Fall In Love With A Smart Wedding Budget

FINE DINING & BANQUET FACILITIES

(NewsUSA) – The to-do list for newly engaged couples can be daunting. Finding a venue, booking a caterer, choosing a dress — there are many details that need to be factored into a wedding budget, regardless of who is paying. Starting a new life together is a perfect opportunity to establish solid financial habits that will serve you well throughout your marriage.A CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional can help couples develop a smart plan to manage engagement and wedding expenses. Setting priorities early on can help avoid conflicts as the big day approaches. Start by considering these four elements of planning for wedding expenses: Make a list. Write down everything you both need or want for your dream wedding. That includes items large and small, from the number of guests to the types of flowers or favors. Rank the list. Now that you have your list, put things in order of priority. Assign a number to each item in order of importance, such as a live band, sit-down dinner or elaborate cake. Or start by sorting needs and wants into categories, using 1 as most important, 2 as moderately important and 3 as least important. You will need to agree on the most important items, whatever those may be. Budget the list. Assign an estimated price to each category or item, according to how much you are able and willing to spend. Consider cutting back on flowers in order to fund a sit-

down dinner, for instance, or opt for a buffet-style dinner so you can invite more guests. Listen to the lists. This is the time to be a good listener. Hear what your partner has to say about needs and wants; what is important to one of you may not be as important to the other. Financial compromise is a skill that will serve you throughout married life. Data from loan services show that approximately 45% of couples racked up debt to pay for their wedding, and that ultimately the debt resulted in consideration of divorce. Nip that risk in the bud by avoiding debt when you assess your wedding expenses. A CFP® professional can help you think outside the box and guide you in making smart financial choices during the wedding planning process. Visit LetsMakeAPlan.org for more information about managing wedding expenses and planning your financial future.

Registry 101: Must-Have Items To Put On Your Wedding Wish List (BPT) - If you've got wedding bells in your future, chances are you also have a million things to do before the big day. And one to-do item that could surely use more attention is creating your wedding registry. The beauty of a well-thought-out registry is that it helps everyone: Your friends and family know they'll be helping you and your spouse start your life together with things that you really want, and you'll look forward to a well-stocked home provided by the love and thoughtfulness of the ones who matter most to you. To make sure your list includes items that you know you'll use, incorporating gifts that are a mix of different price points is ideal so that your guests have options, no matter their budget. As we tend to spend most of our time in the kitchen and the bedroom, here are the must-have items to help set up your spaces for years to come. Kitchen necessities

Establish your kitchen as the ultimate gathering place for family - and special nights for just you two - with cookware and bakeware that will help you create memorable meals for life's most special moments, and every day in between. Cast iron pan: Any cook worth their salt will tell you that a cast iron pan is the single most useful item that you can have. For example, a heavy-duty 12inch Pre-Seasoned Cast Iron Skillet from GoodCook can be used both indoors and for camping, and comes with a preseasoned coat to prevent rusting. The 12-inch diameter is perfect for everything from sauteing vegetables to pan-roasting chicken, searing steaks and more. Pizza pan: For epic pizza nights, an AirPerfect 15.75-inch Air Insulated, Nonstick Pizza Crisper will make perfect pizza every time. The AirPerfect holes reduce moisture when baking to help create the ultimate crispy crust, and the Continued on next page

perfect bake every time, distributing heat evenly for thorough baking. Bed and bath comforts Consider quality when selecting items for your bed and bath, and you'll be treated not only with a feeling of luxury, but comforts that you'll be able to enjoy a lot longer. Quality bedsheets: Upgrade to new, high-quality bedsheets by opting for a minimum thread count between 300600 for most materials, though some (like flannel and microfiber) do not use thread count. If you have the opportunity to feel different fabrics to determine what you like best, that's even better - how bedsheets feel is even more important than how they look! Bath towels: Create a spa-like bathroom with top-notch bath towels made from 100% cotton. If you like the plush feel of a heavier, more luxurious towel, opt for higher density, measured in grams per square meter (GSM). The heaviest weight towel will be 600-900 GSM, and feels much more plush than a medium weight (400-600) or light (300400) GSM towel. If you prefer to really wrap yourself up, consider adding a few bath sheets to your list, which are larger than a standard bath towel (36x60 as opposed to 27x52). Keep in mind, both heavier density towels and bath sheets may need more time in the dryer! Remember, your wedding registry is not just about receiving things you absolutely need, but it's also important to include a few items that you may not have bought for yourself. Let your friends and family pamper you a little every day.

6 Tips for Planning a Sweet Graduation Celebration (Family Features) When years of hitting the books lead to a hard-earned diploma, there’s just one thing left to do: celebrate the graduate with something sweet. A graduation is a major life milestone that deserves plenty of recognition, and a graduation party is a perfect way to celebrate the occasion with family and friends. Whether the party celebrates a recent grad or accepted student, you can make the moment all the more memorable with these planning tips and personalized party favors and customized gifts from M&M’S. Make a guest list. Deciding who you’d like to invite is a good starting place because it may influence several other choices you need to make down the road, like where you host the party and what you serve to eat and drink. Choose the place and time. Another decision you’ll need to make right away is where and when the party will be held. Having a rough idea of how many people will attend can help determine where to host the party, since you’ll want to have enough room for everyone to be comfortable. If you’re timing the celebration to coincide with a graduation ceremony, be sure to schedule your party so any guests who also plan to attend the ceremony can do both. Many families choose to hold open house-style parties for an extended period of time so people who have multiple graduation parties to attend can fit them all in. Plan your menu. The style, timing and duration of your party all influence

what kind of food you serve. If your party overlaps a traditional mealtime, you may want to serve a full meal. However, if you’re hosting an open house format, keeping food fresh for an extended period can be a challenge. If you take care to keep chilled foods cold and heated foods warm, a buffet can allow guests to serve themselves as they wish. You may also find appetizers are easier to heat and replenish throughout the party. Don’t forget about dessert: A celebratory cake or tray of cupcakes are traditional ideas you can complement with other selections, such as candy bars to add colorful fun and variety to the party. Accommodate gifts. While common etiquette suggests a host should never expect them, most people do bring gifts to celebrate the graduate. You can set up an attractive gift table with a gift of your own to discretely show guests where to place gifts when they arrive, such as an M&M’S Occasion Bottle, which can be personalized to toast your grad with up to three colors, text, clip art and photos. The bottle stands nearly a foot tall, so it makes for an eyecatching centerpiece at the gift table. Select entertainment. Often, there’s enough hustle and bustle at graduation parties that you don’t need to go overboard planning activities or entertainment. You might have some music playing at a moderate level so guests can still have casual conversations without yelling, and you may want to display a slideshow celebrating the graduate’s

accomplishments along the way to this big day. Other fun ideas include photobooths with props, a signature frame for guests to sign and notecards for guests to offer their congratulations, advice or predictions for the graduate’s future. Organize party favors. One way to thank guests for honoring your graduate and inspire more moments of fun is by offering a favor that doubles as a memento of the event. For example, M&M’S Class of 2022 Graduation Favor Tins make for a perfect way to send guests home with a sweet reminder of the celebration. Each stylish tin can be customized with a lid design and message for guests and be filled with a delicious serving of personalized candies that match the party’s theme. Special Gifts To Make Dad Smile (Family Features) Father’s Day brings a special opportunity each year to celebrate the dad in your life, whether it’s spent lighting a grill in the backyard, heading to the golf course or simply relaxing at home. Make his day one to remember by enjoying his favorite activities and giving a gift that’ll put a grin on his face. From home chefs and snazzy dressers to outdoorsmen and sports fans, these gifts offer an array of ideas for dads of all kinds, so you can bring a little extra joy to this year’s celebration. Find more Father’s Day gift inspirationat eLivingtoday.com. Special Steaks for a Special Dad Even for the man who has it all, sometimes Father’s Day gifting can be pretty simple. Show Dad some love with the Omaha Steaks Best Father’s Day Gift package that includes

mouthwatering favorites like BaconWrapped Filet Mignons, Boneless Pork Chops, Boneless Chicken Breasts, Gourmet Jumbo Franks, PureGround Filet Mignon Burgers, Individual Scalloped Potatoes, decadent Caramel Apple Tartlets and a jar of Omaha Steaks Seasoning. Find more gifting wisdom at OmahaSteaks.com/Dad. Wilderness Must-Haves Determining the type of gear dad needs depends whether he’s camping high in the mountains or just down the road, but if he’s an outdoor enthusiast who enjoys spending nights with nature, there’s no limit to the options that can make his nights in the wilderness just a little more comfortable. From tents and backpacks to lanterns, camp stoves and fireside foldout chairs, the man who seems ready for anything might just need one last piece of equipment. Golf Bag Goodies

If he’s like most golfers, chances are your dad spends a few minutes each round searching for his ball after a wayward tee shot. Save him some precious time on the course with the extra golf balls he needs so he doesn’t have to worry about leaving one (or two or three) in the woods. Even amateur players sometimes prefer a certain ball, so don’t be afraid to sneak to the garage and check his current supply so you can put his favorite brand in your cart. grill can take your dad’s barbecue reputation from backyard novice to neighborhood celebrity. He may already view himself as master of the meats, but a new charcoal or propane grill can give him the motivation he needs to try new recipes and cook up classics. It’s a gift he can enjoy while bringing the entire family together to celebrate savory success. Perfect for His Pocket Just before heading out the door, there’s one last “checklist” for many dads: phone, wallet, keys, pocketknife. The next time he goes through the classic pocket check, give your dad an upgrade he can smile about with a knife he can use for a variety of situations on a daily basis. For a reminder of home every time he opens the blade, consider a customized option engraved with a loving message so he’ll never forget your thoughtful gift. A Wardrobe Upgrade Whether your dad has style or just thinks he does, you can give his wardrobe the finishing touch it needs with a watch to match the look that’s all his own. From casual styles that complement most of his clothes to traditional timepieces suited for special occasions, there are options in virtually every price range to help the final piece of his outfit make a statement. In the office, on the road or right at home, he’ll be reminded of you every time he checks his wrist.

The Man Who Inspired Father's Day — Single Dad & Civil War Vet William Jackson Smart was a twicemarried and twice-widowed Civil War veteran who was also the father of 14 children, one of whom dedicated her life to the creation of Father’s Day in honor of her devoted and selfless dad. William’s daughter, Sonora Smart Dodd, was attending one of the first official Mother’s Day services in 1909 at her church in Spokane, Washington, when she had an epiphany—if mothers deserved a day in honor of their loving service, why not fathers? When Sonora was only 16, her mother Ellen died, leaving William as a single father to Sonora and her five younger brothers. And by Sonora’s account, he performed brilliantly. “I remember everything about him,” Sonora said many years later to the Spokane Daily Chronicle. “He was both father and mother to me and my brothers and sisters.” Sonora’s mother Ellen, herself a widow, had three children from a previous marriage. William had also been married and widowed before he met Sonora’s mother. William had five children with his first wife, Elizabeth, who were already grown when he became a widower for the second

time. In 1910, Sonora brought a petition before the Spokane Ministerial Alliance to recognize the courage and devotion of all fathers like William on June 5, her dad’s birthday. The local clergy liked the idea of a special Father’s Day service, but couldn’t pull something together that quickly, so they settled for June 19, the third Sunday in June. On that first Father’s Day in 1910, church sermons across Spokane were dedicated to dear old dad, red and white roses were passed out in honor of living and deceased fathers, the mayor of Spokane and governor of Washington issued proclamations, and Sonora found her calling. She spent much of the next 60 years pushing for the official recognition of Father’s Day as a national holiday. William was born in Arkansas in 1842 and records show that he enlisted as a Union soldier there in 1863. That was odd, because Arkansas was a Confederate state. Spokane resident, Jerry Numbers, who owned what had been Sonora’s home, researched the Smart family history for Spokane’s Father’s Day Centennial Celebration in 2010. Numbers says that William, in

Panorama Community Magazine fact, fought for both sides in the Civil War. Driving a supply wagon for Confederate troops, William was captured in the Battle of Pea Ridge, a decisive Union victory in Arkansas in 1862. Rather than be stuck in a prisoner of war camp, he opted to join the northern cause. As indication that William was a “Reb” before he was a “Yank,” Sonora was a member of both the United Daughters of the Confederacy and the Daughters of Union Veterans. When Sonora was born in 1882, William and his second wife Ellen were living on a “coal ranch” in Jenny Lind, Arkansas. Instead of mining for coal, William and the family “farmed” it, collecting chunks of coal from the surface and carting it to town for sale. They then sold the property in 1887 for $5,000—a handsome sum at the time—and the family traveled by train to a new homestead outside of Spokane. (The farm in Arkansas would turn out to be one of the most productive coal fields in the entire nation.) It was on the Smart’s family farm near Creston, Washington, where William’s second wife died and he became a widower again at the age of 56. His youngest son was seven or eight and Sonora, his oldest child still living at home, was 16. In Sonora’s memories of this difficult time, she recalls her father as a “great home person,” a man who exemplified fatherly love and protection. That first Father’s Day celebration in Spokane might have remained a local tradition if not for the perseverance of Sonora Smart Dodd. Following the 1910 Father’s Day observance, William Jennings Bryan, one of the most famous politicians of the time, sent Sonora a congratulatory letter, which sparked a rush of national media attention on Sonora and Spokane. Sonora won the support of her congressmen, who began to lobby for the creation of a national holiday. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson celebrated Father’s Day in Spokane during a visit to Washington. We don’t

know if William Jackson Smart was there to shake the president’s hand, but it would have been one of his last Father’s Days. William died in 1919. Much more than a Father’s Day booster, Sonora Smart Dodd was an accomplished artist, poet, children’s book author, funeral home director, and founding member of just about every civic organization in Spokane. But she never let go of her determination to give fathers like hers the recognition they deserved. It wasn’t until 1972, six years before Sonora’s death at the age of 96, that President Richard Nixon finally signed a Congressional resolution declaring the third Sunday in June to be Father’s Day. Happy Father's Day!

Stream With Dad On Father's Day There's no better time to salute some of our favorite Netflix dads than this Father's Day. If one of your preferred Father's Day activities is binge-watching and you're looking for the best shows on Netflix to screen with your dad in honor of the holiday, you'll want to check these dad-friendly shows out. 1. Stranger Things - On this Netflix show, Chief Hopper is not only tasked with keeping the town of Hawkins, Ind. safe, but he also steps into a father role when he fosters the troubled and misunderstood Eleven. (If you can be patient, the new season drops on Memorial Day weekend—and makes a perfect Father's Day binge-watch with your dad.) 2. Cobra Kai - For Karate Kid-loving dads, this show features former rivals Daniel and Johnny from the original movie as fathers and mentors to a new generation of kids. 3. The Upshaws - This Netflix sitcom stars Mike Epps as a working-class family patriarch muddling through with his wife and kids—and a child from a previous relationship. 4. Fuller House - Your favorite '90s dad (the late Bob Saget) is back and cleaner than ever with the full Tanner Crew. This time around, the adventures center on DJ raising her three boys with the help of her sister, Stephanie, old pal (and bane of Danny's existence) Kimmy, and, of course, her dad, Danny. 5. Lost in Space - Being a father

is hard work, no doubt about it–but being a father to a family stranded on a hostile, foreign planet with an alien robot in pursuit is a whole different story. It definitely makes for some riveting TV family drama, though! 6. The Crown -The Crown portrays the U.K.'s Prince Philip as a young father and husband navigating the life of a royal, dealing with some unexpected changes in his wife's responsibilities, and marital tensions that arise as a result of their unique situation. 7. Arrested Development - To the delight of countless fans, Netflix brought the unhinged Bluth family back for their fifth season. As always, Michael Bluth champions the leading role, supporting his children, parents, siblings, and community as he struggles to keep the family together in the midst of legal and moral obstacles. 8. Anne with an E - Though Matthew Cuthbert is a shy and sensitive man at heart, his spirit and zest for life are ignited by his love for his adopted daughter, Anne, and her undying passion for life in this wonderful Netflix series. 9. Master of None - To capture the complex relationship between a son and his immigrant father, comedian, actor, and writer Aziz Ansari cast the only man for the role: his real-life father, Shoukath Ansari. The result is both heartwarming and funny, showcasing their father-son dynamic as they discuss dating in the age of social media.

Take A Trip To The Old Jail The Historic Old Jail Museum is a beautiful two-story structure located in Jim Thorpe. Built in 1871, the facility was the Carbon County Prison until 1995. It was purchased by Tom and Betty Lou McBride and opened for tours. Today, it is managed by their oldest grandson, Blaine. Visitors to the jail not only have a guided tour of the building but learn important history of the Irish immigrating to America, the dangerous work of a coal miner, and the miner's connection to the Civil War. Visitors are amazed at the mysterious "handprint on the wall". The "Molly Maguires" were Irish coal miners striving for better pay and working conditions in the mines. Several were accused of murder, convicted through unfair trials, and hanged. Seven inside the jail, twenty total throughout Pennsylvania. Before one man was hanged, he placed his handprint on the wall as a sign of his innocence. It has been dug out, re-plastered & re-painted but keeps coming back. Visit our website www. theoldjailmuseum.com for our tour schedule. For more information, you may contact us at 570-325-5259. Do not visit Jim Thorpe without going to Jail!

15th Annual Coal Miner's Heritage Festival Sunday, July 10th “A celebration of coal region heritage and culture.” The 15th Annual Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival is set for Sunday, July 10, 2022, from 10am to 5pm on the grounds of the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford, PA. This unique, educational, and fun event celebrates Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Anthracite coal region history, culture, crafts, food, and music. The event is presented by the Panther Creek Valley Foundation, the parent nonprofit organization of the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum. Admission to the festival grounds, museum, and parking are free. Underground tours of the No. 9 Coal Mine will be available throughout the day for a nominal charge. Originally opened by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in 1855 and operated until June of 1972, the No. 9 Mine is the world’s oldest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine. Guided mine tours are approximately one hour in length including the train ride into and out of the mine. The “Wash Shanty” Museum on the grounds houses one of the region’s largest collections of Anthracite coal mining artifacts, tools, photographs, and memorabilia. Many unique attractions and exhibits are offered as part of this year’s Heritage Festival. In keeping with tradition, the Coal

Miner’s Shoveling Competition is always a favorite event. Anyone over the age of 16 is invited to participate in this competition where the goal is to shovel a half-ton of coal in the shortest time. In past years this event has been very competitive drawing participants from throughout the coal region. This event begins at 2 PM with trophies being awarded to the winners. Interesting and fun exhibits will highlight coal region heritage and culture such as an old time “Wash Day” exhibit, antique vehicles, coal advertising signs, coal region beer trays, a display of oldfashioned moonshine making equipment, and mine safety and rescue displays. A variety of great coal region music will be featured throughout the Heritage Festival. Entertainment will be provided by WMGH Polka Program, live with “Polka Joe” Manjack, DJ Shawn Frederickson with classic coal region music, folk music by Jay Smar, and Dave Matsinko as they stroll the grounds. Throughout the day reenactors will walk the grounds in authentic “patch town” outfits performing skits and telling stories of the mines. A wide variety of vendors, ethnic foods, and festival favorites will also be available. The Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival is put on every year by the Panther Creek

Leave Young Where’s My Refund from the IRS? By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc. Wildlife Alone Whether in their backyards or high on a mountain, it’s almost certain Pennsylvanians will encounter young wildlife this time of year. While some young animals might appear to be abandoned, usually they are not. It’s likely their mothers are watching over them from somewhere nearby. So when encountering young wildlife, be it deer, birds, raccoons or other animals, the best thing you can do is leave it alone. “Well-intentioned people might step in to help a young animal that appears to be alone, not realizing its mother is nearby and it’s not in need of help,” said Matthew Schnupp, the Game Commission’s wildlife management director. “That’s one reason why leaving young wildlife undisturbed in the wild typically is the best solution when encountering young wild animals.” Adult animals often leave their young while they forage for food, but they don’t go far and they do return. Wildlife also often relies on a natural defensive tactic called the “hider strategy,” where young animals will remain motionless and “hide” in surrounding cover while adults draw the attention of potential predators or other intruders away from their young. Deer employ this strategy, and deer fawns sometimes are assumed to be abandoned when, in fact, their mothers Continued on page 27

Normally the IRS begins a tax season 1 million returns behind; for 2022 the IRS began the tax season 8.5 million returns behind. On May 2, 2022 the IRS reported that they are still 6.6 million returns behind on 2020 returns! Additionally, from the 2020 season the IRS staff has 5 million returns they are working on that have “specific issues” to resolve. And, in 2022 the Service received 9 million paper filed returns, many of which were due to identity theft (which takes much extra work to verify & process), to process. Errors caused by incorrect recovery rebates, child tax credit and math errors have led to 8.3 million notices mailed out as of 4/7/22 for 2021 returns that the Service is trying to process refunds for. Added to all of the above of course are the people who have signed up for the Volunteer Identity Theft ID Pin Program whose registration needs to be processed and you can now can understand why you may not yet have received an expected response or refund from the IRS for 2020 and/or 2021.

Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori 21st Century Yard Sales By Dr. Lori Verderame Most people think of yard sales as simple. Move stuff from inside your house to the front lawn, tack up a few home-made signs around the neighborhood and wait for the crowds to arrive, buy, and take it all away. The thought is. in the course of a few hours, your house will be clean, your lawn will be cleared, and your pockets will be lined with cash. Or so you hoped. Reality, I hate to tell you, looks quite different. In order to have a lucrative and stress-free yard sale these days, you have to know about technology, understand social media, connect with potential buyers worldwide, and use it all to your advantage. Preparation is key. Don’t expect those who never help you with chores to pitch in now. Don’t hope for helpers. Hire helpers. That’s right. Hire the brains and the brawn that you need for such an undertaking. You’ll need muscle to move the unwanted stuff and you’ll need mind power to work the smart phones and other devices for advertising, inventory control, social media, and sales. Yard sales are big business today. They help fund the creator culture with many videographers coming to yard sales just to get content for their YouTube channels. Some are buyers and some are not. Yard sales are part of the soon to be nearly 75 billion dollar, projected by 2025, thrifting and reselling industry too. So be ready. Decide who you want to host and who you don’t want on your lawn at your yard sale. Some yard sale hosts are requesting that their kids are not on video, others are asking for video

credit to help promote future yard sales, etc. And, don’t forget to check your insurance policy just in case an accident happens on your property. When it comes to your stuff, consider what is a family heirloom, cherished and sentimental keepsake, or good old fashioned –who knows how, where, or when I got this thing—kind of stuff that is doing nothing more than cluttering up the house. Get ready to make piles. And these piles have to go somewhere eventually, so get tubs or boxes with handles, and start sorting your stuff. Sort room by room or cabinet by cabinet or drawer by drawer. Sorting doesn’t have to be perfect because people like the treasure hunt too. I am not a firm believer in the “if it brings you joy” concept when it comes to de-cluttering and organizing stuff. I live on the “if it brings you money” side of the de-cluttering street. If you can resell it, trade it or otherwise capitalize on the Continued on page 27

JUNE IS FLEA & TICK SEASON

Guard Your Pets Against Contagious Diseases And Parasites by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital It was Ben Franklin who said “An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.” This is rarely more true then when dealing with parasites and parasitic diseases in our pets. As the weather warms, the biting insects return. This represents a dangerous problem for all dogs. A single mosquito bite can cause Heartworm infection in any dog. Heartworm is almost always fatal without treatment and the treatment is very expensive. Luckily, Heartworm Disease is easily prevented. All dogs should be heartworm tested and started on a once per month heartworm preventive pill. These pills are very safe for most dogs, and will also help prevent intestinal parasites as well. Cats share some of these risks as well. Even indoor cats can get intestinal parasites because some are spread by fleas, or can be brought into the house by other animals, insects, or even on the bottom of your shoes. For these reasons, we encourage all responsible pet owner to have a stool sample checked at least once per year. All dogs should also be checked for heartworm and kept on heartworm preventative year round. Remember, not only is an ounce of prevention worth a pound of cure, it can also save your pet' life!

Panorama Community Magazine Yard Sales - continued from page 24 object that you are willing to sell, then part with it. That doesn’t mean I don’t like to collect…because I do. I show you how to cash in with my reselling tips. So, as you prepare for your yard sale consider the internet as a tool for making your yard sale a success. There are many websites that announce yard sales and since the yard sale is all about locale and physically moving items out of your home to others who buy them, make sure you know where to advertise your sale. Facebook marketplace ads which announce yard sales with local pick up is a good option as are a whole host of other websites that are geared to yard sale advertising. Advertise and list the unwanted items on eBay.com and mark the listings with local pick up. Services such as Kaiyo and others are interested in furniture that can be sold in a yard sale type manner. Ph.D. antiques appraiser, author, and award-winning TV personality, Dr. Lori appears on The Curse of Oak Island on History channel. She gives appraisal value information at www.DrLoriV.com, www. Youtube.com/DrLoriV or call (888) 431-1010.

Wildlife - continued from page 23 are nearby. The Game Commission urges Pennsylvanians to resist the urge to interfere with young wildlife or remove any wild animal from its natural setting. Such contact can be harmful to both people and wildlife. Wild animals can lose their natural fear of humans, making it difficult, even impossible, for them to ever again live normally in the wild. And anytime wildlife is handled, there’s always a risk people could contract diseases or parasites such as fleas, ticks and lice. Wildlife that becomes habituated to humans also can pose a public-safety risk. Some years ago, a yearling, six-point buck attacked and severely injured two people. The investigation into the incident revealed that a neighboring family had illegally taken the deer into their home and fed it as a fawn, and they continued to feed the deer right up until the time of the attack. It is illegal to take or possess wildlife from the wild. Under state law, the penalty for such a violation is a fine of up to $1,500 per animal. Under no circumstances will anyone who illegally takes wildlife into

captivity be allowed to keep that animal, and under a working agreement with state health officials, any “high risk” rabies vector species confiscated after human contact must be euthanized and tested; it cannot be returned to the wild because the risk of spreading disease is too high. Animals infected with rabies might not show obvious symptoms, but still might be able to transmit the disease. Though any mammal might carry rabies, the rabies vector species identified in the agreement are: skunks, raccoons, foxes, bats, coyotes and groundhogs. People can get rabies from the saliva of a rabid animal if they are bitten or scratched, or if the saliva gets into the person’s eyes, mouth or a fresh wound. Only wildlife rehabilitators, who are licensed by the Game Commission, are permitted to care for injured or orphaned wildlife for the purposes of eventual release back into the wild. For those who find wildlife that truly is in need of assistance, a listing of licensed wildlife rehabilitators can be found on the Pennsylvania Association of Wildlife Rehabilitators website, www. pawr.com.

Joanne McComb

by Rich Lipinski

Last month, we celebrated the local ladies of the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). This month we celebrate a Western Pennsylvania native, Joanne McComb. After her AAGPBL stint, she moved to our area and helped hundreds of young athletes at Bloomsburg University. McComb was born in 1933 in Avonmore Pennsylvania, a small town about 30 miles from Pittsburgh. McComb learned to play baseball from her father and remembers being a young girl and playing ball on the street with the boys. Every single day, they played baseball in the middle of their street. People from all over town came to watch it. She explained that, “a neighbor came up to my

mother and said, ‘Why does your daughter act like that? Why can’t she be more ladylike?’ My mother never said a word.” McComb first heard about the AAGPBL and the tryouts from an article she read in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette. She was rejected at first, being only 15 years old, and they said they would be in contact the next year. The winter of the following year she received a telegram informing her of the tryouts. There were multiple tryouts, the group went from about 100 to 60 to her being called into the mangers office and being handed a first basemen’s mitt to play first base for the Springfield Sallies in 1950. The right-hander was nicknamed Jo by her teammates. The Springfield Sallies were a

women’s professional baseball team who joined the All-American Girls Professional Baseball League in the 1948 season. The team represented Springfield, Illinois, and played their games at Fitzgerald Memorial Stadium. The team was managed by Leonard Zintak and she played with Pennsylvania natives Shirley Burkovich, Ann Cindric, Betty Jane Cornett, and Lenora Mandella. In 1950 as touring team they had the opportunity to play at Yankee Stadium. During the game some of the Yankees players served as bat boys.

Bloomsburg University McComb served Bloomsburg in numerous capacities for 26 years before retiring in 1986. She was one of the pioneers in the formation of women's varsity athletics at the school and was named the school's first women's basketball coach in 1970 – guiding the program for six years. She went 52-15 in her six seasons and is ranked fifth on the school's all-time career wins list and second on the school's all-time list in winning percentage (.776). She also served as the associate director of athletics for nine years. Bloomsburg named the Female Underclass Athlete of the Year Award in her honor which has been presented since 1977. In 2019, she was elected to the Bloomsburg University Hall of Fame AAGPBL Representative In retirement she has gone to attend many events and reunions promoting and reminding everyone of the AAGBL’s special place in both baseball and American

history. She has attended many of these events with friend and AAGPBL alumni Sarah “Salty” Sands of Orangeville. In 1992 she was seen in the movie A League Of Their Own, playing herself in the Cooperstown scenes at the end of the film. Joanne is now 89 years old and still lives in Bloomsburg. It’s Time To Pick The Strawberries at Pumpkin Hill Weather Has Been Great, Early Picking Expected “New fields and good weather promise a bumper crop of Strawberries.” “The biggest berries in years..” Says Harry Roinick, of Pumpkin Hill Farms in Nescopeck. “We have increased our acreage for the 9th straight season.” “This has been a good season for growing strawberries,” said Roinick. “There has been no frost damage and berries look great.” “With a little sunshine, the berries will be bursting by early

June. In 2012, we introduced Strawberry Plasticulture production system to Northeast Pennsylvania. The berries have been much larger and easier to pick with the system,” said Roinck. “The planting is a little more difficult and but the plant could produce as many as 40 berries per plant." The rolling hills just south of Nescopeck, have been long noted for producing flavorful fruit and vegetables. The hills will be alive with pick you own (P.Y.O) activity this summer. In late June Blueberries will be ready at Stemmrich Farms. As the summer rolls along head back to Pumpkin

Advantages Of A Ductless Cooling & Heating System By the HVAC Experts at S.J. Kowalski Most people have heard of ductless cooling and heating systems. And they have probably seen the small, indoor units installed high on walls in homes, restaurants or office buildings. But what do you really know about these systems? They offer a highly flexible option to traditional heat pumps and central air conditioning systems which force cooled and heated air through ducts while ductless systems deliver air directly into specific zones. Sometimes referred to as mini-split systems, multisplit systems, or split-ductless systems, they are comprised of a small outdoor unit and one or more indoor units that require nothing more than mounting capabilities and access to electricity. Ductless cooling and heating offer home and business owners a cost-effective way to replace inefficient window units, space heaters and electric baseboard

heaters. They can be installed in home additions, new construction, condominiums and apartments, or to improve temperature control in specific rooms. Ductless systems can even be an option for buildings that currently use ducted forcedair systems. They save you money. One of the biggest reasons why homeowners switch to ductless cooling and heating is overall cost savings. In recent years, utility costs skyrocketed. When a home’s temperature depends on an inefficient system, monthly bills can quickly climb out of control. Ductless systems use less power, are smaller than traditional forced-air systems, and because the temperature-controlledair is delivered directly into a room, there is no loss in efficiency. Multi-split systems also allow homeowners to create zones in their home, which means they no longer must cool or heat rooms that aren’t occupied. In addition to saving money on utilities, homeowners may also be eligible for utility and manufacture rebates. Often the quality of indoor air can be lower than the quality of outdoor air. With traditional HVAC systems, air ducts must be professionally cleaned on a regular basis, and even after cleaning, dust and allergens can be left behind. Ductless systems offer multi-stage filtration that can drastically reduce dust, bacteria, pollen, allergens

and other particulates in the air. They are quick and easy to install. Installing a traditional ducted system in some cases can take a week or more and disrupts daily activities in the home. Ductless systems are far less invasive to install and depending upon the number of indoor and outdoor units required, can be up and running in as little as one day. Mini-split systems simply require a small three-inch hole to connect the indoor and outdoor unit. That’s it! This means homeowners don’t have to worry about rebuilding walls or ceilings around ductwork and there is no loss of precious square footage. Ductless cooling and heating systems are energy efficient, environmentally friendly and completely customizable. They offer homeowners the ability to cool and heat specific zones of their home to the exact temperature they desire, providing consistent and exceptional year-round comfort. Call S.J. Surfaces 101: How to Pick the Right Kitchen Countertop for Your Lifestyle (BPT) - Are you among the estimated 20 million Americans planning to take on a kitchen remodel this year? Countertops occupy a lot of visual real estate and are a major focal point of any kitchen. Choosing the right material that complements your décor style and lifestyle is one of the most important aspects of a successful kitchen design. Selecting the right countertop can be tricky. The possibilities are virtually limitless between natural and engineered materials considering all the design and color options for each. It's important to balance design, function and budget when choosing the countertop that's right for your project. 1. High Pressure Laminate - Today's laminate countertops are a far cry from what you might envision from the '80s and '90s. Thanks to advancements in technology and engineering, you no longer must sacrifice style for affordability or performance. Believing These Home Fire Myths Puts Your Family At Risk (BPT) - Does being new make a home safe from fire? Absolutely not. In fact, all unprotected home fires burn hotter than ever today and become deadly in just two minutes or less. Buying into this common myth puts you and your family at great risk. Homes burn fast for many reasons, from open design to building materials to their contents. On top of that, much of today's home furnishings are made from synthetic, polyurethane-based materials, which cause fires to spread more quickly and produce toxic smoke. You can see for yourself how quickly a home fire becomes deadly by watching a new virtual reality video developed by the nonprofit Home Fire Sprinkler Coalition (HFSC). Shot live during actual home fires, the new videos provide user-controlled, 360-degree room views of fires without and with an installed fire sprinkler. You'll be able to look all around you to experience the fires and the sprinkler activation in real time, as if you were inside. The free videos are available at HomeFireSprinkler.org/VR. In the video without a sprinkler, the flames and smoke spread fast, reaching flashover at about 2 minutes. Flashover is when every combustible surface catches on fire, consuming the space. No one is able to survive flashover. Thanks to virtual reality, the video of the flashover provides powerful, first-person perspective on how little time people actually have to escape a home fire. The video with an installed sprinkler tells a very different story. Although the smoke

alarm signals at about the same time as the unsprinklered room, (26 seconds into the fire), the heat from the fire activates the sprinkler at the 37-second mark, dramatically changing the outcome. This fast action prevents the growth of the flames and spread of the smoke, stopping the fire from becoming deadly. A third video provides a comparison of damage in the two fires, illustrating another benefit of installed fire sprinklers: property protection. There are many myths and misconceptions about home fire sprinklers. Here are the most common misbeliefs and the facts from the experts at HFSC. Myth: Smoke activates a home fire sprinkler Fact: Home fire sprinklers are not designed to detect smoke. Home fire

sprinklers activate when high heat from the fire is detected. They cannot be activated by smoke alarms, nor from smoke when you burn something cooking. Myth: Every sprinkler turns on when there's a fire Fact: If a fire occurs, the sprinkler closest to it activates automatically, in response to the high heat from a fire. That controls and often extinguishes the flames, reduces the spread of toxic and damaging smoke, and provides time for residents to escape. When sprinklers are present, fire is kept to the room of origin 96% of the time, according to the National Fire Protection Association. Myth: Fire sprinklers cause extensive damage Fact: Fire sprinklers automatically flow water to control or extinguish a fire. The damage from an activating sprinkler will be far less than damage from flames, smoke and fire suppression in a home without fire sprinklers. When firefighters respond, the typical fire hose produces roughly 250 gallons of water per minute, under high pressure. A home fire sprinkler flows at 15 gallons per minute. Myth: Fire sprinklers just protect home residents Fact: Installing home fire sprinklers protects residents, property and the firefighters who respond to fires in these structures. According to the NFPA, the 2021 civilian fire death rate was 89% lower in structures with installed fire sprinklers. The rate of firefighter injuries was 60% lower in fires with sprinklers than in fires without sprinklers. If you're planning to build or buy a new home, ask for home fire sprinklers.

Top 7 Summer Maintenance Tips You Can Do Yourself By Thomas R. Buff

I do not have to tell you that the warm weather is finally here and the summer driving season has begun. Car care doesn’t take a vacation between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but this is the time we normally do. The warmer months can actually present some unique challenges to the maintenance needs of our vehicles, especially with the rising cost of gasoline. So as summer season begins so does the time for vacations, ice cream trips and long rides. However, hot weather can take its toll on our vehicles. Never the less, it is no secret that many automobiles are sadly neglected these days. Repairs are inevitable and become necessary sooner and more frequently when maintenance is neglected. The Car Care Council estimates that more than $62 billion in vehicle maintenance and repair that should be performed every year is neglected, evidence that there is considerably more that consumers should be doing to protect their automotive investment. By being proactive and performing a few basic maintenance checks on your own vehicle can keep your auto running throughout the warm summer months. So here are the top 7 maintenance checks you can do on your own. Fluid Levels – Check the oil, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluids. If a fluid is low look for leaks, low fluid levels are often the cause of major problems due to the fact that they are

often overlooked. A low coolant level can cause overheating and engine failure. Remember, never remove or open the radiator cap on a hot engine, wait until the engine has cooled down. Low brake fluid can cause brake failure and a low oil level can cause severe damage to the engine of your car as well. Scheduling an oil change at the beginning of the summer season is a good idea. Remember, oil is not only a lubricant but also acts to cool the vital engine parts. Tire Inflation Pressure- All tires should be inflated according to the manufactures recommended pressure. Most accidents involving tire blowouts are due to improper air pressure. To find out where the right pressure is you can look for the decal on the inside of the driver’s side door or also in your owners’ manual. Remember, a properly inflated tire will also save you gas! Battery – Believe it or not, batteries normally fail in the summer months due to the hot weather. Check the age of the battery and if it is older than 5 years it is probably a good time to replace it. Also clean all the corrosion off of the battery terminals. Belts And Hoses – Weather can wreak havoc on your belts and hoses. Check the condition of your coolant

hoses by squeezing them to feel for soft spots which indicate a worn-out hose. By twisting the belt or belts you may see any signs of cracks, distortions, worn spots or failure. Summer is not the time to be stranded on the highway because of a busted radiator hose or a torn belt. Brakes – The braking system is obviously an important part of maintenance but is one of the most neglected. Most motorists can handle the task of checking brake lining and brake fluid with common hand tools. Otherwise, have the brakes system checked at a qualified repair shop. This is especially true if you are planning on traveling this summer. Windshield wiper blades – Powerful summer storms can dump a lot of

The extreme temperature changes from the winter season wreak havoc on the wiper blades by causing cracks and tears that can lower the effectiveness of the wipers. If your wipers are leaving visible streaks or take several passes to clear away light rain, they need to be replaced. Air Conditioning - If you plan on spending some travelling time in your vehicles then now is the time to check you’re A/C system. You most likely have not needed to use it in many months. Small leaks can develop over the winter months. Have a qualified technician repair you’re A/C if it is not blowing cold air. Remember that it is important to maintain your automobile. The items mentioned are just a small part of what should be a thorough maintenance schedule for your automobile. Keeping your car safe, reliable and fuel efficient through proper maintenance will ensure an enjoyable summer driving season. Stay healthy and safe! Happy Motoring!

Car Camping Tips To Turn You From Novice To Pro (BPT) - Summer is here, and many first-time campers are preparing for an outdoor adventure. For newbies who want to get into nature this season, the easiest and most comfortable way to do that is car camping - no carrying your gear or compromising on what to bring. If you're planning your first car camping trip, here are some essential preparation tips. 1) Pack gear that's smart and convenient - There are three core packing pillars: portable, compact and lightweight. It's easy to overpack because of the added space you get by using your car. However, it's important to prioritize gear that will work smarter for you. For instance, gadgets like the award-winning Bernzomatic Digital Fuel Gauge make your camping experience more convenient. For your propane-powered essentials portable grill/stove, lantern, torch, heater or even coffee maker, the pocket-sized Digital Fuel Gauge will save you space, weight and headaches by showing how much fuel is left in your handheld cylinder. No extra run to the store because you're guessing how much fuel is left. This Fuel Gauge is compatible with any non-refillable fuel cylinder with CGA600 connection, including Bernzomatic's 1 lb. or 14 oz. propane tank. Just as you wouldn't go on a trip without knowing how much gas is in the car, don't leave home without a fuel gauge that shows if you're running low on propane!

2) Location, location, location You may choose a paid campground because of its easy access to water, public restrooms and even showers, but you will likely need to share the area with other campers. For a walk on the wild(er) side, consider unsupported camping on public lands, called dispersed camping, with no amenities. Wherever you want to go, do your research first. Contact the campground, state park, U.S. Forest Service (USFS) or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to learn about your desired destination - their rules for reservation requirements, sanitation and waste regulations or campfire permits, and even if they have drinkable water and fountains. Once you've confirmed your campsite location, commercial photographer, director and outdoor expert Forrest Mankins says to "Let someone know the details of your trip in advance to stay as trackable as possible, since you'll be far from cell signal in the woods." Mankins adds, "Download an offline copy of the GPS map area you're visiting to stay oriented and more informed before leaving service. This comes in handy if you need a backup location. The downloaded map can give you enough information on where to find a free spot if a group occupies that spot you were after." 3) Cook smart - Once you're settled at the campsite, fueling your adventure with good meals is key. "Prioritize simple and fresh ingredients, easy prep and ease of cleanup. Making dishes like grilled asparagus and chicken breast with sundried tomatoes on a portable propane-powered stove is simple, fast and leaves almost no cleanup at all," says Mankins. Whether you're lighting a campfire or charcoal stove with a blow torch attached to a fuel cylinder, or cooking with a propane grill, it's important to know how much fuel you have for all your campsite cooking. Keep the Digital Fuel Gauge handy to avoid having to go on a propane run mid-lunch. Some prep time will make the trip smooth and enjoyable, even if it's just a few miles away from home. To complete your car camping checklist, shop the Bernzomatic Digital Fuel Gauge at bernzomatic.com.

5 Road Ready Tips to Ride Motorcycles Safely & Comfortably (Family Features) A warm day on the open road is a dream opportunity for riders, whether it’s a longer trip or a quick jaunt through town. Regardless of the adventure, and no matter what you ride, a thrilling ride is a safe ride. Whether you’re new to the open road or a seasoned veteran, remember to follow best practices for safe riding like those outlined in the Responsible Rider program from BRP, makers of Can-Am 3-wheel vehicles. The program prioritizes being an attentive rider and always considering safety, the environment and riding etiquette from highways to city streets and everywhere inbetween. As a rider, you are part of a global community and a steward of the open road. To keep your ride safe and comfortable, consider these additional tips: Wear the Right Gear - While your fashion statement is largely a matter of personal preference, there are some safety items designed to protect your health and wellbeing that should be worn. Protective riding gear helps keep you safe while enjoying the open road. Full-hand gloves, riding boots that cover ankles, pants and jackets help protect against wind, sun, cold, heat and flying objects such as bugs or rocks. Drivers and passengers should also wear an approved helmet and eye protection to prevent injuries to the head, brain and eyes. Choose a Proper Helmet - Every rider should wear a helmet, and the abundance of options available can make it tough to decide what’s best. Start by looking for a DOT Certification sticker, which means the helmet meets the strict safety standards of the Department of Transportation. • Full Face: This style of helmet provides protection for the head and neck with a fixed chin that helps absorb impact. Simply slip it on and adjust the visor. • Open Face: Helmets like the Can-Am N21 are usually worn with goggles or a small integrated shield. This option provides ultimate freedom on the road. • Crossover: These helmets are easy to personalize based on ride intensity and weather conditions. Crossover helmets can be configured in numerous ways by transforming from full face to jet, which keep it breezy with a full field of view. Maintain Your Hairdo - Keep hair out of your face. If you have longer hair, choose

JUNE 2022

a hairstyle that’s high and away from your eyes like a low bun, simple braid or ponytail. Secure hair at the nape of your neck and, when possible, wear a neck gaiter around the back of your head and across your nose to keep loose hairs secured. Bonus tip: Keep a compact brush on your ride so you can brush your hair upon arrival at your destination. Prepare Appropriately for Riding Conditions - Weather is unpredictable, and you should be ready for whatever Mother Nature throws your way. Regardless of the forecast, always make a plan for unforeseen conditions like wind and rain. An easy way to stay prepared is to keep a small packable jacket on your ride so you’re never left without an extra layer. Cooler conditions call for warm yet lightweight gear such as a base layer with additional light layers over the top like a jacket or thin vest. Hotter days require vented clothing that allows airflow to keep you cool and dry. Consider Your Passenger’s Safety The most important rule for packing a passenger is ensuring your bike has a specific seat intended for a second rider. Be aware of how the added weight can affect the handling and behavior of the vehicle. Generally, riding with a passenger requires more gradual riding from acceleration and braking to steering. Instruct your passenger how you prefer him or her to ride with you to ensure the most enjoyment possible.

Men's Health Month It's Time To Resume Health Screenings And Procedures (BPT) - The pandemic caused massive disruptions in health care, from cancellation of elective surgeries to patients putting off critical screenings and procedures, including colonoscopies, mammograms, knee or hip replacement surgeries, and even in some cases more urgent heart procedures. As a consequence, many preventable health problems may show an alarming increase in the near future. Anesthesiologists who provide anesthesia or sedation for many of these procedures urge patients to get back on track and schedule your test,

46

screening or surgery as soon as possible, especially because some hospitals and health systems are experiencing a backlog. Nearly one in four people experienced a disruption to their plans to have a procedure or test during the past year. Of those, 16% said they are planning to reschedule, but haven't yet, and 10% aren't planning to reschedule at all, according to the National Poll on Healthy Aging. Nearly 10 million cancer screenings were missed during the pandemic, according to cancer

researchers. "With safety measures in place and COVID-19 numbers decreasing, it is vital for everyone to resume their lifesaving and life-changing screenings and procedures," said Randall M. Clark, M.D., FASA, president of the American Society of Anesthesiologists (ASA). "Your health and well-being may depend on it." If you are scheduling a longdelayed screening or procedure that requires anesthesia or sedation, ASA recommends seven ways to ensure you are prepared and as healthy as possible. Practice healthy behaviors Adjusting your diet to include healthier choices in the weeks leading up to your surgery or procedure can help you become stronger and recover quicker. Exercise can also help reduce complications and hospital stays, so if you are active, keep it up, and if not, consider working with your doctor to increase activity levels in the weeks before surgery. Stop smoking - Smoking increases the risk of anesthesia-related problems such as wound infections, pneumonia and heart attacks. Quit smoking as soon as possible before the procedure. Connect with your anesthesia care team - Be sure your anesthesia care is led by an anesthesiologist, a medical doctor who has 12-14 years of education and clinical training to deliver safe, high-quality care. Whether you have an

appointment with your anesthesiologist in advance of your procedure or meet them immediately before, be sure to share details about your overall health, medications you are taking, use of recreational drugs (including marijuana) and alcoho. with the anesthesiologist in advance. Understand COVID-19 testing - You likely will be tested for COVID-19 a day or two before your surgery. If you have had COVID-19 recently, your surgery may be delayed for your own safety. Know what - and when - to eat and drink - When your surgery is planned, your anesthesia care team will let you know when to stop eating or drinking prior to the procedure. Don't assume you should stop your medications - In most cases, you should continue taking your medications before the procedure because they are important to your health. Advance preparation can help ensure you are ready for a procedure, but it's important to take that first step by scheduling your important test or surgery without delay. Support for Parents and Guardians During the Baby Formula Shortage While the country’s supply of baby formula has been significantly impacted throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, several recent recalls and supply chain issues have caused an urgent shortage over the last few weeks. “We at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children's Hospital empathize with local families that are struggling with the formula shortage crisis,” says J. Nathan Hagstrom, MD, Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at Lehigh Valley Reilly Children’s Hospital. “So many parents and guardians are struggling to get basic nutrition for their children, and we are here to help you in any way we can.” The do’s: If you can’t find baby formula at your regular stores, check smaller stores or try shopping at reputable online grocers and retailers. Buy no more than a two-week supply of formula if you can find it in stock. Buying an appropriate amount and not overpurchasing will help combat the shortage. The don’ts: Do not dilute formulas, as this lessens

the proteins and other nutritional elements found in the formula. Do not try to make your own formula at home, as it may be lacking in necessary nutritional elements and can become contaminated. Do not substitute toddler formulas for infant formulas. Recalled formula substitutions: There are many reputable sources that can help you find a suitable substitution for your child’s usual formula. However, before making any changes to your infant’s formula habits, it’s best to contact their pediatrician for guidance. The American Academy of Pediatrics offers additional tips for parents and guardians during the formula shortage on their website, HealthyChildren.org. But, when it comes to specific questions about your child, it’s best to contact their care team. “Your child’s pediatrician will be more than happy to provide guidance and help you navigate this challenging time,” Hagstrom says.

Strength Training Supports Health Across Your Lifespan by Dr. Candice Dutko, DNP It’s almost summer, so “sun’s out, guns out” right?! Truth being… we shouldn’t view strength training or weight lifting as something we doto prepare our “summer bodies”...or something only those who are young should do. Strength training is something many, if not all of us would benefit from incorporating regularly into our weekly routines. Furthermore, it is almost never too late to start as there are benefits to incorporating some form of strength training to our weekly wellness routines that have tremendous benefits across our lifetime. Strength training, also known as resistance training, is an activity that helps to promote development of strength. Many times, resistance training is associated with lifting actual barbells and dumbbells, but could also involve other forms of resistance such as bands, cables, and kettlebells. One does not need to be able to lift hundreds of pounds to experience the benefits of resistance training. The challenge should be relative to the person. However, it is important that you continuously challenge yourself. As a particular exercise becomes easier, it would be of great benefit to challenge yourself with something slightly heavier.

Research abounds with evidence supporting the benefits of strength training for women and men across the lifespan. Aside from the improvements that can be made in bone mineral density (BMD), resistance training also helps to improve function and stability, other key factors that help reduce fall risk. Reducing fall risk through improving strength also helps to promote a fuller life as we enter our later years and may lead to a greater sense of independence. Given the statistics available regarding those at risk or who are living with osteoporosis, it becomes all the more important for women to pursue some form of resistance training. According to the International Osteoporosis Foundation (IOF) (2022), approximately 21.2% of women over 50 globally are estimated to have osteoporosis compared to approximately 6.3% of men. Of even greater concern, the IOF (2022) statistics reveal that 61% of the fractures that do occur related to osteoporosis, the patients are women. Research has demonstrated that women who started resistance training in their 50’s, 60’s, and 70’s have experienced an improved BMD following initiation of a resistance training program at least 2-3 days per week. I Believe Most People Are Good by John Degenhart, DC

I woke up on a sunny Saturday morning, got in my car to do some errands, and I heard this catchy Country song on the radio singing, “I believe most people are good.” How mothers are saints, and days go slow but years go fast, but the song made me think. The Bible says, “All people are sinners except for the grace of God.” Which means that the stain of sin is in all of us, and only by accepting God’s grace in our life can we allow the good inside of us to overcome the evil inside of us. So I believe all people have good and bad inside them, some allow circumstances to bring out their worst side, while others transcend circumstances and let their holy side shine. I had a patient once who for ten minutes gave me a non-stop complaint of how terrible his neighbors are, how his boss pushes him too hard and is unappreciative, and how his kids just want him to pay their bills. When he stopped for a breath, I interrupted with a prayer: “Dear Lord, I praise you for working in this man’s life, and giving him the strength to look to you for love and peace in the midst of his chaotic life.” I got a letter a month later from him. It stated, “Thank you, I was angry at first by your prayer. But I got it. You were telling me to stop looking at the problem, but look to God, the problem-solver. Now I feel a freedom in smiling as I give my worries to God, and I feel my good nature overcoming my weaker nature. I got in a bad habit of dwelling on the negatives.” As you read this, whatever anger, worry, or complaint right now that you have in your heart, praise God for his greatness! He will help you overcome it, and you will realize that in the midst of any bad circumstance, you can overcome it, and you will realize that in the midst of any bad circumstance, you can be your best self. It will give you a strength and confidence to overcome all the storms that this life will bring your way. So the truth is, most people are not good. All are sinners. But with God’s grace and help, we can let our goodness overcome our evil. I pray you do.

Who Needs A Sunscreen? by Stephen Schleicher, MD

Warm weather is upon us and the American Academy of Dermatology just published a guide answering some common questions regarding sunscreens. Here are a few key points: 1) Who needs a sunscreen? Everyone. Sunscreen use can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race. In fact, it is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime 2) When should I use sunscreen? Every day if you will be outside. The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round. Even on cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin. 3) How much sunscreen should I use, and how often should I apply it? Most people only apply 25-50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. Apply enough sunscreen to cover all skin that clothing will not cover. Most adults need about 1 ounce — or enough to fill a shot glass — to fully cover their body. Don't forget to apply to the tops of your feet, your neck, your ears and the top of your head. When outdoors, reapply sunscreen approximately every two hours, or after swimming or sweating. 4) What is the difference between chemical and physical sunscreens? Chemical sunscreens work like a sponge, absorbing the sun’s rays. They contain one or more of the following active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. Physical sunscreens work like a shield, sitting on the surface of your skin deflecting the sun’s rays. They contain the active ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. 5) Is a high-number SPF better than a lownumber one? Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97 percent of the sun's UVB rays. Higher-number SPFs block slightly more of the sun's UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100 percent of the sun's UVB rays. And one additional word of advice: Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look tan, you may wish to use a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen as well.

Common Shoulder Injuries and How To Fix Them by Ting Oh, PT at Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers Summer sports such as baseball, softball, tennis, swimming and golf require a lot of repetitive use of our arms and can cause shoulder pains and injury. Common sporting injuries include rotator cuff tendinitis/tears, bursitis, sprains and dislocations. Most of these injuries can be managed naturally but knowing what is causing the pain and the extent of the injury helps in seeking the right treatment. A quick way to figure out what is causing shoulder pain is through ultrasound imaging. It allows us to see inside the body to see soft tissue structures such as the rotator cuff tendons. It has a 92%

accuracy rate in detecting rotator cuff tears. Once we know what structures are affected and the severity of the injury, we can figure out the best treatments to perform. The most common tissues injured are the rotator cuff. There are 4 rotator cuff tendons and knowing which one isinjured can help with knowing which area to treat. On top of this, knowing the severity of the injury such as if it is tendinitis or a tear can help determine what treatments will work the best. Continued on page 53

Continued from page 48 I cannot say it enough…it is never too late to start! I started lifting weights at the age of 34 and now at the age of 41, it is one of my favorite activities in the gym! And, you don’t need to live at the gym 5+ days a week to see improvements. As mentioned above, it has been shown that one can experience the benefits of resistance training in even at least 2 days a week. I have clients that lift on average 3 days per week and have experienced great results. I often see people overlook strength training when they begin their weight loss journey with the misconception that they should lose their desired weight first before considering a lifting or resistance training program. Instead, they focus on doing more cardio. Yes, it is beneficial to have some form of cardiovascular activity in your daily routine. For example, last month I wrote about the benefits of walking as an excellent way to improve your overall health and well-being. (Didn’t get a chance to read it? You can find that article in the blog section of my website!). However, to amplify your results, if you are already doing some form of cardiovascular activity, your time is better spent doing some resistance/weight training instead of another cardiovascular activity. All this information, but where to start?! If you are fortunate enough to have a gym membership, there are likely a number of resistance training options available. If just starting out and prefer to workout at home, dumbbells are a great way to get started… especially for those on a limited budget. I posted a video on YouTube where I talk about my recommended strategies for starting your home gym with dumbbells (go

Panorama Community Magazine to YouTube and type in the search words “Coach Candice Home Gym”). One key item to keep yourself safe would be to always lift within your capabilities and challenge yourself within reason. Proper form and proper progression are some key practices to help minimize risk of injury. In addition, it will always be important to gauge your performance and improvement against your own personal best, and not to the personal best of others. We are all on our own journey and we should not compare our Chapter 1 to someone else’s Chapter 10 or Chapter 20. We all start where we start and getting started is the most important part! Lastly, when in doubt, seek the guidance of a professional. A professional will properly assess you, discuss with you your goals, and develop a program customized to you. Some people are able to implement resistance training programs with the direction of an app, online programs, and/ or online videos. As always, I am happy to answer any questions you might have! Please don’t hesitate to reach out. I’d love to hear about how weight lifting has enhanced your life!

Preventing and Treating the World’s the Cancer Treatment Most Common Cancer byCenter at Hazleton With over 5 million cases diagnosed in the United States each year, skin cancer isby far the most common cancer. One in five Americans will develop skin cancer in the course of their lifetime. Fortunately, skin cancer is also one of the most preventable forms of cancer. Approximately 90 percent of nonmelanoma skin cancers and 85 percent of melanoma cases are associated with exposure to ultraviolet radiation from the sun according to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the only international organization devoted solely to education, prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment of the world’s most common cancer. By sharing facts about the dangers of unprotected exposure and encouraging people to check their skin for warning signs, lives can be saved. Skin cancer occurs when there are abnormalities in the cells that make up the skin. There are several types of malignant skin cancers. Two main types are basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growing cancer found in the base of the epidermis that accounts for about 90% of all skin cancers. It seldom spreads, but if left untreated can invade bone and other tissues under the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma is found on the surface of the skin. It can be more aggressive, can grow deep below the skin and spread to distant areas of the body. A third type of skin cancer, called melanoma, begins in the cells that produce pigment in the skin. This type is less common, but more serious. However, if caught early, there is a nearly 97% chance for cure. Since its inception in 1979, The Skin Cancer Foundation has always recommended using a sunscreen with an SPF 15 or higher as an important part of a complete sun protection regimen. Sunscreen alone is not enough, however. Below is a list of skin cancer prevention tips: Seek the shade, especially between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. Avoid skin burns. Avoid tanning and never use UV tanning beds. Cover up with clothing, including a broadbrimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses. Use a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 15 or higher every day. For extended outdoor activity, use a water-resistant, broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher. Apply 1 ounce (2 tablespoons) of sunscreen to your entire body 30 minutes before going outside. Reapply every two hours or immediately after swimming or excessive sweating. Keep newborns out of the sun. Sunscreens should be used on babies over the age of six months. Examine your skin head-to-toe every month.

See your physician every year for a professional skin exam. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is used in the treatment of skin cancer. EBRT is a painless and noninvasive treatment for skin cancer, damaging cancer cells and their ability to multiply. During treatment, highenergy X-rays are delivered to the cancer cells with a linear accelerator (LINAC). Radiation is very damaging to the cancer cells, but is well tolerated by the surrounding normal cells. Also, radiation penetrates only a very short distance into the skin, so that internal organs can be completely spared from its effects. Patients treated with external beam radiation therapy receive a certain number of daily radiation treatments usually over a period of four to five weeks. Treatments are outpatient and usually take about 15 minutes. Side effects are generally minimal, and most patients return to routine activities immediately after each treatment. To learn more about how we treat skin cancer with radiation therapy, please contact the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton at (570) 459-3460 or visit www. CancerTreatmentCenterHazleton.com

For example, if there is tendinitis, you want to break up the scar tissue and load the tendon to assist in the healing. But if there is a tear, you want to zxdencourage the tendon to heal and loading it through exercise may just make the tear worse. Common treatments that can be helpful with tendinopathy include an acoustic wave machine which can help break up the scar tissue and encourage the tendon to heal. This along with a particular exercise program called eccentric exercises can help load and strengthen the tendon during the healing process. So if you have a painful shoulder from playing sports, be sure to get it looked at before it stops you from playing. The Team at FYZICAL Therapy are experts at managing sports injuries. A quick ultrasound test can figure out what is causing your problems and a plan can be put in place to help the injury heal and get you back to playing your best. To get more information, visit www. fyzical.com/Hazleton or catch our TV show “Wellness through FYZICAL Therapy” on WYLN.
