Winter is finally coming to an end and Spring is making its way into our lives… the cold weather gets to be very exhausting and spring brings a much-needed change, and I couldn’t be more thrilled!
We have all heard of or spoken the words “Spring Has Sprung.” Have you ever given the thought of its origin? It is often attributed to Ogden Nash or E.E. Cummings, but the poem dates back even further in time to an anonymous author. The poem goes like this:

I Wonder Where the Birdies Is… Today, the current expression is referred to as “Spring Has Sprung.” A vision of renewed hope after a bleak, cold winter.
Spring is the season where everything comes back to life. After a chilly winter, the beauty of the landscapes begins to come alive, the sun is shining, everything begins to blossom into beautiful vibrant colors, animals come out of hibernation, the birds are singing, temperatures begin to rise, days become longer, and the nights are shorter. These are all wonderful things to look forward to. There are so many reasons to appreciate Springtime!

The rain is just one reason to like the new opportunities spring brings with it. Talking about the opportunities that Spring brings us… cooking and eating seasonally is the best way to ensure your food is at its peak flavor and freshness. While you can buy anything all year long, meat and produce are at their best in March, April, and May. It’s that time of year for local farmers markets to open. Who doesn’t like fresh produce and fruit, fresh meats, baked goods, and fresh cut flowers… Support your local farmers markets and bring fresh food to the table!
The added hours of sunlight can make all the difference for energy levels and outdoor fun. The warmer weather allows us to get outside and start enjoying all those seasonal activities we missed so much. Maybe it’s taking a walk in the evening after dinner or enjoying your morning coffee on the porch. It could be going for a hike or riding your bike, enjoying a picnic in the park, or gearing up for a wonderful and long golf season. That’s right… GOLF!!
Golf has always been my thing; my choice of sport! It’s very relaxing while enjoyable and it’s a great stress reliever! I have put golf on the back burner for a few years now, but I intend to get back to it this year
and enjoy what I love doing the most!
Not only is Spring the perfect temperature to get out more and do the things you enjoy, but it’s also the perfect time for opening the windows to let in the fresh air. It is the perfect way to chase away the stale smells of winter and enjoy the sounds and smells of Spring. This also puts you in the mood for “Spring Cleaning.” It’s the perfect time to get the house in order. Get rid of the clutter, organize, and do a deep cleaning. Not only will this renew your home, it will improve your stress level and bring joy to your space! It also allows you to give back to your community by donating your unwanted items.
There are many reasons to love Spring even if you consider it a stepping-stone to Summer. So, make the most of Spring; it’s one of the most beautiful times of the year. Get out and enjoy it your way and take in the fresh air!

Eating locally first means choosing food that is grown and harvested close to where you live, and then distributed over shorter distances than is usually the case.
At present there is no officially agreedupon distance for what constitutes eating locally. This leaves consumers to decide what ‘local’ food means to them. For some people, local is considered anything produced within a 150-mile radius. For others it means anything harvested within the same county.
Being able to eat locally depends on the
production ability of your area. People living in regions with high agricultural productivity often have a wide choice of local food to choose from. Those of us in colder, more sparse areas are likely to find their options more limited.
Making the choice to eat local produce may not always be the most convenient, but here are six reasons why eating local is worth it in the long run:
1. THE QUALITY OF FOOD IS HIGHER
It’s no secret that locally-grown food tastes better. Once separated from its source,

These products have been transported over long distances and will often have been sitting in distribution centres before arriving at the store and eventually making it onto the shelves.

3. EATING LOCALLY MEANS YOU’LL BE EATING IN SEASON Farmers can only grow what the season will support. Before transporting goods over long distances became commonplace we had no option but to eat seasonally. As a result, we based our meal choices on the ingredients we had
available.
Luckily, the natural cycle of produce is perfectly designed to support our health. And building a lifestyle around seasonal food supports the body’s natural healing processes.

By supporting your local farmer today, you’ll help ensure that there will be farms in your community tomorrow. This is vital for our long-term food security, especially with an uncertain energy future and our current reliance on fossil fuels to produce, package, transport and store food.
5. IT CARES FOR THE

Rich Pirog of the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture reports that the average fresh food item travels 1,500 miles to arrive on our dinner table. That’s a pretty large carbon footprint to leave for a little bulb
of garlic.
Choosing to buy your food from local sources eliminates the need for fuelintensive transportation. Where possible, select farmers who follow organic and sustainable farming practices to minimise the environmental impact of your food.

IT IS MORE LIKELY TO BE ORGANIC
When food is closer to the consumer, they have more direct influence on the food that is produced. Take farmers markets. Farmers that sell produce at local markets are likely to sell organic because they want to guarantee high standards to the customers they interact with, while the customers are likely to quiz them on their standards. This relationship is lacking in supermarkets. Organic means working with nature, not against it. It means higher levels of animal welfare, lower levels of pesticides, no manufactured herbicides or artificial fertilisers and more environmentally sustainable land management – this means more wildlife! However, small, local farms are not always able afford to become certified organic, despite using organic methods. Therefore it is always good to ask the producer next time you pass a farmers market. And don’t forget to sample their produce and see how it tastes.

• 3 cups graham crackers, assorted flavors
• 1 1/2 cups colored mini marshmallows
• 2 cups slivered almonds
• 1 cup chocolate chips
In large bowl, mix raisins, graham crackers, marshmallows, almonds and chocolate chips.

• lemon juice (optional)

Wash and slice apples.

Loaf Ingredients:
• 1/2 cup butter, room temperature
• 1 1/2 cups sugar
• 3 eggs, room temperature 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract
• 1 1/2 cups cake flour
• 1/4 tsp salt
• 1/4 tsp baking soda
• 1/2 cup sour cream
• 2 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
• Zest from 2 Sunkist® lemons
Glaze Ingredients
• 3/4 cup powdered sugar
• 1 tbsp. fresh lemon juice
• Zest from 1 Sunkist® lemon
Preheat oven to 350F and line your 8 x 4" loaf pan with parchment paper. Cream butter and sugar together in a large bowl until light and fluffy. Add in your eggs one at a time and vanilla extract. Into a smaller bowl mix together your flour, salt and baking soda. Alternate adding your dry ingredients with your sour cream. Fold in fresh lemon juice and zest and mix until well combined. Pour batter into the prepared loaf pan.
Bake in oven about 50-55 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Meanwhile, prepare glaze by mixing powdered sugar, lemon juice and lemon zest together until smooth.
Remove loaf from oven and let cool completely before topping with glaze.

How to select a pomegranate
When choosing a pomegranate, it is best to select the fruit by weight, not color. The heavier the pomegranate is, the juicer the arils (seeds) will be. Popcorn Shrimp

• 1/4 teaspoon Italian seasoning
• 1/2 cup fresh ricotta cheese
• 5 ounces fresh mozzarella
• 1/2 cup pitted and chopped green olives
• 1 cup arugula
• 1 cup flat-leaf parsley, roughly chopped
• Juice of 1/2 lemon
• Flaky sea salt
• Coarsely ground black pepper
Directions
Heat oven to 500F. Pour 3 tablespoons oil onto baking sheet and brush to coat bottom and sides. Stretch dough to evenly cover baking sheet. If dough resists, let rest a few minutes and try again.
Sprinkle Italian seasoning over dough. Dollop ricotta around dough. Tear fresh mozzarella into pieces and distribute evenly over dough.
Line second baking sheet with foil and spray with nonstick baking spray. Spread popcorn shrimp evenly on baking sheet. Bake flatbread pizza

Directions
In large, high-sided saute pan, add shrimp scampi and cook according to package directions. Remove shrimp to bowl and keep warm.
In same pan with scampi sauce, stir in half-and-half and stock. Bring to a low boil. Add pasta. Cook, stirring occasionally, until pasta is cooked al dente (8-10 minutes).
Stir in spinach and cook just until it begins to wilt. Stir reserved shrimp into the pan.
To serve, divide between 4 bowls and top with grated Parmesan. Serve with lemon wedges.

Salmon Chili Bites
Prep time: 15 minutes • Servings: 2
• 2 pouches (2.5 ounces each)
Chicken of the Sea Low Sodium Wild-Caught Alaska Pink Salmon
• 1 tablespoon chili crisp
• 2 teaspoons rice wine vinegar
• 1 teaspoon toasted sesame oil
• 2 bell peppers, cored and cut into 2-inch squares
• 1 green onion, thinly sliced
• minced cilantro
• black sesame seeds
In bowl, combine salmon, chili crisp, vinegar and sesame oil.

Directions:

ST. PATRICK’S DAY SANDWICHES
Yield: 8 sandwiches
Ingredients:
• 8 ounces plain cream cheese spread, softened
• 1 cup finely shredded mozzarella cheese
• salt
• 4 English muffins
• 24 slices cucumber
• 8 thin slices green pepper
• fresh cilantro leaves
• lemon juice
• lemon slices, for garnish (optional)
In bowl, mix cream cheese spread, mozzarella cheese and salt well.
Split English muffins in half. Cut each muffin half into shamrock shape.
Spread cheese mixture over each muffin half.
Place three cucumbers on each “shamrock,” one on each “leaf.” Use green pepper slice as stem. Place cilantro leaf on top of each sandwich.
Sprinkle sandwiches with lemon juice and add lemon slices, for garnish, if desired.

St. Patrick's Day — Legend & Celebrations
Saint Patrick’s day is a religious feast festival of Catholic christians having its roots in Ireland with the celebrations gaining significance in other countries, particularly America and Britain. Just like St. Valentines Day, St. Patrick’s Day (i.e, 17th March) commemorates the demise of the revered patronised Irish saint St. Patrick. So, what is the legend behind St. Patrick which led to the association of a festival in his name and how is the day celebrated ?
The story goes like this…
Originally born (in later half of fourth century) to Roman parents in Scotland or Roman England (there are conflicting opinions regarding the place of birth), he was previously known by the name Maewyn Succat. He was given a Romanicized name Patricius leading to him being known as Patrick.
Patrick was originally a pagan (a non-believer of Christianity). During his childhood, he was kidnapped and sold as a slave to the Celtic Druids who then ruled Ireland. It was during that stage of life that his attitude and beliefs towards God started changing. After six years, he escaped from slavery when he dreamt of God giving him instructions for the same. He was taught priesthood in France. When he became a bishop, he again dreamt of Irish people calling him and requiring his services.
So, he returned to Ireland with firm belief of converting pagans to Christians. Despite being arrested by the Celtic Druids several times, he always managed to escape and was not deterred. He actively baptized and preached Christianity. He even used diplomacy like gifting people in kinglets and gifting lawgivers. For 20 years he had traveled throughout Ireland, establishing monasteries across the
country. He also set up schools and churches which would aid him in his conversion.
How is St. Patrick’s day celebrated?
As a part of the celebration, Many Irish people wear a bunch of shamrock on their lapels or caps on St. Patrick’s Day, while children wear tricolored (green, white and orange) badges. Girls traditionally wore ribbons in their hair (many still do).

St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated worldwide by the Irish and those of Irish descent. major parade takes place in Dublin in most other Irish towns and The three largest parades of recent have been held in Dublin, New Birmingham England. Parades also place in other centers, London, Paris, Moscow, Beijing, Hong Kong, Singapore throughout the Americas.
In the United States, St. Patrick’s Day would not be St. Patrick’s Day unless the Chicago River is dyed green. Also, St. Paddy’s Day has little religious or historical significance. Established in Boston in 1737, it is essentially a time to put on a “Kiss Me I’m Irish” button, and parade drunken through the streets singing a mangled version of “Danny Boy” in celebration of one’s real or imagined Irish ancestry.
During your working years, you generally know how much money you’re bringing in, so you can budget accordingly. But once you’re retired, it’s a different story. However, with some diligence, you can put together a “paycheck” that can help you meet your income needs.
Where will this paycheck come from? Social Security benefits should replace about 40% of one’s pre-retirement earnings, according to the Social Security Administration, but this figure varies widely based on an individual’s circumstances. Typically, the higher your income before you retire, the lower the percentage will be replaced by Social Security. Private pensions have become much rarer in recent decades, though you might receive one if you worked for a government agency or a large company. But in any case, to fill out your retirement

And that was a good move, because increased share ownership is a great way to help build wealth. But once you’re retired, you may need to start accepting the dividends to boost your cash flow.
• Interest payments – The interest payments from bonds and other fixedincome investments, such as certificates of deposit (CDs), can also add to your retirement income. In the years immediately preceding their retirement,

Why We Say: It’s Not What You Earn, It’s What You Keep That Matters… Your Money Matters!

Are you already retired and afraid your nest egg could be lost in the turbulent market? Did you leave your old 401(k) with your former employer? Everyone wants to retire, but the deck is stacked against us. New potential legislation is being discussed to move the retirement age FROM 65 to 70!
Although millions of people own 401(k) and IRA’s, many do not understand them. How much can I put in each year? When can I take it out? When MUST I start taking money out? What if any, are the penalties? Can I change my investments? Why am I constantly losing money?
When you put money in a 401(k) account, you are essentially making a deal with the government. The government lets you put in the money without paying taxes on it, and you agree to leave the money there until you retire (or are at least close, which the government defines as age 59½). If you take the money out early, you aren’t keeping your end of the deal and the government hits you where it hurts: your wallet.
Withdraw your money early and you’ll generally pay a 10% penalty + regular income tax.
For Example:
After taxes and penalties, you’re left with only about two-thirds of your money. Plus, particularly if you are young, you’re sacrificing potential growth that could come from keeping your money in a retirement account. So, while it might be tempting to consider your 401(k) a windfall, think carefully about cashing it out. About those taxes: How do you avoid full taxation on this money? The short answer is… you can’t. Back to that earlier agreement: The government has agreed not to tax your money when you put it in, but when you retire and take distributions, the government steps back in for its share. The
benefit to you is that your money was able to grow tax-free all that time while it was in deferral.
A rollover mistake could lead to you paying higher taxes on the entire amount. Here’s how: Your 401(k) distributions are viewed by the IRS as ordinary income; that’s true whether you take $1 or $1 million. If the amount of a distribution pushes you into a higher tax bracket, you’ll end up paying a higher tax rate on everything above the new bracket threshold. Ouch!!

Lower Refunds For 2022, Fix Yours For 2023
By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc.Many taxpayers are finding that the 2022 refunds are lower this year and/or that they owe income taxes for 2022. This situation is caused by multiple reasons. Many credits have gone back to original levels or gone away completely and withholdings have been reduced that have caused taxpayers to have insufficient income tax paid in.
Child tax credit went back to $2000 per child with only $1500 of that being refundable and it is based on how much the parent(s) earned, not a guaranteed $2000 per child. Earned income credit this year is being based on the current year
earnings of the parent(s); not the 2019 dollars (as it was in 2020 and 2021). Child care credit this year is again a nonrefundable credit based on a percentage of expense paid, not a fully refundable credit as it was in 2021.
Stimulus dollars are gone and so “uncollected” stimulus funds are not coming in refunds this year, thus reducing people’s income tax refunds.
And lastly, and mostly, the situation that has affected people’s refunds for 2022 is the fact that the IRS DOES NOT WANT TO BE A REFUND AGENT. As such, the withholding calculations and brackets that employers and payroll services are given to use when they take Federal Income Tax out of your
pay have been lowered in a manner to get your withholding to a “break even” or a “balance due”.
Your tax preparer should be reviewing your return with you and doing tax planning to help you in this situation. You should be looking forward, not just at the historical document of 2022. The only way you can try to protect yourself from this situation is that you must try to have a minimum of 10% of your gross wage withheld as Federal Withholding. Bob Yevak Announces Democratic Mayoral Bid!
Bob Yevak, a 68-year-old lifelong citizen of Hazleton, has announced his candidacy for the Democratic nomination, in the May 16th Primary, for the office of Mayor of the city of Hazleton.
Yevak, who is no stranger to the city, was born and raised in Hazleton, graduated Hazleton High School in 1972, and raised his family here as well. He is a successful businessperson and has owned and operated his own businesses for the past 32 years. Besides currently owning Yevak’s Auto Detailing, he previously owned Church Hill Auto Sales and Mady Auto Spa in Pottsville which employed 20+ people. It was an all-in-one spa for your automotive needs, including a lube center, full-service car wash and full service auto detailing. At the young age of 17, he even dabbled in the real estate business owning multiple rental units and commercial space, which he still dabbles in today; for 50 years, this has given him ample knowledge of the Hazleton housing market. He was also employed at the HCA Water Company for 15 years, giving him a wide range of knowledge of how Hazleton’s systems work.
Yevak’s experience does not end there. For 40 years he organized local youth sporting organizations, and he was acting president of the Hazleton Little League where he raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for the Hazelton Youth - building a complex at Correale Stadium. This complex is second to none
in the state and has kept thousands of kids off the streets. He is no stranger to securing grant money to further advance any youth programs. For the past 12 years, Yevak has been deeply involved in Jim Thorpe at the Mauch Chunk Opera House. He was elected president of the theatre and has done an abundance of improvements securing grants and personal donations creating one of the best theatres in the state. His perseverance has brought it back to life, making him a well-known figure in Jim Thorpe.
Yevak brings a long history of being a successful businessperson, among other things. All his achievements and experience combined will allow him to be a great leader to the city of Hazleton and its people. He wants to give back to the city of Hazleton as its working Mayor and to be the voice of the people of Hazleton.
There are several projects on his radar to create a sustainable plan for Hazleton’s future! A fresh new perspective is long overdue for the city! While they are all equally important, his beginning focus will be on ensuring public safety in the city. Quality of life is another top priority for him because without quality of life we have no city. Another focus will be on improved infrastructure of the city setting paving the roads as an additional priority. Other projects on his list are education, revitalizing downtown, and better equality in economic growth and opportunities.
Yevak plans to have an open-door
policy for all citizens of Hazleton, spending numerous hours each week in city hall, finding ways to address the needs of all community members. He is aware of the challenges he faces and is all about delivering quality services the people deserve. He will take on these challenges and more with his sleeves rolled up and ready to serve this community. He pledges to the people of Hazleton that he will take action and not turn his back on any issues no matter how tough they are.

It was Ben Franklin who said "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." This is rarely more true then when dealing with parasites and parasitic diseases in our pets.
As the weather warms, the biting insects return. This represents a dangerous problem for all dogs. A single mosquito bite can cause Heartworm infection in any dog. Heartworm is almost always fatal without heartworm treatment and the treatment is very expensive. Luckily, Heartworm Disease is easily prevented. All dogs should be heartworm tested and started on a once per month heartworm preventative pill. These pills are very safe for most dogs and will also help prevent intestinal parasites as well.
Cats even share some of these risks as well. Even indoor cats can get intestinal parasites because some are spread by fleas, or can be brought into the house by other animals, insects, or even on the bottom of your shoes.

Cup of Coffee Edition
One of the most fascinating oddities in baseball history is that about 10% of the 22,680 players have the ten-year requirement to be considered for the Hall of Fame and almost the same amount played only one game. Perhaps the most famous of the “Cup of Coffee” player is Archibald “Moonlight” Graham, who was featured in the movie Field of Dreams. Graham had successful career for the Scranton in the early 1900’s. A little over 40 years later, another Scranton minor league star had a date with history. On September 30, 1951 Harley Hisner’s brief career intersected with New York Yankee legends.
Harley Hisner
Hisner grew up on a farm near Fort Wayne, Indiana. The youngest of four brothers, Harley was a star athlete in both basketball and baseball. Three of the four boys were signed to contracts by the Red Sox. Harley was signed in 1945 for a $5,000 bonus. However, his career would have
to wait as he drafted into the army out of high school. He served stateside as WWII was winding down. Hisner’s minor league career was erratic due in part to recurring arm issues. In 1947, the 20-year-old Hisner went 7-14, with a 5.21 ERA for the Class C San Jose Red Sox and the Class A Scranton Red Sox. Then, in 1948, he helped Scranton win the Eastern League title with an 11-3, and 2.48 ERA. (This was part of a great 11 year run by Scranton, with 5 championships. The 1946 team is considered to be one the greatest teams in Minor League history.) The following seasons, in 1949, Hisner went 6-11, with a 4.47 ERA in stops at Scranton and Triple A Louisville, and in 1950 he was 5-6, with a 4.65 ERA at Louisville. In 1951, Hisner struggled early and ended up 7-13, with a 6.26 ERA at Louisville. However, he came on strong at the end of the season, winning his last four starts. That earned him a late-season call up to the Red Sox and a start for the last game of the season. Some speculate the decision was due to a
connection with Scranton born, Red Sox manager Steve O’Neill.
A Big Sip from A Small Cup
Stepping on an MLB field for the first- and only-time time, Hisner found himself facing a first-place Yankee lineup that included five future Hall of Famers: Mickey Mantle in RF, Joe DiMaggio in CF, Phil Rizzuto at SS, Johnny Mize at 1B, and Yogi Berra behind the plate. The first MLB batter he faced was rookie RF Mickey Mantle, who went down on strikes. He then gave up a single to SS Phil Rizzuto, before getting LF Hank Bauer to hit into a shortstop to second fielder’s choice. That brought up Yankee icon Joe DiMaggio, who hit an infield single and inserted Hisner into the baseball history books. That single was DiMaggio’s final regularseason hit of DiMaggio’s career. Hisner got out of the inning by getting 1B Johnny Mize to fly out to right. In a scoreless first inning, Hisner faced five batters; four of them future Hall of Famers. He pitched
six innings that day and Hisner’s final career stat was 0-1, 4.50, with six innings pitched, seven hits, three earned runs, four walks, and three strikeouts.
Moving Along
In 1952, Hisner was cut from the Red Sox on the final day of Spring Training and never made it back to the major leagues. He played two more years of professional ball – going 3-7, with a 3.86 ERA in two minor league stops in 1952 and, in 1953, helping the Wichita Falls Spudders capture the Big State League (Class B) title by going 14-5, with a 3.87 ERA. He retired from professional baseball after the 1953 season to pursue a career as a machinist. After leaving the professional ranks, Hisner played semi-pro baseball through 1961; before becoming a youth coach. He was a member of the Fort Wayne team that won the 1956 National Baseball Congress Championship and Global World Series. Then, in 1957, as the Fort Wayne team finished second in the National Baseball Congress Tournament, Hinser tied Satchel Paige’s tourney record with four wins, while throwing 38 innings in 11 days. The following year, Hinser threw a no-hitter for the Anderson, Indiana squad in the tournament.
Post Script
Hisner met his wife Anna while serving at Fort Harrison in Missouri. She was in special services, writing newspaper reports for the base. They were married in 1948. His career was stalled not only by arm issues, but by serve tonsillitis, which required him to go to the Mayo Clinic and various contractual problems. Minor league baseball was quite different in the 1950’s. A variety of claims to his service, and payment issues led to his moving around to the point he retired by age 26. Another point of frustration came in 1952 when he was cut from the team as they were ready to depart Florida. He suspected the Red Sox new manager Lou Boudreau held grudge against him. One the advice of members of the Red Sox organization, he took it slow in the beginning of spring training to preserve his arm. He declined to pitch batting practice and Boudreau pitched him in only 3 innings and then cut him on the last day. During his only appearance the Red Sox stars, Ted Williams, Dom DiMaggio, Vern Stephens, Walter Droppo and Bobby Doerr did not play. Another Hall of Famer Jerry Coleman, who is in as announcer also played for the Yankees that day.
Hisner batted twice in his lone MLB appearance, collecting a ground out and a single to right field – finishing his MLB career with a .500 average. Sox legend Johnny Pesky grounded out as a pinch hitter for him the 7th. In 1976, Harley Hisner was inducted into the Northeast Indiana Baseball Association Hall of Fame, and in 2010 he received the organization’s Colin Lister Award for “dedication to the game of baseball and its historic legacy.” Hisner died in 2015 at age 88. His story has been documented in many books and online articles.
One Game Wonders
There have been 1515 position players and 719 pitchers who made it to the show for one day. Many were like Archie
Graham, who played one inning in the OF and never batted. But a few made the most of their day. 72 had 5 or more at bats, there were 2 two home run games, and one with 3 triples. On the pitching side 39 pitchers threw more than 9 innings.

Spring Cleaning Tips for your Collections Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori
By Dr. Lori VerderameSpring cleaning has its drawbacks and its advantages. The drawbacks are many as no one really enjoys house cleaning all that much. But, once the house is clean, there are some obvious advantages like the discovery of more space, finding long lost items, and quick cash in the form of online sales of that unwanted stuff. For art and antiques collectors, spring cleaning offers a great opportunity to review the condition of art, collectibles, and vintage objects. Deciding to repurpose items can result from a good cleaning spree, too. Identifying what to keep and what to sell can be the benefit of
spring cleaning and so can making new display areas within your home.
Here are some tips when it comes to spring cleaning your art and antiques: Don’t be too hasty to clean an oil on canvas painting. On my video call appraisals, I can’t tell you the vast number of collectors who want to clean their antique and vintage oil paintings. Many paintings don’t need to be cleaned. Paintings will darken over time but cleaning paintings may not be the solution. For instance, if a painting only has minor evidence of surface dirt or dust and it has no evidence of yellowing varnish, leave the painting alone. Never clean a painting using soap and water, an early 1900s
technique, because this process will dry out the pigment and the canvas. It will lead to pigment flaking and serious damage over time. If you still want to clean a painting, contact a professional art restoration service.
Don’t be overzealous when cleaning sterling silver pieces like tea sets, trays, water pitchers, picture frames, and candlesticks. This goes for silver plated items, too. When cleaning silver or silver plate, you are basically rubbing off a layer of the metal’s sheen. So, don’t polish your silver too often. Try to polish sterling silver and silver plate items no more than twice a year, that is every six months. Use appropriate white cotton cloths and recommended silver or silver plate polish. They are different so don’t use silver polish to polish silver plate and vice versa. Be gentle when polishing silver plate so you don’t rub the silver off to the
point where the under metal—usually copper—is showing through the silver plating. Flatware of sterling silver should be placed in a protective storage box when not in use.
Crystal and glass items require special care when cleaning. Crystal is supposed to be very clear and attractive when compared to glass items. For cloudy glass vases or bowls, use equal parts of white vinegar and distilled water and wash the crystal or glass object very gently. Try to avoid using any harsh chemicals or cleaning agents on any of your antique items. Do not submerge any glass or crystal item into standing water that is too cold or too hot as this “shock to the system” may result in cracking your antique or vintage glass or crystal item upon impact. Spring is coming — Automobile maintenance
By Thomas R. BuffIt is hard to believe that this winter season is finally coming to an end. March is here so we hope the warm weather is close. Mr. Groundhog predicted an early Spring so we will be positive, fingers crossed. This winter season was a bit on the milder side but nonetheless still hard on our vehicles. Our batteries were still subject to many cold and snowy mornings and our heaters ran on high most of the time we were in our vehicles. But spring is a time of fresh starts, so here are some tips I have gathered from a few ASE Certified Master Automobile Technicians that will keep your car or truck in perfect operating condition.
Battery - The battery works harder in frigid temperatures, so winter does take its toll on the heart of your electrical system. Have your battery terminals cleaned and the battery tested for proper cranking performance. It is cheaper to replace a battery than to have your car towed due to a breakdown. The fact is that most batteries fail in the warm weather due to the abuse they receive in the cold winter months.
Cooling System - Check the condition of all your belts, clamps, and hoses. Worn, glazed, or frayed belts should be replaced as well as bulging or cracked hoses. Flush and refill your cooling system as per manufacturer recommended intervals. The level and concentration of the coolant should be checked. Remember, coolant serves many purposes other than simply preventing the coolant from freezing.
Tires - Cold weather can reduce tire pressure so make sure all tires are properly inflated. Don’t forget to check the spare. Inflate the tires to their recommended pressure- check the inside of your vehicle’s door for the “tire placard.” This tag has the proper air pressure for your particular tire and vehicle. If your car is shaking or shimmying, have the tires balanced. The winter season and the tremendous potholes are known for knocking wheel weights off of the tires and causing them to go out of balance. If your tires are showing signs of uneven wear, have a four-wheel alignment performed. Winter can also beat up our steering and suspension system. An alignment is inexpensive as compared to new tires.
Brakes - Routine brake inspection and service is not only important for safety but can also save you money in the long run.
Failure to replace brake pads for example can lead to costly rotor replacement. Don’t wait until State Inspection time to have your brake system thoroughly inspected.
Oil & Filter - Change the oil and filter as specified in your owner’s manual. Believe it or not, this is one of the most neglected service items. Keep your vehicle in good operating condition by having all fluids and filters inspected and replaced if necessary.
Safety Items - Check all of your lights for proper operation and replace the bulbs if necessary. Replace your wiper blades and top off your windshield wiper fluid. It is a good idea to keep a gallon in the trunk. A
spare gallon of coolant is also a good idea to have on hand.
Exterior - Winter wreaks havoc on your car’s exterior: Road salt is a car’s worst enemy. To protect your investment, have your car professionally cleaned. This service is one that will pay off in the long run. An exterior waxing and interior shampooing will keep your car looking good for many years. Today’s economic outlook is forcing auto owners to keep their automobiles longer. This is why proper maintenance is important to extend the life of your automobile. Ensuring Good Nutrition and Better Health of Children and Caregivers
(StatePoint) There are 2.5 million children in the United States growing up in “grandfamilies,” meaning they’re being raised by relatives or close friends without their parents in the home, and they face higher rates of hunger and food insecurity, according to a new report.
The Generations United report, “Together at the Table: Supporting the Nutrition, Health and WellBeing of Grandfamilies,” highlights the particular struggles of such households, which are often unprepared financially for the unexpected job of raising a child, and may encounter difficulty accessing food and nutrition programs designed to help.
In fact, 25% of grandparent-
headed households experienced food insecurity between 2019 and 2020, which is more than twice the national rate. The long-term health implications of food insecurity including diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, obesity and eating disorders are dire. Additionally, food insecurity negatively affects a child’s ability to learn and grow. While families from all areas of the country face food insecurity, for the large number of grandfamilies
living in the South and in rural areas, services are often more limited or challenging to access. What’s more, grandfamilies are disproportionately Black, Latino and American Indian and Alaska Native, populations that already have disproportionate rates of food insecurity due to years of systemic racism.

“Research shows that being raised by family members or close friends is the best option for children who can’t be raised by their parents,” said Donna Butts, the executive director of Generations United. “But unfortunately, these families face hunger and food insecurity at much higher rates than the average family. The need for basic nutrition and adequate food is universal, and every family deserves to be healthy and thrive. The fact that many of our policies and programs to reduce hunger were not designed with grandfamilies in mind should not stand in the way of this right.”

Honey Health Benefits
by Stephen Schleicher, MDI love honey. Sure beats sugar in tea. And as my throat is often parched from speaking all day, at night I often suck on a honey lozenge. Honees is my favorite brand (by far), purchased at a reasonable price on amazon. Needless to say, I was well pleased to read of a recently published study in the journal Nutrition Reviews titled: “Effect of honey on cardiometabolic risk factors”.
So, what did the study find? Well, researchers found that consuming raw honey appears to benefit cardiometabolic health. To quote from a summary published in scitechdaily.com, “honey consumption was associated with lower fasting blood glucose, total and LDL (‘bad’) cholesterol, triglycerides, and a marker of fatty liver disease. Additionally, honey consumption was linked to higher levels of HDL (‘good’) cholesterol.” According to a study author, “these results are surprising because honey is about 80 percent sugar…….. but honey is also a complex composition of common and rare sugars, proteins, organic acids, and other bioactive compounds that very likely have health benefits.”
Summarizing another author:
““We’re not saying you should start having honey if you currently avoid sugar, the takeaway is more about replacement — if you’re using table sugar, syrup, or another sweetener, switching those sugars for honey might lower cardiometabolic risks.” So, in summation: don’t smoke, drink alcohol in moderation (if at all), and suck on honey lozenges. Kind of makes sense.
You'll Be Glad You Did by
At my church, our Pastor has been preaching a series called, “You’ll be glad you did: Timeless advice for troubled times.” Key word there is “advice,” not rules. When giving or receiving advice, we often hear people say any one or more of the following phrases: “I’m glad I did, I wish I had, I’m glad I didn’t,” or “I wish I hadn’t.” In listening to his messages each week, I thought these same advice frameworks can easily apply to health and fitness!
These are troubled times for our nation’s health. According to National Center for Health Statistics (2022), 15.9% of adults 20 and over have been diagnosed with diabetes, the tally for physician office visits for those with diabetes is at 27 million per year, type 2 diabetes accounts for 500,000 plus emergency room visits per year, and diabetes is ranked as the 8th leading cause of death. Heart disease is the number one (1) cause of death in our country. An estimated 48.1% of adults aged 18 and over have high blood pressure. It is estimated that 41.9% of adults aged 20 and older are obese and 73.6% of adults aged 20 and older are classified as overweight. This is just the tip of the iceberg of conditions that our nation is faced with that can be attributed to unhealthy lifestyles.
Talk to anyone who has adopted a healthy lifestyle and has chosen to pursue fitness, and they will likely tell you that they are “glad they did.” Those who have prioritized muscle building will tell you that they are “glad they did” because it helps them feel more confident and capable in their everyday lives. People who take the time to prioritize themselves by establishing a health and fitness routine are “glad they did” because it helps them show up better for others in their lives, whether it be at home or in their work.
Making changes in our health or establishing a fitness routine can be, and is, a challenge for many.
When you talk to those who are enjoying their health or fitness routine, they might say they “wish they had” reached out sooner for help. This is not to say that someone can’t accomplish great results on their own, they certainly can. Unfortunately too many lose out

on progress because they were too nervous or shy to ask for help. My encouragement for you: it’s OK to ask for help. We all need help sometimes!
Some people might also “wish they had” started their health and fitness journey sooner. Personally speaking, I didn’t adopt this lifestyle till I was 33. Although I am glad I found it when I did, given how much it has helped me live a larger life, I wish I had found it sooner. However, I am grateful to have started when I did versus never starting at all.
Speak with someone who has settled into a health and fitness routine and has maintained their results, and they might tell you they are “glad they didn’t” chase the next fad. Chasing fad after fad will only result in you continuously chasing your tail and not making true progress towards your goals. People who have made progress towards their goals will be “glad they didn’t” get impatient or give up when they felt like they hit plateaus or experienced times when it seemed like

nothing was improving. Oftentimes, just on the other side of those time periods is a major breakthrough. Lastly, those who have been successful with improving their health and fitness “wish they hadn’t” wasted their time searching for the next quick fix. These “fixes” are bandaids and don’t result in any true, long-term change. The quick “fix” often leaves you right back where you started, if not even further from where you really want to be. Be willing to play the long game and you will likely develop the habits that yield a more sustainable and healthy lifestyle. Just like those who are “glad they didn’t” give up, my wish for you is that you don’t say to yourself “I wish I hadn’t” given up. There is a great quote by Jim Rohn, a well-known motivational speaker where he stated “we must all suffer from one of two pains: the pain of discipline or the pain of regret. The difference is discipline weighs ounces while regret weighs tons.” It is by far easier to be unhealthy in our culture today. It takes work and
effort to be healthier. However, ask anyone who has been hospitalized with a chronic condition or has lost their independence due to not tending to their body across their lifetime, and they might say they “wish they hadn’t” viewed health and fitness as an inconvenience. That’s some heavy regret.
No doubt, change is far from easy. Adopting a healthy lifestyle is easier for some than others. It does take discipline and the wonderful thing is, you can cultivate it. It does take work, but it is worth it. We all start where we start and we go from there. Start simple and don’t overcomplicate it. Choose a healthy lifestyle and I know for certain you will be saying you are “glad you did.”

Mom’s Weight Loss Promotes Health, Confidence
Kristy Berger is one busy woman. A single mother of two young children, she works part-time at a grocery store and is pursuing her degree in elementary education. And in the middle of all that, her weight became an unhealthy obstacle. “I gained a lot of weight after having my two children,” she says. “And with two children, I didn’t have a lot of time to spend in the gym to try to lose the weight. It just wasn’t feasible.” With her children involved in activities, eating healthy was a challenge as they often had to grab something on the go.
Making the decision
At nearly 300 pounds, she wanted to be able to keep up with her children, ages 4 and 5, without getting easily exhausted. She began talking with another mother at her daughter’s day care, a woman who previously had bariatric surgery at Lehigh Valley Health Network (LVHN). That spurred Berger, of Jim Thorpe, to seek more information through LVHN and attend the six months of mandatory classes before having surgery. She had to lose a small amount of weight for her health insurance to cover the surgery and that in itself was a struggle, she says.
On July 1, 2021, surgeon Michael Mahoney, DO, performed Berger’s laparoscopic bariatric surgery at Lehigh Valley Hospital–Hazleton. Berger, at 29, underwent a sleeve gastrectomy, where about 75 percent of her stomach was removed, leaving a narrow tube, or sleeve, of stomach. Mahoney says the vast majority of his bariatric surgery patients don’t need to lose hundreds of pounds. “This isn’t that 600-poundlife television show,” he says. “Everybody’s goal coming in is to lose weight and become healthier. Almost universally, they are glad they had the surgery.”

I walked into the room to help a 46-year-old man, and his wife accompanied him. As I started to listen to his history, he said “my job isn’t physical, but I come home from work exhausted.” So I gently asked, “on my form, you put you are 70 pounds overweight, you smoke 2 packs a day, and do you exercise at all?” He said “no, after I eat, I sit in my chair and I just watch TV all night, every night.” I looked at his wife, and she knew what I was about to say.
I said to him, “You are too young to act so old. I want you to walk after supper one block a day for a week, until you could walk one mile a day after supper. And I want you to read this every day”.
“I am as young as I think I am. My thoughts will determine my future. So I will say 10x/day, that I love my job, I love my wife, I will walk one mile per day and change my life!”
His first response was, “Are you trying to kill me? I’m out of breath when I just walk up my stairs”. I told him he is
Getting back into life
Berger says she didn’t lose a lot of weight in the first six months after surgery. But then, it started coming off. Today, she’s down to 135 pounds. “I’ve never felt better, and I’ve never felt better about myself,” she says. “I have so much more energy.”
Berger says she had a lot of support before and after her surgery from her mother, who’s also her nextdoor neighbor, and friends.
Like most bariatric surgery patients, Berger says she needed to be mentally strong and ready for the lifestyle and eating habit changes that come with weight-loss surgery.
“You also have to be mentally strong for what people are going to say,” she says. That includes comments that having surgery was somehow taking the easy road to weight loss.
“My goal was to be healthy. They don’t see the tough times. It’s a real lifestyle change,” she says.

Mahoney says Berger is doing “fantastic” more than a year out from her surgery. Berger had high praise for Mahoney and the entire bariatric surgery program at LVHN.
“Dr. Mahoney is great. He’s laid back and welcoming, which I like,” she says. “Everyone is very accommodating. They all want the best for you and they’re always on your side.”
Berger says she’s had old friends reach out to her on social media to ask about her bariatric surgery experience. “I tell them it’s not something you can jump into,” she says. “It’s a big commitment. I’m not going to lie. It’s hard at first. You have a liquid diet for weeks. It’s not only about what you eat, but how you eat.”
When all is said and done, Berger says bariatric surgery was “absolutely worth it.”
When she graduates with her teaching degree in 2024, Berger will start yet another chapter in her life. She’s already written the weight-loss chapter – and it had a happy ending.
