Committee President Ron Semon said the event was set up to be family oriented and be a little different than the average car show. “Our goal was to have a little something for everyone, even if you are not a car person”. Spectators are invited to bring their chairs to sit and watch the 30 minute cruise through the village, then move to the Pardeesville playground where they can sit, relax and listen to the band, have something to eat and enjoy the evening festivities. All proceeds will be split between two local agencies, The American Cancer Society of Hazleton and Northeast Counseling Services of Hazleton for their Suicide Awareness / Prevention Program. Both agencies will have representatives on hand the day of the event to explain what they offer to the community. Pre-registration for the show is $18 and available up to August 6th, which is highly recommended due to space inside the park. After August 6th, registration will be $20. All vehicles must have a current state inspection, registration & insurance to participate in the cruise. A $3.00 donation will be collected at the gate for spectators. Kids 15 and under are free. Dash plaques & goodie bags will be given to the first 100 registered vehicles. Registration & vehicle staging will be from 2:00-4:30. Sunday, September 4th from 11 AM to 4 PM, the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford will be celebrating Labor Day Weekend with a picnic featuring homemade ethnic foods, coal mine and museum tours, a Basket Raffle, and music. Parking, admission to the grounds, and music are all free to the public. A nominal fee is charged only for the coal mine tour and food at the picnic. This is a great value for families and those looking for a fun day out that won’t break the bank. At this year’s picnic the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum will be hosting a Basket Raffle featuring donated items from businesses throughout the coal region. The proceeds from the Basket Raffle benefit the Panther Creek Valley

Visitors can also tour the historic No. 9 Mine, which first opened in 1855, and experience what it was like to work in an underground Anthracite coal mine. Visitors ride 1600’ into the mountain and then begin a fascinating guided walking tour of the oldest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine in the world. Tourists will see many of the unique features of the mine including the original 700’ deep elevator shaft, explore the mule-way, and see a miner’s hospital cut from solid rock. On the surface, visitors can browse the vast exhibits housed inside the Wash Shanty Museum, home to one of the largest collections of

Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori Princess Diana Collectibles By Dr. Lori Verderame Over the course of her short life, Princess Diana (nee Diana Spencer, 19611997) inspired the production and manufacture of many works of art, antiques, souvenirs, and collectibles from the time of her highly publicized engagement to HRH Prince Charles to her shocking death. While she is best known for her philanthropic and charity work during her time as Princess of Wales when she was the wife of HRH Prince Charles of Great Britain, Princess Diana prompted the making of many items based on her likeness and her informed good taste. In 1975, Lady Diana Spencer accepted her title when her father inherited his title as Earl Spencer. On July 29, 1981, after a courtship that began in 1977, Lady Diana Spencer married HRH Prince Charles of Great Britain married. Prince Charles was 13 years Diana’s senior. She was one of the most beloved members of the British royal family and was known widely as the “People’s Princess.” The royal couple had two sons, Prince William (William Arthur Philip Louis), heir to the throne who was born in June of 1982, and Prince Harry (Henry Charles Albert David) who was born
in September of 1984. After much turmoil both privately and in the public eye, the royal couple divorced in 1996. On August 31, 1997, Princess Diana, aged 36, died from her injuries following an automobile crash in Paris, France. Princess Diana was known for her fashion sense and jewelry, interest in popular culture, humanitarian work, and various collections. Her clothes have been featured in charity auctions and her jewelry is part of the collection of the crown jewels. She had a flair for both the fun and the fashionable. Princess Diana’s spectacular engagement ring is an 18-karat white gold ring featuring a 12-carat oval Ceylon blue sapphire surrounded by 14 solitaire diamonds hand-made by British crown jeweler, Garrard. The ring was inspired by a brooch given to Queen Victoria from Prince Albert for their wedding in 1840. Princess Diana’s high-end keepsakes characterized 1980s style. A few years ago, I had the good fortune to lecture with a high-ranking member of Princess Diana’s staff, Patrick Jephson, her Chief of Staff. Mr. Jephson was privy to much classified information about the Princess which
he did not reveal and was a kind colleague and fascinating gentleman. As we became friends, I asked him to tell me something about Princess Diana as a collector. He offered that she enjoyed collecting hand-painted Continued on page 22 WE SPECIALIZE IN ORTHOPEDIC & DIABETIC FOOTWEAR

It's All About The Fit At Gino's Shoes Choosing the right pair of shoes to wear on a regular basis can help ensure the long-term health of your feet, as well as your entire body. The best fit for you depends on your daily use, but nothing is more important than comfort. Not only do ill-fitting shoes make you uncomfortable all day, but they can also cause foot pain or aggravate preexisting conditions. While comfort is the priority when you’re looking for new shoes, there are a few other things to consider as well: • Not too small, not too big – Shoes that are too big or too small can cause unwanted rubbing and blisters. Find a shoe that gives your toes room to wiggle, but does not allow your foot to slide around. • Don’t fixate on size – Just because you’re a size 9 in one brand, doesn’t mean every shoe brand will fit the same. Shoe sizes can vary among manufacturers, which is why it’s important to try on every new pair of shoes and make sure they fit well. • Wear the right socks – If you are buying running shoes, wear the kind of sock you would use running when you try the shoes on. That way, you’ll get a better idea of how it will fit during the activity you are buying them for. • Don’t worry about breaking shoes in - If a shoe isn’t comfortable to begin with, it’s never going to be. Proper shoe fit is particularly important if you are diabetic since improper shoe

Like any mother of active young boys, she kept the delicate figurines out of reach yet on display in her private office within the living quarters of her Kensington Palace home. This year, we mark the 25th anniversary of the Princess’ untimely death, many collectors will be bringing objects associated with Princess Diana to market. Collectibles relating to Princess Diana have continued to be among the most coveted items in the realm of royal collecting. Objects run the gamut such as Princess Diana paper dolls, costume jewelry tiaras based on the Spencer tiara, Wedgwood jasperware trinket boxes, porcelain dolls and figurines in her likeness, souvenir Charles and Diana engagement mugs, photographs of Princess Diana dancing with actor John Travolta, autographed biographical books, Ty Inc. beanie babies (Princess), royal wedding invitations, tickets to the 2007 Diana
charity concert, postage stamps, commemorative coins, etc. These pieces will enjoy a spike in interest and value during the summer of 2022 leading up to the anniversary date of her death. Values for Princess Diana collectibles expect to increase as much as 10% to 25% during this time with collectors actively seeking to add to their collections. Online buyers and sellers will be ready to remember the People’s Princess by exchanging objects relating to this royal figure dating back to the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s. Flea Prevention by Dr. Kenneth Trippett, West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital While most flea problem start in the summer, these problems don't get bad until September or October. Fleas are little heat seekers. As it starts getting cold outside, they will hop on the first warm body that goes by (including us humans)and ride on into the house. Once in the house, they live both on and off your pets. It is usually necessary to treat the house once you a serious flea problem. With the myraid of flea preventative products out there, it can be very confusing as to what you should use. My favorite product this year is the Parastar Plus for dogs and Easy Spot for cats. My biggest problem in continuing to recommend Frontline is the large amount of counterfeit product out there. The only flea collar that actually works is Seresto. For those of you who prefer not to put something on the outside of your pet, there are several oral flea preventatives available. Nexgard and Bravecto are fairly safe and seem to work well for dogs. My favorite is Bravecto due to the 12 week duration for dogs (the other two only last 4 weeks). Comfortis is the only one that can

A Broken Record... Where's My Refund? By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc. Since 2020 this has been a Never Ending Song for tax payers! The IRS as of May 31, 2022 was still 21 million documents behind! They did not finish processing the 2020 tax season until May 31 2022! During the 2021 filing season MANY people had IDENTITY THEFT occur in their tax filing due to the “Free Money” that was on the table from the IRS. Those people all had to register for ID Theft with the IRS, Paper file returns, as someone had falsely filed an electronic return in their name/number and the IRS must wade through all the flood waters of finding who is real and processing and refunding the real returns, plus issuing ID Theft Numbers for all those tax payers! Many of those VICTIMS have received notice back from the IRS that it will take up to 350 days for the IRS to process the ID Theft situation. Onto regular tax payers who are still waiting for their refunds that did not have ID Theft. They are checking the Where’s My Refund site to get a message that says “We are processing”. Unfortunately, there is nothing you can do when you see this message except WAIT. Another addition to the muddle of the refunds is that the IRS recently started allowing 1040X Amended returns to be electronically sent instead of paper mailed. However, we have seen issues in their software! The 1040X is not always processed correctly and/or if there is more than one
1040X, the IRS does not process the first one? And don’t forget, all these stimulus and child tax payments that had to be “reconciled” that if what you reported did not match what they sent you is delaying the processing of your refund. And of course, due to COVID, retirement, etc., the IRS is short staffed and backed up since 2020 (trailers of mail to go through!).

Christy Mathewson
One of the all-time great pitchers in Major League history, Christy Mathewson was born in Factoryville, PA on August 12, 1880 and died at the age of 45 on October 7, 1925 in Lake Saranac, New York. Mathewson, who was the son of a wealthy farmer, established countless records in his Major League career. He is tied with Grover Cleveland Alexander for most wins in the National League history with 373. He went 373-188 in 635 games of which he started 551. He hurled 4,780 and 2/3 innings, striking out 2,502 batters and walking 844. He led the National League in strikeouts and ERA 5 times each. Mathewson also led the National League in wins and shutouts 4 times each. He is the only pitcher in the history of baseball to throw 3 shutouts in a World Series. He led the Giants to a World Series victory over Connie Mack’s

Athletics in 1905. In the first game of the Series, Mathewson defeated fellow Hall of Famer Eddie Plank 3-0, Mathewson and Plank were rare college men in baseball. Mathewson went to Bucknell and Plank to Gettysburg. Christy Mathewson played high school ball at Keystone Academy from 1895 through 1897. He also played on adult teams for Factoryville. Mathewson actually began playing baseball at age 13. When he attended Bucknell, Mathewson played baseball, basketball and football. He was selected to the Walter Camp All American 1900 football team as a drop-kicker. Christy Mathewson pitched for Bucknell and was a pretty good hitter as well. He actually batted .215 for his Major League career with 362 hits, one less than Warren Spahn. Mathewson began his Minor League career at Taunton, Massachusetts and later played at Norfolk in the Virginia League. The Giants purchased Mathewson from Norfolk for $2,000. He went 0-3 with an ERA over 5 and the Giants sent him back to Norfolk. Later Cincinnati drafted him but traded him back to the Giants for a washed up Hall of Fame fireballer Amos Rusie who did not win another game while Mathewson won 373! In his first two full seasons with the Giants, Mathewson went 20-17 in 1901 and 14-17 in 1902 but with good ERAs. Then for 12 consecutive years Mathewson won at least 22 games each year and 30 or more 4 times. He holds the record for the National League with 37 in 1908. Mathewson had 80 career shutouts and a career ERA of 2.13. Connie Mack who managed longer than anyone felt that Mathewson was the best pitcher he ever saw. John McGraw managed Mathewson throughout almost his entire career. McGraw, who was a brilliant manager,

perhaps the best ever, was viewed as a very tough man while Mathewson was a very cultured person and called the “Christian Gentleman” yet the two got along famously and remained great friends after Mathewson retired. McGraw had Bill Boyd (Hopalong Cassidy) as his drinking buddy, while Mathewson did not drink at all. Another name for Mathewson was “The Gentleman Hurler”. Ballplayers of Mathewson’s era were generally regarded as hard drinking men who were frequently womanizers. Christy Mathewson did a great deal to improve the image of Major League players. During his playing days, Mathewson and his family lived in Upper Manhattan next to John McGraw and his family. Mathewson was a devoted Christian who would not play on Sundays. Christy Mathewson was traded by the Giants in 1916 to Cincinnati so that he could manage the Reds, which he did until

part way through the 1918 season when he enlisted in the Army though he did not have to do so. He served as a Captain and was exposed to poison gas. Some writers feel that this weakened his immune system and led to tuberculosis which eventually claimed his life. Others feel that influenza which he experienced in France ultimately led to tuberculosis. After the war, Mathewson moved to Lake Saranac, New York which was supposed to have a very healthy climate, and Mathewson was treated by a specialist. He later returned as a Giant coach for two years. In 1923 he accepted the role of Team President of the Giants. In 1925, he collapsed and had to return to Lake Saranac where he died on October 7, 1925. The death of Mathewson at age 45 was a tremendous shock to the nation. John McGraw was among many heartbroken people. Mathewson, probably, was the country’s first big sports hero, an honor that he shared with boxer John L.Sullivan who was not a role model as was Mathewson. Christy Mathewson was also an author. He wrote not only about baseball, but also co-authored a play and composed a childrens’ book. Mathewson proved himself a fine writer and may have had a career in this field had he lived a longer life. The impact of Mathewson’s death was similar to the plane crash that killed rock stars Buddy Holly, Richie Valens and The Big Bopper. Their deaths were commemorated in the records Three Stars and the Don McLean classic American Pie, a monster hit. The plane crash was referred to by Don McLean as “the day the music died”. Tragedy marked the Mathewson family. Henry Mathewson, Christy’s younger brother pitched a total of 11 innings for the Giants in 1906 and 1907 and had a career record of 0-1. Henry Mathewson died July 1, 2017 of tuberculosis. Another brother

committed suicide. Christy Mathewson Jr. was a skilled pilot but lost his wife of two weeks in a plane crash in a plane that he piloted. He himself was severely injured. Mathewson recovered and went on to have a successful career in aviation but died in a home explosion at age 44. Christy Mathewson was my Dad’s favorite pitcher, and he named his dog, a large black German Shepherd after him. The dog was extremely skilled in catching sponge balls and was used to entertain people at public events such as sporting ones. As one would expect, original cards of Mathewson are very expensive. I recently saw one on Ebay that was a high grade gold border 1901 for over $440,000. Retro and reprint cards are about the only affordable ones. Cards of Mathewson that are nice and affordable appear in the 1960 and 1961 Fleer sets of deceased and retired players. They cost only $10 to $15. I especially like the 1961 card. In my opinion, two of the best five Major League pitchers from 1900 to 1950 hailed from Northeastern PA. Christy Mathewson from Factoryville and Ed Walsh from Plains. Ed Walsh has THE BEST ERA in the history of baseball of anyone who pitched 1,000 innings or more at 1.82 and was the last pitcher to win 40 games in a season. Walsh also holds the modern record for innings

Real Flavor Usually sold within 24 hours of being harvested, fruits and vegetables produced locally are fresher and taste better than produce which has been shipped for a long period of time. Statistics show that produce purchased in supermarkets may have been shipped from distant states and countries traveling an average of 1,300 miles for as many as 7 to 14 days. When eaten at the height of ripeness, one reaps the benefits of the exceptional flavor and nutrients of the produce. At the farmers market you find an amazing array of produce that you don’t see in your average supermarket. More Nutrition Generally speaking, produce that is fresh and local is nutritionally superior to the fruits and veggies in many grocery stores. Many factors affect the nutrient quality of these foods,

Panorama Community Magazine such as when the crop was harvested, how it was grown, how it was handled and processed, and how long it's been sitting on the supermarket shelf. All of these factors can decrease nutrient quality. Farm-fresh food goes through fewer nutrient-diminishing steps and gets from the earth to your table sooner. This means it is probably richer in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals (thanks to less transport, processing and storage time). As a general rule of thumb if you are not sure what to eat, Just eat a rainbow of color. Enjoy The Seasons Let you taste buds lead you through the seasons. From hot summer days through those cool early fall months, farmers markets are in full swing, yielding a bounty of beautiful, fresh, local produce. As you look forward to berries in spring, sweet corn in summer, or pumpkins in autumn, you can enjoy the incredible views, fresh air and the awesome flavor each unique season offers. Meet The Farmer When you’re at the market, you can pick up some produce and talk to the farmer. The same people who grow the food are usually present to sell their crops at the market, and they have a wealth of knowledge to share. They can tell you how it was grown, how much longer it will be available this season, how to grow the same fruits or vegetables in your garden, and how to store and prepare the food that you buy. All you have to do is ask. You can’t afford not to take advantage of one-on-one contact with local farmers. Unexpected Spaces Surprising Home Upgrade Ideas (Family Features) Not all great things come in big packages, and home upgrades are an example of the truth in this wisdom. Unexpected, smaller spaces may not get the same attention as hightraffic areas like kitchens, bathrooms and living areas, but their impact can be just as powerful. Get inspired to make improvements to the lesser-used areas of your home with these tips from the home decorating experts at Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.: Entryway - It’s the impression that welcomes guests into your home, so even if the space is small, your entryway warrants some TLC. Focus on making it open and inviting by removing any unnecessary furnishings. Some functional storage, like a bench with integrated coat hooks, can serve a practical purpose, and if you have the space, some built-in cabinetry with an eye-catching countertop can incorporate stylish storage. Laundry Room - Getting motivated to do chores like laundry is easy when you have a beautiful setting for getting to work. Introducing pops of color in nontraditional places, like the cabinetry, adds a highend elegance. Water-inspired and earthy hues like Midtown Matte Tidewater or Arcadia Chiffon Cypress are perfect for
the laundry space. Both are options in Wellborn Cabinet, Inc.’s Aspire Series, which features concealed hinges with self-close functionality and matching interiors for a high-class look, even when the doors are open for business. Closet - A cluttered closet may not be the first thing a guest notices, but it’s a space you visit daily. Improving the organizational features can streamline your morning routine and put you in a more positive frame of mind to start each day. There’s no right or wrong when it comes to closet design, but using cabinetry in place of open shelving and rods lends a more luxurious feel. Plan for adequate hanging and closed storage, and if space allows, be sure to plan for shoes and accessories since these items can easily contribute to a closet’s disarray. Mini Bar - If you fear you don’t have room for a mini bar, you may be surprised. Reimagining a larder cabinet, like the ones Wellborn Cabinet, Inc. offers in 30-, 33-, 36- and 42-inch widths, can create an instant bar out of just about any wall space where you can fit a cabinet. Install it as a coffee bar or traditional bar, or add the optional Appliance Pullout shelf for more versatility. Continued on next page

Continued from previous page Pantry - Guests may not find themselves in your pantry very often, but you likely use this space every day. Transform your pantry for heightened utility in simple ways like using clear plastic bins for small boxed foods or stylish wicker baskets to hide away snacks. For a more permanent solution, take advantage of unused space on the back of the pantry door with thin shelves for items like seasoning packets and smaller canned goods. Guest Bathroom - Swapping out a tired vanity and countertop is a relatively affordable upgrade that can completely change the style of a secondary bathroom. Be sure to also update the fixtures for a more contemporary look and, if budget allows, replace the flooring. Finish the project with a fresh coat of paint in a light, airy shade and add new textiles and a few decorative touches to complete the job. Find more ideas for updating unexpected spaces in your home at Wellborn.com. Hideaway Storage Spaces - One feature that enhances virtually any space is more storage. Having convenient places to tuck away all your stuff makes rooms feel more open and inviting. Hidden storage solutions are often better because you can enjoy the functionality they add to the space without interrupting your design aesthetic.
Here are some clever ideas for keeping necessary items tucked out of sight but within easy reach: Built-in Step Stool: If you love the look of tall cabinets but struggle to reach the top shelves, a practical addition is a hidden step ladder in a pullout caddy. Specially designed ladders that fold down extra narrow and feature nonslip rubber treads make this a handy addition you’ll reach for again and again. Paper Towel Pullout: Keep paper towels hidden but close by hiding them in a pullout cabinet such as Wellborn Cabinet Inc.’s 12-inch-wide model, which features a built-in paper towel holder and bottom shelf ideal for organizing cleaning products. There’s also a space behind the paper towels that’s perfect for storing sponges and other kitchen supplies. Drawer Dividers: While you can find many after-market options to organize the insides of your drawers and cabinets, choosing organizers designed to work seamlessly with your cabinetry creates a more polished look (and saves the headaches of measuring and guesstimating the fit). Tray dividers are useful for sorting cookie sheets and baking pans, while you can find dividers in a variety of heights to match drawers below the oven or where you store your cutlery. Another option that serves a similar purpose is pegs, which keep fragile items from shifting when drawers are opened or closed.

Innovation, Technology And Safety In The Trucking Industry by Thomas R. Buff As motorists we are all aware of the new technology that has made our vehicles safer and more efficient, not to mention the luxuries we now enjoy. But the bottom line is keeping our roads safe. Trucks are everywhere, big ones and small ones, transporting the commodities that we use every day. As of 2022, there are an estimated 20.5 million trucks operating on today’s roads in the United States alone. Over 7 million are tractor trailers that weigh an average of 80,000 pounds or more. The transportation industry has been manufacturing trucks and trailers that incorporate the same type of technology to prevent truck related crashes and keep our roads safer. According to research conducted by the AAA foundation for safety, equipping large trucks with advanced safety technologies can prevent 77,000 truck related crashes, 23,275 injuries and the loss of 500 lives per year. The foundation examined all aspects
of truck safety through a study called “Leveraging Large Truck Technology and Engineering to Realize Safety Gains”. The study concluded that the benefits of installing advanced safety technologies in existing new large trucks will save many lives. In 2021, large trucks accounted for over 400,000 crashes that injured 116,000 and killed 4000 people. Although the trucking industry has changed, it seems the focus remains on emissions and cleaner burning fuels than major safety factors. One of the major objectives of the study was to educate motorists about the new technology that the trucking industry is now implementing as to ease the minds of the motoring public when traveling on the highways. The truck market in North America has implemented over 918,000 truck safety systems up to the year 2021. These technologies include: Large truck lane departure

warning and blind spot detection systems that alert the driver if a vehicle is in a blind spot. Research shows that this system can prevent up to 7,000 crashes, 1,342 injuries and 115 fatalities each year. Automatic emergency braking and collision avoidance systems that will slow down and/or stop the truck if a collision is imminent and the driver does not react quickly. Panorama Community Magazine Continued from previous page the drivers eyes of the road. Many large truck fleets are currently using this technology and have reported a large decrease in driver distracted type accidents. Air disc brakes have been used on many trucks but are now becoming more popular due to the fact that they reduce stooping distance by up to 30 percent. Brake fade is also decreased making for safer stopping on steep declines. Advanced engine braking systems have made it easier to slow down on those steep declines thus promoting safer roads for all motorists. Beginning in Dec of 2017 all large trucks that were over model year 2000 and travel within a 100-mile distance began to us required Electronic Logging Devices. The rule was put into effect to reduce the hours of service violations by making it very difficult for drivers to fake their on time – off time driving. Studies show that the ELDs have since assisted in reducing crashes caused by fatigued drivers. It is evident that are roads are becoming safer due to the technology in today’s automobiles. As the trucking industry continues to implements advanced safety features we can become increasingly confident that the 80,000-pound truck rolling down the highway next to us is equipped with effective technologies to keep us safer on the road. Happy Motoring!
How Americans Map Out Summer Trips
(BPT) - Summer is traditionally a hot time for ... well, everything. And from temperatures to travel plans, 2022 is proving no different. Air travel is making headlines due to rising prices and grounded routes. Along with the lingering effects of the pandemic and rising prices, consumers are paying close attention to how they travel. Now, new data from Hankook Tire shows 60% of Americans expect to take a road trip by the end of summer, although how and where they are going is shifting gears. Here are 5 things to expect from travel this summer: 1. Attitudes toward travel signal an emotional lane change. As the last two years had Americans feeling a bit nervous about travel, Hankook found that most (79%) are excited or hopeful about their next summer vacation or trip. Another 1 in 10 (11%) are determined to make it happen. While some remain apprehensive about travel, according to Deloitte, that now has more to do with the cost of travel rather than lingering safety concerns. 2. Most travelers will get behind the wheel. With concerns about air travel rising, more Americans are hitting the road. For those who plan to travel this summer, most will pack their trunks: 71% say they will travel by car as their next vacation's primary mode of transportation. In general, this is due to overall preference for automotive travel (42%) or seeking added flexibility (40%). And while last summer, safety was the number two reason most travelers chose to go by car, this summer, it's slipped to fifth on the list,
behind preference and cost. 3. For those who are weary, gas prices play a part. Though prices are leveling out in some parts of the country, the cost of gas remains top-of-mind for many drivers this summer. Most (78%) say the cost of gas currently has a major to moderate impact on daily driving habits - including travel. So while those who are willing to travel may be considering a road trip, they may stick to their planned routes, rather than detour for the fun of it to save on gas. Pro tip: checking traffic conditions before heading out can also be a small way to save on gas mileage, helping potentially avoid any bumper-to-bumper conditions. Also, be mindful of how much you pack, as heavier loads will take their toll on mileage efficiency. 4. Still, many will go the distance. Despite worries over gas prices, a renewed appetite to return to travel has over one-third of travelers mapping out longer routes. Of the half of Americans who have already taken a vacation this year, Hankook found that 35% traveled long distances. 5. With travel recovery, comes busy roads. Without question, optimism around travel plans signals a positive sign for many businesses and cities hoping to make up for lost time the last two years, even amid inflation's impact. But for those planning to hit the road, it can also mean a traffic nightmare. According to the U.S. Travel Association, Fridays throughout June, July and August are some of the busiest travel days of the year (sometimes beating even major holidays!) So for those among the 13% of drivers who told Hankook they find their time spent driving can be a stressful experience, be sure to plan ahead and avoid the rush - and "pack your patience!"

Celebrate Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month in August Did you know? • Vision disorders can negatively impact a babies’ ability to bond with their parent/caregiver, their ability to explore the world by reaching and grasping, and also impede development of fine and gross motor skills. • One in every 4 school-age children and 1 in every 17 preschool-aged children have some form of vision problem requiring treatment. • 24% of teens with correctable vision have the wrong prescription and this rises to about 33% for Mexican-American and African-American teens. • 80% of all blindness and vision impairment is either preventable or treatable. Across the country, as children and parents are gearing up for the back to school, remember that healthy vision is critical to academic and social success. As a child grows, an untreated eye disease or condition becomes more difficult to correct. These can worsen and lead to other serious problems as well as affect reading ability, focus, classroom behavior, and social adjustment in school. Vision problems that can affect children include amblyopia, (“lazy eye”), strabismus, (“crossed eyes”), and the most common forms of refractive error: myopia (nearsightedness) and hyperopia (farsightedness) and astigmatism. When is the Right Time to Move to Memory Care? By Rachael Timm, Marketing Director of Heritage Hill Senior Community The right time to transition to memory care is now. Why now? Why not? Once a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s or a dementiarelated illness is given, it’s time to begin having conversations about memory care. With an early diagnosis, your family can discuss with Mom or Dad their future care needs. Making them a part of the decisionmaking process also allows them to feel in control while maintaining their dignity through these anxious and uncertain times. Also, in its early stages, your loved one is primarily independent and can manage their care from the comfort of home. As the disease progresses, so do symptoms of cognitive decline. It can become challenging to provide the care Mom and Dad deserve from in-home services alone. Deciding the best memory care community for your loved one is a tough decision. An even harder choice— knowing when is the right time to make a move to memory care.
If you or your family members are conflicted by “when,” here are some telltale signs to consider: Their safety is a concern. Even early on, dementia can cause Mom or Dad to feel confused or disoriented. These symptoms can make them prone to wandering or vulnerable to falls and other mishaps at home. A decline in overall health. How does your loved one look? Is their medicine taken correctly? Do they remember to eat, or is spoiled food left in the fridge or cabinets? Or are you struggling to get them to consent to activities of daily living like eating, bathing, dressing, and toileting? No social life. For some family caregivers who maintain two households, there is little time for daily, purposeful activities and socialization, which puts your loved one at an increased risk of depression. You are exhausted. Caregiving is

Nutrition to Nourish Your Body Carbohydrate Edition b y Dr. Candice Dutko, DNP
In follow-up to the article I wrote last month on protein, this month, let’s talk carbs! (If you missed last month’s article, you can find it in the Blog section of my website). Unfortunately, carbs have acquired a negative connotation due to those that feel strongly towards a no-carb and/or low-carbohydrate nutritional approach. Truth being, there is no one best nutritional approach and I am not suggesting one approach over the other. Truly, the best nutritional approach is the one that is most sustainable to help one achieve their goals. Carbohydrates (carbs) benefit us in that they are a great source of energy. However, it is important to balance our carbohydrate intake with our activity levels. If one is not very active, their carbohydrate requirements are likely lower compared to someone who is more active and exercises regularly. Whereas last month I mentioned how many people are challenged with eating enough protein, that is generally not the same problem with carbs. While I have met people who are not eating enough carbs to support their goals, I have observed many others that are eating more carbs than their current activity level requires. It should be noted that not all carbs are created equal. I encouraged readers to refer to a Precision Nutrition Infographic on my website (under Blogs & Resources) last month regarding protein…and I encourage readers this month to review recommended carb sources on that same infographic. As

with anything, there are foods we would benefit from “eating more” of, “eating some” of, and “eating less” of. Whereas the quantity of carbs is a strong influence on your overall weight…the quality of carbs is a strong influence on your overall health. In other words, consuming pop tarts regularly is going to yield a different body than one nourished by fruits and vegetables. Please note, this is not to say you never eat a pop tart…but they should make up a very small part of what you regularly eat (i.e. “eat less”). Choosing carbs that are rich in fiber will help support feelings of satiety, or fullness. (Last month, we also discussed how adequate protein helps us feel the same). Someone who chooses carbs from the “eat more” such as beans, fresh or frozen fruit, or potatoes (white or sweet), are going to feel fuller longer versus those who eat from the “eat less” category. These slowerdigesting carbs also help promote more
stable blood sugar management. On the other hand, faster-digesting carbs (juices, soft drinks, cookies, cakes, muffins, i.e. “eat less” foods) will not help promote feelings of fullness and get a person started on an eating roller coaster throughout the day as they chase highs and lows with their blood sugar. In addition, carbs (primarily those from the “eat more” category) are also a source of vitamins and minerals to support our body’s internal processes and overall health. A general good rule of thumb is to choose your carbs from the outskirts of the supermarket. Generally speaking, the least nourishing foods are those found in the interior aisles. For example, an apple you buy from the produce section has 5 grams of fiber and is a natural source of calcium, iron, potassium, vitamin A, and vitamin C. On the other hand, a serving of applesauce Continued on next page

Learn From Solomon by John Degenhart, DC I’m going to be transparent and be vulnerable in this article to show you my passion for this article. When I was 18 and a freshman in college, I was worried my grades wouldn’t be good enough. So I heard if you read three chapters in the Bible every night, you can read the entire word of God in one year. So that is what I did, and it gave me great inner strength as I formulated my plans for my future. When I first read about Solomon, I was so impressed with his life that I got on my knees and asked God to give me wisdom for my future. God was so impressed with Solomon’s request, that he did not seek money or power, that God blessed Solomon with it all; wisdom, wealth, and power as long as he didn’t marry women who worshiped pagan gods and he didn’t honor those idols. So although I was impressed with the younger life of Solomon, I later learned about the later life of Solomon. He had 300 wives and 700 mistresses. And he gave into their constant demands, and he built altars to their pagan gods. He did just what God warned him not to do. He blew it! So God took away all his blessings and his family ended up in ruin. So if Solomon, who had more wisdom and wealth than Elon Musk and Jack Besos combined was unable to fight the temptations of this world, what chances do you and I have to run the narrow path in life that runs to heaven? The only chance is to surround ourselves with godly people who are transformed by the word of God and not conformed to the world. God wants you and I to use our talents to be successful in life. But not at the expense of losing your soul. Work hard, seek wisdom, but all through life, especially as you grow older, don’t lose sight of heaven like so many wealthy, popular movie stars who blow it. No riches on Earth for 80 years can compare to God’s love for eternity!

Continued from previous page contains 1 gram of fiber, does have some potassium and calcium (often added in during processing), but does not contain iron or vitamin A. Not to mention, because the applesauce requires far less chewing than an actual apple, you are also likely not going to feel the same satisfaction from eating it that you would from eating a nice, crunchy apple. It is possible to eat too much of a good thing. Even if you ate carbs only from the “eat more” list, you could still be eating beyond what your body requires. That is why it is essential to eat according to your body’s activity demands. Someone who sits at a desk 8 hours a day then goes home to sit on the couch and watch TV needs far less carbs than one who gets 10,000 steps a day and exercises 3-5 days per week. Just as we discussed preparing protein in bulk to help us accomplish our goals, we can certainly prepare carbs that are healthier for us in bulk as well. For example, you can wash your apples as soon as you bring them home from the store…this way, all you have to do is grab the apple from the fridge when you are ready and just enjoy! Or, one of my favorites is to cut up some baby potatoes or some sweet potatoes and roast them up and then portion them out to enjoy with various meals throughout the week. One of my go-to snacks are baby carrots and I like to even put them in some to-go containers or baggies ahead of time so that I always have a healthy snack ready and available. Ultimately, anything you can do to help make healthier choices easier will help you in the long run! In closing, the way we nourish our body says a lot about how much we love our body. I encourage you to do more for yourself (and for others) coming from a place of love. Making the effort to move our bodies purposefully is an act of love towards our body. Making the conscious choice to nourish our bodies well is also an act of love towards our body. Furthermore, these acts of love towards our bodies also demonstrate our love to the important people in our lives as we will be able to enjoy a more fulfilling and vibrant life with them when we strive to be the healthiest version of ourselves. Radiation Therapy Treatment for Skin Cancer by the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton Summer is in full swing. The sun is shining, the weather is warmer, and people are spending more time outside. While all the fun in the sun activities are a good time, they are also exposing you to ultraviolet radiation from the sun, which puts you at risk of getting skin cancer. Skin cancer occurs when there are abnormalities in the cells that make up the skin. There are two main types of malignant cancers, basal cell carcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Basal cell carcinoma is a slow-growing cancer found in the base of the epidermis that accounts for about 90% of all skin cancers. It seldom spreads, but if left untreated can invade bone and other tissues under the skin. Squamous cell carcinoma is found on the surface of the skin. It can be more aggressive, can grow deep below the skin, and spread to distant areas of the body. A third type of skin cancer, called melanoma, begins in the cells that produce pigment in the skin. This type is less common, but more serious. However, if caught early, there is a nearly 97% chance for cure. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation, the only international organization devoted solely to education, prevention, early detection, and prompt treatment of the world’s most common cancer, one in five Americans will develop skin cancer by age 70. If a tumor is very large or is on an area

of the skin that makes it hard to remove with surgery, radiation therapy may be used as the main treatment. Radiation can also be useful for some patients who are not good candidates for surgery. It can often cure small basal or squamous cell skin cancers and can delay the growth of more advanced cancers. Radiation is also useful when combined with other treatments. For example, radiation can be used after surgery as an additional treatment to kill any small areas of remaining cancer cells that may not have been visible during surgery, lowering the risk of cancer coming back after surgery. It may also be used to help treat skin cancer that has spread to lymph nodes or other organs. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is used in the treatment of skin cancer. EBRT is a painless and non-invasive treatment for skin cancer, damaging cancer cells and their ability to
multiply. During treatment, high-energy X-rays are delivered to the cancer cells with a linear accelerator (LINAC). Radiation is very damaging to the cancer cells, but is well tolerated by the surrounding normal cells. Also, radiation penetrates only a very short distance into the skin, so that internal organs can be completely spared from its effects. Patients treated with external beam radiation therapy receive a certain number of daily radiation treatments usually over four to five weeks. Treatments are outpatient and usually take about 15 minutes. Side effects are generally minimal, and most patients return to routine activities immediately after each treatment. To find out more about radiation therapy, or to see if you are a candidate for external beam radiation therapy, please contact the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton at (570) 459-3460 or visit www. The 3 Best Things To Do For Your Knee Pain
by Ting Oh, Physical Therapist at Fyzical Therapy & Balance Centers
Are you not enjoying summer because your knee hurts? Have you tried ice, heat or medications but not getting any relief? Let me tell you the 3 things you can do to help manage knee pain. It’s what I do for my knees. First you want to make sure there is no structural damage to your knee like a torn ligament of meniscus because if something is torn, you want to get professional help to make sure you are not going to do anything that may make you worse. Also if your pain is at the point where you are having a tough time putting weight on it, get it checked out. At FYZICAL Hazleton, we have diagnostic tools like ultrasound imaging that can look into your knee and help identify what could be wrong. So for those with knee pain, the first thing you should do is some self massage. The best areas to work on are the thigh muscles (front, back and sides) and the calf muscles. When tight, they can put strain on the knee and cause muscle imbalances resulting in pain. My go to tool for self massage is the hypervolt handheld massager. They have different heads and speeds so you can adjust depending on how much pain you have. I spend around 1 minute on each tight area before I do my exercises. The second thing to do is to get some support. Support like kinesiology taping or a knee sleeve provides feedback to your joint and muscles, allowing them to work better offering better stability. When I work out or do anything physical I use kinesiology taping and a knee sleeve on top. The knee sleeve I use is an Incrediwear sleeve which has ions infused in them which helps with healing. They are also sturdy which I find comforting.
The third thing to do is do some exercises for the muscles that support the knee. Aside from knee stretches like the hamstring and strengthening of the quadriceps, the core, hip and calf muscles are very important. Research has shown core/hip weakness and calf tightness can cause knee pain. A couple of good exercises include bridges, hip abduction, planks and calf stretches. Aim to do them regularly along with knee exercises. Doing these 3 things regularly can help keep knee pain at bay and I do them regularly as I have had 2 knee surgeries previously. If you are interested in getting some of the tools I use, feel free to contact us at FYICAL Hazleton, as we have them for sale. For more information on how to take care of knee pain, or if you would like to set up an appointment to have your knee checked out, please give us a call on 570-501-1808, before the nice weather is gone. Also check out our Youtube page FYZICAL Hazleton for instructional videos on knee pain.

Monkey Pox by Stephen Schleicher, MD Something a bit scary happened this spring; cases of monkeypox were confirmed in both the United States (first in Boston and New York City) and Europe. To date thousands of people in 61 countries on 6 continents have been infected including at least 1,500 persons in the US. Monkeypox is a contagious disease with some similarities to smallpox. Smallpox was a dreaded worldwide scourge that has fortunately been eradicated from the planet. How does monkeypox present? The first signs are flu-like symptoms accompanied by swollen glands, fever, and body aches. Soon after a rash appears on the skin which rapidly turns into blisters. Once the blisters scab over an infected person is no longer contagious. Fortunately, monkeypox is not Covid and a pandemic is unlikely. Covid spreads rapidly by air-borne droplets and has a significant death rate; a staggering 1 million Americans have already died from this disease. Spread of monkeypox in general requires close personal contact. Many cases have been related to sexual contact especially among men who have sex with men. And monkeypox can be spread by animals. In 2003 nearly 50 people in the Midwest caught the disease from pet prairie dogs. Fortunately to date no American has died from monkeypox and if exposed a two dose vaccine (called Jynneos) is available. In fact, recognizing the potential for continued spread of disease, US health officials are readying 1 million doses but to date demand for the vaccine is outstripping supply.

Are Your IBS Symptoms More Challenging To Manage Than They Were A Year Ago? (BPT) - If you live with irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), does it seem like your symptoms have not improved in the last 12 months? According to recent survey results, this has been the experience for many adults living with IBS. This data comes from a recent Salix-sponsored survey of more than 700 IBS patients, of which nearly half (49%) of respondents found their IBS symptoms more challenging to manage in the past year. Additionally, the majority of respondents reported that their multiple GI symptoms have not improved over the last 12 months (between 77% and 81% of respondents across all IBS symptoms included in the
survey). Salix Pharmaceuticals, in partnership with the Farleigh Dickinson University Poll, recently released the second annual "Patient Perspectives Report: Living with IBS Now." The report, which is available at www.salix. com/newsreleases, reveals insights into the symptoms and behaviors of people living with the condition. If you are experiencing frequent symptoms such as constipation, diarrhea, changes in bowel movements, abdominal pain, gas and/ or bloating, it's important to consult your health care provider to discuss symptom management and treatment goals.
