Panorama Community Magazine Participates In The 22nd Annual Community Reading Day Activities At The Hazleton Child Development Center

Community Reading Day is an event which celebrates and encourages reading by younger children. This literacy event is designed to help students develop the habit of reading. Reading improves memory and concentration and helps children become lifelong learners. November 20th was the 22nd Annual Community Ready Day. We had the pleasure of reading to the Pre-K children at The Hazleton Child Development Center. The

children were so adorable and attentive while we read the book titled “When I Grow Up”. While reading, we were stopping periodically to discuss the story, and the students were very engaged in answering our questions. After we were finished reading, we were impressed with their creativity when asked what they wanted to be when they grow up. Their imagination was incredible! We would like to say a special “Thank You” to Miss Kelly, Miss Kayla and Grandmother Geraldine for their gracious hospital-

How To Give The Most Requested Gift This Holiday Season (NAPS)—According to InComm’s 2018 Holiday Index, over 211 million U.S. consumers will be shopping for holiday gifts this year, and gift cards are this season’s most requested gift. If you’ll be among those giving a gift card, these three wrapping ideas can make them even more special to your recipient. 1. A DIY gift card holder. Pull the crafting sup-

plies out, get your kids involved and assemble a personalized gift card holder that reflects your recipient’s hobby or interest. 2. Make it personal with a handmade greeting card. A handwritten note is truly a lost art so use your words to tell your recipients why you selected this particular gift card for them and let them know what they mean to you during this

STS Is Here To Get You There! by Joan M. Breslin, A.S.B. – Marketing & Service Support Coordinator In October of 2018 the Schuylkill Transportation System incorporated five new Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) vehicles into their fleet which will be utilized on the system’s ten fixed routes. There are many advantages of fueling vehicles with Compressed Natural Gas including reduced maintenance costs, expanding the vehicle’s life cycle, and promoting a greener environment by reducing less harmful emissions into the air. And since most natural gas consumed in the United States is produced in North America; resources should be readily available for many future generations. STS has been offering fixed route bus service for over thirty five years for any individual who needs a ride. Registered senior citizens sixty-five years of age or older ride FREE. All other individuals can ride the STS fixed route bus system by paying a fare of one dollar and fifty cents ($1.50) plus 25 cents for a transfer if applicable. The Schuylkill Transportation System offers shared ride van service under several funded

programs that are available to many Schuylkill County residents. The most commonly known program is the Shared Ride Van Program for Senior Citizens, which is sponsored by the PennDOT Lottery Program and subsidized by the Schuylkill County Office of Senior Services. All senior citizens who are 65 (sixty-five) years of age or older regardless of income are eligible to use this service. For a small co-pay of one dollar ($1.00) per one-way trip, seniors can travel to the following destinations: any type of medical appointment, social service agency, local grocery shopping, senior resource center or adult day care center. Transportation to other destinations is dependent on variables such as trip purpose and distance traveled. The ADA Complementary Para Transit service is provided to individuals who, because of their disability, cannot use the fixed route bus system, if and when available. Complementary para transit works for trips that originate and end within ¾ mile of a fixed route bus and operates during the same days and hours as the fixed route bus system. The fare for this trans-

portation service is $3.00 each way. Another shared ride van program includes the Rural Transportation for Persons with Disabilities program. This program, which is also sponsored by PennDOT, provides shared ride van service to any disabled resident of Schuylkill County between the ages of eighteen and sixty four regardless of income if they need transportation in areas that are not serviced by the fixed route and if they are not eligible for any other funding source. This program is operated county wide, outside the ADA area. Cost is dependent on variables such as purpose and distance traveled. Group Trip service is also available for registered Senior Citizens and Persons with Disabilities to destinations within Schuylkill County along with limited out-of-county services to destinations within a 50-mile radius of county borders. Trips can be found on the STS website (www.go-sts.com) or by contacting the Schuylkill County Transportation System at 1-800-832-3322.

New tax forms…previously rolled out by the IRS as a simplified form 1 page that can be “folded as a postcard”. The reduced number of lines is the same as the old form 1040 with 6 detail schedules to attach to it to accomplish the same thing that the 1040 used to accomplish. Therefore the 1040EZ and 1040A are dead and the newer form is a little more complex so 1040EZ and 1040A filers could find themselves paying a higher tax preparation fee than they did in the past. New tax laws…Divorced? Alimony? If you divorce before December 31, 2018 the alimony that you pay is a deduction to you on your taxes and is taxable income to your former spouse, after that it is not. ACA Fine/ Obamacare. If you did not have health insurance in 2018 you may have a fine to pay. The fine does not go away until 2019, provided that law stays the same as it presently is written. Itemizing. If you have itemized in the past you may not be able to do so this year as the standard deductions have gone up for everyone. Credits & Refunds…Child Tax Credits are now $2000/child under age 17 based on income with $1400 being a refundable credit plus there is a new family credit of $500 available for qualified family dependents. Refunds may be short: the IRS is advising people to check their withholdings! The tables were changed by the IRS for the drop in tax rates and that reduced the amount they withheld from your pay! Was enough withheld from your pay? Tax filing for 2018 although “simplified” may be more of a headache than any former year has been. Honest Abe’s will have qualified staff on hand and looks forward to helping customers through the new paths the new law has created. Call for your appointment today 570-8618297. Start Your Pets Off Right Welcoming A Feline To The Family For The New Year Family Features) Introducing a feline into the family can be an exciting time, but it's important to remember that a new home is often a big change for a little cat. Whether it's a kitten or an adult cat, providing your new pet with proper nutrition, the comforts of a good home and engaging playtime are just a few of the key things to keep in mind. Try these simple tips from the experts at the TEMPTATIONS™ brand to help ensure a smooth transition for your new fourlegged family member: • Cat-Proof the House - In addition to being constantly curious, cats are also instinctive climbers, meaning no surface is out of reach for your new pet. Make sure any potentially dangerous items are behind closed doors and inaccessible to your little climber. You can also provide a scratching post to help prevent your cat from scratching unwanted things, like your furniture. • Playtime is a Must - As little as 15-30 minutes of exercise and activity per day can help your cat stay energetic and in shape. Encourage your cat's natural curiosity with engaging toys, such as the TEMPTATIONS™ SNACKY MOUSE™ Toy. Simply fill the mouse-shaped wobble toy with your cat's favorite TEMPTATIONS treats and watch them entertain themselves by trying to knock the treats out of the toy and gobble them up. Playing together can also help strengthen the bond between owner and pet. • Create Some Comfort - Make your new friend truly feel like part of the family by giving him or her a personal spot in the house. A simple bed to call his own, a cat tree to view his new surroundings and some soft toys to play with are all it takes to provide the initial comfort to make your pet feel safe and welcome in a new home. For cats that prefer privacy when they're not playing, a covered or hooded bed is a great option. • Fuel Your Feline - Taking care of your cat's health starts with proper nutrition. Be sure to find a high-quality cat food that has recipes that are nutritionally tailored to meet the specialized needs of your cat. A brand like IAMS™ Cat Food fits that bill and has dry and wet cat food options for all stages of life, from kitten to senior, as well as options to aid in oral care, hairball care, high protein, digestion and metabolism. • Offer Affection - Always remember to show your cat you care. Whether it's a scratch behind the ear, a nice brushing or a sweet cuddle session, your cat can feel loved and safe, knowing he or she is in good, caring hands. For more tips on taking care of a new kitten or cat, visit TemptationsTreats.com.

Early Basketball Cards 1910 To 1969-70 by Rev. Connell A. McHugh For the countless basketball games I attended at the junior high, high school, college and Eastern Professional Basketball levels, at first glance it seems amazing that I never owned a basketball card until I was an adult. I had thousands of baseball cards and also quite a few football cards, especially from two prestigious sets, the 1953 Bowman collection and the 1955 Topps All American ones. Unfortunately, cards from my 1953 Bowman collection are today in very poor condition although I have quite a few stars such as Otto Graham and Y.A.Tittle. Why didn’t I have any basketball cards especially since I attended basketball games regularly? Examining when basketball cards were available during my childhood and early teen years offers substantial evidence why I did not own any basketball cards. The first real basketball set was produced by Bowman Gum and consisted of 72 cards which were 2 and 1/16th by 2 and ½ inches. This was produced only two years after I was born. Unlike their baseball and football sets which also debuted in 1948 and continued through 1955 when Topps Gum bought out Bowman, Bow-

man only produced the 1948 Basketball set. The first 36 cards were produced in greater numbers than those from 37 to 72. The biggest star in the set was George Mikan, card number 69. Mikan was the NBA’s first superstar leading the Lakers who were then in Minneapolis to 5 World championships. In the early 80s, one could purchase the Mikan card, the most expensive card in the set for about $10. Today an excellent to mint of the 1948 Bowman Mikan runs several thousand dollars. Among the names familiar to me in the set is Hal of Famer Bob Davies on whom the famous L.I.U. coach, Clair Bee, who is also a Hall of Famer, based his popular Chip Hilton novels. Davies card is number 10 in the set. Card number 32, William “Red” Holzman, is one of the more expensive cards in the set. Holzman became the most successful coach in the history of the New York Knicks. Joe Fulks, card number 34 is another Hall of Famer who was one of the most prolific scorers in the NBA. Card number 38 is one of the great guards and coaches, Buddy Jeanette who was a teammate and playing coach of Hazleton’s Carl “Red”

12 • Panorama Community Magazine: December 2018

Meinhold when he played for the Baltimore Bullets of the Basketball Association of America which became the NBA. I also recognize card number 40, Stan Miasik who was among the better scorers in the NBA and later played for the Eastern League’s Williamsport Billies along with the controversial Jack Molinas whom I consider one of the greatest basketball players of all-time despite his “train wreck” lifestyle. I can recall watching several Knicks in the set regularly on TV in the 1950s: “Connie the Carpenter” Simmons, an average player who also was a teammate of Meinhold on the Baltimore Bullets and later played in the Eastern League. Bud Palmer who became a respected broadcaster and Carl Braun the last card in the set. Braun was one of the better guards in the NBA in the 1950s. Card number 66 is Jim “The Kangaroo Kid” Pollard who had real leaping ability and was the next best player to Mikan on the Lakers. A couple decades later of course, Billy Cunningham was also labeled “The Kangaroo Kid”. I bought a reprint set of the 1948 original one for around $25. I do have a few original cards

in nice condition such as Red Rocha, a steady NBA player for many years, Leo Klier, a guard from Notre Dame and card number 25, George Senesky of Mahanoy City, the former St. Joseph’s Pa. star who won championships with the Philadelphia Warriors as a player and as a coach. I consider him the most successful person from the Coal Region that was involved with basketball. The next major basketball set to be produced was the 1957-58 Topps one. The cards were larger than the Bowman being 2 ½ by 3 ½ inches. The set also had better color than the Bowman one. Many of the rookie cards in the set became household names. The most expensive card in the set is the rookie card of Bill Russell, the great Celtics center. Among the many fine rookie cards were Russell’s teammates Bob Cousy, Bill Sharman and Tom Heinsohn. Among other Hall of Famers were Philadelphia’s Paul Arizin, Tom Gola and Neil Johnston. The Cincinnati Royals had Jack Twyman and Maurice Stokes. Several star Knicks are in the set such as Carl Braun, Harry “The Horse” Gallatin and Nat “Sweetwater” Clifton. Clifton is expensive since he is the number 1 card in the set and also was a popular former Harlem Globetrotter. Other stars included Bob Pettit, who at the time of his retirement, was the career leading scorer in the NBA, Clyde Lovellette and one of my favorites, Dolph Schayes. The set also has the rookie card of Earl Lloyd of the Syracuse Nationals who along with “Sweetwater” Clifton and Tarzan Cooper were the initial Afro-Americans to play in the NBA. Card number 76 of the 80 card set is that of Swoyersville’s Joe Holup, the only regional player in the set. He was a teammate of Dolph Schayes, Larry Costello and Earl Lloyd on the Syracuse Nationals. After producing their initial basketball set, Topps quickly exited the basketball market which was not nearly as popular as baseball or even football. In 1961-62, Fleer produced a beautiful set of 66 cards. The set is noted for having the rookie cards of Wilt Chamberlain, Elgin Baylor, Oscar Robertson, Jerry West, Hal Greer, Lenny Wilkins etc. The Fleer set contained in action shots of the major stars as well as portraits. In the early 80s, just about any Fleer card could be purchased for $5 or less. Now one could expect to pay in excess of a thousand dollars for a Chamberlain rookie and several hundred dollars for the rookie cards of other superstars. The last set I will treat is the 1969-70 Topps one which has elongated cards measuring 2 ½ by 4 and 11/16 inches. This 99 card set is often referred to as “The Tall Boy Set”. The two most expensive cards are that of the rookie card of Lou Alcindor and the number 1 card in the set of Wilt Chamberlain. Rookies of note are Bill Bradley, Walt Frazier, Elvin Hayes, Connie Hawkins, and another of my favorites, Earl Monroe. The first and last cards of any set are usually expensive because they receive the most abuse and are on the receiving ends of rubber

bands. Following the Topps 1969-70 set, basketball sets were produced every year by Topps and later by other companies. The first basketball cards ever produced were in 1909 or 1910 with the Murad College Series which contained 4 basketball cards in its 6 series of 25 cards of different sports. Williams College which began playing basketball in 1900, is the first basketball card that seems to have been produced. It is a very attractive card with nice colors. The card runs around $125 and up in mid grade (VG-EX) condition. I should also mention that 4 basketball cards appeared in the 1933 Goudey Gum Sports Kings set, one of the most beautiful ever produced, and which offered athletes from many sports including Ruth, Cobb, Thorpe, Tilden etc. The 4 players depicted on the basketball cards are Eddie Burke, the only one of the 4 not in the Basketball Hall of Fame, Nat Holman, Joe Lapchick and Ed Wachter. Holman and Lapchick cost about $200 each in mid grade condition since they were not only famous as players but as coaches as well. Lapchick coached St. John’s and the Knicks. Holman, the most interesting card for me, was the longtime coach of CCNY, the only team to win the NIT and NCAA in the same season. Quite a few of Holman’s players, some of whom were banned from the NBA for shaving points, played here in Hazleton as members of the Hazleton or another Eastern Professional Basketball team. The ones I remember best are Floyd Layne, Ed Roman and Ed Warner. Eddie Burke, Nat Holman and Joe Lapchick played for the Original Celtics who were based out of New York! Burke also played in Wilkes Barre. Ed Wachter was the oldest of the four. Born in 1883, he played in the Albany area from 1899-1924 and later coached 5 college teams. His cards are less expensive than Holman and Lapchick but higher than those of Burke. A mid grade card of Wachter would run around $100 or so.

Some food companies like Berks Ross and Wheaties included basketball players in their multi-sport sets. I have both Mikan and Bob Davies from the Wheaties early 50s set and my favorite basketball card, that of Sherman White from the 1951 set. In my opinion, White was by far the best player to ever put on a Hazleton uniform and played here for nearly a decade. Excessive Holiday Spending Can Lead To A Difficult New Year by Christy M. DeMelfi, Esq. Many people use credit cards to buy some (if not all) of their holiday gifts. While I realize this is relatively normal, everyone should remember to keep spending on credit cards to a minimum. Not everyone needs an extravagant gift. Unfortunately, in our society, many people are materialistic. However, it is important to remember that it is the thought that counts. If it took you several months to pay off the bills from last Christmas, you may want to consider reigning in your spending a bit. Although it is tempting to “buy now” and worry later, that attitude often leads to problems. When the bills from the credit cards start coming in during

January, you may soon realize that you cannot afford all the gifts that you have bought. Cash flow is limited for though, so I understand that many people do use credit cards at the holidays. If you are going to do so, try to take advantage of low (or no) interest promotions offered at many stores. Be sure to pay close attention to the terms of any credit offer though! You want to be able to pay off the full balance on your purchases before the special promotion ends. I wish all Panorama readers a Happy Holiday Season and a safe and healthy New Year!

Innovative School Is A Training Ground For Artists (NAPS)—Art classes have slowly but steadily all but disappeared from public schools over the years. Lack of funding has been the culprit, but educators tend to agree that the arts play a crucial role in the academic and creative development of our children. One public school in Greenville, South Carolina is embracing a different model and provides a haven for young artists from across the state to discover, develop and hone their talents. The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities offers preprofessional training to its students in the areas of creative writing, dance, drama, music, and visual arts. As a public, residential high school serving juniors and seniors, it helps students refine their talents in a master-apprentice community while receiving nationally recognized academic education. The Governor’s School also serves as a resource to all teachers and students in South Carolina, offering comprehensive outreach programs designed to bring together artists, educators, community organizations, and schools. The school is supported by its own foundation—The South Carolina Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities Foundation—by raising revenues to bridge the gap between funds provided to the school through government appropriation and the actual cost of the educational opportunities the school provides to its students. This extraordinary school recently captured the attention of Ovation TV, a cable and digital channel that is dedicated to the arts. Ovation and local cable provider Spectrum acknowledged the school’s contributions to the community and innovative approach to arts education and skills development with a $10,000 award via its Stand for the Arts arts advocacy initiative. SC Governor’s School for the Arts and Humanities’ success provides a great lesson for communities across the country looking to support the arts and encourage the creative development of their youth.

Choosing the right pair of shoes to wear on a regular basis can help ensure the longterm health of your feet, as well as your entire body. The best fit for you depends on your daily use, but nothing is more important than comfort. Not only do ill-fitting shoes make you uncomfortable all day, but they can also cause foot pain or aggravate pre-existing conditions. While comfort is the priority when you’re looking for new shoes, there are a few other things to consider as well: • Not too small, not too big – Shoes that are too big or too small can cause unwanted rubbing and blisters. Find a shoe that gives your toes room to wiggle, but does not allow your foot to slide around. • Don’t fixate on size – Just because you’re a size 9 in one brand, doesn’t mean every shoe brand will fit the same. Shoe sizes can vary among manufacturers, which is why it’s important to try on every new pair of shoes and make sure they fit well. • Wear the right socks – If you are buying

running shoes, wear the kind of sock you would use running when you try the shoes on. That way, you’ll get a better idea of how it will fit during the activity you are buying them for. • Don’t worry about breaking shoes in - If a shoe isn’t comfortable to begin with, it’s never going to be. Proper shoe fit is particularly important if you are diabetic since improper shoe fit can cause blisters and sores that can become serious if not found and treated quickly. If you do have diabetes or a foot problem like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, or hammer toe, custom orthotics can be used to make your shoe more comfortable. MASTER GARDENER: Need Some Gift Ideas? by Mary Ann Miller, Master Gardener

Christmas may be a time for joyful festivities and family celebration, but it can also be stressful. One of the problems many of us face is “what to buy,” especially for those who seem to have few needs. Usually we think in terms of items for immediate use, but there is no reason to rule out gifts that can be enjoyed in the future, such as gardening items. Avid gardeners are always eager to prepare for the new season, and neophytes may be encouraged to begin gardening if they receive helpful gifts. There are choices available for everyone, whether experienced or new to gardening, old or young, blessed with a large yard or limited to a patio.

in weeding, and even has a sharp notch near the handle which can be used to cut twine. I use it for weeding and planting, and its multipurpose design has saved many trips to the shed for additional tools.

Serious gardeners usually already have an array of implements for their work, but tools can become dull and worn. For example really good, sturdy by-pass pruners are always useful in the garden, and because they are used so heavily often need replacement. There are also some less common items which are very useful. My favorite is a garden knife. It is about the size of a trowel. One side of the blade is sharp for cutting through the soil; the other is serrated, which For those who like to grow their plants from enables you to saw through roots that you might encounter. It also has a notched tip which aids seed, there is a variety of seed-starting equipment available. Pre-made shelving with grow lights is wonderful if you can afford it. A somewhat less expensive version is a table-top grow station. Or, with relatively little effort, you could create your own inexpensive growing area with fluorescent shop lights and an open bookcase or other shelving. Special seed trays, heat mats, and seed starting kits are more options. A coupon from a seed catalog is another welcome gift. There are also tools available that enable those with physical limitations to garden more easily. Ratchet pruners and ergonomic tools with “O” shaped handles minimize hand and wrist stress. Flexible, light weight hoses are much easier to handle. Combination garden kneelers/benches assist those with back or knee problems. Elevated garden beds offer no-bend gardening. Such items help senior gardeners to remain active and to continue enjoying a favorite and healthy pastime. Those with limited space would welcome containers for gardening. Some larger ones,

ing encourages them to try new foods that they grow themselves. During the winter they enjoy growing things from seed indoors. Some seed growing kits have glass containers for seeing the root growth of plants. Fast-growing plants help to maintain their interest. Consider something that can be started indoors and then transplanted outside when the weather warms.

such as a whisky barrel, Earth Box, or Grow Box are even appropriate for growing vegetables. Many have water wells which provide consistent moisture and reduce the need for watering. Attractive pots enhance the display of flowers and herbs indoors or out. Containers also provide the flexibility of moving the plant when weather conditions require. I always grow lettuce in an Earth Box and extend the growing season by moving it to a shadier spot when summer heat arrives. Children enjoy gardening, too. It is a wonderful outdoor activity, and vegetable garden-

Most gardeners -- and children -- enjoy bird watching. Winter is when birds are most in need of supplemental food, and they provide lots of entertainment at feeders. Bird houses and baths are wonderful additions to the garden as

well. Bird bath heaters insure a source of water even on the coldest winter days. Our bird bath is often as busy as our feeder during January and February. Books and subscriptions to magazines about gardening and birding also make wonderful gifts. Learning gardening techniques and planning for the growing season is a great pastime on cold winter days. Children enjoy books which help them to identify birds at their feeders. I still have fond memories of the “bird book” I received as a youngster. Those who have limited finances but are physically healthy can give a “coupon” for future gardening tasks. Older gardeners and those with limited time always appreciate a helping hand with outdoor work. An added bonus is the time spent together while working. When shopping for gifts, remember that gardening items are appreciated at any time of year.

Quiet Valley Announces Its 28th Annual Old Time Christmas Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm will present its 28th annual Old Time Christmas event on December 1, 2 and December 8, 9 with candlelit tours leaving every 15 minutes beginning at 3:00 p.m., with the last group going out at 7:00 p.m. More than any other holiday, Christmas celebrations center on the traditions of our families and our heritage. Begin a new tradition with your family this year during an outing to Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm, where the Christmas customs of the past are brought to life. From the softly glowing lantern light to complimentary hot chocolate and cookies, Old

Time Christmas is sure to become a favorite holiday pastime for many years to come. Gather around a bonfire while you wait for your visit to the 1800s to begin. Guides in period clothing will lead guests on their journey into the past beginning with this year’s Victorian skit. Experience a glimpse of an 1890s Christmas as the family makes holiday crafts and decorates the tree. Before you leave take a peek at their Christmas Putz, a homemade nativity and village scene that was a custom the Moravians began and was soon enthusiastically adopted by the Pennsylvania Germans. Afterwards it’s on to the living Nativity located in the barnyard which includes the Quiet Valley farm animals and offers a look at the foundation of this special celebration including a soloist and scripture readings. Then off to a simple log cabin where we discover the root of many special Christmas customs still practiced today. At the one room schoolhouse it is a jolly time as the school marm leads both the musicians and guests in singing their favorite seasonal carols. There is plenty of nervous excitement in the cellar kitchen as folks await a visit from the Belschnikel, a traditional Pennsylvania German character who made his rounds during the Christmas season. He is the one who really knows if you were naughty or nice. A final stop in the Engel Education Building for complimentary refreshments adds a final festive touch to the visit. Atlantic Broadband Delivers New, Custom Viewing Experience With Advanced Search We’ve all experienced the frustration: you finally get a few minutes to relax in front of your TV or with your mobile device and you want to find something worth watching, but without a lot of hassle. Atlantic Broadband has come to the rescue with new, cutting-edge technology by launching its Unified Entertainment System Powered by TiVo®, which is now available in its eastern Pennsylvania service areas including Berwick, Pocono, Schuylkill and surrounding communities. The new Entertainment Experience is much more than an on-screen guide. It’s a sleek entertainment system loaded with powerful search features so users can cut through the clutter to find what they want to watch quickly and easily. It also provides users with tailored, personalized viewing recommendations in real time based on their own viewing preferences, so they’re always presented with the shows they’re most interested in watching. A hallmark of the new entertainment system from Atlantic Broadband is an incredible Voice

Remote. The Voice Remote takes search to a new level, providing fast, super-accurate results, even when only part of a title or a keyword is spoken. Just say it, and the result appears instantly. Users can also search across multiple video sources, including live TV, DVR recordings, Video On Demand and streaming apps, including YouTube and Netflix®. Unlike other providers, Atlantic Broadband has fully integrated Netflix into its platform for the best TV experience available today. Recognizing that viewers will not always be in front of a TV, the new Entertainment system also allows users to access shows on smartphones, tablets and more, both in-home and on-the-go. The latest enhancements from Atlantic Broadband, which acquired MetroCast operations earlier this year, also include new, faster internet speeds up to 250 Mbps. That kind of speed is a necessity if you’re like the typical household that has up to a dozen devices online at the same time. What can 250 Mbps do for

Affordable Affair: 7 Tips For A Holiday Bash On A Budget (BPT) - The days leading up to the holidays tend to be among the busiest of the year, with lots of celebrations taking place over a few short weeks. If you're hosting a holiday celebration of your own, you're following a national trend. Statista reports some 59 percent of Americans anticipate spending on holiday entertaining this year. That said, it's important not to let your party planning become so stressful, time consuming or pricey that it interferes with your enjoyment of the season itself. Don't worry. Preparing for a holiday bash doesn't need to be hugely expensive or overwhelming if you can enlist help for some of the busywork and outsource some of the key elements. Consider the following ideas for bringing friends and family together this year without having to micromanage either your budget or the logistical details.

• Enlist a crew of friends and family members to help with the pre-cleaning, prep, cooking, bartending and final clean-up. Many hands make light work, and working toward a common goal can be a fun part of the gathering itself. • Instead of investing in your own serving ware and glassware, simply head to your nearest party rental store and check off all your needed supplies. The result will be far more elegant than opting for disposable paper products, and you need not worry about how and where you'll store all those pieces afterward. • Worried that your limited furniture collection won't allow guests to fully relax? Instead of buying something new, think about renting some of the fun, comfortable and design-forward seating groups now available for rental. Today's options go way beyond tra-

ditional folding chairs to encompass cocktail tables, rugs, lighting elements, bars and fully configurable sectionals and lounges, many of which can be used inside or out. • To take your party theme a step further, consider the fun of renting a full-sized backdrop that sets the stage while providing a prime selfie opportunity for your guests. Festive settings range from barns to castles to famous landmarks to cityscapes to breathtaking scenes from nature. • Hire a local caterer for your refreshments, or just contract for an attention-grabbing main course. Keep it simple with a traditional meal or opt for a local specialty. • Simplify the entertainment and/or dance music by creating a party playlist on your smartphone ahead of time, then hooking it up to your own speakers. • Finally, don't discount the idea of holding your party at a restaurant or rented event venue. That saves you from time-consuming preparations and cleanup, shifts the liability elsewhere and lets guests come and go at their discretion. Celebrating the holiday season with friends and family can become cost-effective and hassle-free when you turn to a rental store for help. The Cellar Dwellarzz To Appear In December The fourth concert of The Greater Hazleton Concert Series’ 201819 season will feature the Cellar Dwellarzz. The group began with a simple request from a handful of students. After playing together for Music in Our Schools Month in 2016, the students realized they were not ready to end their time together. They asked their directors, Neil Forte III and Jennifer Gerhard, if they could continue playing together but the question was where. Kiddingly, Miss Gerhard offered her basement for practice sessions. Hence, the Cellar Dwellarzz (double zz for jazz) formed although they never actually had to practice in a basement. The group that began with six or seven members has now grown to twenty-seven musicians. Not only have they become an integral part of the community but also serve as role models for others who are passionate about music. The Cellar Dwellarzz will appear at 7:30 PM, Friday, December 7, in the

(Family Features) Gearing up for a big crowd at your holiday festivities can provide moments of excitement, stress, fun and plenty of other emotions as the big dinner draws near. This year, avoid any nagging feelings of doubt with this step-by-step guide to prepare for large gatherings. • Plan in advance. Even if you're typically the last-minute type, the hectic holiday season is no time to wait until a few days ahead of the celebration to throw meals and more together. Instead, be sure to put together a guest list and send invites at least a few weeks out. Take inventory of supplies like silverware, plates, serving dishes and any accessories you'd like to feature at the table. Make an outline of the food each guest is bringing, or, if you'll supply all the food, ensure there will be plenty for every-

one - don't forget to take into account special diets or allergies. • Make a list. Planning only takes you so far if you don't write everything down. Once the menu is determined, list out what you'll need to make the magic happen. Don't forget to jot down easily overlooked items that can be picked up the day of, such as ice. • Remember to thaw. One surefire way to make the big day a big disaster is to forget to thaw your main course. If you're planning to roast a turkey - perhaps the most common centerpiece - remember it takes around a day to thaw for every two pounds of meat. So, for example, it could take close to a week for a 14-pound turkey to fully thaw prior to cooking. • Prep the day before. There are many tasks

(big and small) that can be taken care of the day before guests arrive, making the holiday less stressful for hosts. From whipping up simple appetizers like dips to giving the house a thorough cleaning, there's plenty of pressure that can be taken off your shoulders 24 hours in advance. If you really want to make the big day a breeze, consider cooking your main dish, slicing the meat and placing it in reheating pans one day prior. • Create a schedule. No matter how far in advance you plan or how much prep you complete prior to the festivities, there will always be day-of work to be done. With guests coming in and out, it can be helpful to lay out what's known as a "fire list," which details times chronologically for when things need done, such as starting the oven to warm the turkey or simply remembering to lay out dessert following the meal. Windshield wipers and washers It is easy to break windshield wipers in winter because they can freeze to the glass, or get torn on ice and sleet. The worst time to realize it is time to replace windshield wipers need to be replaced is during a downpour or blizzard. Winter wiper blades are specifically constructed for icy conditions. During winter, it is even more important take care of your car since common problems are more likely to occur. The ratings, released on Nov. 8, reflect how well hospitals protect patients from accidents, errors, injuries and infections. measure of quality reflect the dedication and commitment of all our colleagues—physicians, nurses and many, many others—to ensure that the safety of our patients always comes first,” said Brian Nester, DO, MBA, FACOEP, LVHN’s President and Chief Executive Officer, “This safe environment is conducive to the high quality care patients expect and deserve.” “Leapfrog’s Hospital Safety Grades recognize hospitals like Lehigh Valley HospitalCedar Crest Lehigh Valley Hospital-Muhlenberg, Lehigh Valley Hospital-Hazleton and Lehigh Valley Hospital-Pocono that focus on advancing patient safety. CEO of The Leapfrog Group. “Hospitals that earn an A Hospital Safety Grade deserve to be recognized for their efforts in preventing medical harm and errors.” “This is evidence of a health care team that is focused on patient safety every day,” says Anthony Valente, MD, LVH–Hazleton Chief Medical Officer. “I am proud of our entire medical staff and all of my LVH–Hazleton colleagues who earned this achievement. The community should feel very comfortable coming to us for their medical care.” “Congratulations to the Hazleton team for earning this distinction,” said John Fletcher, LVH–Hazleton President. “LVH–Hazleton staff work relentlessly in providing quality health care to our community and it is great to see these efforts recognized. Do You Have Problems? by John Degenhart, DC Wouldn’t it be great if you had no problems? Aren’t you tired of having problems? Don’t you wish all our problems could disappear? All day long, I listen to people’s problems. Who has health problems, who has stress at their job, who has problems at home, and the list goes on. Here is what I have learned, I hope it helps you. Because I’ll be direct, life will always present you with problems. You will never be without problems. So we must learn to cope and find happiness without trying to escape our problems with drugs, alcohol, or opioids. Most people who first encounter a problem will ask “why me?” I have learned not to ask “why, but rather what. What Lord are you trying to teach me?” People will tell me they tried everything to so solve their problem and the last hope they have is to pray. I tell you, we have it backwards. Prayer should not be our last option, but our first option. If we truly believe that we can connect with the Ultimate Power in the Universe, that with any problem, we should

pray first. We all know this but we are weak. Our problems wear us down. The key I believe is to first have a faith and then develop a routine to renew your faith. The Bible says, “Faith comes by hearing and by hearing the word of God. You need to get away from your screens, get to Church or Temple, and make time for God’s word to give you faith. Now this is crucial. Surround yourself with godly people, who will uplift and encourage

you. Most people when you are going through a problem, they really don’t want you to be any happier than they are with their problems, so they will discourage your further. With your family, your friends, all material things will ultimately still leave you with an emptiness at times. I pray you develop a daily walk with the Lord. Then in the midst of your problem, any problem, you say, “Lord I know you are with me. This shall pass. I praise you for giving me the strength to overcome this problem. Amen” You have the power within you to make this holiday season one of happiness. I will pray you have the courage to make it happen, one step at a time. May you and your family have a Blessed Christmas!

Coping With Cancer During The Holidays As the classic holiday song goes, it is the most wonderful time of the year. But do you know what else the happiest season of all brings? Stress. With all the planning, shopping, decorating and cooking, it’s easy to become tired and overwhelmed. When cancer treatment is added to the mix, holiday stress can become unbearable. If you or someone you love has cancer this holiday season, use these tips from the American Cancer Society to help lift your spirits and manage your merriment (and stress): Do: - Give yourself permission to feel and express your feelings, whether of joy, fear, sadness, or pain. Let yourself laugh or cry. - Take care of yourself: Eat balanced meals and make time for some exercise. Physical activity is a good way to release tension. - Allow yourself simple pleasures -- hot baths, naps, favorite foods -- that will help lift your mood. Find distractions like going to a movie, dinner, or a ball game; playing cards with friends; or other activities you enjoy. - Prepare for the holidays. Decide if you want to continue certain traditions or create new ones. Plan in advance how you want to spend your time, with whom, and for how long. - Enlist support for organizing holiday gatherings, meal preparation, and cleanup. - Learn to say no. You don't have to participate in everything. People will understand if you can't do certain activities. Don’t: - Don't pressure yourself with unrealistic expectations or try to do everything yourself. - Don't overindulge in alcohol. Because alcohol is a depressant, it can “bring out” or heighten bad feelings. - Don't try to force yourself to be happy just because it’s the holiday season. - Don't shop ‘til you drop. Stick to a budget if you are going shopping. Buying things will not make up for any negative feelings you are having. Decide how much money you can afford to spend on gifts and other items. Then stick to your budget. - Don't try to do too much in one day. Plan ahead, setting aside specific days for specific tasks. - Don't abandon healthy habits. Eat and drink in moderation. Get plenty of sleep. Coping with cancer during the holidays can be tough. Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton understands and is here to help. With over 32 years of experience, the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton combines the convenience of

receiving your cancer treatments close to home with the effectiveness of advanced, high quality cancer care. Our patient care approach is more than just a focus on cancer treatment, it’s about making you feel at home, comfortable, and confident in the care you are receiving. That is always important, but even more so during the busy holiday season. Your time is vital and we want you to spend as much as you can at home,

celebrating with your loved ones. The treatment team at Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton care and we want you to have the most joyful, stress-free holiday you can have. We are here to answer any questions you may have and the American Cancer Society has a resource center on site for added guidance. Everyone at Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton wishes you a happy and healthy holiday season!

Slippery Season: Mayo Clinic Offers 10 Tips For Avoiding Falls (BPT) - With the winter season approaching, you may need to pay closer attention to watching your step. Even if you're active, healthy and full of life, statistics show that you have a greater chance of taking a debilitating fall as you age. Mayo Clinic notes that some 400,000 "fragility fractures" occur annually due to falls injuring osteoporosisweakened bones. "We get injured when we try to do things beyond our abilities," notes Kim Lombard, an injury prevention coordinator at Mayo Clinic. "Often I hear 'I knew I shouldn't have done it, but I did' or 'I knew I should have asked for help.' People are so afraid to lose their independence they don't want to ask for

help, but asking for help actually extends their independence." Lombard offers several suggestions for minimizing your chances of a debilitating fall this season. • Inspect your home for hazards inside and out. Which floors, steps, sidewalks or other surfaces could become slippery from melted snow and ice? Which floor coverings and floorboards could cause tripping? Should you install nonslip treads, railings and/or ramps? • Arrange to have driveways and sidewalks plowed and salted. Consider contracting out these chores for peace of mind when bad weather hits. • Walk like a penguin. People of any age should take short, careful steps when navigating snow or ice, adopting a wide stance and pointing feet slightly outward to maintain a center of balance. Keep your hands out of your pockets for added leverage. • Exercise your legs and core. Intense weightlifting isn't necessary; you can improve

strength, balance, coordination and flexibility through low-impact yoga, tai chi, water workouts or dance. • Know your limitations. Remember that you're probably not as nimble as you used to be, and your balance could be reduced if you're on certain medications, have hearing issues and/or you've been drinking. • Protect yourself with good footwear. Avoid stocking feet. Whether inside or out, wear close-fitting shoes and boots that provide good traction. Consider investing in handy removable ice cleats that strap right onto your shoes or boots for walking on slippery surfaces. • Keep your head up. Instead of checking your phone, digging in your purse or reading your shopping list, pay close attention to where you're walking. • Use railings. Get in the habit of holding on whenever you pass. • Take it easy. Give yourself plenty of time to get in and out of your car and to walk to and from your destination. • Be prepared. Wear winter gear even on short walks so you'll be protected if you take a spill. And always bring your phone so you can call for help as needed. Taking steps to modify your environment or behavior can go a long way to ensure that you stay safe this winter season. For more health tips and information, please visit us at mayoclinic.org.

Teresa Jacketti & Her Staff Wish All Of You A Very Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!

Our Sincerest Holiday Greetings To Our Most Valued by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. Peace, hope, and joy are sentiments that can never be expressed often enough. Another is our heartfelt gratitude to you, our patients, who have made the growth of our thriving practice possible through your loyalty and friendship. It's truly astonishing to think how quickly yet another holiday season has arrived. Before we all get too caught up in what seems like an endless flurry of activity, we'd like to take a moment to reflect on the year that has just passed. There's no doubt in the minds or hearts of our team that the bonds of friendship and trust we share with our practice family make everything easier. From the minute fall appears on the calendar, time starts flying by ushering in the holidays. The parties, dinners, shopping and traveling all start keeping us busy. There is so much to do that we sometimes forget, or slack on our routines. We eat and drink more than normal, consuming rich foods and beverages. Our bedtimes get off schedule not to mention our bedtime routines. However, we shouldn’t let the holiday season be an excuse to forego proper oral care. No doubt about it, during the holiday festivities we all consume more sugar with desserts and snacks. This in turn, exposes our teeth to more cavity-causing bacterial acids. When we travel during the holidays, overnight stays away from home can disrupt our daily brushing and flossing regiment. However, there are ways you can keep your routine in place and keep that beautiful smile healthy, even while dancing, dining and partying through the night. At just about every drug store, grocery store, or big box store there is a section of travel size hygiene product. You can find shampoo, conditioner, bath soap, and even toothbrushes, toothpaste, and dental floss! Whether you have room in your luggage at home or have to pick these items up when you get to your destination, you can have all the comforts of essentials to keep your routine of good dental hygiene in place and on track. While you’re dining and partying, you can alter some things that will be helpful in keeping the sugar attack mild for your teeth. Replace your usual piña colada or daiquiri with a club soda with lime. If you desire an alcoholic drink, order a dry red or white wine instead. Get a jump on the holidays and take care of any dental procedures before the parties start. Delaying root canals, fillings or other procedures could ruin your holidays by causing problems later. It’s no fun being in pain while every-

one else is eating, drinking, and being merry! Plan to enjoy your holidays and get your dental appointment set today with us at Frank M. Glushefski Dentistry at (570) 443-9892. If you have questions or concerns about what’s going on and how it will impact your holiday vacation, let us know. We may offer suggestions or make recommendations to help you keep that

beautiful healthy smile you have worked all year long to have! In closing, we are honored by your ongoing loyalty and patronage and look forward to sharing another year with you. Wishing you a safe, happy, and healthy holiday season!

by Stephen Schleicher, MD. Many of my patients religiously take dietary supplements, often under the assumption that these will prevent cancer. My skepticism of this strategy began years ago when I learned that 1) Linus Pauling, the champion of magadoses of Vitamin C as a cure for everything ranging from the common cold to cancer, died of prostate cancer, and 2) Adelle Davis, one of the first over-the-top nutritional supplement gurus, died of bone cancer at age 70. Davis, when asked about her disease, rationalized that she would probably have died a lot earlier if she hadn’t followed her “healthy” lifestyle. Perhaps Davis was correct, but readers should take note of the following reported on CBS news titled: “Dietary supplements linked to increased cancer risk”. To quote from the story: “Consumers are always looking for ways to minimize their cancer risk, which is one reason why many turn to over-the-counter vitamin and mineral supplements. But new research finds that while companies promote dietary supplements for their cancerprevention benefit, some may end up doing more harm than good”. Cited are 12 scientific studies involving over 300,000 people demonstrating that a number of supplements increase the risk of developing certain types of cancer rather than protecting against the disease. The analysis revealed that “people who took high doses of beta carotene supplements had an increased risk for lung cancer,” while “selenium supplements were associated with skin cancer” and “men who took vitamin E had an elevated risk for prostate cancer.” An exception is Vitamin D; high levels reduce the risk of colon and breast cancer. To quote a physician expert on nutrition: “There is no magic health bullet. People should stop wasting their money on vitamins and supplements, and instead invest in a high-quality diet… i.e. minimally processed plant-based foods such as fruits, vegetables and nuts, which are naturally rich in most of these required vitamins and minerals.” Great advice.

Common Beauty Mistakes by Melissa M. DeBello, OD, Hazleton Eye Specialists With the holidays coming, many of us may be buying beauty products for ourselves or others. Here are some ingredients to avoid when looking for products as they can cause eye irritation. • Sodium Laurel Sulfate • Phenoxyethanol • Triretinoin (Retin-A) • BAK • DMDM-Hydantoin • Quaternium-15 • Imidazolidnyl Urea • Diazolidinyl Urea • Bromo-2-Nitropropane-1, 3-diol • Parabens Beauty products are unfortunately not regulated by the FDA, therefore it is important for the consumer to avoid these ingredients in order to prevent problems like chronic dry eye disease or ocular infection. Now that we know some

of the ingredients to avoid, let’s list other beauty mistakes to avoid: • Using Waterproof Eye Makeup • Having eyeliner tattooed or lining the eye’s waterline • Getting eyelash extension or having lashes permed or tinted • Applying over the counter eyelash growth serums • Using Botox-In-A-Jar or getting Botox for “crow’s feet” • Retin-A use • Applying loose eye shadow or glitter • Sharing makeup • Not replacing make-up or cleaning applicators regularly • Using harsh make-up removers or not removing make-up nightly • Chronic Visine Offeruse Good Black Friday (Nov. 25th) thru Christmas • Buying colored contacts onlineEve (Dec. 23rd) If you are currently making these mistakes and need guidance with your beauty products or practices, please contact our doctors at Hazleton Eye Specialists for advice.

Holiday Scams: What Seniors Should Look Out For by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers Scammers and con artists are all around us these days. It seems that no matter where we turn, there’s a nefarious individual or group looking to scam us. To make matters worse, they’re becoming more sophisticated in their approach. As we rely more heavily on the technology at our fingertips, sometimes all it takes is a wrong click and suddenly our personal information and money is up for grabs. And what’s the most wonderful time of the year for scammers? The holiday season, of course. It’s a time of giving, charitability, and all-around goodwill – but all of that can make us more vulnerable to the schemes that are out there. Seniors are certainly no exception. It’s common for scammers to target seniors because they often have large nest eggs and exceptional credit scores, but little financial management. Additionally, memory issues and cognitive de-

cline may make them more willing to give up valuable information. Knowing what to look out for can save seniors from having their finances or even identity compromised. Below are some of the more common scams that target older adults during the holiday season. Share these with senior clients so that they can stay guarded and safely enjoy the holiday season. Common Scams to Look Out for During the Holidays • “Emergency” Calls: This tactic, which has gained considerable traction over the last few years, involves the scammer calling a senior, claiming to be a grandchild or other family member in need of money. They often say that they’ve been arrested, in an accident, or just need emergency funds in general. Seniors who receive such calls should ask specific questions that will

trip up the caller. In most cases, the scammer will not be able to answer these questions and hang up in frustration. When in doubt, the best thing to do when an unknown number pops up is to simply not answer. • Phony Email Offers: Most personal email inboxes are full of promotional offers, and this certainly ramps up during the holidays. First and foremost, if the offer sounds too good to be true, it probably is. Scammers create emails that looklegitimate but contain links that lead to pages requesting personal information. Seniors should look every promotional email offer over carefully, paying close attention to the sender address (it should have a proprietary address such as @amazon.com or @target.com) and anything unusual like misspellings. A good rule of thumb when it comes to entering sensitive information into any website is to ensure that the URL begins with “https.” This signifies that the site is secure and encrypted. • Free Gift Cards: Speaking of offers that are too good to be true, seniors may come across emails or flashy website ads that advertise free gift cards. While some companies have deals where you receive gift cards after purchase, you can safely assume the ones that say ‘free’ without purchase are entirely illegitimate. Seniors should not click on the accompanying links or ads for these offers. • Illegitimate Charity: It’s the season of giving, but it’s important to know where exactly your charitable donations are going. Seniors should be wary of any unfamiliar organizations or those whose appeals are overtly emotional. To confirm the legitimacy of an organization, seniors can utilize the website give.org. Comfort Keepers®Can Help The holiday season is the perfect opportunity to spend time with friends, family, neighbors, and all others who bring joy to our lives. That makes it all the more difficult to imagine that there are those out there who wish to rob people of that joy – but they are out there. At Comfort Keepers®, our aim is to preserve the joy, warmth, and wonder that seniors and other adults cherish during the holiday season. We will work to reduce their risk of being conned, not only from the schemes above, but also any others that may exist. Our caregivers can also provide help with togetherness tasks and daily routines. Call your local Comfort Keepers location to learn more about how we can help seniors and other adult clients this holiday season.

Are You Afraid Of Falling? How You Can Improve Your Balance by Ting Oh, PT, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers Are you at risk of falling and don’t know it? Falling amongst seniors is a major concern and recent research has shown many people at risk of falling may not even know it until it’s too late. Falling can cause serious problems and be a life changing event. Every year one third of seniors fall and every 11 seconds an older adult is treated in the ER due to a fall. Many suffer serious injuries including broken hips and brain injuries. Falls account for 25% of hospital admissions, 40% of nursing home admission and every 19 minutes, someone will die because of a fall related injury. Preventing falls should be a priority for seniors and knowing whether you are at risk of falling can go a long way in preventing them. Many people don’t actually know they are at risk of falling. 21% of people who believed they were not going to fall actually did over the next 6 months indicating they may have had problems and not known about them. There are many factors that can increase your risk of falling including flexibility, strength, balance and vision. Many of these factors can be addressed and improved upon. In an in-house study done, it was found people who underwent a Fall Prevention Program had a 35% improvement in their balance significantly improving their risk of falling and allowing them to do more with less fear. So of the people who are 65 or older, 30% will fall and it could be someone who didn’t think they were at risk. This can cause serious injuries including brain injury or broken hip which can result in nursing home admission and death. If

this doesn’t sound good to you, there is a way you can prevent it We have dedicated time in our busy schedule to talk to you more about fall prevention. We make room for free Q&A session where we can answer your questions and get to know a little about you so we can determine if you would be a good candidate for our fall prevention program So if you are sitting there thinking, I have plenty of time and it can wait. Many people have thought that and waited too long. Your first fall may be the one that changes your life drastically We see too often the after effects of falls as

I have treated many people who have suffered serious injuries because of them. If we could just find those people who are at risk of falling and get them into a program that can prevent that fall, we can go a long way in making a big difference in our seniors’ lives and help them love their life as they age. To schedule your Free Falls Risk Assessment, call us at 570-501-1808. Do You Know If You Have COPD? (NAPS)—A staggering number of people across the world are impacted by chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), experiencing often debilitating symptoms such as shortness of breath, wheezing and coughing. Despite how common COPD is across the globe, awareness of the signs, symptoms and treatment options for the disease remains low. Too often, diagnosed patients and their families do not know what COPD is, how it will affect their lifestyle or what treatment options are available. Some patients may even hesitate to seek care due to the social stigma associated

with the disease.1 The Reality of COPD COPD is a progressive, life-threatening disease that is estimated to affect more than 251 million people worldwide, and is on track to become the third leading cause of death by 2020.2,3 In the U.S. alone, it is estimated that 12 million adults have COPD, with another 12 million living undiagnosed.4 For patients and their families, it can be challenging to figure out how to manage the lifestyle changes that are required to properly manage COPD symptoms. Modern advances such as long-term oxygen therapy systems (both stationary and portable), noninvasive mechanical ventilation, and drug delivery technologies have helped enable patients to live longer and more actively. However, it’s crucial that patients remain adherent to their therapy programs in order to minimize COPD exacerbations. According to Dr. Teofilo Lee-Chiong,

With the right therapy regimen, you can enjoy an active lifestyle with COPD.

chief medical liaison at Philips, “COPD often presents challenges for patients to partake in daily activities. While COPD is a chronic condition, it doesn’t need to be a debilitating disease.” New advancements in connected care technology offer patients the opportunity to help maintain their quality of life by receiving treatment at home through remote monitoring. Connected care solutions also provide patients with a strong support network, allowing local care teams to keep patients motivated and assist with day-to-day activities.

Adjusting to a COPD Diagnosis If you or a loved one is living with COPD, a diagnosis can be a lot to take in. In addition to being adherent to therapy, Dr. Lee-Chiong believes that with a positive outlook and an active lifestyle, COPD patients can take back control of their lives. Among Dr. Lee-Chiong’s tips, he recommends: • Having a positive mind-set—It’s important to have a positive outlook on the disease and to understand that the key to remaining active lies within yourself. • Defining your goals—Continue to ask yourself what you want to accomplish. Start by setting short-term and long-term goals. • Maintaining a healthy lifestyle— Sustaining a healthy diet with proper nutrition, adequate sleep, and exercising is key. A poor diet can make symptoms worse and can negatively affect your ability to exercise and remain active. While exercise may seem challenging, start with enhancing strength, endurance and flexibility by breaking down tasks into smaller parts and scheduling frequent rest periods. • Giving it time—Progress doesn’t happen overnight, but with exercise and a healthy diet, your strength and endurance can recover and your quality of life can improve. • Knowing your options—Educate yourself about the available treatment options to manage your COPD symptoms and work with your care provider to develop a therapy regimen that’s tailored to fit the level of activity you wish to maintain in your lifestyle. If you or a loved one has recently been diagnosed, or is experiencing symptoms of COPD, visit www.Philips.com/COPDHealth-Awareness.
