation beams delivered to individual patients, resulting in much better targeting than with conventional radiation. This type of therapy also minimizes radiation exposure to healthy tissue surrounding a tumor. Patients receive a certain number of daily radiation treatments over a period of several weeks. Treatments are outpatient procedures that usually take about 15 minutes each. As part of our advanced radiation therapy offerings the center utilizes image guided radiation therapy (IGRT). This treatment option uses ExacTrac®, an advanced technology that enables tumors to be treated with greater accuracy in a painless, noninvasive outpatient procedure. The ExacTrac® system monitors/adapts to minor patient movements during treatment, ensuring accuracy and precision throughout treatment procedures and minimizes radiation exposure to surrounding healthy tissue.

The Benefits of ExacTrac IGRT: • Painless and noninvasive • Outpatient procedure • Highly accurate beam targeting and improved precision • Compensates for minor patient movements, ensuring accuracy and protection of nearby healthy tissue •S hort treatment delivery Radiation treatments can be beneficial for patients diagnosed with all types of cancer. The most common cancer diagnosis worldwide, lung cancer is the leading cause of cancer deaths in the United States, while breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer deaths in American women. While surgery is a standard treatment for early stage lung and breast cancers, some patients with medically inoperable tumors or those in poor health may necessitate an alternative. For example, lung cancer surgery involves removing all or part of the patient’s affected lung. However, patients in poor general health or suffering from chronic pulmonary disease like emphysema may not be able to undergo surgery. For patients who aren’t surgical candidates, radiation therapy is typically recommended. For men diagnosed with prostate cancer, we offer, in addition to our external radiation therapy services, a procedure called brachytherapy. In this form of treatment, small radioactive seeds are implanted within the prostate gland. Guided by an ultrasound device, our physicians insert the seeds with a needle into the prostate. Patients who undergo brachytherapy are usually allowed to return home on the same day. External Beam Radiation Therapy(EBRT), as well as, Brachytherapy have been shown to provide excellent long-term success rates with minimal side effects while offering an alternative to surgical removal of the prostate gland. The Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton’s caring and experienced staff, which includes board-certified radiation oncologist, Dr. Steve Karp, is committed to delivering an exceptional patient experience in a comfortable setting, close to home. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with cancer, please set up your consultation or second opinion appointment by contacting Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton at (570) 459-3460 or visit CancerTreatmentCenterHazleton.com. The Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton offers free, off-street parking, as well as resources and support for patients and their families.

The Laurels Senior Living Community February 2015 Valentine’s Day Party Red, white and pink will be the colors on the menu at our annual Valentine’s Day party held on Saturday, Feb. 14th at 2pm with entertainment by Tonya & Terri Erdman. We can’t wait to see who will be our 2015 King and Queen! Valentine’s Day Fundraiser Valentine's Day has always been a time to recognize the most important people in our lives, and what better way to show you care than to give a gift that also helps one of our local charitable organizations! To help celebrate the time-less tradition of love and sweets, family members and staff can send a special balloon bouquet complete with delicious gourmet candy to their loved ones on Valentine’s Day. Each balloon bouquet is personally created and hand delivered. All proceeds from the surprise bouquets will benefit the American Cancer Society of Greater Hazleton. To place an order, please call the office at 570-455-7757. Thank you to all who plan to participate in this wonderful fundraiser. We appreciate your generosity and I’m sure the residents will appreciate the thoughtful gift! Valentine Exchange Residents will exchange traditional Valentine’s with each other to commemorate the special “Sweetheart” day. Residents will decorate their own Valentine boxes and make (or purchase) cards for the exchange. It will be nice to read all the special quotes from each other. It is humbling to realize the amazing friends you meet and come to love at the Laurels…friendships for a lifetime. And Valentine’s Day is a great time to let someone know how much you care! Popular practices on Mardi Gras include wearing masks and costumes, social gatherings, dancing, sports competitions, parades, etc. Our annual Mardi

Gras party will be held on Feb. 17th at 2pm with entertainment by the Tune Bandits, who will help transform the Laurels into traditional New Orleans flair. We will be creating our own masks and treats for the festivities!
