The outbreak of COVID-19 has taken a toll on many people, families, and organizations around the world. In true 2020 fashion, this year is shaping up to be a unique one. With the holiday season now in full swing, it is more important than ever to keep our small businesses alive when tackling our shopping list. It is no secret that store closures and restrictions have impacted many small businesses in challenging ways. This pandemic has thrown one too many hurdles in the path of nearly every small business owner, constantly testing their ability to profitably adjust their business model and keep their passion alive month after month. While it is easy to feel powerless in times like this, there are things we can do to support our local businesses. Shop Online - After the ups and downs of 2020, more and more small businesses are offering online shopping options for their goods and services through their website, Facebook, via a phone call or through email. Online purchases are a great way to support local without leaving the comforts and safety of home! • Order Takeout or Delivery - Most restaurants have found a way to continue serving during this difficult time, and many have curbside pickup or even delivery options that they could not offer before. Now is the perfect time to order from your favorite restaurant, or to try somewhere new!

• Purchase Gift Cards – For those businesses who are truly struggling or unable to remain open, purchase a gift card now to use later. This will help bridge the cash-flow gap for those businesses. Purchase a future date night, shopping spree, or lunch with friends! Gift cards also make great stocking stuffers!! • Order Ahead – Make your transactions easier and less stressful by placing your order prior to arriving. This will shorten your exposure time and lessen the risk for everyone involved. • Buy Local – Many of the items you might typically buy in the big city or at the big box stores are available at your local shops as well. Buy local and support small business owners, the people who live in your neighborhood and know your name. They really appreciate it. • Write Good Reviews – Try to write 3 positive reviews of your favorite local businesses each week. Facebook, Google, and Yelp are all great sources to write reviews. • Utilize Social Media – Follow, Like, Share, Comment and spread the news of your local businesses to all your friends and followers! Giving them a shout-out goes a long way! • Stay Home – If you are feeling ill, have a cough, sore throat, fever, or runny nose… these are all signs that you should stay home. You will be helping businesses by ensuring their employees and other customers stay healthy.

These simple changes can go a long way in helping businesses improve cash flow, keep employees on payroll, or just to feel connected and boost morale. Every time you choose to support a local business versus a national business/franchise, you choose to support your friends and neighbors. Choosing a local business over a national business gives you the opportunity to put money back into your community and the people who call it home. It not only helps the business owner thrive, but it also gives the economy a chance to thrive, too… even beyond the pandemic. From the family and staff at Panorama, we wish everyone a Merry Christmas and a Safe, Healthy & Prosperous New Year!!!

—Larry Collum, CEO/Publisher I would like to personally congratulate all of our winners in “Panorama’s PrizeA-Palooza contest from the November issue. We had an overwhelming amount of contest entries and we are happy to announce that we gave away 30 gift cards which we purchased from local small businesses. If you missed out on this contest in November… no worries because there is another contest in this month’s issue with more gift cards to give away!! We have two other contest this month as well… “Stuff the Stocking” sponsored by the Laurel Mall and there is something fun for the kids this month…“Letters to Santa” sponsored by Frankie’s Pizzeria and Panorama Community Magazine. Make sure you enter to win!!!!

It’s been said so many ways, in so many languages – Happy Holidays! Let us add our sincerest wishes for a happy, healthy, and safe holiday season, and our thanks for your support and patronage through this past year. We look forward to serving you again in the coming year.

Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori Dumpster or No Dumpster? Dr. Lori’s Antiques Quiz by Dr. Lori Verderame When cleaning out grandma’s attic, are you making decisions based on memories, just guessing an object’s value as you go? When it comes to your valuable objects, would you recognize the treasures from the trash? My quiz game, “Dumpster or No Dumpster” will help you to use your antiques knowledge to determine whether you should throw something out or keep it. You may have already done this when you were downsizing, sorting out belongings during a heated divorce, settling your parents’ estate, or just cleaning out the clutter during the Covid 19 pandemic. So, do you know if you made the right choice about your stuff? Using my education and experience evaluating approximately 20,000 objects every year, many in homes like yours, my job is to research the market and provide accurate appraisals based on actual sales records where somebody paid cash, wrote a check, paid via ApplePay or PayPal, or swiped a credit card to buy an art, antique or collectible item. With an appraisal, my clients can make informed decisions about buying, selling, insuring, donating, or disposing of family heirlooms and other stuff. If you’ve read my columns over the years, watched me on TV, or attended my public appraisal events, then you know how fun it is to test your knowledge with the “Dumpster or No Dumpster” quiz. 1. Your family is cleaning out grandma’s house. Your brother in law wants to throw out grandma’s vintage Shiny Brite Christmas ornaments from the 1950s. Your sister in law wants to throw out grandpa’s Lionel train set. Who is making the bigger mistake by tossing a family heirloom? A. Brother in law who wants to toss the Christmas ornaments B. Sister in law who want to toss the Lionel train set C. Both brother in law and sister in law Answer: C. Both pieces headed to the dumpster could bring hundreds to thousands of dollars. For instance, if you sell the Christmas ornaments at prime holiday selling time, from November 1

They’s no place like LOCAL for the HOLIDAYS!

Shiny Brite boxed holiday ornaments. Photo Credit: Staff photographer, www. Spode holiday platter. Photo Credit: DrLoriV.com Staff photographer, www.DrLoriV.com

to January 1, you will do best to bring home a good return. And, you should list and sell each ornament individually on eBay.com, Etsy.com, or Rubylane.com highlighting its best attributes in your listing with a clear, closely cropped photograph. For a large collection of Christmas ornaments by Shiny Brite, Christopher Radko and other name brands, you can command several hundreds of dollars for them at holiday time when people are looking for ornaments that spark memories while decorating the tree. If you have a set in a box, value of all of them increases a little more by keeping them in the original box. Similarly, your sister in law probably doesn’t know that depending on the condition, pieces included in the set, gauge and rarity of the Lionel train set, it can be worth thousands when selling online. 2. In the purest definition of the word, which object has been patinated? A. A Bakelite bracelet B. A bronze sculpture of a Rudolph the RedNosed Reindeer Answer: B. Patina references the application of pigment on cast metal sculpture in a foundry environment when discussing sculpture. Knowing the vocabulary of antiques helps to properly identify what you have and find out, with an appraiser’s help, what it’s truly worth. 3. Mother is downsizing and moving to an active senior living community to be near some of her friends. Mother tells you and your sister to share the Spode holiday china service for 12 featuring the decorated holiday tree. Mother wants to be fair, so she splits up the Spode service evenly between you are your sis-

14 • Panorama Community Magazine December 2020

ter giving you six place settings and a few platters and serving pieces and giving your sister the same amount of place settings and a few platters and serving pieces. This seems fair but is this a good idea for long term value? A. It is never a good idea to split up sets B. It is fine to split up a set as long as it is split equally Answer: A. China sets should be kept intact to preserve value and condition. Keep sets in the same environment so they may age evenly over time. While it is difficult to choose who gets a beloved holiday set of china when it comes to family heirlooms, it is a good idea to gift one sister the entire holiday china set and give the other sister another family heirloom of similar value and equal family and sentimental importance. To make things fair, the sister who got the china service can be given the chore of always inviting the other sister over for holiday dinner! You stand to lose a lot of money when you play “Dumpster or No Dumpster” in your grandma’s attic without expert advice, so be sure to ask me if you need to know what goes into the Dumpster and what does not. Don’t just guess what’s valuable, play “Dumpster or No Dumpster” with me regularly on social media and youtube. Dr. Lori Verderame is the award-winning Ph.D. antiques appraiser on History channel’s #1 hit show about the world’s oldest treasure hunt, The Curse of Oak Island. Get Crafty This Year And Spread A Bunch Of Holiday Cheer

BPT) - Holiday decorations bring a smile to everyone's face, and this year, we could all use that now more than ever. Crafting seasonal décor instead of shopping for it gives you and your family something to occupy your extra time at home and helps you avoid big crowds and shopping stress. Perhaps you'll make wooden signs with jolly messages or metal snowflakes covered in lights? Or maybe you'll craft ornaments for the tree or engrave life-lasting messages into the menorah? No matter the craft, a homemade holiday novelty will bring a sense of pride and happiness to all. Ready to get crafty and holiday savvy? Here's what to do: • Make a plan. Visualize your project in your space and measure the location so you know how many supplies you need. Take a look around to notice what areas have the most room. Get a view from the outside to see what your neighbors will see when passing by. Browse social media/ decoration sites for inspiration. Save pictures of your favorites and then picture it fitting in your space. You could even sketch out your design on paper to get a clearer vision of what you're going

to create. Locate your sources of electricity if you want to incorporate lights, music or even snow machines (hey, we can dream!). Be sure you have extension cords if you'll need them. • Shop for materials. Shop for and select They’s noyour place like LOCAL the items that are eye-catching and fun. Confor the HOLIDAYS! sider bright, festive colors and pretty patterns. Research the items you need, and what stores near you carry them before you leave to save some time. Price check between stores to ensure you don't overspend. If possible, you can even order online supplies ahead of time to avoid the crowds. • Have the best tools in your tool belt. Equip yourself with tools that are lightweight, versatile, portable, user friendly and the very best to get the job done. The new MakerX line of tools from Worx will elevate your home-crafter game, giving you a range of creative options, allowing you to create from anywhere and perfecting the small details that make all the difference. The tool set revolves around a 20V Power Hub battery that powers five versatile tools, including an air brush, angle grinder, mini heat gun, rotary tool and wood and metal grinder, so the possibilities are limitless. Be sure to test out your tools on some scraps first before diving into your perfect materials and always follow safety measures and be careful when handling tools. • Set the mood. You've got everything you need so now it's time to start feeling festive. Light an

apple cinnamon, vanilla cookie, fir and firewood or whatever spiced-snow-scent-tickles-your-fancy candle, turn on the cold weather carols and get your groove on. Pour a cup of cocoa - or a glass of spiked cider for mom and dad - and get to work! • Kick back and admire your work. Enjoy the company of those around you as you work together to make your holiday crafts and see the beauty in creating something with your hands, regardless of the imperfections. Work any mistakes into your final design. After all, the experience is half the fun, and you're making memories that will last forever. HOURS FOR THE HOLIDAY SEASON!

Celebrate The Best Of The Season

(Family Features) If it seems like your grocery store's apple section is more abundant than it has been in the past, you'd be correct. With new apple varieties coming onto the scene every few years, gone are the days of choosing between simply red or green. Instead, choosing the right apple is similar to selecting the perfect wine. Apples can range from tart to sugary sweet, so finding the right balance for your palate is key. Consider an option like the Envy apple, which has been referred to as "the ultimate apple experience" for its consistently balanced, delightful sweetness coupled with a crisp, elegant crunch. They are an easy snack when eaten fresh

For more information, including recipes and entertaining tips, visit EnvyApple.com. Creating the Ultimate Charcuterie Board Stick to the basics this holiday season to create a perfect charcuterie board: • The board: Select a board big enough for your gathering but not too big as you want there to be overlap and crowding. • The cheeses: Select three different cheeses that complement the other items. Brie is a solid soft cheese choice while blue fills the need for a stronger, more pungent cheese. Try an aged cheddar or smoky gouda to round out the trio. • The meats: Something salty with a little fat, like prosciutto or speck, provides a flavorful addition to the board. • The produce: Choose fruits that not only taste great, but are also beautiful to display such as Envy apple slices, which stay whiter longer, making them ideal for any entertaining occasion. Plus their balanced sweetness pairs well with any item on the board. • The crackers: Variety is key with crackers, and like the cheeses, three types is typically the magic formula. Think water crackers, multi-grain wafers and breadsticks. • The snacks: Sweet and salty are king when it comes to snacks, so a mix of chocolate and nuts

works for many charcuterie boards. Home for the Holidays Traveling to visit friends and loved ones will likely be limited this year, so make this holiday season a time for cherishing traditions in new, different ways. Consider these ways to make apples part of the celebration: • Break out the webcam and challenge your siblings to a cross-country apple pie bake off. • Give a relish tray an upgrade with a sophisticated charcuterie board stacked with creamy gorgonzola cheese, salty caramel sauce, crunchy mixed nuts and crisp apple slices. Entertaining tip: Envy apples are a perfect addition to any holiday spread as their white flesh stays naturally whiter longer and resists the browning that sometimes shows with other apples. • Get transported from the comfort of your couch by watching one of Hallmark Channel's all-new original holiday movies, munching on apples as your movie-time snack. • Share the scents of the holidays with neighbors by crafting pomanders, which are fresh apples studded with whole cloves. • Fill decorative bowls with festive Envy apples, enclose in cellophane and gift them to friends and family member.

1/2 tsp. kosher salt 1 c. (2 sticks) butter, softened 1 c. granulated sugar 1 large egg 3/4 tsp. almond extract Red food coloring Sprinkles Directions: In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking powder, and salt. In a large bowl using a hand mixer (or in the bowl of a stand mixer, fitted with a paddle attachment), beat butter and sugar together. Add egg and beat until incorporated, then add extract. Add dry ingredients and beat until just combined. Divide dough in half, keeping one half in mixing bowl. Add red food coloring and mix until desired color is reached. Shape each dough into a square that is roughly ½” thick. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, about 30 minutes. Place red dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll into a rectangle that’s about 1/4" thick. Repeat with white dough. Take top sheet of parchment paper off of each dough. Place red dough on top of white dough, dough sides facing each other. Gently press on top of dough to help seal together. Remove top parchment paper and trim sides to match up evenly. Starting on a long side, use the bottom parchment paper to help roll dough tightly in to a log. Roll log on the counter a few times to help seal the edge. Wrap in plastic wrap and refrigerate until firm, at least 1 hour and up to overnight. Preheat oven to 350°. Line 2 large baking sheets with parchment paper. Place sprinkles on a medium plate. Using a sharp knife, slice cookies 1/2” thick and roll edges in sprinkles. Place on baking sheets 2” apart. Bake until edges are set and just starting to turn golden, 10 minutes. Makes 2 dozen

Valley Christmas Tree Event At SJM Auto Sales & Repair

Steve Martonick, owner of SJM Auto Sales And Repair, grew up in West Hazleton where they had a large Christmas tree that he admired as a kid. He later started his business in the Valley and also lived there with his own family. He always thought it would be a good idea to give back to the community by putting up a large tree at SJM for everyone to enjoy. Four years ago, he drove around the area looking for a tree that might be appropriate for his plan but also out of place at its current location. From there, he asked permission to remove it and got some area businesses to help with craning, cutting and transporting it to the SJM parking lot, where the hole was excavated and the tree was carefully placed and secured. The tree was then decorated with over 5000 lights and fun decorations! It has been an annual event ever since. In addition to the tree, Steve made SJM a Toys For Tots drop off. He plans an annual event with live reindeer, Santa Claus and refreshments to benefit that particular charity each year at Christmas time. Merry Christmas from the SJM Family!!

How To Spread Joy To Everyone From Anywhere This Holiday

(BPT) - COVID-19 restrictions mean the 2020 holiday season will be different this year, but that doesn't mean you have to become a Grinch. Although extensive travel, large group gatherings and many traditional activities can't happen, you can find imaginative ways to be just as joyful with a dash of creativity. In fact, many people are embracing this as an opportunity to take a unique approach and discover new ways to make one-of-a-kind memories with family, friends and coworkers. Alternative approaches to work holiday parties The culmination of the work year is the annual holiday celebration. This is typically a time to enjoy great food, fun games and cheers to a job well done. However, with the pandemic causing many offices to go remote as well as restrictions for restaurants and group gatherings, this year will have to be a celebration of a different kind. Fortunately, technology is making many things possible. Employers want to show employees they care and are expected to shake things up in creative ways. This could include sending meals

to everyone through home delivery and then meeting online to enjoy them together. This might be a video gathering for an ugly sweater contest paired with fun games that can be played digitally such bingo like and holiday trivia. Maybe They’s no as place LOCAL it's hiring a liveHOLIDAYS! musician to play and everyone for the can sign in for a virtual happy hour while enjoying the customized tunes. Might someone suggest karaoke?! Online shopping expected to soar Last year, 56% of consumers reported they would make their holiday purchases online vs. at retail stores, according to the National Retail Federation. The experts at Purchasing Power - an employee purchase program - have witnessed this trend growing exponentially since March and expect at-home shopping to soar over the upcoming holidays. With so many people continuing to work or attend school at home, Purchasing Power anticipates the most popular (and practical) gifts to be purchased and delivered right to people's doors include new laptops and home electronics, personal health and fitness equipment and ergonomic office furniture. Of course, toys, video games - there are many new products and gaming systems this year for kid and adult gamers - and small luxury items will still bring smiles to those longing for unexpected surprises during the 2020 holidays.

As you add the perfect touches to holiday treats, exchange memories of holidays past and even pull out old family photo albums or videos to reminisce. Make sure to enjoy a few treats together and take video stills to capture these special moments for future celebrations. Tire Inflation: Fill Your Tires With Nitrogen? by Thomas R. Buff Motorists are well aware of the fact that tires do need air from time to time. Tire inflation is a critical area when it comes to suspension, handling, traction and braking. We also cannot forget that inflation is also a major factor concerning tire wear. We all want our tires to last as long as possible. So, when our tires need air we go to the local gas station or auto shop and fill them with air or nitrogen. Why would we fill our tires with Nitrogen? Motorists have been using plain old oxygen, or simply air since the motor vehicle has used pneumatic (air) tires why change now?

Merry Christmas from Everyone at

Although tire pressure monitoring systems have now become standard on cars, a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration study found that only 57 percent of vehicles with monitoring systems had the correct pressure. Tire pressure is one of the most neglected safety items when it comes to maintenance. Small leaks in the tire can cause problems with steering, handling and even worse catastrophic failure. Nitrogen can help to keep inflation pressures within the proper ranges. Some local tire shops are beginning to offer nitrogen tire inflation, thus changing May the spirit of Christmas bring you and yours hope, happiness and love. the way we use to fill our tires. Tire experts claim that air, which is about one fifth oxygen, causes oxidation and corrosion. Oxygen is a very reactive element that when mixed with moisture can cause under inflation and deterioration of both the rubber compounds in the tire and the rim itself. They also claim that the minute oxygen molecules seep out of tires more easily causing a gradual loss of tire pressure. Experts in the tire industry indicate that oxidative aging is one of the primary causes of decreases in tire and rim life. Aluminum rims are most susceptible to rim deterioration and oxidation. Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas that has been used for many years to inflate airplane, military, and racecar tires. This gas has layer molecules than oxygen thus there is less chance of leakage. Tests have shown that if tires are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in tire failure due to under inflation thus tires last longer. The average pressure loss in an average tire is 2psi a month due to air molecules passing through the sidewalls of the tire. It is claimed that by using nitrogen wheel surfaces stay smooth and clean, because it doesn’t cause rust or corrosion. Nitrogen will not degrade the rubber seal in the valve core and will not cause deterioration of the tires rubber. It may take six months to lose 2psi with nitrogen compared to the one loss in tires filled with air. One of the most important reasons for using nitrogen in tires comes from the racecar industry. Water vapor absorbs and holds heat. When changes from liquid to vapor occur, water expands in volume. As a result, tires inflated with with air tend to run hotter and fluctuate in pressure due to the change in air molecules from liquid to vapor and back. Tires inflated with nitrogen have very little moisture inside so the tire runs cooler and thus becomes safer. This is why racecars utilize nitrogen in place of air. So if you want to minimize the loss of air pressure and thus keep your tires doing the job they are designed to do, that is, keep your vehicle on the road, consider the new alternative to plain old air. Nitrogen is a safe and effective way to maintain tire and rim life. Happy Motoring and stay healthy and safe.

2020 Tax Law Changes by Alice Horton, CEO, Honest Abe’s Taxes After last week’s training seminar for the upcoming season we wanted to share some important tax planning tips to taxpayers. All the legislation is not yet settled and in place but below are some of the known details. As many people drew unemployment it is critical that you take to your tax

preparer’s office the W2G that you get from the state that reflects your unemployment earnings and the withholding, if you elected withholding. The 1040 this year will break out the withholding from the 1099’s versus the W-2’s so it is clearer for people to see. Since many people cannot itemize any longer, but may try to and have charitable

contributions, there is a line on the tax return that will allow, at least for 2020, for taxpayers to claim up to $300 in charitable contributions even if the taxpayer is taking standard deduction on their return. Recovery Rebate Credit on the return is a section where you will record how much Stimulus you received, if you have your EIP letter you should take that in when you have your taxes prepared. If you received too much it is not, at this time, intended that you will have to pay it back, at least through the tax return. If you received too little, you will receive the additional with your 2020 filing as additional refund. For people who did not receive the stimulus check in 2019 and do not have to file a 2020 return they will need to file a return in 2020 to do the Recovery Rebate Credit process to get their stimulus money. We do not know what this process will look like at this time. Filing as Head of Household? HOT TOPIC! Delayed Refunds! Questions by the IRS for you to prove you are HOH and that you pay the bills and your dependent is yours! Problems with 2019 with the IRS? They rented Storage Units for MAIL! And they have yet to open and start to sort and process that mail! And, we have clients that mail sent to the PA Dept. of Revenue in Harrisburg March through August has had no response as well….COVID has everything backed up! Lastly, President-elect Biden’s tax plan, will raise corporate tax rates from 21% to 28%; it will increase the national debt by increasing Child Tax Credit from $2k to $3k per child for children under age 6; bring back the first time homebuyer credit; and other areas that overall are projected to raise taxes over $400,000. Jack McCloskey And Stan Novak: Parallel Great Basketball Careers by Rev. Connell A. McHugh Two men who had long careers in basketball as players, coaches and executives and who had strong connections with Northeastern Pennsylvania and are well known to area senior basketball fans are Jack McCloskey who was born in Mahanoy City and Stan Novak from Philadelphia who coached the most years in the Eastern Pro Basketball League and is the winingest coach in the history of Minor League Pro Basketball. McCloskey and Novak were teammates on the University of Pennsylvania basketball squad in the mid 1940s. I have a double-header program from February 5th, 1944 in which Penn

took on Columbia and St. Francis met St. Joseph’s at Convention Hall. The Penn roster included not only McCloskey and Novak but also Frank “Chink” Crossin of Luzerne, who not only starred in basketball but also became the Luzerne County Commissioner and Pat Shovlin who was a star for Freeland High. Stan Novak was all Ivy League in his Junior and Senior years. Jack McCloskey became a great scorer and was the MVP in the Eastern Pro Basketball League in both 1952-53 and 1953-54 campaigns. Frank Crossin also performed well in the Eastern League. Jack McCloskey was also a fine college football player.

46 • Panorama Community Magazine December 2020

McCloskey played for the Sunbury Mercuries in the 1952-53 and 1953-54 seasons, a team which Novak coached. At age 27 McCloskey played one game for the NBA Philadelphia Warriors in which he scored 6 points in a 16 minute run. McCloskey coached high school basketball and the Penn freshmen team before taking over as the head coach of his Alma Mater from 1956-66. He had a composite record of 146-105 including 7 straight winning seasons and giving Penn its first Ivy League title. McCloskey then took over the reins of Wake Forest where he was not as successful going 70-89. Jack McCloskey coached the NBA Portland Trailblazers in 1972 and 1973 to a combined 48-116 record. He resigned as coach in 1974 then became an assistant coach to Jerry West for the L.A.Lakers. When West became the Lakers’ General Manager in 1979, McCloskey felt he would be the Lakers next head coach, but he was not offered the job. However, in 1979 he became the General Manager of the Detroit Pistons which had only won 16 games the previous year. McCloskey kept the GM position until 1992 and was the architect of the Pistons NBA Championship teams of 1988-89 and 1989-90. Among the players he drafted were Joe Dumars, Dennis Rodman and Isaiah Thomas. He also acquired Bill Laimber and Rich Mahorn through trades. The team was nicknamed “The Bad Boys” because of their rugged style of play. McCloskey was also responsible for hiring future Hall of Fame Coach, Chuck Daly. Detroit made the Playoffs 9 consecutive times under McCloskey. Isaiah Thomas especially praised McCloskey for building up the Detroit franchise. Later McCloskey became the GM of the Minne-

sota Timberwolves from 1992-95 but they failed to make the Playoffs. McCloskey who died at the age of 91 played Minor League Pro Basketball for many different teams: the Hazleton Mountaineers and the Wilmington Blue Bombers in 1946-47, the Lancaster Red Roses in 1947-48, the Pottsville Packers in 1948-49, both the Cheltenham Aces and Pottsville Packers in 1950-51 and the Sunbury Mercuries from 1951-54. He was always among the League’s leading scorers. The Sunbury Mercuries likely had the best brain trust in the history of basketball on their roster. Their players included McCloskey, Jack Ramsay, the very successful St. Joseph’s coach who won NBA titles as a 76er GM and as the coach of the Portland Trailblazers and John Chaney who won 79% of his games as a 10 year coach of Cheyney State and over 500 games for Temple. Chaney played for the Hazleton Hawks for several years and was a good consistent scorer. Stan Novak, whom I knew personally, was an athlete, educator, NBA scouting director and a fine gentleman. Novak is in the Jewish Hall of Fame in Philadelphia. He was a star basketball player at West Philadelphia High School in the early 1940s. Like Jack McCloskey, Novak also coached the Penn freshmen team while attaining his Master’s Degree. While coaching in the Eastern League, he also coached Springfield High School to a 245-69 record from 1949-67. Novak coached for 18 years in the Eastern League and 12 years in the Continental Basketball league. He won 4 championships and was voted Coach of the Year 6 times. The Continental Basketball League coach of the Year Award was named after him. I best remember Stan as coach of the Sunbury Mercuries and the

Scranton Apollos. Novak coached 4 outstanding future coaches; Jim Boeheim, John Chaney, Jack McCloskey and Jack Ramsay. Novak was hired in 1980 as chief scout for the Detroit Pistons by his longtime friend Jack McCloskey, the GM of the team. Novak remained the chief scout of the Pistons until McCloskey left in 1992. He followed McCloskey to the Timberwolves and served as Minnesota’s Director of Scouting until his retirement in 1997. Novak was regarded as a very kind person who never looked for accolades. He always seemed to have a smile on his face. Stan Novak reminded me of longtime Hazleton coach, Frank Serany. Both had similar builds and although both were known for basketball, both players were better tennis players. I never got to play tennis with Serany, although my Dad, Connie was a good friend of his. My Father had Frank Serany string my racquets. I did play quite a bit of tennis with John Hildebrand, a fine player, who was a teammate of Serany in the State Championship years. Numerous people told me that Serany was the best tennis player of his era. Stan Novak was one of the best tennis players in Pennsylvania and won a ton of doubles tournaments with his son. I did play a couple of sets with Stan Novak at the Scranton Tennis Club when he

coached the Apollos. While not an over powering hitter, Novak had beautiful backhand and forehand strokes. Each ball he hit was about as far distant as possible from his opponent. Novak won each set against me though I at least took some games from him and did better than his basketball players and other club members. Stan Novak died of a stroke at age 82 in 2006. He is one of the game of basketball personages who made a very positive impression on me. Novak and McCloskey will always be linked together as astute students of basketball and lifelong friends. "While The World Shut Down" by Missy Nenstiel, Brandon’s Forever Home

We, like everyone else, I am sure have been looking back and reflecting on 2020. We are blessed to have maintained our health and are grateful to have been able to adapt to the ever-changing environment that COVID-19 has brought upon us. As a foundation we are proud to say that in the face of fear and uncertainty we did not close our doors to the most vulnerable in our community but welcomed nearly double our previous guest list for those in need. Back in March I think we all did not know what way to turn or how to move forward. Thankfully as a team we were able to come up with ways to stay functioning and still provide services to those who need

us. Our teen mentoring program became virtual, hosting our monthly meetings in group video chats with great presenters and food delivered to the doors of our participants. Our free shopping experience was by appointment only and socially distanced of course. Our public food distribution skyrocketed from serving around 45 local families to over 100 every week. On average, the families we provide food for have anywhere from 1-10 people (that’s 100s of those in need!). We began participating in the Hazleton Area School Lunch Program as a distribution site for district children to get meals every week. There were times we ran extremely low on hygiene items, clothing, or school supplies and our community pulled through to supplement. We even started a virtual parent support group lead by a licensed therapist to help families cope with quarantine. To say that we had to think on our toes and adapt promptly is an understatement!

48 • Panorama Community Magazine December 2020

What has been an amazing outcome of this past year is seeing our community partners lift us up when we needed the help to help others, watching our families unite virtually, and seeing that despite everything, we did not see a decline in people reaching out to us with interest in fostering and adoption. That is so important!! Right now, above all there are still children being neglected and abused. It is no fault of their own. There are still children without heat or proper clothes, without food or a proper family unit to care for them. If you have been considering fostering in the short term or for the long haul, please reach out to us. While the world may have shut down, we have not! Thank you to all who have already stepped forward to care for a child and thank you to every person who volunteered with us, donated food clothing or diapers, or sent monetary donations. We are all helping children in need together!

Technology Spending On A Tighter Budget (NAPSI)—Though the COVID-19 pandemic continues to shake the worldwide economy, with the right guidelines and continued social distancing, many Americans are cautiously optimistic about a better future. For now, however, personal and business budgets are still tight, and a number of people are looking for where they might be able to save a few extra dollars. One really good solution may come from a surprising place: your wireless service. Though wireless systems are more essential than ever for staying connected to jobs, friends and family, you could save money by switching to a new plan or operator. Here are hints on how: First, decide what you’re willing to pay for in a rate plan. There are monthly wireless plan options to fit just about every need. If you’re looking for the basics and don’t need extra services such as free Netflix or Disney+, or mobile hotspot data, you may be able to find a less expensive plan. There’s a reason some unlimited plans are more expensive than others—the extras add-up. Four things to consider when you’re looking to switch providers or plans: • Streaming services: Many plans today include free subscriptions to streaming services such as Netflix, Quibi, Hulu and Amazon Prime. If you’re already paying for a streaming service, then consider a wireless plan that includes your favorite. • Hotspot data: If your phone is your primary connection to the Internet, you may want a plan with hotspot data so you can connect your laptop or tablet. It can be an additional cost, but worth it if you have a specific need. • Rewards programs: If your wireless provider offers a rewards program, joining can help you score nice discounts or freebies—perhaps meals or movie rentals—to help keep some money in your pocket. • Taxes and Fees: Some providers, such as T-Mobile and Metro by T-Mobile, include taxes and fees in the plan price. This, users say, could mean saving an estimated $71.00 a year, per line. Next, look into prepaid options. If you’re seeking to switch and save, give another look to prepaid providers such as Metro by TMobile, Boost Mobile and Cricket. Those services all operate on nationwide networks, so the network service quality is on par with major carriers like T-Mobile or AT&T, but prices are generally less. Many prepaid providers also offer affordable or free device promotions to new customers, which can help keep your costs down. Finally, for further facts and tips, visit www.t-mobile.com.

Home Cleaning: Tips For Tackling Your Mess Nemesis (BPT) - You know it has to get done, but you just don't want to. It's been on the todo list for far too long. You may try to ignore it, dodge it or even cover it up. It's your mess nemesis - your least-favorite cleaning task - and you're dreading having to tackle it. While some people enjoy cleaning more than others, everyone can agree that not all cleaning tasks are created equal. In fact, 88%

of American adults have a least-favorite cleaning task, according to a new survey from the makers of the home cleaning brand CLR® (pronounced "CLeaR"). When asked to liken their least-favorite cleaning task to a person, 33% of Americans said it's like a scam caller. When asked to choose between activities, almost half (43%) would rather go to the dentist than handle their leastfavorite cleaning task.

Cleaning during quarantine Considering the COVID-19 pandemic and the extra time people are spending at home, messes are more frequent and can quickly become bothersome. The frequency of cleaning has increased for most Americans over the past several months, but Americans are, understandably, split on their level of cleaning productivity during this time: 53% have tackled a cleaning task they've been avoiding for years during the pandemic and 42% have avoided at least one cleaning task during the pandemic. Tips for conquering a mess nemesis Whether it's soap scum, mildew, rust, stinks, stains or spills, it's time to show your mess nemesis you mean business. Follow these tips to get the job done right: • Set a date: It's easy to keep avoiding tasks you loathe, so set a time for when you plan to focus on cleaning and be specific. For example, 10 a.m. Saturday you're finally giving the boot to that lime and calcium buildup on the shower door. Put on some cleaning clothes, play some motivational music and focus on getting the job done once and for all. • Stock ample supplies: Stock necessities such as sponges, scrubbers and rags before diving into any cleaning mission. Having the right supplies for the specific job makes tasks simpler. Use proper cleaning formulations for your task, such as the CLR line that has products designed to get rid of the grime in virtually every area of the home, from the kitchen and bathroom to the patio, garage and beyond. • Follow directions and use safer products: Always follow the directions on any product to ensure you get the results you want without making the mess worse or damaging the items. What's more, use products that clean effectively without unnecessary use of harsh chemicals. Many of the CLR products are approved by the EPA Safer Choice Program, meaning they're recognized as a safer alternative to traditional cleaning options that rely on the use of harsh chemicals to be effective, such as bleach. Look for the EPA Safer Choice label on the front of the product. • Rally the troops: Whether it's a big mess that requires multiple sets of hands or a tough mess that requires a few people strategizing, help can make a big difference. Even if you need to focus on the mess nemesis while other people handle regular household chores, this can keep things moving forward thanks to teamwork. Get your partner, spouse, kids or roommates in on the action.

3 Ways To Get The House You Want (NAPSI)—Over five million homes are sold in America every year, according to realtors. If you’d like one of them to be yours, there are a few facts you should know. In a perfect world, you’d fall in love with a new home, submit an offer, and have the seller accept it. The world, however, is rarely perfect. So how can you make your offer stand out when there’s competition for the home you want? Here are three hints that can help: 1. Shorten the timeline: Sellers want to move on. Offering a quick close lets them get to their own new home sooner and alleviates worries about the transaction falling through. Removing contingencies is a strategy to fasttrack the closing timeline. You can work with your agent to determine whether waiving contingencies is a good option in your situation. 2. Make a cash offer: Nothing appeals to sellers like cash. When you offer cash instead of getting a mortgage, you eliminate the time for the mortgage to close. You also remove the risk of the mortgage loan not going through. Don’t have the cash? There are still options. Companies such as Flyhomes make the cash offer on your behalf, close with the seller, then sell the home to you at the same price after your mortgage is finalized. That firm also supplies you with a Client Advisor who is your coach from start to finish. You’re supported by specialists for touring, research and more. Plus they’ll help you deal with title and escrow. 3. Find out why the seller is selling: A great real estate agent will tailor your offer to the seller’s goals. A seller who’s lived in a home for a long time is likely looking for a buyer who will cherish the home as much as they did. In that case, you might choose to write a letter to the seller to accompany your offer. On the other hand, the home may be owned by an investor, who will be most interested in selling to the buyer with the highest price and best terms. Tips For A Safe Holiday Celebration by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers The holiday season is upon us, which means that family gatherings and parties with friends are being planned to celebrate this joyous time of year. With a dramatic rise in COVID-19 cases nationwide, families have to make the tough decisions about the safest way to keep their senior loved ones safe, even if that means avoiding get-togethers with those not in the same household. Regardless, the holidays are going to take some additional planning and communication. For loved ones you aren't able to see in person, you should actively plan on ways to connect with them frequently to keep them - and you - feeling positive and uplifted during the holidays. Depression and feelings of social Isolation are already so common this time of year and will be exacerbated in 2020. Getting in the holiday spirit is important for our physical and mental wellbeing For in-person gatherings, The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) has provided recommendations to consider before you make any in-person commitments. According to CDC guidelines, you shouldn’t participate in in-person celebrations if you or anyone in your household: • Has been diagnosed with COVID-19 and has not met the criteria for when it is safe to be around others • Has symptoms of COVID-19 • Is waiting for COVID-19 viral test results • May have been exposed to someone with COVID-19 in the last 14 days • Is at increased risk of severe illness from COVID-19. This includes our senior loved ones Finding moments of joy and positivity every day gives us both connection and purpose in the midst of dealing with difficult times and conditions. Research conducted by Comfort Keepers found that that almost half (48%) of seniors surveyed say that family time is what they miss the most due to COVID. Think about ways to create that family time experience through frequent contact

even if you can't celebrate together in person. If in-person family gatherings are in your plans this holiday season, please keep in mind that many transmissions of the virus happen most often at extended family gatherings. While we, like you, would prefer family time to include hugs, sitting close at the dinner table and even holding hands, we should all be practicing safe distance protocols. The Center for Disease Control (CDC) offers these reminders if you are hosting an in-person family event: • Weather permitting, outdoor activities are

safer than indoor activities • Keep the invite list small and provide plenty of space • Requests that all guests arrive with and wear masks, provide hand sanitizer, and have easy access to tissues • If you are gathering includes people outside of your household, consider strictly avoiding contact with people outside of your household for 14-days before the gathering • Wash your hands frequently during the gathering, especially around meals It’s a good idea to share these considerations with family in advance, so that everyone feels a part of the decision and can prepare for a safe and fun gathering. Creating memories and sharing moments with the people we love help make the holiday season so special. Think about adjustments you can make so you can still celebrate the holidays in meaningful ways help keep everyone safe and healthy while bringing much needed joy to the ones we love. Here’s to safely making and sharing memories this holiday season!

Medications And Treatments For COVID-19 provided by Lehigh Valley Health Network Remdesivir is officially the first antiviral medication to be approved for treatment of COVID-19. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the drug at the end of October. Alex Benjamin, MD, with LVPG Infectious Diseases and Chief Infection Control and Prevention Officer at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN), answers about some common questions.

been clinically evaluated and determined to be protective or able to decrease the chance of complications from COVID-19. However, having good health before coming in contact with the virus is important. Vitamin D is known to decrease inflammation, and zinc can help your immune system fight viruses. These supplements could be beneficial, but we don’t have clinical evidence of that yet. It’s important to not miss your annual physical exams with a primary care provider. Your provider will be able to give you guidance based on your health needs. Also, remember to keep up the COVID-19 safety measures you already know: Wash your hands often, wear a mask, social distance and stay home if you feel sick.

How does the approval of remdesivir impact patients? LVHN hospitals participated in the clinical trial for remdesivir, so not much will change for our patients. While the drug was in the clinical trial, we had to ask the manufacturer (Gilead) for approval to administer the treatment before offering it to any patient. visit. Not only is it convenient, virtual care helps reduce the chance of spreading viruses to others. A provider will let you know if a COVID-19 test is required and next steps. If you receive a positive COVID-19 test, over-the-counter medications may help you treat your symptoms – including sore throat, upset stomach, headache and chest tightness. What treatments are used in the hospital, and who is eligible to receive them? In addition to remdesivir, patients can receive treatments through LVHN participation in clinical studies. These trials allow patients to access treatments that they might not otherwise have access to. Although these treatments are still being evaluated, they are available to anyone who needs them through what’s known as ‘compassionate use.’ Compassionate use allows people who have a life-threatening disease or condition to gain access to an investigational medical treatment. • Dexamethasone – Dexamethasone is a steroid or an anti-inflammatory drug that can be given

system creates antibodies to fight the virus. Those who have completely recovered from COVID-19 may have immune-boosting antibodies in their plasma – called ‘convalescent plasma’– that could be used to treat critically ill COVID-19 patients. This provides a boost to the immune system of the sick patient and may help speed the recovery process. • Selinexor – Selinexor is currently approved at higher doses by the FDA as a treatment for patients with relapsed or refractory multiple

myeloma (cancer of white blood cells). Selinexor is what’s known as a selective inhibitor of nuclear transport, or SINE, in cells. It’s been shown that COVID-19’s ability to replicate is impaired when nuclear transport is blocked. Animal models suggest some significant reduction in viral replication. If you are experiencing symptoms that may be contagious, call the LVHN Nurse Hotline at 888-402-LVHN for next steps.

How To Stay Injury Free by John Degenhart, DC A 51-year-old woman came in with right hip pain that is worsening for seven months. She said , “I do stretches every day”. A 47-year-old man came in with left back pain going down his leg and the heat and stretches he is getting at PT is making it worse. A 17-year-old basketball player came in with lower back pain and spasms that are getting worse with basketball season. Let’s discuss what all these cases have in common, what a common mistake I see many people making. Exercise physiologist, Tom Holland, for the past 30 years has done 30 marathons, 25 triathlons, and multiple ultramarathons. Here is his key to avoiding injury. “I don’t subscribe to the saying ‘No pain, no gain’. I listen to my body, if I feel a twinge or a little pain, I stop what I am doing. Pushing through pain is how small issues become major injuries.” Wow, what amazing advice that is! So, what the three people with injuries above have in common, is what? They feel a pain, so they are still stretching and exercising, and their pains are getting worse. What should

they do? Stop stretching, stop exercising, that body part, apply ice, not heat, and listen to their body. If your knee has a twinge, ice and rest it, do upper body exercises. What do you think I hear in my office all day? I hear people saying how their trainer at the gym, or their coach, or their PT says, “No pain, no gain”. They are being pushed to exercise in spite of their pain. Their pain worsens, so who is their last resort—the chiropractor. Like Tom Holland, I tell them to stop exercising, apply ice, and let the injury heal. I know athletes don’t want to miss games or lose practice time, but they must learn to be in tune with the magnificent body. To stay injury-free, the body will talk to you. Even mentally, if you are pushing too hard in life, you need to listen to your body, give it a rest, and go back refreshed and healthy and hit even bigger goals. Usually improper alignment is why an injury isn’t healing. To stay injury-free I would add, get in alignment.

Mechanical Motion Therapy Is A Game Changer by Dr. Scott D. Ungemach, De Jesus Family Chiropractic MMT is a new therapy that is a combination of instrument technology coupled with simultaneous patient-assisted specific postures and movements. This dual-motion therapy is the guiding principle of MMT. It affects muscles, ligaments, joints, and the nervous system. During MMT, the patient, moves in a specific motion pattern while the specialist directs the instrument in a prescribed manner. The Pro-Soft 360 computer system directs the right amount of tension and force upon the tissues as the treatment is applied. Most commonly, musculoskeletal pain is linked to a dysfunction in muscle, ligament, joint capsule, or fascia (the connective tissue of the body). Each of these tissues contains specialized sensory receptors which sense or “tell” the nervous system to react in a protected or guarded manner. Unchecked, this leads to pain, inflammation, and limitations in motion and/or flexibility. As these

tissues’ “lock” the injured body part into a position to avoid pain, these same tissues can shorten and at times, form scar tissue, making the problem worsen over time. Mechanical Motion Therapy can have a powerful, pain relieving effect on the tissues containing the specialized receptors, even in instances where it has been present for years. MMT affects the sensation of pain by

altering the patient’s pain threshold. In other words, it decreases the negative effect of these pain receptors while gaining increased motion, improved balance, and flexibility as a result. Research has shown that 80% of the population suffers from pain and inflammation that limits the ability to do everything from the basics of everyday life, such as getting dressed without pain, to being forced to avoid or limit social activities with friends and family. Finally, there is a proven technology available to change lives for the better. At De Jesus Family Chiropractic, we are proud to be the first in NEPA to offer this amazing technology. If you or a loved one suffer from chronic pain or balance issues, please give us a call at 570 708-2228, and set up your free consultation to find out if MMT can help with your condition.

Health And Well-Being: Making Diet Decisions During A Pandemic (NAPSI)—Dreadful as the pandemic has been, for some people it has meant a positive health change. Three in 10 Americans made a major change to their diet during this time, according to new research. As with most changes, the big question always lingers—will the changes last? The study suggests they may well. Seven in 10 of those respondents said their new diet has lasted longer because they did it during the ongoing pan¬demic, versus if they made the change at another time. What the Study Showed Conducted by OnePoll on behalf of Herbalife Nutrition, the survey looked at specific changes respondents made. Of Americans surveyed, 47% started eating more plant-based foods, while 54% started eating more fruits and vegetables—and 43% made an effort to eat less meat. Results also found that a third of American respondents cut out or ate less sugar, and 39% cut down on the number of

treats they ate. Why the Choice to Change Now? For many respondents, it was because they had extra time on their hands. In fact, fifty-three percent said they had more time to research healthier foods, while 51% said they had time to cook more and learn new recipes. In addition, 40% said they were away from such negative influences as office snacks, while 37% wanted to use this time to make a positive change. A third made the change to accommodate their loved ones. For nearly one in four the cost of meat was the cause, and for another quarter, it was on the advice of a healthcare professional. “There is never a bad time to make a positive change in your lifestyle, especially when those changes lead to lasting, healthy results,” said Dr. Kent Bradley, Chief Health and Nutrition Officer, Herbalife Nutrition. “During this pan¬demic it appears more in-

dividuals are choosing quality nutrient-dense sources like those found in a plant-based diet.” When asked about their current diets, 75% said they eat meat while 18% identified as “flexitarians,” and the rest were vegan or vegetarian. Yet plant-based diets might be on the rise: 61% of respondents said they’d like to incorporate more plant-based foods into their diet, but they aren’t sure where to begin. The survey also found 40% of American respondents are more open-minded about plant-based foods and “meatless meat” options during the pandemic. In a similar survey conducted last year, half of respondents were more open-minded about plant-based foods and “meatless meat” and 70 percent believed meatless meat would continue to grow in popularity. Bradley added, “I commend all those who are empowering themselves in the midst of this pandemic and have found a way to create new healthy habits.”

News For Noses (NAPSI)—Nasal congestion is nothing to sneeze at. It affects roughly 20 percent of the population and is associated with reduced quality of life, difficulty sleeping, reduced daytime performance, and increased need for healthcare. In addition to the physical misery, it is estimated the annual financial impact of chronic congestion is more than $5 to $10 billion. Fortunately, scientists are coming up with new and better ways to deal with the problem. New Device That’s good news since, until recently, most of the current treatments for nasal congestion and season allergies were drugs that must be regularly ingested in the form of nasal sprays (decongestants or steroids), pills (decongestants or antihistamines) or uncomfortable nasal irrigators. Each of these has its own side effects and risks. In addition, current treatments provide only partial or temporary relief. Fortunately, there’s a new patented device that uses a combination of acoustic vibrations, and gentle, resistant pressure to help open nasal breathing and relieve nasal congestion, naturally—in as little as three minutes. Called SinuSonic, it consists of a fully disposable medical-grade silicone nosepiece on a resin body. A flutter valve on top creates gentle, self-guided oscillating expiratory resistance. A recent study published in the prestigious International Forum of Allergy and Rhinology (IFAR)—the official journal of the American Rhinologic Society (ARS) and the American Academy of Otolaryngic Allergy (AAOA)—found the relief from chronic nasal congestion can be life changing. Eighty percent of participants enjoyed a clinically relevant improvement. Doctor’s Opinion “We were excited to see measurable positive changes in both objective nasal airflow as well as patient-reported symptom scores and quality of life,” said Dr. Rodney Schlosser, an internationally known sinus specialist and one of the lead researchers on the study. “Our initial results demonstrate that SinuSonic is a safe and effective treatment alternative to conventional pharmacologic and surgical treatment for these patients.” Learn More To see the device in action or purchase online, go to www.SinuSonic.com.

Don’t Let COVID Restrictions Cause A Pain In Your Neck by Ting Oh, PT, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers COVID restrictions are making us stay home more resulting in increased use of computers, tablets and phones. This increased use of technology, looking down at a screen and staying still for long periods is causing an increase in neck pains. This is known as Tech or Text Neck. Pain from Tech neck can be very limiting, cause headaches and in the worst cases, cause tingling, numbness and weakness in the arms. Understanding this can go a long way in keeping it manageable and stop it before it gets really bad. When working or playing on tech screens, we are often hunched, over looking down. This position places our head forward of our shoulders which makes our muscles work overtime to hold it up. Our head weighs around 10-12lbs but when it is in the texting position our head exerts a 60lb force on the neck muscles. Add to this the fact we are now spending sometimes all day on computer devices, our necks and shoulders are taking a lot of stress. Over time this can lead to neck strain, muscle spasms and eventually arthritis. So how do we combat this? One solution would be to unplug and spend less time on devices. Short of doing this, we can be more aware of our head position and be sure to hold our devices up higher so we don’t have to look down. For every 10 degrees we stop leaning forward, we take around 10lbs of weight off our muscles. Also be sure to take breaks from our devices every 20-30 minutes and stretch our necks and shoulders. This can relieve the muscle strain. When neck pains get bad, one of the

Dermatologist Drug Store Picks by Stephen Schleicher, MD. I read with interest an article published on the website purewow entitled: “These Are the Best Drugstore Skin Care Products, According to a Dermatologist”. The dermatologist practices in Houston and all products are said to cost under $30. I can’t quibble with most of her choices, which follow along with copy from the site and my comments. • CERAVE HYDRATING FACIAL CLEANSER: “this CeraVe cleanser is nonirritating and non-drying, and removes all traces of makeup. Oh, and for what it’s worth, it’s also fragrance-free”. Agree, a very good product. • NEUTROGENA ALCOHOL-FREE TONER: “Post-cleansing, a toner restores hydration and rebalances your skin’s pH levels, making it easier to absorb serums and creams. This one doesn’t cause any irritation, making it an excellent option for those with sensitive skin.” I’m not big on toners and see no use for them. • DIFFERIN GEL 0.1%: “This stuff used to be available only by prescription but is now sold over the counter……(it) has two effects: unclogging pores and repairing previous sun damage, which causes fine lines and wrinkles. Because it’s so strong, you only need to use a pea-sized amount for your entire face—and shouldn’t use it around your eyes.” Agree. Excellent, cost-effective product to treat mild to moderate acne. Might work for wrinkles too. • ROC CORREXION EYE CREAM: “For something that is eye-safe……… this affordable eye cream is formulated for sensitive eyes and contains retinol to help correct fine lines and wrinkles.” Lot’s of retinol products out there; no idea how this one stacks up against others. • LAROCHE POSAY ANTHELIOS ULTRA-LIGHT FLUID FACIAL SUNSCREEN SPF 60: “This one absorbs quickly without leaving any chalky residue behind”. Highly rated by Consumer Reports but a bit expensive when compared to other sunscreens. Coppertone and the CVS brand are about onethird the price.

If your doctor has ordered diagnostic imaging for you, it is because he or she feels that it is important. We realize that everyone is worried about the Coronavirus and we want you to know that we are working hard to keep you and our staff safe and healthy. Our staff members wash or sanitize their hands and disinfect the equipment between each patient. We are also practicing social distancing wherever possible and in order to maintain a safe environment, we are screening staff and patients. It is important to know that we are not allowing any staff members or patients who have symptoms or who have been exposed to someone with suspected Coronavirus symptoms into our facility. By providing a stress-free experience, offering a less-expensive option, and having a team of experienced and friendly staff, we are truly able to provide the service, atmosphere, and overall experience the patients deserve. Say Goodbye To 2020 But Not Your 2020 Dental Benefits by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. I think I speak for all of us when I say that we are all hoping 2021 brings us healthier times in our world. 2020 has been a trying and challenging year for all of us. We want you to know that we are here for you and available to meet your dental needs and maximize your dental benefits and FSA for the remainder of the year. Were you aware that by utilizing

your dental insurance benefits before the end of the year, you could save hundreds if not thousands of dollars? Most dental insurances run based upon a calendar year. If this holds true for your dental insurance the following are six reasons to put this magazine down and pick up the phone to schedule a dental appointment immediately. 1) By deferring dental treatment and avoiding

your dental visit, you are at high risk of more advanced and costly dental expenses as time progresses. Today’s cavity, if left untreated, will result in tomorrow’s root canal and crown. 2) If you pay for your dental insurance on a monthly basis, you should use your benefit package to your own advantage. If you do not require dental treatment, I encourage all of my patients to keep up with their regular, routine dental cleanings and examinations in an effort to early detection and intervention of any potential dental issue. 3) Chances are you have already met or exceeded your annual deductible for your dental insurance. This being said, why not get as much of your required work done in order to maximize your dental benefits as your deductible starts all over again in January of the new year. 4) Your annual benefit maximum is the most money that your insurance will allow you to utilize annually. This amount varies from insurance carrier to insurance carrier with the average being $1,000 per year. If you have not fully utilized your benefits for the year, the remainder does not roll-over into the following year. Rather, it is removed from your annual benefit package and is unable to be utilized by you, the insured. 5) Due to the rising costs of dentistry and healthcare in general, annual fee increases are necessary and occur most commonly on January 1 of every year. This will result in more out-of-pocket expense to you and may make your copay increase accordingly. 6) If you participate in a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) you must utilize the pre-tax dollars you have contributed by the end of the year or you forfeit the amount. Many patients use FSA money for their dental care. As part of our continued commitment to providing our patients with exceptional dental care, we wish to ensure them that they receive all the benefits to which they are entitled. So why not visit your dentist now and start the New Year off with a healthy smile? On behalf of myself and my staff, we wish you and your family a Merry Christmas and a Happy and Healthy New Year.
