Meet Jacque Lynne…
The Panorama Mascot!
This month, I would like to introduce Jacque Lynne to all our readers and advertisers! About a year and a half ago, my grandchildren, Alex & Vada, who were 7 years old at the time, spotted a brown tiger striped cat at our office property. They both insisted that I get food and water. So, of course, I did, and this begins the story. This little cat was timid and shy at first and did not let us get close. We took such a liking to the cat we felt the need to name it. We decided to call him Jack but to our surprise Jack was a Jackie! So now we have a Jacque Lynne! Every morning, when I would arrive at the office, she would greet me in the parking lot knowing it was time to eat. If for some reason, she was not around all I would have to do is shake the bag of food and call out her name and she would come running! She would get fresh food and water twice a day. As the months passed, Jacque Lynne took a shine to me, and we became friends. She allowed me to come closer and closer to her. Eventually, I was able to pet her and pick her up. She realized she could trust me at this point and adopted me! During the winter months we tried several types of outside shelters which she refused to use. Instead, she chose to live in an abandoned taxicab! Spring had sprung and she was still around, so we decided to rescue her and
make her the Panorama Mascot! We took her to West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital and with the help of Dr. Trippett and Pam, Jacque received all her necessary shots, and we had her spayed. We then felt confident that we could bring her into the office, and she has adapted well to becoming an indoor cat. She is spoiled rotten and has everything a cat could want or need from specialty food, treats and bottled water to toys galore and the Taj Mahal of cat towers. This little bundle of feline joy has become a very loyal companion. Jacque Lynne enjoys having her belly rubbed, often gives love bites and kisses and her all-time favorite is to lay on my desk while I am working. She is a wonderful addition to our work environment; she is friendly, and she likes to greet everyone that comes into the office. She attends all the staff meetings, writes all the checks, and supervises me on a daily. In reality, this is her office, and we just visit her! Here are some snapshots of her. As you can see, she is in complete charge!

Summer Treats That Beat The Heat!
(Family Features) Whether your family’s ideal summer day consists of swimming, hiking, biking or simply enjoying the sunshine, all that time in the heat calls for a sweet way to cool off. It’s hard to beat a homemade treat loaded with favorite summertime flavors that’s as cold and creamy as it is sweet and delicious.
For a lighter, better-for-you solution, this Watermelon Gelato has about half the fat and fewer calories than traditional ice cream but with equally mouthwatering flavor. In fact, the word “gelato” means “ice cream” in Italian, and while the two frozen desserts have much in common, gelato is typically lower in fat with more density. If you’re looking for an added touch of tastiness, try adding a few chocolate chips to the mix in the last few minutes of churning in your ice cream maker, or simply add some on top before serving. When a summer weekend offers
opportunities for morning kitchen lessons with the kiddos, they can help measure ingredients for Watermelon Ice Cream Bars and watch the magic happen as you mix up a watermelon curd, homemade crust and whipped cream. Once your creation freezes completely throughout the day, turn out and cut into bars for a cold afternoon treat following all that fun in the sun. While sweet and tasty, these desserts also provide a bite of hydration with the power of watermelon, which is 92% water for a delicious way to rehydrate. According to the Centers for
Disease Control and Prevention, daily fluid intake is defined as the amount of water consumed from foods, plain drinking water and other beverages, meaning you don’t have to rely only on what you drink to meet your fluid needs. Because what you eat also provides a significant portion of daily fluids, fruits and vegetables like watermelon can help you and your family stay hydrated for whatever summer days bring your way. How To Host A Healthful Summertime Gathering (BPT) - As the sun starts to shine brighter and the warmer weather invites us to gather with friends and family, it's important to continue prioritizing our health and wellness throughout the season. One way to do so? Serving good-for-you foods when spending time with loved ones. Registered dietitian Natalie Rizzo shares how she infuses wellness into her gatherings by creating a nutritious and delicious menu, so that you too can host with wellbeing in mind this summer. One ingredient Natalie always includes in her dishes to pack a nutritious punch is almonds. In just one handful (1 ounce), almonds offer 6 grams of plant protein, 4 grams of fiber, 13 grams of unsaturated fat and only 1 gram of saturated fat. Almonds also contain 50% of your daily intake of antioxidant vitamin E and 20% of your daily intake of magnesium. When using almonds for healthful sides and entrees, Natalie suggests: * Add almonds to your sweet and savory dishes. The buttery flavor complements both tastes. * Use different forms of almonds - from whole or slivered almonds to almond butter or almond milk. You can get a lot of versatility out of this one nut! to pick blueberries. Ted, who turned 95, in March spends endless hours keeping the grass and weeds at bay. He also plants flowers and landscapes the grounds so all of their customers have an enjoyable and memorable visit to the farm. “Blueberries are incredibly nutritious and tasty; we invite everyone to stop in for some great taste and fresh air.” Remember to call for a recorded message for days and hours of operations at 570-379-2908.

On average, Americans eat about 23 gallons of ice cream each year, according to the International Dairy Foods Association (IDFA). July is National Ice Cream Month, which some might see as a good excuse to eat even more ice cream. According to the International Dairy Foods Association, National Ice Cream Month was signed into public law by President Ronald Reagan on July 9, 1984, with Presidential Proclamation 5219. It designated July as National Ice Cream Month and the third Sunday
of July as National Ice Cream Day. The decrees originated in the Senate with Joint Resolution 298 (sponsored by Senator Walter Dee Huddleston of Kentucky) and in the House of Representatives with Joint Resolution 543 (sponsored by Representative Kika de la Garza of Texas). Congress then requested President Ronald BEST SELECTION OF Reagan to issue SNACKS IN THE AREA! a proclamation in

We’d suggest celebrating by having an ice cream party, splitting an ice cream cake, surprising friends with a legen-dairy gift, making your own ice cream at home, or visiting one of our local ice cream shops. Lemons truly are a year-round classic and their bright, floral aroma and tangy flavor can brighten up any dish or drink on a hot summer day. Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori Milk Glass Collecting By Dr. Lori Verderame The bright white milk glass bud vase that stood quietly on your mother’s kitchen shelf since the 1950s is actually an object with a history that dates to the Italian Renaissance era. In fact, milk glass originated in the famous glass furnaces of Venice Italy and was introduced in the 1500s when objects were desired for their color and affordability. Milk glass was a cheaper alternative to porcelain, the highly sought after ceramic type that people wanted in Europe. Mainly produced in China, porcelain’s bright white color and durable nature was all the rage with the Europeans in the 1500s and 1600s. To produce something similar to porcelain’s color and durability, milk glass answered a global need. Since porcelain was a highly regarded import product which the Europeans wanted badly, milk glass presented a new option for those middle and lower class collectors. By the 18th Century, Americans collected Chinese porcelain including famous figures such as George and Martha Washington and used it for entertaining. The widespread interest in porcelain made the inexpensive and handsome look-alike objects made of milk glass a perfect alternative for collectors and salesmen alike. If you want to start or add to a milk glass collection, check out online and traditionan auctions, yard sales, estate sales. Also, vintage and antiques selling websites like
eBay, Rubylane.com, Etsy.com, and others present a great option for many collectors and resellers in search of milk glass pieces. Some interesting aspects of milk glass feature characteristics like patterns, shapes, sizes and even nuances of color. My YouTube.com/DrLoriV videos show you how to tell valuable milk glass items and what they are worth. Also, some of the popular patterns and designs of milk glass impact their value. For instance, figural rabbit or hen covered game dishes in milk glass are collectibles that date to the late 19th and 20th Centuries. When it comes to milk glass, certain patterns, shapes, and styles are highly sought after such as pedestal planters, embossed pitchers with fruit, particularly grapes and apples, and flower motifs such as daisies, roses, and leaves, chalice cups, tapered bud vases and pairs of figural candlesticks. Milk glass was used in homes since the 20th Century in traditional and more recently innovative ways. For home décor, milk glass offers versatility and timeless look has helped the vintage objects retain popularity over the centuries. For instance, milk glass has retained its popularity because of its versatile style. Planters and vases are the most popular types of milk glass objects. Milk glass pieces can range
in value from $15-$25 for a small milk glass vase to hundreds of dollars to a large punchbowl set with matching cups in a highly decorative pattern in excellent condition. Milk glass is often associated with weddings –white symbolizes purity— and with children. White milk glass items have been found to add style to wedding receptions and outdoor parties as well as nurseries and family rooms. Milk glass often makes an appearance during early summer when parties and specifically weddings require white bud vases for home and garden décor. White goes with anything and gives a fresh, clean look to any space. How To Be A Savvier Shopper (Family Features) Whether you’re shopping online or in-store, you can ensure you’re getting the most for your money with a little extra planning. These savvy shopping tips can help you score the most savings and added benefits while you’re at it. Time Your Purchase Before any big purchase, spend time researching the product and retailers to find potential upcoming sales or promotions. Also be conscious of the calendar and holidays or gift-giving events that might prompt special offers on an item you’re looking to buy. Another smart strategy: shopping end-of-season sales when items are marked down to make way for new inventory. Use Digital Shopping Tools You may be leery of signing up for promotional emails but remember – it’s only junk mail if it isn’t useful. Putting your name on mailing lists of your favorite retailers and brands is a good way to get early or exclusive access to special offers and coupons. Downloadable browser extensions and plug-ins are other costsaving tools that are increasingly popular. THE 44 Broadway, Jim Thorpe • (570) 325-8380 Unique Gifts from the USA & Ireland!
When you’re shopping with one or more of these tools installed, your browser automatically checks for coupons or price comparisons that allow you to get the best available deal. Shop Refurbished Whether it be for savings or sustainability (or both) refurbished products are a top choice among savvy shoppers. An option like eBay Refurbished delivers quality, like-new products at deep discounts from premium brands that are thoroughly vetted to meet high performance standards. You can shop across multiple condition grades and a wide range of price points within categories like tablets, smartwatches, laptops, desktops and smartphones – giving you more choice and the reassurance of buying a product that fits your specific needs and budget. Score big savings on trusted refurbished products at eBay.com/eBayRefurbished. Save on Shipping When you’re researching an online purchase and comparing prices, be sure to factor shipping into your total cost. Many retailers offer free shipping once you spend a certain amount, extend free shipping to preferred shoppers or offer periodic shipping promotions, so it’s worth exploring the options. Also beware that buying items on sale can drop you below free shipping minimums, so ultimately you pay more than you would have by paying full price. In some cases,

you can also save money by having an item shipped to the local brick-andmortar store and picking it up there. Take Advantage of Benefits Understanding the terms of your purchase can help protect you if there’s a problem and may even allow you to take advantage of special rewards. Before finalizing a transaction, check into the warranty options. Even refurbished products can come with warranties for a specified time. For example, all eBay Refurbished products are backed by one- or two-year warranties. For new items, some retailers offer the option to extend your warranty beyond what the manufacturer provides. In addition, some retailers offer money back incentives on certain purchases or allow you to accumulate rewards for discounts on future purchases. Shopping Refurbished is Easy on the Pocketbook and the Planet With inflation and scarcity issues remaining top of mind for consumers, shopping refurbished provides another option to buy in-demand products. In addition to value and availability, sustainability is another motivator for purchasing like-new. Shopping for refurbished goods, including those from eBay Refurbished, extends the life of the product and reduces harmful waste. For example, the United States Environmental Protections Agency estimates: • Purchasing a refurbished desktop computer displaces the energy used to charge more than 30,000 smartphones. • Purchasing a refurbished TV displaces around 360 miles driven in a car. • Purchasing a refurbished gaming console displaces around 180 miles driven in a car.

How To Raise Kind & Caring Children (Family Features) At some point, many parents will likely find themselves encouraging their children to “be kind” or “be friendly.” While they lead with the best of intentions, nearly all parents will worry about whether their child is kind to others when adults are not around. Consider these three ways parents can encourage empathy: 1.Try a new twist on “what did you do today?” Find a consistent time during the day to ask your child, “How did you help someone today?” or “How were you kind to someone today?” Be sure to offer your own examples from your day, too. This helps your child understand the connection between his or her actions and kindness to others. 2. Intentionally call out acts of kindness. Go beyond a simple “thank you” and be specific about why the action was kind: “That was so kind of you to clear the table after dinner. Your help made cleanup go faster. I appreciate that.” Don’t forget to use this same technique with other family members, too. 3. Build a toolbox of responses for tough situations. First, help your child build emotional literacy skills by helping him or her learn to identify and name feelings. Then work together to identify appropriate expressions of those feelings. Some healthy ways to react to emotional moments could be to find a quiet place to calm down, talk with a trusted adult like a teacher, squeeze fists or name the feeling: “I’m so angry right now.” For more tips about raising kind and caring children, visit kindercare.com.
Accounting Services Are Critical By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc. Accurately kept financial records for businesses give the owner(s) several tools that protect and help the success of their business. Those records provide accurate management reports for the profit and loss of the business and lead to the accurate tax preparation for the business, and of course tax planning. Record keeping is relatively simple once learned. Record keeping can be done daily, weekly, or monthly, depending on the size of your business. Some businesses need QuickBooks or some type of Computer Accounting Software. Some businesses can successfully get by on only using an excel spreadsheet. All businesses need to be recording their transactions accurately. Business owners that do not have the time, tools, or knowledge to do their own record keeping and preparation of Management Reports, the Profit and Loss, and Balance Sheet, should look at hiring a service to help them. Those services will help you keep your business healthy. It is not just the record keeping but the business advice. Accounting by definition is the analysis of the recorded transaction. Bookkeeping is the recording of the transactions of a business. Certified public accountants and their staff can do both, but are often not able to provide these services at a price that the small to medium size business person can afford. The larger business may find the CPA firm’s pricing affordable, but may not require the services of a CPA. An established qualified Bookkeeping service can give you everything a CPA can, except, Audited and “Certified” Reports. Honest Abe’s staff provides both services to do your work and/ or training for owner(s) to learning to do their own work. We verify the numbers we process by using your bank statements and credit card statements as well as your receipts. We work with any size business, with or without employees. We welcome meeting with you for an initial free consultation. Our President, Alice, has been crunching numbers since 1976! She opened Honest Abe’s in 2011 after moving to PA from SC in late 2005. “The EE-Yah Man”, Hughie Jennings By Rev. Connell McHugh
26
One of the greatest athletes to come from Northeastern PA was Hughie Jennings who was born April 2, 1869 in Pittston, PA and died February 1,1928 in Scranton Pa. He is buried in St. Catherine’s Cemetery in Moscow, PA. Like many Northeastern PA early Major League players, Hughie Jennings worked as a breaker boy as a youth, for 90 cents a day. As he grew older, he discovered he could make $5 a game playing semi-pro ball on weekends. Jennings went on to have a great career as both a Major League player and manager. He was elected to the Hall of Fame in 1945 by the Veterans Committee. Hughie Jennings first played for Allentown and then for Louisville. He became a star shortstop for the Baltimore Orioles and the Captain of their team in the 1890s. He may have been the best player in baseball from 1894 to 1898. His best year was 1896 when he hit .401 with 209 hits and 70 stolen bases and drove in an amazing 121 runs without hitting a homerun! In 1894, he hit .335 with 4 homeruns and 109 RBIs and in 1895 he batted .386 also with 4 homeruns and 125 RBIs. Jennings hit .355 in 1897 with 2 homeruns and 79 RBIs and in 1898 hit .328 with 7 homeruns and 87 RBIs. For his career, Jennings batted .311 with 1527 hits and 849 RBIs. He was a gap hitter more than a homerun threat and had 235 doubles and 87 triples but only had 18 career homeruns. Jennings was a fiery, scrappy player who also was a fine fielder. He led the League in being hit by pitches 5 straight years. For his career, Jennings was hit 287 times including 49 or 51 times
depending on whose statistics you accept in 1896, a record that was finally broken by Ron Hunt of the Mets in 1971. Hughie Jennings suffered 2 fractured skulls, one from being beaned by the flame throwing Hall of Famer, Amos Rusie who was nicknamed “The Hoosier Thunderbolt” and also when he errantly jumped into an empty swimming pool. While playing for Baltimore, Jennings had Hall of Fame teammates, John McGraw who became a great manager, tied with Casey Stengel for the most pennants won with 10, Willie Keeler, Wilbert Robinson and Joe Kelley. Their manager was Ned Hanlon, who was very skilled but taught his players “dirty baseball”. His teams always had a rough style of play. Hanlon encouraged his players to spike opposing ones, have hidden balls to pull out at opportune times, hold belt buckles, use obscenities, and generally intimidate both opponents and umpires. Jennings’ prime managerial years were from 1907 to 1920 when he was the skipper of the Ty Cobb led Detroit Tigers. Hughie got off to a fabulous start, winning pennants in each of his first 3 years, but

Panorama Community Magazine his teams lost the World Series to the Cubs in 1907 and 1908 and the Pirates in 1909. Jennings was very intelligent and an innovator. He is credited with inventing the cut off play and the first to second back to first double play. He was a fan favorite as a manager who was regarded as both an intelligent and tough leader. Jennings was nicknamed “The EE-Yah Man”. This was due to a yell he continually made from the third base coaching box when managing the Tigers. Jennings claimed “EE-Yah” was Hawaiian for “Watch Out”. He is often pictured on baseball cards yelling and making gyrations while coaching. Others say Jennings distinctive yell came from the expression “That’s the Way” which changed at first to “Way-Yah” to its final form of “EE-Yah”. The ear drum shattering call was heard on baseball diamonds for over 30 years. Jennings was replaced by Ty Cobb as manager after the 1920 season. He then became a coach for his former teammate, John McGraw, a good friend, who skippered the New York Giants. With McGraw and Jennings, the Giants proceeded to win 4 consecutive pennants. McGraw became ill during the 1925 season, and Jennings filed in as

manager. After the season, Jennings had a nervous breakdown and retired. When he was recovering, Jennings learned he had tuberculosis. During his last days, Jennings was anointed and received the sacraments from my Great Uncle, Monsignor Connell A. McHugh who attended him in his illness. The late Bishop John M. Dougherty told me a story years back about Hughie Jennings being at a Baptism, perhaps as a sponsor. The Pastor was away, and the assistant performed the Baptism. Jennings gave him a $100 tip, an unheard of amount at that time. As mentioned, Hughie Jennings was very intelligent. He earned a Law Degree during the Winters and then built up a successful practice. The former Mayor of Scranton, Tom Dougherty, and the owners of a religious goods store are relatives of Jennings. Baseball cards of Jennings are
very expensive, costing hundreds and even thousands of dollars in nice condition. He appears in such premium sets such as both the famous White Border and Gold Border Tobacco Card sets, the 1940 Playball set manufactured 12 years after his death. In 1960 and 1961, Fleer put out sets of old time ballplayers in which Jennings is included. I do have those cards which run only $5 to $10 and are plentiful. Autographs of Jennings are very costly if one is fortunate enough to locate one. I recently picked up a collection of reprint and retro cards for between $30 and $40. Some of the cards were used for this article. Panorama Community Magazine of Anthracite coal mining artifacts, tools, photographs, and memorabilia. Many unique attractions and exhibits are offered as part of this year’s Heritage Festival. In keeping with tradition, the Coal Miner’s Shoveling Competition is always a favorite event. Anyone over the age of 16 is invited to participate in this competition where the goal is to shovel a half-ton of coal in the shortest time. In past years this event has been very competitive drawing participants from throughout the coal region. This event begins at 2 PM with trophies being awarded to the winners. Interesting and fun exhibits will highlight coal region heritage and culture such as an old time “Wash Day” exhibit, antique vehicles, coal advertising signs, coal region beer trays, a display of old-fashioned moonshine making equipment, and mine safety and rescue displays. A variety of great coal region music will be featured throughout the Heritage Festival. Entertainment will be provided by WMGH Polka Program, live with “Polka Joe” Manjack, DJ Shawn Frederickson with classic coal region music, folk music by Jay Smar, and Dave Matsinko as they stroll the grounds. Throughout the day re-enactors will walk the grounds in authentic “patch town” outfits performing skits and telling stories of the mines. A wide variety of vendors, ethnic foods, and festival favorites will also be available. The Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival is put on every year by the Panther Creek Valley Foundation, a registered 501C3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the region’s Anthracite coal mining heritage. Electric VehiclesThe End Of The Internal Combustion Engine? By Thomas R. Buff The internal combustion engine has been around since the 1800s. Gas or diesel, the fuel goes in and is compressed. Bang! The pistons go up and down, the vehicle moves. Well there is more to it than that but you get the message. As we all know the push for a change from fossil fuels has been around for a long time. First came emissions laws then the hybrid and then the fully electric vehicles. With gasoline prices passing the five-dollar mark and climate changes being a hot topic, we are now seeing a big push for not only manufacturing more fully electric vehicles but also for ending the manufacture of the internal combustion engines in cars and light trucks in the very near future. Ten or twenty years ago the thought of a transition to electrification of the transportation industry would have been laughable. Although Electric vehicles or EVs have been around and designed as an alternative to the internal combustion powerplant the idea of replacing it has never been accepted. High cost and short battery life have kept customers away from purchasing the Hybrids and EVs that were supposed to take the world by storm. Tesla has changed the minds of many. They have proven that an electric vehicle can not only be a very reliable source of transportation but also can be purchased at a reasonable price. Many other manufactures have followed Tesla and introduced their own version of the EV and many have taken notice. The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E, Volkswagen ID.4 , Volvo XC90, and the Nissan Ariya are just a few of the new model EVs that are using lithium battery technology that offers long range, reliability and short charge times. According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, 91 percent of the energy consumed from the transportation industry comes from petroleum. They claim the transportation industry is also responsible for 28 percent of the greenhouse gas emissions in the U.S. So, the world is in fact, looking to transition away from the internal combustion engine and spark the electrification of the transportation areas. Some governments of major countries around the globe are beginning to place limitations in place for phased out the

I/C engine. General Motors will cease production of gasoline and diesel-powered cars and light trucks by 2035. Volkswagen will not produce gasoline or diesel engines after the 2026 model year. In Europe the manufactures of diesel trucks will phase out operations by 2040. So, the writing is on the wall. The electrification of the transportation industry is a hot topic. EVs are gaining popularity due to the increases in technology and customer satisfaction. But the end of the internal combustion engine will not
happen overnight. The current power grid and infrastructure is not capable of providing power for the hundreds of thousand charging stations that will need to be utilized. There are many factors that need to be taken into consideration before the demise of the gasoline or diesel engine. Will many popular engines that we are familiar with go away? Yes, they will. But it will take many, many years to phase them out. Happy Summer and Happy Motoring.

Three Ways to Have a StressFree Road Trip This Summer (BPT) - Vacationing with your family can be stressful when factoring in the logistics of keeping everyone happy. If you are one of the 60% of Americans currently planning summer getaways, here are a few hacks from Hampton by Hilton that will pave the way for a stress-free summer road trip. 1. Choose a hotel that includes breakfast - The most important meal of the day kick-starts your mood and energy, especially for the 79% of Americans who say they feel more productive after having breakfast. Yet, with only 19% reporting having breakfast every day, booking a getaway at a hotel with breakfast included jumpstarts your day, makes mornings simpler and puts an end to the hectic morning scramble.
Travelers can head to the lobby to enjoy breakfast favorites while waiting their turn to shower or grab a plate to bring back to their room. Hotel breakfast buffets also eliminate travel and wait times of eating at a restaurant, getting you on the road faster to vacation fun. 2. Enjoy your stay close to where you want to be - More than three in four travelers (77%) make relaxing and recharging a priority while on vacation and 41% say reconnecting with family and friends on trips boosts their overall wellness. With over 2,300 hotels in the U.S., road trippers are on average never more than 30 minutes away from a Hampton by Hilton. You won't have to go out of your way to find high quality, friendly and reliable accommodations, backed by the

Hampton 100% Guarantee, everywhere you want to be and close to those you love. Families can also enjoy some space to spread out by selecting suite guest rooms, when available, for separate living and sleeping areas. These rooms particularly come in handy for family members with varying bedtimes and provide extra space for active pets and kids to sprawl. Plus, having refrigerators and microwaves allow you to make your own quick meals, reheat leftovers and have snacks at the ready at all hours of the day. 3. Bring furry family members with you - A recent survey revealed that more than half (55%) of people with pets are likely to travel with their furry family member this summer, and with good reason: Not only do we want to spend time with Fido and Fifi, but we want to avoid the stress of boarding or leaving pets behind - for both our pets and us. Pet-friendly accommodations, such as Hampton by Hilton, ease the burden. Not only do these properties provide safe havens for our dogs and cats, but deliver a seamless experience, leaving you able to confidently focus on the moments that matter most. They also offer additional support through a partnership with Mars Petcare, which provides guests expert advice and tips, via online chat or phone, tailored to reduce stress and make the travel experience more seamless from planning through hotel stay. Remember, it's all about having fun and spending time together when it comes to family travel. As you begin to make your plans to hit the road this summer, happy pets, hot breakfast and finding your space can help keep travel-related stress at bay so you can truly enjoy a much-need getaway together.

S.J. Kowalski, Inc. Appreciates The Hard Work Of All Our Employees! Today many of us take indoor comfort for granted. But it’s the HVAC technicians who keep our HVAC systems running day and night. Extreme conditions are just another day for our HVAC heroes. A few hours without air conditioning or heat may be uncomfortable for us but imagine working in those conditions every day of the week! HVAC technicians tirelessly brave the sweltering heat and numbing cold to restore our comfort, often at the hottest and coldest times of the year. They go everywhere you would hate to be! Crawl spaces, attics and all points in between, that’s where you will find an HVAC pro. Depending on the age and condition of the building, they may run into anything from dust, debris and cobwebs to pests, mildew and mold, not to mention claustrophobically close quarters. HVAC technicians can save you money. Do you want your HVAC system to maximize your energy savings? An HVAC expert can help choose the right equipment for your home’s needs and your family’s heating and cooling habits. He or she can even recommend different thermostat options that range from set it and forget it simplicity to real time smartphone controls with power usage tracking. The savings don’t stop there!
Regular maintenance, provided by your trusted technician, helps keep your system running at peak efficiency. That prevents energy waste and minimizes wear and tear that can shorten the life of your HVAC investment. Don’t forget that saving energy means saving the earth’s valuable resources. 7 On Trend Kitchen Upgrades
Continued from page 40. window treatments and accent pieces. Subtle Kitchen Spice A stark white kitchen may feel crisp and clean, but it lacks the character that color brings. You can keep that airy feeling while infusing some gentle, welcoming warmth. Painted cabinets are on trend, so this is a perfect place to play with color. Use a light neutral taupe for the cabinets then balance with a warm, creamy white on the walls. If you’re worried the space may be dull, infuse a bit of color with a neutral blue on the backsplash. The soft hues work harmoniously for a simple but stylish space. “The Softened Refuge palette is designed to simplify color selection for a perfectly coordinated home design,” said Ashley Banbury, HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams senior color designer. “Color combinations within the Collection can easily be used to craft spaces that help promote positive physical and mental well-being.” Find more ideas for creating a sanctuary at home at hgtvhomebysherwinwilliams.com.

material, like tile, that is easy to clean and maintain. Multiple Appliances Function is front and center in residential kitchen design this year, and homeowners’ growing demands to go big on appliances is proof. From double ovens to extra dishwashers, homeowners are committing to more useful features. There are even some kitchens that boast two refrigerators, which may be a nod to the way grocery shopping habits shifted during the pandemic, with fewer, but larger, trips to the store. Walk-Through Pantries Whether you are capitalizing on the mystique of a “hidden” room or attracted to the idea of a more seamless aesthetic, a walk-through pantry can be a stunning and functional solution. With a walk-through pantry, you can add extra space to an existing pantry to create a better flow to your floor plan. Available in a variety of widths and heights, Wellborn Cabinet’s WalkThrough Pantry blends naturally into the rest of your cabinetry to create visual continuity. Integrated magnetic door catches add stability and keep doorways securely closed. Wood Finishes After years of painted cabinets and woodwork dominating kitchen design, wood grain finishes are making a comeback. The look is cozy and inviting, and with a wide span of stain options, it is equally possible to take the look ultra-modern or veer toward a more traditional style. Outside of cabinetry, there is plenty of room to incorporate the warmth of wood, such as butcher-block counters or exposed beams. Green, Blue and Earth Tones Jewel-inspired hues had their moment, but this season’s color scheme is more about subtle shades that meld with neutrals for lighter, brighter spaces that feel airier and more spacious. Greens, in particular, pair well with an array of wood finishes, whether cabinetry, countertops or furnishings. Integrating greens, blues and other nature-inspired colors allows you to bring earthy serenity to a bustling and busy room, and this

motif lends itself well to a design that creates a cohesive connection with adjacent outdoor living space. Clever Storage Solutions The kitchen is a busy place prone to clutter, and this season you will find multiple examples of practical solutions showing up in showcase kitchens. The features that can make your kitchen chores easier and neater come in all shapes and sizes. For example, discreet knife blocks tucked into drawers, drawer dividers for maximum customization and sliders that make it easy to empty the trash and recycling bins. Marble Countertops Marble is not necessarily a new trend, but this year’s attention is on slabs of marble with eye-catching veins that make counters really pop. For a fresh take on marble, forgo the typical white, gray or black styles in favor of color. Standout gold veining or even full slabs with stunning greens, blues and reds can make a statement. If budget is an issue, or you are worried about too much of a good thing, consider using a bold slab on a smaller space, like the island, rather than outfitting the entire kitchen. Summer Health Nutrition to Nourish Your Body — Protein Edition By Dr. Candice Dutko, DNP
This month, I appreciate the opportunity to write on the topic of protein! I received some feedback from people that this was a topic they wanted to learn more about. And, truth be told, it is an area where many people experience some challenges. Let’s learn about the importance of protein and strategies to help you consume more of it! Protein is essential for many biological functions within our body. There is not enough room within one article to discuss all the roles protein plays in our body; however, I will discuss just a few here.
One major function is muscle building and repair, as well as supporting our bones, tissues, ligaments, and immune system. As I mentioned in last month’s article, strength/resistance training across our lifetime is essential for enhanced health outcomes. (If you missed it, you can go to my website and read it in the “Blog” section). Our goal across our lifetime is to preserve our muscle mass to help support greater function. Therefore, it is essential we provide our body with the nutrition to do so. The more muscle mass we have, the higher our Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) is, especially at rest. Why does this matter? The more muscle mass we have, especially for those trying to lose weight, particularly through fat loss, is that it means we burn more calories just by merely existing. In other words, when we have more muscle, we are burning more energy at rest compared to those who have less muscle mass. Again, this is why I emphasized strength/ resistance training over additional cardio in last month’s article for those who are striving for fat loss. Protein intake also supports a greater sense of satiety. In other words, it helps us feel fuller longer. For example, those who have a breakfast composed mainly of carbs, particularly fast-digesting carbs, are likely to be hungry not too long after they just ate. People often then choose another relatively unbalanced meal that is heavier on carbs…and this perpetuates Making the Decision to Move is Difficult. the eating roller coaster throughout the Finding the Right Place is Easy. day. On the other hand, those who begin their day with a meal higher in protein, or • Housekeeping & Laundry Services • Personal Care who make the effort to add more protein • Transportation To Doctor Appointments • Secure Memory Care Unit to their meals, find their hunger much Be Safe • Cable For Television • Independent Apartments more manageable. • Daily Activities • 24 Hour Care Staff and Stay Another benefit of protein intake is its • Each Level Has It’s Own Dining Room • Licensed LPN’s & RN’s On Staff thermogenic effects within the body. Panorama Community Magazine us…but how do we fit more of it into our nutrition?” Let’s review some strategies for incorporating more into your daily nutrition. First, let’s look at what foods are generally considered higher in protein. For the most part, there are no inherently “bad” foods. On the other hand, there are foods we would benefit from eating “more” of, eating “some” of, and perhaps eating “less” of. For the sake of space, I am not able to provide that list here; however, if you go to my website (listed in my summary below) and go to the Blog section, I have posted the infographics from Precision Nutrition for you to review. Use that list as a guide when planning out your meals each day or for the week. Take it with you when you go to the store for some inspiration on what to choose! Next, you may be wondering, “how much protein should I be eating?”. It depends a lot on the individual and their current body composition, their age, and their activity level. Protein needs will also be dependent potentially on certain medical conditions. A broad guideline is anywhere from 0.8-1.2 grams of protein per pound of bodyweight. For example, with an average weight of 165 pounds, I eat anywhere from 160-170 grams of protein daily. I recently posted on my social media pages (and you can find that in the gallery on my website as well) how I generally accomplish that on a given day. One tip might be to plan out your protein first and once you have laid out the plan for that, everything else falls into place much easier. One strategy I use to consume enough protein is to prepare it in bulk. Each week, I pick two protein sources, such as chicken and beef, and I cook a big batch of it up and have one for lunch and the other for dinner. Each protein source (beef, chicken, pork, fish, etc.) has a different amino acid makeup. Therefore, to help ensure I do not become deficient in any one amino acid, I rotate through my proteins generally every other week. If I do chicken and beef one week, I might switch to pork, turkey, or fish the following week. Generally, I try to have fish 1-2 times per week each week. There is no reason for eating well to be boring and tasteless! Just because you are having one key ingredient (for example, chicken) doesn’t mean you can’t still have variety! On my social media pages, I recently provided information on
JULY 2022
how to prepare some protein in bulk and the variety of ways in which I enjoyed them throughout the week. Lastly, it helps to know our “why” behind why we do things. I encourage you to shift from an outcome-based thinking (such as “I want to weigh x number of pounds”) and instead focus on the process (for example, “I am eating to nourish my body and support my goals”). Personally, I tend to view my nutrition as “fueling my muscles” or “fueling my performance”. When I fuel my muscles and/or fuel my performance,
accomplishing my goals (body recomposition, getting stronger/fitter, etc) becomes the side effect of my efforts. Treating The Leading Cause Of Cancer Death By the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton According to the American Cancer Society (ACS), lung cancer is by far the leading cause of cancer death among both men and women, making up almost 25% of all cancer deaths. Each year, more people die of lung cancer than of colon, breast, and prostate cancers combined. The ACS estimates that about 236,740 new cases of lung cancer will be diagnosed in 2022, with 11,170 of those cases in Pennsylvania. Lung cancer is the uncontrolled growth of abnormal cells in one or both lungs. These abnormal cells do not carry out the functions of normal lung cells and do not develop into healthy lung tissue. As they grow, the abnormal cells can form tumors and interfere with the normal function of the lungs, which is to provide oxygen to the body’s organs. Once lung cancer is found and staged, your cancer care team will discuss your treatment options with you. Radiation therapy is a proven treatment option with a low risk of complications. There are several indications why radiation therapy might be used, including: - As the main treatment, especially if the lung tumor can’t be removed because of its size or location, if a person isn’t healthy enough for surgery, or if a person does not want surgery. - After surgery to help to eliminate any small areas of cancer that surgery might have missed.
46
- Before surgery to try to shrink a lung tumor to make it easier to remove. - To treat a single area of cancer spread, such as to the brain or bone. - To relieve (palliate) symptoms of advanced lung cancer such as pain, bleeding, trouble swallowing, cough, or problems caused by spread to other organs such as the brain. This can be accomplished by several methods including External Beam Radiation (X-Ray). At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton,we use radiation therapy to treat lung cancer. Radiation therapy for the treatment of lung cancer uses powerful, high-energy X-rays to kill cancer cells or keep them from growing. The radiation beam is aimed at the lung cancer tumor and kills the cancer cells only in that area of the lung. Radiation therapy is delivered safely, painlessly, and does not involve surgery. Treatments do not require hospitalization and only take about 10 to 15 minutes. Side effects are usually mild and manageable with medication. If you, or a loved one, have recently been diagnosed with lung cancer and would like to speak to a patient coordinator about your treatment options, please contact the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton today at (570) 459-3460 or visit HazletonCancerCenter.com.
Lehigh Valley Hospital – Hazleton & LVHN Nationally Recognized for its Commitment to Providing HighQuality Stroke Care Five Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN) hospitals have received achievement awards from the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines program for demonstrating commitment to following up-to-date, research-based guidelines for the treatment of stroke, ultimately leading to more lives saved, shorter recovery times and fewer readmissions to the hospital. Every 40 seconds, someone in the U.S. has a stroke or heart attack, and heart disease and stroke are the No. 1 and No. 5 causes of death in the United States, respectively. Studies show patients can recover better when providers consistently follow treatment guidelines. Get With The Guidelines puts the expertise of the American Heart Association and American Stroke Association to work for hospitals nationwide, helping ensure patient care is aligned with the latest evidenceand research-based guidelines. As participants in Get With The Guidelines programs, LVHN hospitals qualified for the awards by demonstrating how their organization has committed to improving quality care. “LVHN is committed to improving care by adhering to the latest treatment guidelines and streamlining processes to ensure timely and proper care for stroke,” Steven Lewis, MD, Endowed Chair, Neurology, said. “Get With The Guidelines allows our teams to put proven knowledge and guidelines to work on a daily basis, which helps us ensure more people in eastern Pennsylvania experience longer, healthier lives.” Continued on page 50.

A quick way to figure out what is causing shoulder pain is through ultrasound imaging. It allows us to see inside the body to see soft tissue structures such as the rotator cuff tendons. It has a 92% accuracy rate in detecting rotator cuff tears. Once we know what structures are affected and the severity of the injury, we can figure out the best treatments to perform. The most common tissues injured are the rotator cuff. There are 4 rotator cuff tendons and knowing which one is injured can help with knowing which area to treat. On top of this, knowing the severity of the injury such as if it is tendinitis or a tear can help determine what treatments will work the best. For example, if there is tendinitis, you want to break up the scar tissue and load the tendon to assist in the healing. But if there is a tear, you want to encourage the tendon to heal and loading it through exercise may just make the tear worse. Common treatments that can be helpful with tendinopathy include an acoustic wave machine which can help break up the scar tissue and encourage the tendon to heal. This along with a particular exercise program called eccentric exercises can help load and strengthen the tendon during the healing process. So if you have a painful shoulder from playing sports, be sure to get it looked at before it stops you from playing. The Team at FYZICAL Therapy are experts at managing sports injuries. A quick ultrasound test can figure out what is causing your problems and a plan can be put in place to help the injury heal and get you back to playing your best. Shop Around For The Right Chiropractor by John Degenhart, DC I know this article will get some of my colleagues upset with me, but I must speak what is in my heart. This past week I had several patients who came to me that said, “I went to another chiropractor in town, and they “popped” me so hard, I felt worse, and everybody told me you are gentle so now I’m here.” Then as they get off the table they say, “Wow, you are gentle, and I feel better already!” I think some people think that you need a rough adjustment to get faster or longer-lasting results. But that is not true. In my 42 years of being the busiest chiropractor in the area, I can tell you this—nobody is the same, every patient needs a unique adjustment to their age, their workload, and what past injuries they had. Some chiropractors just twist the lower back on both sides

of every patient. But if somebody has degenerated discs or past surgeries, that technique is too rough for them, in my opinion. Now there are some patients that can tolerate and do better with a rougher adjustment. But I tell you this. Every patient will improve with a gradual approach, and it breaks my heart to renew the confidence of a patient back to chiropractic when a D.C. has scared them. I know you build up a loyalty to your chiropractor. That trust relationship is beautiful. But as you get older, or have accidents, the same technique that you liked 20 years ago now is too much for your body. Chiropractic on social media looks so scary, I think some people with big egos like to sensationalize the adjustment. But it scares people. One

guy uses a rope to pull the head after the adjustment. That should never be done. As you read this, know that I love and respect all chiropractors. I am not putting anybody down. But every week when I get patients who see me and say, “Why didn’t my chiropractor do it this way—I feel great!” I want the patient to be empowered to realize that not all chiropractors are alike. If you had a bad experience, shop around until you find the right one.

Who Needs A Sunscreen? by Stephen Schleicher, MD
Warm weather is upon us and the American Academy of Dermatology just published a guide answering some common questions regarding sunscreens. Here are a few key points: 1) Who needs a sunscreen? Everyone. Sunscreen use can help prevent skin cancer by protecting you from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Anyone can get skin cancer, regardless of age, gender or race. In fact, it is estimated that one in five Americans will develop skin cancer in their lifetime 2) When should I use sunscreen? Every day if you will be outside. The sun emits harmful UV rays year-round. Even on cloudy days, up to 80 percent of the sun’s harmful UV rays can penetrate your skin. 3) How much sunscreen should I use, and how often should I apply it? Most people only apply 25-50 percent of the recommended amount of sunscreen. Apply enough sunscreen to cover all skin that clothing will not cover. Most adults need about 1 ounce Bathing & Dressing Assistance • Person — or enough to fill a shot glass — to fully Preparation • to Transferring coverMeal their body. Chemical sunscreens work like a sponge, absorbing the sun’s rays. They contain one or more of the following active ingredients: oxybenzone, avobenzone, octisalate, octocrylene, homosalate, and octinoxate. Physical sunscreens work like a shield, sitting on the surface of your skin deflecting the sun’s rays. They contain the active ingredients zinc oxide and/or titanium dioxide. 5) Is a high-number SPF better than a lownumber one? Dermatologists recommend using a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30, which blocks 97 percent of the sun's UVB rays. Higher-number SPFs block slightly more of the sun's UVB rays, but no sunscreen can block 100 percent of the sun's UVB rays. And one additional word of advice: Avoid tanning beds. Ultraviolet light from the sun and tanning beds can cause skin cancer and wrinkling. If you want to look tan, you may wish to use a self-tanning product, but continue to use sunscreen as well.

The institute’s creation was made possible by a significant gift from the Fleming Foundation, established by the late businessman and philanthropist Richard Fleming, a long-time chairman of LVHN’s Board of Trustees. The gift is the largest single endowment in the Fleming Foundation’s 32-year history. “Institutes are hubs of innovation, research and clinical education, with the singular aim to enhance
and improve patient care, all close to home.” – Brian A. Nester, DO, MBA, LVHN President and CEO “This will help ensure that already leading-edge neurological and neurosurgical care becomes even better,” said Steven Lewis, MD, Lehigh Valley Fleming Neuroscience Institute Physicianin-Chief and head of neurology at LVHN. “When people anywhere in the country think of outstanding places for clinical neurological and neurosurgical care, LVHN will be on that list.” LVHN President and CEO Brian A. Nester, DO, MBA, said establishing an institute is not a superficial naming exercise. “It’s real progress,” he said. “Institutes are hubs of
innovation, research and clinical education, with the singular aim to enhance and improve patient care, all close to home.” Clinical research currently plays a significant, and increasing role within neuroscience at LVHN, now with 15-20 active neurologic clinical trials in progress at any one time. LVHN serves about 32,000 neurology patients and about 18,000 neurosurgery patients annually, a number that has grown significantly in recent years. Establishing the Neuroscience Institute will allow LVHN to significantly expand its neuroscience team over the next several years as patient demand continues to escalate. Needs are great in all the subspecialty areas of neurology. Walter Jean, MD, the LVHN Endowed Chair of Neurosurgery and Chief of the Neurosurgery Continued on page 53.

Benefits Of Taking Aspirin And The Main Reasons People Take It (BPT) - There is no more familiar item in your medicine cabinet than a bottle of aspirin. Aspirin has been sold for over a century as an over-thecounter medication and millions of people take it. Aspirin is used to help treat pain associated with headaches and arthritis, and for fever reduction. People also take low-dose aspirin daily as part of their doctorrecommended plan following a heart attack or clot-related stroke for secondary prevention to prevent another heart attack or clot-related stroke. There are about 40 million vascular patients who may be on an aspirin therapy plan as advised by their doctor. "Aspirin is an important and trusted medication with benefits for a number of different purposes," said Mayme Lou Roettig, RN, executive medical
director, PLx Pharma Inc. "It can also have side effects and needs to be tailored to individual patient benefit versus risk profile. Although aspirin is sold over the counter, doctors may recommend using aspirin for secondary prevention. Your medical condition is unique to you, and your doctor can help determine what you need, and what to be careful about." Benefits from taking aspirin Here are the primary reasons people take aspirin. Pain relief: Aspirin is a type of nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) effective for the temporary relief of minor aches and pains and to reduce fevers. Aspirin is just one of several NSAIDs available. It's always a good idea to ask your healthcare provider which specific NSAID(s) would be most beneficial to you given ELEGANT ACCOMODATIONS AT THE MOST AFFORDABLE RATES!

the type of pain you're experiencing, and your medical history. Heart attack: According to the American Heart Association, about 720,000 people in the U.S. have their first heart attack every year and an additional 335,000 will have a recurrent heart attack or a secondary event. In the U.S. a heart attack occurs every 40 seconds. Heart attacks occur when the blood flow to the heart is blocked by a blood clot. A blocked artery prevents oxygen-rich blood from reaching a vital section of the heart. If the blood flow is completely disrupted, that part of the heart can die. While lifestyle changes, such as improving your diet and increasing exercise, can help prevent a heart attack, aspirin can reduce the risk of another heart attack by 31% by making blood platelets less likely to stick together in a clot. Stroke: The American Heart Association also reports that about 610,000 people experience a new stroke in the U.S. and 185,000 have a recurrent or secondary event. Stroke is the leading cause of serious longterm disability. Stroke occurs when blood flow to the brain is diminished or disrupted preventing brain tissue from getting needed oxygen and nutrients. Some brain cells begin to die, which can lead to loss of functions controlled by that part of the brain, such as walking or talking. Like a heart attack, lifestyle changes help reduce the chances of having a stroke and aspirin is clinically shown to help lower the risk of another clot-related stroke. Common side effects of aspirin Patients on aspirin therapy regardless of the dosage form may experience side effects and stop taking it. In fact, some patients who are taking physician-advised aspirin therapy stop taking it due to gastrointestinal (GI) issues, which is the most common side effect. This includes rare gastric ulcers or gastric bleeding as well as more common dyspepsia - also known as indigestion or upset stomach discomfort. If you were recommended aspirin

Panorama Community Magazine by your physician to prevent another heart attack or stroke and experience side effects such as stomach discomfort or gastrointestinal issues, you should contact your doctor right away. Roettig suggests speaking to your doctor if there are alternatives that may help avoid or minimize potential side effects. Enteric Coated Aspirin Aspirin has been around for more than 100 years. Enteric coated aspirin, the most commonly used formulation, was developed more than 50 years ago with the intention of preventing aspirin from dissolving in the stomach. The enteric coated formulation was designed to help protect the stomach lining from irritation, especially for those who take aspirin on a regular basis. However, studies have not definitively demonstrated that enteric coated aspirin protects the stomach from irritation. According to the FDA class Aspirin Professional Labeling, enteric coated aspirin products are erratically absorbed from the GI tract. Some studies have found that patients may not get the full effect of aspirin from a dose. This is an important consideration for patients who are trying to prevent another heart attack or clot-related stroke. A novel delivery system for aspirin There is a unique over-the-counter aspirin recently approved by the FDA available on shelves nationally Vazalore®. Vazalore is a liquid-filled aspirin capsule, available in 81 mg and 325 mg doses, which delivers aspirin differently from plain and enteric coated aspirin products. The special complex inside the Vazalore capsule and its delivery system allows for pH dependent targeted release of aspirin, limiting its direct contact with the stomach. Vazalore delivers fast, reliable absorption for pain relief plus the life-saving benefits of aspirin to help prevent another heart attack or clot-related stroke. Continued from page 51. Neuroscience Institute, said the establishment of a neuroscience institute is a seminal moment for the network. “This is something many other health systems in the country can only dream about. But here in the Lehigh Valley, special things are happening in health care because of the bold vision of LVHN leaders and amazing benefactors such as the Fleming Foundation.” The Zionsville-based Fleming Foundation was founded in 1990 by Fleming, a World War II veteran and chemical engineer who rose to prominence at companies such as Air Products and GAF Corp. He died in 2015. The foundation, now led by Fleming’s daughter, Trinka Arnold, has a long history of supporting health-related and community initiatives throughout the region.
Fleming and his wife, Peggy, were longtime champions of the department of nursing at LVHN, launching the Friends of Nursing program in 1984 to support nursing education and research. In 2001, they established the Peggy Fleming Endowed Chair in Nursing. The Fleming Memory Center at LVHN was established in 2015 in honor of Peggy Fleming and her battle with Alzheimer’s disease. She died in 2008. “This gift to launch Lehigh Valley Fleming Neuroscience Institute embodies all my parents believed in when it came to health care, its role in the community and improving people’s quality of life,” said Arnold. “The future for neurology and neurosurgery at LVHN is bright and having the Fleming name associated with that is exciting and an opportunity we cherish.”
