Vote Tuesday, November 8th!

Voting is a right, a privilege, and a responsibility. Citizens fought long and hard to be able to vote, yet a disturbing number of people do not bother to vote on Election Day. There are several reasons why you should vote in every election!

Your vote matters and it counts!! Some people justify their apathy by saying their vote does not matter. There have been elections decided by a single vote and there have been times when a vote was tied, and the winner decided by the flip of a coin. Is that how you want your leaders decided? Cast your vote so you have a choice in your leader.

Politicians make laws that protect or restrict social freedoms. Vote to defend your personal social agenda! This includes controversial issues like capital punishment, gay rights, civil rights, women’s health, and prayer in school. Chief executives like governors and presidents appoint judges and justices. They rule on court cases involving social freedoms. When a new Supreme Court Justice is appointed, it is for life. A president may only be in office for a few years, but their Supreme Court selection will be there for a generation influencing the social direction of America.

Comprehensive health insurance is a major issue for everyone. Our leaders will decide who will get health insurance and how much taxpayers will pay to provide it. The issue impacts your health and your wallet. Make your vote count by

voting!

Today, we live in troubled times. Terrorists and criminals threaten to harm you and your family. Different leaders have different opinions on how to protect us. At the same time, some people think police and military forces have too much power. Choose leaders who you feel will protect your life and civil rights. Vote to secure your safety and safety for your community

Global warming and environmental issues impact us all. Vote to save the world! These concerns must balance with economic factors and our energy needs. Lobbying efforts are strong on all sides of the environmental issue. Stand up for what you believe by voting.

The primary thing the government does is collect taxes. They take a substantial chunk out of every paycheck and from profits on your investments to provide critical services such as police and roads. The Politicians we elect decide what taxes we will pay. Vote to keep your money! Bond issues and propositions decide whether you pay more property tax or sales tax for specific projects. You may feel that some are worthy of your tax dollars while others are not.

There was a time in this country when women, minorities, and adults younger than twenty-one could not vote. People worked hard and sacrificed so that we all have that right. It is your duty to exercise it.

Vote for those who fought for your right to vote!

Vote for those who died for your freedom! Soldiers and civil rights workers have given their lives for your right to vote. Soldiers continue to fight and die in wars. Your vote decides who the leaders are who make the decision to go to war. Decisions we make today impact our children, grandchildren and all generations that follow. Make choices that will improve their lives by voting. It also sets a good example and encourages civil responsibility. Vote for the next generation!

Vote or lose your right to complain!! If you do not bother to cast your ballot, then do not whine about problems with the world. It does not matter whether your vote ends up going for the winner or loser. Together we decide our future. Be part of that future by voting!

I am proud to say that I have participated in the election process since I first became eligible in 1968. I encourage everyone to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming election on Tuesday, November 8th, and all elections thereafter! Vote so you can have a say in what happens… you owe it to yourself and our country.

Is The Air In Your Home Under Control?

Dry air can be a problem in almost any home during the winter, especially homes that require forced-air heating. During the winter months, the combination of cool outdoor air and forced furnace heat can cause your home to be drier than the Sahara Desert.

Air that is not properly humidified has serious implications: Low relative humidity makes you more susceptible to catching a cold and flu viruses.

The respiratory infections caused by cold and flu viruses are a leading trigger of asthma in children.

Static shock, dry skin, itchy eyes, and a sore throat can all be traced back to air that’s not properly humidified.

Dry air can also cause structural damage to your home and possessions, the result can be costly. It can cause walls, woodwork, and hardwood floors to crack. And those annoying static shocks! They can cause irreparable damage to your electronic equipment. There’s also the impact dry air has on your energy bill. Dry air makes you feel colder at normal temperatures, causing you to overheat your home.

According to the Environmental Protection agency, for every degree you heat your house, you add four percent to the cost of your energy bill.

Dry air is more than just an inconvenience, it’s a threat to your family’s health, comfort, and budget.

Thankfully, with Aprilaire, there’s something you can do to control the humidity in your home.

Healthy air is within reach with Aprilaire. While dry air can make your home both uncomfortable and unhealthy, there’s no need for you and your family to suffer. Aprilaire whole-home humidifiers can help. They are installed as part of your home’s heating and cooling system and automatically deliver the perfect amount of humidified air, throughout every room of your home.

An Aprilaire whole-home humidifier can help control health. Maintaining an ideal humidity level between 40% and 60% throughout your home keeps your nasal passages and airways healthy and reduces incidence of cold and flu. In an article in the New York State Journal of Medicine, regulation of humidity “would appear to be the most important prevention measure” from cold virus infection during cold months when the home’s furnace is running.

Protect your home. You’ve invested a lot into your home—protect it. An Aprilaire humidifier can help keep your possessions safe from dry air. Furniture, hardwood floors, musical instruments, and electronics are better protected when your home is properly humidified.

Increase comfort and energy efficiency. Optimal humidity also helps you stay warmer at cooler temperatures. That means you can lower your thermostat and save energy , lowering heating costs.

The History of Houck Homes Benefits of Adding a Fireplace To Your Home

Houck Homes, Inc. is your hometown "Little Bitty Country Dealer" family owned and operated. Houck Homes Inc., originally L.S. Houck Sales & Service, was started in 1961 by Leo Houck on Old 22 west of Hamburg, Pennsylvania.

As business grew, he saw the need to move the sales lot to a more highly traveled road. He found a lot to rent at the light on Rt. 61 in Shoemakersville, PA in 1967. This increased business and in 1970 he purchased the sales center where we are now located, about 1 mile north of the rented lot on Rt. 61.

In August of 1973, Leo Houck passed away and Athian, his daughter, bought the business and ran it until she passed away in June of 2019. Her husband, Richard Wilson, now operates the business. Through many of the years that Athian owned the business, it was known as Houck Mobile Homes, but in 1996 she incorporated the business. The legal name of the company changed to Houck Homes, Inc.

Through the years the manufactured housing industry has come a long way. Today the industry has an overall interest in product safety, durability, and affordability. Exceptional materials are used in the production of our homes such as 2” x 6” northern pine lumber, roof ice shields, Whirlpool appliances, and brand name insulations, wall boards, flooring, and countertop materials. Also, all our Eagle River Homes are inspected by a third-party agency which gives the buyers an extra margin of protection.

When ordering a home, the style, floor plan, interior and exterior colors, and options are chosen by the customer to accommodate their needs and/or desires. Since we are a family owned and operated business, when you purchase a home from us, we personally deliver your home, have it set and handle service requests. We also offer transportation services for mobile homes.

(Family Features) Whether you’re constructing a new home or simply redesigning your current living space, there are many considerations that can truly make a house a home.

Amid budget considerations, design vision boards, specs and blueprints, amenities like a new fireplace can allow homeowners to celebrate the warmth,

comfort and ambiance a fireplace or other hearth product can provide. In fact, 7 out of 10 of homeowners have a fireplace and usage has increased during all four seasons since 2020, according to research from the Hearth, Patio & Barbecue Association (HPBA), showcasing that including a fireplace in

your construction or renovation plans is a gift to yourself and your family.

“When we’re designing our ideal homes, too often we may only think about what we want others to see and enjoy when they visit,” said Jack Goldman, president and CEO for HPBA. “The reality is visitors account for less than 1% of your in-home time. A fireplace is for you and your family, a personal addition that serves you and your household in more ways than you may realize.”

Consider these four benefits of including a fireplace as part of your next home update:

1. It can be a sanctuary from the ever-changing world outside. As people continue to spend more time at home, a fireplace can serve as a source of calm and relaxation, helping you and your family escape from the challenges daily life may throw your way.

2. It’s an artful piece of decor to display year-round. Whether it’s a centerpiece for your living room or family room, or an accent to your bedroom, bathroom or study, a creatively designed fireplace can provide an artful design element for your home, no matter the season.

3. It’s a safe, reliable heating source. A fireplace is an extra layer of security when weather wreaks havoc and can provide safe, reliable heat and lighting in the event of a power outage.

4. It can be the heartbeat of your home. Between screen time, remote work schedules and commitments to extracurricular activities, many families

experience fragmented home lives. A fireplace, though, can serve as a central gathering spot for you and your loved ones when together.

Fireplace Safety Tips - Whether it’s the warm glow of the fire, the crackle of the wood or the deep penetrating warmth, woodburning fireplaces have a way of making people feel relaxed and at home. However, there are some precautions that should be taken to ensure safe operation:

• Never leave a fire unattended.

• Keep a fire extinguisher on hand.

• Keep small children and pets away from the fireplace.

• Clear an area of at least 3 feet around the fireplace of furniture, books, newspaper and other potentially flammable materials.

• Inspect gaskets, door seals and the chimney annually.

• Have the chimney professionally cleaned as necessary to ensure it’s clear of obstructions and creosote.

• Install smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

• Utilize fireplace tools to tend the fire.

• Never burn garbage, rolled newspaper, charcoal, plastic or chemically treated or painted wood.

• Avoid using gasoline or any liquid accelerant to help start a fire.

• Do not overload the fireplace to avoid burning wood or embers tumbling out.

• Never close the damper until embers have completely stopped burning

Lifestyle Design

(Family Features) Upgrading your home design is an opportunity to tap into new color schemes. Knowing what shades are trendy and how different hues can work together for a cohesive design is an important step in creating an attractive design aesthetic.

While you might turn to family or friends for inspiration for your next DIY project, another resource for collecting concepts and options to upgrade your space is the internet. Consider the Valspar Color-verse, which allows visitors to explore colors in a unique way and offers paint color inspiration and decor trends they can envision within their own homes.

After experiencing the Valspar 2023 Colors of the Year firsthand by painting walls and art from the collection to see the 3D virtual house come to life, you can find the perfect paint shade for your space.

“Through the Color-verse, visitors can experience the 12 Colors of the Year in a realistic virtual home,” said Gus Morales, vice president of brand marketing for CBG Sherwin-Williams. “Aside from exploring the Colors of the Year, the home is an engaging space for visitors to create art, play games and order paint chips to see how their top color picks look and feel in their homes.”

Color Trends to Consider

Many of this year’s popular natureinspired designs are all about finding comfort, embracing a flexible lifestyle, rediscovering joy and leaning into the growing DIY movement. The most trendworthy, forward-thinking and livable colors reflect specific facets or emotions of life so you can update your well-used spaces with thoughtful colors that evoke positive energy and lasting change.

Comfort and Contentment: If your goal is to create a space that envelopes you in a sense of comfort, consider a white with a yellow undertone that makes a space cozy like a soft blanket, like Cozy White from Valspar. Complement the softness with a muted clay that brings in brown undertones that suggest gentle contentment.

Calming Restoration: Tap into the calming tones of nature with a hazy green that has duality, which brings in both the calm and liveliness of the great outdoors. Another option is a deep midnight blue used as an elegant calming shade to restore mind, body and home.

Healthful, Mindful Living: Create an uplifting space where your wellness is a priority. Evoke a greater sense of health

consciousness with a light blue that has a dose of softness used as a fresh neutral with uplifting qualities of a modern pastel, like Valspar’s Rising Tide. Reinforce the benefits of mindful living with a cool gray that is balanced by the warmth of the yellow undertone, a natural hue like a cotton muslin cloth.

Connections and Joy: Establish spaces where you can celebrate relationships with others, the world around you and happiness in your being. Consider hues like a white softened by a violet undertone, a harmonious shade promoted by digital connectivity. Evoke joy with a dependable classic tan that features a yellow undertone suggesting new life with uplifting qualities.

Natural Balance: Bringing hints of the outdoors into a well-loved living space creates a soothing ambiance. Consider a warm neutral brown tone inspired by the shades found in nature or a cooled down blue that strikes a beautiful balance between cool and warm shades in your design.

Inspirational Thought: A work-from-home or crafting space needs color to inspire great thinking. Try a faded natural terracotta that sparks individuality and warmth or a deep blackened olive, an on-trend neutral that embodies charm and sophistication.

5 Fall Home Maintenance Tips: What You Don't Do Can Cost You

(BPT) - While home maintenance may seem pricey, being proactive about home upkeep can save more money by preventing expensive repair or replacement costs in the future - not to mention safeguarding against damage to your home. The hard part is knowing how often and what type of maintenance to do, and where to start.

According to State Farm, fall is the perfect time to take care of many jobs, whether by yourself or by hiring professionals. Here are some top maintenance tasks to help protect the largest investment you have - your home.

1. Check your smoke detectors - According to the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), 96% of homes are now installed with smoke detectors. However, nearly 20% of them have non-working smoke alarms. The NIST estimates that if every home had working smoke alarms, deaths from U.S. residential fires could drop 36%. Why aren't these smoke detectors working? Primarily missing or dead batteries. Smoke detector batteries need to be replaced at least annually, not just when they chirp. The average claim from a home fire according to State Farm is $57,000. So buy some batteries, and replace those old ones.

2. Trim your trees - Little known fact, you're responsible for the damage if a tree on your property falls on a neighbor's house. Or if a dead branch damages your home, it can result in a homeowner's insurance claim, meaning you have to pay the deductible. For peace of mind, trim the trees on your property every fall. Find tips on tree trimming at StateFarm.com/ simple-insights/residence. If you prefer hiring

a professional, contact your local State Farm agent and they can help you find an arborist with community roots.

3. Check washing machine hoses - Did you know a washing machine hose holds 70 pounds of pressure? If it fails, it can spray 650 gallons of water per hour into your home. So if you're away for the weekend and a hose bursts, you may open the door to the equivalent of a 20-foot by 40-foot in-ground pool's worth of water, which can damage floors, drywall and personal items. Between June 2021 and June 2022, State Farm paid nearly $36.7 million to help customers recover from damage due to washing machine hose bursts, with an average claim of over $12,000. Hose maintenance is easy: Inspect the hot and cold washing machine supply lines monthly, looking for blisters, worn tubing, cracks or loose connections. It's best to replace supply hoses every 3-5 years.

4. Conduct a generator safety checkA portable generator is handy equipment for when the power goes out, and regular maintenance will ensure that it works when you need it. First, always unplug and turn off all power to the generator. Examine the AC wiring and alternator to clear dirt and debris. Inspect the air intake system and replace the air filter. Oil in your generator needs to be changed every 25 hours of running, or one year unused. When you're ready to use the generator, take it outside to a well-ventilated area before starting up. Generators produce carbon monoxide from the exhaust and can cause serious injury or death if used indoors, in a garage (including with open doors) or even on a porch.

5. Maintain your HVAC - One of the most

critical items to maintain is your heating, ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) system. Regular maintenance helps keep the system in working order, extending the life of the system and saving on energy costs. According to HomeAdvisor, replacing an HVAC system costs from $5,000 to $10,000. To save money and extend the life of your system:

* Change air filters regularly. Set a reminder every few months to replace filters. Dirty filters can impede airflow and make the HVAC system work harder, decreasing efficiency and increasing energy costs.

* Schedule regular maintenance checks (spring/fall) from your local HVAC professional. Some HVAC companies and local utilities have service programs where you pay a monthly or annual fee and they will conduct semi-annual maintenance checks. Pros will check the thermostat, clean or replace filters, lubricate moving parts, check refrigerant levels, inspect the condenser and coils and investigate unusual noises. Reach out to your local State Farm agent for a list of reliable HVAC pros.

Take care of your home, so your home can shelter you and your family. These regular maintenance tasks will help reduce the likelihood of unpleasant surprises - and coststo help give you peace of mind.

Tips To Add A Bathroom

Where You Didn't Think One Was Possible

(BPT) - Home renovation can be tricky, especially if you want to add a bathroom or kitchen to a part of a home where plumbing doesn't exist. Adding on to basements, attics, garages and unfinished spaces usually requires breaking through concrete or doing a major structural renovation that can compromise a home's structural integrity. However, above-floor plumbing like macerating toilets and drain pumps can simplify homeimprovement projects.

There are many above-floor toilets and other maceratingtechnology products on the market today. But not all macerating systems are created equal. If you're planning to add an abovefloor plumbing system to your home, here are six things to look for when purchasing a macerating pump system for a new addition or to replace an existing one.

1. Quality - Home renovations can be expensive. It may be tempting to opt for cheaper options, but they might cost you more if they break or cause damage to your home. This same principle applies when buying abovefloor plumbing systems. While there are cheaper options out there, you'll want to do your research and pick a product that is known for quality.

2. Manufacturing - Where a product is made can significantly impact its quality. In-house manufacturing means that a company can ensure the highest quality control possible, which isn't

guaranteed or easy to verify when manufacturing is outsourced.

Why does this matter? Knowing where your macerating pump comes from can tell you about the quality and reliability of the product. For example, a recognized brand of macerators such as Saniflo is made and assembled entirely in-house in France. These products are shipped to be distributed to the company's headquarters in North America and then sold to professional installers through the company's nationwide distribution partners.

3. In-country customer service - Opting for cheaper above-floor plumbing solutions could lead to dealing with a defective product down the line. Your next step would likely Continued on next page.

be to call the manufacturer's toll-free number to try to sort it out. But what if you're met with customer service based in another country, one that is unhelpful, unreliable or just plain hard to communicate with? In contrast, communicating with U.S.- or Canadabased customer service agents should ensure quicker responses, more reliable problem-solving and more effective communication. Purchasing from a manufacturer with a North America-based salesforce will also ensure faster, more efficient customer care.

4. Compliance - It's essential to find out if any plumbing product is made according to U.S. codes and standards, especially when it comes to above-floor plumbing.

A reputable company invests in testing its products to be in compliance with major plumbing codes. This way, the product will be approved to be installed anywhere in the country while safeguarding the customer from any potential issues.

Macerating technology uses a pump powered by electricity, and any electrical product that contacts water is potentially hazardous. You'll want to ensure the product is compliant with safety standards. Otherwise, you could be waiting for an accident to happen.

5. Warranty - Many above-floor plumbing systems have a product warranty of up to one year only. This can be a problem if the product breaks down or fails down the line, resulting in

costly repairs or replacement.

A major brand such as Saniflo offers customers a standard three-year warranty for their macerating pump products. Also, they have offices and multiple warehouses throughout the United States and Canada, ensuring optimal availability and distribution, especially during global supply shortage challenges.

6. Insurance - As mentioned above, issues can occur with electrical products that contact water. It's crucial that you can insure these products should something occur. Not all brands of macerating pump products can obtain or offer insurance.

To be specific, products should carry some type of third-party certification to vouch for their reliability in protecting property as well as the health and safety of those who use them. Examples of independent laboratories that test for compliance would be "CSA" and "IAPMO."

These nationally recognized laboratories test products to conform with ASME (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) standards for code compliance in the United States and Canada. Without such certifications, products could be deemed unreliable or even unsafe by insurance carriers.

Using these six tips, you can choose the right above-floor macerating pump system that will last for years to come. To learn more about macerating technology and how it can help you with your home renovation dreams, visit Go.Saniflo.com.

It is hard to believe that we are into the fall season. The leaves are falling off the trees and the days are getting shorter. October is also Fall Car Care Month, the perfect time to prepare our vehicles for the challenges of a harsh winter that lie ahead. While your vehicle may have cruised through the warm weather without a glitch, cold weather can set in before you know it. Autumn is the perfect time for car maintenance. So here are some tips I have gathered from a few ASE Certified Master Automobile Technicians that will keep your car or truck in perfect operating condition

Don’t Fall Behind When It Comes to Auto Maintenance

through the fall and winter seasons...

Battery - Believe it or not, summer heat does the most damage to a battery so they fail very often when the cold hits. The battery also works harder in frigid temperatures, so winter does take its toll on the heart of your electrical system. Have your battery terminals cleaned and the battery tested for proper cranking performance. It is cheaper to replace a battery than to have your car towed due to a breakdown. The only way to check the condition of a battery is with professional equipment. Have your battery tested at a repair shop

or parts store. Many auto parts stores will test your battery at no charge.

Cooling System - Check the condition of all your belts, clamps, and hoses. Worn, glazed, or frayed belts should be replaced as well as bulging or cracked hoses. Flush and refill your cooling system as per manufacturer recommended intervals. The level and concentration of the coolant should also be checked, a 50/50 mix of antifreeze and water is recommended. Remember, coolant serves many purposes other than simply preventing the coolant from Continued on next page.

freezing. It also prevents corrosion from rusting the inside of the engine. Remember, do not remove the radiator cap unless the vehicle is completely cooled and there is no pressure in the radiator hoses.

Tires - Cold weather can reduce tire pressure so make sure all tires are properly inflated. Don’t forget to check the spare. Inflate the tires to their recommended pressurecheck the inside of your vehicle’s door for the “tire placard.” This tag has the proper air pressure for your particular tire and vehicle. If your car is shaking or shimmying, have the tires balanced. The winter season is known for knocking wheel weights off of the tires and causing them to go out of balance. If your tires are showing signs of uneven wear, have a fourwheel alignment performed. Winter can also beat up our steering and suspension systems. An alignment is inexpensive as compared to new tires.

Brakes - Routine brake inspection and service is not only important for

safety but can also save you money in the long run. Failure to replace brake pads for example can lead to costly rotor replacement. Don’t wait until State Inspection time to have your brake system thoroughly inspected. Winter is not the time to drive with faulty brakes.

Oil & Filter- Change the oil and filter as specified in your owner’s manual. Believe it or not, this is one of the most neglected service items. Keep your vehicle in good operating condition by having all fluids and filters inspected and replaced if necessary.

Safety Items- Check all of your lights for proper operation and replace the bulbs if necessary. Replace your wiper blades and top off your windshield wiper fluid. It is a good idea to keep a gallon in the trunk. Store some essentials such as an extra coat, road salt, a flashlight and anything that would help if you became stranded.

Exterior -Winter wreaks havoc on your car’s exterior: Road salt is a car’s worst enemy. To protect your investment, have your car professionally cleaned. This service is one that will pay off in the long run. An exterior waxing and interior shampooing will keep your car protected during the winter season...

Today’s economic outlook is forcing auto owners to keep their automobiles longer. This is why proper maintenance is important all year long to extend the life of your automobile. So, use the fall season as the time to prepare your vehicle for whatever Old Man Winter throws at us. Happy Motoring! Stay healthy and safe!

Did

Cars

(BPT) - Did you know that cars actually ride on three tires?

No, this isn't an article about tricycles. It's about a major misconception that takes place where the rubber meets the road. Most drivers have no idea that there are three kinds of tires - and what they don't know might be hurting them.

It's vital that drivers understand all three tire varieties, so they can choose the right fit for their weather and lifestyles. With that in mind, here's a helpful overview of all three: all-season, winter and a hybrid of the two - all-weather tires.

The tires everyone knows - Look beneath your vehicle. Chances are you're driving a set of all-season tires. They're the most common tire produced and driven in North America, and they're likely what comes on your new car from the dealership.

Their name - "all-season" - might lead drivers to believe they're built for all weather conditions. Surprisingly, they aren't! Allseason tires are typically produced with durability in mind. That means they have harder rubber compounds that help them last a bit longer. Unfortunately, those hard compounds become even harder - and way less effective - once temperatures drop below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius). Think of it like driving on hockey pucks - they won't grip, and will slide on cold or slick surfaces.

All-season tires are a great solution for drivers who live in places where winter weather rarely visits. Drivers in the Sun Belt can often get away with using them year-round, and they're a great solution for those who only use them in spring and summer, then switch to winter tires in the frigid months. But don't be fooled by their name - in many areas of North America, all-season tires are more like three-season tires.

A four-season solution - If all-season tires aren't intended for use in all four seasons, then what is? Nokian Tyres invented the first all-weather passenger tire two decades ago. The name is similar, but the function is different: an all-weather tire is an upgrade for drivers who visit winter, or see winter visit them.

Unlike its all-season counterparts, allweather products are certified for use in winter weather. That certification is called the three-peak mountain snowflake, and drivers can find it on the sidewall of allweather and winter tires. At the same time, they're still intended to be a true fourseason option with good performance in

rain and heat. One example, the Nokian Tyres WR G4, has a soft yet durable compound with an asymmetrical pattern with one side built for winter and the other for summer.

All-weather tires aren't supposed to replace a winter tire for drivers who live in strong winter conditions. Rather, they represent an upgrade for drivers who plan to use one set all year long and need winter protection - for example, people who live in temperate climates but drive north or to areas of high elevation. Those who live in southern locales may use them as protection against the half-dozen snowy or slushy days each year.

True north demands a true winter tire - For ultimate winter safety, nothing beats a dedicated winter tire. While allweather tires are a clear upgrade over all-season, winter tires are the only tires designed to deal with severe snow

and ice. Drivers who see regular winter conditions should remove their all-season tires when temperatures fall below 45 degrees Fahrenheit (7 degrees Celsius).

Why? Because winter tires have much softer compounds that retain grip in frigid temps, as well as tread patterns that are geared toward maintaining traction on slick surfaces. As the inventor of the winter tire, Nokian Tyres tests its products north of the Arctic Circle to ensure they're helping drivers thrive in harsh winter conditions.

Winter tires are only meant for winter, though - those soft compounds deteriorate in sustained heat.

It may be surprising that there are three types of tires, but it's valuable knowledge for staying safe on the road. To learn more about all-season, all-weather and winter tires, drivers can visit NokianTires.com/ ShopTalk.

Actually Drive On Three Tires?

Key Questions To Ask When Shopping For A Vehicle

(BPT) - From seeking more fuel efficiency or seating capacity to replacing an older or less reliable car, there are many reasons to be in the market for a vehicle today. Whatever the reason may be, when it comes to purchasing, there are a variety of factors to consider to set you up for success. After all, since the average American drives thousands of miles per year, buying a car is a major decision that can be made easier with a thoughtful approach.

To help in your vehicle search, consider asking yourself these questions:

1. Where should I buy? Determining who to buy from can play an important role in the overall experience. And there is no shortage of options, like traditional dealerships, online retailers, individual sellers or rental car companies that offer pre-owned vehicles for sale. Buying from a seller you trust can pay big dividends when it comes to peace of mind. Consider whether you know the seller. If buying from a retailer versus an individual, consider how long they have been in business and if they have an upstanding reputation, especially when it comes to providing exceptional customer service. Additionally, who you

buy from can impact if you'll need to negotiate on price, which not everyone enjoys doing. Some dealers offer "no haggle" pricing, meaning the price listed is the price you'll pay, or price transparency, which means the vehicle price, taxes, fees and other costs are clearly labeled and presented upfront.

2. Will I be purchasing a reliable vehicle? No matter who you buy from, ensuring that you are buying a high-quality vehicle is of the utmost importance. Do your research before signing on the dotted line, and always conduct a test drive if you can. Some dealers also offer additional benefits to help protect a purchase. For example, all vehicles purchased through Enterprise Car Sales are "Enterprise Certified" and pass an inspection by ASE-certified technicians. These vehicles also come with a 12-month/12,000mile limited powertrain warranty, 12 months of roadside assistance and offer a seven-day return policy.

3. How soon do I need the vehicle? Today, lead times to obtain vehicles can vary widely. For example, wait times for a "build-toorder" car - that is, a car customordered from a factory - may last up to 12 weeks with some lead times lasting six months to more than a year. On the contrary, many used car sellers feature inventory that is readily available, so you can select from options that you know are in stock,

including different makes and models with a wide range of different features. If you need a vehicle now, purchasing a used car could be a faster option.

4. How do I want to purchase the vehicle? Purchasing a vehicle today can be done in a variety of different ways. Choosing a seller that matches your buying preference is something to consider. Buying a car in person remains a common option, but vehicles today can also be purchased in many states without ever stepping foot inside a dealership. There are hybrid purchasing models as well. For example, Enterprise Car Sales customers have the option to begin their purchase online and finalize it at one of the many Enterprise dealerships across the U.S. if they choose.

"There are several considerations to keep in mind when shopping for a vehicle today, and there is no onesize-fits-all approach," said Mike Bystrom, vice president at Enterprise Car Sales. "One thing is certainregardless of how or where you choose to purchase, you shouldn't have to compromise on receiving great customer service."

The Greater Hazleton Concert Series Presents

“Swearingen & Kelli” —The Music of Simon & Garfunkel

The Greater Hazleton Concert Series, Inc. is pleased to announce that Swearingen & Kelli…The music of Simon and Garfunkel will take the stage on Thursday, October 20th as the 2022-2023 season continues. This program will begin at 7:30pm at Hazleton Area High School Auditorium, 1601 W. 23rd Street, Hazleton, PA 18202, where abundant free, lighted parking is available.

This Nashville based duo recreates the music, memories, and magic of the most famous folk-rock duo of our time, Simon and Garfunkel. AJ has mastered Simon's intricate guitar playing. His deep baritone blends perfectly with Kelli's angelic vocals delivering a true tribute to the sound of the 1960's Greenwich Village, NY coffeehouse performances.

AJ Swearingen and Jayne Kelli have also been performing and writing music together since 2010, debuting their first self-titled album in 2013. Folk icon Tom Rush recorded and released their song, "You're Not Here With Me" on his last studio release. Their sophomore album, The Marrying Kind released July 2017, has been featured on Gretsch Guitar and The Daily Country.

This duo is on a mission to share iconic and self-penned music to new audiences around the country. Both artists were inspired by the great

singer-songwriters of the past like Paul Simon, James Taylor, Carole King, Jim Croce and The Eagles among others. Cold-Hearted Truth, their third album, bridges the gap between modern-day Americana and the classic sounds of 1970s singer/songwriters. It's the pair's most collaborative album to date, merging the talents of two artists— both of whom enjoyed acclaimed solo careers before partnering up for Swearingen & Kelli's 2013 debut — into a singular sound filled with close harmonies, swooning pedal steel, gospel piano, analog production, and storytelling both autobiographical and character-driven.

With influences from classic folk and country and 70’s pop icons, SWEARINGEN & KELLI have produced three different concert options for their fans and followers.

The 2022-2023 Greater Hazleton Concert Series offers entertaining, professional performances to subscribers. Individual tickets are $30 for adults and $10 for students. For concert information or tickets call, Cynthia at 570-436-6615, Tom at 570-788-3967 or Shirley at 570384-1226. IRS Employees?

People are thinking that we are about to have BIG BROTHER Government in the IRS. However, instead of worry thinking, do realistic thinking!

Since the COVID Pandemic how many businesses have closed due to lack of people who want to work? Remember when working at a fast-food restaurant was minimum wage? Now, how much are those workers being paid? Factories workers used to be paid around $12 and are now being paid about $20 per hour!

Let us add to the mix, we are talking about the US Government looking to hire 87,000 workers to process Income Tax Related Issues. First, have you tried to be hired by the US Government, think about the background checks, all the way back to your high school days; Second, education and skill level, you are processing tax returns and issues, you are going to

have to be a college graduate with a math or business background. Did you get pass here? How long does it take them to interview, approve, and then train 87,000 people? Then where are they putting them to work? Even if at home, what about the equipment for them to use? Buy new, where is the money for it?

Oh, and what about paying them? $3,915,000,000 annually if they are being paid $45,000! Where is that coming from? Point being folks, think! This plan is not an immediate action; it is a long-range action. It is probably a 10-year plan and even there once approved and put in place I would not believe it to be “straight lined”

at 8,700 per year as even that would be difficult to accomplish as far behind as the IRS is presently.

Also, remember that these people will not strictly be for “audits,” these people will be for replacement of retirees, deaths, as well as increase staff for increased number of taxpayers and increase staff where the government has allowed the staff to become low in numbers over the years.

So, unless you are doing something illegal, do not worry about BIG BROTHER!

Come see us, our staff has been doing taxes since 1975! We are here to serve you, the taxpayer.

It’s a “GREAT” Pumpkin Season at Pumpkin Hill Farms

With much of the Northeast suffering through a dry season, Pumpkin Hill Farms in Nescopeck Township has an unexpected bounty of pumpkins this year. Pumpkins need water during their growing process and rain has been scarce this year. Various agricultural agencies across the country are reporting a smaller harvest and smaller pumpkins. Owner Harry Roinick explained his good fortune this year was a result of regular crop rotation. Pumpkin Hill is known for its strawberries in the spring and after the season, Roinick plowed under nearly 50 acres of strawberries as part of regular field rotation. Roinick believes the shadier field and the nutrients from the old strawberry plants held the water in the over 50-acre parcel. The field is producing a variety of sizes, including pumpkins in the 45-60 pound range.

Pumpkin Hill Farms is located in Nescopeck Township on Route 239. (Halfway between Route 93 and Wapwallopen). Pumpkin Hill Farms offers

pumpkins, gourds and many seasonal vegetables throughout October. For more information call 570-379-2106 for a recorded message updating the current season or check on Facebook.

More Than Just a Jack-O-Lantern

The most popular use of Pumpkins this time of year is for decorating and carving. Unfortunately, 50% of the pumpkin goes to waste, much of it ending up in landfills. The Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture has suggested many uses for pumpkins. Roasted pumpkin seeds make for delicious snacks. Pumpkin puree is great substitute for canned pumpkin, which is used for pumpkin pies and many desserts. Pumpkins can be made into soup, breads, and even pickled. Innovators have even made pumpkin champagne. As long as much of the pumpkin can be wasted, fall is great time to experiment with your creative side.

• 1 teaspoon ginger

1 teaspoon nutmeg

1/8 teaspoon ground clove

1/2 teaspoon salt

3 tablespoons cornstarch

3 tablespoons white granulated sugar

To make pie crust: Preheat oven to 350 F.

In bowl of food processor, add flour, sugar and salt; pulse to combine. Add cold plant butter and shortening. Process about 10 seconds until it looks like coarse meal.

With food processor running, add ice water. Process until mixture clumps together.

On lightly floured surface, roll dough into 14-inch circle. Transfer to 9-inch pie dish. Lift edges and allow dough to drape into dish. Trim, leaving 1-inch overhang. Fold excess dough under and crimp edges.

To make pumpkin filling: In medium saucepan over medium heat, add syrup and vanilla; warm about 2 minutes then remove from heat and set aside.

In large bowl, combine syrup mixture, pumpkin, coconut cream, plant cream, brown sugar, cinnamon, ginger, nutmeg, clove, salt and cornstarch; blend with hand mixer until smooth. Pour mixture into pie crust.

Bake 1 hour. If crust starts to burn, cover edges with aluminum foil. The middle will still be jiggly.

Cool at room temperature 30 minutes then cover and transfer to refrigerator to chill at least 5 hours or overnight.

Before serving, sprinkle pie with white sugar and, using kitchen torch, brelee until sugar is melted and dark brown.

Slice and serve with whipped topping.

The Splendor of Autumn - Every autumn we revel in the beauty of the fall colors. The mixture of red, purple, orange and yellow is the result of chemical processes that take place in the tree as the seasons change from summer to winter.

During the spring and summer the leaves have served as factories where most of the foods necessary for the tree's growth are manufactured. This food-making process takes place in the leaf in numerous cells containing chlorophyll, which gives the leaf its green color. This extraordinary chemical absorbs from sunlight the energy that is used in transforming carbon dioxide and water to carbohydrates, such as sugars and starch.

Along with the green pigment are yellow to orange pigments, carotenes and xanthophyll pigments which, for example, give the orange color to a carrot. Most of the year these colors are masked by great amounts of green coloring.

Chlorophyll Breaks Down - But in the fall, because of changes in the length of daylight and changes in temperature, the leaves stop their food-making process. The chlorophyll breaks down, the green color disappears, and the yellow to orange colors become visible and give the leaves part of their fall splendor.

At the same time other chemical changes may occur, which form additional colors through the development of red anthocyanin pigments. Some mixtures give rise to the reddish and purplish fall colors of trees such as dogwoods and sumacs, while others give the sugar maple its brilliant orange.

The autumn foliage of some trees show only yellow colors. Others, like many oaks, display mostly browns. All these colors are due to the mixing of varying amounts of the chlorophyll residue and other pigments in the leaf during the fall season.

Other Changes Take Place - As the fall colors appear, other changes are taking place. At the point where the stem of the leaf is attached to the tree, a special layer of cells develops and gradually severs the tissues that support the leaf. At the same time, the tree seals the cut, so that when the leaf is finally blown off by the wind or falls from its own weight, it leaves behind a leaf scar.

Most of the broad-leaved trees in the North shed their leaves in the fall. However, the dead brown leaves of the oaks and a few other species may stay on the tree until growth starts again in the spring.

Weather Affects Color Intensity - Temperature, light, and water supply have an influence on the degree and the duration of fall color. Low temperatures above freezing will favor anthocyanin formation producing bright reds in maples. However, early frost will weaken the brilliant red color. Rainy and/or overcast days tend to increase the intensity of fall colors.

No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum Open Through November

The No. 9 Coal Mine was first opened in 1855 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. A large vein of Anthracite coal, known as the Mammoth Vein, was the main focus of mining operations in the Panther Valley. Early mining operations in the area were located in the town of Summit Hill, just above Lansford. As the mines in Summit Hill encountered ever increasing levels of groundwater, other methods needed to be employed to reach the coal. The No. 9 Mine is driven at a much lower elevation than the mines in nearby Summit Hill. As the tunnel was being driven it allowed groundwater to naturally run out from the mine portal without the need of pumps. The tunnel was driven into the mountain far enough to reach the first vein of coal by the end of 1857. The following year the No. 9 Mine was contracted to produce 90,000 tons of Anthracite coal for the company. The No. 9 Mine operated from 1855 until June of 1972, making it the longest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine in the world.

The No. 9 Mine was left abandoned until a local group, committed to preserving the regions coal mining heritage, took control of the property in 1992. This group is known as the Panther Creek Valley Foundation and now operates the No. 9 Mine as a museum. Restoration work on the mine began in 1995 and the first tours inside began in 2002. Visitors to the mine

ride by rail 1,600 feet into the mountain before embarking on a 600-foot guided walking tour. Tourists can examine the original 700-foot deep mine shaft, walk the “muleway” where young men guided the mules between the different levels of the mine, and see a miner’s hospital cut into solid rock. Outside on the grounds is the museum, housed in the No.9 Mine’s original “Wash Shanty” constructed before the First World War. The museum houses the largest collection of mining artifacts in the area. The many items on display include tools, blasting equipment, household goods, and more that belonged to the miners who worked the No. 9 Mine.

Inside the museum is a gift shop that offers visitors items such as books, carved coal pieces, t-shirts, and miner’s hats among other goods. The site has picnic facilities that are available for large groups. The No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum is open from the beginning of April until the end of November. Hours of operation are 10 AM till 4 PM, the first mine tour is at 11 AM and the last is at 3 PM. The site is open Friday through Sunday in April and November; Wednesday through Sunday from May through October. Discounts on groups of 20 or more are offered as well as Senior (65+), AAA members, and Veterans. Temperature in the mine remains near 50 degrees year round so a light jacket is recommended.

Carl Furillo was born in Stoney Creek Mills, PA., a suburb of Reading on March 8, 1922 and died there on January 21, 1989. Furillo’s parents were Italian immigrants. Carl dropped out of school after 8 grades and held various jobs in what would have been his high school years, but he always played baseball. After his mother died when he was 18, he initially played for a minor league in Maryland and batted .319 in 71 games, earning $80 per month. Because of his powerful arm, he also pitched in 8 games but lacked control. He also appeared in 8 games for Reading near the end of the season. The Brooklyn Dodger organization purchased the Reading franchise mainly to acquire Furillo. He did not disappoint batting .313 in his first full year at Reading and had 25 outfield assists! Longtime Dodger executive and former Minor League manager, Fresco Thompson stated that Furillo was asked to abandon his pitching career for public safety since he broke 2 wrists and 4 ribs in a limited time as a hurler.

In 1942, Furillo was sent to the Dodgers top farm club, Montreal and batted .281. He then missed 3 years serving in combat in the Pacific Theater. Furillo was wounded and received 3 battle stars. He turned down a purple heart stating he felt he did not deserve one!

Carl Furillo was quite unhappy with the $3,750 salary the Dodgers offered him. Manager, Leo Durocher told him to take it or leave it. This was the beginning of a long, sometimes violent feud between Durocher and Furillo. Furillo viewed Durocher as a smart manager but one who was unable to relate to younger players. Nevertheless, Durocher used Furillo mainly in center field. He batted .284 in 117 games. Furillo played all 15 years of his career with the Brooklyn and then Los Angeles Dodgers. The team finished first or tied for first 9 of the seasons he played, and he appeared in 7 World Series. He was nicknamed “The Reading Rifle”, “The Arm” and “Rock”. The last name was because of his lack of education. Another name Furillo acquired was “Skoonj” because of a type of

when he batted only .247 in 1952. He bounced back in 1953 after having cataracts removed in the off season, hitting .344 to win the National League batting title, Furillo’s lifetime average was .299. He struck out less

congratulatory telegrams from President Eisenhower and the Governors of New York and Pennsylvania.

In his last full season, Furillo batted .290 with 18 homeruns. He played sparingly in 1959 and was released after playing in 8 games in 1960 while on the injured list. He successfully sued the Dodgers and was awarded $21,000. Furillo felt blacklisted after the successful suit. He wanted to remain in baseball as a coach or scout but was not offered any job.

After retiring, Carl Furillo moved his family back to Reading and then Queens where he bought half interest in a delicatessen. He worked long hours for 7 years in this venture. He then moved his family back to Reading area while he worked at the World Trade Center installing Otis elevators during the week and returning to spend weekends with his family. His final job was as a watchman in Reading.

Carl Furillo later developed chronic leukemia and died in his sleep on January 21, 1989. Despite his being basically a loner, quite a few Dodgers attended his funeral: Sandy Koufax, Joe Black, Johnny Podres, Clem Labine, Bill Loes, Carl Erskine, Cal Abrams and team owner, Walter O’Malley.

Carl Furillo is often called “The Forgotten Dodger” and in fact there is a book with this title. A question that is raised is whether Carl Furillo belongs in the Baseball Hall of Fame in which he is currently not included. The two main arguments I make which are my own and not taken from a book are his long history with a winning Dodger Team and his very close statistic resemblance to Minnie Minoso who was a member of the recent Hall of Fame class. Furillo played all 15 years of his career for the Dodgers team that finished first or tied for the first 9 of his 15 years. He also played on 2 Dodger Teams

that won the World Series. Five Dodger starters that played in Furillo’s era are in the Hall of Fame: Jackie Robinson, Roy Campanella, Duke Snider, Pee Wee Reese and Gil Hodges, also in the recent class with Minoso. Carl had a better lifetime average than all but Jackie Robinson. The weakest Dodger position was left field. Billy Cox and Junior Gilliam played third and were good players but batted only in the .260s. All five Hall of Famers and Furillo were much better than average fielders. Pee Wee Reese was the weakest hitter at .269 with modest power. Furillo had to deal with the tricky right field wall at Ebbets Field which was 19 feet high with a 19 foot screen above it that was in play. Furillo played the caroms masterfully. I often watched the Dodgers as a young boy and remember that balls hit over the screen landed on Blednock Avenue.

My other argument for Furillo’s inclusion in the Hall of Fame is that he has career statistics very similar to Minnie Minoso who finally received a long overdue admission to the Hall. It is amazing just how similar Furillo and Minoso statistics are. Furillo had

a career average of .299 and Minoso .298. Both walked more than they struck out. Minoso hit 186 career homeruns and Furillo 192. Minoso had 336 doubles and Furillo 324. Minoso had 83 triples and Furillo 56. Furillo drove in 1058 homeruns and Minoso 1023. Minoso had 201 more career at bats. While Furillo and Minoso were both excellent outfielders, Furillo’s fielding average was .979 and Minoso’s .971. Minoso had great speed and had over 150 more stolen bases than Furillo. Unlike Furillo, Minoso never played on a pennant winning team. Furillo played on 7. I emphatically assert Furillo should be a Hall of Famer.

Carl Furillo appears on Bowman Baseball Cards from 1949 through its final year of 1955 when Topps bought out the company. After that Furillo appeared on Topps cards from 1956 through 1960. The 1949 Bowman rookie card is the most expensive costing around $150 in excellent to mint condition. The 1953 Bowman Furillo is next running around $50 in Ex-Mt condition. The 1956 Topps runs around $25 in Ex-Mt condition. My favorite is the 1951 Bowman.

Big Spike In The Barbie Doll Market Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori

Barbie has been in the news lately ahead of the upcoming release of the Barbie movie. Barbie who was introduced in the late 1950 and skyrocketed in popularity in the 1960s has made big strides in the collectibles market lately. The German Bild Lilli dolls, adult fashion dolls of the post-war era first inspired Barbie to be born. These German dolls have skyrocketed in value in the auction market. Recently, a Bild Lilli doll sold for a whopping $5,000 making all the Barbie collectors sit up and take notice. From where I sit, appraising 50,000 objects every year, this auction news about the German Bild Lilli doll predicts a big spike is on the horizon in the Barbie doll market ahead of the new Barbie movie. The American Barbie doll market reacted with great interest in many early and vintage Barbie dolls made by Mattel Inc. Appraised value for a vintage collectible Barbies are high, well into the thousands for just one doll. The original Barbie no. 1 with her black and white striped bathing suit (1959) still brings high values. Be sure to check the marks on a Barbie doll’s back or buttocks for information about the date your Barbie was made. Don’t disregard post 1990s Barbies as they have value too.

Valuable Barbies

Barbie was a different type of doll Barbie was inspired by an adult fashion doll called the Bild Lilli dolls which were popular in Germany. Teenage girls were not what traditional dolls typically looked like during the 1940s and 1950s. Prior to Barbie's introduction, most dolls were baby dolls, china dolls, or dolls geared to young children. Popular dolls were not dolls depicting teenagers and certainly not dolls that looked like adults.

Barbie highlighted teen and young adult issues, an interest in contemporary clothing, and how young people thought about jobs and the future. Barbie was different from other dolls of the era. Barbie had her own character. She wasn’t a doll imitating other characters from literature or film. This is Barbie’s great appeal. Barbie was not following the pack; she was a leader and young girls and teens were attracted to this

What Is Pet Wellness?

In the “Old Days,” when a dog's average life span was 7-10 years and a cat was considered ancient at 13 years. Now-a-days, however, some dogs can live for 15+ happy years, and a cat isn’t “really old” until their 18th birthday. These remarkably increased life spans are due to Pet Wellness.

The first part of Pet Wellness is proper diet. Just by feeding the right amount of a high quality pet food, you can add years to your pet's life.

Equally important, is the veterinarians ability to spot problems before they become life threatening. An annual check up lets your veterinarian check for external signs of illness.

Skin problems, loss of appetite, unexplained weight loss, teeth problems, and increased thirst or urination are just a few of the things that a good veterinarian will discover during a comprehensive exam.

It is also important to rule out liver problems, kidney problems, diabetes, anemia, etc., before there are any external signs of illness. Our odds of keeping an animal as healthy as possible is, therefore, greatly increased with regular blood screens. At the West Hazleton Veterinary Hospital, we recommend regular blood testing to help keep your pet as health as possible, and will give you a 10% discount just for following the Doctor recommended protocol. new doll concept.

The different Barbie concept made Barbie an unknown in the marketplace and this gave market insiders pause. Such dolls were untested in the market but Barbie persevered. Quickly, it became obvious that the new doll concept put forth by Barbie was desirable. Buyers bought Barbie dolls. Unexpected, but a great result for the new Barbie doll and its makers at Mattel, Inc.

Barbie remains influential today because Barbie changes with the changing tides. Barbie has adapted to changing times. The collectible toy market and major movies have kept Barbie in the front of people's minds. Barbie adapts to cultural and social changes of the decades from the 1960s to the early 2000s. Barbie had various careers, changed over time, even embraced new technology. Mattel Inc. has done an excellent job of allowing Barbie to change with the times too.

Collectors or people hoping to sell a vintage Barbie doll should look for good condition, rarities, and quality. Condition is most important when it comes to appraised value. Barbie dolls must have no stains, dirt, or damage. Collectors like to collect dolls and their accessories like clothing, shoes, sunglasses, etc.

The Wiltsie Center Hazleton Presents The Mahoney Brothers – Juke Box Heroes Live

The Mahoney Brothers “Jukebox Heroes Live!” billed as “The World's Greatest Musical Impersonation Show”, is on its way to the Wiltsie Stage Friday, October 14th. Doors open at 7:30pm.

With the same attention to detail that marked their highly successful "Long Live the Beatles" production, the Mahoney’s initially added tributes to such musical luminaries as Elvis Presley, The Beach Boys, Rick Nelson, The Everly Brothers, Jerry Lee Lewis and Buddy Holly.

The Mahoney Brothers came to the attention of the Seattle-based veteran producer and director Greg Thompson. So impressed with the Mahoney’s’ ability to reproduce a wide range of musical acts and styles, Thompson hired the brothers for a series of long-term casino revues built around the "Jukebox Heroes Live" theme.

Building on ten years as one of the premiere Beatles’ acts in the world, the Mahoney Brothers decided to expand their musical impersonation act to include many of their favorite rock and roll influences, resulting in more than 5000 performances around the world.

The Mahoney Brothers' now have an ever-growing roster of impersonations (now spanning more than 60 years of music, from the 1930's Benny Goodman to the 1990's Garth Brooks).

The Greg Thompson productions included performances in Atlantic City, Gulfport, Seattle, starring roles in "Wolfman Jack's Rock

& Roll Revue", and partnering with Dick Clark for the 1996 smash hit show, "Dick Clark's Golden Age of Television.

Tickets are on sale at eventbrite.com or via direct link from the Wiltsie website “Upcoming Events” page at www.wiltsiecenter.org or via links on the Facebook page “Wiltsie Center at the Historic Castle.” Tickets are $22.85 which includes fees. Tickets may be purchased at Boscov’s in Hazleton at the Laurel mall..

The Wiltsie Center is located at 700 N Wyoming St at the Historic Castle. Parking is free. The show begins at 8pm, and doors open at 7:30pm. Security is provided by the Hazleton Area School District. The Alice C. Wiltsie Performing Arts Center is a 501c3 nonprofit made up of community volunteers.

Calling All Princes & Princesses

invited to our enchanted Princess Brunch & show! Meet your favorite princesses at this fun-filled event with song, dance, princess photos

meet & greet,

Calling All Princes and Princesses

A magical event coming this November might just be the perfect afternoon out with your own princess — or prince.

The Times Leader Media Group and Capriotti’s, McAdoo, are teaming up to host the area’s first annual unique and fun-filled Enchanting Princess Brunch.

Planned for November 13, the event will feature all kinds of entertainment, such as song, dance, and delectable brunch and treats — and, of course, the opportunity for your kids to meet their favorite princesses as if they’ve stepped right out of beloved animated films.

“We are excited to bring this magical event in partnership with Capriotti’s. It will be an enchanting experience for all,” said Times Leader Media Group Publisher Kerry Miscavage. We’ve hosted 3 sold out events in the Wilkes-Barre area and Capriotti’s is the perfect setting to spend an afternoon with these princesses. The Princesses were so giving of their time, singing, dancing and posing for many photos.

Parents and children are enjoying these events.

“I cannot express how much, as a mother, it meant for me to see the excitement and joy on my daughters face!” a recent mom, Jamie, comment on a princess party event.

Additionally, the event will be helping a local non-profit, Helping Hands of Hazleton.

If you are planning on going to the event, you’ll have to act quickly: at a rate of $40 each, they’re sure to go fast. The only place to buy tickets is on the Times Leader’s website, so there is no need to contact Capriotti’s.

To purchase tickets, visit timesleader.com/princessparty

PennDOT Reminds Customers of Updates to Identification Products and REAL ID Deadline

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) reminds Pennsylvania residents that, as part of ongoing security enhancements, PennDOT is updating the design and enhancing the security features of its driver license and identification card products and urges residents who are renewing their products to decide if they will need a REAL ID before the federal enforcement deadline of May 3, 2023.

“PennDOT remains vigilant in taking proactive measures to mitigate fraud, such as identity theft, by updating our security features regularly,” PennDOT Deputy Secretary Kurt Myers said.

PennDOT began piloting the new products at the Summerdale Driver License Center in Enola on September 12, 2022. Since then, another 15 locations have started issuing the new products. All driver licenses and photo centers statewide will transition to the new products by mid-November 2022. The new products will be phased in during renewal cycles and will replace existing products. Both current and new card designs will be in circulation during the transition period.

The cards look different and have additional enhanced security features that improve fraud prevention and protect from counterfeiting. Both standard and REAL ID compliant products wÇill use the new design and security features.

“All of these measures are important enhancements to fight against fraudulent driver license or identification cards being produced or used. Fraudulently obtaining and using a counterfeit product can have an adverse impact on highway safety and national security, so the need to deter and detect fraud is of paramount importance,” PennDOT’s Risk Management Director Brent Lawson said. “These new security features make it more difficult to produce a fraudulent product.”

Additionally, beginning May 3, 2023, Pennsylvanians will need a REAL ID-compliant driver’s license, photo ID card, or another form of federally acceptable identification (such as a valid passport or military ID) to board a domestic commercial flight or enter a federal building or military installation that requires ID. To date, PennDOT has issued approximately 1.8 million REAL ID products.

All Pennsylvania residents are encouraged to use the upcoming months to gather the needed documents now to ensure they leave plenty of time to get their REAL ID before the federal enforcement date, especially if their driver license or ID card is up for renewal. There is no requirement that any resident obtain a REAL ID; PennDOT continues to offer standard-issue driver's licenses and photo IDs

More information about REAL ID can be found on the REAL ID page on the Driver and Vehicle Services website.

As PennDOT continues to modernize processes, PennDOT is exploring the concept of a mobile driver’s license (mDL) – a secure, digital identification stored on a mobile device such as a smartphone.

“The mDL would offer a significant additional benefit to physical credentials which can be lost or stolen, become broken or damaged,

contain outdated information, offer too much information (including personally identifiable information) when it is not needed by the requester, and can potentially be replicated by counterfeiters,” Baker said. “While we are in the early stages in Pennsylvania, we are excited for the future of an mDL for driver licensing and proof of identity as an option to serve the future needs of our residents.”

Follow PennDOT on Twitter and like the department on Facebook and Instagram.

Clint and I would like to take this opportunity to express a heartfelt “THANK YOU” to everyone who came out to show their support to our family and myself and a huge “THANK YOU” to everyone who helped organize and put together this amazing event for us!

We were completely blown away, in a positive way, by the amount of generosity, love and support the community has shown us during this battle. It was very overwhelming and emotional day for us, and I mean that in the most extraordinary way. I held it together as best I could, but it was de nitely hard… and to see the people come in and out of the door was so humbling to all of us. There truly are not enough words to express the gratitude we have for each and every one of you.

Cancer is ugly and it attacks everyone around the one ghting! My two “Tiny Humans” have gone through this with me twice now and it has not been easy for them to say the least! They are my main reason for ghting. I will continue to ght this battle every day for them, my husband, my family, my support system, and myself!!

So, again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the support you have already shown and the ongoing support we continue to receive. We will always be grateful!

The Second Most Common Cancer in Women

Breast cancer is the second most common cancer in women in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, it is about 30% (or 1 in 3) of all new female cancers diagnosed each year.

Different people have different symptoms of breast cancer and some people do not have any signs or symptoms at all. The most common symptom of breast cancer is a new lump or mass.

Some warning signs of breast cancer may include:

- New lump in the breast or underarm

- Thickening or swelling of part of the breast

- Irritation or dimpling of breast skin

- Redness or flaky skin in the nipple area or the breast

Supports

Breast Cancer Awareness

by the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton

- Pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area

- Nipple discharge other than breast milk, including blood

- Any change in the size or the shape of the breast

- Pain in any area of the breast

Finding breast cancer early and getting state-of-the-art cancer treatment are the most important strategies to prevent deaths from breast cancer. Breast cancer that is found early, when it is small and has not spread, is easier to treat successfully. Getting regular screening tests, such as mammograms, is the most reliable way to find breast cancer early.

The type of breast cancer is determined by the specific cells in the breast that are affected. The type of breast cancer can also refer to whether the cancer has spread to other areas of the body. In situ breast cancer (ductal carcinoma in situ or DCIS) is a cancer that starts in a milk duct and has not grown into the rest of the breast tissue. The term invasive breast cancer is used to describe any type of breast cancer that has spread into the surrounding breast tissue.

At the Cancer Treatment Center

at Hazleton, we have been treating cancer patients in our community for over 35 years. We use radiation therapy to treat breast cancer. External beam radiation therapy (EBRT) is the most common type of radiation therapy for women with breast cancer. EBRT is administered with a linear accelerator (LINAC) that generates and delivers highenergy X-ray beams to the breast cancer. It destroys cancer cells while minimizing damage to surrounding healthy tissue. Treatments are safe, require no hospitalization, and only take about 10 to 15 minutes. Side effects are usually minimal, and most patients return to routine activities immediately after each treatment.

Increased knowledge and innovations in diagnosis and treatments help make the future brighter for women diagnosed with breast cancer. If you, or a loved one, have had an abnormal mammogram, been diagnosed with breast cancer, or would like to receive a second opinion on breast cancer treatment, please contact the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton at (570) 459-3460 or visit www. Breast Cancer Treatment Close to Home

The Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton has been providing radiation therapy to cancer patients for over 35 years

According to the American Cancer Society, over 12,000 women in Pennsylvania were diagnosed with breast cancer this year. Early diagnosis, improvements in treatment, and increased awareness are contributing to a positive outlook. At the Cancer Treatment Center at Hazleton, we use external beam radiation therapy (EBRT) to treat breast cancer. EBRT is a painless and noninvasive effective treatment for breast cancer, damaging cancer cells and their ability to multiply.

Perfect Balance

Boutique — Making Women Feel Beautiful

February 22, 2016, started out like any other day, except that this day I was heading to my breast doctor to get the news concerning my breast biopsy. Never in a million years, would I have thought I would be leaving the office being diagnosed with Breast Cancer.

No one prepares you for the mental anguish when you hear those words. Before Cancer, I thought survivor and fighter meant that you were Cancer free. The meaning of those two words now means “you fight through all the issues you are left to deal with after surgery and treatments and surviving through it all.”

In the beginning, I thought it was the worst thing that could have happened to me, and I did not know how I was going to live the rest of my life. Two years later, I considered myself a survivor and decided that I wanted to be there for other cancer patients. I want to make their journeys a little easier and brighter. I wanted to educate women on their options and take away the worry they would have receiving the items they needed to help them feel whole again. This is why I decided to open Perfect Balance Boutique.

The Boutique opened in 2019 and it has changed my life is so many ways. Our goal at Perfect Balance boutique is to “make women feel beautiful.” We are dedicated to improving the quality of life by offering unique products

that enhance and restore a woman’s image and confidence.

The main purpose of the boutique are mastectomy fittings by certified fitters. We offer off the shelf breast prothesis, custom breast prothesis, bras, post op surgical garments, mastectomy pillows, and shower shirts. We also carry natural skin care products, chemo shirts and breast cancer awareness gifts.

We also cater to women without medical concerns. The boutique has fit many women with no prior breast cancer diagnosis. We take great pride in our large wig and headwear selection. Our wigs are

high quality synthetic, and we also offer wig care kits and wig stands.

We fit many women with and without cancer. Some insurances cover cranial prosthesis for women suffering with cancer. We also offer compression garments for lymph edema and other conditions. Some garments need special ordering so we will measure for the garment and place the orders as needed.

The services offered at Perfect Balance Boutique come from the heart and that is one of the things that makes us stand out from everyone else. When you walk through our doors, you are

welcomed with kindness. The boutique is inviting and homey. We take as much time with a client that is needed, and your privacy is very important to us.

Final Beam Raising at Cancer Center at Hazleton

Five months after breaking ground, construction crews placed the final steel beam to top-off the framework for Lehigh Valley Health Network’s (LVHN) latest project, a new state-of-the-art cancer center at Lehigh Valley Hospital (LVH)–Hazleton.

The new cancer center will bepart of Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute, which offers leading-edge cancer treatments and clinical trials to individuals within their own community. The Cancer Institute is also one of only three cancer centers in the country participating in the Memorial Sloan Kettering (MSK)Cancer Alliance, which provides

patients with additional lifesaving care options.

“Receiving a cancer diagnosis is one of the most difficult moments in someone’s life, and we are committed to supporting everyone, individually, throughout their cancer journey by providing comprehensive advanced care closer to home.” - Suresh Nair, MD

“This beam raising brings us one step closer to opening our doors in late summer of 2023 and offering the community an even higher level of cancer care,” said Terrence Purcell, LVHN Northwest Region and

LVH–Hazleton President. “This $20 million, 32,000-square-foot building will house the latest in technology and is designed with the patient’s comfort in mind.”

“Receiving a cancer diagnosis is one of the most difficult moments in someone’s life, and we are committed to supporting everyone, individually, throughout their cancer journey by providing comprehensive advanced care closer to home,” said Suresh Nair, MD, Physician in Chief of Lehigh Valley Topper Cancer Institute. “Our health care team is humbled to heal, comfort and care for the wonderful people of the Greater Hazleton region.”

“The need is very clear as cancer is the second leading cause of death in Luzerne County. This expansion will allow our patients to receive many of their treatments in a centralized location.” - Michael Evans, MD

When completed, the new cancer center will have three floors and include the Lehigh Valley Physician Group (LVPG) Hematology Oncology physician practice, an expanded infusion suite with private therapy rooms, expanded telemedicine capabilities and a session suite for rotating cancer specialists. The centerpiece of this new cancer center will be a state-of-the-art linear accelerator with a CT simulator that can deliver precision stereotactic radiation therapy to treat cancer.

“The need is very clear as cancer is the second leading cause of death in Luzerne County. This expansion will allow our patients to receive many of their treatments in a centralized location,” says Michael Evans, MD, with LVPG Hematology Oncology and Practice Lead of LVH–Hazleton and LVH–Schuylkill Cancer Centers. “Our community will benefit greatly from this advanced cancer facility, and we are very proud to build upon and enhance the current cancer services we offer at the LVHN Cancer Center on the Airport Beltway in Hazle Township.”

The Physician Assistant (PA) profession is growing faster than ever at a time when Americans need quality medical providers in every community. The profession will honor PAs invaluable role in transforming healthcare during National PA Week. Held every year from October 6 - 12, PA Week is a time when PAs and PA students celebrate their profession through local and national events designed to increase awareness of the value PAs bring to today’s healthcare team.

This year, marks the 55th anniversary of the profession – and 55 years of providing the best possible care to patients.

PAs are vital members of the healthcare team who provide quality medical care, improve patient access to care and are valued by the healthcare providers they work with and the patients and families they treat. This week, National PA Week, celebrates all that PAs do to deliver the best of care in this evolving healthcare system.

This PA week emphasizes “ PAs Go Beyond in 2022 “ to showcase the high quality patient care Physician Assistants provide and the value they bring to the nation’s healthcare system. PAs Go Beyond because they believe expanding access to quality care is more than just a job. It is the idea that inspires them, and the call to service they never tire of answering.

Part of the mission is to get the word out about PAs in Pennsylvania and all over the country by informing the public about who PAs are and why they are an essential part of our healthcare team.

There are currently more than 159,000 PAs in America, who are nationally certified and licensed at the state level to practice medicine and are authorized to prescribe medication in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. PAs are practicing medicine in every medical and surgical specialty from neurosurgery to oncology to primary care.

U.S. News & World Report ranked the PA profession as one of the top 10 best jobs of 2022. The PA Profession has been named by several top media outlets as the most promising job in America.

For 55 years, the Physician Assistant profession has provided quality medical care in this country and has made an important impact on patient access to care. The profession has grown from the first handful of graduates from Duke University in 1967. They were former Navy corpsmen returning from Vietnam. Dr. Eugene Stead created the profession to maximize utilization of their existing skills and experience as civilian healthcare providers during a shortage of

primary care physicians. Dr. Stead based the curriculum of the PA program on his knowledge of the fast-track training of doctors during World War II.

Among many medical services, PAs obtain medical histories, conduct physical exams, diagnose and treat illnesses, order and interpret tests, establish and carry out treatment plans, perform medical procedures like joint injections and suture wounds, counsel patients on preventive healthcare, assist in surgery, write prescriptions and make rounds in nursing homes and hospitals.

PAs are educated through intense graduate-level accredited programs that require the same prerequisite courses as medical schools. As part of their education,

PAs complete at least 2,000 hours of clinical rotations. To maintain their certification and licenses, PAs earn 100 hours of CME every two years and recertify through a national exam as medical generalists every 10 years. Studies identify high-quality care with physician-PA teams. The studies show the quality of care provided by PAs is comparable to that of physicians, PAs enhance care coordination and practices and institutions relying on PAs are more cost- effective than those without PAs.

Alcohol And The Skin by Stephen Schleicher, MD

Two years ago, I reported on a scientific study linking alcohol to melanoma, the most dangerous form of skin cancer. The research concluded that the more you drink, the higher the risk. Moderate drinkers had a 20% lower risk than heavy drinkers; moderate drinking was defined as one drink per day.

As to why: turns out alcohol is converted to a chemical compound called acetaldehyde soon after it is ingested and it is believed that this compound acts as a ‘photosensitizer’ making the skin more sensitive to the harmful effects of sun light.

Most recently the National Cancer Institute published the following statement regarding alcohol: “Although red wine has been suspected of reducing cancer risk, there is no scientific evidence for such an association. Also, alcohol is a known cause of cancer. Heavy or regular alcohol consumption increases the risk of developing cancers of the oral cavity, throat, voice box, esophagus, liver, breast, colon, and rectum. The risk of developing cancer increases with the amount of alcohol a person drinks”.

A press release from a British medical journal points out that “alcohol consumption is one of the most important, and potentially avoidable, risk factors for cancer. About

3.6% of all cancers (5.2% in men, 1.7% in women) are attributable to alcohol drinking worldwide”. And if you stop drinking?

According to the NCI: “studies have found that stopping alcohol consumption is not associated with immediate reductions in cancer risk. The cancer risks eventually decline, although it may take years for the risks of cancer to return to those of never drinkers”.

And to quote from an article in last month’s New York Times: “Various studies

in recent years have suggested that even moderate drinking poses a health risk, including to the heart. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention recommends that men consume no more than two drinks a day and women no more than one.
