Ignore These Vehicle Repairs And You May Get Pulled Over (NAPS)—Many drivers may feel that they don’t have the time or money to address vehicle repairs immediately, but beware: Ignoring some repairs can get you pulled over and even ticketed. “Ignoring certain vehicle repairs may seem to save money in the short term but can lead to extra costs, such as fines or ‘fix-it’ tickets, if these problems are not taken care of when they arise,” explains Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “In some jurisdictions, car owners may even lose their license for certain violations. A few dollars spent on simple vehicle repairs can help avoid trouble with the law.” While a vehicle is in operation, traffic laws require that certain equipment is properly installed and functioning correctly, including brakes, headlights, turn signals, mirrors, windshields and safety belts, to name a few. The Car Care Council recommends
that drivers address these four repairs right away as they present public safety concerns that can earn drivers a traffic ticket on top of a repair bill. • Non-functioning turn signals and headlights or taillights that are cracked or broken. Most states require vehicles to have functioning turn signals as well as two functioning headlights and taillights. Taillights must illuminate red; if a taillight is cracked, it can give off a white light, which is also typically a traffic violation. • Cracked windshield. If a windshield is cracked, discolored or tinted in a way that obstructs vision, drivers may get ticketed and fined. In some states, vehicle modifications, such as tinted windows, are prohibited. • License plates are unreadable. If the license plate light is out or the plate is otherwise unreadable, drivers may be pulled over. In some states this includes clear or tinted plastic license plate covers.

No Spare Tire? by Thomas R. Buff It's hidden far away in the recesses of the trunk. Out of sight out of mind. Not needed until you hear the dreaded low tire alarm and the strange icon appears on the dash. Flat tire, no problem. I can put the spare tire on and be on the road in no time. Open the truck and to your surprise there is nothing but a can of fix a flat, the stuff you used to fix your bicycle tires when you were a kid. Wow, a new car without a spare! Where did it go? Did they forget to put it in the trunk? Not too long ago a spare tire used to be standard equipment in cars and trucks. The new car market is changing in ways that may leave some drivers stuck on the side of the road. Automakers have become so focused solely on fuel economy requirements, trunk space and Our Car safety concerns thatCare they Checklist have shifted Can Save You tires Thousands! toward smaller temporary or in many cases, no spare at all. Full size spares are the same size as the other tires on the vehicle and usually match the others. However, there has been a 49 percent decrease since 2007 of vehicles that still provide a full time spare. Temporary spares, often called “donut tires” will be found in 52 percent of 2014 plus model year cars. But, these tires are designed to be used on a temporary basis because they are smaller and are not designed for speeds over 55 miles per hour. “Run flat tires” normally require no spare at all. These tires have reinforced sidewalls that give them the strength to operate with little or no air at all. They are designed to go up to 50 miles at speeds under 50 mph in order to make it to a repair station. These tires give the motorist the advantage of not having to stop on the side

Panorama Community Magazine of the road to change it, which can lead to a dangerous situation. Nevertheless, they are not immune to blowouts from hitting potholes, which usually litter our area. Some new car manufactures are not including any type of tire at all. Instead, they are providing the lucky motorist with a tire repair kit, sometimes called an inflator or mobility kit. This kit consists of a small air compressor and a bottle of thick tire inflation fluid. If your tire goes flat, you simply attach the kit to the valve stem of the tire, plug the cord into your power point and the tire fills up. Instructions are included with the kit. There are limitations to what types of tire injury the kit can repair. It can only repair a puncture if it is on the tires tread and most experts believe the repair is not permanent. With the development of new tire technology, tires are stronger and more flat resistant. Run flat tires will get you to a tire repair shop safely without the need to change the tire on the side of the road. Tire pressure monitoring systems also provide a sense of security because the system warns you of a tire pressure problem. But according to a 2013 survey, one in seven cars bought today come without a spare tire. For drivers without a spare what happens if you experience a full blowout or the tire becomes shredded and you are on the side of the road out of cell phone coverage? Will a tire repair kit help you? Absolutely not. An argument can be made that eliminating the spare makes some sense granted that most motorists would not change their own tire because roadside assistance is only a call away. Industry
statistics indicate that most drivers average around seven years between flats. So, whether you prefer to change your tire or call for assistance is your choice. But the bottom line is that you are prepared in case of a blowout. You do not want to be caught by surprise when you open the trunk. Ask the sales staff to show you what type of spare the car you are buying has and if it doesn’t suit your needs ask for a spare tire. There is a long list of new vehicles that come with only an inflator kit. You will be surprised at what manufactures are included on this list. Use the internet and find out which manufactures cannot supply a simple spare tire when you purchase a brand new vehicle. It may change your choice in what brand of car to buy. Happy Motoring!

Avoiding Heirloom Damage

About a week ago, a friend called me in a panic. She realized that her sump pump failed and there was water all over her basement. After calling in the plumbers and the clean up team, she called me to ask if there was any way that she can save her beloved childhood scrapbooks. She told me, “While you had always told me not to store my scrapbooks in the basement, I had them up on shelves so I thought they were safe. Then, of course, my sump pump hose broke loose and sprayed the whole room from floor to ceiling with yucky water! Now what do I do?” I told her that this is the season when many people don’t realize that lots of new things are happening around the house— even in those less than exciting areas of
the house like the basement. That’s right Spring (and her sump pump hose) has sprung! For example, bugs are back with a vengeance this time of year. Creepy crawly creatures are making their way back to those dark areas of your basement, attic, and garage. They love to eat stuff like old paper, wood pulp, cardboard boxes, and bird seed. Solander boxes are acid free storage boxes that are great for photographs, prints, drawings, and other paper items.
the bugs out as bugs are not attracted to plastic like they are to wood and cardboard boxes. Since art and antiques like consistent temperature and humidity levels, at the very least, take that piece of art that you think is valuable and get it out of the basement! As for my friend’s scrapbooks and all other paper (ephemera) keepsakes, I advised museum quality solander boxes for storage. They are the museum standard. Solander or acid free museum storage boxes are acid free. They are chemically inert boxes intended for the storage of flat pieces including papers, prints, photographs, magazines, newspapers, cards, comic books, unframed art. They are a great solution for those old photographs of great-grandma that you just can’t bring yourself to display or to trash. When it comes to art, antiques, or collectibles, never store anything in wooden crates or cardboard boxes as both of these containers are acidic. They will off-gas or give off damaging gases. I’ve read where some “experts” have advised people to store baseball card collections in cardboard cigarette cartons or metal license plate collections in wooden crates. Wrong! The acid in cardboard can even damage antique china and so can old newspapers. Cardboard is never the solution to the storage of your heirlooms. If you must store your keepsakes in the basement, consider investing in a dehumidifier and solander boxes and plastic tubs. Always keep an eye on your sump pump. at Quiet Valley Living Historical Farm Quiet Valley’s 32nd annual Farm Animal Frolic is May 22, 23 and May 29, 30, Saturdays 10 am to 4 pm, and Sundays noon to 4 pm. To folks in the 21st century springtime means warmer weather, flowers blooming and the return of robins. In the early 1800s it meant fresh greens became available, a real treat after a bland winter diet. The kitchen garden was planted with such things as peas, onions, beets and carrots. Chickens started laying eggs again and it was also when the animals on the homestead had their babies. At Farm

Animal Frolic we celebrate the renewal of life that comes with the season of spring. Meet the baby farm animals up close and personal. See kid goats and lambs frolicking about. If you’ve ever wonder where the saying “two shakes of a lamb’s tail” came from you can see the reason for yourself. Chicks will be peeping away and some will be hatching in incubators so visitors can watch them crack out of their shells. There will be a new calf for the children to meet and guests of all ages will laugh at the ducklings as they play in the water. All the mommies of the babies will be on hand as well, keeping a close watch on their young, so folks will get to meet them, too, and learn something about their role on the farm. Our Suffolk Punch draft horses, Jenny and Judy, will take you on a wagon ride to the ice harvest pond and back. In the lower barn make sure to say “Howdy” to the piglets, always a lively bunch. In addition to the farm animals there are plenty of other fun activities. Twice a day there is a special children's show where youngsters can enjoy puppet shows or storytelling. There are opportunities to play old fashion games, try the Fish Pond or
visit our focus area for 2021 which is the “Goat Shed” where folks can learn some goat lore, play a game and make a craft. Sheep shearing will take place on Saturday May 22nd from 10:30 until all the sheep get a “hair cut”. The spinners and weavers will hold a Sheep to Shawl demonstration on the 22nd by taking one of the fleeces and attempt to complete a shawl by the end of the day. Raffle tickets will be sold for the finished shawl with the drawing being held at our Old Time Christmas event. Kathy Uhler, from the Pocono Wildlife Rehabilitation Center, will offer a presentation on local wildlife on Saturday May 29th at 11:30 and 1:30. Some of the Center’s residents will

On Sundays the school marm will offer presentations in the One Room Schoolhouse. The outdoor brick bake oven will be in operation during all four days of the event making homemade bread and cookies. There is nothing more lovable than baby animals, and adults, as well as children will get a kick out of a visit to Farm Animal Frolic. This is a wonderful opportunity to learn about farms, farm animals and to spend a day in the beautiful outdoors. Social distancing will be practiced and masks are required. Maybe you were all these things! There is one thing for sure, there was likely someone (or multiple people) in your life cheering you on, offering advice, or championing your efforts. Imagine now if those special people who were possibly a parent, grandparent, coach, or teacher were never in your life. Think about how different things would have been for you then and now. According to mentoring.org there are 9 million children in the US who would benefit from having a mentor. The Brandon’s Forever Home Teen Mentoring Program aims to be a part of the movement providing a committed, nurturing adult to be matched with one of our local teens currently on a wait list. The teens we have grown to know through the mentoring program are ages 14-21, they are bright, talented, and sadly very at risk. These children have grown
up facing neglect and abuse and have likely never had a single adult to rely on in their entire lives. Without our mentoring program, at risk teens are more likely to become incarcerated, addicted, homeless, pregnant, or deceased after they graduate high school – a future no child deserves or should have to face! The teen mentoring program currently meets once a month virtually for a free event and dinner. We encourage matches to stay in touch at least 2 hours of time in between our events and report back to us with what they have accomplished. If you are looking for a way to make a huge impact on lives in the community THIS IS IT, and it could not be easier! If you are unsure if you have the right personality to be matched with a teen, I can tell you- you do! Ethnic Food Picnic, Car Show, Music, and Mine Tours Sunday in Lansford
Memorial Day weekend is a special time at the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford, PA. Although the mine and museum will be open for tours, Sunday, May 30th, will feature other special activities to commemorate the holiday weekend and the regions coal mining heritage. The grounds will be filled with the wondrous smells of homemade ethnic foods coming from the picnic pavilion, the sounds of music in the field, the sights of beautiful antique and classic cars gathered on the grounds, and the feel of cool air coming from the over 160 year old No. 9 Coal Mine as visitors prepare to board the mine train for a one hour underground tour of the world’s oldest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine followed by a trip through the mining museum on the surface. The annual Memorial Day weekend event is scheduled for Sunday, May 30th,

from 11:00 AM - 4:00 PM and is open to the public. Admission to the grounds and parking are free. A nominal fee will be charged for the mine tours. The museum and all other activities are free. The Anthracite Region Chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America will present an antique and classic car show on the grounds. Anyone wishing to display their automobile can register as they arrive. Music will be provided by DJ Shawn Frederickson. A variety of homemade ethnic foods will be available for sale at the picnic pavilion including favorites such as halupki, haluski, pierogies, turkey & hamburger barbecue, homemade bean soup, hot dogs, homemade desserts, and a variety of beverages. This old-fashioned picnic is reminiscent of the annual coal miner’s picnics that were held years ago throughout the coal region. Come early, have a great time, and enjoy
the great food before it sells out! Take outs are also available. Food will be available for sale beginning at 11:00 AM. The main attraction is the exciting guided underground tours of the No. 9 Coal Mine which first opened in 1855. The tour is approximately one hour in length including the train ride into the mine. Tourists then embark on a walking tour of the fascinating sights underground. Visitors will also enjoy browsing the countless displays inside the museum that houses the region’s largest collection of coal mining artifacts and the gift shop located on the grounds. Sunday’s event offers something for all ages as we celebrate the Memorial Day weekend. fully refundable, $3000 for children ages 7 to 17 and $3600 for children ages 1 to 6. The government is saying that they are going to refund 50% of that in checks to taxpayers starting in July. This means where many people count on this credit giving you a larger refund, or paying your taxes, in the normal filing season, it is not going to be there when you file your taxes, you will have already received it. Therefore, if you start receiving CTC checks from the government, it might behoove you to save those dollars and not spend them. Earned Income Credit in the past was received by single people or people with children. Taxpayers had to be between the ages of 25 and 65. Under the new law for 2021 taxpayers between the ages of 18 and up will qualify for EIC depending on the earnings and/or children they have. Amendments can be filed for exempt unemployment income if you filed before the Third Stimulus package was done. The first $10,200 is exempt; the IRS says they will do some automatically, but to make sure you get your additional dollars back we can file an amendment for you. Those refunds in our office have been between $40 and $4000. ACA penalties, repayment of getting too much reduced Health Insurance Market Place discount, were also killed. The IRS is saying that they will automatically issue refunds to people that filed early and paid dollars they now do not have to. Again, amendments can be done, rather than “waiting”. The IRS still has over six million 2019 tax returns and issues to resolve. How long before they automatically take of these matters? Both President Biden and President Trump signed laws that are related to COVID deaths. FEMA has a program for funeral expense refunds, if you lost a loved one to COVID and paid the expenses out of pocket without assistance from Insurance or other sources. Lastly, critical information, President Biden is looking to change/delete the Tax Cut Acts that President Trump did. This will have major implications to personal and business taxes if this happens. Until anything is formally done no advice can be given for tax planning. Honest Abe’s has multiple staff members to assist you. The Cicadas Are Coming - Brood X Set To Emerge
Get ready for the largest of the 17-year cicada broods to emerge sometime during May. Brood X also known as the Great Eastern Brood is expected to emerge this year in mid-May through late June. Pennsylvania is home to eight different broods of cicada, none of these broods cover the entire state and emerge in select areas. Brood X is set to emerge in our entire coverage area including Luzerne, Carbon, Schulykill , Columbia and Monroe Counties. According to Gregory Hoover, Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences, the large, hard-shelled insects with oversized, bulging eyes will begin to emerge when soil temperatures hit 64 degrees Farenheit which will likely occur in the later half of May. Notable areas of emergence will included wooded areas, such as parks, tree-lined neighborhoods and woodlands rather than open areas such as agricultural fields or highly developed areas. The nymphs have been feeding on plant rootlets since they developed and will burrow through the soild to within an inch of the surface and they will begin changing. When they sense the soil temperature is correct they will emerge from inch diameter holes, and will haphazardly fly bumping into everything around them. They then climb up tree trucks. The males will begin "singing", you may remember how loud the singing can be from previuos emergences. Females will begin responding to these songs about 10 dyas after emergecnce, they will mate and start laying eggs in slits they cut into twigs and branches of nearly 80 species of trees and shrubs The singing of the male cicadsas will last about 3 to 4 weeks, which is how long the adult cicadas live. The eggs that were laid by the females willhatch in six to seven weeks and then the nymphs work their way out of the slits and drop to the ground, entering the soil. We won't see these nymphs emerge for another 17 years.

Ingredients:

• 8 ounces bittersweet chocolate, chopped, plus chocolate shavings (optional) • 40 large marshmallows • 2 1/4 cups heavy cream, divided
Directions:
In large bowl, combine chopped chocolate, marshmallows and 1/2 cup heavy cream. Microwave 2 minutes on high, or until marshmallows are melted. Let mixture cool 1 hour. Using mixer, whip 1 3/4 cups heavy cream until soft peaks form. Reserve and refrigerate 1/2 cup whipped cream for topping. In cooled chocolate mixture, fold in 2 cups whipped cream until combined. Add remaining whipped cream and mix until combined. Spoon mousse into ramekins. Refrigerate at least 2 hours. To serve, top with 1/2 cup reserved whipped cream and sprinkle with shaved chocolate, if desired.

Heat oven to 350 F. In large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, baking powder and salt. Add buttermilk, eggs, butter, lemon juice, vanilla extract and lemon zest. Stir until combined. Pipe batter into donut pan. Bake 9 minutes. Cool on wire rack. To make topping: In bowl, combine sugar with lemon zest. In separate bowl, place melted butter. What is an American Craft Brewer? Here in Northeastern PA we are lucky to have a variety of craft brewers dreaming up new and unique flavors of beer. The main hallmark of craft beer and craft brewers is innovation. Craft brewers often interpret historic styles with their own twists or even develop new styles. Though craft beer is generally made with traditional ingredients like malted barley - there are often interesting and non-traditional ingredients added to make distinct flavors. One of the best ways to get started with craft brews is by visiting a local brewery for a "beer flight". A flight includes several on tap beers in smaller 5-7oz. portions, giving you a chance to find what you like. After you've had the chance to sample, you can take your favorites home in various ways. Local breweries often offer growlers, cans or bottles.

Joe Maddon Joe Maddon began his managing career in Idaho Falls, a California Angels affiliate in 1981 with stops in Salem Oregon, Peoria Iowa, and Midland Texas. His career with the Angels has seen him organize spring training for Gene Mauch in the 80’s, two stints as interim manager in the late 90’s and bench coach under Mike Scioscia for the 2002 World Series Champion Angels. After leaving there in 2005, he immediately began tracking toward a Hall-Of-Fame managing career. Nine seasons in Tampa Bay saw them go from perennial losers to American League Champs and perennial over achievers. His next five were spent changing the fortunes of the ultimate challenge, a 108-year title drought of the Chicago Cubs. In 2016 the Cubs finally broke the streak and won the title. After parting ways with Cubs at the end off the 2018 season, he was hired almost immediately by Los Angeles Angels. 2020
Baseball is back and some things have changed since the last time fans were allowed in the ballpark. A local baseball legend is looking forward to a full season at familiar stadium. A local star will take over the reins of the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre Railriders. Local players will receive their assignments and a new league for Williamsport Crosscutters.

With a record of 26-34 it was the worst season for Maddon since the early days in Tampa. 2021 sees hope for a brighter season. The team is led by the best player in the world, Mike Trout and will also feature the return to pitching of two-way star Shohei Ohtani. Through the early part of the 2021 season the Angels have been competitive and seemingly in position to get Mike Trout into the playoffs for the first time in seven years.
Doug Davis
Bloomsburg Native Doug Davis will lead the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders in 2021. He was hired to be the manager starting in 2020, unfortunately his debut was sidetracked by the pandemic. Davis, 58, graduated from Central Columbia High School in 1981 and played collegiately at NC State University. He was a ninthround pick by the California Angels in the 1984 First-Year Player Draft and played professionally for 12 years, appearing in 797 games. Davis made his Major League debut in 1988 for the Angels and finished his playing career in 1995. He moved into the coaching ranks the following season and won a New York-Penn League title with Pittsfield in 1997. In 1998, he led Columbia to the South Atlantic League crown. Davis was a bench coach on Jack McKeon’s Florida Marlins staff in 2003, helping lead that club to a World Series win over the Yankees. The Toronto Blue Jays tabbed Davis to lead the New Hampshire Fisher Cats in 2006 and then elevated him to lead
the Syracuse Chiefs in 2007 and 2008. Over eight seasons as a manager, Davis has skippered 999 games with a .516 winning percentage (515-484). In addition to his time as a manager or coach, he has also held the positions of Minor League Field Coordinator for the Montreal Expos, the Marlins, and the Toronto Blue Jays. Davis played football, basketball, and baseball during his career at Central Columbia. He was a member of the 1981 PIAA AA State Championship basketball team. In football he was the All-Anthracite punter his junior year. In baseball he was the Columbia County League MVP both his junior and senior year. He also played on the USA All Star Team during the summer of 1981, playing on a European Tour. Davis’ first two stops as a player were in Peoria in 1984 and in Midland in 1985 and 1986. His manager for those years was Joe Maddon.
Travis Blankenhorn
Blankenhorn attended Pottsville Area High School and was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the third round of the 2015 Major League Baseball draft. After signing, Blankenhorn made his professional debut with the Gulf Coast Twins and he was later promoted to the Elizabethton Twins. Blankenhorn spent 2016 with both Elizabethton and the Cedar Rapids Kernels. In 2017, he returned to Cedar rapids earning Midwest League All-Star honors. Blankenhorn spent 2018 with the Fort Myers Miracle. In June, he was named a Florida State League All-Star and won the Home Run Derby with 31 home runs. In He returned to Fort Myers to begin the 2019 season before being promoted to the Pensacola Blue Wahoos where he was named to the Southern League All-Star Game. On September 14, 2020, Blankenhorn was promoted to the major leagues for the first time. He made his major league
Panorama Community Magazine debut the next day against the Chicago White Sox, and picked up his first major league hit off of Matt Foster. Sent down to the minors to start 2021, he was recalled on April 20th. Starting the year in the minors: Ray Black (Brewers) from WilkesBarre, Dante Biasi (Royals) from Hazleton and Joe McCarthy (Giants) from Scranton. Cory Spangenburg from Clark Summit is starting his second season with the Seibu Lions of the Nippon Japanese League
scouting technology, and educational programming designed to prepare them for careers as professional athletes. PBR will provide support for the league’s staffing, player and coach recruitment, on-field operations, and administrative functions. PBR will also use their media and technology platforms to promote the league and its players throughout the season. There was initial worry that losing an affiliated team would mean the loss of seeing prospects. The New York-Penn league was getting fewer top prospects

New League for the Williamsport Crosscutters While the 2020 minor league season was shut down due to the pandemic, their a g re e m e n t with Major L e a g u e Baseball expired. The new a g re e m e n t changed the very nature of the relationship between the two organizations. The teams essentially went from affiliates (working partners) to a franchise system. This restructuring caused the loss of 4 affiliated levels of minor baseball and about 25 teams across the country. The New York -Penn league, which started in 1939, ceased to exist as an affiliated league. (An affiliated league has its players assigned by an MLB team to one of its teams).
MLB Draft League
Major League Baseball and Prep Baseball Report, will operate the league. It will serve as a showcase for top draft-eligible prospects leading up to each summer's MLB draft. The league's initial six teams were formerly members of Minor League Baseball's New York–Penn League, Eastern League, and Carolina League . The league will consist of a 68-game regular season and an All-Star Break centered around the MLB draft. MLB Draft League participants will receive unprecedented visibility to MLB Club scouts through both in-person observation and state-of-the-art

every year due to the changing nature of baseball development. This new league should ensure higher quality players across the entire roster. After a year away from the ballparks and fields be sure to take the opportunity to catch a game this year. Even if it is a Little League Game or softball game in your local town. MATURE WORKER PROGRAM The Mature Worker Program/Senior Community Service Employment Program (SCSEP) offers you an opportunity to get the job skills, and the job leads, to get that better paying job. The purpose of the SCSEP is to offer a “stepping stone” back into the work force. The goal is to help the individual obtain permanent employment. To qualify for the program a person must be at least 55 years old, a resident of Luzerne/Wyoming counties, and meet federal low-income guidelines. SCSEP offers on-the-job training, referrals for additional classroom training (if appropriate), and referrals to employers in the community who are seeing the skills you have or will acquire in the program. It can also offer assessment, testing and counseling if desired or needed. The on-the-job training offered by SCSEP means that you will be assigned to train at a government or nonprofit agency for 15-20 hours per week. You will be paid the minimum wage by the program for the time you spend in on-the-job training, attending approved classes or program meetings, or otherwise engaged in authorized training activities.

This is just as true for your body's skin as it is for your brain and your muscles. How much quality sleep you get each night, and how you prepare yourself for sleep, can make a difference in the look and feel of your body's skin. "While many people have developed healthy routines to care for the skin on their face, it's just as important to develop a nighttime body care routine too," says board-certified dermatologist Dr. Sheila Farhang. "And it doesn't have to be complicated. There are simple steps you can follow that will have you covered, from head to toe." Farhang offers tips on how you can help your skin be at its best - while you're getting your beauty sleep. 1. Practice good sleep hygiene To give your skin's cells optimal renewal time each night, make sure you get the best quality sleep you can - and enough of it. Want to be sure you're getting the seven to eight hours minimum zzz's most adults need each night? Try the following: Be consistent about sleep and wake times, even on weekends and days off. Your body gets used to a rhythm, and it can be thrown off by changes - even just springing that clock forward. Sleep in a dark, cool room to fall asleep more quickly and stay asleep. Would you believe that allergies can make your teeth hurt? By the Dr. Frank Glushefski, D.M.D. Well, we can all certainly agree that is was a very snowy, wet and icy winter. As Spring arrived, April brought us more rain to add to the already moist ground conditions. Unfortunately, these damp conditions do not come without a price. Mold spores, pollen, dust, and dander are normally eradicated to very low levels with normal winter temperatures and snowfall. Would you believe that the beautiful springtime blossoms which are bursting with color all around us can cause tooth pain and discomfort. Additionally, sinus conditions can worsen with the initiation of pollen season and result in tooth pain and discomfort. Allergic rhinitis causes swelling of the mucous membranes of the nose, eyes, throat, middle ear, eustachian tubes, and sinuses. Symptoms of allergic rhinitis may include any combination of the following: congestion, postnasal drip, runny nose (rhinorrhea), sneezing, itching of nose, ears, eyes, and palate, earache, headache, swollen eyes, tearing, red eyes, inability to discern odors (anosmia), drowsiness, fatigue, malaise, and dental pain which manifests in primarily one's lower and upper back teeth. Clearly, allergic rhinitis is “allergic
shiners” which are dark circles around the eyes resulting from vasodilation or nasal congestion. Without fail, I always have my usual patients come into my office complaining of excruciating tooth pain nearly the same exact day each and every year. Upon reviewing their chart before their arrival, I already make a preliminary diagnosis based upon the cyclical nature of their recurring dental issue. At this point, you may be asking yourself, “How can I tell if it is my sinuses causing my teeth to hurt?” Following are a few general symptoms which may lead you to your own preliminary diagnosis of sinus-related tooth pain: 1. Tooth pain is caused by walking either down an incline or stairs. 2. Tooth pain seems to worsen when going from your “tippy toes” forcefully to your heels. 3. Tooth pain escalates when you move the position of your head side to side or forward and back. 4. When sleeping, tooth pain exists unless you fold or add pillows under your head.
1. If you feel congestion, take a combination of antihistamine/ decongestant and ibuprofen for a 24 hour period. 2. If you do not feel congested, take an antihistamine and ibuprofen for a 24 hour period.
In closing, early detection, diagnosis, and treatment is the best course of treatment to put an early end to seasonal rhinitis and resultant tooth pain. 1. The link between certain medications used to treat high blood pressure and skin cancer has been strengthened. The blood pressure medications in question are called thiazide diuretics. No link has been found with other drugs used to treat hypertension. So, if you are taking thiazide diuretics by all means have your skin checked at least once a year by a dermatologist, perhaps more often if you have fair skin or a personal or family history of skin cancer. 2. The good news regarding oral prescription medications for male hair loss: recent studies indicate that these medications might protect men from life-threatening effects of Covid if they are unlucky to get the virus. 3. The bad news regarding oral prescription medications for hair loss: recent studies have also linked one of them, Propecia, to depression and thoughts of suicide. As a consequence, I am switching my patients to an alternative drug, Avodart, which I have been taking (once weekly) for over two years, along with topical nonprescription Rogaine. Both seem to be working. 4. And speaking of hair loss: COVID infection in woman can result in significant hair thinning that can last months. Another reason to get vaccinated ASAP.

Make Managing Eczema Easier
(Family Features) More than 30 million Americans, including nearly 10 million children, have eczema, the umbrella term for a group of noncontagious, inflammatory and painful skin conditions marked by an itchy, rash-like appearance. Because one of the most challenging aspects of eczema can be its unpredictability, the National Eczema Association (NEA), designed an app to help people and parents easily track what’s important and make sense of it. The app, called EczemaWise, aims to revolutionize how people living with the condition manage it with a faster, more efficient tracking system that helps uncover trends and makes preparing for doctors’ appointments easier. People with eczema tend to have an overreactive immune system that produces inflammation on the skin when triggered by a substance outside or inside the body, such as food or pollen, along with factors like stress and sleep. Experts say tracking and recording symptoms and possible triggers is key to managing the condition, but it can be time-consuming, and many people struggle to keep thorough notes in journals or on their smartphones. “One of the best things out there to help keep track of your child’s eczema is EczemaWise because it’s so easy to use,” said Aisha Bryant, mother of a 3-year-old with

A CEO of an Allentown company called me 10 years ago. He said, “My 31-year-old son has lower back pain for 3 years. We have seen every specialist we could, we spent $17,000 out of pocket. Yet he still suffers from lower back pain. My employees tell me that you are good, will you see him?” I said sure and he came in the next day. Listen intently to what happened. As I walked into my exam room, this tall, slender young man was sitting in the chair on top of his left foot. He had his left leg twisted and was sitting on top of his left foot. Remember, a good doctor does not just fix the pain, you must be a detective to figure out what is the patient unknowingly doing that causes the pain. As I began to question him, he said his pain was in his lower back region, it started on/off three years ago

Cervical Cancer: What Every Senior Woman Should Consider By Marlin Duncan, Comfort Keepers
Cervical cancer was once the leading cause of cancer-related death for American women – but not anymore. Pap smears have become a part of regular checkups or gynecological exams, making it possible to catch the disease early on, thereby preventing it from becoming fatal. Seniors and Cervical Cancer As women age, they may feel that they are no longer at risk for certain physical disorders. Often, this is the case with cervical cancer. According to research conducted by scientists at the Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis, MO., the rate of death for women over the age of 65 from cervical cancer is actually higher than that of women below that age, and 25 percent of new cases occur among seniors. In fact, of that group of older
women, approximately 7.6 per 100,000 die from cervical cancer, as compared to only 2.1 for younger women. It is believed that so many more senior women die, simply due to the fact that they choose to not have pap smears, putting them in jeopardy – and if they already have cervical cancer, many decline treatment. Doctors also have a tendency to limit aggressive treatment in older patients, which is not always necessary, and more aggressive treatments could improve outcomes. Some studies have shown that many older patients actually tolerate radiation therapy and aggressive surgical therapy well, thus increasing their chances for survival. Of course, the overall health of the senior should be taken into consideration by the doctor.

Panorama Community Magazine The Possibility of Faulty Data Women are often told they don't have to get a Pap test for cervical cancer if they're over 65, but the data behind that recommendation might underestimate their cancer risk, researchers say. That's because many studies don't take into account that many women have had hysterectomies. The surgery removes a woman's risk of cervical cancer, since there is no cervix present—and 20 percent of the women over age 20 in this study said they had had that surgery. When they looked at cancer rates only in women who hadn't had a hysterectomy, the researchers found that the odds of having cervical cancer were higher; 18.6 per 100,000 women, compared to 11.7 cases without that adjustment. A Bit of Healthy Advice According to the National Institutes of Health, just over half of women who are 65 or older have undergone a pap smear in the past three years, and 25 percent of older women have never been tested. Sometimes, this is because there is a lack of insurance or information, but many
simply neglect doing so, thinking that it is no longer necessary. Senior women should take the opportunity to speak with a health care provider if they have not recently been tested for the disease. Signs to Look For According to the CDC, the primary indicator of cervical cancer is abnormal bleeding or vaginal discharge, which can also indicate cancers of the ovaries or uterus. If a woman experiences this

Preventing & Treating The World's Most Common Cancer

by Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton May is National Skin Cancer Awareness Month. With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, and one in five Americans developing skin cancer in the course of their lifetime, skin cancer is by far the most common cancer. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the only international organization devoted solely to education, prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment of the world’s most common cancer, about 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun. By sharing facts about the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging people to check their skin for warning signs, lives can be saved. Skin cancer occurs when there are abnormalities in the cells that make up the skin. There are several types of malignant skin cancers. Two main types are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growing cancer found in the base of the epidermis that accounts for about 90% of all skin cancers. It seldom spreads, but if left untreated can invade bone and other tissues under the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma is found on the surface of the skin. It can be more aggressive, can grow deep below the skin and spread to distant areas of the body. A third type of skin cancer, called melanoma, begins in the cells that produce pigment in the skin. This type is less common, but more serious. However, if caught early, there is a nearly 97% chance for cure. Skin cancer occurs when there are abnormalities in the cells that make up the skin. There are several types of malignant skin cancers. Two main types are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Since its inception in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher as an important part of a complete sun protection regimen. Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Below is a list of skin cancer prevention tips:

• Seek the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. • Avoid skin burns. • Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds. • Cover up with clothing, including a broad-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. • Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. • Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. • Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. • Examine your skin head-to-toe monthly. • See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is used in the treatment of skin cancer. EBRT is a painless and noninvasive treatment for skin cancer, damaging cancer cells and their ability to multiply. During treatment, high-energy
X-rays are delivered to the cancer cells with a linear accelerator (LINAC). Radiation is very damaging to the cancer cells, but is well tolerated by the surrounding normal cells. Also, radiation penetrates only a very short distance into the skin, so that internal organs can be completely spared from its effects. Patients treated with external beam radiation therapy receive a certain number of daily radiation treatments usually over a period of four to five weeks. Treatments are outpatient and usually take about 15 minutes. Side effects are generally minimal, and most patients return to routine activities immediately after each treatment. (BPT) - Aldelly always liked to wear heels - "even to the supermarket," she says. But in 2013, when she was 25, she began to have difficulty walking in her favorite shoes. "My foot just started not working well." She began to experience other strange symptoms, including weird pains in her body, fatigue and troubles with her bladder. But when she saw her doctor, every symptom got explained away. Her feet problems might have been caused by a childhood of dancing. The bladder issues and fatigue could be due to having recently given birth. Despite being told everything was OK, Aldelly knew something was wrong. One day, at a work event, she broke down. She couldn't walk, couldn't control her bladder and she felt exhausted. She called her primary care physician from the party, who said she was going to send her to a neurologist. In 2016, the neurologist did some tests, including an MRI, and later called Aldelly to tell her she had a rare disease called neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD). NMOSD is a debilitating autoimmune disease of the central nervous system

(CNS), where the immune system mistakes normal tissues of the CNS as foreign. NMOSD affects up to 15,000 people in the U.S., primarily women, and mainly attacks the optic nerve and spinal cord. With NMOSD, recurring attacks can lead to an accumulation of debilitating symptoms and blindness, muscle weakness, and paralysis. But understanding the disease and early diagnosis offer the best opportunities to help treat the condition. In some ways, it was lucky that Aldelly was diagnosed quickly. Many people with NMOSD are misdiagnosed, especially since the symptoms often seem similar to those of multiple sclerosis. But with two small children, a job and a new house, Aldelly denied she had the debilitating disorder. "I just didn't have time for this." After other neurologists confirmed the diagnosis, she began treatment. Still, for a long time, she pretended nothing was wrong. She would make excuses about a twisted ankle when she limped or explain away her cane by saying she'd been in a car accident. Then she decided to come out to her friends, and her wider social media community. "It allowed people to understand me, and for me to be open about my physical limitations." She has since learned to adjust to living with NMOSD. The disease has made her life unpredictable - she often has spasticity in her limbs, incontinence, numbness and tingling sensations. Aldelly is grateful she hasn't had troubles with her eyes like others experience. But it has prevented her from doing everyday activities "It's a roller coaster," she says. Aldelly has a strong family support system - her parents live nearby - and she says social media has given her a powerful community. "People just started reaching out," she says. "That's helped a lot." Social media has played a key role in bringing together many people living with NMOSD, including Sumaira Ahmed, who started The Sumaira Foundation after she was diagnosed with NMOSD at the age of 25. Her foundation aims to generate global awareness, fund research to find a cure and build a community of support for patients and caregivers while providing education about NMOSD to a variety of audiences through social media events, conferences, a podcast and more. "We're passionate about building positivity and communities of support," says Sumaira. "None of us can go through this alone."

My Hands Keep Going Numb. Why?

FYZICAL Hazleton can help find the answer. by Ting Oh, PT Fyzical Physical Therapy & Balance Centers Hand numbness is a common problem. Often, it means that you have a nerve problem. People sometime complain of numbness in their hands while driving, while reading, after work or even while they sleep. Numbness in the hands can mean that you have pressure on a nerve somewhere along its path. That path starts at the neck and ends in the finger tips. In many cases it is treatable; however, you must correctly identify the source of the numbness in order to provide the right treatment. Let’s say for example you have a lamp that is not working properly due to some electrical problem. The problem might be coming from the wall socket, somewhere along the cord, or maybe even in the lamp itself. If the problem is coming from the wall socket, it would not make sense to replace the lamp because it was not the true source of the problem. The same is true for solving the problem of numbness in the hands. To provide the right treatment, you must find the correct source of the problem. To begin with, a physical therapist can perform a number of physical tests during an examination that will give insight as to where the pinched nerve might be located. Within a few minutes, a physical therapist can usually see if the problem is coming from your neck, somewhere in your arm, or if it may be in your hand/wrist. These are good tests – however, there is test that can better identify the exact location of the pressure with nearly 90% accuracy. That test is called an EMG/NCS. These tests are now being performed at FYZICAL. An EMG/NCS test uses a probe to send an electrical impulse down a nerve and then measures its speed of travel. This is like a police radar gun that clocks the speed of a moving vehicle. Then, another probe is used to assess what happens to that electrical impulse once it reaches a muscle. This portion of the test can show if the compressed nerve problem is new/mild or if it is chronic/severe. With this information, your doctor can provide much more specific recommendation for treatment. Correctly diagnosing where the numbness in your hands is coming from is important. Knowing the severity of the

problem will help in making deciding how to best treat it. A mild problem can oftentimes be easily fixed with specific stretches and physical therapy treatments. More severe problems may require a consultation with another health care specialist. But either way, knowing where the problem is truly coming from will help speed your recovery. As we celebrate Women’s Health month, we would like to remind readers to schedule your mammogram. A mammogram is recommended annually for women over the age of 40 and regularly for those patients that may be considered higher risk due to a personal or family history of breast cancer, abnormal breast changes or long-term use of hormone therapy. Hazleton Imaging has been serving patients in the area since 2001 and will continue providing the same service for many years to come. If your doctor has ordered diagnostic imaging for you, it is because he or she feels that it is important. We realize that everyone is worried about the Coronavirus and we want you to know that we are working hard to keep you and our staff safe and healthy. Our staff members wash or sanitize their hands and disinfect the equipment between each patient. We are also practicing social distancing wherever possible and in order to maintain a safe environment, we are screening staff and patients. It is important to know that we are not allowing any staff members or patients who have symptoms or who have been exposed to someone with suspected Coronavirus symptoms into our facility. If you have a fever, a cough, or are experiencing shortness of breath, let us know and we will be happy to reschedule your appointment. We are staying up to date on the current situation as it evolves and adjusting accordingly. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation during this time. We are fully accredited by the ACR. The concept of Hazleton Imaging was created by a group of local Radiologists with the sole purpose of providing unparalleled service and quality to the patients & physicians of the Wyoming Valley. These physicians earned the respect by the local clinicians as the elite providers of Radiology interpretation in the area at one of the regional hospital facilities. From this, the concept of Hazleton Imaging, a full service, first class Diagnostic Imaging Center was conceived. Most people do not realize that fees vary tremendously. Hospitals can charge higher fees for their services then out-patient centers such as Hazleton Imaging/Vision Imaging. If you have a higher deductible, you’ll pay more out of your pocket. If you are a self-pay or on a deductible plan, check out our lower cost structure.
