How Small Businesses Can Successfully Stay Connected As I sit back and reflect on 2020…. it has been interesting to say the least and a year like no other! From politics to the pandemic and everything that fell in between, I am certain that I speak for all when I say, “I am looking forward to celebrating a New Year of hope and brighter times ahead.” These trying times have taught us to be grateful and to remain positive even when feeling overwhelmed and wishing things were different. While the pandemic brought on many challenges, it also presented us with the opportunity to get ourselves out of our comfort zones and try new ways of working, playing, educating, and interacting with our family and friends virtually. We are thankful for every single day we have and for what life

has to offer. Thank you to all the first responders, front line, essential and non-essential workers for all your hard work and dedication… You are greatly appreciated! We are resilient people! We can rebuild and remake a better America and leave the problems of 2020 behind us but, it is going to take great effort from every one of us to make it happen. Please join me by embracing the New Year as a New Beginning…. Goodbye 2020! Hello 2021!

(NAPSI)—According to the Small Business Administration, there are some 30 million small businesses in America. Lately, too many of them have been beset by big problems. Good News Fortunately, there’s one thing companies can count on: quality, reliable broadband. Businessservicesconnect.com is helping small businesses rise to the challenge with multi-location business networks, reliable business internet, voice, video and local support whenever and wherever they need it. Here’s how: • Their networks, your gain. They work with local broadband companies that own and operate their own networks. That means your small business traffic flows over modern, ultra-reliable data and communications networks your provider builds, operates and maintains. And that means more reliability and more accountability. • They’re as local as it gets. Those logo-ized vans and vehicles are living proof that these companies operate right in your market, with service, support and on-the-street technicians who live and work where you do business. No provider is more aligned with your marketplace. • They deliver. Published service guarantees, 24x7 support and local agents are some of the reasons they’re growing fast in the business category, with customers that run the gamut from small, solo offices to large, multisite enterprises. • Low-priced packages. You can bundle various combinations of business voice, Internet and television services for signifcant savings. • What you want, they’ve got. Pneumonia In Seniors: Causes, Treatments, And Prevention by Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers There are many benefits that come with getting older, but there are also factors to be aware of when it comes to our health and wellness. As we age our body’s natural defenses become less reliable and as a result, seniors are more susceptible to infection - including pneumonia. Pneumonia is an infection that affects one or both lungs and can range from mild to severe. For some, pneumonia can be fatal. Older people have a higher risk of getting pneumonia and are more likely to die from it if they do. For US seniors, hospitalization for pneumonia has a greater risk of death compared to any of the other top 10 reasons for hospitalization. The additional steps that older adults take to protect their health can have long-lasting physical and mental effects. And staying healthy is the best way for seniors to continue living the highest quality of life. Why Pneumonia is More Common in Seniors • Changes to the lungs as we age. Because of changes to the respiratory system that happen with age, seniors can't always effectively clear secretions as well from their lungs. Those secretions can go down into

bronchial tubes, causing the infection. • Weakened immune systems. A senior’s immune system has a harder time fighting off infection. And, some health issues can an even greater negative effect on a senior’s ability to fight off an infection – issues like an organ or bone marrow transplant, chemotherapy (treatment for cancer), or longterm steroid use. • Senior health conditions. Diabetes, Parkinson's disease, chemotherapy, and HIV put seniors at a higher risk for pneumonia, as well as cystic fibrosis, asthma, COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease), and bronchiectasis. Surgery can also expose seniors to infections that can lead to pneumonia. Signs of Pneumonia Symptoms can include coughing, fever, chills, shortness of breath, chest pain, green or yellow sputum that comes up during coughing, fatigue, and the sudden worsening of a cold or the flu. Pneumonia Treatments Typically, a physician will do a chest X-ray and/or blood test to determine if a senior has pneumonia. Bacterial pneumonia, it is usually treated with antibiotics. If the infection is viral, an anti-viral medicine may be prescribed. In addition to medication, doctors may give the patient fluids, oxygen, pain relief and medical support. Reducing the Risk of Pneumonia in Seniors Seniors should discuss pneumonia prevention with their physician to determine the best plan. Some options to help reduce the risk of pneumonia include: • Get vaccinated. All people over age 65 should get an annual flu shot, as well as a pneumococcal vaccine, a one-time shot that protects against the pneumococcus, or pneumonia bacteria. • Practice good hygiene. Wash hands regularly or use an alcoholbased hand sanitizer. • Don’t Smoke or Take Steps to Quit. Smoking negatively impacts just about everything in our bodies, but the lungs obviously receive a significant amount of damage. Those who smoke are at a greater overall risk of pneumonia because the lungs’ defense mechanisms become compromised. • Practice a Healthy Lifestyle. Seniors should follow a physicianapproved diet and exercise regimen. This will help bolster their immune system and reduce the risk of pneumonia. Comfort Keepers® Can Help Whether senior clients are recovering from pneumonia or looking to protect themselves, the trusted care team at Comfort Keepers® can help. Our caregivers remind clients to take medication, provide transportation to scheduled appointments, and support physician-prescribed exercise regimens and diets. Above all, our goal is to see that clients have the means to find the joy and happiness in each day, regardless of age or acuity. Why It Is Important To Start Saving For Retirement, Despite Your Age (NAPSI)—The COVID-19 pandemic has impacted Americans in more ways than one. With the ups and downs the market has experienced since the start of the pandemic, it’s important that working Americans understand their various Preparing for your future is possible financial and retirement even during a pandemic—and easier and more important than ever. planning options. According to a recent survey from the Center for a Secure Retirement and Bankers Life, more than half (54%) of working adults say their retirement planning has taken a hit amid the COVID-19 pandemic, with more than a third (36%) having lost money in the stock market. Whether you’re 25, 35 or 45, it’s never too early—or late—to start financially planning for retirement. Additional insight from the Center for Secure Retirement shows that nearly two-thirds (63%) of those age 35 to 44 reported that the pandemic has impacted their future retirement, compared to just one-third (35%) of those 65 and older. A moment of upheaval like that experienced amid COVID-19—which has been particularly felt by those reliant on employer sponsored plans like a 401(K)—represents an opportunity for the next generation of retirees to review their options and ensure their financial security. Here are smart actions to take • Stay calm. The uncertainty of the market can cause panic for some. Financial planning experts advise that the best thing you can do is to refrain from impulsive decisions. Stay calm and avoid any emotional or risky moves when it comes to large investments. • Reevaluate. Even for those who may feel confident in their retirement planning, it is important to continually reevaluate as you receive new information during the pandemic. It can be tempting to focus on short term gains at the expense of long-term plans. • Be flexible. It may even be beneficial to schedule reviews of your retirement plans several times over the course of the year, as the state of the world is everchanging. Continuously revisiting and adjusting your plans will ensure that you are prepared for the future no matter what it may bring. • Supplement savings. Consider including life insurance as part of your retirement plan to supplement your savings and provide peace of mind for you and your loved ones. Although life during a pandemic is uncertain and difficult to navigate, by seeking help to better understand your financial plans and current health care coverage, you’ll be more prepared to anticipate unforeseen situations in the future.

LVH Hazleton Announces New Vitalchoice Seniors, Take Program For People Ages 60 Plus Steps To Better provided by Lehigh Valley Health Network Eye Health In 2021

(BPT) - January is Glaucoma Awareness Month, a great opportunity to spread the word about a disease that affects more than 3 million people in the United States. Since glaucoma often strikes without symptoms and can cause significant vision loss before a person notices changes in their eyesight, it's critical to learn what you can do to protect your eyes. Taking steps to protect your vision is more challenging this year because of the continued impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on our daily lives. January is also typically a time of flux in health insurance coverage with plan changes, deductible and co-pay resets, and prescription plan updates. However, despite these challenges, protecting your vision should remain a priority. Here are three things you can do to take control of your eye health this month: 1. Schedule an annual eye exam 2. Maintain your current eye care plan 3. Understand your treatment options

Long-Term Care Planning Made Easy: Find A Plan That’s Right For You (NAPSI)—You may already be aware of what long-term care is, whether it’s through personal experience caregiving for a loved one who needs daily assistance, or knowing a family member or friend who requires more support as they age. As you learn more about long term care, consider the possibility that you may need this type of care in the future and start planning for it today. Did you know that 70% percent1 of Americans older than age 65 will need long term care at some point in their lives? This means personal care and other related services provided on an extended basis to people who need help with everyday activities or supervision due to a severe cognitive impairment, such as Alzheimer’s disease. Because long term care is not typically covered by health or other types of traditional insurance, it’s most often provided at home by adult children, other family members, and friends. Caregiving can be stressful, and often takes a toll on a caregiver’s health and well-being. For this reason, you may want to research standalone long term care insurance like the coverage that is offered under the Federal

Long Term Care Insurance Program (FLTCIP). Designed specifically for the federal family, the FLTCIP provides insurance coverage that reimburses for long term care in places like a nursing home, an assisted living facility, or at home. Purchasing coverage under the FLTCIP may help to protect your savings and assets as well as remain independent in the event you ever need long term care. Build a FLTCIP plan There’s no one-size-fits-all when it comes to long term care insurance, and it’s no secret that planning for your future care can be overwhelming. The FLTCIP’s new Guided Planner was designed to simplify the process of building a FLTCIP plan that’s right for you. When choosing a plan, consider the role your family may play in providing your care, the cost of care where you live or plan to retire, and how your coverage may contribute to your broader financial goals. The Guided Planner will guide you through these key considerations: • Cost of care: Compare the national average cost of long term care with other locations in the

United States. You can choose where you live, or plan to retire. • Care options: Learn more about different care options, such as home care, assisted living facilities, and nursing homes, as well as the associated costs. • Inflation protection: Understand the impact of inflation on the cost of care over time and see examples of how the FLTCIP’s inflation protection options can help. The FLTCIP Guided Planner will help you build a plan based on three benefit choices. These, along with your age, will help you determine your coverage and premium: • daily benefit amount • benefit period • inflation protection Visit LTCFEDS.com to learn more about the Guided Planner and build a plan that’s right for you. The Federal Long Term Care Insurance Program is sponsored by the U.S. Office of Personnel Management, insured by John Hancock Life & Health Insurance Company, under a group long-term care insurance policy, and administered by Long Term Care Partners, LLC.

This New App Is A Grandparent’s Best Friend (NAPSI)—Here’s good news for America’s approximately 70 million grandparents: A growing problem that has been bugging families since the advent of the digital photo revolution—“Where is the latest photo of my grandchild?”—may have a surprising solution thanks to two enterprising granddads, Silicon Valley alumni. Vinnie Jones and Boyd Pearce put their heads together and designed a simple, free and user-friendly mobile app that lets families share and re-live at will their daily experiences, as well as special moments with loved ones even thousands of miles apart. Called My Grandkids, it works with a simple click or two of a button. Explains Pearce, formerly with IBM, Teradata and Hitachi, “Vinnie and I decided to take what we called the Ph.D approach (Press Here Dummy). We wanted to design an application that solved the photo problem but in a simple, easy way.” Jones, who worked with Pearce at Teradata, said, “My wife and I became

Age With Style And Grace (Family Features) Aging may be inevitable, but with advancement in research and technology, there are plenty of ways you can slow, or even reverse, the hands of time to stay healthy and promote longevity. Consider these ideas from Longevity Labs+, a company dedicated to cutting-edge aging research and the makers of spermidineLIFE, a first-of-its kind, clinically studied supplement containing natural spermidine, which renews cells and can reverse the signs of aging: • Protect Your Skin—Not only does your skin protect vital internal organs, it's an essential barrier to intruders like bacteria and other infection-causing microbes. The skin is also the body's greatest tool in managing hydration levels and providing critical cues to your nervous system about things like temperature and pain. With such a big role in your overall health and well-being, the skin often shows the first signs of aging. Wrinkles and age spots are often indicators of a person's true age. However, you can reduce the visible impacts of aging on the skin

with daily care. Regularly moisturizing helps keep skin supple, and diligent sunscreen application year-around can protect your skin from damaging sun rays. Some compounds and nutrient plans can help nurture youthful skin. It's also important to closely monitor your skin for changes, especially changes to moles or other spots that may be signs of skin cancer, which is generally treatable when caught and managed early. In addition, collagen peptides and a spermidine-rich diet can be key in ensuring healthy skin into your later years. • Maintain Clean and Healthy Cells—You may not realize it, but as each day passes, your body's cells age, die and accumulate toxic matter, which disrupts cellular function and causes a myriad of age-related diseases such as dementia and cardiovascular disease as well as decreases immune function. However, a compound naturally produced by the body and found in nature called spermidine can clean cells of toxic matter so they can operate with renewed youth and efficiency. Spermidine triggers a cellular renewal process called autophagy, which

allows cells to shed layers of waste and regenerate instead of slowing down and dying off. As the body ages, natural levels of spermidine decline, cellular regeneration slows and signs of aging are accelerated. Spermidine is a key to anti-aging and is believed to help reduce the onset of neurodegenerative and age-related diseases. You can boost spermidine levels by eating certain foods that are high in spermidine, like lentils, soybeans, mushrooms, aged cheese, pears, broccoli, peas and cauliflower. However, few people eat enough spermidine-rich foods to maintain optimal levels in their later years. Taking a supplement like award-winning spermidineLIFE* can support cellular renewal and help cells stay young and healthy. The first and only clinically studied spermidine supplement in the world, it includes spermidine naturally extracted from European non-GMO wheat

germ along with carefully selected vitamins, minerals and healthy fats. • Manage Physical Health—As you grow older, your metabolism slows, making it easier to hold onto extra weight. Excess pounds are associated with numerous health risks, in addition to slowing you down overall. Maintain a more youthful body and mobility by consuming a well-rounded, nutritious, whole-food diet and committing to regular exercise, which can help not only banish extra calories but also keep your muscle tone strong, your balance steady and your posture straight. Just as important as what you do to protect your health as you age is what you don't do. That means limiting alcohol, quitting smoking and avoiding the temptation to indulge in high-fat and sugary foods. • Support Mind Matters—Worry lines aren't just wrinkles that come with age; they can be a sign of persistent angst. From stress to lack of sleep to slips in memory, there are plenty of reasons to focus on your mental health as you advance in years. Getting enough rest can play a big role in your physical health as well as your mental wellness. Too little sleep prevents your body from reenergizing itself fully and can affect your cognition and mood. Worry and stress can also cause you to feel your years. Information is key, and smart devices such as heart rate and sleep trackers can provide you with the necessary information to find what helps and what hurts healthy circadian rhythms and deep, regenerative sleep.Growing forgetful as you age is also common to an extent, but memory problems can be exacerbated by stress, lack of sleep and other factors. You can also keep your mind sharp by playing games, doing puzzles, reading and maintaining an active and engaging social life with others. Even during this pandemic, phone and video calls can help engage your mental state through important social activity. Find more ideas for navigating your later years with grace at spermidinelife.us.

Welcome To Hazleton & Vision Imaging: Proudly Serving Our Communities With Premium, Cutting Edge Imagining Services by “Kelly Ricko, Hazleton Imaging Hazleton Imaging has been serving patients in the area since 2001 and will continue providing the same service for many years to come. If your doctor has ordered diagnostic imaging for you, it is because he or she feels that it is important. We realize that everyone is worried about the Coronavirus and we want you to know that we are working hard to keep you and our staff safe and healthy. Our staff members wash or sanitize their hands and disinfect the equipment between each patient. We are also practicing social distancing wherever possible and in order to maintain a safe environment, we are screening staff and patients. It is important to know that we are not allowing any staff members or patients who have symptoms or who have been exposed to someone with suspected Coronavirus symptoms into our facility. If you have a fever, a cough, or are experiencing shortness of breath, let us know and we will be happy to reschedule your appointment. We are staying up to date on the current situation as it evolves and adjusting accordingly. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time.

We are fully accredited by the ACR. The concept of Hazleton Imaging was created by a group of local Radiologists with the sole purpose of providing unparalleled service and quality to the patients & physicians of the Wyoming Valley. These physicians earned the respect by the local clinicians as the elite providers of Radiology interpretation in the area at one of the regional hospital facilities. From this, the concept of Hazleton Imaging, a full service, first class Diagnostic Imaging Center was conceived. A few years later, in 2004, our second location Vision Imaging in Kingston, PA was opened under the same concept. Our mission has always been and continues to be – Providing Excellence & Compassion! We provide patients a better alternative from hospitals for their imaging needs. By providing a stress-free experience, offering a less-expensive option, and having a team of experienced and friendly staff, we are truly able to provide the service, atmosphere, and overall experience the patients deserve. 6 Tips To Lower Your Out-Of-Pocket Medication Costs In January (BPT) - January 2021 is here! Whether or not you stay up to mark the new year, an expensive reality hits many Americans on Jan. 1: medical insurance deductibles reset to zero and out-of-pocket costs go up. Along with co-pays and coinsurance, those out-of-pocket costs can put essential medications out of reach. Many people are forced to choose between paying bills, their medications, and putting food on the table. It's no wonder Gallup polls consistently find healthcare costs to be one of this country's greatest worries. But there are ways to cut those high out-of-pocket costs. The Patient Access Network (PAN) Foundation, a national charity that provides financial assistance to help people pay for their prescription medications, offers these tips for reducing your out-of-pocket costs for the lifesaving medications you need. • Talk to your healthcare team. Be honest with your doctor and pharmacist about the challenge of affording your medications. It may be difficult for you to talk about your finances, but remember, your healthcare team is on your side. Let them know what you can afford and they

may be able to tailor a treatment plan that fits within your budget. • Look into 'Extra Help.' Medicare beneficiaries may qualify for programs like, Extra Help, also known as the Low-Income Subsidy program. This program can significantly reduce your prescription costs. • Ask for generics. Many name-brand drugs now have generic equivalents, especially if the drugs you're taking have been on the market for a while. Generics are significantly cheaper than their name-brand versions. And don't worry. Generics are run through the same safety and efficacy tests by the FDA to ensure their quality and effectiveness. • Sign up for FundFinder. FundFinder is a free web-based app developed by the PAN Foundation that connects you with a charitable patient assistance foundation that could help pay the out-of-pocket costs for your prescription medications. Rather than having to monitor multiple foundations to see if they're offering funding, FundFinder checks for you and alerts you through email or text when the financial help that you need is available at PAN or another

charitable foundation. • Shop around. You'd be surprised how much drug costs can vary from pharmacy to pharmacy. Make a few calls to make sure you're not paying more than you have to for the medications you need. And ask about discounts and coupons, like the NeedyMeds discount card, which could help you save up to 80% off prescription drug prices. • Check your state's assistance programs. Many states have assistance programs for residents who are having trouble paying for their medications. The first place to start is with your state's department of health. They can tell you about the programs that are available and whether you qualify. They also may have information about other programs in your area that are designed to help people afford their medication. The new year should be full of hope, not worries about affording prescription medications. You can learn more about patient assistance charities like PAN and the ways you can get help paying for your prescription medical treatments at panfoundation.org.

Your Annual “Tax Prep Fee Investment Dollars” by Alice Horton, CEO, Honest Abe’s Taxes Most of us have learned to compare prices for what we pay for food, insurance, cars, etc. ; to find the best value and long term investment of our income; to make our dollars stretch as far as they can; when do we apply that same process to tax preparation fees? Honest Abe’s Tax Offices has always charged reasonable fees for planning and preparation and is open year round. They welcome all customers. Quit wasting your hard earned dollars elsewhere; let their staff show you that they care! Filing your Income Tax Return is actually a reconciliation of your year’s income, deductions, and tax payments. The end result of the reconciliation determines if you have a refund from overpayment of taxes or even from refundable credits granted to you because of the circumstances of your year, income, and/or family circumstances. Have you ever considered that filing taxes is reconciliation? Since it is reconciliation then it means you should be able to do some planning and have some idea of what the end picture will look like, correct? Really,

it is a simple process. Most franchise tax offices serve you to prepare and file your taxes; they open during “tax season” to work with tax payers. Smaller, private tax offices are open year end and many of them offer “tax planning” as well as preparation. When you come in for taxes, you should be coming in primarily for tax planning, and secondarily for tax preparation. A good tax preparer is there to help you for the whole year which is upcoming, not just for the year that has just finished. Why are you paying for the past when you need to be prepared for the future? And especially, why are you paying premium dollars for the past? Honest Abe’s Tax Offices has and will continue to charge REASONABLE fees for PLANNING and PREPARATION and is open year round. They welcome all customers. Come see them today. 5 Expert Tips To Save Money At The Grocery Store (BPT) - Parents are struggling to provide for their families during these uncertain and challenging times. A recent survey conducted by the Brookings Institution finds 1 in 5 young children in the U.S. are not getting enough food during this pandemic, and food insecurity is rising at an unprecedented rate. Financial expert and author Tonya Rapley has a few savvy tips to help families

tweak their grocery-store routine to reduce spending: 1. Cut out convenience costs. When shopping for foods such as meat, fruits and vegetables, you pay a premium for pre-cut and specialty items. Although it can seem tempting to grab pre-cut ingredients like chicken breasts to incorporate into family meals, purchasing the whole chicken can offer multiple meal opportunities while

reducing costs. Same goes for produce, such as chopped fruit, trimmed veggies and prepacked foods like salads and sandwiches. You'll save a lot and likely get more food by doing the prep work at home. 2. Try a flexitarian diet. Meat is often the most expensive item in a family's shopping cart. By experimenting with a flexitarian diet, you can cut down on grocery spending and instill healthy eating habits in children. By making a meatless meal a couple of times a week, parents can introduce a variety of foods and ingredients to their kids that will expand their taste preferences. You can start simple by skipping meatballs on spaghetti night or using beans instead of meat on taco Tuesday. Then get kids involved in trying new recipes together and expand your meatless dish collection. 3. Keep your head up, then down when scanning shelves. The most popularly marketed foods are stored at eye level and typically have higher prices than less-known name brands or store-brand alternatives. Your best bet is to look at the higher and lower shelves, as that's where the most cost-effective products are located. A little effort to look beyond eye level will reward you with a lower grocery bill. 4. Choose store-brand infant formula. For parents with infants at home, switching to storebrand infant formula can cut costs by up to 50%, resulting in $900 in annual savings. Store-brand infant formulas offer the same complete nutrition and meet the same FDA standards as bigname brands. Faced with financial stress, some parents may be tempted to make homemade formula or add extra water to stretch formula to save money. These actions can have a harmful effect on baby, so keep an eye out for a store-brand alternative at the grocery store instead to ensure your infant is obtaining the essential nutrients he or she needs to grow and stay healthy. Learn more at www.storebrandformula.com. 5. Use coupons and shop the sales. When you enter a store, pick up the weekly flyer if one is available and flip through the coupons and sales. This can help you save money on the items on your list. As you shop, watch for shelf advertisements for sales or bargains like buy one get one free (BOGO). Keep in mind, grocery stores often advertise savings based on multiple purchases. For example, save $3 on two. Unless it specifically states you must buy two to earn the savings, you can still save money when you just buy one item. Smart grocery shopping can help you save during the pandemic and at any time. Your family will get the food they enjoy, and you get to stay on budget, perhaps with a little extra to put into savings.

Art & Antiques by Dr. Lori Online Selling In The Age Of Covid -19 by Dr. Lori Verderame When you think of eBay.com, Etsy. com, Rubylane.com, Facebook marketplace, Chairish.com, and other sites for online selling, you probably think about electronics, toys, kitchen items, jewelry, paintings, magazines, clothes, doorknobs, bikes, celebrity autographs, and just about everything—old or new--else! Working or non-working condition doesn’t even matter when it comes to selling stuff online. Many people are selling online and I’m showing them how to do it with instructional videos about how to spot a valuable work of art or antique and how to turn something old into something outstanding. Two things that the recent, albeit horrible, pandemic has accomplished in our culture are making all of us more comfortable with video conferencing technology like Zoom, WebEx, What’sApp and Google Duo among many, many others. More of us are talking to our friends and family from home via tablet or smartphone. I’m spending many days each week offering guidance on heirlooms and valuables with video call appraisals to clients all over the world from Allentown, Pennsylvania to Perth, Australia. The second thing that the pandemic has prompted is an opportunity to be at home for a long period of time and to clean out the clutter. During this time at home, we’ve descended into our basements, ascended up to the attics, looked in the backyard sheds, dug deep into the garages passed the bikes and unlocked the off-site storage lockers in an effort to sift through all the stuff. Much of what we have found as we assumed the role of household archeologists has been a variety of things from lots of different people and places and from all

different time periods. Grandma’s flower sifter, castanets from a high school band trip to Spain, your husband’s little league baseball glove are just some of the stuff that has been uncovered during the self-quarantine period ushered in by the Coronavirus, a.k.a., Covid- 19. What have we found? We found stuff that we want to donate, trash, or sell. We ask ourselves, should I trash it? Our sustainable side says can’t someone use it. Where can we donate it: Goodwill? Salvation Army? Church sale? Synagogue auction? There are lots of places where we can get rid of our stuff but what about making a little money from this unwanted stuff? How can we sell it? On our front lawn is an option but no one gets a great return on a yard sale. The best thing about a yard sale is the space you get in the house from the stuff that went out to the front yard. But you can buy something at a yard sale and resell it online for a nice profit. This is a Benjamin Harrison presidential china plate from the White House service dating to 1892. It was purchased at a yard sale by a client of mine, let’s call her Judy, for $1. She sent me a photo of it so I could identify it for her and I told her what it was and how to sell it online. She did sell it online for a nice profit. She sold it for $1,000 with my help! Amazing. And you can do it too. Now do you want to know more about selling your stuff online? Here comes more good news. The new technological comfort zone that we have all experienced from the Coronavirus quarantine and virtual home-schooling has made many of us more comfortable with new methods to sell stuff including art, antiques, and collectibles online. So, it’s time to get out your smart phone camera, snap some clear and

tightly cropped photos of that old toaster or gently played with My Little Pony doll, watch my instructional youtube videos about spotting valuables and selling and listing your treasures online. How do you know what items will be of interest to buyers on the secondary or resale market? Most people know that items like paintings, sculptures, antiques, collectibles, and jewelry have value but did you know that sports cards, non-working electronics, and last year’s clothes also have value in the online marketplace. Even pieces of other items can have value as craft materials or parts for workshop tinkerers will buy such stuff. Knitting needles and a bag of yarn that isn’t quite enough for a bedroom afghan can even be sold online. What looks like junk may be saleable. Even the everyday stuff like a Tinkerbell pillow sham, that wrong color foundation makeup that you never returned to the store or used garden tools are sold in the online marketplace. Sure, the prices may not make you rich but it is still more money than you had when that object was just taking up space in the linen closet or sitting on a shelf in the backyard shed. My Mother used to say pennies make dollars and that’s the way you can learn to take something that looks like trash and turn it into cash. Repurposers, those talented people who can take an outdated bedroom armoire that once housed a huge 1990s era tv set and make it into a trendy coffee station for the kitchen/family room with some chalk paint, new hardware, and artistic design skills, have been doing this for centuries. When it comes to selling online look for quality and use my tips to start selling for profit. Dr. Lori Verderame is the award-winning Ph.D. antiques appraiser on History channel’s #1 show, The Curse of Oak Island, about the world’s oldest treasure hunt. Dr. Lori offers free information about antiques appraisals and selling at www.DrLoriV. com and www.YouTube.com/DrLoriV

Working Daughters Deserve Support (NAPSI)—For the approximate 23 million women who balance caring for an aging parent with going to work, and often raising children of their own, there is little recognition and not enough support. These women themselves often don’t think of what they do as caregiving; they just consider themselves dutiful daughters. Yet they average 24.4 hours of unpaid care a week, from buying groceries, to managing medication, helping with household chores, assisting their parents with bathing and dressing, and driving to appointments. Many are even providing complex medical tasks, with little or no training, such as administering injections, monitoring vital signs, caring for wounds or cleaning feeding tubes. Collectively, they provide $470 billion in unpaid care, according to the AARP. Often, these women provide this care at great cost to their careers. Working daughters, much like working mothers, may need to switch to a less demanding job, take time off or quit work altogether. They lose wages and job-related benefits costing them, on average, $304,000 in lost wages and benefits while spending nearly 20 percent of their own income on caregiving. To give these unsung heroes recognition and much needed support, it’s important to make the care they give compatible with their careers. With 10,000 people turning 65 every day in the United States, the caregiving workforce is only going to grow. Smart businesses must examine policies and corporate cultures to create environments where caregivers can thrive. Working daughters need flexibility, paid family leave policies and expanding eligibility requirements. They need affordable, quality eldercare options.

Smart Move: Speed Test Your Internet (NAPSI)— These days, most families would agree, home Internet connectivity and reliable speed are more important than ever. Think about it: How much longer will it take for the kids’ new game to download? Do you have enough bandwidth for your 10 AM video conference? As more American households work, shop, learn, stream and game— often simultaneously—on multiple devices, making sure at-home Internet is reliable and speedy and uninterrupted is a must. The free Smart Move Internet Speed Test tool will track your Internet speed in realtime in seconds. You’ll be able to determine what your current Internet speed means and what fits your needs, learn about common issues that may cause the Internet to slow down and discover simple ways to optimize your Internet speed. Get the speed test now at www. smartmove.us/speedtest. Speed Test Tips Things you should consider before running your speed test: 1. Internet speed changes throughout the day. Test your speed multiple times for clear results. 2. Run the speed test in the same room and in clear sight of your router for the most accurate result. 3. Complete downloads on all connected de-

vices prior to running the test. How it Works The test finds your location and closest server. Next, it pings the server, measuring the round-trip response time and tests the time it takes to capture sample data and the network resources used in that capture. It will detect additional rooms and increases the number of open connections to download data, measuring how much your Internet connection can accomplish simultaneously (remember that 10 AM video conference and video game download speed we discussed earlier?). Finally, it processes your upload capacity, measuring the speed of data uploads from your Internet device to the test server. (BPT) - Quality smartphones come in all configurations and price points these days. Here are some of the key things you'll want to look for to make sure you find one that works best for your needs. Happy shopping! • Operating system (OS): There are two different operating systems to choose from. iOS works with iPhones, while Android operates with a wider variety of smartphones, like those from Samsung or Motorola. In general, iOS is considered easier to use, but you need to have an Apple device. Android gives you more options, plus the ability to customize it with third-party software and widgets. • Camera: Most people now use their phones as their primary camera, so the right selection here will be an especially important one. More and more smartphones boast cameras with at least 12 mega-pixels, so don't go by only that stat. Instead, focus on individual camera specs and special features like dual lenses or the ability to edit and enhance photos. • Screen size: Get the right size screen for the things you'll want to do. Buy a phone with a screen smaller than 5.5 inches if one-hand use is important to you or if you have smaller hands. Get a bigger-screen phone if you like to watch a lot of videos or play games, or simply want to have an easier time navigating on your touchscreen. • Display: You're going to spend many hours gazing at the screen, so make sure it offers the viewing experience you're after. If you plan to watch a lot of videos, look for a minimum of full HD (high definition), which is 1920 x 1080 pixels. You'll also want to familiarize yourself with some of the underlying technologies: LCD, OLED, and AMOLED are all terms you'll see used, and each offers a different range of advantages. • Design: Determining good smartphone design is purely subjective. Many people prefer a metal

or glass design; others, plastic. If you're concerned about durability, look for a phone that is water-resistant. A handful of phones also now feature a shatterproof glass display, and many include a Gorilla Glass display to protect it against short drops (a protective case will help with that, too). • Processor: Even midrange phones now offer satisfactory performance for nearly any user level or basic task. A good processor inside a phone will translate to faster open times for apps, smoother navigation and quicker photo editing. • Battery: Many factors, including the screen size, processor and operating system, determine how long a smartphone lasts on a charge. A decent benchmark is to look for a smartphone with a battery capacity of at least 3,000 mAh. Any phone that lasts longer than 9 hours of straight 4G LTE use is considered very good. • Storage: Go for as much internal storage as possible. Some apps and games can easily take up more than 1GB of storage, and most smartphone owners capture and store large numbers of high-res photos and videos. While some models offer just 8GB or 16GB, the minimum on premium handsets these days is usually anywhere from 32GB-64GB. Adding a microSD card will also help expand your storage. It's available on many Android phones, some of which can accommodate 1TB or more. • Price: Don't pay for more than you need. The latest iPhone and premium Android phones start around $800, and can easily run $1,000 or more. But there are great options below $500, and even some solid choices for well under $200. • Carrier: A smartphone requires a wireless plan. Choose a service provider that offers what you'll really use, and at a price that suits your budget. Consumer Cellular, for example, offers a wide variety of smartphone choices from entry level to top of the line, along with talk, text and data plans for as low as $20 a month, with no contract. Let today's top technology work for you! It's a very competitive marketplace, so by shopping wisely, you're sure to find a smartphone that keeps you happily connected at a great price.

Digatherm Technology At West Hazleton Vet!

Make Sense of Doggy Dental Care

by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital The Digatherm technology measures the radiated energy from the tissue. The difference in radiated energy is measured by temperature and color associated with change. The high-resolution camera and software can detect changes of less than 0.020C- that’s 20 times more sensitive than your fingers at detecting small changes in heat and 10 times more sensitive to detect cold. Various color palates help us to visualize the changes as heat and cold is conducted to the surface of the body. Hotter areas depict inflammation whilst cooler areas show a lack of circulation. Family Features) Dental care for dogs is important, but it's an aspect of care that is frequently overlooked by dog owners. One of the few outward signs of dental problems lurking just below the surface is bad breath. According to the American Veterinary Dental College, periodontal disease is the most common clinical dental condition occurring in adult dogs. However, it is preventable with consistent home dental care and regular vet visits. Knowing there's a problem with your pet's mouth starts by understanding what a healthy dog's mouth should look like. Teeth should be intact (not jagged or broken) and free of plaque and tartar buildup. Tongues should be moist without any lumps or cuts and gums should be salmon pink, though some dogs naturally have black or black and pink gums. Making sure you are aware of what your pet's mouth typically looks like and talking to your vet if you spot any issues can go a long way toward protecting your furry friend. Also consider this advice from veterinarian and host of Animal Planet's "Evan Goes Wild" Dr. Evan Antin to help keep your dog's teeth healthy and his or her breath fresh: • See your vet regularly. When visiting your veterinarian for a regular check-up, make sure he or she checks your dog's teeth. Your vet can evaluate your dog's mouth, teeth and gums and identify any trouble spots. • Brushing is best. Ideally, that means brushing your dog's teeth daily, but that's not realistic for all dog owners. If you're brushing at home, start slow and make sure it's a positive experience. First, introduce dog-specific toothpaste with your finger and progress to a toothbrush once your pet becomes comfortable. Your vet can also brush your dog's teeth if you're having trouble. • Treat and play with purpose. Functional chews and toys can be both enjoyable for your dog and provide a healthy benefit as easy options to help with dental upkeep. • Use crunchy kibbles. Dry, crunchy foods can be helpful. As your dog chews, particles from the dry food scrape against his or her teeth, acting like a toothbrush to help reduce tartar buildup • Watch for warning signs. Persistent bad breath, red gums and changes in behavior or eating habits can all be signs of dental problems. If you notice any of these signs, make an appointment to see your veterinarian. To learn more about protecting your dog's dental health, visit purina.com/ dentalife and consult with your veterinarian.

Foster Is A Verb! by Missy Nenstiel, Brandon’s Forever Home

The word foster means to encourage or promote the development of something. It’s an action that we all do on a day to day basis from caring for our own families, pets, houseplants, projects, even careers! The list goes on and on. What does it take to be a foster parent? Commitment, understanding, and love. The same characteristics that you possess to accomplish everything else in your day! The term “foster” is typically used to describe a child or a family. It’s a word that might invoke feelings of judgement or stigmas that simply put, are false! Yes, it is true that there are foster children and foster families, many of whom you might know through school, work, your community or even your family. These children have fallen into this circumstance due to no fault of their own and

these families are putting in the effort to give them the best life possible. People are interested in becoming a foster parent for many reasons. Some have been inspired by something they’ve seen in the media, some are previous foster children and want to give back, while others simply have an open heart. Just as there are many different reasons people want to foster there are many different ways they can become involved. Children find themselves being removed from their biological family for a multitude of reasons, all of which are not the fault of the child. These children are loving, observant, and willing to be a part of a family who is eager to show them kindness and acceptance. The act of fostering a child or group of children is one that not only provides so much for the child but for the foster family as well. Typically, foster families can accept children on a few different terms. One of which is through kinship. Kinship is usually a family member like a grandparent, aunt or

uncle, taking in a child while the biological parents work towards family reunification. Traditional foster families can accept children in various ways. This would be based on emergency placements which can be for just a few days or a weekend until family or a long-term foster family is located, long term fostering which sounds just like it is described or fostering to adopt. Fostering to adopt is for a family interested in caring for the child as part of their own family indefinitely. Whichever way an individual or family is interested in helping children, there is a path for them to follow! Foster families are like any other. Just like children are all ages, races, partner preferences, and backgrounds, diverse foster families are all around us! If you are interested in learning more about how you can help local children contact us at Brandon’s Forever Home. We are here to help guide you on your journey, wherever that may go and to be a resource for you should you become an approved foster home.

Protecting Teen Drivers Through Technology by Thomas R. Buff There may be no bigger worry for parents than the time their teens get behind the wheel of a motor vehicle. More and more vehicles are on the road, the increase in distracted driving and many other factors send parent’s anxiety levels through the roof when their kids finally pass their driving test, and for good reason. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration the risk of motor vehicle crashes is higher among 16- 19 year old’s than any other age group. In fact, teen drivers are nearly three more times likely than drivers aged 20 and older to be involved in a serious crash. Alcohol use, speeding, not wearing seatbelts, and distracted driving are the leading causes of these teen accidents. The good news is that technology is now available that are beginning to drop these numbers. Car manufactures are roll-

ing out systems that will help keep your teen safer when driving. In fact, since 2012 traffic related fatalities among teens have declined by 48 percent and that number is dropping. There are now a number of options available to help keep teen drivers away from the most common hazards when driving. In 2016, many manufactures such as Ford and Chevrolet ramped up the teen driving technology. Fords MyKey system provides settings that can allow parents to enforce safe driving habits such a safety belt minder that will chime and also mute speakers until the belt is latched. The system has speed cutoffs and in vehicle driving reports so parents can check on their teens driving performance. Chevrolet added similar options that track the driving habits of a driver. Theses systems, when prompted will display a “report card” that can be viewed to track driving habits of the driver at any time. • GPS Vehicle Tracking and Notifications Systems—There are many cell phone carriers who offer phone-based location services

that utilize the devices Global tracking capabilities. These systems use location services to track where the vehicle is at a particular time. For an extra charge you can set up a “virtual fence” that uses real world geography to send email alerts once the driver goes beyond the parameters set. As a parent you can actually set up “arrival” and “departure” alerts that will notify you when your teen leaves one point or arrives at another. Some phone-based services will also track and estimate how fast the vehicle is traveling. • Real Time Camera and Video—A few companies are now offering in car monitoring devices. These sneaky little cameras are placed behind the rearview mirrors. The camera films the driver and records events such as erratic driving and or speeding. The camera can actually alert the driver through the use of flashing lights that change color when a driving error occurs. The driving episode can be taped so the parents can review with their teen to assist in recognizing mistakes. Automobile manufacturers have been using technology to help parents with the task of enforcing driving rules. Fords My Key program became standard on most models back in 2010. This program allows parents to set parameters including radio settings and Bluetooth usage. A parent can set a Do Not Disturb Feature which will block all incoming calls and texts from a Blue Toothed paired device. Drivers can use the voice activated device but texting and cellular will be blocked. Other manufactures incorporate nifty devices that can notify a parent if the vehicle goes beyond a predetermined speed or only allow the radio to play at a set level. One system will alert the parent via text, email or phone if the vehicle is being driven past a predetermined hour. There are many devices available, too numerous to mention that can aid in the driving education of our new drivers. All are features that can help save lives. When you are purchasing a new vehicle, research what is available as safety features. Technology is constantly changing so keeping track of the new features can be difficult. But today’s technology gives us the opportunity to provide safe driving options that gives us some piece of mind but most importantly keeps our teen drivers and all motorists safer behind the wheel. Stay healthy and safe! Happy New Year and Happy Motoring!

5 Tips For Winter Travelers (Family Features) Because of the pandemic, fewer Americans are taking to the skies, but a significant number likely plan to hit the roads to visit friends and family during the winter months. Whether a few towns over or a couple states away, many drivers will travel interstates, which are major logistics corridors often dominated by commercial trucks. According to the United States Census Bureau, there are approximately 3.5 million people working as truck drivers in the U.S. From keeping grocery store shelves stocked to delivering those next-day packages, professional truck drivers impact lives with the freight they move and serve an important role in keeping the economy running. Professional truck drivers are also experts when it comes to planning travel. From mapping out a route to maintaining their vehicles and even practicing a healthy diet, many truck drivers are road trip experts. Caron Comas is a professional truck driver for Variant, a subsidiary of U.S. Xpress, one of the nation's largest trucking companies. Highly trained, she's driven trucks for 17 years and her expert insight can aid the average automobile driver planning to hit the roads this winter. "It's important that the average driver give trucks plenty of space on the road," Comas said. "People can forget we're generally handling 75 feet of tractor and trailer, which can weigh 80,000 pounds. We can't stop on a dime like automobiles, so increase

distance when merging in front of trucks and avoid slamming on your brakes." Comas suggests following these tips on the road and before you travel: • Don't follow trucks too closely. If you can't see a tractor trailer's mirrors, the driver can't see you. • Schedule vehicle maintenance before your trip. Have your oil changed and ask the experts to check your tire pressure and other important fluids to help assure you're driving safely and efficiently. • Carefully plan your route. If driving through big cities, consider fluctuations in rush hour traffic. For more remote locations where there may not be regular food or gas, plan for when you'll need to stop along the

route. • Stay hydrated and nourished. Before setting out, eat a healthy meal and drink plenty of water. For the drive, pack healthy, non-perishable snacks like granola, fruit or nuts along with bottled water. For longer trips with kids, consider a small cooler for sandwiches, string cheese or yogurt. • Be overly prepared. Keep a few blankets, a flashlight, a first-aid kit and an extra pair of shoes in your car. If you experience car trouble, make sure you can stay warm until help arrives. Keep in mind the global pandemic. Check each state's quarantine requirements that you'll be traveling to or through, wear a mask when in public and follow the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's guidelines when traveling. Health Effects Of Indoor Air Quality On Families by The Experts at S.J. Kowalski During the COVID-19 pandemic, families have spent more time than ever inside their homes. Especially since our children are being home-schooled and doing on-line classes and zoom learning. Therefore it is important that our indoor environments are fully supportive of our health and wellbeing. Air pollution has been linked to serious conditions such as cancer, asthma, and cardiovascular diseases. The health impact of the air in our homes needs to be taken seriously. Although COVID-19 has not been proven to be transmitted by HVAC systems, there is increasing concern about virus particles remaining airborne long enough to infect people nearby, under some conditions. If that is true, then presumably particles could enter an air distribution system. The good news is, as a homeowner the most important thing you can

do is have regular HVAC maintenance done by a professional and change your filters often. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), indoor environments are 2-5 times as polluted as the outdoors, and occasionally up to 100 times as polluted. The EPA has ranked indoor air pollution, as one of the top 5 environmental dangers facing our planet. Research has proven there is a link between indoor pollution and children’s respiratory health in 80% of the cases researched. We are especially proud to offer the Air Scrubber by Aerus with UV and Photocatalytic oxidation technology. Here are the benefits: • Reduces exposure to common bacteria & viruses and their health effects • Effective against MRSA, E.coli, & other illness causing bacteria & viruses

• Helps with allergies, asthma, and other respiratory problems • Helps protect against the spread of deadly bacteria & viruses • Removes VOC’s (Airborne chemical compounds) and Formaldehyde from the air Air scrubbers are used by mold remediation specialists, renovation companies, and on job sites to help improve the surrounding air quality. They were even used in the Pentagon after 9/11 to clean and purify the air. Air scrubbers don’t just treat the air; they also help to clean the surfaces of your home, such as countertops, bathrooms, kitchens, and doorknobs. The Air Scrubber is a quick and easy installation designed to fit into your existing HVAC system. Call S.J. Kowalski, Inc. at 570-4552600 or visit our website at sjkowalski.com to learn more about the Air Scrubber by Aerus.

3 Healthy Home Projects To Improve Indoor Environmental Quality (BPT) - How healthy is your house? After spending more time at home due to quarantine and social distancing, many homeowners are asking themselves this question. This has inspired an increase in home improvements that go beyond aesthetic enhancements. Homeowners want eco-friendly upgrades that improve indoor environmental quality (IEQ), which means improvements that support the health and wellness of the people who live in the home.

If you're curious how to improve your home's IEQ, here are three key projects to consider: 1. Hydronic radiant heating systems. Conventional forced-air systems push heated air through ductwork in the walls and ceilings. There are many drawbacks to this type of system. First, they are inefficient because hot air blows out vents and rises rather than staying lower to keep people comfortable. Second, it circulates dust, allergens and pollutants that lower the indoor air quality. Third, they can

be noisy, turning on and off all day. For a healthier home, consider hydronic radiant heating. This technology works by warming water at a heat source and circulating it through piping made of a special polymer called PEX that is installed beneath the floor. Uponor has been providing these systems in the United States longer than any other company. In fact, Uponor offers several innovative methods for installing radiant systems efficiently and effectively in any area of a home - from basements to bathrooms or even garages. For example, Uponor Fast Trak® is a simple-to-install, knobbed-mat system that adheres to a concrete slab for quick radiant tubing installation. Learn more about this unique solution at www.uponor-usa.com/radiant. A hydronic radiant system can dramatically improve a home's IEQ. There is no fan to circulate dust, pollen and odors, so you can breathe easier. Because it's in the floor, it keeps the heat low - where you and your family actually live - without hot and cold spots. You can easily heat in zones to save money, plus, because the system is near-silent, you'll enjoy a more peaceful home.

A Calling by John Degenhart, DC Monsignor Beeda was our priest at St. Joseph for 22 years. He had “a calling” to be a priest. He loved what he did, and people loved him. He would go on bus trips with the parishioners and travel through Europe for 4-6 weeks at a time. He loved to travel. But then he had a stroke which resulted in his left side being paralyzed. So, he

had to go to a nursing home for nearly 12 years. But do you know what impressed us the most about him? While his productive life was taken away from him—he never complained! He eventually said Mass and made the most of his stay there until he passed away last year. My mom and sisters would visit him about once a month. My mother had “a calling” to care for others. She was a nurse, raised us 12 kids, and always opened her home up to be a caretaker for her mom—Verna, Aunt Mary, husband--Gil and brother Cy. She always felt best when she was active and productive. But now she is 89 years old and all that hard work of lifting and washing others has caught up to her. She is very arthritic, and her pain wears her down. She is at my sister’s home, and although they are giving her great care, she can barely get out of bed anymore. As I hold her hand and encourage her to “be strong like Monsignor Beeda was”, she responds, “But I’m not strong like him. I’m embarrassed to complain about my pain”. And with a tear in my eye, I tell her “You were always loving and strong for everyone else, just

ask God each day to give you the strength to control your tongue and mind to try and stay joyful and thankful for each day God gives you”. With a tear in her eye she responds, “I’ll try Johnny, I’ll try”. Folks as you read this, I conclude that life is painful. As a senior your aches and pains will get worse with time. Like Monsignor Beeda did, develop a relationship with God that no matter how sickly you become, you look forward to heaven and that overcomes your aches. As a caretaker, you stay loving and patient with your senior patient when you still get enough rest and get help, so you still have free time for your normal activities. Hire help if you must or try to get other family members to pitch in their time. Jesus hung on the cross and said, “Father, forgive them for they know not what they do”. He built a life of faith that allowed him to end strong. Monsignor ended his life strong. I pray that I cultivate an attitude of strength now, that it will come naturally, that it will be a “calling”, to end strong. End strong my friend, by developing a spirit of faith and thankfulness now.

New Year, New You? - Lose Weight, Feel Better And Have Fun Doing It by Ting Oh, PT, Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers 2020 was a rough year for all of us, and the new year brings hope that 2021 will be much better. Aside from getting rid of COVID, many of us make resolutions to improve our health, exercise and eat better. However keeping our resolutions are tough but imagine if you did and how that would impact your life. It’s not easy but it’s very doable. So why is it so difficult to do something we know will be so good for our health? When given a choice, we tend to choose the option that is easiest and one that provides the greatest short term pleasure. Most of us do not think healthy options such as exercising is easy or pleasurable. So it takes willpower for us to make ourselves exercise and not eat those chocolate brownies. The problem is our willpower is not strong enough to resist all the temptations we encounter and we tend to give in and resort back to what we have done all our lives. However there are ways to take willpower out of the equation making it easier for us to make the healthier choice. One way is to have someone else be affected by our decisions. We all have had a friend who depended on us to drive them to an appointment. Even though we may have better things to do, we are sure we are there for them when needed.

Another way is to be accountable to someone who we have to answer to. We all want to do well and when we have to show someone else how we did, we tend to give it our best effort. Based on these principles FYZICAL Fitness is holding the Ultimate Weight Loss Competition. Starting on January 16, The Ultimate Weight Loss Competition is a team competition where you will work towards weight loss goals with a partner. Points will be awarded based on only weight loss and performing healthy habits such as exercise, healthy eating and keeping a food journal. As part of a team, your actions affect not only yourself but also your team mate. This way you are more likely to follow through to not let your team mate down. In 2020, the participants averaged losing 9% of their body fat and the winner lost 40lbs so we know it works. If you would like more information, give us a call at 570-501-1808. You can sign up a team of 2 or if you do not have a team, we will find one for you. Prizes will also be presented to the winning teams and individuals. FYZICAL Fitness membership required.

Guidelines For COVID-19 Testing At LVHN Do you need to get a COVID-19 test? If you need a COVID-19 test, where you go depends on why you need a test. Here are some simple guidelines. If you have symptoms such as fever, chills, cough, shortness of breath, muscle aches, or other cold and flu like symptoms, stay home and do any of the following: • Contact your primary care physician • Call the MyLVHN Nurse Information line at 888-402-LVHN. • Complete an E-Visit (detailed questionnaire visit submitted to a provider) by visiting MyLVHN.org or your MyLVHN app. • Complete an LVHN Video Visit by downloading the MyLVHN app. While you don’t have to be a legal resident of Pennsylvania, due to medical licensing regulations you must be in the state of Pennsylvania in order to do a video visit. During your virtual visit, you will be screened to determine if you need a COVID test. If it is determined you do need a test, one will be ordered and you will be guided to the appropriate testing location at a Coordinated Health or LVHN Assess and Test. If you do not have COVID-19 symptoms, but have had significant exposure: If you do not have symptoms but have been exposed to someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, call 888-402LVHN (5846) to talk with a nurse who can provide an order and refer you to the appropriate testing location. If you need a COVID-19 clearance test: If you need a test for travel or employer clearance, please contact one of the major pharmacies in our area. Rite Aid, Walgreens and CVS provide this service. We recommend calling ahead to ensure the pharmacy location you choose performs testing. For more information on COVID-19 testing at LVHN, please visit LVHN. org/COVID19.

National Cervical Health Awareness Month The American Social Health Association (ASHA) and the National Cervical Cancer Coalition have named January Cervical Health Awareness Month to encourage women across the country to get screened for cervical cancer and receive the human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccine if they are eligible. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), almost 14,000 new cases of cervical cancer were diagnosed in the United States in 2020 and an estimated 4,290 women died from the disease. Cervical cancer is the easiest gynecologic cancer to prevent, with regular screening tests and follow-up. Two screening tests that can help prevent cervical cancer or find it early is the Pap test and the HPV test. The Pap test (or Pap smear) looks for precancers, cell changes on the cervix that might become cervical cancer if they are not treated appropriately. The HPV test looks for the virus (human papillomavirus) that can cause these cell changes. The ACS regularly reviews and updates the cervical cancer screening recommendations when new evidence suggests that a change may be needed. The latest recommendations are: • All women should begin cervical cancer screening at age 21. • Women between the ages of 21 and 29 should have a Pap test every 3 years. They should not be tested for HPV unless it is needed after an abnormal Pap test result. • Women between the ages of 30 and 65 should have both a Pap test and an HPV test every 5 years. This is the preferred approach, however it is also reasonable to have a Pap test alone every 3 years. • Women over age 65 who have had regular

Supporting Workers’ Mental Health

screenings with normal results should not be screened for cervical cancer. Women who have been diagnosed with cervical pre-cancer should continue to be screened. • Women who have had their uterus and cervix removed in a hysterectomy and have no history of cervical cancer or pre-cancer should not be screened. • Women who have had the HPV vaccine should still follow the screening recommendations for their age group. • Women who are at high risk for cervical cancer may need to be screened more often. Women at high risk might include those with HIV infection, organ transplant, or exposure to the drug DES (Estrogen prescribed in pregnancy, removed from the market in 1971, daughters have an increased risk of vaginal and cervix cancer). They should talk with their doctor or nurse. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we treat gynecologic cancers, including cervical cancer, painlessly and noninvasively with radiation therapy. We use external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) to deliver high-energy X-rays which causes damage to cancer cells and thus their ability to multiply. Treatments only take about 15 to 30 minutes and side effects are usually minimal. Several factors determine candidacy for radiation therapy treatment including the stage of the cancer, potential side effects, age, and overall health. If you have any questions about radiation treatment for cervical cancer, please visit our website at www.HazletonCancerCenter. com or contact our center at (570) 459-3460.

Come in for a closer look at your health. Ask about the health screenings we offer. Our pharmacy is not only dedicated to making you feel better when you’re sick - we’re here to help you stay healthy. Come see us for blood pressure monitoring, patient counseling, vitamin therapy and more.

(NAPSI)—The challenges brought to daily life by the COVID-19 pandemic have spurred many businesses to consider ways they can support employees’ mental health. For help, businesses can turn to the Mental Health Toolkit developed by the U.S. Department of Labor-funded Employer Assistance and Resource Network on Disability Inclusion (EARN). The toolkit outlines strategies based around the “4 A’s of a Mental Health-Friendly Workplace”—awareness, accommodations, assistance and access.

New Toolkit helps employers support their employee’s mental health.

Awareness involves educating workers about mental health issues and taking action to foster a supportive workplace culture. Accommodations means providing employees with mental health conditions with the workplace supports they need to perform their jobs. Assistance refers to supporting employees with mental health conditions, something many businesses do through employee assistance programs. Finally, access means assessing healthcare plans to ensure coverage for mental health treatment, which has been shown to benefit not only employees, but also a business’ bottom line. According to the American Psychiatric Association, more than 80 percent of employees treated for mental health conditions report improved levels of efficiency and satisfaction at work. The toolkit also includes examples of mental health initiatives implemented by businesses of varying sizes and industries. Learn more at www.AskEARN. org/mentalhealth.

Chiropractic: The Cornerstone To A Healthy Lifestyle by Dr. Rowena De Jesus, Chiropractor, De Jesus Family Chiropractic It’s a new year and a great time to establish healthier habits! Now more than ever, it is of utmost importance to make conscious effort to keep your immune system in the best possible shape. In this month’s ad, we depict this model in our logo, which showcases the components of health that are essential to a healthy immune system and overall lifestyle. In our practice, we take pride in the love and care we give to each patient. We espouse the virtue, with love comes healing, which is what we want to communicate with our logo and to every individual considering chiropractic care. At the heart of our practice, our approach to healing and a healthy lifestyle is centered around the all-important spine. The well-being of the spine dictates the function of your central nervous system, the control center for all parts of your body, including your immune system! The hand is the centerpiece of our model of health, representing the Five Funda-

mentals of Health: nutrition, exercise, proper sleep, mental wellness, and the nervous system. That fifth and crucial component, of which I equate to the thumb in the hand of health, is where chiropractic spinal adjustment becomes an essential part of a healthy lifestyle. Without a good, healthy nervous system, those other fundamentals cannot function at their optimum. We, as chiropractors, work with the nervous system by offering alignment and balance to the spine and its attached framework. Here, we also use the hand to model the five components to a healthy spine: Flexibility, Alignment, Balance, Strength & Stability. For this, you can think of the acronym FABS, or FABulous Spine! This is what we achieve for our patients through chiropractic care. In all aspects of any wellness approach, chiropractic spinal adjustment plays an essential role for the body to function at

its peak performance. At De Jesus Family Chiropractic, we provide a multitude of services with a gentle approach for our patients so they can reach their full potential, including laser therapy for pain relief for musculoskeletal and neuropathy conditions, and mechanical motion therapy for balance and range of motion. Between myself and Dr. Scott, we offer 50 years of experience with gentle and effective approaches to streamline the specific needs to each practice member we serve. Next time you see our logo, remember how chiropractic is a key component to every aspect of a healthy lifestyle and the love that goes into caring for each patient we serve. We at De Jesus Family Chiropractic invite you to include chiropractic as a part of your healthy lifestyle. You can find us at DeJesusFamilyChiro.com, or call us at 570-788-2228. In The News by Stephen Schleicher, MD. 1) A recent study found that men who smoke have a higher rate of baldness than smokers. Further, the baldness starts at an earlier age (i.e. before age 35). The study authors postulate that nicotine may have a damaging effect on hair follicles. Another good reason to quit. 2) Speaking of smoking: “third hand smoke can affect people”; this a review of research conducted at Yale University and published in the Bottom Line. The article points out that harmful substances found in cigarette smoke adheres to walls and other surfaces where smoking has occurred. The residue can attach to clothing of people who enter those places and be transported elsewhere”. Dangerous habit. Smoker? Quit if you haven’t already done so. 3) “The Coronavirus Is Airborne Indoors.

Why Are We Still Scrubbing Surfaces?”, this the title of a recent article in the New York Times. I agree; definitely overkill to keep meticulously scrubbing surfaces. 4) Can dogs smell Covid? Yes according to recent research. Stated in a recent review article: “Scientists involved with the efforts suggest that canines could help to control the pandemic because they can screen hundreds of people an hour in busy places such as airports or sports stadiums, and are cheaper to run than conventional testing methods…….. Sniffer dogs are already a familiar sight in airports, where they detect firearms, explosives and drugs. Scientists have also trained dogs to detect some cancers and malaria” Here’s my question: suppose someone was carrying Covid and illegal drugs - would a dog bark twice ?

Eat And Drink Smart To Fend Off Cold And Flu Season (Family Features) It's no secret that a balanced diet with plenty of fruits and veggies can deliver important vitamins and nutrients for better health, but many of your favorite foods can actually help support your immune system, too. In addition to precautions like avoiding people who are sick and washing your hands often, you can influence your immune system through what you eat and drink.

• Stay hydrated. Keeping well hydrated can be difficult during the winter months, especially if you spend most of your time indoors. A warm drink like this flavorful Orange Spiced Tea provides a strong dose of vitamin C along with a delicious dose of hydration. • Keep the produce going strong. Fresh, seasonal fruits and veggies often come to mind during warmer months, but produce like citrus, leafy greens and root vegetables are plentiful during cold and flu season, too. "Consuming the whole fruit is the best way to ensure you gain the maximum nutritional benefit," Dr. Poonam Desai said. "When speaking with patients, I recommend seeking nutrients like vitamin C from whole food sources, rather than supplements, especially with a vitamin C-rich fruit like California oranges." • Get a natural boost of vitamins. Vitamins A and C, found in fresh citrus, are two key nutrients that support your body's natural line of defense, your immune system. Just one orange offers 90% of the daily recommended value of vitamin C, and California Navel oranges are in their peak season - just in time for the height of cold and flu season. Dental Office Visits – Your Safest Bet by Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. The Coronavirus pandemic has fundamentally changed life as we know it. As COVID-19 poses unprecedented threats to our health and safety, strategic precautions and infection control techniques have never been more important. A recent study conducted by MIT in conjunction with the ADA and CDC’s finding had concluded that Dental Offices rank in the highest percentile of “Safest Places to Be” even during these uncertain times. This may come as a surprise to the public with the field of Dentistry concentrating solely in one’s oral cavity; but this article will discuss this common misconception. Upon returning to our office in June, after having been closed for nearly three months, our staff had met with new hurdles and challenges which had, at the time, seemed insurmountable. Patient’s routing anxiety had now been further complicated by the uncertainty of the Covid-19 pandemic. Some would inquire, perhaps jokingly, “how was your vacation?” Make no mistake that this hiatus was filled with extensive information gathering, securing adequate PPE (personal protective equipment), installing proper protective devices, and monitoring the everchanging mandated safety requirements and regulations. The safety of our patients is our top

priority, so we’ve adopted the guidance of the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and American Dental Association (ADA) regarding COVID-19. When a patient is seated in the dental chair, they can have peace of mind that every surface visible to the naked eye and even those that are not have been disinfected to the utmost mandated standards. Some industries never considered infection protection plans in the pre-pandemic era. But others, especially Dentists, have been mastering the art of infection control for decades. “Dentists are really great at infection control and being prepared to create safety. That’s what we’re good at, and that’s what we’re doing.” In fact, we we’re doing it long before the coronavirus pandemic ever existed. Every step we take during a dental procedure helps prevent the spread of infection. Now, in the face of the Coronavirus, these stringent sterilization protocols have escalated to even new heights. Appointment times have been lengthened to assure proper room disinfection in between patients. Phone ahead practice entry and socially-distanced waiting areas allow minimal patient to patient encounter for further safety. We have installed a Hospital Grade UV Air and Surface Sanitization

System which effectively kills and eliminates 99.9% of all surface and airborne pathogens including viruses. We are also equipped with External Suction Units to capture all aerosolized particulate matter the second it is emitted. Keep in mind that Dental office staff would not place themselves knowingly in unsafe environments on a daily basis if they have close contact with those who are older, very young, or are immunocompromised. Patients should realize with this knowledge in hand that they too share in these safety measures. The fact that the CDC does not classify Dentistry as first in line for vaccine distribution further verifies the fact that there is very limited risk in Dental Office visits. If you feel as though you prefer to defer dental office visits until “this whole Covid-19 thing is over”, you run a high risk of facing oral and general health complications. Early detection of oral issues prevents stroke, heart attack, and diabetic concerns so the very low risk of a dental visit far outweighs such catastrophic complications. On behalf of my staff as well as myself, we would like to invite you to visit our Dental Office so we may identify, address, and correct any issues you may have where your safety is our ultimate goal.
