The COVID-19 pandemic has been especially hard on retail food businesses as restaurants and bars had to limit their seating capacity, invest in alterations for outdoor Napolitana & Sicilian Pizza • Platters • Cheesesteaks Salads • Hot & Cold Hoagies • Wings • Stromboli dining, and modify their business operations for a prolonged period of time. In order to help support local eateries and pubs recover from this difficult time, several organizations teamed up to launch a Food Trail promotion to encourage the public to patronize local restaurants, whether dine in or take-out, or by way of gift Eat-In, Take-Out card purchases. Thanks to funds made available from or Delivery the Luzerne County CARES Act grant, the Free Delivery $10 & Up Downtown Hazleton Alliance for Progress and Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has teamed up with the Luzerne County Tourism and Visitor’s Bureau and DiscoverNEPA to 225 E Broad St organize five different food trails that collectively Hazleton feature 70 different restaurants in and around Hazleton. The program was launched at the Open Daily end of 2020, but the trails are still available to 8:30am to 10:30pm follow. It's never too late to support our local Closed Monday restaurants. A paper “passport” for each trail has been designed to guide the public to each establishment. Sunday, September 5th from 11 AM to 4 PM, the No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum in Lansford will be celebrating Labor Day Weekend with a picnic featuring homemade ethnic foods, coal mine and museum tours, music, and a Living History Encampment. Parking, admission to the grounds, music, and the Living History Encampment are all free to the public. A nominal fee is charged only for the coal mine tour and food at the picnic. This is a great value for families and those looking for a fun day out that won’t break the bank. The Living History Encampment will be on the grounds starting Saturday, the day before the picnic.
The Living History Encampment commemorates the 156th anniversary of the ending of the Civil War, which occurred earlier in the year. Come out and learn what life was like for soldiers during battle, see what a typical camp looked like, what kinds of dress they wore, and the struggles they faced. The encampment will include period gun firing demonstrations, an old-time wash display, and more! Each day visitors can also tour the historic No. 9 Mine, which first opened in 1855, and experience what is was like to work in an underground Anthracite coal mine. Visitors ride 1600’ into the mountain and then begin a fascinating guided walking tour of the oldest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine in the world. Tourists will see many of the unique features of the mine including the original 700’ deep elevator shaft, explore the mule-

way, and see a miner’s hospital cut from solid rock. On the surface, visitors can browse the vast exhibits housed inside the Wash Shanty Museum, home to one of the largest collections of mining artifacts in the region. On Sunday only, the Old-Fashioned Labor Day Picnic will be featuring homemade ethnic foods, desserts, and beverages that are common to the coal region. Visitors can eat in the picnic pavilion and take-outs are available. Entertainment will be provided by DJ Shawn Frederickson. The No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum is located at 9 W. Dock St. in Lansford, PA, only 15 minutes away from historic Jim Thorpe and Tamaqua off US Route 209. Mine tour tickets can be purchased in the gift shop upon arrival. The Greater Hazleton Concert Series Begins Its 86th Season This Month
The Doo Wop Project Celebrating 86 years of outstanding performances, The Greater Hazleton Concert Series, a non-profit, communitybased organization, continues to offer top quality, professional, entertainment at reasonable prices. The 20212022 season will feature ten exciting, professional, concerts. The Concert Series begins this month with two outstanding performances. Friday, September 10th The Doo Wop Project The group begins at the beginning: tracing the evolution of Doo Wop from the classic sound of five guys singing harmonies on a street corner to the biggest hits on the radio today. In their epic shows The Doo Wop Project takes audiences on a journey featuring foundational tunes from the Crests, Belmonts and Flamingos through the

What is Cryotherapy and What Are It's Benefits? Brought to you by Sacco Chiropractic
What is whole body cryotherapy? Whole body cryotherapy (a.k.a. Cryo, some people even call it body freezing therapy) is the exposure of an individual to extremely low temperatures (-170 C or -274 F) for 3 minutes to decrease pain and inflammation and boost hormone and neurotransmitter levels. The result is decreased recovery time and pain from intense workouts, injuries, and chronic conditions, increased energy levels, antiaging and mood boosting effects. How and why was whole body cryotherapy developed? Cryotherapy machines were originally developed in the 1970s to help people that suffered from rheumatoid arthritis. When dramatic improvements were seen in patients (decreased swelling, decreased pain, increased mobility) researchers began to look at whole body cryotherapy as a treatment modality for other disease such as rheumatism, fibromyalgia, multiple sclerosis, and other musculoskeletal disorder. Eventually athletes discovered cryotherapy’s benefits and it has now
become widely adopted across the US. I hate the cold. Is it bearable? Describing the feeling of a treatment is like standing in front of a freezer on a hot day. It’s a chill but not painful. If you have ever done an ice bath or a cold shower, you have endured much worse than a cryotherapy treatment. Sessions at Sacco Chiropractic & Wellness are completely dry and after 3 minutes in the chamber you immediately warm up & no longer feel cold. Will Cryotherapy make me lose weight? A single treatment can burn between 500 to 800 calories. Cryotherapy causes an increase in the amount of brown fat (brown adipose tissue) that you have in your body. Brown fat’s role in the body is to produce heat, it does this by taking calories from white fat (white adipose tissue). While individuals with higher levels of brown adipose tissue have lower body fat percentages, and you burn calories with cryo, it's always best to use this in conjunction with diet and exercise. How many sessions can I do in one day? Two sessions a day is the maximum
number of treatments that a person can undergo in one day. For most people one session a day is enough. Two treatments a day is only recommended for athletes undergoing intense training camps or people with severe injuries or conditions. Is it dangerous? No, we use liquid nitrogen as the chilling agent, and it never comes in contact with your skin. Nitrogen is non-toxic, and non-flammable; it comprises 78% of the air we breathe. A trained operator is always present during the treatment to control the temperature and monitor your comfort. There are no locks or latches on the door, so you are able exit the cryo machine easily and quickly anytime. Who shouldn’t use it? Anyone who is currently sick, pregnant, has severe, un-managed hypertension (BP> 180/100), has a cardiac pacemaker, is being treated for cancer, has deep vein thrombosis, acute or recent myocardial infarction, uncontrolled seizures, fever, unstable angina pectoris, cold allergy, acute kidney and urinary tract diseases, or is under

the citizens living in the city of Hazleton. Let us begin with the real primary numbers. I received 305 Democratic votes and 386 Republican votes. Also, there were an additional 115 votes that were not accepted due to the misspelling of my name. Technically, there were 801 votes for me in a write-in campaign. If you split the 115 votes that were thrown out, I lost each nomination by 100 votes. To all the good citizens of Hazleton, I will be back in November’s General Election, needing 300 more write-in votes to take a seat. My plan is to have an exceptional and organized campaign to educate everyone on what my goal is. It has always been to fix the quality of life in Hazleton, not with band aides but with real solutions. I would like all the citizens in Hazleton to have a better place to live, work, enjoy and raise their families… Hazleton needs to get back to the way it used to be. I will be your 24/7 councilman. STEP 1 - Cut the cauliflower into large florets. Bring a saucepan of cold, salted water to the boil over high heat and add cauliflower. Once water has returned to the boil, cook cauliflower for 1 minute, then drain and set aside.

STEP 3 - To make the batter, place nuts, garlic, ginger, oil and half the yogurt in a food processor and chop until smooth. Stir in spices, 1/2 tsp salt, roasted chickpea flour and remaining yogurt. Transfer batter to a large bowl, add

STEP 6 - Spread a serving platter with creme fraiche and top with cauliflower. Combine coriander, tomato, chaat masala and chilli, and scatter over cauliflower to serve.
Quick Tip
If your Gulab Jamun is dissolving when you are frying it, there are two possible reasons. Either the oil is not hot enough, or the dough is too dry. Make sure the oil is 360 to 375 F. You may find it helpful to cover the dough as you're rolling it if you're finding it takes a long time; this will also help protect it from drying out.

You do not need to use all the cream, just enough to reach the desired consistency; the smoother it is, the better, and the less likely the dough will become hard when it's fried.

2021 marks the 100th Anniversary of the first radio broadcast of Major League Baseball. The first baseball game ever broadcast on radio was the Pittsburgh Pirates versus Philadelphia Phillies game on August 5, 1921. The game was broadcast by KDKA of Pittsburgh, and the Pirates defeated the Phillies 8-5. It was broadcasted by KDKA staff announcer Harold Arlin KDKA describes itself as the "Pioneer Broadcasting Station of the World". KDKA went on the air to broadcast the 1920 Harding-Cox presidential election results on the evening of November 2, 1920. Radio technology dates to the 1890’s and it experienced many ups and downs during its formative years. One of the biggest downs was the public ban on radio receivers in WWI. The ban was lifted after war, and experimental stations started broadcasting including station 8XB in Pittsburgh, which later became KDKA. Harold Arlin Harold Arlin has the distinction of being the first radio sportscaster in history and the first full time radio broadcaster as well. Arlin was born in Missouri in 1895 and received an engineering degree from the University of Kansas in 1917. After graduation he moved to Pittsburgh to work for the Westinghouse Electric Company. According to Jim Welch reporting in 1955, Arlin and several others engineers from Westinghouse were invited to tour the KDKA
studios which, at the time, were in a shack on the roof of a Westinghouse plant. While on the roof, another friend invited Arlin to say a few words into a microphone nearby. Arlin’s voice proved to be clear, crisp, and friendly, he was hired as a fulltime announcer, making him the first radio announcer in the world. On August 5, 1921, Arlin sat in a converted ground-level box seat at Forbes Field and provided play-by-play analysis of the game using a converted telephone as a microphone and some jerry-rigged equipment set up behind home plate. The game was broadcast over Arlin's KDKA. Arlin would go on to broadcast tennis and football for the University of Pittsburgh, and the Dempsey-Firpo fight in 1923. He is credited with the first short wave broadcast to Europe and the London Times called him the “Best Known American Voice in Europe.” He is also credited with pioneering celebrity interviews. He eventually retired from broadcasting and resumed his engineering career in Ohio. He returned to the booth twice once in 1952 at the request of his former employer to nationally broadcast the result of the 1952 Presidential Election. In 1972, Arlin announced his first professional baseball game in more than 50 years. The game was between the Pirates and the Padres. Arlin's grandson Steve was pitching for the Padres at this time.

Announcer Bob Prince invited Arlin to come back to the broadcasting booth. Prince and Arlin announced the game together as the Padres won. For announcing the game, Arlin received a certificate and a pair of shoes which, according to his grandson Steve, "...he wore them all the time." Arlin passed away at the age of 90 in 1986. The Game The first place Pirates defeated the last place Phillies 8-5. The Pirates were leading the National League by 2 games, and eventually they would lose the league to the Giants by 4 games. The game featured two future Hall of Famers Rabbit Maranville and Max Carey. Phillies starter Jimmy Ring went 8 innings and gave up 8 runs. Pirates starter Hal Carlson was knocked out after 3 inning and replaced by Jimmy Zinn, who pitched brilliantly in relief. The entire game recap can be found at sabr.orggame collection. There were two connections to our area in the game, Frank Parkinso n Phillies shortstop Frank Parkinson and Umpire Charlie Moran Frank “Parky” Parkinson Parkinson was born in 1895 in Dickson City to German immigrants, he was one of nine children. He came of age as America entered WW1. Parkinson enlisted in the Army. He served 2 years with the 35th Engineers, Company I before he was honorably discharged. His career was delayed by the war and he made his debut with Phillies in 1921 at age 26. Parkinson primarily played 2nd base. In 378 lifetime games, he had 335 hits and batted .256. His total of 562 assists

On Labor Day 1922 he hit two home runs and two doubles and set a fielding record with 12 putouts and assists without an error in a double header. Recently baseball historians have gone back and used modern metrics to retroactively give out awards that didn’t exist in their time. He harlie would have been a gold glove C winner in 1922. player in the early 1900’s for the St Louis Cardinals. After his playing days, he became an umpire calling over 3000 games and 4 World series. His connection to NEPA is as a football coach. He coached Jim Thorpe at the Carlisle Indian Industrial School in 1915 and later went to coach at Bucknell University. He Moran was inducted in the Hall of Fames for Bucknell
and Texas A&M and Centre College as a coach. Moran also coached one year in the fledging NFL. Moran is one of the few people to successfully cross over multiple sports. The on-the-job training offered by SCSEP means that you will be assigned to train at a government or nonprofit agency for 15-20 hours per week. You will be paid the minimum wage by the program for the time you spend in on-the-job training, attending approved classes or program meetings, or otherwise engaged in authorized training activities.

The Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021 (CAA) (H.R. 133), funds the government for its fiscal year ending September 30, 2021. was signed into law on December 27, 2020. The CAA approved the round two of stimulus and certain tax law changes. Most of the changes go into effect 2020 but some did affect 2020 tax returns. PA Vehicle Safety Inspections by Thomas R. Buff Vehicle safety inspections are procedures mandated by the government to ensure that a vehicle conforms to all regulations concerning safety, emissions, and/ or both depending on what county your vehicle is registered. Safety inspections can be required at various times depending on the vehicle. All cars, trucks trailers and motorcycle’s require a yearly safety inspection. School buses must be inspected twice a year. In Pennsylvania, all vehicles and light trucks weighing 11,000 pounds or less are required to pass a visual anti tampering check as part of the safety inspection. Vehicles registered as classic or antique are exempt from the anti-tampering portion of the inspection. The visual anti tampering check is simply a visual inspection

that verifies the presence of emission related components that were originally installed on the vehicle. There are 42 non-emission counties in PA. In Luzerne county an emission check is required if the vehicle has a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating under 9000 pounds. The emission inspection is a visual inspection plus a gas cap check if applicable as newer cars are now being designed without a gas cap. In many other counties with larger populations a smog check is also performed as part of the emission check. In the United States, vehicle safety inspection is governed by each state individually. Pennsylvania, as we all know requires a safety inspection on passenger cars and light trucks once a year. Heavy trucks were previously required to be inspected twice a year but the regulations now require large trucks to be inspected annually. Some states and other countries do not mandate a safety inspection program. This leads to some controversy over whether it is a cost effect way to improve the safety of drivers. Today, less than half the states in the U.S. have any type of periodic motor vehicle inspection (PMVI) program. Of
the states that have these programs, a few only require a vehicle safety inspection if you sell the vehicle or transfer the title. Many believe that the decline of PMVI programs has led to an increased number of neglected repairs. History shows that vehicle safety was once a priority in all states. In 1966, Congress passed the Highway Safety Act, which required the U.S. Secretary of Transportation to institute a uniform standard for mandatory state highway safety programs. One of the Dept. of Transportation’s (DOT) standards were a requirement for states to conduct PMVI programs. By combining highway safety grant funds and federal construction funds to a state’s compliance with the programs, the DOT helped to ensure across-the-board inspections.

Panorama Community Magazine By 1975, 31 states and the District of Columbia had periodic inspection programs. It seemed the inspection program would soon involve all states. But Congress later passed the Highway Safety Act of 1976, which revoked the DOT’s authority to withhold highway funds. Shortly after this act, 10 states cut the inspection programs altogether. The National Highway and Safety Administration no longer had the authority to promote PMVI programs, and the number of inspection states has been on the decline ever since. In the U.S. only seventeen states and the District of Columbia now have a periodic safety inspection program. New Jersey was the last to ditch its safety program for automobiles in 2010. Maryland requires an inspection prior to registration or transfer of ownership. Delaware requires an inspection ever two years and brand new cars are inspected only after the first four years if the vehicle stays titled under the same owner. Missouri car owners only have to have their cars inspected ever five years. A few states require only a federally mandated emission inspection. In Utah, state inspection is required every two years for the first eight years and annually every year thereafter. Other countries utilize different safety inspection procedures. In Japan, car owners must have their vehicles inspected when it turns three years old and every two years afterward. Germany also adheres to the two year inspection policy. In most parts of Australia, once

a vehicle is registered it will not have to be inspected again if it remains with the same owner. In South Wales, vehicles over five years old are required to obtain what is called an E-safety check. Most countries adhere to a five to three year safety inspection cycle At the peak of safety inspection popularity in the U.S. forty five states had some type of vehicle inspection maintenance rules on the books. With only eighteen now participating, the opposition to safety inspection programs across the county are obvious. Many governing bodies believe safety inspections are an interference with citizens daily lives and it is the sole responsibility of the car owner to ensure the safety of the vehicle. While this may be true, automotive technicians across the country who repair vehicles on a daily basis do not agree. They see the continuing trend of the failure of motorists to properly maintain their vehicles on a regular basis. The lack of a safety inspection program would force motorists to take their vehicles to repair shops for services such as brake and steering system inspections. The
old saying,” if it is not broken, do not fix it” still holds true to many drivers. How many motorists would take their cars to a shop for a thorough inspection at least once a year if it is not required? North Carolina lawmakers are attempting to get rid of state inspections in their state claiming it will save money. But what about the lives that are lost? The American Automobile Association claims that accidents are reduced by 27 percent in states that require a safety inspection. A safety inspection program is designed to keep unsafe vehicles off of our roads. Across the country experts have claimed that this might not be the case. Saving money seems to be the top priority. Although some Pennsylvanians may disagree I believe that it is well worth the money to ensure that the vehicles our roads are safe and our state is one of the fortunate states to help us to keep our vehicles safe. Take the time to find an inspection station that will do a thorough check of your vehicle. It will pay off in many ways. Happy Motoring.

National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month By Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton National Prostate Cancer Awareness Month is observed every September in the United States by health experts, advocates, and individuals concerned with men’s prostate health. Designating a month for the disease serves the purpose of increasing public awareness of the importance of prostate health and screenings, educating about risk factors and symptoms, and advocating for further research on prostate health issues. According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), other than skin cancer, prostate cancer is the most common cancer in American men, with about one in eight men being diagnosed with prostate cancer during their lifetime. The ACS estimates that there will be over 11,000 new cases of prostate cancer diagnosed in Pennsylvania in 2021. There are several risk factors associated with prostate cancer, including family history, race, diet, etc., but the most common factor is age. Prostate cancer occurs mainly in older men. About six in ten cases are diagnosed in men aged 65 or older, and it is rare before age 40. The average age at the time of diagnosis is about 66. While there are a lot of risk factors for prostate cancer, there are also good survival statistics associated with the disease. Survival rates for prostate cancer are very high. According to statistics from the National Institute of Health, 3.1 million men are estimated to be living with prostate cancer in the United States. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we use radiation therapy to treat prostate cancer. Radiation therapy is used to treat prostate cancer painlessly and non-invasively. During treatment, high-energy X-rays are delivered to the prostate cancer safely and effectively. Side effects are usually minimal, and most patients return to their normal activities following each treatment. There are two types of radiation therapy for prostate cancer. External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is administered with a linear accelerator (LINAC) that generates an X-ray beam. The treatment is safe and will not burn or hurt you. EBRT destroys cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. A second treatment

option for prostate cancer is brachytherapy, a type of internal radiation therapy in which a radiation oncologist inserts high-energy radioactive seeds into the prostate. The seeds emit radiation to the immediate surrounding cancer cells over several months but will not make your body radioactive. After about a year, the radioactive material degrades and the seeds that remain are harmless. Radiation therapy serves as an effective treatment for prostate cancer, working within cancer cells to damage their ability to multiply and spread. External radiation therapy treatments, such as EBRT, are delivered daily Monday through Friday and each treatment session only takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Several factors determine candidacy for radiation therapy treatment including the stage of the cancer, potential side effects, age, and overall health. Sometimes a combination of treatments is the best plan for treating prostate cancer. Before you make your final decision about your prostate cancer treatment, consider radiation therapy. Delta Variant and How It's Changing the COVID-19 Landscape By Hannah Ropp
Timothy Friel, MD, Chair, Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases for Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) and Alex Benjamin, MD, LVHN Infection Control Officer, answer your questions about COVID-19 and delta variant It’s hard to believe that COVID-19 has been a part of our lives for almost 18 months. But, as we continue to learn more about the virus, new questions emerge. Timothy Friel, MD, Chair, Department of Medicine, Infectious Diseases for Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) and Alex Benjamin, MD, Chief Infection Control Officer, LVHN, answer some of your top questions about COVID-19, the delta variant and COVID-19 vaccines in a recent COVID-19 Town Hall on Facebook.
How many people in Pennsylvania have received COVID-19 vaccines? Benjamin says that Pennsylvania has one of the higher vaccination rates in the country with nearly 52 percent of the state’s population fully vaccinated. How is the delta variant different than other strains of COVID-19? Friel describes the delta variant as a mutation of COVID-19 that first surfaced in India. It is now the dominant strain in many parts of the world, including the United States. This variant is up to 50 percent more contagious than the original strain of COVID-19 and poses a significant risk for those who are unvaccinated. Are we seeing the delta variant in our area? Friel says that the delta variant is now the predominant strain of COVID-19. It makes up over 80 percent of cases nationwide. He says that our area is no exception and we are seeing more cases of the
delta variant in our region. Currently five percent of all COVID-19 cases in Pennsylvania are the delta strain, however, that number goes up each week. How can we stop other variants from forming? According to Friel, the best strategy we have to stop the spread of COVID-19 and the prevention of new variants is to make sure people are vaccinated. “Vaccines save lives, they prevent new cases and they prevent unnecessary transmission. research has shown we can reduce their risk of falling significantly. In order to identify seniors who are risk of falling, we have a Falls Risk Screen. With the screen, we can give you an indication of your overall risk of having a fall. For people who are at risk of falling, we can do a thorough assessment to identify issues that contribute to the fall risk such as balance, weakness, pain. This allows us to develop a comprehensive Falls Prevention Program including balance and strength training that has been shown by the research to reduce falls. I got a phone call the other day. A local chiropractor said, ”I have to retire, I’m 65 and my hands are so arthritic after 43 years of adjusting patients”. Then he asked, “How are your hands? You are busier than me and you are 64?” I told him this story. Thirty years ago my hands were inflamed and numb. I went to Dr. Richard Lung, a local plastic surgeon to see if I needed carpal tunnel surgery. He said from pushing on people’s spines 60 hours per week, that my hands were hot and swollen. He advised, “Soak your both hands in buckets of ice water every night for 90 days and wear two wrist splints to
bed so you can’t curl your wrists when you sleep”. I did and all my pain went away. So then I took his advice a step further. I thought if I continue to adjust hundreds of people per week, my pain will return. So I didn’t ice them anymore, but I continued to use the wrist splints; every night, for the past 30 years. So my hands are great! No pain, no arthritis, no numbness. So I’m not even considering retiring. As you read this, if you use your hands a lot, they will break down. If they hurt, soak them in buckets of ice water every night. Not for just a week, but 90 days. I will wear the wrist splints forever. I thank Dr. Lung. You helped me to have a long, productive career. I hope I have 20 more years in me!

Are COVID-19 vaccines effective against the delta variant? Friel says early numbers indicate that both Pfizer and Moderna vaccines are holding up very well against the delta variant with efficacies in the high 80 or low 90 percentile range when it comes to preventing infection. The Johnson & Johnson vaccine has efficacy levels dipping down into the 60 percentile range, but, there is still protection. Friel says the biggest benefit of the vaccines is that they are still up to 95 percent effective in preventing severe complications or hospitalization if you do become infected. I am still amazed, and dismayed, that so many non-immunocompromised individuals refuse to get vaccinated. What are you waiting for? Imagine if, way back when, some 40% of the US population refused to get the polio vaccine. Non-vaxxer excuses are all over the place. Some are undoubtedly influenced by QAnon-type conspiracy theories that populate social media platforms such as Facebook. Online charlatans claim that COVID vaccines contain tracking microchips and allegedly “prove” their idiocy with magnets. Say these whackos: get vaccinated and you will be controlled by either Bill Gates or some government agency. Logical indeed. Some believe that teens are protected from COVID. Not true. Hospitals are filling up with young people infected with the delta strain. And how about this excuse for not being vaccinated: “I don’t have the time”. Really? Walk into your neighborhood CVS or
