from Our Family to Yours There is a lot of uncertainty when it comes to dealing with the Coronavirus pandemic. The State has restricted local businesses in an attempt to slow down the spread of the virus. Not only are businesses worried about the future of their establishments, so are their employees. People are concerned about not knowing what is next. While there is not a whole lot we can do while restrictions are in place, there are a few measures we can take to support our favorite local businesses during these unsettling times. Show your small businesses and local restaurants you care…Shop Local! The Holiday Season is in full swing. It is a time of joy, reflection, hope & shopping. revenue for the holiday season. Shopping local means enjoying, sharing, and supporting small businesses in your area. Instead of purchasing items from large, big-box stores, shopping with online retail stores or eating at chain restaurant’s, purchase items from local businesses and eat at local restaurants in your area. Purchase a gift or gift cards from local businesses in your area, shop locally on line or shop by phone, order take out & delivery and engage on social media. Shopping local is not limited to only purchasing goods and services from within your zip code. Many would define locality by region. Spread your loyalty throughout the area. By spending your time and money in local stores and restaurants, you can change people’s lives. We need to keep their doors

open and our community strong! To do this, it is important to remember that our communities need local businesses and those local businesses need support to remain healthy and strong. Choosing to spend locally, allows money to be cycled back into your community, which means you are helping boost the local economy. It also helps provide jobs in your local area. Plus, many small businesses are supplied by other entrepreneurs who are mostly local artisans so, investing in people in your area is an easy way for you to pay it forward. Panorama Community Magazine fully encourages everyone to support local small businesses. They are counting on us … let us show them how much they mean to our communities. Now is the time to support the places you love. This year, Panorama Community Magazine has chosen to show its support by purchasing gift certificates from many local businesses and restaurants. These gift certificates will be given away in Panorama’s Holiday Prize-A-Palooza Contest in the November and December issues. This is our gift to you… so be sure to enter to win one of these many prizes.

Budget-Friendly Tips For A Safe And Joyous Holiday 2020 (BPT) - Uncertainty continues into the 2020 holiday season, with limited travel, canceled events and strict budgets changing how Americans will celebrate this year. According to a recent Coinstar Holiday Survey, the majority of Americans said COVID-19 will influence how they celebrate the holidays. Fortunately, by thinking outside the box and keeping a positive attitude, you can stay healthy, stretch funds and create merry moments. Let these tips inspire you to celebrate the holiday season safely and on budget: • Maintain traditions in new, safe ways. Traditions bring comfort and hope, so rather than forgoing beloved activities due to coronavirus concerns, get creative instead. Plan a car caravan to look at holiday lights and have everyone keep a scorecard of favorite houses including winners for most creative, brightest, funniest and overall best. Set up a video chat and bake favorite holiday treats in real time from afar. Relatives can virtually tuck kids into bed by reading classic holiday books through a free digital video platform. These activities are safer to enjoy and will create meaningful memories to make the season special. • Make gifts to save money. You can still have a wonderful holiday even on a tight budget. A

budget-friendly option is to make it a homemade holiday this year. Face masks and hand sanitizer are great stocking stuffers that you can make and will be appreciated, especially this year. Patterns are readily available to make face masks and you can find recipes online for creating custom hand sanitizer. Another idea is to choose all handmade gifts from Etsy or local artists in your area, so you can give unique presents while supporting small businesses. • Cash in spare change. Even with fewer in-person gatherings and reduced gift giving this season, most people have increased expenses during the holiday season. Cashing in spare change is a good way to stretch your budget. Research shows Americans with spare change at home estimate that they have on average $113 in and around their homes. These funds can be used to buy gifts or apply to other holiday expenses. Coinstar kiosks found at most grocery stores are an easy way to convert loose change for cash, a no-fee eGift card or tax-deductible charity donation. • Plan a virtual gift exchange. According to the Coinstar Holiday Survey, two in five Americans who say their holiday will be different due to COVID-19 say they do not plan to travel or attend in-person gatherings. To enjoy the holidays safely, consider a virtual gift exchange with

friends or family. Drop off or mail gifts and plan a time for everyone to video chat and open presents together. Get dressed in your favorite holiday attire to make the event feel special, whether that's festive formal wear or ugly sweaters and sweats. Then, take turns opening gifts and feel the joy. • Give gifts with meaning. Rather than a traditional present, consider alternative gifts that show you care. Do you have a talent that would benefit others, such as tutoring a friend's child who is studying remotely? Could you drop off a meal for a senior who's homebound? Could you donate a snack basket for hard-working delivery personnel? Lastly, instead of a present, you could make a donation in the recipient's name to a charity close to that person's heart. • Delay holiday celebrations. All of these ideas can help you maximize the holiday season, but if you still long to celebrate in person, consider planning a gathering for later in 2021. According the survey, about half said they would consider "Christmas in July" in 2021 for in-person celebrations. So, whether it's a summer Christmas event, an early Friendsgiving or another winter holiday, it's something to look forward to once it's safe again. Send out "save the date" invitations and put your creative juices to work for a summer get-together. We will be closed Thanksgiving Day to spend time with our families

Help Families Struggling This Christmas Due To COVID-19 (Family Features) Nearly half of low-income Americans reported that they or someone in their household experienced some type of income loss during the pandemic, according to information published by Pew Research Center. Because more people are facing hardship this year due to the impacts of COVID-19, more families in your community will likely be in need of assistance this holiday season and into 2021. Organizations like The Salvation Army estimate they could serve up to 155% more people with Christmas assistance this year, assuming the resources are available, based on increased services already provided during the pandemic. In order to aid those most vulnerable, nonprofit organizations across the nation need your help. Consider donating gifts in bulk at Christmastime, or explore other ways to make an impact and serve as a beacon of hope for those in need: • Donate Food - Gathering around a table filled with homemade food is a treasured tradition for many families, but for others it's a

luxury beyond reach. Donating food to your local food pantry or other community organizations can help give the gift of Christmas, ensuring more families are able to come together to enjoy a meal as part of their holiday celebrations. • Volunteer Your Time - Not all gifts require spending money. You can give back by volunteering your time to make the holiday season brighter for families and individuals who need assistance. Organizations in your area often need volunteers for projects like sorting food and necessities for care packages, serving food in soup kitchens or making holiday cards to send to nursing homes.

wAnother example of how to get involved is through The Salvation Army's iconic Red Kettle Campaign. Protocols are in place to ensure the safety of bell ringers, donors and partners, so enthusiastic bell ringers can join the effort and help raise money this holiday season. • Adopt a Child for the Holidays - Some local organizations work directly with lowincome families in the community to identify their children's specific needs. They gather information on each child in the family, including their special interests, clothing sizes and wishes for holiday gifts. When you adopt a child or family, whether on your own or WE SPECIALIZE IN ORTHOPEDIC & DIABETIC FOOTWEAR

offer programs that rely on donations to put new clothes and toys under the tree for children and families that usually go without Christmas gifts. One example is The Salvation Army's Angel Tree Program, which connects a sponsor with a deserving child (or "Angel"). The trees can be found during the holiday season at retail stores, businesses and other locations throughout many communities. Anonymous donors select a name off of a tree, purchase the items listed on the tag and bring them back to the drop-off location to be donated. Whether you're able to adopt a child or simply provide a few items, be on the lookout for these commonly requested items as you tackle your holiday shopping this year: • Baby necessities like bottles, blankets, diapers and wipes • Warm weather attire, like winter coats, mit-

in partnership with others, you commit to purchasing items on the child's wish list to ensure they have everything he or she needs to celebrate the season, from food and gifts to clothing essentials. • Give a Recurring Gift - A staple of the holiday season, The Salvation Army's red kettles raised $126 million last year. That amount could be reduced by up to 50% due to the closing of retail stores, less retail foot traffic and an increasing unemployment rate, which would significantly limit the organization's ability to provide needed services to the most vulnerable. Enlisting in Love's Army with a sustaining monthly gift of $25 can help meet the growing need for assistance at Christmastime and into 2021. Your gift is invested locally, so you can be sure you're helping rescue Christmas for those in need in your own community. Another way to give money is by making a charitable gift in a loved one's name. Many organizations will provide a card acknowledging your one-time or ongoing gift, which you can wrap and give as a gift with a note explaining the thoughtful gesture. Choose A Child In Need For The Holiday’s… Your Heart Will Thank You! by Missy Nenstiel, Brandon’s Forever Home Brandon's Forever Home is a 501c3 charitable organization located in the heart of downtown Hazleton, PA created in 2014 to raise awareness about children in foster care and their need for permanent loving homes. It’s founding members, State Rep. Tarah Toohil and Attorney Lorine Angelo Ogurkis, realized the need in their community and decided to start the foundation to assist children in need and it has been growing ever since. Each year we serve nearly 300 children and their families for the holidays providing an annual holiday party, visit with Santa and gifts. It’s the most wonderful time of the year and Brandon’s Forever Home Virtual Christmas Tree is filling up with the wishes of our local children. If you or your

company would like to sponsor one of these deserving children, please visit brandonsforeverhome.com or our Facebook page to sign up with our virtual tree! Please check back often as our list of children grows daily! Our holiday party is December 1st so please have the gifts wrapped and tagged with the child's name and delivered to Brandon’s Forever Home no later than November 21st. We are located at 187 North Church Street, Hazleton, PA. Brandon’s Forever Home is also a food panty open to the public serving over 40 local families each week, we offer a mentor program for at risk foster teens, after school tutoring, seasonal activities, and provide

counseling and assistance for fostering and adoptions. We are always looking for local foster or adoptive families and can help guide those being called! Brandon’s forever Home is always looking for positive, committed volunteers. Whether it’s helping to run an event or accept donations on a Saturday morning. You can change the treatment of foster children in our community or aid in supplying them with new clothing, school supplies, health & beauty products, books, games, toys and activities. Home Decorating For The Holidays

(Family Features) Chances are good that at some point during the holiday season, you'll welcome guests into your home. Whether you lease or own your home, creating a cozy, festive setting for holiday gatherings can actually be quite simple, especially if you take on the project

one room at a time. One advantage of seasonal decorating is that it is, by definition, temporary. This gives you plenty of freedom to experiment with new ideas and completely transform your living space on a short-term basis. It's also an opportunity to get creative with your home's decor to create warm, inviting places for family and friends to gather. Get started decking the halls this holiday season with these room-by-room decorating tips from the design experts at Invitation Homes, one of the nation's premier home leasing companies with more than 80,000 singlefamily homes for lease in the United States. Here are a few ideas: • Exterior—Curb appeal isn't a concept reserved for buying and selling; set the festive mood from the moment guests arrive by enhancing your home's outdoor space. Bold or twinkling, strings of lights add instant holiday appeal, and the possibilities for creating a custom look are nearly endless when you use weather-resistant removable hooks. You can embellish the design with fun, whimsical inflatables or go more traditional with stylish wreaths and garland to accent the door. Make the look your own with unexpected touches like an old sled propped against the porch railing. The beauty of outdoor decorating is that virtually all of it can be easily removed to make way for a new season or event. • Entryway—Delight guests from the moment they enter your home by paying special attention to the entryway. It's a great place to introduce a theme you'll carry throughout the house such as seasonal patterns or textures like a colorful plaid print. Create ambient light with strings hung from the ceiling or wrap banisters and stairs with garland (pre-lit garland adds a classic touch). • Kitchen—In most homes, the kitchen is an entertaining hub. While platters of food may occupy many of the available surfaces, you can still incorporate a holiday theme. Set the table with a festive yuletide log with faux berries, pinecones and candles artfully placed nearby. Seasonal candles, festive seat cushions and a cheerful table runner all add subtle touches of holiday flair. Other ideas include dangling lights from the chandelier or stacking pinecones with string lights in a bowl or vase to accent the buffet line or to use as a table centerpiece. Holiday desserts

can be artwork in their own right, so get creative to make the dessert table a stand-out element of the decor. • Living Room—A comfy, cozy environment that invites guests to make themselves at home as they catch up with loved ones is a holiday entertaining must. Extend the holiday happiness into this space with little touches like a lantern filled with pinecones, faux gifts by the mantle, stockings hung from stocking holders that reflect your decorative theme, seasonal throw pillows and evergreen arrangements on the end tables and coffee table. • Bathrooms—It may be a smaller space, but the bathroom is a room every guest is likely to visit. Incorporate flameless candles and seasonal metallic accents that complement the fixtures. Hang holiday items from shower curtain rings and replace your standard curtain with a festive or candy-cane striped alternative. Be sure to finish the look with seasonal decorative towels. • Guest Rooms—Traveling during the holidays can be stressful, but you can do your part to make guests feel comfortable by adding some cheerful touches to the area they'll call home. A miniature evergreen tree in a planter or pot makes a fun addition to a nightstand. You can adorn headboards with garland or delicate lights and add festive throw pillows and blankets or even swap out linens entirely for a full-blown holiday welcome. Find more lease-friendly holiday tips at invitationhomes.com. Holiday Hosting Hosting guests can be stressful, especially during the holidays. These are some easy

ways to prepare for holiday guests and make sure they feel at home: • Tidy Up—Before you go all out with the tinsel and holly, take some time to tidy up the areas in your home guests will use the most. Your decorations can shine brighter and make a better impression without school bags and shoes

Cold Hands Warm Hearts 2020

cluttering the display. Take advantage of holiday sales and invest in some storage cubes or other storage options. • Candles—Not only do can they add visual appeal, but the right scent creates an ambiance that brings everyone together. If you want to stay away from anything with flames, there are plenty of alternatives, such as plug-in scent diffusers, room sprays and wax warmers.

• Snacks—Waiting for the big holiday meal can be tiresome. Set out some hors d'oeuvres for everyone to enjoy while they wait for the main course to be served. Cheese and cracker plates, hummus, veggies, mixed nuts and pretzels can help keep your guests from getting hungry. Make sure you ask about any allergies or dietary requirements beforehand so you can be prepared.

The Cold Hands Warm Hearts project to benefit United Charities, Inc. will mark it’s 16th year of collecting NEW coats, hats, blankets, scarfs, gloves, and socks for less fortunate children and their families in the Greater Hazleton Area starting Nov. 11th thru Dec. 11th. The staff at United Charities will distribute your warm gifts to the children and families in need during this holiday season. This holiday collection begins around Veteran’s Day in memory of my dad, Joe Maddon Sr., a WWll vet and also in memory of all the vets past and present who sacrificed their warmth and comfort to keep us safe! While stationed in Europe, my dad would give away his extra gloves, scarfs and candy to kids he would meet on the streets during the cold winter months. Over the past 16 years the generosity of the people from the Greater Hazleton area have helped keep his memory alive with these simple gifts of warmth! Boscov’s Laurel Mall will again display a Cold Hands Warm Hearts “Giving Tree” OR if any local business would like a collection bin please call: Carmine Parlatore @ 751-3351. Monetary donations will also be accepted to purchase new kids coats and blankets! Make Checks payable to: Cold Hands Warm Hearts c/o Carmine Parlatore 11 Independence Cr. Make Small Holiday Celebrations Special With A Fresh Menu (Family Features) Holiday festivities with immediate family members or just a few friends rather than larger gatherings may feel different than normal, but you can make the most of the situation with these tips to add intimacy and special meaning to celebratory moments: • Use special dishes, glassware and linens to convey the tone of the celebration. Go ahead and use your best dishes or enhance your everyday plates with the use of cloth napkins or a festive tablecloth. Bring out the fancy glasses to savor every sip. • Arrange visually appealing, individual mini-snack platters for each person. Combine grapes with a special cheese, crackers, olives and nuts for an easy way to curb appetites before the main course. • Set a festive table with a simple but creative centerpiece. For instance, you can combine candles, flowers and draped bunches of colorful grapes. Place votive candles on mirrors for added shimmer and sparkle. Tie a gold or silver wire ribbon bow around the napkins at each place setting. Handwritten place cards with guests' names can add a surprising and special touch.

• Stay healthy to enjoy the holidays. Choose healthy foods like fruits and vegetables that help support the immune system. Maintain your exercise schedule as much as possible and ensure you are getting enough sleep. • Opt for homemade over processed foods for signature dishes then reinforce with prepared items to fill out the menu, if needed. Let your guests bring part of the meal or something to contribute to the festivities. Adding a sweet touch to the menu can help keep guests coming back for more. For example, fresh California grapes are available into January and are perfect for the holiday season. Enjoy them as a fresh, healthy snack or side dish, or

as an ingredient to add taste and visual appeal to recipes to make the season feel special. • Create the perfect Appetizer Plate. Delight your guests with individual appetizer plates this season by considering color, texture and presentation. Remember, this is the prelude to the meal, so small portions are perfectly fine. Consider this starter list: • Cheese • Nuts • Fresh grapes • Olives • Hummus • Marinated artichoke hearts • Salami slices • Spinach or other dips • Dolmades (stuffed grape leaves) • Roasted red peppers • Crackers • Pita triangles • Thin breadsticks • Pretzels • Jam or honey Visit grapesfromcalifornia.com/recipe to find more holiday-worthy dishes from appetizers and entrees to sides, snacks and desserts. Pardon, Mr. Turkey Each year as Thanksgiving approaches, the president of the United States receives two turkeys from the National Turkey Federation and the Poultry and Egg National Board. Rather than eat them, the president pardons the turkeys in a small ceremony at the White House. When the tradition started is not clear. Some say that President Abraham Lincoln started it when he pardoned his son Tad’s pet turkey. Others say President Harry Truman started the tradition in 1947, although there is no official proof of that. President John F. Kennedy was given a turkey in 1963, but chose not to eat it. In 1989, President George H.W. Bush pardoned the turkey for the first time officially. Since then, every president has pardoned an official turkey and an alternate every year. The turkeys are sent to a farm or ranch to live out the rest of their days.

Family Caregivers Of Veterans Eligible For Free Professional Help (NAPSI)—The Elizabeth Dole Foundation and U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs have launched an emergency respite care fund for the family caregivers of wounded, ill, and injured veterans. The program, Respite Relief for Military and Veteran Caregivers, will provide non-medical, no-cost, professional home care to veteran caregivers who are struggling during the COVID-19 pandemic. CareLinx, a nationwide professional home care network, helped launch the fund with a donation of $1 million worth of services. Wounded Warrior Project then contributed an additional $1 million to expand the program. The Foundation expects to provide 75,000 hours of care to more than 3,000 veteran caregivers. “The lack of affordable, convenient, professional respite care has always taken a significant toll on the emotional and physical well-being of veteran caregivers,” said Steve Schwab, CEO of the Elizabeth Dole Foundation. “Now, due to the increased health risks and limitations created by the pandemic, we are seeing a spike in the need for short-term relief.” Even as states re-open, some of the most critically wounded or ill veterans and their caregivers will have a long journey back to the pre-pandemic world. These veterans often have vulnerable immune systems that require their caregivers to take every precaution against exposure. By asking family and friends to keep their distance, they are losing a vital source of

daily support. “We are grateful to CareLinx and Wounded Warrior Project for helping us respond to this urgent need,” Schwab continued. “We hope other organizations also step up, so we can ensure every veteran caregiver suffering during COVID-19 receives the help they need.” The program is rolling out in select regions and will expand nationwide over time. Eligible caregivers can request services that include companionship, grocery shopping, cooking, mobility assistance, transportation, bathing, and other activities of daily living. AARP and Bob Woodruff Foundation have also joined as key collaborators for this effort to help spread the word to military and veteran caregivers. Foster Care And The Pandemic (NAPSI)—Recent surveys of youth in foster care found nearly half (49%) expressed an immediate resource need during the COVID-19 pandemic—and you can help reverse that. Distance Learning Access (15%) was the top survey response, with Enrichment Activities (14%), Food Support (4%) and Cell Phones (4%) also discussed. “The demand for resources is greater than ever,” said Lisa Chin, CEO of Treehouse, which conducted the study. “Whether school is in the classroom or online, our youth continue to grow. They need new clothes, school supplies and other essentials.” The nonprofit organization partners with youth in care so they have a childhood and a future. Collaborating with social workers, foster care liaisons and caregivers to ensure access to resources is critical to success. When there are gaps, Treehouse provides tangible resources, but it can’t do it alone. “Community is such a key part of what we do here, and it’s going to take all of us to address this crisis and continue moving forward,” Chin said. Treehouse also has shifted to connecting with high school students in its Graduation Success program using remote strategies. Even before the pandemic, only about 50 percent of youth in care graduated compared to more than 75 percent who stick with Treehouse. One student in the program, Karizma, thrives as she completes her schoolwork from home. Last year, she started working with Ruby Zarate, a Graduation Success Coordinator at Treehouse. The two would usually meet weekly in person at school, and have now been staying in touch through frequent phone calls, texts and FaceTime. Although it’s going well, Karizma looks forward to every-

The Veterans Day Edition by Rich Lipinski

Baseball, more than any other form of entertainment, is deeply rooted in American culture. As baseball rules evolved through the 1850’s into the sport we more or less recognize today, soldiers took the sport with them and many players became soldiers themselves. During the Civil War, the game spread through encampments and prisoner of war camps. Baseball was brought to the Philippines during the Spanish American War. Soldiers stationed in Puerto Rico after the war helped spread the popularity across the island. In the early 1900’s, Major General Abner Doubleday was credited with the invention of baseball, to ensure the legend that baseball was truly an American creation. During WWI in May 1918, the Selective Service Division issued the “work or fight” rule, which stated that by July 1, all men of draft age not involved in “useful” work could be brought before a draft board and compelled to participate in war work or military service. It was estimated 38% of all MLB players served during the war and eight current or former players were either killed in action or died of illness during the war. President Roosevelt encouraged baseball to continue during the war as an important part of the American psyche. During both wars there were some continuous times against the continuing operation of baseball, both by the public and the man power shortages, especially in the minor leagues. The shortage of players led to the establishment of The All-American Girls Professional Baseball League. MLB games were broadcast to the troops in Korea and Vietnam. As recently as 9-11, the restarting of baseball after the attacks were herald as part of the healing process by those closest to ground zero. Sports continue to be important part of Armed Forces Network. According to baseballgreatestsacrifice.com, there have been thousands of major league and minor league players who served and hundreds who gave the greatest sacrifice. 64 Baseball Hall of Famers are included in that list. Many local baseball players joined the call to serve.

(BPT) - Car maintenance is often a scheduled chore when you're regularly driving. However, if you're driving less due to the current environment, maintenance can easily become a lesser priority or even completely forgotten. Hankook Tire's latest Gauge Index found that as daily driving decreased as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, nearly one-third (30%) of Americans have done less car cleaning and maintenance too. But car maintenance is always important, especially as drivers around the country gradually resume their travels and hit the road. Hankook Tire found that 60% of Americans expect to take more car trips moving forward. With that in mind, the following are five reasons it's important to keep up with regular car maintenance: 1. Safety—First and foremost: Regular car maintenance helps increase safety when driving. This is especially important if your car has been parked for a while. Be sure to check your fluids (oil, washer, coolant, etc.) and inspect the tires to make sure that they haven't lost their pressure. After all, the Gauge revealed 70% of Americans have not regularly been checking tire pressure during the pandemic. Low tire pressure can lead to several issues such as poor performance, premature wear and higher rolling resistance, which can impact fuel efficiency. 2. Save time and money—Consistent car maintenance also helps extend the overall life of not only your tires, but the systems that drive them, including the engine, suspension, brakes and transmission. With the median price of a set of four tires ranging from $300 to $600, investing in regular tire upkeep such as rotations and alignment when necessary, helps deter more costly repairs down the road - making both your car, and your money, go further. And, you'll save time. Regularly scheduled basic maintenance appointments traditionally don't take too long - and some dealerships even offer special pick-up and drop-off appointments so you never have to leave the comfort of your home.

3. First place performance—Just like a regular gym routine helps keep your muscle groups firing on all cylinders, regular trips to the mechanic can provide the same benefit to your car. Whether it's a crushing leg day (suspension) or a cardio workout (engine), routine inspection of your shoes (tires) will help you maximize your workout traction so you're ready for the next round and running at peak performance. 4. Cleanliness—While cleaning the vehicle's interior and exterior was the primary maintenance measure (40%) Americans took at the height of quarantine, the idea of clean cars goes beyond just dust on the dashboard and sanitized seatbelts. It keeps the environment clean, too. Little maintenance checks add up to a big environmental impact. For example, regular oil changes contribute to a cleaner engine and lower vehicle emissions, while properly inflated tires can contribute to better fuel efficiency. 5. Vehicle value—When the time comes to upgrade your vehicle, one of the first points of inspection is on the inside. A vehicle's internal condition is one of the key factors in determining its worth, so it's best to keep everything welloiled and running smoothly, even if you don't have any immediate plans to trade it in. While it is recommended to adhere to your vehicle's outlined maintenance schedule, there are a few things that drivers can do on a regular basis to provide added value. Every month, double-check to make sure headlights and taillights are working, fluids are topped off, and your belt and hose systems are running smoothly. Use the penny test to check your tire's tread. In addition, keeping a vehicle maintenance log helps you stay organized and ensure good habits that can have a real impact when it comes time to trade in. If any issues do arise, Hankook recommends getting your vehicle checked out by a certified mechanic before getting back behind the wheel.

Battery Technology And Electric Vehicles by Thomas R. Buff Over the last two decades, the technology in battery design has skyrocketed the electric car industry to unbelievable heights. Although electric and hybrid vehicles have seen improvements in battery life and reliability in the past few years, the new developments concerning lithium batteries are now pushing the bounds of reliability, longevity and unbelievable power. If you believe that electric vehicles are not for you, read on. You may have a change of mind. For many years, the consumer and commercial transportation industries have been searching for ways to reduce and eliminate the need for fossil fuels in internal combustion engines. Many automotive manufactures developed electric vehicles that did just that, but at the sacrifice of cost and reliability. Hybrids or the combination of electric and fuel-powered vehicles that use the engine to charge the batteries when needed became top sellers. Fully electric or plug in vehicles lagged behind in sales due to expensive batteries with limited range and life. Range anxiety, (or the thought of losing battery power while driving) was a big issue for these car owners. These factors kept motorists away from the electric vehicle market. Since the late 1990s, the advantages in lithium-ion battery technology were driven by the needs of the computer, portable electronics and mobile phone industries. Unlike the old nickel-cadmium battery, the lithium –ion battery can be discharged and recharged daily from a low state of charge to full charge very quickly. Over the last two decades, lithium-ion battery technology has worked its way to the forefront of the automotive market. These batteries enable automakers to redefine consumer and commercial transportation by

reducing or eliminating the need for fossil fuels in internal combustion engines. But battery technology continually pushes the bounds of lithium-ion batteries' ability to provide ample power, longevity and safety. These batteries are now stepping up to the plate. While it was once a big deal for an electric vehicle to break the 100-mile barrier on a charge, eight electric vehicle models for the 2019 year can run for more than 200 miles on a full battery charge. The Tesla group now leads the pack with its Models 3, S, and X topping out at near or above 300 miles per charging session. The more-affordable Hyundai Kona Electric and Kia Niro Electric offer capacities of 258 and 239 miles, respectively, while the Chevrolet Bolt EV is at 238 miles and the coming Nissan Leaf Plus is estimated to run for 226 miles on a full charge. Even with gas prices remaining relatively affordable, it’s still cheaper to keep an electric car running. For example, the Environmental Protection Agency says the Hyundai Ioniq Electric, which is rated at the electric equivalent of 136 mpg in combined city/highway driving, will cost an owner $500 a year to run for 15,000 miles, based on average power rates. The EPA estimates an Ioniq Electric owner will spend $4,250 less in fuel costs over a five-year period than will someone driving an average vehicle the same distance. And by not having to make weekly trips to the gas station, an EV owner can further save cash by avoiding impulse purchases for things like drinks, snacks, and lottery tickets. According to the latest Department of Energy estimates, there are nearly 21,000 public EV charging stations up and running across the U.S. While that figure has doubled over the last couple of years, they’re still relatively

rare compared to gas stations. Still, depending on where you live you’ll find them in public parking garages at airports, office buildings and hospitals and in many retailers’ and shopping mall parking lots. Owning an electric car means never having to take the vehicle in for oil changes and tune-ups, and there are far fewer moving parts that would eventually fail and need replacing. EVs use a simple one-speed transmission and thus do not have as many wearand-tear items like spark plugs, valves, muffler/ tailpipe, distributor, starter, clutch, drive belts, hoses, and a catalytic converter. Regular service visits are typically limited to rotating the tires and checking brake pads and other components. So, if you are in the market for a new vehicle, don’t rule out the possibility of owning an electric powered vehicle. Do your research and compare the results of a gasoline engine versus electric. The time ha come to explore the possibilities. Happy Motoring! Stay healthy and safe.

Keep it simple and pick plants in one or two hues that contrast with the exterior of your home. Regular mowing and tending to weeds will always help your front yard look its best. • Seal window and doors - Small gaps and cracks around windows and doors can allow cold air and rain to make its way inside. Keep your home protected and warm during the fall and winter seasons by replacing worn exterior caulk with DAP Dynaflex Ultra™ Advanced Exterior Sealant. Dynaflex Ultra uses DAP's exclusive WeatherMax Technology™ to create a waterproof and weatherproof seal that won't crack or discolor over time • Replace the furnace filter - Dirty filters mean your furnace will likely work harder. Regularly changing the filters in your central air and heating system can significantly improve its efficiency and longevity, while easing the pressure on your wallet. In most homes, filters should be changed monthly during the heating season. You should also have your furnace serviced periodically to make sure it is working properly and to help avoid larger repairs later on when the temperature drops. Health Effects Of Indoor Air Quality On Families by The Experts at S.J. Kowalski During the COVID-19 pandemic, families have spent more time than ever inside their homes. Especially since our children are being home-schooled and doing online classes and zoom learning. Therefore it is important that our indoor environments are fully supportive of our health and wellbeing. Air pollution has been linked to serious conditions such as cancer, asthma, and cardiovascular diseases. The health impact of the air in our homes needs to be taken seriously. Although COVID-19 has not been proven to be transmitted by HVAC systems, there is increasing concern about virus particles remaining airborne long enough to infect people nearby, under some conditions. If that is true, then presumably particles could enter an air distribution system. The good news is, as a homeowner the most important thing you can do is have regular HVAC maintenance done by a professional and change your filters often. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor environments are 2-5 times as polluted as the outdoors, and occasionally up to 100 times as polluted. The EPA has ranked indoor air pollution, as one of the top 5 environmental dangers facing our planet. Research has proven there is a link between indoor pollution and children’s respiratory health in 80% of the cases researched. We are especially proud to offer the

How To Bring More Space Into Bathrooms (Family Features) Today's designers, architects and builders are creating modern bathrooms that are practical, luxurious, comfortable and accommodating. They know homeowners and homebuyers desire - even demand - these features regardless of the bathroom's size or layout. Therein lies the challenge: How to create a feeling of spaciousness and openness without sacrificing valuable floor space, obstructing traffic flow or forfeiting storage space. Despite these impediments, building professionals can meet these bath-design challenges and even exceed them with an option like Johnson Pocket Door Frame Kits. Pocket doors can be installed in

virtually any room but are particularly well suited for use in bathrooms, where space is often at a premium. The typical hinged door requires up to 14 square feet of floor space to swing open. A pocket door, conversely, slides into the wall, leaving the space in front of and on either side of the doorway open and available. Pocket doors are commonly installed at the entrances to bathrooms and can also be used to conceal linen closets and washers and dryers when the bathroom serves double duty as a laundry room. There's also a growing bathroom reroom. However, space restrictions seldom almodeling trend of enclosing the toilet alcove low for the installation of a swinging door, so to create a toilet "room" within the bathremodelers often install pocket doors. Pocket door frames also allow for items to be mounted on the pocket wall. For instance, when used with Johnson's 151558PL Pocket Wall Reinforcement Clip Set and 5/8-inch thick plywood, the 1500SC Pocket Door Frame with all-steel split studs can support wall-mounted fixtures such as towel bars, shelves, framed mirrors or artwork. The pocket door frame kit comes equipped with soft-close hardware that allows doors up to 200 pounds to be opened and closed by the touch of a fingertip for less risk of pinched fingers and slammed doors. The frame also comes with self-tapping screws that work for both drywall and finish trim, and the smooth-rolling pocket door hardware and track exceed ANSI standards, meaning they can successfully complete 100,000 opening and closing cycles. Another potentially unexpected benefit of using pocket doors in bathrooms is the free space gained can be used to install larger vanity cabinets, freestanding shelving units, bigger bathtubs and other fixtures that may have been squeezed out in order to accommodate swinging doors. 4 Easy And Effective Ways To Protect Your Home (BPT) - Data collected in recent years by the FBI has revealed that there are roughly 2.5 million burglaries a year. This averages out to one burglary about every 13 seconds nationwide. So, while many feel safe and secure at home, one can never be too prepared when it comes to protecting your loved ones. But what's the solution? Beyond evaluating your surroundings and identifying unsecure access points, many homeowners can benefit from taking proactive preventative measures to ensure their homes and families are protected. And while installing an expensive, high-tech security system is an easy solution, there are other measures that can be taken to provide immediate barriers and establish a safer distance from potential threats. Here are four effective ways to easily prepare and protect your home yearround: 1. Identify unsecure parts of the home. Before even implementing a home security plan, examine all the doors and windows in your house. Pay close attention to whether there are any windows that are accessible from ground-level or ones that might not lock properly. Likewise, identify any doors in your house that may feel "at risk." This can be doors without deadbolts, older ones that may easily be knocked in, or those that are hidden and dark, making them ideal for home invaders to stealthily leverage. Reevaluate each door, window or entryway and determine a game plan for increased home security. 2. Strengthen door security. If your primary concern is reinforcing your doors, there are several easy-to-install and affordable options to help support hinged and sliding doors. Designed for nearly every door, products

such as an adjustable Door Security Bar can provide a strong grip and help prevent doors from opening. However, if you would prefer to alert people when an intruder is present, a SABRE Door Stop Alarm can provide peace of mind. Designed to look like a simple door wedge, a piercing alarm sounds when the door opens slightly and pressure is applied, drawing immediate attention to the situation from up to 1,500 feet away. It can be easily set up on any hotel door or rental property, bringing an added sense of security on the road. 3. Safeguard windows. When looking to protect windows, as well as doors, one cost-effective solution can be installing the portable Door and Window Alarm Kit, which comes with four alarms. Affixing onto any window, this alarm requires no additional wiring and emits a loud 120dB sound when it detects an unwanted intruder entering, serving as a deterrent as well as an attention-grabbing signal

to homeowners and surrounding neighbors up to 750 feet away. 4. Take home defense to the next level. Home intrusions can leave homeowners feeling vulnerable, especially if these incidents happen while they are home. One easy-to-use, readily accessible solution for homeowners is the SABRE Home Defense Pepper Gel, which is designed for using indoors with an 18-foot range. Another option for those seeking additional home security measures is the Pepper Spray Launcher Home Defense Kit, which allows for greater distance between the homeowner and intruder. The Launcher deploys pepper powder projectiles up to 175 feet away, offering more stopping power and creating an even safer distance between your family and an intruder.

How To Make The Holidays Special For Your Loved One With Dementia by Rachael Kapes, Heritage Hill Senior Living Community The holidays are supposed to be a time of celebration, but when you are caring for a loved one living with Alzheimer’s disease or another form of dementia, it seems like the holidays just add more stress. This time of year is filled with opportunities for togetherness and creating new memories. While preparations may be different, making the holidays special for you and your loved one is very much possible. To help ease your anxieties, consider these tips: Provide an update. It may be

months since certain relatives have seen your Mom. Be honest about her dementia diagnosis and if her abilities have changed or symptoms progressed. You can suggest ways to listen patiently and other communication tips, reminding your family members that it is the connection rather than the content of what is being said that matters. You can also use this moment to explain your caregiving responsibilities and set realistic expectations for what you can contribute to family holiday celebrations. Designate a respite area. Excessive

noise and commotion can be overwhelming for those living with dementia. Provide a quiet place where Mom can rest if she becomes too tired or stimulated. Include your loved one. Mom may not be able to make the turkey and all the fixings, but she can still take part in holiday preparations. Offering simple tasks like tidying up before guests arrive, helping to mix ingredients or cookie batter, or setting the table will make her feel important and purposeful. Have patience with yourself. You may feel like you are the “hostess with the mostess,” but even you need a break. Take a deep breath, and when you need to—ask for help! Senior living communities that provide memory care services can be a source of comfort to family caregivers. These senior care experts can give caregiver advice, community resources, fun activity ideas, and more. At Heritage Hill Senior Community, our executive director and resident care director facilitate a free virtual series every month called “Caring for the Caregiver” that features insightful discussions on financial planning, positive communication strategies, preparing for the holidays, and more. The next meeting is on Tuesday, Dec. 15, at 2 p.m. For more information or to receive your Zoom link, please contact me at 570-2153172 or by email at rtimm@heritagehillsenior.com.

Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: Are You At Risk? (NAPSI)—Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is one of the most common liver diseases in the United States. NAFLD is typically a silent disease with few or no symptoms, and most people have no complications. However, some people could develop serious complications such as cirrhosis or liver cancer. Learn more about NAFLD, factors that increase your risk for NAFLD, and research that is leading the way toward new treatments. What is NAFLD? NAFLD is a condition in which excess fat is stored in your liver and the buildup of fat isn’t caused by heavy alcohol use. A more severe form of NAFLD called nonalcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH) also causes inflammation and liver damage. NASH can lead to liver cancer, permanent liver scarring called cirrhosis and liver failure. If you develop liver failure, you may need a liver transplant to survive.

Who is at risk for NAFLD? If you have certain conditions such as

obesity, high cholesterol or type 2 diabetes, you might be at risk for NAFLD. As obesity rates have increased in the United States, NAFLD has also become more common. Research suggests that NAFLD currently affects 30% to 40% of U.S. adults and up to 10% of U.S. children. Although NAFLD may occur in people of all races and ethnicities, it is most common among Hispanics, followed by non-Hispanic whites. NAFLD is less common among African Americans.

Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), part of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), conducts and supports NAFLD research. In the past decade, NIDDKsupported researchers have discovered that specific genes play a role in causing NAFLD. These genes may help explain why NAFLD is more common in some racial and ethnic groups than in others. NIDDK-sponsored studies are also testing possible treatments for NAFLD. For example, an early study suggested that the natuAre there treatments for NAFLD? ral form of vitamin E and a diabetes medicine Weight loss can improve NAFLD. COVID-19 And Your Weight provided by Lehigh Valley Health Network We all know that a healthy weight is an important part of overall health. Researchers are finding that people’s weight can also have a major impact on how their body is able to recover from COVID-19. Does my weight put me at risk for COVID-19?

Anyone can develop COVID-19, however there are certain factors that could increase your risk for complications to the disease. One of those risk factors outlined by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is obesity, in addition to many others including age, having cancer, diabetes, kidney disease, lung disease, heart disease and hypertension.

Obesity is defined as a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher. Not sure of your BMI? Use this simple BMI calculator by entering your height and weight. BMI is a good indicator of your weight health for most people. People who shouldn’t rely on BMI include muscle builders, long-distance runners, pregnant women, elderly people or young children. If you fall into one of those categories, consult with your health care provider about your weight. Why is weight a risk factor for complications from COVID-19? Any time someone develops an illness and has a comorbidity (an existing condition), it impacts the body’s ability to recover. Since people with obesity have less respiratory reserve, they may find it harder to recover from any respiratory illness, including COVID-19. “Obesity has been found to be an independent risk factor for poor outcomes in patients with COVID-19,” says T. Daniel Harrison, DO, with LVPG General and Bariatric Surgery. “Obesity is the primary risk factor for type 2 diabetes,

hypertension and obstructive sleep apnea – all of which come with poorer outcomes in COVID-19 patients.” Should I lose weight during the pandemic? The pandemic should not stop your pursuit for health. “Overweight patients should continue to work on their overall health and weight control, even during the pandemic,” says Harrison. “This includes continuing on a path toward bariatric surgery.” There are many socially distant ways to get exercise, including going for a walk, run or bike ride outdoors. You can also cook more at home using healthy ingredients. It’s also a good idea to speak with your provider for guidance. Is it safe to pursue bariatric surgery during the pandemic? In short, yes. “In the beginning of the pandemic, Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) delayed all non-emergent procedures, including bariatric surgery, to preserve personal protective equipment and ensure that the health network had sufficient resources for patients with COVID-19,” Harrison says. “We now have a much better handle on the numbers and can track our hospital rates effectively.” With additional safety precautions, LVHN restarted bariatric surgery in early May. All bariatric patients are on a separate floor of the hospital than COVID-19 patients, and everyone who enters the building from colleagues to patients and visitors is screened for COVID-19. The American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery (ASMBS) recently released a statement saying that people with obesity are “safer through surgery” during the pandemic. “It is better to have had bariatric surgery and lost weight, rather than to remain obese and at higher risk,” says Harrison. It's easy for you to take the first step on your weight-loss journey. Jonathan Perry, MD is a general and bariatric surgeon located at the Health & Wellness Center at Hazleton. More People Go To Chiropractors Than Ever Before! by John Degenhart, DC When I first became a chiropractor in 1980, things were different. No health insurance covered chiropractic care, and the phone book wouldn’t put us in the yellow pages. Many doctors thought we were second-rate “doctors” and would never refer their patients to us. But now that I’m here 40 years, it’s a joy to see how my beloved profession has grown. All health insurances now recognize and cover chiropractic care. We are in the Yellow Pages since 1984 and most doctors realize we are specialist and will refer their patients to us. Pain killers, physical therapy and shots are all more effective when the spine is all in proper alignment. So, we do TV shows and write articles to continually educate the public on what chiropractors do. Yet as you read this, if you have never seen a chiropractor or still “just don’t believe” in chiropractors, look what the latest government study came out in the RAND Report. It stated “Of 20,000 patients followed

Periodontal Disease And Its Effects On Your Systemic Health by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. After the results of timeless research studies and clinical trials, endless evidence continues to surface and confirm the Periodontal/Systemic Link. When either link in the chain is compromised or broken, the remaining link will be adversely affected as a result. Proper early diagnosis, detection, and maintenance of these essential interconnected links will assure optimal health and longevity. Elder patients who suffer from Osteoporosis will typically experience loss of bony tooth support resulting in loosening and eventual loss of teeth. Periodontal Disease, if left unchecked will lead to bacterial accumulation in the oral cavity which may find its way into one’s lungs leading to pneumonia or the respiratory maladies. Those who have Diabetes are more likely to have Periodontal Disease than NonDiabetics more than likely due to increased infection susceptibility of diabetics. Heart Disease has also been linked directly to the presence of Periodontal Disease most likely due to the occurrence of the inflammation process. Periodontal Disease has also been linked to the worsening of existing cardiac conditions. A co-consultation is advised between your Dentist and Cardiologist to properly guide treatment and advise the use of antibiotics prior to dental treatments. There is now a very strong link between the incidence of strokes and the occurrence of Periodontal Disease. Once a topic up for discussion, it is now more a certainty. Mechanical Motion Therapy Is A Game Changer by Dr. Scott D. Ungemach, De Jesus Family Chiropractic MMT is a new therapy that is a combination of instrument technology coupled with simultaneous patient-assisted specific postures and movements. This dualmotion therapy is the guiding principle of MMT. It affects muscles, ligaments, joints, and the nervous system. During MMT, the patient, moves in a specific motion pattern while the specialist directs the instrument in a prescribed manner. The Pro-Soft 360 computer system directs the right amount of tension and force upon the tissues as the treat-

ment is applied. Most commonly, musculoskeletal pain is linked to a dysfunction in muscle, ligament, joint capsule, or fascia (the connective tissue of the body). Each of these tissues contains specialized sensory receptors which sense or “tell” the nervous system to react in

a protected or guarded manner. Unchecked, this leads to pain, inflammation, and limitations in motion and/or flexibility. As these tissues’ “lock” the injured body part into a position to avoid pain, these same tissues can shorten and at times, form scar tissue, making the problem worsen over time. Mechanical Motion Therapy can have a powerful, pain relieving effect on the tissues containing the specialized receptors, even in instances where it has been present for years. MMT affects the sensation of pain by altering the patient’s pain threshold. In other words, it decreases the negative effect of these pain receptors while gaining increased motion, improved balance, and flexibility as a result. Research has shown that 80% of the population suffers from pain and inflammation that limits the ability to do everything from the basics of everyday life, such as getting dressed without pain, to being forced to avoid or limit social activities with friends and family. Finally, there is a proven technology available to change lives for the better. At De Jesus Family Chiropractic, we are proud to be the first in NEPA to offer this amazing technology. Covid Lung Cancer Awareness And Treatment Myths November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month. During the month, people throughout the country come together to support the lung cancer community and raise awareness about the disease. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, making up almost 25% of all cancer deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. The ACS estimates that about 228,820 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2020, with 10,710 of those cases in Pennsylvania. There are several treatment options for lung cancer and radiation therapy is a proven treatment option with a low risk of complications. There are numerous reasons why radiation therapy might be used, including: - As the main treatment, especially if the lung tumor can’t be removed because of its size or location, if a person isn’t healthy enough for surgery, or if a person doesn’t want surgery. - After surgery to try to kill any small areas of cancer that surgery might have missed. - Before surgery to try to shrink a lung tumor to make it easier to remove. - To treat a single area of cancer spread, such as to the brain or bone. - To relieve (palliate) symptoms of advanced lung cancer such as pain, bleeding, trouble swallowing, cough, or problems caused by spread to other organs such as the brain. This can be accomplished by several methods including Exter-

by Stephen Schleicher, MD. nal Beam Radiation (X-Ray). At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we use radiation therapy to treat lung cancer. Radiation therapy for the treatment of lung cancer uses powerful, high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing. The radiation beam is aimed at the lung cancer tumor and kills the cancer cells only in that area of the lung. Radiation therapy is delivered safely, painlessly, and does not involve surgery. Treatments do not require hospitalization and only take about 10 to 15 minutes. Side effects are usually mild and manageable with medication. As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton is not wavering on our commitment to providing patients with safe, high-quality, and comprehensive cancer treatment services. Recently CNN published an article entitled: 7 myths are fueling new Covid-19 surges. Allow me to paraphrase: 1) Because Pennsylvania has gone green the pandemic is burning itself out. False: hot spots are already cropping up in sections of Pennsylvania and unfortunately the Hazleton area is not immune. Covid-19 will remain a threat until an effective vaccine is available. Several are in development but don’t hold your breath. 2) Nothing to worry about because I am young and healthy. False. The death toll among the “young and healthy” is not insignificant. Further, although the majority of preteens and teens with Covid-19 are either symptom-free or mildly affected, they can still spread disease to their teachers, parents and grandparents. 3) Temperature screenings will catch all cases of Covid-19. False. Doctors’ offices and many businesses perform temperature checks routinely. This certainly may detect persons with an active infection but is of no use if a patient harbors the virus and has no symptoms. 4) I don’t need to wear a mask. Totally False and against the law in Pennsylvania when in public spaces. Arizona and Florida did not require masks and soon became overwhelmed with Covid cases. 5) The rate of deaths is decreasing so things are getting better. Things are not getting better. Don’t become a statistic. 6) I’ve already tested negative, so nothing to worry about. False. Lot’s to worry about. The test could be falsely negative, or you could become infected anytime after the test was performed. 7) Maybe we should just let nature take its course (herd immunity). Bad idea: no one can predict the course of this dangerous virus that has turned the world upside down. The sole doctor on the Covid Task Force advocating this approach is a radiologist, not an infectious disease expert. Unfortunately, the current administration often endorses pseudoscience over science endangering the lives of the American public.

What’s Happening At Providence Place Drums? by Stephanie N. Miller, Director of Sales

Pictured above: Carolyn Fellin (left) and Linda Benson(right).

October was one of our favorite months here at Providence Place. The scenic views from our third-floor balcony and walking path keep the residents amazed! Residents come inside to warm apple dumplings and cider on chilly days. They enjoy indoor entertainment with exotic animals, crafts, and country rides through the valley. Residents and staff participated in the walk to end Alzheimer’s and raised money to support the cause! We look forward to November as we bring in the holiday season! We are welcoming families to visit their loved ones indoors/outdoors in our designated areas. We are accepting new admissions and taking precautions to keep everyone safe! Contact Stephanie Miller 570-956-8495, Director of Sales, if you are interested in coming to see our campus located at 149 South Hunter Highway, Drums, PA!

What Does A Heart Attack Look Like? by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers More than 1 million people in the United States suffer from a heart attack each year. Most of us have a specific idea of what a heart attack looks like: someone feels an abrupt, strong pain that causes them to stop in their tracks and clutch their chest. While some heart attacks do happen suddenly, many start slowly, with pain or discomfort. A person can have symptoms for hours before they even realize they’re having a heart attack. Simple lifestyle changes can improve heart health. A number of enjoyable activities, like sharing healthy meals with loved ones, regular exercise and maintaining positive mental health can help those recovering from a heart attack or trying to reduce the risk of

developing issues. Knowing what signs to look for can save critical time, and it’s important to be aware of the signs: • Chest discomfort – The chest pain associated with a heart attack doesn’t feel the same for everyone. Some people experience squeezing, discomfort or a feeling of fullness. • Pain or discomfort throughout the body – Heart attack pain isn’t limited to the chest area. Heart attack symptoms can include soreness in the neck, arms, jaw or back, or a combination of these. Women are more likely than men to experience jaw and back pain when suffering from a heart attack. • Shortness of breath – Shortness of breath is a heart attack symptom that is not usually

recognized as one. However, those vulnerable to heart problems should be aware of any sudden breathing problems, especially if combined with other symptoms • Nausea - Lightheadedness, vomiting, cold sweats and nausea are also symptoms that are not often associated with a heart attack, but can signal the onset of one. Types of heart attacks • NSTEMI—NSTEMI heart attacks happen when blood flow to the heart through a coronary artery is severely restricted but not entirely blocked. • Demand Ischemia—Demand ischemia is another type of heart attack where blockages in the arteries may not be present. It happens when a patient’s heart needs more oxygen than is available in the body’s supply. • Silent Heart Attacks—A heart attack does not always have obvious symptoms. In fact, a heart attack can happen without a person knowing it. These are often referred to as silent heart attacks. • Coronary Artery Spasm—A coronary artery spasm is when the artery wall tightens and blood flow through the artery is restricted. • Cardiac Arrest—Cardiac arrest is not a heart attack, but a term used when a person’s heart stops beating. It can be due to a heart attack or occur as a primary event. Early detection of a heart attack can help prevent damage to the heart, brain and body. If you witness someone having these symptoms, or you feel them yourself, it’s important to call 911 and seek medical attention immediately. Comfort Keepers® Can Help Heart health becomes more important as we get older, and the trusted care team at Comfort Keepers can help. Our caregivers can remind clients to take medication, provide transportation to scheduled appointments, and support physician-prescribed exercise regimens and diets. Above all, our goal is to see that clients have the means to find the joy and happiness in each day, regardless of age or acuity. What Causes Hip Pain And How To Fix It by Ting Oh, PT, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers The hip can cause more pains than you know. Aside from causing a pain in the buttocks, outer thigh and groin, the hip can also be causing your low back or knee pain. So getting a good understanding of what causes hip pain and what can be done about it can go a long way in helping reduce pain not only in your hip but also potentially in your low back and knees. When looking at getting rid of hip pain, the first step is to find out what is causing the pain. There are many structures that can cause hip pain and utilizing diagnostic tools such as ultrasound imaging can be a quick and cost effective way to see if the problem is tendinitis, bursitis or a tear. Once we know what and how severe the problem is we have a much better chance of getting rid of it. When you know what tissue is injured and how severe it is, treatment can be a lot more effective. If we know your problem is a muscle/tendon tear, treatment would be targeted to healing the tissue vs strengthening. Stretching and strengthening will only

make the problem worse. New treatment techniques and technologies gives us the flexibility to choose treatments such as the Miracle Wave and Cold Laser so we can target the affected tissues and speed up the healing process. If you have hip pain and would like to know more about how to fix it, FYZICAL Hazleton is holding a Hip Pain Workshop on Saturday, November 14th @ 11am. At this Workshop, you will learn the top causes of hip pain, new advances in how to tell what

is causing your pain and new treatments that can help you get rid of hip pain. We will also be here to answer any questions you may have on your pain.
