Top 10 Most Common New Year's Resolutions And How To Follow Through On Them Every year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, hoping to spark positive change. The recurring themes each year include a more active approach to health and fitness, improved finances, and learning new things for personal and professional development. Chances are, more than a couple of the top 10 most common resolutions will look familiar to you: Exercise more, Lose Weight, Get Organized, Learn A New Skill/ Hobby, Live Life To The Fullest, Save More Money and Spend Less, Quit Smoking, Spend More Time With Family and Friends, Travel and Read More. However once the glow of a fresh new year wears off, many people struggle to make good on their plans. According to a study published in the Journal of Clinical Psychology, only 46% of people who made New Year’s resolutions were successful. That means over half of the people who set a goal for the New Year will fail! The study also involved non-resolvers, people who did not make a New Year’s resolution, but had a goal they wanted to achieve that year. Only 4% of non-resolvers were successful at achieving their goals, a far bleaker result than those who did make a New Year’s resolution. If you want to realize your 2020 New Year’s resolution this year, follow these 10 steps: 1. Mentally Prepare for Change. Changing ingrained habits is no easy task, so before diving head-first into your New Year’s resolution, it is important to take a step back and get ready for that impending change. 2. Set a Goal That Motivates You. To do this, you need to make sure the goal you set is im-

portant to you and only you and that there is value or benefit for you in achieving the goal. It is these two things that will provide the reason and willingness to take action. This is also known as motivation! 3. Limit Resolutions to a Manageable Amount. A common mistake in resolution setting is having too many and spreading yourself too thin. We only have so much attention span we can dedicate to self-improvement, so having too many resolutions is a great way not to achieve the many goals you have set out for yourself. You should make a short list of resolutions that you can manage in the upcoming year. 4. Be Specific. When it comes to setting resolutions, it’s easy to set bad goals that could lead to poor follow through. Fortunately, SMART goal setting framework can help you craft better goals. Make sure your smart goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-sensitive. 5. Break up Big Goals into Smaller Goals. A lot of us tend to be over eager and grandiose when it comes to resolutions. We have the best of intentions and may accidentally take on a goal that is too big to achieve. Thus, it’s helpful to divide a big goal into smaller goals that are more achievable. 6. Write down Your Goals. While it’s great to have goals, it is critical to document them in some way so you don’t forget. It is also important to write them down for clarity and to establish your intentions. Documented goals will help you overcome resistance to progress. Your written goals spur you forward when you hit a speed bump or obstacle. Written goals are a reminder of how far you have come and what you have achieved.

6 • Panorama Community Magazine: January 2020

7. Share Your Resolutions with Others. It’s great to make a resolution for yourself and maybe even write it down, but if no one else knows about it, it’s easy to forget about or even ignore it. Once you’ve gone public, you feel a sense of obligation and accountability. Crazy as it sounds, this sense of guilt is often more powerful than self-motivation. 8. Automate Where Possible. The good news is you probably have technology in your pocket that can help you follow through on your resolution - automation in the form of reminder apps. There are a million different apps and services to help you follow through on your resolutions such as Google Calendar, Google Now, Reminders (on iOS) and Boomerang for Gmail. These free tools can help provide a constant reminder. 9. Review Your Resolution Regularly. Let’s face it; if you are not thinking about your resolution regularly, you are not going to follow through. A crucial part of realizing your goal is a regular review. This review should be monthly, but the more frequent the better. 10. If You Fall Off Track… Get Back On Quick We’ve established it will take time for your resolution to become a reality and we know change is difficult. In fact, we’ve already established we should leave some room for mistakes and setbacks, but so long as they are handled correctly, they will not impact the big goal. We hope these 10 steps help you follow through with your resolutions and make 2020 your best year yet. The family and staff at Panorama Community Magazine would like to take this opportunity to wish everyone a very Happy, Healthy & Prosperous New Year!!

What To Expect From Your Tax Preparer by Alice Horton, CEO, Honest Abe’s Taxes Tax Time is here again. 90% of tax payers seek advice, either from a paid preparer or tax software. Are you getting your money’s worth for that advice? Let’s look at what your tax preparer should be providing you. #1. Accurate Return. Accurate returns are the result of the questions your preparer is knowledgeable enough to ask in order to maximize any tax strategies applicable to your return. Inaccurate returns can cause you to be audited, delay your refund; and/or cost you tax dollars. You should be receiving the maximum legal refund and/or paying the accurate tax. The motto at Honest Abe’s is “Don’t Stress, Pay Less” (this is in regards to your refund and fee)! #2. Timely Returns. Returns with balance dues need to file by April 15 to avoid penalties. Extensions do not “extend” paying taxes. If you have your tax information to your preparer in a timely fashion, an extension should not be needed. At Honest Abe’s we strive to reduce the number of extensions we do.

#3. Accurate Advice and Tax Planning. If you are unhappy with your refund or balance due, discuss with your preparer how to fix it. If you have penalties or owe taxes, ask your preparer how to change your withholding or pay estimated taxes. If you are a business you and your preparer should be reviewing your business records during the year for tax implications. Honest Abe’s encourages all customers to come in for reviews! #4. Availibility. Do you have questions? Can you reach your preparer? Do you call and get no return calls? Many national franchise offices are not open but one day a week after April 30. A full firm, such as Honest Abe’s is open year round. Honest Abe’s staff will return your call. #5. Notices Received. If you receive a notice after your taxes are done your preparer should help interrupt and review that notice. At Honest Abe’s if you bring it by we do review and advise you what it is, and how to fix it, if it is

8 • Panorama Community Magazine: January 2020

not something that we need to address for you. #6. Fee. Filing taxes is a requirement. National franchise offices main income is simply income tax filing; these places charge $200 to $600 (including bank products). At Honest Abe’s tax filing is an added service and therefore priced as such. Our fees are $95 to $125 for the common taxpayer; about $225 for people with bank products; and about $300 for complicated personal returns. Honest Abe’s email is “yourtaxpartner”. Our motto is “Don’t Stress, Pay Less”. Our fees are lower than the franchises. Come be a part of our family, we care! Honest Abe’s Business & Tax Services, 310 S. Shakeable Snow Globes Snow artistry has taken on many forms when it comes to winter collectibles including the ever-popular snow globe. Snow globes, snow domes, or as the German's call them,

schneekugeln were first introduced in France during the early 1800s as a successor to the hand-blown glass paperweight. At the 1889 International Exposition in Paris, the snow globe got worldwide attention as a souvenir. This world’s fair snow globe featured a model of the newly built Eiffel Tower designed by Gustave Eiffel inside. Initially, snow globes consisted of a heavy lead glass dome that was placed over a ceramic tableau. Central European artisans blew glass globes to protect religious relics and clockwork movements started to export their glassware to the growing snow globe industry. The globes were filled with water and then sealed. Shaking the globe made the snow inside move within the globe from all directions as if demonstrating a windy blizzard. The snow inside the snow globe was created with bone chips, porcelain pieces, or non-soluble soap flakes. More recently, the snow inside a typical snow globe is produced from tiny pieces of white plastic and enhanced with distilled water and glycerin to make the water denser and snow appear to realistically move within the globe atmosphere. In the 1940s, snow globes were produced as advertising paperweights and as travel souvenirs and keepsakes of vacations. In the Victorian era, the British called the collectible tableaus “snowstorms” as they gained popularity from circa 1890 to 1901. Despite their European beginnings, snow globes were mass-produced in the U.S. thanks to Pittsburgh, PA native, Joseph Garajha. The first mass-production patent for snow globes featured Garajha's new base which allowed the globe to be screwed into it like a light bulb. Today, snow globes are traded and collected worldwide. Today, the specialty annual snow globes featuring products and characters from companies like Louis Vuitton, Chanel, and Disney are big gifts with collectors. These collectible themed snow globes find themselves on holiday shopping lists worldwide and some range in value from $500 to $5,000 at auction. Whether your winter is filled with days building your own Frosty on the front lawn or sipping hot cocoa by the fire, snowy season collectibles are fine additions to your home and will surely satisfy your need to decorate with a seasonal flair. Foster Is A Verb! by Missy Nenstiel, Brandon’s Forever Home

The word foster means to encourage or promote the development of something. It’s an action that we all do on a day to day basis from caring for our own families, pets, houseplants, projects, even careers! The list goes on and on. What does it take to be a foster parent? Commitment, understanding, and love. The same characteristics that you possess to accomplish everything else in your day! The term “foster” is typically used to describe a child or a family. It’s a word that might invoke feelings of judgement or stigmas that simply put, are false! Yes, it is true that there are foster children and foster families, many of whom you might know through school, work, your community or even your family. These children have fallen into this circumstance due to no fault of their own and these

families are putting in the effort to give them the best life possible. People are interested in becoming a foster parent for many reasons. Some have been inspired by something they’ve seen in the media, some are previous foster children and want to give back, while others simply have an open heart. Just as there are many different reasons people want to foster there are many different ways they can become involved. Children find themselves being removed from their biological family for a multitude of reasons, all of which are not the fault of the child. These children are loving, observant, and willing to be a part of a family who is eager to show them kindness and acceptance. The act of fostering a child or group of children is one that not only provides so much for the child but for the foster family as well. Typically, foster families can accept children on a few different terms. One of which is through kinship. Kinship is usually a family member like a grandparent, aunt or uncle,

taking in a child while the biological parents work towards family reunification. Traditional foster families can accept children in various ways. This would be based on emergency placements which can be for just a few days or a weekend until family or a long-term foster family is located, long term fostering which sounds just like it is described or fostering to adopt. Fostering to adopt is for a family interested in caring for the child as part of their own family indefinitely. Whichever way an individual or family is interested in helping children, there is a path for them to follow! Foster families are like any other. Just like children are all ages, races, partner preferences, and backgrounds, diverse foster families are all around us! If you are interested in learning more about how you can help local children contact us at Brandon’s Forever Home. We are here to help guide you on your journey, wherever that may go and to be a resource for you should you become an approved foster home.

Connecting Veterans And Volunteers Nationwide (NAPS)—If you would like to help a veteran, if you are a veteran who needs extra help, or know of one in your community, here’s good news. There’s a new, nationwide resource that makes it easy to match civicminded individuals with those who need a little assistance. The database, called VolunteerforVeterans.org, was created by DAV

(Disabled American Veterans), a nonprofit charity that helps veterans get their benefits and services. Here’s how it works. Veterans, as well as their caregivers, can use the site to seek assistance by entering the type of help they need, from basic tasks such as yardwork, help with errands or other services. friends who know of a veteran in need of help can step in to coordinate requests on their behalf. On the flip side, volunteers who are interested in giving their time can use the site to look for and respond to requests for help. Using the site is easy, and at no cost to veterans or volunteers. Go to www.VolunteerforVeterans.org, click on the “sign up” icon and indicate whether you are a veteran or caregiver who needs help, a friend or neighbor making a request on someone’s behalf, or a volunteer willing to give support. Choose your state and the screen will populate with requests. There is no minimum time requirement for volunteering, and groups, such as the Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, can participate. Volunteer opportunities are updated daily, so individuals and groups are encouraged to check back often. Opportunities to volunteer vary from activities that require special skills to basic assistance around the house, such as fixing and serving a meal, home maintenance, laundry, cleaning, grocery shopping, paperwork, carpentry, automotive repair and more. One important and growing need, particularly for the aging veteran population, is transportation to medical appointments. At one time, the federal government provided assistance for veterans to help them access the care they earned. Unfortunately, that program was stopped in 1987. Since then, DAV has stepped in to coordinate no-cost rides through volunteer drivers to get ill and injured veterans to their scheduled care at VA medical facilities. Drivers are provided training and use DAV-donated vehicles for transporting veterans. Volunteers may select the days that best fit their schedule. “Giving even just a few hours of time a month can make a huge difference in the lives of veterans who need help,” says John Kleindienst, DAV’s National Voluntary Services Director. “VolunteerforVeterans.org makes the process of providing and receiving lifechanging help easy.” To find out about volunteering, or if you are a veteran in need of assistance, go to www. VolunteerforVeterans.org.

Wedding Planning 101 (Family Features) First comes the proposal then comes the wedding planning. There are dozens of decisions that need to be made before it's time to walk down the aisle, which can be overwhelming for brides and grooms. To help make it less stressful, these tips from Macy's can help couples through the entire wedding-planning process, from ontrend apparel and accessories for the entire wedding party to all the essentials to create a perfect registry. • Dressing the Ladies—When it comes to bridesmaid dresses, the mix-and-match approach is trending in popularity. Start by deciding on a color palette, such as lilac, champagne and petal pink. Then have each bridesmaid choose her favorite style within that range of hues. Bring it all together by choosing a uniform look for makeup, shoes and accessories. There is no better time to thank the ladies than the morning of the big day. A few thoughtful gifts can go a long way, such as matching robes, tumblers to stay hydrated throughout the day and cosmetic cases to stow makeup essentials. • Dressing the Gents—Similar to bridesmaid dresses, groomsmen attire can be dependent on the venue and overall event aesthetic. While a suit can fit the bill for a country club wedding, a city affair may call for the sleek finishes of a tux. Tuxedo accessories, such as cuff links or bow ties, make great groomsmen gifts and are classic pieces they can use time and time again. • Creating the Perfect Registry—When building a registry, it's never too early to start. People want to give gifts as soon as they know a couple is engaged. Start by taking inventory of what you already have, what you need and what you want to upgrade. It's also recommended to update the registry regularly so there are enough gifts to choose from, especially if there is an engagement party and

bridal shower coming up. To get started, some popular registry items include stand mixers, craft beer glasses, Dutch ovens, bath towels and vacuums. For extra guidance, couples can speak to advisors who can help with the full registry building process at Macy's stores. For more wedding ideas and inspiration, and to find the right attire and gifts for your wedding planning, visit macys.com.

Tips to Enhance Your Wedding Decor (Family Features) Wedding days are meant to be filled with love and celebration, and what better way to ring in the new stage of life as newlyweds than with a well-decorated venue to match the joyous occasion. Whether a couple is on a tight budget or picky when it comes to theme ideas, these decorating tips can help add more flair for the big day. • Use a natural venue. Many couples choose wedding venues that require immense amounts of decorations, but a venue with organic scenery or a beautiful view can help alleviate the stress. Consider having the ceremony near a garden or beach with enough natural surroundings to keep guests in awe. • Make the cake a centerpiece. Wedding cakes are almost guaranteed to be filled with flavor, but they can also serve as a decorative centerpiece for the reception. Choosing a cake topped with flowers, highlighting bright colors and placing it in a prominent spot at the reception can grab guests' attention while also keeping them eager for a bite. • Choose table accessories that pop. Leave guests in amazement as they make their way to their seats for the reception with beautifully decorated tables. Table accessories can be anything ranging from patterned table runners to flowers in full-bloom placed in simple, elegant vases. If you are not having a formal sit-down reception, try using paper lanterns or hanging flowers from the ceiling to create an eye-catch-

14 • Panorama Community Magazine: January 2020

ing atmosphere to remember. • Add classic lighting. At times, finding the right lighting to match the mood of a wedding venue can be tricky. In this case, less may actually be more. Try opting for a classic candlelit ceremony or reception to create a more romantic setting. This can save both money and countless hours spent attempting to configure elaborate light fixtures, and also provide a timeless feel. • Place engagement photos around the venue. With any wedding, you want the day to feel personal and intimate for the couple and guests alike. Consider decorating the venue with engagement photos of the soon-to-be spouses as they popped the question. This can allow the newlyweds to reminisce while guests view those cherished moments and revel in the occasion. Five Ways To Support Shelter Animals If You're Not Ready To Adopt (BPT) - The winter months, which are often considered some of the busiest for animal shelters, are approaching. According to the ASPCA, approximately 6.5 million companion animals enter shelters every year. Adding a shelter pet to your family can be fulfilling, but what if you're not ready or able to adopt? Hartz Loving Paws is committed to supporting companion animals in shelters through product donations and volunteer events. Hartz is partnering with the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area in Texas to share opportunities for you to give back to pets in need if you're not ready or able to adopt. 1. Donate money or product. Many animal shelters and rescue organizations have direct donation links posted on their websites. Monetary donations go toward pet food, medical attention and vaccines for the animals. Animal shelters and rescue organizations also often create Amazon wish lists with desired products. Shelters typically ask for pet treats, toys and grooming supplies. Sarah Hammond, executive director of the Humane Society of the New Braunfels Area in Texas, said she is grateful for donations from Hartz Loving Paws, which has given more than $2 million worth of product to shelters and organizations, including her own, since its inception in 2016. 2. Provide a temporary home. An increased number of animals placed in shelters need foster care before they are ready to find their forever homes. Foster needs range from postop surgical care to puppy growth care and medical support. Food, medication and other

supplies are typically provided when fostering, and the length of time a foster pet may stay in your home varies depending on the animal's needs. Contact your local shelter to fill out an application. Once approved, your local shelter will work closely with you to find the right foster pet for your household. 3. Volunteer at your local shelter or rescue organization. Animal shelters and rescue organizations offer numerous volunteer roles, such as dog walkers, adoption support and training support. Many positions don't require prior experience and can be applied for on your local shelter or rescue organization's website. Volunteer positions vary in expectations and demand, so there is a position for everyone. You can also volunteer to participate in a shelter rebuild project. Hartz Loving Paws renovates shelters twice a year in partnership with GreaterGood.org's Rescue Rebuild program. These teams work with shelters to create playful and welcoming environments for animals. 4. Take photos of adoptable pets. Help animals find homes sooner by taking adoption photos for local shelters. Many people search for adoptable pets online, and with a great profile picture, animals have a greater chance at being adopted. If you're new to photography, there are free training videos available on the One Picture Saves a Life website that show how to take better photos of shelter

pets. 5. Become an advocate. Follow animal shelters and rescue organizations on social media and reshare their content. Talk to your family and friends about the importance of caring for shelter pets while they await their forever homes and share how they can help.

Travel Trends To Inspire Your 2020 Vacation Planning (NAPS)—Some things never change when it comes to traveling with friends and family, but every year new trends arise as travelers discover new places and ways to travel. With data and insights from its global vacation rental marketplace, Vrbo identified where, how and why Americans will travel for vacation in 2020. Up-and-coming destinations Travelers are always looking for “off-thebeaten path” or “hidden gem” destinations for their next trip. The top emerging domestic destinations all have one thing in common: the great outdoors. From ghost towns to sea islands, adventurous travelers are visiting places like Big Bend National Park, Olympic National Park and Chattahoochee National Forest. “This is the third year in a row travelers’ desire to be outdoors has filled the up-andcoming destinations list,” said Vrbo Travel Expert Melanie Fish. “Clearly, people want the comforts of a home away from home while soaking in scenery.”

Hot spots for vacations these days include the beaches of Portugal—and outdoor destinations like Big Bend National Park.

to the beach in 2020? Portugal. The country took three of the top five spots on Vrbo’s list of international beach destinations: Vila Nova de Gaia, Porto and Lisbon. Portugal is known for its affordability and for some of the best waves in Europe. Other destinations include Chania, Greece and Catania, Italy.

Drivable destinations: moving up More Americans are taking short-stay vacations of two or three days—likely an outgrowth of flexible time-off policies and prioritization of experiences with people over material goods. Whether it’s a long weekend or a day trip, an exceptional vacation destination is less than a tank of gas away! In fact, Vrbo’s top five short-stay destinations are all less than 300 miles away from the top origin markets that guests were traveling from. From urban getaways to nature escapes, travelers are taking short trips to these top destinations: St. Louis; McCurtain County (Broken Bow), Okla.; Newton County, Ark.; Grays Harbor County, Wash. and Ruidoso, New Mexico. Hottest international beach Want more travel inspiration? See more destinations trends and find your vacation rental match at Where are trendsetting travelers heading https://www.vrbo.com/l/trend-report/.

On the rise: same-city stays Same-city stays refer to people booking vacation rentals in their own city—not to be confused with staycations, which involve staying at your own home. The top single place that Chicago Vrbo renters come from is Chicago, and that rings true for a number of major American cities, including Philadelphia, Dallas and Atlanta. Another emerging travel phenomenon may come into play: celecations, when families and friends gather to celebrate special occasions. People who live in town may rent a vacation home to host and comfortably accommodate groups of guests for a holiday or a milestone life event.

Reading books individually then coming together to discuss them, similar to a book club, can provide the chance for thoughtful talks about difficult topics. 11th Anniversary Edition by Rich Lipinski

As we enter 2020, it is hard to believe that Hard Coal Baseball will be celebrating its 11th anniversary. During that time Hard Coal Baseball has visited the history of our area through the players, venues, and culturally significant events surrounding the rich history of baseball in Northeast and Central Pennsylvania. We have taken time to honor the achievements of local players, grieved the losses of local icons, met local authors, had some fun with the Philly Phanatic, and discussed the best ballpark eats up and down the eastern seaboard. "America has rolled by like an army of steamrollers. It has been erased like a blackboard, rebuilt and erased again. But baseball has marked the time.” —Field of Dreams Over the course of eleven years I have received many e-mails and comments about the subjects discussed. On a few occasions I have been asked, “Why baseball? It’s only a sport, which is very true and very important. Societies are measured by their achievements, milestones, actions (both good and bad), and eras that have marked time. More recently the term soundtrack of your life has become an individual’s way to mark time. America is a very young nation (so young in fact, that there are actual photographs of Revolutionary War Veterans), a nation with two distinct periods-pre and post-civil war. There are reports of town ball and the game of “base” dating back to the early 1700’s. As America was forming, devising, and refining its own rules, so was the game of baseball. In the 1850’s, as America was debating and heading to full blown war to help fulfill the promise of its rules, baseball was becoming the sport we recognize today. During the Civil War, baseball was spread through union

camps and shared with prisoners of war. The last 150 years is where America and baseball become intertwined. The amazingly fast societal and technological changes have literally left the country unrecognizable to a person from 1865, except for baseball. Baseball has marked the time, given a common language from generation to generation. More importantly, baseball has mirrored and, in some cases, led charge and shown a glimpse of the future. Over the years it has dealt with a myriad of issues that would appear a few years later in society as a whole. Baseball has dealt with labor issues, discrimination, and religion, monopolistic practices, gambling scandals, drug scandals, wars, and depression. Hundreds of books have been written about each of those subjects, and I would like to highlight a few that have been discussed within this column. Immigration and Integration One of my favorite interviews for Hard Coal was with, Dr William Kashatus, who wrote “Diamonds in The Coalfields”. In his book, Kashatus wrote extensively about the immigration population and how baseball was common ground among the diverse European immigrant populations of the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. The similarities described in the book and events of today are astounding.

our very own version of the movie “League of Their Own” (which she had a part in). In 2016 we were able to interview the producers of documentary about these groundbreaking women. Heading into 2020 there are fewer than 85 of these trailblazers left among us. Discrimination Baseball was not immune from the discrimination of “separate but equal” society after the civil war. It was one of the first organizations to break the barrier in 1947 with Jackie Robinson. Hard Coal interviewed Paul Brown of Carbondale who wrote, “The Coal Baron played the Cuban Giants”. Hard Coal covered the history of Bowman Filed in Williamsport, which was home to the Negro League Williamsport Grays. In 1950 Lorenzo “Piper” Davis broke the local color barrier, by playing for the Scranton Red Sox. In 1952 future Hall of famer Leon Day would appear in Scranton. The Boston Red Sox would not integrate until 1959.

Both Men And Women Resolve To Tackle Disorganization In 2020 (NAPS)—If you’re ever determined to finally streamline your office “to do’s” and make a dent in your inbox, or committed to finding a way to keep the kids’ toys out of the way of unwary feet, you’re not alone. A recent national survey of more than 1,200 individuals conducted by the National Association of Productivity and Organizing Professionals (NAPO) for its annual Get Organized & Be Productive campaign revealed that a full 31 percent of respondents are putting “getting organized” on their list of New Year’s resolutions. While the data shows both genders on board with this idea, it also showed that for women, the ramifications may be more significant. GO Month evolved as recognition that many view the fresh start implied by a new year as the time to finally tackle the disorganization in their lives—at home and on the job. they feel disorganized, they find it hard to concentrate on current projects, more female respondents reported feeling stressed from feeling out of control of their environment than did men. Specifically: • Thirty-six percent of women said that looking at how organized or disorganized their home is, they feel stressed or completely stressed compared to only 22 percent of men • More than half of women respondents (53.7 percent) report disorganization leaves them unable to concentrate on the work at hand, vs only 45 percent of men. • 35.5 percent of women vs 22 percent of men wished at some time for someone to come in and organize their home. Monroy’s advice to help streamline one’s environment? “Don’t wait until you feel out of control to tackle the stressors in your life. Having a professional organizer or productivity expert to help look at things with fresh eyes can encourage new day-to-day behaviors to create the needed change, whether you are a man or a woman.” For further facts and tips, visit www.napo.net.

4 Steps To Financial Fitness In The New Year (BPT) - Sponsored ad content from Vanderbilt Mortgage and Finance, Inc. The new year is just around the corner and it's never too early to think about your 2020 goals - and for many, this means prioritizing finances. Taking the time to focus on your goals and determine what's important to you financially is the best way to set yourself up for success, but actually following through can be difficult. These easy financial exercises from Vanderbilt Mortgage will help you reach your goals in the new decade. 1. Outline your plan. If you don't already have one, establish your plan. Write down short-term financial goals, such as creating a monthly budget, and long-term goals, such as paying off a debt or buying a home. Defining these goals will help as you set your budget for the next year. 2. Create a monthly budget. Gather pay statements, bills and bank statements to get started. You can write down all this information or use a budget tool. Start by calculating your monthly income, which includes not only the amount

you may get from a regular paycheck, but also any money you get in government aid, child support or pensions. The next step is to look at your bills and bank statements to find out exactly what you spend in various categories of expenses such as utilities, auto, medical, personal, insurance, etc. This accurate information will empower you to take control of your spending. 3. Set a savings goal. Saving is another important aspect of financial health. Whether you're using a general savings account, adding to an emergency fund, or setting aside funds for a new home, saving for larger financial goals helps you prepare and gives you peace of mind no matter where life takes you. If you're new to saving, start small. Simply skipping your daily latte from the coffee shop a few times a week can add up quickly. 4. Stick to it. The statistics on how many people actually follow through and keep their New Year's resolutions are rather bleak, but sticking with your financial goals will pay off. Stay on track by monitoring your progress each week. As you get closer to your goals, excitement will

When finished, garnish with chopped chives. 4. Prepare a phenomenal dinner (with left-

overs for lunch): Try this recipe: Taco-Stuffed Spaghetti Squash Ingredients: 2 lb. spaghetti squash 2 Tablespoons Lindsay Extra Virgin Olive Oil, separated 1 cup diced red onion 3 cloves garlic 1 lb. ground chicken 1 - 14 oz. can diced tomatoes 1 teaspoon cumin 2 teaspoon chili powder 1 teaspoon salt 1 - 2.25 oz. can Lindsay California Black Sliced Olives 1 lime 1 1/2 cup Monterey jack cheese 1 avocado, diced 1 large tomato, diced 1 jalapeño, sliced 1/2 cup Lindsay California Black Medium Olives 1 lime, wedged Directions: Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Place whole squash into microwave and cook for 3 minutes. This makes it easier to cut in half. When done, cut in half and scrape out the seeds. Drizzle 1 teaspoon oil over each half and rub it around until the whole inside is coated. Sprinkle with salt and pepper. Then place squash halves on a parchment-lined baking sheet center down, so it lays flat. Bake for 50

minutes. Meanwhile, dice onion and mince the jalapeño and garlic. Heat a large sauté pan over medium-high heat. Pour 2 teaspoons of oil into the pan, then add the chicken, 3/4 cup onion and garlic. Cook until chicken is cooked through. Add tomatoes, cumin, chili powder and salt to chicken mixture. Stir to combine, bringing mixture to a boil. Cook uncovered for 15 minutes to reduce the liquid, stirring occasionally. Remove from heat. Stir in the olives and juice from the lime. When the squash is done, scrape the inside with a fork to release from edge, creating a little nest in each half. Put ¼ of the chicken mixture in each half. Put ¼ cup cheese over the top of each half, then place back into the oven for 5 minutes or until cheese is melted. Top with sliced avocado, diced tomatoes, onions, jalapeño, whole olives and a lime wedge. Learn More For other facts, tips and delicious recipes, go to www.ilovelindsay.com/recipes. 6 Tips For Adding More Seafood To Your Family's Menu (Family Features) Seafood can make for a healthy addition to diets, particularly for children. It improves body and brain function, and studies conducted by "Pediatrics" and the "American Journal of Clinical Nutrition" have linked seafood to reduced risks of heart disease and allergic conditions like asthma. In fact, the United States Department of Agriculture suggests making seafood part of healthy diets and its 2015-2020 Dietary Guidelines for Americans recommend putting it on menus at least twice a week. While there are common complaints, such as "my kids won't like it" or "I don't know how to prepare it," these tips can help make it quick, easy and affordable to add nutritious seafood to your family's menu. • Start with shrimp. Shrimp is one of the most popular types of seafood in the United States. Try shrimp warm or cold as a snack, appetizer or main course. It's versatile and can be sauteed, broiled, boiled, grilled or baked. • Make it fun. Consider putting healthy fish like wild cod, salmon or pollock into fun foods like tacos or burgers. • Buy frozen. Fish is now flash frozen at sea to lock in freshness. Frozen seafood meals add convenience and help cut down on waste because what you don't use can go back in the freezer. • Cook with your kids. If your kids don't think they like seafood, have them help with dinner. Cooking with kids can help develop healthier long-term habits and a more adventurous palate. It also helps improve motor functions and confidence. In fact, a study published in "Pediatrics" shows getting children involved in meal preparation may increase their enjoyment of healthy foods. • Pick the right products. To create a familyfriendly menu, consider an option like Aqua Star's Cutting Board meal kits, a selection of 10 recipes that include everything a family needs to prepare a tasty, healthy meal. Selections include tacos, flatbreads and comfort favorites. With pre-portioned ingredients for quick preparation and cleanup, they make it easy for parents and kids to create their own restaurant-quality meals. • Eat at home. Eating out often can drive unhealthy eating habits and strain family budgets. Seafood is easy and convenient to make, whether you use a simple recipe like these Chipotle Shrimp Street Tacos or choose a convenient meal kit, and can help you spend

Show Your Heart Some Love With Walnuts (Family Features) While heart disease is a leading cause of death for both men and women in the United States, many of the risk factors associated with the condition can be controlled with dietary and lifestyle changes. By centering your meals around better-foryou ingredients and recipes, you can show your heart some extra love. Consider walnuts, which are a heart-healthy food certified by the American Heart Association. More than 25 years of research shows walnuts may play a key role in heart health. In fact, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration approved one of the first qualified health claims for a whole food, finding that eating 1 1/2 ounces of walnuts per day as part of a lowsaturated fat and low-cholesterol diet while not increasing caloric intake may reduce the risk of coronary heart disease. Additionally, walnuts are the only nut significantly high in omega-3s, with 2 1/2 grams of alpha-linolenic acid per ounce. Walnuts can add this essential nutrient to dishes like these

Spice Up Your Life With Easy-To-Enjoy Jambalaya (NAPS)—For a fast, easy and delicious one-pot meal, few dishes can beat a jambalaya. Created by the unique blend of cultures that make up New Orleans cuisine, jambalaya is both satisfying and simple to make using whatever you happen to have on hand (thus excellent for that “end-of-week-cleanout-the-fridge-meal”). Known for its bold flavor and versatility, there’s no wrong way to make this crowd-pleaser. “Jambalaya is a one-pot meal that combines elements of our French, Spanish, African and Acadian heritage,” explains New Orleans culinary authority and cookbook author Poppy Tooker. “Every jambalaya starts with what is often called the ‘trinity’ of seasoning vegetables—celery, onion and bell pepper—and, of course, rice and signature spices. Where you go from there is really up to you. Add seafood, smoked sausage, chicken or whatever you have on hand.” Try this recipe for Classic Jambalaya:

MASTER GARDENER: Caring For Holiday Plants by Mary Ann Miller, Master Gardener Colorful plants such as poinsettia, Christmas cactus, amar yllis, and cyclamen add special beauty to our homes during the holiday season. But if you are houseplant-challenged as I am, January raises the question, “So what do I do with it now?” Christmas (or Thanksgiving) cactus is one plant which is easy to grow. I have one that has faithfully bloomed for 20 years. Holiday cactus should be planted in well-drained potting medium, such as commercial mixes for succulents or a combination of two parts potting soil and one part sand or vermiculite. If the soil retains too much moisture, the plant may suffer from root rot. The cactus should be watered thoroughly when the top inch of soil feels dry to the touch and then allowed to dry before watering again. Avoid letting the soil get too dry, or leaves may wrinkle and flower buds may drop. Holiday cactus prefers cooler temperatures than most cacti – about 70° during the day 60° to 65° at night. It benefits from a houseplant fertilizer while actively growing. Pruning after bloom by pinching or cutting off a few sections of each stem encourages the plant to branch out. You can propagate more plants by rooting the pruned segments in moist vermiculite.

I have also rooted them successfully in water. Holiday cactus will re-bloom for future holiday seasons if you provide it with the proper light and temperature conditions. A period of long nights of uninterrupted darkness is recommended to produce flowers. Other holiday plants are a bit more challenging, but even I have been able to keep poinsettia as an attractive houseplant through spring. It thrives at a temperature of 65° to 70° during the daytime, but tolerates 60° at night. To maintain bloom, keep it in a draft-free location. If possible, place the plant near a window that faces south so that it will have adequate light. Check the soil daily for moisture. When dry to the touch, water the plant until the water runs out of the drainage hole, but discard any water that accumulates in a saucer holding the pot. Avoid letting the plant wilt, which will cause early loss of leaves. If wilting occurs, water the poinsettia immediately, and then five minutes later water it again to assist its recovery. After all danger of frost in the spring, I plant poinsettia outdoors in a shady location and enjoy its lovely foliage throughout the warmer months. Since poinsettia is relatively inexpensive and rather difficult to get to re-bloom, I just let it die when cold weather arrives.

Amaryllis is a colorful flower, which can be retained through the year and encouraged to re-bloom for the next holiday season. After the plant has finished blooming, the flower stalk should be cut off. Large leaves will grow, and the plant should be cared for as a houseplant until nighttime spring temperatures are above 55°, when you can plant the amaryllis in the garden or an outside container for the warm months. Keep it well-watered and fertilize every other week with a balanced fertilizer. After a hard frost, dig up the bulb and store it in a cool dry location to give it the required dormancy to reflower. When a flower spike begins to appear, re-pot it and begin watering regularly. Soon after, you will again have an attractive holiday plant. Cyclamen is very challenging for me. I love its beautiful flowers and foliage, but it has failed spectacularly under my care. Hopefully others will be more successful. It does not like heat at all, preferring quite cool temperatures (about 50° at WE ARE YOUR LOCAL SUPPLIER FOR ALL night), though it also likes plenty of indirect sun. Water only when the soil is dry to the touch; over-watering is lethal to cyclamen. It is best to immerse the container into tepid water to avoid getting the crown wet, removing it when the top of the soil appears wet. Don’t be alarmed when the plant appears to be dying as the warm weather arrives – it is entering a period of semi-dormancy. Cut back on water and cease fertilizing, but continue to provide it with plenty of indirect sunlight. When the cool weather of fall arrives, cyclamen perks up again and begins to produce flowers. Cyclamen is a great plant for winter color, ideally blooming from October to March. For further information about caring for holiday plants, call the Luzerne County Extension at 1-888-825-1701 or download a Factsheet at the following website: http://pubs.cas. psu.edu/FreePubs/pdfs/xj0009.pdf

Choose The Protection That’s Right For Your Home And Family by The Experts at S.J. Kowalski The last decade has seen a revolution in the heating and cooling industry. New systems use up to 50% less energy. Plus, today’s homes are constructed tighter than ever, trapping stale indoor air and pollutants. The EPA reports that indoor air quality can be 100 times worse than outside air. Airborne pollutants may include: • Dust, pollen, dirt, dander, carpet and insulation fiber. • Mold spores, dust mites, viruses, fungi, bacteria, yeasts and algae, gases, vapors and odors from appliances, furniture glues and finishes, carpeting, cleaning products, pesticides, perfumes, pets and more. Too little humidity can cause sore throat, dry skin and sinus irritation and can cause damage to furniture and wood floors. Makes you feel colder regardless of temperature. Too much humidity makes you feel clammy, sweaty or sticky, increases allergens (dust mites, molds and fungi), causes wood warping and wallpaper peeling. Today’s indoor air quality systems must include temperature control, humidity control, filtration and ventilation. Regardless of the age of your system, or if you use portables, updating to whole-home solutions saves you time, trouble and energy costs and provides a cleaner, healthier home. We have listed ten simple things you can do to improve the indoor air quality of your home. • Store volatile chemicals and cleaning products outside the home.

Little Village Pizza SEE OUR AD ON THE BACK PAGE

• Keep pet beds and litter boxes away from heating and cooling system vents. • Run your heating or cooling system blower when vacuuming. • Keep vents unobstructed by furniture to keep airborne particulates from settling. • Change your furnace filter according to the manufacturer’s recommendations. • Always run your bathroom fan during and after showering. • Run your heating and cooling system blower to reduce condensation on windows. • Use oven hood fans when boiling, poaching or baking foods. • Run your heating or cooling system blower constantly to reduce hot or cold spots. • Use ceiling fans to help increase circulation (with blades circulating air upward in winter and downward in summer) Air purifiers provide protection against adverse health effects from indoor air pollution.

They can remove up to 99.97% of harmful particulates found everyday in your unventilated home, work and school spaces, keeping the lungs safe. You will vacuum less often. Air purifiers remove most common allergens. They remove pet and cooking odors and 99% of asthma triggers. Find the best clean air solutions for your home or business by calling 570-455-2600. Let the experts at S.J. Kowalski, Inc. recommend and install the right Indoor Air Quality System to make your home a safe, comfortable environment. Whether you require a whole home filtration system to remove impurities-down to those so small you can’t even see them or you need a ventilation control product to automatically replace stale indoor air with fresh outdoor air or whole house dehumidifiers and humidifiers we can recommend the right fit for your home or business. Warm, Cozy And Eco-Friendly Home Improvements For Winter (Family Features) Blustery winds raging outdoors may leave you struggling to find a balance between making sure your family stays warm and maintaining an earth-friendly home. Keeping your home cozy and honoring your sustainable sensibilities can actually go hand-in-hand. Making green upgrades to your home can add value, too. These sustainable home improvements can go a long way toward boosting your comfort, so you have an inviting oasis to linger where you're well protected from the elements. • Carpeted Floors—The sleek, clean look of wood or tile flooring is in high demand for many homeowners. However, carpet can actually provide help with climate control that goes beyond a softer, warmer surface for your bare feet to tread. Carpet can act as an insulator and help keep a room warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. If carpeted flooring isn't consistent with your style or budget, consider adding substantial area rugs to rooms that could use some extra warmth. • Energy-Efficient Heating Systems—An efficient option like Mitsubishi Electric's Zoned Comfort Solutions uses energy smartly by actively heating specific areas of your home where you need it. The system monitors the conditions in each room and adjusts automatically to maintain the desired temperatures. The system's ductless indoor units offer reusable, long-life, washable filters to improve your indoor air quality while mini-

mizing impact on landfills. Plus, advanced filters on some models offer enhanced odor control to help ensure fresher air during winter months when air tends to stagnate inside due to closed windows and doors. • Ceiling Fan Adjustment—You may naturally turn off your ceiling fans when winter arrives, but the same fans that provide refreshing cool air in the summer can actually help keep your room warm, too. Simply switching the fans to run clockwise helps draw warm air upward and distribute it throughout the home. This little circulation-boosting move can reduce your energy bill by as much as 10%. • Tankless Water Heaters—Make leaving the warmth of your bed each morning more appealing with the assurance of a steaming hot shower that doesn't needlessly burden the environment. Traditional water heaters run a continuous power cycle to maintain a tank full of hot water, regardless if you're using it or not. However, a tankless version heats what you need when you need it. It's important to ensure your tankless unit is sized with the proper gallons-per-minute rating to handle demand for multiple simultaneous uses, like a load of laundry and a shower at the same time. • Smart Controls—The wide range of smartenabled home products, appliances and entertainment devices make life more convenient and enjoyable, but they can also play a role in managing your environmental footprint. Helpful tools, like Mitsubishi Electric's kumo cloud mobile app, ensure you're not wasting energy to perform functions when you're not even home. These programs allow you to schedule your daily routines and even make adjustments remotely when your day

Use Zones to Reduce Energy Heating your home zone-by-zone can be much more energy efficient and serve as a better means of maintaining your home's temperature and comfort level. Consider these benefits: • A zoned system allows you to control each area in your home independently and even turn off ones that are not in use. gets off track. For example, it allows you to program and adjust your heating and cooling system from a smartphone or tablet so you won't come home to a house that's freezing cold. • Better Lighting—Winter isn't just cold; it's often dark and dreary, too. That means you're more likely to rely on energy to illuminate your home, especially since an alternative like throwing open the curtains to let in natural light can have the unintended consequence of allowing cold air to seep in. You can curb your energy reliance and the impact on your energy bills by swapping out your bulbs for light emitting diode lights, compact fluorescent lamps or energy-saving LED lights, which can reduce your energy needs by up to 80%. 5 Tips To Refresh Your Home In The New Year (Family Features) Each new year gives you the chance to reset and start new routines. When you're considering new approaches to healthy living - whether eliminating or adding habits to improve your daily life - beginning with your home is an optimal choice. Your living environment has a strong influence on your life, and it's worth evaluating how you can make updates that create a positive space for you and all that the new year will bring. Consider these ideas to refresh your home and simplify your housecleaning routine so you can spend more time focusing on your goals this year. • Start by Decluttering—It's practically impossible to get excited about a fresh start when you're surrounding by last year's junk. Make decluttering and purging unnecessary items a top priority for your refresh. Clear counters and tables to create more inviting surfaces and force yourself to assess which items are worth keeping. Get rid of items you don't need by donating, selling or disposing them. Tackle piles of things you've carelessly tossed aside and find (or create) purposeful places for them to belong. • Simplify Your Laundry Routine—Whether it's the frustration of having no clean laundry or never-ending baskets filled with clothes that need folding, laundry is an area where nearly every home can use a refresh. Start with the basics to make laundry easy and quick. A streamlined laundry system starts with the right tools for the job, such as all Mighty Pacs, which are available in several varieties with different benefits and contain single doses of detergent that

release while inside your machine, so you can simply toss one in and start the load. If you have sensitive skin, try all Free Clear, the No. 1 recommended detergent brand by dermatologists, allergists and pediatricians for sensitive skin. It's gentle and works through tough stains fast. • Create a Fitness Space—One way to stay committed to a new workout regimen is to create a place where you enjoy spending time. Even if you don't have a room to dedicate to fitness, you can make a fitness corner feel more intentional and less like an afterthought with some simple changes. If possible, locate your fitness area near a window so you can soak up the energy of natural light. Clear away unnecessary items and make room for the equipment or floor space you need. Add inspiring posters or make frames to hold your current workout guide. Add storage for hand weights, resistance bands and other small equipment to create your own home gym. • Reconfigure Your Furniture—A full-fledged renovation may not be in the cards (or budget),

but you can give your living space a quick facelift by simply rearranging the furniture. Beyond simple aesthetic changes, think about how you can make better use of natural light and improve traffic patterns. You might also eliminate extra pieces if the space feels overcrowded or consider borrowing functional items that add storage or seating from other rooms in the house. • Add Greenery—The middle of winter may not seem like an ideal time to hone your green thumb, but adding a few plants can make your home feel more inviting and chase away the cold weather blues. Plants can also help serve as a natural air purifying system; they absorb carbon dioxide to help stimulate their growth and are believed to absorb a host of other airborne pollutants. (NAPS)—When it comes to winter car care, many motorists tend to think of antifreeze and batteries but vehicles need extra attention in winter, especially when the temperatures drop. “Making sure your vehicle is properly prepared for all of winter’s elements will help you avoid the aggravation of an unplanned road emergency,” says Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. The non-profit Car Care Council offers six quick tips to help your vehicle perform at its best during cold weather months: 1. Keep the gas tank at least half full; this decreases the chance of moisture forming in the gas lines and possibly freezing. 2. Check the tire pressure, including the spare, as tires can lose pressure when temperatures drop. Consider special tires if snow and ice are a problem in your area. 3. Have the exhaust system checked for carbon monoxide leaks, which can be especially dangerous during cold weather driving when windows are closed. 4. Allow your car a little more time to warm up when temperatures are below freezing, so that the oil in the engine and transmission circulate and get warm.

36 • Panorama Community Magazine: January 2020

5. Change to low-viscosity oil in winter as it will flow more easily between moving parts when it is cold. Drivers in sub-zero temperatures should drop their oil weight from 10W30 to 5-W30, as thickened oil can make it hard to start the car. 6. Consider using cold weather washer fluid and special winter windshield blades if you live in a place with especially harsh winter conditions. Drivers should also stock an emergency kit with an ice scraper and snowbrush, jumper cables, flashlight, blanket, extra clothes, bottled water, dry food snacks and needed medication. In addition, the Car Care Council recommends a thorough vehicle inspection by a trusted professional service technician, as winter magnifies existing problems such as pings, hard starts, sluggish performance or rough idling. The Car Care Council is the source of information for the “Be Car Care Aware” consumer education campaign promoting the benefits of regular vehicle care, maintenance and repair to consumers. To order a free copy of the popular Car Care Guide, visit the council’s consumer education website at www.carcare.org.

The Importance of Wheel Alignment by Thomas R. Buff Shake and shimmy, weave and drift. Sounds like fun if you are at an amusement park. But these terms are also common to what it feels like if your vehicle has steering or suspension problems that are affecting your cars wheel alignment. Not fun and certainly not safe. The meaning of the term “wheel alignment” can be misleading. Rather than referring only to your vehicles wheels, wheel alignment, which is sometimes called tracking, is also related to the suspension and its components. Wheel alignment is all about angles and steering geometry. When the angles are incorrect from worn parts or other causes the angles will change and in turn cause drivability and tire wear problems.

• The vehicle wanders or drifts to either side. • A shake or shimmy after hitting a bump. If your vehicle is doing any or all of the above, it can be from a variety of causes. The main causes of these symptoms are: • Worn parts caused by wear and tear. Steering and suspension parts such as tie rods, ball joints, struts or shocks just to name a few, will cause the front and/or rear alignment geometry to be incorrect. This can create a dangerous and unsafe condition. • Hitting a pothole. This is a very common reason for alignment problems. If parts become bent or shifted due to a sudden impact, the steering geometry will be out of whack. Potholes and curbs are known for bending and twisting What are the symptoms of suspension, tire and steering components. misalignment or improper tracking? • Changes in ride height. Any change caused • Tires that wear unevenly or on one side. by worn shocks or struts will cause the vehicle to • A crooked steering wheel sag. This will change the height of the vehicle. • A vibration from the steering wheel or front In turn the wheels will be forced to change their end. position thus altering the steering geometry. • The steering wheel does not return easily after Now we know the most common sympa turn toms and causes of improper wheel alignment.

So why is wheel alignment so important? First of all and most important is the safety factors. Proper wheel alignment creates improved steering and handling. Improper steering angles will create a variety of symptoms mentioned earlier that will have your car weaving all over the road. All four wheels must be aligned properly, if not it will cause unsafe driving conditions. Misaligned wheels will also cause a greater resistance on the road. This will decrease your fuel economy. Studies have shown that a four wheel alignment can increase your fuel mileage by 20 percent. Irregular tire wear can also lead to accidents caused by blowouts that can cause accidents. Prevention is the key. If your car is displaying any of the symptoms described, you need a four wheel alignment performed by a certified technician. The cost for an alignment is far less than a set of tires. But more importantly, a proper wheel alignment will keep your car on the road where it belongs. Happy New Year to all! Stay safe and Happy Motoring!

You Are What You Think! by John Degenhart, DC I remember the saying “you are what you eat”. I think it is very important that we get away from sugar, salt, and white flour. That eating more vegetables and drinking lots of water is good for us. I think moderate exercise, moderate sleep, and even moderation in work, is all important. But after observing human nature and in my readings, the mind is the most powerful area we need to discipline. What good is it to the health of the patient if they eat right yet give in to temptation and make bad decisions where they lose their job or their family? What good is it if someone is a marathon runner but they are so selfish to their own goals that they are blind to the needs of their loved ones? The scriptures are full of advice to guard your mind, and to eventually have “the mind

of Christ”. Think of that. If all that you looked at, you had the eyes of Jesus full of love, no jealously, all forgiving. Or you had the heart of Jesus showing compassion even to those who hurt you. Life should be a constant process of you trying to think as God would. In your actions towards others but most importantly in your thoughts. To turn off the TV when you see violence or anything that deep inside troubles your value system. To get the youth not to play such violent video games. To read less negativity in the newspaper. To think of “that which is beautiful, that which is kind, that which is lovely”. I admire people who are so disciplined to

go to the gym for 20-30 years to sculpt their bodies to being so fit. But it is far more profitable for them to discipline their minds towards godliness. So for your New Year’s resolution, the best I have to offer you is that you are what you think. As soon as you thing of a bad or negative thought, discipline your mind to turn the channel. Don’t entertain any bad thoughts. Think of ways you could be nice to your family and coworkers. Your face will lighten up, your heart will dispel anxiety with joy, and you will transform your mind as the years go by. It all starts, one day at a time. Have a beautiful New Year by keeping your thoughts beautiful!

Hazleton Area School District Names Lehigh Valley Health Network District Sports Medicine Partner by Nina Ace, Lehigh Valley Health Network There’s nothing quite like the energy of a high school sports event. Whether you’re spending Friday night under bright stadium lights or part of the booming echo of a packed gymnasium, watching local athletes play their hearts out is downright exhilarating. But when one of those athletes gets injured doing what they love, it’s devastating. That’s why Hazleton Area School District (HASD) is partnering with Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) to keep their student athletes healthy. Scholastic athlete care LVHN’s organized sports medicine program ensures HASD student athletes are well prepared for activities, properly and efficiently treated for injuries and can return to play safely and quickly. These services apply to all senior high school and middle school sports (boys and girls) that are played on an interscholastic basis.

“Because our student athletes are so important to us, we wanted a partner who would provide first class medical treatment, injury prevention and strength conditioning among other services,” says Brian T. Uplinger, Superintendent of Schools, Hazleton Area School District. Trainers, concussion testing, education LVHN’s sports medicine program includes a full suite of services, including certified athletic trainers at practices and home games, concussion ImPACT baseline and post injury testing and educational sessions through Weller Health Education Center to encourage life-long healthy habits. LVHN also designates a sports medicinetrained physician as HASD’s team physician and provides a dedicated care coordinator to assist athletes and parents.

HASD health partner HASD is one of the largest school districts in Pennsylvania with 13 schools, including STEM. The athletic program consists of 28 sports with over 1400 student athletes. “The real value to HASD and its student athletes is the continuity of services from injury prevention to injury care through to rehabilitation. They will have access to the full resources of LVHN’s orthopedics, sports medicine and rehabilitation services,” says John Fletcher, President, Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton. “Our goal is to keep student athletes healthy and on the field of play, but should they become injured, we will be right there with them to ensure appropriate treatment to get them back to play as soon as possible.” CTA : Whether you’re pro-league bound or a weekend warrior, every athlete needs a health partner. Keeping Seniors Safe In The Bathroom by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers Every 11 seconds, an older adult is treated in the emergency room for injuries resulting from a fall. And, it’s estimated that 80% of these falls happen in the bathroom. Fallrelated injuries can range from minor cuts, scrapes, and bruises to more severe injuries, including broken bones, hip fractures, head contusions, and even spinal cord injury. It’s easy to understand why bathrooms are particularly hazardous for seniors. Bathrooms tend to have slippery surfaces and nothing to grasp in order to prevent falls. As we age, reduced muscle strength and balance can make falls more common, and those with a history of falls have an even greater risk of falling again. In the bathroom, this can occur when stepping into and exiting the tub or shower; when reaching for a

towel bar, sink top, or other objects for balance when walking; and when sitting down and getting up from the toilet. Installing safety features in the bathroom can reduce the risk, and there are many options available:

provide stability for balance and be a resting place for those who can’t stand for long periods of time. A good shower chair has rubber tips on the legs to prevent sliding. Also, installing a hand-held showerhead allows those with balance issues to shower while seated. • Using a bath transfer bench. A bath transfer bench eliminates the problem of stepping in and out of the tub. Users can sit on the bench outside of the tub then slide into the tub, eliminating the need to step over a bathtub wall.

For the shower and tub • Install grab bars or a tension pole. Towel bars are great for holding towels but aren’t built to support weight. Installing slip-resistant grab bars to help support balance when entering and exiting the shower or tub can help. Seniors should choose bars that are color contrasted from the wall for visibility, and ensure they are securely fixed to the studs of For slippery surfaces the wall for adequate support. • Add non-slip mats. For the toilet • Use a raised toilet seat. For seniors that have difficulty lowering themselves down to sit on a low toilet seat and rising to a standing position, a raised toilet seat adds 3-4 inches of height, which reduces squatting. • Install grab bars for standing and sitting. Six Top Wellness Trends To Watch For (NAPSI)—According to the National Institutes of Health, only about 20 percent of your life expectancy is dictated by your genes; the rest depends on your lifestyle. Increasingly, people look to improve the length and quality of their life through certain products and habits. Here's a look at six popular roads to wellness: 1. Back to nature. Dr. Chloe Evans of the Shetland, Scotland National Health Service says getting out into nature can help alleviate conditions ranging from high blood pressure to depression. "The benefits [of nature] are that it is free, easily accessible, allows increased connection with surroundings which hopefully leads to improved physical and mental health for individuals," she says. 2. Personalize nutrition. When it comes to maintaining a healthful weight and well-being, foods that are good or bad for one person may not be for another. Personalized diets can help. 3. Dress for health success. New technologies may let clothes correct your environ-

ment. Engineers from MIT created a "smart" jacket that automatically adjusts itself to suit your body temperature, the outside temperature and your movements. 4. CBD is in. No longer illegal under the Controlled Substances Act, cannabidiol (CBD)—which doesn't induce a psychoactive effect—is increasingly used to target specific ailments. 5. Aromatherapy makes scents. At the Cleveland Clinic's Innovations Lab, researchers came up with plant-based aromatherapeutic solutions to treat specific symptoms, such

as pain, nausea and anxiety. Recent studies of people with knee replacements suggest the right scent can reduce pain and relieve anxiety. 6. Be smart about supplements. "Highquality supplements and vitamins, herbs and homeopathy, and sports nutrition products can be trusted partners in your natural wellness lifestyle," explains Michael Murray, N.D. Dr. Murray is considered one of the world's leading authorities on natural medicine. He has published more than 30 books including "The Textbook of Natural Medicine," used by hundreds of thousands of healthcare professionals the world over. Preventing Cervical Cancer Over 13,000 women (36 a day) were diagnosed with cervical cancer in the United States in 2019, but according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent. The National Cervical Cancer Coalition (NCCC) has named January Cervical Health Awareness Month to encourage women across the country to get screened for cervical cancer and receive the HPV vaccine if they are eligible. Cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, with regular screening tests and follow-up. Two screening tests can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early is the Pap test and the HPV test. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately and the HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause these cell changes. The American Cancer Society (ACS) regularly reviews and updates the cervical cancer screening recommendations when new evidence suggests that a change may be needed.

The latest recommendations are: - All women should begin cervical cancer screening at age 21. - Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should have a Pap test every 3 years. They should not be tested for HPV unless it is needed after an abnormal Pap test result. - Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have both a Pap test and an HPV test every 5 years. This is the preferred approach, but it is also ok to have a Pap test alone every 3 years. - Women over age 65 who have had regular screenings with normal results should not be screened for cervical cancer. Women who have been diagnosed with cervical pre-cancer should continue to be screened. - Women who have had their uterus and cervix removed in a hysterectomy and have no history of cervical cancer or pre-cancer should not be screened. - Women who have had the HPV vaccine should still follow the screening recommendations for their age group. - Women who are at high risk for cervical cancer may need to be screened more often. Women at high risk might include those with HIV infection, organ transplant, or exposure to the drug DES. They should talk with their doctor or nurse. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we treat gynecologic cancers, including cervical cancer, painlessly and non-invasively

with radiation therapy. When cervical cancer is treated with radiation, several types are commonly used. We use external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) to deliver high-energy X-rays to cancer cells, damaging their ability to multiply. Treatments only take about 15 to 30 minutes and side effects are usually minimal. Several factors determine candidacy for radiation therapy treatment including the stage of the cancer, potential side effects, age, and overall health. If you have any questions about cervical cancer, please visit the National Cervical Cancer Coalition at www.nccc-online.org. ORAL HEATH: The New Year’s Resolution You Owe Yourself by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. Well, it’s that time of year again when we all make ourselves promises of resolutions for the upcoming year. Needless to say, who of us hasn’t indulged for the holidays and made diet and exercise our dedicated resolution? Speaking from experience, I’m sure we all know how that turns out despite our best efforts. Why not set some realistic, achievable goals for your own personal oral health? By following a few easily-manageable steps, you stand to achieve and exceed your own expectations. Avoidance of all tobacco products will greatly decrease your chances of oral cancer. Absence of tobacco will also decrease staining and associated bad breath not to mention improve your overall health. I recommend toothbrush replacement every two to three months to assure brushing efficiently. Remember to discard your toothbrush once you have recovered from illnesses like the flu so as to prevent recurrence of your illness. Be more calcium-conscious. Consumption of daily products and calcium-rich foods is crucial to insure bone and tooth health. Additionally caffeine and sugar reduction are recommended. Beverages such as coffee and tea not only stain your teeth but also encourage decay with the use of sugar in them. Establish a proper brushing and flossing regimen. Brushing should be done twice daily both in morning and in the evening.

The action of proper brushing removes plaque and bacteria which coats your teeth and causes decay. If you consume excessive amounts of sugar, more frequent brushing is advised Daily flossing is advised to remove food and germ buildup in between teeth which further leads to tooth decay. The American Heart Association has now linked flossing to prevention of heart disease. It’s hard to believe that routine flossing can save not only your teeth, but your life too! Communications with your dentist concerning any dental issues you may have will solve a problem before it gets to be more involved and expensive as a result. In closing, why not declare a resolution on your oral health? Simple modifications of your daily oral health routine will result in tremendous benefits to your overall health, confidence, and well-being. Should I be of any assistance in making your new found resolutions come true, do not hesitate in contacting me directly at (570)443-9892. Also, feel free to visit our website at www.toothdocpa.com

Why Buying Glasses Online Is A Waste Of Time by James Deom OD MPH FAAO, Hazleton Eye Specialists Ever thought about buying your glasses online? You may have heard that it’s cheaper and offers more selection, or maybe you don’t want to leave the comfort of your home. If these factors play a role in your decision-making, I would like to remind you that glasses are a medical device that must be tailored to each person’s individual face shape and prescription. To debunk the cheaper cost fallacy, it’s important to remember that many people do not utilize their vision insurance plans to their full benefit when purchasing through online retailers. Most insurance companies provide significant amounts of money toward lenses and frames. A flexible spending account (FSA) or health savings account (HSA) can also be used toward glasses coverage. Most online companies do not accept insurance, leaving these dollars wasted. Often times, glasses are cheaper when using one’s insurance versus buying online. Warranties, adjustments, and returns may also be challenging with online retailers creating a hassle if a prescription is made incorrectly or if glasses do not fit comfortably. Furthermore, proper fit is crucial when choosing glasses. Correct size is critical not

only for comfort, but also for accurate vision. If a person is not looking through the center of the lens, this can create visual distortion and discomfort. Anyone who has ever looked for glasses online will have heard of pupillary distance (PD). This is the distance between a person’s eyes, and with proper measurement it determines where the visual center of the lens will be placed within the glasses. Attempting to take your own PD is like trying to cut your own hair-- challenging with questionable results. While an optician can give you this measurement, it is not a standard part of a glasses prescription. It also does not assure that glasses will be made accurately as there are other measurements required when selecting a frame. For example, fitting a bifocal or progressive lens requires a minimum frame size and a well-fitting frame. This also holds true for those with a higher-than-average prescription, as lens material and design matter for both aesthetics and function. Based on previous studies, the likelihood of getting an accurately made prescription from an online retailer is also rare. In approximately 50% of cases, glasses ordered online (if received

at all) contained an inaccurate prescription or had a safety issue. A large safety issue with online lenses is that they may not meet shatter resistance specifications. This poses a greater risk of eye injury, which is especially scary when dealing with young children. The biggest safety issue with ordering glasses online, however, is that one might not have regular eye exams. It can be tempting to fill an older glasses prescription online if vision appears to be unchanged, but this does not mean that the eyes are free of disease. When bypassing the eye doctor, the patient is at risk for having a serious ocular health condition such as glaucoma or macular degeneration go undetected. In summary, buyers should beware when purchasing glasses online. While it may seem appealing to order them from the comfort of one’s own home, an accurate and well fit pair of glasses comes when prescribed and dispensed by an eye care professional and their staff. At Hazleton Eye Specialists, we offer a wide variety of frames, accept most major insurance plans, and have staff ready to help you pick out glasses that meet all your needs.

Five New Year's Resolutions For A Healthier Mouth by John DellaCroce, D.M.D.

We all make new year's resolutions, but many of us are not likely to follow through. Turning over a new leaf in the New Year can be tricky, but finding a way to stick with it is important when that new leaf benefits your health. Whatever your goals might be, it is important to take small steps to achieve them. Consistency is key with any resolution that you make. If you want to take better care when looking after your teeth and gums this year, these five resolutions can keep you diligent: • Schedule a Dental Appointment—If it's been awhile since you've seen a dentist, you are not alone. But booking this appointment is one of the most important things you can do when looking after your teeth. Some conditions – such as sensitivity in the teeth or bleeding gums – are sure signs that it's time to see a dentist. Even if your teeth look and feel fine, enter a reminder in your phone or calendar for January 1 so that you can call your dentist on January 2 for an appointment. To make the process of scheduling visits easier, book your next one before you leave the office. • Commit to Flossing—Brushing your teeth twice a day isn't enough to keep plaque from building up on your teeth, or to completely remove bits of food from your mouth. To take the best care of your teeth, you need to floss too. If you're not in the habit of flossing, the new year is a great time to start. • Cut Back on Sugar—There is a direct link between the amount of sugar a person eats and the amount of tooth decay he has. Cut-

ting back on sugar can cut your risk for tooth decay considerably. The most convenient way to cut back on sugar is to reduce the number of sugary treats you buy. Simple swaps will help you cut back as well: Drink sugar-free seltzer water instead of soda, or chew a piece of sugar-free gum when you have a craving for something sweet. • Kick the Habit—Smoking doubles your risk for gum disease and is linked to a host of other health issues. Pick a date to give up the habit, get rid of all the tobacco products from your home and solicit the support of your friends and family to help you quit. There will be cravings along the way, so it's important to find a healthy activity to engage in when a craving kicks in. Feel free to see

your general practitioner if you struggle to curb the addiction by yourself. • Eat More Mouth-Healthy Foods—When you cut back on sugar, resolve to add more orally healthy foods to your diet to solidify your diet's benefit to your teeth. Dairy products, which are high in calcium, are great for your teeth, as are fibrous foods that call up saliva and scrub away plaque and other food bits. Making your new year's resolutions as easy as possible to stick with will help you keep them. Take things one step at a time, and if you forget to floss one day or eat a big piece of caramel the next, don't give up. Remember that there's always tomorrow!

Make Your Weight Loss Goals A Reality (Family Features) Losing weight is a highly personal journey as a wide range of factors can affect a person's ability to do so. There's no one approach to weight loss; rather, the best approach is the one that fits your life and body best. Get motivated to reach your weight loss goals with these expert tips. • Set realistic goals. Most experts agree you shouldn't lose more than 1-2 pounds per week. More rapid loss may shock your system, and chances are you're depriving your body of important nutrients. More aggressive loss is also less likely to be permanent or sustainable; long-term Did You Know that Massage Therapy Soothes Anxiety and Depression, Improves Sleep, and Boosts Immunity?

results generally come with steady loss over a period of time. • Eat well. Regardless what eating plan you choose, recognize the importance of nutrition in your weight loss program. Weight loss occurs when you burn more calories than you consume, so build your menu around nutrient-rich foods that fill you up. Strive for a well-balanced diet that encompasses all the food groups and, if necessary, discuss your goals with a doctor or nutritionist who can help you identify the best foods to enjoy and those to avoid. • Consider a supplement. If managing cravings or your appetite hinders your weight loss, a supplement may be a good solution. For example, RiduZone is a patented supplement that gives your body more of a substance it already creates called Oleoylethanolamide (OEA). In essence, OEA tells your brain you are full and it's time to

stop eating. Developed and endorsed by Dr. Jay Yepuri, a board-certified gastroenterologist, the supplement is a non-stimulant that may help you feel full faster to reduce caloric intake and boost metabolism to burn stored fat. • Get active. Creating a calorie deficit is necessary to lose weight, and increasing your physical activity helps ensure you're burning calories. However, getting active isn't just about playing the numbers game. Physical activity also promotes overall wellness with numerous physical and mental health benefits, including improving circulation and stimulating feel-good endorphins. • Stay committed. It's easy to fall off your weight loss plan when unexpected circumstances arise. Give yourself a little grace and permission for occasional misses so you stay motivated to get back to your program. That may mean waiting for a cold to pass and doing less strenuous workouts at home or making extra healthy choices at mealtime in advance of an indulgent event. To help make keeping your commitments easier, consider an option like RiduZone to boost your body's natural appetite-curbing power. Find more information to help jump-start your weight management program at TryRiduZone.com. What is OEA? Oleoylethanolamide (OEA) is a metabolite of oleic acid, a naturally produced substance that interacts with appetite-controlling receptors in the small intestine to signal the brain you are full. It also helps boost metabolism. However, as a result of food choices and excess body fat, naturally produced OEA may require supplementation to achieve the desired effect on appetite or body fat. Created to mimic this naturally occurring metabolite, RiduZone is the only weight management supplement that contains OEA as an ingredient. Its production has been reviewed and is accepted as safe by the Food and Drug Administration. • Less fat. A clinical study published in the "Journal of Lipid Research" shows higher blood levels of OEA, which is derived from oleic acidrich olive oil, correlate to lower amounts of body fat. This means weight loss results may be more visible. • Fewer calories. A prominent research study published in the journal "Food & Function" shows higher circulating levels of OEA can result in a significant reduction in calorie intake. Over time, OEA users become satisfied with smaller, healthier-sized portions.

Adulterated Products by Stephen Schleicher, MD. Everyone knows that smoking cigarettes will lead to lung cancer and/ or heart disease. It says so right on the pack. But what dangers lurk elsewhere? Recently the FDA announced that small amounts of the cancer producing chemical NDMA were found in the popular overthe-counter medication generic Zantac (ranitidine). Previously the FDA recalled a high blood pressure medication (valsartan) containing the same substance. How did NDMA end up in these drugs? Shoddy manufacturing from overseas producers of compounds used to formulate these medications. Notably, manufacturers in China were cited. The FDA has advised patients who take these medicines to consider switching to different compounds. A statement released by the FDA in December stated the following: “Consumers may consider alternative treatments that are approved for the same or similar uses as generic Zantac. To date, FDA’s testing has not found NDMA in Pepcid, Tagamet, Nexium, Prevacid, or Prilosec”. And another scare: a woman was rendered comatose from application of a Pond’s skin cream adulterated with mercury. The cream was imported from Mexico. How mercury, a highly toxic substance, ended up in the cream is still under investigation but the manufacturer of Ponds is not at fault as the poisonous compound was added by a third party after production.

Proper Fitting Winter Footwear Choosing the right pair of shoes to wear on a regular basis can help ensure the longterm health of your feet, as well as your entire body. Many people buy Winter Footwear as a temporary solution to cold weather. The same rules that apply for buying regular shoes, apply even more in the winter. The goal of winter shoes is achieving maximum protection against the cold and maximum security when traversing icing or snowy conditions. Cold Weather and uneven surfaces can aggravate pre-existing conditions A Few Guidelines for Purchasing Shoes • Not too small, not too big – Shoes that are too big or too small can cause unwanted rubbing and blisters. Find a shoe that gives your toes room to wiggle, but does not allow your foot to slide around. • Don’t fixate on size – Just because you’re a size 9 in one brand, doesn’t mean every shoe brand will fit the same. Shoe sizes can vary among manufacturers, which is why it’s important to try on every new pair of shoes and make sure they fit well. • Wear the right socks – If you are buying winter shoes, wear the kind of sock you would when you try the shoes on. That way, you’ll get a better idea of how it will fit during the activity you are buying them for. • Don’t worry about breaking shoes in - If a shoe isn’t comfortable to begin with, it’s never going to be.

Proper shoe fit is particularly important if you are diabetic since improper shoe fit can cause blisters and sores that can become serious if not found and treated quickly. Diabetics also have additional problems with cold weather. If you do have diabetes or a foot problem like plantar fasciitis, Achilles tendinitis, or hammer toe, custom orthotics can be used to make your shoe more comfortable.
