History of Veterans Day
Veterans Day, formerly known as Armistice Day, was originally set as a U.S. legal holiday to honor the end of World War I, which officially took place on November 11, 1918. In legislation that was passed in 1938, November 11 was "dedicated to the cause of world peace and to be hereafter celebrated and known as 'Armistice Day.'" As such, this new legal holiday honored World War I veterans. In 1954, after having been through both, World War II and the Korean War, the 83rd U.S. Congress -- at the urging of the veterans service organizations -- amended the Act of 1938 by striking out the word "Armistice" and inserting the word "Veterans." With the approval of this legislation on June 1, 1954, Nov. 11 became a day to honor American veterans of all wars. In 1968, the Uniforms Holiday Bill ensured three-day weekends for federal employees by celebrating four national holidays on Mondays: Washington's Birthday, Memorial Day, Veterans Day, and Columbus Day. Under this bill, Veterans Day was moved to the fourth Monday of October. Many states did not agree with this decision and continued to celebrate the holiday on its original date. The first Veterans Day under the new law was observed with much confusion on Oct. 25, 1971. Finally on September 20, 1975, President Gerald R. Ford signed a law which returned the annual observance Imagine building your homestead on scenic Grove St. of Veterans Day to its original date of Nov. 11, beginning in 1978. Since then, at the edge of charming Orwigsburg. This 14 ACRE parcel the Veterans Day holiday has been is neighboring exclusive, large acreage country estates. observed on Nov. 11. The Benefits of Shopping Small This Holiday Season
Holiday Guide
2021
(NewsUSA) – Small Business Saturday casts a national spotlight each year on independently-owned businesses, which includes a wide variety of shopping options, from the mom-and-pop storefronts in your local community to home-based e-commerce businesses. Since its inception in 2010, Small Business Saturday spending has reached an estimated $103 billion, according to American Express. Motivated by the potential for growth, small businesses across the country are taking advantage of this movement with more enthusiasm year after year, given strong consumer response. GS1 US, an information standards organization that helps small brands identify their products for commerce, recently spoke with small business owners who have run successful Small Business Saturday campaigns. They discussed three big benefits to buying from small businesses this holiday season.
Unique Products Consumers are hungry for a wide variety of unique products, which provides prime motivation for shoppers to support small businesses. “People shop small because it makes them feel good. It allows people

to discover interesting products, and feel like they are helping a real person, as opposed to a big corporation,” says Andrew Jacobs, CEO of JAM Paper and Envelope, an e-commerce paper company. According to a study by the NFIB and American Express last year, nearly two-thirds of online shoppers (65 percent) are likely to seek out small, independently-owned retailers. This helps unique products from small brands compete right alongside products from larger, well-known brands. “It’s so important for small businesses to be recognized in order to compete with big businesses,”

Panorama Community Magazine says Lisa Burginger, founder of Qubits Toy, Inc., a company that makes colorful building sets for kids. “For our company, it’s our busiest time of the year.” Community Support For many consumers, shopping small is driven by the desire to support their local communities. When consumers spend $100 at a local business, roughly $68 stays in their local economy, according to a recent Civics Economy study. The local impact, which helps benefit food, service and civic organizations within the community, could be 50% larger than a similar purchase from a regional or national retailer. “I believe people want to support their communities,” says Allison White, founder of Scout Cart, a unique personal utility cart company. “They often know the owners of local small businesses and businesses often provide employment opportunities for the young adults in our families.”
True Connections Small businesses can use the extra consumer attention to nurture brand loyalty beyond just one day. According to the 2018 Small Business Saturday Consumer Insights Survey, 96 percent of consumers who reported shopping on Small Business Saturday say the day makes them want to shop “small” all year long, not just during the holiday season. “Small businesses can give you special services, discounts, and oneto-one customer service that big businesses can’t always offer,” says Burginger. Increasingly, shopping is about a shared experience – the small businesses that create memorable moments for consumers will likely experience growth. “The next generation is looking for more than just a product, they want an experience,” says Travis Wayne, product manager, TEKLYNX, a barcode software company that is certified as a GS1 US Solution Partner,
a program that helps small businesses find qualified partners to help them reach more consumers. “When you walk into a hardware store, for example, or if you shop online, it’s more about personalizing that experience and ensuring that the consumers get what they need. Some businesses teach instructional courses on a product, or supply some kind of educational information. It’s about going above and beyond consumer expectations with the hopes of increasing the sale and maintaining a customer for life.” Taking advantage of Small Business Saturday is just one way small brands are setting themselves up for growth. Beyond the holiday season, businesses of all sizes need to think strategically to succeed in a competitive retail landscape. Visit www.gs1us.org/smallbusiness to access research from GS1 US on the ambitions and challenges of small businesses, watch videos featuring entrepreneurs, and learn more about their growth journeys. Scent-imental: Holiday Smells Evoke Happy Memories (NewsUSA) – Does a whiff of cinnamon bring back memories of your grandmother’s kitchen? Is the smell of a fir tree unalterably linked to Christmas morning? The sense of smell is uniquely connected to memories, especially during the holiday season. The connection between smell and memory is strong because it is so immediate. In fact, did you know that the sense of smell is the only one of the five senses that bypasses the rational part of the brain and goes directly to the limbic area, where memory and emotion are? Which is why when you smell something, it immediately takes you on a walk down memory lane, allowing you to recall the emotion associated with that scent from the first time you smelled it.This direct connection between smell and the brain is how aromas become strong memory triggers, often without our awareness until we smell the same scent again. Now think about how that plays out in your home. When you or a guest walks in, the strongest first impression will be the scent, and it will be the number-one thing that is sure to be remembered. It’s not a detail you want to overlook!Part of the fun of holiday festivities is revisiting the

sights, sounds, and smells of the season.During the holidays, many Americans bring Christmas trees and greenery into their homes to create a festive atmosphere and evoke memories of wonderful smells from childhood of hanging wreaths and visits to tree farms. However, real greens are not always a feasible option due to allergies, pets, mess, and many other factors. More and more families in the U.S. are displaying artifical Christmas trees and greenery, and products such as ScentSicles Scented Ornaments provide an alternative that offers the beauty of holiday smells that bring the memories home. How to Make the Holidays Less Stressful for the Whole Family (Family Features) Between changes in routine and visiting family (or having them visit you), the holidays can be emotionally overwhelming for children and adults alike, even in “normal times.” Add in inclement weather, the desire for a perfect holiday and parents still working, and you have a perfect cocktail for emotional meltdowns. “The key to enjoying whatever this holiday season brings is to acknowledge the range of emotions the entire family may be feeling and hold space for those feelings,” said Ariel Acosta from KinderCare’s Inclusion Services team. “By working on a few key things now before the heightened expectations and busyness set in, families can build a toolbox of skills that will help make the season less stressful for everyone.” Consider these tips to help families prepare for a less stressful holiday season.

Plan Ahead for This Year’s Holiday Vacation (Family Features) Whether your family counts a holiday vacation among your treasured traditions or you’re anticipating a holiday getaway for the first time, getting an early start on your planning can help ensure yourtrip is filled with good tidings and joy. Know what you want to spend. If you’re planning to open your wallet a little wider for this trip than you have in the past, you’re not alone. A survey by American Express Travel found more than 60% of travelers are planning to spend more on trips in 2021 since they missed out on travel in 2020. Setting your budget now can help you make choices about things like accommodations and activities while giving you some extra time to save. Working off a budget from the start can also help you take advantage of book now, pay later options that may give you added savings or incentives. Be conscious of high-demand destinations. Popular travel spots tend to fill up fast, so if you’re considering visiting a high-demand location, be aware of how crowds might affect your plans for everything from wait times at attractions to rental cars

and more. According to vacation rental company Vrbo, prime warm-weather destinations where families can spend the holidays together are already facing lower availability for homes, including Florida and Hawaii beaches. Similarly, Maui, Hawaii, has less than 20% of homes available during Christmas week. Ski spots also see a large share of holiday travel, so be prepared if you’re planning on a holiday hot spot. Manage against the unexpected. Despite all the advantages of planning ahead, it’s impossible to predict unknown variables like the weather when you make travel arrangements months ahead of time. Continued from page 13 Book lodging early. With travel volume up and availability for accommodations already trending downward for the holiday season, consider making reservations sooner than later. “We typically see December bookings peak in October and November, but families are locking in their holiday vacation plans much earlier than usual,” said Melanie Fish, Vrbo’s travel expert. “Vacation homes have been quickly scooped up during every popular travel season this year, so it’s no surprise families are planning ahead to ensure they have a great place to spend the holidays together.” Look into local events. In this pandemic age, many attractions and activities have new guidelines, including altered operating schedules, occupancy limits and reservation systems. You can typically find the latest information on websites or by calling ahead. Take these measures into consideration as you’re creating your trip itinerary and organizing advanced reservations. Consider how the holidays will affect your packing. Traveling during the holidays may mean a different approach to your typical vacation packing. Especially if you’re traveling with children, you’ll need to make space for beloved holiday traditions such as gifts or a visit from a certain jolly old elf. Too Much Stuff? Give Kids Experiential Gifts This Holiday Season (NewsUSA) – If, like many parents, you struggle with what to get your kids for the holidays, consider thinking outside the box and giving them gifts that will expand their horizons. Underscoring the importance of combining adventure and education, experts say that school is much easier when kids can draw upon skills they’ve learned through outside experiences. “Experiential gifts can teach a new, lifelong skill, provide a fun, new way to spend family time, and build memories together in a way that no toy or gadget could,” says Emily Levitt, vice president of Education for Sylvan Learning. To this point, Levitt encourages parents to get creative this holiday season, and give the gift of learning. “These kinds of gifts are special not just for your child, but for everyone who participates. And I can’t think of a better way to spend the holidays.” To that end, here are a few holiday suggestions for parents that kids will not only love, but learn from as well: The Science of Cooking. Your little chef will not only get to make and eat delicious food that they’ll be able to recreate at home, but will learn how to incorporate math, since this intrinsic

Whether it’s designing a video game from scratch after school, programming a LEGO robot on Saturdays, or engineering seriously cool super structures, your child will be learning something new every time and will be delighted to try the next series of courses as soon as they finish! * Giving the gift of music. Music lessons are a great way to uncover a talent and passion that is both creative and math-based. From guitar to piano or maybe even the sax, you can give
kids the option to choose which instrument to explore. Both music and math go hand-in-hand because they both involve patterns, ratios, fractions, proportions, and memorization. * Getting moving. Kids with a ton of energy will enjoy classes such as gymnastics or rock climbing. These activities not only teach kids about the human body, but are developmental sports, which require a progression of steps. (Family Features) The holidays, as well as birthdays and other celebrations, are often difficult for anyone who has experienced the death of a loved one, particularly during the first year of adjusting to life without them. The holiday season may result in a renewed sense of grief, especially as well-intentioned individuals are encouraging those who are grieving to participate in traditional festivities. While there can be joy in being together with family and friends, the holidays can also bring feelings of sadness, loss and emptiness. For those who find themselves struggling with grief during the holidays and other celebrations, consider these ideas from Remembering a Life, an online resource from the experts at the National Funeral Directors Association. pain and emotions won't make it go away. Don't be afraid to talk about grief with others. Confiding in close family and friends can help a grieving person feel heard and understood. Establish Boundaries During the Holidays Friends and family may encourage a grieving person to participate in the holiday just as they normally would. While these intentions are typically good, it is important for the bereaved to set boundaries and focus on what they want. While grieving, one should openly and honestly discuss wishes with friends and family and clarify what they are comfortable with and have the emotional bandwidth to do. Acknowledge the Loss Families can find ways to honor their loved one's physical absence during holiday celebrations by incorporating their spirit into celebrations and holiday traditions. Examples of this could be decorating ornaments in ways that are symbolic of a loved one, cooking their favorite meal or making a memorial Eat-In • Take-Out • Delivery donation to a favorite charity. (BPT) - Many people are happy to welcome back friends and family in their homes again. In anticipation of the holiday season, you might consider updating your house now, so entertaining is a joy in the many months of celebration to come. Home improvements that add function and support when entertaining are key. Whether you'll be hosting a grand holiday party with out-of-town guests or an intimate affair with local loved ones, these top improvements will prepare your home for holiday merriment. 1) Refresh the fireplace The quintessential holiday gathering always seems to be set around a warm and welcoming fireplace. you have one in your home, consider getting maintenance done now before the holiday rush. A tune-up, chimney cleaning and glass-door cleaning will ensure your fireplace is ready to inspire guests to cozy up and create memories. Beyond proper functioning, you can also update your fireplace to create a new aesthetic. If the surrounding brick, rock or tile is dated, consider special masonry or tile paint that can help you refresh the materials with a contemporary neutral color such as gray, beige or white. You can also paint the mantle to accent your new fireplace surround for a cohesive look that will serve as a backdrop for holiday photographs for years to come. 2) Research functional additions Adding a guest bathroom or wet bar is sure to impress visitors and add to your home's value. But this may seem impossible in spaces without belowfloor drainage for plumbing - like a basement or garage. A simple, affordable solution is above-floor plumbing systems from Saniflo that avoid the hassle and expense of busting through concrete

Panorama Community Magazine to create conventional drainage or installing a sewage ejector system. For example, the Saniaccess 2 from Saniflo is ideal for creating an additional half bathroom virtually anywhere, thanks to a 1/2-horsepower macerator pump system. Above-floor systems like this can process waste from sinks and toilets before pumping it to the nearest drain line that connects to the home's septic tank or a sewer system. 3) Create a contemporary kitchen The kitchen may be the heart of the home, but it's also the hub of the holiday season. From roasting that golden turkey to baking and decorating favorite holiday treats, the kitchen is a functional gathering place for your family and guests. Simple updates can make a big difference in style and functionality, such as enhancing organization and adding seating options. If you want bigger changes without the expense of a complete remodel, consider thoughtful updates that

revive your kitchen with notable style. Painting the existing cabinets and adding new hardware provide a visual facelift that revives the room. New countertops are nice, but sometimes just adding a new backsplash transforms the space, plus makes for easy cleanup during sometimes messy holiday cooking. You might also consider adding an island with running water and a sink. An above-floor plumbing solution, like the Sanivite from Saniflo, can create that functionality where no below-floor drain currently exists. 4) Define dining areas Whether you have an open concept home or the layout features a formal dining room, it's important to update eating spaces. After all, enjoying food together is one of the crowning events of holiday get-togethers. Painting the space in a modern hue provides a big visual impact without much cost or effort. An area rug can also redefine the dining room and pull elements together. New linens add a holiday vibe.

More casual eating spaces can benefit from a refresh as well. Tidy up breakfast nooks and buffet tables so they are ready to use. Stools for countertop spaces create an ideal place for cooking, casual noshing and conversation. If you're hosting children, you may want to set up tables and other areas for them to eat and play games. The holiday season brings family and friends together. Now that inperson celebrations are being planned again, there's no better time to focus on home improvements that guests will appreciate and you will love.

Pomegranate & Wild Rice Salad INGREDIENTS • 2-3 medium (~2 and 1/2 cups) sweet potatoes, peeled & chopped • 1 1/2 tablespoon olive oil • Freshly cracked pepper and salt • 1 package (4.3 ounces) Long Grain and Wild Rice Mix • 1 cup POM POMS Pomegranate Fresh Arils • 1/2 cup sliced almonds • 8-10 oz mixed greens lettuce • 2-4 oz. Crumbled goat cheese or feta LEMON PEPPER DRESSING • 1 tablespoon honey • 1 large lemon (2 tablespoons juice, 1/4 teaspoon zest) • 3/4 tablespoon red wine vinegar • 2 tablespoons olive oil • 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard • 1/2 teaspoon dried oregano • Freshly cracked pepper & salt, to taste
these carefully so you don't overcook the potatoes.
DIRECTIONS 1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees F. Peel and chop the sweet potato into small chunks. Toss the potato chunks in olive oil and sprinkle generously with salt and pepper. Toss to coat.

3. Meanwhile, prepare the wild rice either according to the package directions if you are using a package mix OR according to the directions in the recipe included in the blog post (for a homemade version of seasoned wild rice). If you make the homemade wild rice, start with making that before roasting the sweet potato so they will be done around the same time. 4. Combine the roasted sweet potato with the cooked wild rice in a large bowl and place in the fridge while prepping the dressing. 5. For the dressing combine all of the ingredients in a mason jar of small bowl. Place the lid on the mason jar and shake (or whisk in the bowl) until combined. Valuable Cooking Collectibles By Dr. Lori Verderame Collectors are known to look in the basement or attic for coveted family heirlooms but the kitchen may be the best place to find valuable objects from the past. Kitchen objects of old from fine china to appliances are popular with collectors and can hold their value well. Look for good design elements and good condition to identify value in cooking collectibles. Some of the most coveted, popular, and valuable vintage objects associated with cooking and kitchens are the most commonplace too. These collectible objects range from aprons to zesters and are making a strong market impact. Utensils, flatware, and vintage appliances all have interest to vintage estate sale and yard sale shoppers, thrifters, and collectors. Collectors are interested in how food was made in the days of lore and that’s why Victorian food processors and mid century modern can openers still bring good prices on the collectibles market but when it comes to really valuable collectibles, a few objects stand out. What cooking collectibles are valuable? Which cooking collectibles are popular? In addition to vintage appliances to
make the chore of cooking easier, cookbooks are always collectible and sought after with collectors as are serving spoons, platters, trays, and flatware. All things being equal, some of the most popular cooking collectibles is also the most obvious. After cookbooks from all periods and regions, it is the dishes that win the day. I’ve heard that entertaining is a dying art form but the objects of entertaining are certainly gaining in popularity. The large fine china serving sets are slowing moving out of fashion but collectors are still looking for the big names in fine china wares like Haviland for Limoges, Lenox, Herend, Royal Copenhagen, Royal Doulton, etc. My video call appraisals with clients, young and old ali ke, express to me that clients are busy searching online, at thrift stores, and at estate sales to find fine china pieces to add to their collections. Seasoned collectors are busy telling their grandchildren about the value in fine china. As a result, many fine china sets are staying in families for the next generation. This is a fine china collectible category that is enhanced by offerings, sales, and specialty websites found
all over the internet. Keen collectors who must have an elusive gravy boat to complete a large china dinnerware service are no more active collectors of fine china than those collectors who only want two teacups in a particular pattern by a major or little known manufacturer. It is all about taste. What do they look for? What commands high prices? Specialty patterns, hand painting or gilt, an established maker, and quality. Collecting just a few individual fine china pieces is en-vogue now. Mixing Continued on page 31

The performance showcases celebrated pianist and arranger Mac Frampton accompanied by a six-piece ensemble titled the ThreePenny Symphony. For the second concert of November the Greater Hazleton Concert Series, Inc. presents a live performance of VIVA Trio. During difficult times of the 2020-2021 season, VIVA Trio presented a well-received virtual performance for last year’s membership. VIVA Trio is comprised of three Canadian sopranos: Katya Tchoubar, Erin Fisher, and Anna Bateman. They are an awardwinning group who has performed throughout Canada, the United States, and Europe. Singing everything from classics to pop songs, this trio is unstoppable. Their powerful voices, lush harmonies, and charismatic stage presence, not to mention their dazzling gowns, will leave you breathless. They have headlined numerous concerts internationally and have also performed for several high-end fundraising events in support of children and youth with intellectual disabilities. Katya Tchoubar is a founder and member of the VIVA Trio. Her singing career began 16 years ago, after graduating from the Royal Conservatory of Music, while completing her post
graduate studies from the University of Toronto. She is a faculty member at Toronto’s Royal Conservatory of Music, as well as a Russian Diction Coach at the University of Toronto. And some collectors seek out fine china specialty pieces like oyster plates, trays, bone dishes and other objects from the past. No matter the size of the collection, fine china is sought after with today’s collectors and they are paying good money to get the style and pattern they want. Values vary widely based on manufacturer or maker, pattern, condition, etc. Either way, fine china remains a desirable collectible. Another cooking collectible that has been growing in popularity is cookware and ovenware. A mid century modern example of this trend is the collectibilty of Corningware. CorningWare ovenware is produced from Pyroceram, a ceramicglass material that can withstand major thermal shock. It is synonymous with the look of America’s mid 1900s kitchens. Some of the valuable patterns of Corningware are based on simple designs like the Blue Cornflower pattern introduced and manufactured from circa 1958-1988. It is a blue flower pattern on a white base in a country manner. Today’s collectors are grabbing it up off the estate sale, yard sale, and thrift store shelves and adding it to their own collections or reselling it online for top dollar. Blue Cornflower pattern pieces were made in large numbers and was the quintessential Corningware pattern, a trademark of sorts. Corningware is a mainstay with collectors and chefs alike. Corningware continues to produce other decorative patterns in the 1970s and beyond but the Cornflower Blue pattern makes collectors dig in their pockets and pay for the look of the kitchens of the 1950s. While collectors amass many objects from the kitchen, these are just a few of the trends that I see in the market and are discussed with my fans, clients, and followers on social media and beyond. It goes to show you that cooking collectibles are still hot. November is Senior Pet Wellness Month
by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital
With cooler weather just around the corner, it is time to give a little extra thought to your older pets. It always amazes me how many people think that old age is a disease in and of itself. As long as your pet is healthy, there is no reason that an older pet can't be just as happy as the young ones. If you own an “old” dog or cat who seems to be slowing down, drinking more, or urinating more, don't just accept it. Find out why and fix it! Nearly all of the problems that haunt many of our older patients can be helped with changes in diet, nutritional supplements, and other relatively easy treatments. November is Senior Pet Wellness Month. We are offering a Senior Pet Program that includes a full Exam and Office Visit, a comprehensive blood panel plus CBC, a full urinalysis, November is . . . and a thyroid test with a 10% discount for any dog or cat who is 7 years or Make sure your older pet older. PTSD Service Dogs Can Help Change Veterans' Lives (BPT) - Imagine nightmares limiting you to a few hours of sleep a night, feeling too scared to drive or take a walk, and staying inside your home week after week due to anxiety. This was the reality for Tishawna of St. Louis, Missouri, a veteran with posttraumatic stress disorder, commonly referred to as PTSD. "I can go weeks without leaving my house. I have an 11-year-old child still at home and there are things she wants to do and I feel like I'm letting her down," said Tishawna. "PTSD has taken a lot of my life." Tishawna is not alone. Over 3 million veterans suffer from PTSD. Having tried a variety of mental health treatments with limited success, she then learned that PTSD service dogs are proven to reduce the symptoms of PTSD, even when traditional therapies cannot. PTSD service dogs are not the same as emotional support, therapy or companion dogs. Like service dogs for the blind, deaf and physically disabled, PTSD service dogs for veterans must be specially trained to help their handler perform tasks they cannot otherwise perform on their own. Unfortunately, it costs over $20,000 on average to train and care for one service dog before it's placed with a military veteran. Most veterans are unable to afford this cost and depend on the generosity of organizations who make this life-changing option available to those who need it most. Each year, less than 1% of individuals in need of a service dog that apply for one are able to actually get one. That's why when Tishawna learned she was approved to receive a service dog from Got Your Six Support Dogs, with the help of Dog Chow and its "Service Dog Salute" campaign, she felt like she won the lottery. For veterans struggling with PTSD and other issues, getting a service dog provides hope of a new beginning. Tishawna cried the first time she met her service dog, Archie, a moment that is captured in Dog Chow's new documentary short film titled "Even Heroes Need Heroes," available to view at DogChow.com/Service. The film follows three veteran and service dog pairs as they learn how to cope with symptoms of PTSD, such as night terrors, emotional detachment and hypervigilance. "Tishawna was always in the house,

looking at the four corners of the walls depressed, just wasn't motivated at all," said Karl, Tishawna's husband. "It had a big effect on our marriage and our family. Now with Archie, I see her smiling. I hear her excited, like hey, let's go outside today, let's go for a walk, let's go for a ride." Thanks to Archie and his special training, Tishawna is becoming more independent. She's sleeping better and having fewer panic attacks. She even has started driving again and feels much closer to her daughter. "Archie has really made a big difference. Some people say, 'Oh, he's just a dog.' No, Archie's like my son. He feels me. He calms me," she said. Through its "Service Dog Salute" program, Dog Chow supports organizations that train service dogs for veterans with PTSD, including Got Your Six Support Dogs and Tony LaRussa's Animal Rescue Foundation (ARF), donating $850,000 since the initiative began in 2018. In addition to donating funds, they have worked with members of Congress on federal legislation supporting veterans with PTSD. Passed with broad bipartisan support in 2021, the PAWS for Veterans Therapy Act will create a pilot program in the United States Department of Veterans Affairs to train and connect service dogs to veterans with PTSD. Like many families of the day, their successes were tempered with tragedy. Their brother Cyril died during infancy; the youngest brother Nicolas, who was considered a bright prospect himself, committed suicide after leaving college with an illness. Henry contracted tuberculosis in 1917 and passed away at age 30. Christy contracted tuberculosis after being accidently gassed during a training exercise during WWI and passed away at age 45. Stan and Harry Coveleski Around the same time the Mathewsons were playing ball in Scranton, the Coveleski family in Shamokin were budding pitchers in their own right. They were two of eight children born to Russian-Polish immigrants Anthony and Ann, who settled in Shamokin in the 1870s. Two other brothers, Frank and John, played in the minors, and the oldest brother Jacob died during the Spanish-American War. Stan, the younger brother, was the more accomplish major leaguer and was inducted to the Hall of Fame in 1969. He won 215 games over 3000 innings pitched with 38 career shutouts. He specialized in the spitball; when foreign substances were banned in 1920, he was one of 17 pitchers allowed to continue throwing the pitch. He pitched for the Athletics, Indians, Senators,

Stan Coveleski died at age 94 in 1984; he is a member of the National Baseball Hall of Fame and the Polish-American Hall of Fame, and he is local legend in his adopted home of South Bend, Indiana where a stadium is named after him. Harry, the older brother, had an excellent career for the Phillies, Reds, and Tigers. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by injuries. During his career he was 81-55 with 2.39 ERA. His career was highlighted by beating the NY Giants 3 times in 5 days at the end of the 1907 season, which allowed the Cubs to catch and pass the Giants for NL Championship. His performance was remembered over 100 years later by Barbara Thorson’s comic book series I Kill Giants. The comics were later made into a movie and included a war hammer named Coveleski in his honor. Steve, Jack, Jim, and Mike O’Neill The O’Neill brothers from the Minooka section of Scranton were born to Irish immigrants Michael and Mary. The older brothers Mike and Jack were also born in Ireland. Steve was the most successful of the brothers. He spent 17 years in majors as a catcher for Indians, Red Sox, Yankees, and Browns. In 1920, he was a World Series Champion on the Indians where he caught Stan Coveleski. He caught over 1500 games and is rated by baseball historian Jay Jaffe as one of the best 60 catchers in baseball history. After his playing days he moved on the coaching and managing. In 1945, he managed the Tigers to the World Series Championship. He had a .559 winning percentage as a manager for the Indians, Tigers, Reds, and Phillies. He died in 1962 at age 70. Jack was also a catcher and spent 5 years in the majors catching 303 games for St. Louis, Chicago, and Boston of the National League. According to local baseball historian Bill Kashatus, Jack teamed up with brother Mike in St Louis as the first brother battery in baseball history. They talked to each other in their
native Gaelic language to give signs. Mike pitched for 4 years in the majors to a fine 2.73 era over 85 career games. Jim had the shortest career of the brothers for the Washington Senators, playing 109 games over 2 seasons. The record for brothers is 5 by the Delahantys.

Where Have All The New Cars Gone? By Thomas R. Buff
570.454.1161 • 1.800.554.2645
570.454.8500 We have all driven past new car dealerships and slowed down to admire the bright and shiny, sparkling and thus eye-catching new cars and trucks that are strategically placed for all to see. New models that spark our interest prompt a quick turnaround to check out the sticker price. But for the past year and a half that has not been the case. What used to be a sea of vehicles is now a stretch of blacktop, nothing to admire but an empty lot. Where are all the new cars? What is driving the shortage? We all are aware that since the pandemic began many automakers were forced to close or cut their production due to the stay at home orders that brought virtually everything to a screeching halt. This caused repercussions ranging from decreased demand due to closures and lack of personnel at dealerships. Automakers attempted to increase consumer confidence as dealers opened up through incentives and low finance rates. The vehicles that were on lots disappeared quickly. Manufactures could not respond to the increased demand and the rest as we can say is history in the making as never seen before.
593 W. Green Street, Hazleton
Although the demand for new vehicles has risen automakers are facing severe and persistent shortages of personnel and essential parts, mainly semiconductors. As we all know, todays cars are built with a smorgasbord of microchips onboard that operate almost every component in your car or truck. This global semiconductor shortage has caused many production lines to stop their operations. Without these essential parts the manufacturing comes to a screeching halt. Vehicle manufactures are also competing with other industries that are in dire need of microchips such as consumer electronics. Assembly lines in Asia and other countries that manufacture semiconductors have been slowed by lack of workers and materials that are needed thus causing a major backlog. For motorists that are in the market for a new or used car now it may be very difficult to find either one. Some analysts predict a shortfall in production of almost 8 million vehicles by the end of this year as Continued on next page

Panorama Community Magazine Continued from previous page the global microchip shortage continues. In fact, a survey of new and used car dealers across the United States revealed that most are dealing with inventories that are 64 percent down from last year. Both Automakers and the United States government are attempting to soften the blow and address the chip shortage problem. In fact, the Senate has recently passed a bill that promotes the investment of domestic microchip production. Many manufactures are still producing some models less the components that require the microchips. Thus, these cars are left sitting waiting for the parts to give them life. Some say the backlog could take two years to alleviate. So, should you order a new car today? If you are in the market for a new car, although it may not be on the dealer’s lot it is probably better not to wait. Work with your dealer and place an order. It may take some time but at minimum you will be on the waiting list. Better days are coming. Happy Motoring!

3 Credit Factors That Might Affect Your Auto & Homeowner's Insurance Premiums (BPT) - People think of their credit scores when measuring their "creditworthiness," like when they're looking to take out a loan, buy a home or open a new credit card. But did you know your insurance credit score can affect your auto insurance premiums? Before auto insurers take you on as a policyholder, they might use your credit score as an indicator to evaluate how likely you are to file a claim. If your score doesn't fit within their standards, you may get charged a higher premium. On the other hand, some insurance scores are loss ratio models, so they actually rank you based on the probability that you'll be a more profitable customer. According to Consumer Reports, the difference in auto insurance premiums related to credit scores can be significant. Drivers who only have "good" scores can end up paying from $68 to more than $500

more annually in comparison to those who have excellent scores. Moreover, it's important to know that your credit score is not the only factor that determines your premiums. According to Experian, if you live in Hawaii, California, Massachusetts or Michigan, auto insurers can't use your credit information to determine auto insurance premium. What matters most for your premiums - Insurance companies say that a person's credit scores help them to better predict their risk of insurance losses. While a score evaluation can seem like a broad judgment, there are often certain factors auto insurers will look at when determining your monthly premium, such as: How long you've had credit - This holds for most insurers and lenders. The longer a person has credit and keeps that credit in good standing, the higher their score. However, while people who've had credit longer can stand a good chance at getting a lower premium, it's not a guarantee. Insurance companies may still view you as a risk if you have an excellent credit but a poor driving history. Your payment history - When you sign up for auto insurance, your provider wants to gauge whether you are in financial stress or not and how likely it is that you will file a claim. So if you regularly pay your bills when they're due and don't have any missed or delinquent payments reflected on your score, you should be OK. The types of credit you have - Auto insurers want to see the correlation between various factors, such as a good credit mix and a lower credit risk. Get your credit report before you apply - Applying for insurance can feel daunting. When you have the right credit information in your hands, you should be able to get a better idea of what to expect. Generally, a strong credit score helps you qualify for lower insurance premiums when you shop around.

Still Time To Have Your Winter HVAC Maintenance Done
Panorama Community Magazine
By the HVAC experts at S.J Kowalski November is here and the holidays are around the corner. You still have time to get your HVAC system serviced for the winter. You want to make sure it’s working perfectly during the coldest part of the winter, when you need it most. Ideally, homeowners should have their HVAC system checked twice a year, once in spring to get it ready for the cooling season and before winter to insure that your home is warm and cozy all winter long. While regular maintenance is a key part of cost effectiveness and comfort, it also insures your heating source isn’t posing a risk to you, your home and your family. For example a crack in the furnace may go unseen, and most alarming odorless. That’s because a furnace crack can flood your home with odorless yet deadly carbon monoxide. You should have carbon monoxide detectors installed in your home, which will alert you to a problem. If you don’t have one S.J. Kowalski, Inc can provide you with one. If you have one we will change the batteries and make sure it is working properly. Additionally, electrical components can shortcircuit if not properly maintained. These can become fire hazards. Either way ignoring maintenance can be costly, and not just financially. Whether you are in the heat of summer or the dead of winter, a well maintained HVAC system is essential for staying comfortable and safe all year long. Call 570-455-2600 if you haven’t had your winter maintenance done yet.

National Lung Cancer Awareness Month November is National Lung Cancer Awareness Month. The event started back in 1995 as Lung Cancer Awareness Day. As the lung cancer community and the lung cancer movement grew, the awareness activities increased and the day matured into Lung Cancer Awareness Month. During the month, people throughout the country come together to support the lung cancer community and raise awareness about the disease. Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both lungs. These abnormal cells do not carry out the functions of normal lung cells and do not develop into healthy lung tissue. As they grow, the abnormal cells can form tumors and interfere

with the functioning of the lung, which provides oxygen to the body via the blood. According to the American Cancer Society, lung cancer is the second most common cancer in both men and women and accounts for about 25% of all cancer-related deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. The American Cancer Society estimates that there will be about 235,760 new cases of lung cancer diagnosed in the United States in 2021, with 11,170 of those cases being diagnosed in Pennsylvania. Although smoking is the main cause of lung cancer, lung cancer risk is also increased by exposure to
By Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton secondhand smoke, environmental exposures such as radon, workplace toxins (e.g., asbestos, arsenic), and air pollution. The risk of lung cancer can be reduced by quitting smoking and by eliminating or reducing exposure to secondhand smoke and environmental and workplace risk factors. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we use radiation therapy to treat lung cancer. Radiation therapy serves as an effective lung cancer treatment, working within cancer cells to damage their ability to multiply. During treatment, radiation is aimed at the lung cancer tumor and kills the cancer cells only in that area of the lung. Radiation therapy is delivered safely, painlessly, and does not involve surgery. Treatments do not require hospitalization and only take about 15 – 20 minutes. Side effects are usually mild and manageable with medication. The physician team and staff at the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton have extensive experience treating patients with radiation therapy. Combined with the linear accelerator's technology, Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton's expert team compassionately delivers high-quality cancer care. If you, or a loved one, have been diagnosed with lung cancer and would like to speak to a patient coordinator about your treatment options, please contact the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton at (570) 459-3460 or visit www. 4 Questions About the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period You Need Answered Right Now
Shown above and to the leftProvidence Place residents recently made dog and cat toys and delivered them locally to Hazleton Animal Shelter.
(BPT) - One of the most important times for healthcare coverage - and most dreaded - is upon us: the Medicare Annual Enrollment period. It started Oct. 15 and runs through Dec. 7. A recent poll conducted for ClearMatch™ Medicare, a brand dedicated to helping "de-complexify" Medicare, found that: 58% of Medicare members don't look forward to reviewing their Medicare plan, and 23% find reviewing their plan as delightful as having a colonoscopy! (There's an advertisement for shopping if we ever heard one!) For folks on Medicare, it can be a confusing time, but it doesn't have to be that way! Here are four of the most asked questions (and answers!): 1. How do you get money back every month? We've all seen the TV ads: the football players, former sit-com stars, folks who've sold grills or travel services. But, really, can you get $100 or even more
added back to your Social Security check monthly? Answer: It's a big "maybe." ClearMatch™ Medicare analyzed hundreds of thousands of Medicare Advantage members in 2020, and about 1% received $100 or more added back to their monthly checks. Approximately 24% did receive some money, though, and the average was about $43. This benefit, AKA the "give back," AKA the "Premium Reduction" depends on your zip code. And it's great to get money back, but choosing a Medicare Advantage plan based solely on the availability of the "give back" may mean you miss out on some other appealing benefits. Want to check your options? A ClearMatch™ Medicare insurance agent who's knowledgeable about your region will check for you, no strings attached. Just the truth. 2. Why should you care about the Annual Enrollment Period? If you're not celebrating your 65th birthday this year, Continued on page 51

Wake Up Refreshed
Simple ways to start your morning
(Family Features) Ready, set, go. Just as you would set off at the starting line of a race, this hectic pace is how mornings begin for many men and women. Instead of waking with dread to face another hectic morning, consider these tips for a healthier way to ease into your daily rituals. While these activities may require you to allow extra time, you may be pleased with the productive results. Meditate. A practice that has been around for thousands of years may still be one of the best stress busters for hurried mornings. To start, find a place in your home that is free of noise and distraction. Practice sitting still, with eyes closed, and focus only on your breathing. Using deep, controlled breaths, try to steer your thoughts away from negative and stress-inducing thoughts. Stretch. While the most healthconscious person may opt for a morning sweat-a-thon, working in some stretches can also be beneficial. When you awake, think about oft-used muscles and extend each one for 15-30 seconds. Activate. Give your brain some fuel in the morning while also doing something nice for your mind. For example, journaling is a gentle way to ease into your morning and get your brain firing. If you can’t think of a topic, simply write down a few affirmations for the day, revisit a pleasant memory from your past or scribble down a goal for the week. Journaling can be an uplifting way to engage the mind and express gratitude for the day ahead. Find more tips for starting your day on the right foot at eLivingToday.com.
NOVEMBER 2021
Continued from page 49 or already enrolled in Medicare, for most people, the "AEP" is the only time of year when you can change your plan. Since it's not quite as fun as eating birthday cake, here are the reasons why you should even consider changing: * You've changed. Ask yourself some questions. Did your health change? Did you start a new prescription? Did you get a new doctor? Did your favorite doctor stop accepting your insurance? Did you move? Do you plan to travel more (or less) in 2022 than you did in 2021? If you answered yes to any one of these questions, there might be a Medicare Advantage plan that suits you better. * Plans change. Some plans have added benefits for next year (like more dental benefits, or telehealth, or others) and some have lowered their premiums. If you're curious, you might want to check. Want an honest, straightforward review? A ClearMatch™ Medicare agent will review your current plan, ask for and assess your current needs, and share your options. If your current plan meets your needs just fine, ClearMatch™ will say so. 3. How can I trust an agent will help me make the best decision for my healthcare?
The truth: A broker like ClearMatch™ receives commission from an insurance company when you enroll in a plan. That's why they can provide you service at no charge. However, ClearMatch™ Medicare does not alter recommendations based on commission (it's against their mission). And, since they get commission only if you stay in the plan they recommend, they only win if you're happy. 4. Can't I just work with my carrier directly and get it cheaper? An easy answer. NO. Medicare insurance is not like hotels or airlines. The individual plans and their prices - by law - must be consistent across brokers and insurance companies. If ClearMatch™ offers a plan from an insurance company, it will be the same plan and pricing, regardless of how you enroll. From time to time, ClearMatch™ might not work with a particular insurance company, and they'll tell you so. If you're interested in that provider, they'll even show you how to shop there. The benefit of dealing with ClearMatch™ Medicare is that their agents care, provide open and honest information, commit to listening to your needs, suggest a wide variety of solutions, and make sure you are satisfied.

5 Simple, Natural Ways to Boost Immunity (Family Features) Your body’s immune system protects against illness and infection, fighting off threats before you even know there’s a problem. Even though your immune system usually does its job automatically, you can give it a boost with habits that promote wellness and support immunity. Eat healthy fruits and vegetables. Although you may not be aware they contain flavonoids, these phytochemicals found in some fruits and veggies are a vital part of maintaining health. Flavonoids are found in colorful fruits and vegetables like cranberries and elderberries. When it comes to power foods, elderberries’ exceptional flavanol levels make them an immune system powerhouse. Especially important during cold and flu season, elderberries can also be enjoyed in a cup of warm tea for instant comfort. Reduce stress with outdoor activity. Keeping physically fit provides numerous health benefits such as reducing stress by being one with nature through taking a walk outside. The sun’s UV rays help your body produce vitamin D, which is important for your bones, blood cells and immune system, as well as helping absorb and use certain nutrients. Yoga and massage can also be used to help stimulate the immune system and promote well-being. Keep a regular sleep schedule. Sleep gives you an opportunity to recharge. This is when cellular regeneration and other healing is most efficient. Keeping a regular routine helps signal to your system that it’s time to rest so you can fall asleep easier and reap the whole-body benefits of a healthy sleep cycle. Wash hands frequently. Especially during the school year, when germs are rampant and easily carried from school to home, you can give your immune system a hand, literally, by frequently scrubbing away germs before they have the chance to attack. Rely on natural remedies. Modern, stressful lifestyles and exposure to environmental pollutants can put immune systems under pressure. However, some of your existing soothing rituals can Continued on next page

Continued from previous page actually support better health, too. One example is relaxing with a hot cup of tea. The natural and organic ingredients found in Buddha Teas provide numerous health benefits. Options like Mushroom Wellness, Divine Immunity, Elderberry Tea and Reishi Mushroom blends all contain immunity-boosting ingredients. While they’re not an obvious ingredient, mushrooms have been incorporated into healing practices for thousands of years for their immune-boosting, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant-rich properties. There are several powerful medicinal mushrooms but one stand-out is the reishi mushroom, known as the “mushroom of immortality” and “divine plant of longevity.” This antiinflammatory powerhouse is known to promote healthy cell growth and healthy blood pressure, along with improving immune function. Learn more about boosting your immunity naturally at buddhateas.com. A Golden Way to Get Better Sleep While golden milk has become a trendy
beverage of choice, this comforting, herb-filled blend is actually ancient. For thousands of years, golden milk has been an Ayurvedic ritual, with Indian families enjoying a warm nightly cupful before bed. In Ayurvedic medicine, turmeric, the main component in golden milk, is thought to impart the energy of the sun to the body, hence its radiant, golden color. Turmeric’s documented healing properties impart substance to this traditional “elixir,” and have given golden milk a reputation as a healing cup of comfort. In addition to improving physical and mental well-being, regularly drinking golden milk has the potential to lessen your chance of becoming ill in the first place. It’s also an anti-inflammatory that supports healthy digestion and promotes calm. This turmeric-dominant blend includes ginger root and black pepper to aid digestion; ashwagandha to tonify, energize and calm; and cardamom, nutmeg and vanilla bean, all meant to encourage rejuvenation and peace. Consider an option like Buddha Teas’ CBD Organic Golden Milk, which includes a THC-free CBD isolate for added wellness benefits. Prepared by mixing with a warm cup of your favorite milk, the smooth, slightly sweet, pungent brew offers a soothing treat just before bed. Many people also enjoy golden milk prepared cold.

Edelweiss by John Degenhart, DC
I am going to tell you a story that will bring tears to your eyes. Do you know what was so special about my mom’s funeral last month? She planned the songs while her mind was still sharp. We helped her write her own obituary. My suggestion as you read this, as you get older, and you cannot work much anymore—have your family help you with these final arrangements. Let me tell you that story. My dad passed away about ten years ago. My mom and him struggled to pay the bills as they raised us twelve kids, and their love grew stronger as they knew they were always there for each other. My dad’s mom was from Tyrol, and his dad from Germany. My dad never cried much, but he would cry the few times he watched the movie “The Sound of Music”. It is about a family in Austria who does not want to get involved with World War II. The father of this family was a Captain, and he did not want to work for the Nazi’s. So as they plan their escape, the father plays a guitar and softly sings “Edelweiss” as his family sneaks up into the mountains. It probably brought back memories of my dad’s motherland, of honor and freedom. Well, back to my mom’s funeral mass. Each song we sang felt special because I know she chose each song for this final day. But guess what the last song was that we sang in church? Yeah, “Edelweiss”! As we sang it, it was my mom’s way of saying, “I am done on this earth now, I go to be with Dad”. I was busy in my office helping patients, and “Edelweiss” came on the radio. With tears of joy in my eyes I raised up my arms to the heavens and said, “I know Mom and Dad are happy together again”. The patient was lying face down, never knew that song connected to my heart. Edelweiss is the name of white, lovely small flowers in the Alps.

Each year program participants apply for the award recognition by demonstrating how their organization has committed to providing quality care for stroke patients. In addition to following treatment guidelines, participants also provide education to patients to help them manage their health and rehabilitation once at home. “We are pleased to recognize these LVHN hospitals for their commitment
to stroke care,” said Lee H. Schwamm, MD, national chairperson of the Quality Oversight Committee and Executive Vice Chair of Neurology, Director of Acute Stroke Services, Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston, Mass. “Research has shown that hospitals adhering to clinical measures through the Get With The Guidelines quality improvement initiative can often see fewer readmissions and lower mortality rates.”

Rabies Prevention 5 Tips To Protect Yourself + Your Dogs (Family Features) Around the world every year, an estimated 59,000 people die from rabies following a bite or scratch from an infected dog, according to the World Health Organization; almost half of them children under 15 years old. With preventive steps, including vaccination, you can protect your human and canine family members. In large areas of the world, rabies continues to be a serious health issue. Of the estimated 900 million dogs around the world, the majority (75-85%) are not household pets. In the countries where rabies is a continued threat and outbreaks continue, both owned and un-owned dogs may be at risk if they are not receiving rabies vaccinations. Many areas where rabies outbreaks continue have limited access to resources and vaccines, and awareness and education about the disease are often low. Learn more about this preventable disease and how you can stop its spread with these tips from the experts at MSD Animal Health’s Afya Program. Know What Rabies Is and How It Gets Transmitted Rabies is a viral zoonotic disease (a disease that can be passed from animals to humans) that causes fatal inflammation of the brain and spinal cord, not only in wild animals but also domestic animals and humans. The rabies virus is transmitted through the saliva of an infected animal, usually through a bite or scratch. In up to 99% of cases, domestic dogs are responsible for human rabies infections. The time it takes to show symptoms of rabies depends on the distance the virus has to travel from the bite site to the brain. If someone gets bitten on a toe, it could take weeks or even months to show symptoms, but if bitten on the face, he or she could become rabid in just a few days. Once symptoms are present, the disease is 100% fatal. Symptoms include anxiety, confusion, partial paralysis, agitation, aggression, hypersalivation, difficulty swallowing, fear of water and, eventually, paralysis, coma and death. Use Caution with Unfamiliar Dogs Generally, it’s best to avoid approaching unfamiliar dogs. This is especially true of dogs that are sleeping, eating or caring for puppies, as they may be startled or

protective if they sense a threat. If you encounter a dog you do not know, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention cautions against running and screaming, and instead suggests avoiding direct eye contact and remaining motionless. Watch for warning behaviors from the dog such as growling, snapping, showing teeth, raised hair on its back, ears back and rigid posture. Ensure Your Dogs are Vaccinated Through vaccination of dogs, rabies is 100% preventable. You can do your part by ensuring your dog stays current on its rabies vaccination, which is administered by a veterinarian in either one-year or threeyear doses. Get Prompt Medical Attention If someone has been bitten or scratched by a suspected rabid dog and may have been exposed to rabies, a vaccination can be part of the treatment. However, it’s important to immediately wash the wound for 15 minutes with soap and running water. This can help remove and inactivate any virus which may have been inoculated. The post-exposure vaccination course will depend on your prior vaccination history, so you’ll need to consult your doctor or visit the emergency room for immediate medical care. Find more information about preventing and eliminating rabies at afya.org and help raise awareness by using #ForThemForUs and sharing photos and videos of rabies prevention and elimination efforts on social media.

The Latest on COVID
1) To quote from the New York Times: ““In an urgent plea, federal health officials asked that any American who is pregnant, planning to become pregnant or currently breastfeeding get vaccinated against the coronavirus as soon as possible.” COVID-19 “poses a severe risk during pregnancy, when an individual’s immune system is tamped down, and raises the risk of stillbirth or another poor outcome, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.” As reported on CNN: “As of September 2021, more than 125,000 laboratoryconfirmed COVID-19 cases have been reported in pregnant people, including more than 22,000 hospitalized cases and 161 deaths. 2) Had COVID? Nearly 40% of you will experience at least one long-term symptom for up to six months after
infection. According to Reuters, the symptoms most commonly found “include breathing problems, fatigue, pain and anxiety”. 3) YouTube bans misinformation about vaccines. According to the Washington Post: ““YouTube will ban any videos that claim that commonly used vaccines approved by health authorities are ineffective or dangerous. “Claims that approved vaccines cause autism, cancer or infertility, or that the vaccines contain trackers, will be removed” states the New York Times. 4) Experts urge Americans to get vaccinated for both COVID-19 and the flu. To quote an AP article: “Amid all the focus on COVID-19 vaccinations, U.S. health experts have another plea: Don’t skip your flu shot.” Reopening of businesses, return to travel and less masking could result in the flu making a comeback.
