Happy Birthday Panorama Community Magazine! It is not often, but there are times when it is necessary to toot your own horn. Panorama Community Magazine is now 42 years young! Seems to me that we must be committing to the ideals and principles that were established by the first publisher, Edward Genetti. Additionally, the two previous publishers, Neil Rodino and Lex Sloot, adhered to those principles that were established by Mr. Genetti. Both Neil and Lex created innovative practices to operate by. The Collum family accepted the responsibility of continuing these standards in 2013. Since that time, Panorama consistently remains as the “premier magazine” in this area for both our advertisers and readers. From its humble beginnings in 1982 to the present day, we have grown from distributing 2,000 black & white magazines to now distributing over 14,000 full color magazines with high gloss cover monthly. Our readership has expanded to an area of five counties with a population of 600,000, and a steady amount of 40,000 plus readers. It is an honor, to be in high demand with our advertisers and readers. Our goal is to continue to grow and expand the content for our readers while providing platforms to our advertisers to market their business. Cocoa-Kissed Red Velvet Pancakes Recipe courtesy of Nestl Servings: 10 pancakes

• 1 cup all-purpose flour • 1/4 cup granulated sugar • 3 tablespoons Nestl Toll House Baking Cocoa • 1 teaspoon baking powder • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda • 1/2 teaspoon salt • 1 large egg • 1 cup reduced-fat buttermilk or low-fat milk • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted • 1 1/2 teaspoons vanilla extract • 1 teaspoon red food coloring • heart-shaped pancake cutters or cookie cutters (optional) • butter, for garnish (optional) • powdered sugar, for garnish (optional) • maple syrup, for garnish (optional) • fresh berries, for garnish (optional) In large bowl, combine flour, sugar, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda and salt; stir well. In separate large bowl, whisk together egg, buttermilk, unsalted butter, vanilla extract and food coloring. Add to flour mixture; stir to combine. Allow mixture to sit 5

minutes. Heat nonstick skillet or griddle over medium heat. Brush with oil or butter. Add about 1/4 cup batter to skillet. Cook about 2 minutes, or until bubbles start to form on top. Flip and cook 1-2 minutes, or until bottom is lightly browned. Serve immediately with butter, powdered sugar, syrup and berries, if desired. Tip: If using pancake or cookie cutters, be sure to coat with oil so pancakes don't stick. Place cutters in skillet and pour batter into cutters. move cutters before flipping.

Collecting Camphor Glass Jewelry By Dr. Lori Verderame

When I see everyone from 20-something major league baseball players to sensational senior women reintroducing pearls to their everyday (and team uniform) wardrobes, you know that the values are going to rise with the collecting tides. After pearls, cameos representing figures from the ancient Greek and Roman age are all the rage with collectors searching near and far, and of course online for the best carved, most interesting, and intricate examples of the pendant and pin art form. However, another type of jewelry trend is giving pearls and cameos a run for their money. It is camphor glass jewelry. Art Deco jewelry pendants made of exotic camphor glass and oversized brooches set in sterling silver or white gold are the newest vintage objects of adornment that are impressing collectors. The classic look of camphor glass has been bringing renewed excitement to the world of jewelry. The beginnings of camphor glass jewelry started with rock crystal in the 17th century. In an effort to show one’s loyalty in Stuart England, rock crystals (also known as Stuart crystals) were worn as jewelry. They showed allegiance to a monarch and later in the Victorian era, these crystals were found to be acceptable pieces of mourning jewelry, often worn to recognize and memorialize the passing of a loved one. In the 1800s and early 1900s, rock crystals found their

place at the center of fine jewelry designs the world over. Rock crystals were used in the 19th Century on necklaces, bracelets, rings, pendants, and brooches. Important French jewelers like Cartier, Boucheron, and Fouquet used rock crystals in their 1920s era jewelry designs. However, carved crystals left an unclear and cloudy look that was growing in popularity. Since carving crystal was a daunting task, artisans and glass makers tried to imitate the look by experimenting with other glass types. Their experiments led to camphor glass. Easy to mass produce, camphor glass became a welcomed addition to the host of materials used in jewelry making. Camphor glass makers tried to imitate rock crystal. How did they do it? Camphor glass is achieved by treating clear glass with hydrofluoric acid vapors to get a frosted finish. This frosted or cloudy finish was a desired look, and today, it is making a big come back in the jewelry collecting world. The word “camphor” refers to the resin extracted from camphor trees and the exotic nature of the jewelry pieces were of interest to Art Deco socialites and flappers alike. Camphor glass pieces have a cloudy transparency. Most pieces of camphor glass jewelry feature a central star design in the glass. A rectangular or square piece of camphor glass would be traditionally set in a silver plated, sterling silver, or white gold filigree setting with a central diamond placed to attract the eye. The camphor glass was cloudy yet attractive and the diamond was clear and sparkling giving the piece of jewelry an interesting and contrasting appearance. The addition of the small diamond recalled cameos which also added a tiny diamond to the design, but the glass offered a more contemporary look. Hazleton history in the style of an old fashioned Sunday paper supplement By Carl Christopher

Hazleton's Last Train Station The three photos show Hazleton’s last and finest train station just after it opened in 1907, its newsstand in 1921 and as it appeared around 1950. After the new station at Church and Mine streets went into service in December 1907, the city’s original depot at Mine and Wyoming ceased operations. At the time, both the Pennsylvania Railroad and Lehigh Valley Railroad were running trains to and from Hazleton. Just a couple of months before the new station opened, the Plain Speaker reported that riders were incensed when the LVRR eliminated a late train, meaning that the last train for the big cities A passenger car waits outside the would leave at 4:05 p.m. The Speaker predicted that would mean Hazleton train station in the 1940s. more passengers for the Pennsylvania, which had a train leaving at 5:59 p .m. for Pottsville, Reading, Philadelphia and other eastern cities. The LVRR’s weekday schedule had changed a bit by 1912, when travelers could go from Hazleton to Philadelphia in 3 hours and 7 minutes and New York in 4 hours and 38 minutes. A morning train leaving Hazleton would stop in Stockton, Freeland, Drifton, Jeddo and Ashmore before heading to Mauch Chunk. Weekday trains for the big cities left Hazleton at 6:28 a.m., 8:52 a.m., 12:11 p.m. and 5:05 p.m. There also were local trains. The ornate station was demolished to make way for a parking lot in 1963, the same year New York City’s iconic Pennsylvania Station fell to the wrecking ball.

Chamber Chatter with Mary Malone, President — The Heart Of Company Is It's Employees We infuse the bland color of a winter landscape with the beauty and color of hearts as we celebrate Valentine’s Day in February. This bring to mind the image of the heart being a center force in our bodies as well as in organizations, companies and our community. The heart image represents the people, for they are the lifeblood and muscle that make these entities work. The Chamber understands that and one of our kick off events each year is our annual Job Fair scheduled for March 21st at the Laurel Mall. “Great vision without great people is irrelevant”. Jim Collins, Lecturer and Author of Good to Great noted. This is impactful statement that the chamber embraces for all of our members regardless of the size. That is why we work collaboratively with all of our partners from both sids of the equation, employers and employees, to make the Job Fair a win win situation. Success of any Chamber events is connected to the environment or location. This major event has been hosted at the Laurel Mall for last few years. The Laurel Mall, a longtime chamber member, provides a fantastic location for both the employers showcasing at the event and those from general public that are interested in attending. The four wings of the mall are dynamic with booths manned by over 60 different employers in the area. The ability to see what the companies do and job openings they have to offer. Some of the employers participating in the event also do on the spot interviews that day. The

Mall location also provides the ability for public transportation. We acknowledge and want to thank the Hazleton Public Transport for this key service. The Chamber also partners with PA Career link team in weeks leading up the the event to prepare any potential job seekers or future employees. Resume workshop as well as interview tips and presenting yourself for success are just some of the offerings before the actual event. The Chamber and committee also work with local high schools and community colleges to let their students know the event is upcoming is another important aspect, We relay on our media partners to spread the word about the event and encourage folks to come out that day. The Stepcrew To Bring Irish Step Dancing To The F.m. Kirby Center For The Performing Arts On March 13 WILKES-BARRE, PA – Virtuosic Irish step dancers The StepCrew are coming to the F.M. Kirby Center for the Performing Arts on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024, as part of the F.M. Kirby Center’s Signature Series presented by Geisinger and media partner WNEP. About The StepCrew Take Nathan and Jon Pilatzke, two brothers from rural Ontario who haphazardly get started in Canadian Stepdancing and Fiddling as young children. The two boys, like a surprisingly high amount of other Canadian children, spend their summer weekends travelling around Ontario competing in Fiddle and Stepdance festivals. Cut to years later – Nathan and Jon pursue their art forms into a professional career. It is in this forum that they encounter The Chieftains lead dancer Cara Butler, a multi-time Irish Stepdancing champion and the three friends unknowingly and unwittingly create the core,

both physically and conceptually, for a new dance production aptly titled The StepCrew. It is this type of connection and familiarity that are the backbone of The StepCrew – other dancers and musicians in the show traceable like branches of a tree back to its trunk. However, the mission of this troupe involves much more than simply the gathering of extremely talented friends. The StepCrew is a completely original and virtuosic display of three styles of percussive dance – Irish Stepdancing, Ottawa Valley Stepdancing, and Tap – in a fully realized theatrical setting. This mission could not be clearer as the curtain rises to a short taste of each style in its traditional form, only to be followed by a bolt to the senses resulting in the full company dancing a uniform style – a style which Jean Butler of Riverdance fame could only describe as “a unique and seamless blend of all three”. From there this amazing company take you on a journey from a house party in the back kitchen of an old Irish cottage, to a lamp lit sidewalk in New York City, to a French Canadian lumbercamp in Quebec, using nothing more than their feet. Where it is inarguable that The StepCrew is a celebration of dance, one cannot deny

the musical abilities of the instrumentalists – two of the dancers themselves being noted and champion Canadian fiddlers. One of the easiest to check and most overlooked aspects of keeping your pet healthy, is a healthy mouth. If you haven't done so recently (and don't feel bad if you haven't, most people don't), pick up a lip and look at your pet's back teeth in a well lit area. Large chunks of brown tartar, red, eroding gums, and bad breath are all easily recognizable signs of an unhealthy mouth. Most people seems to think, that bad teeth is a problem that is limited to the mouth. Unfortunately, this just isn't true. Bad teeth frequently cause liver trouble, kidney trouble, and heart trouble in animals. I have cured a number of heart mummers in dogs and kidney problems in cats simple by cleaning their teeth and treating with antibiotics. More importantly, bad teeth cause pain in animals the same as they do for people. Dogs and cats are much more tolerant of mouth pain, then we humans. Just because your animal is eating, doesn't mean that everything is O.K. If you notice signs of bad teeth, this is also an indication that your pet is in pain. Black History Month Special

George Crowe by Rev. Connell McHugh One of the most interesting athletes, in my opinion, from the 1940s until the 1960s and in the years following his retirement was George Crowe who played in the Major Leagues from 19521961 and also played with top basketball teams, stood up for his rights as a black man and the rights of other black people and lived about a third of his life as a semi hermit. George Crowe was born in Whiteland, Indiana on March 22, 1921 and died January 18, 2011. Crowe grew up on a farm which he worked and graduated from Franklin High School and Indiana Central College, now the University of Indianapolis. In high school, Crowe’s favorite sport was basketball, and he always thought that he was better at basketball than baseball. George Crowe became Indiana’s first “Mr. Basketball” in 1939, an award that still is given annually. Crowe broke the color line by becoming the first black player on his team which he led to the State finals. Indiana was a Ku Klux Klan stronghold in the early part of the 20th century. A newspaper poll had fans vote for the best player in basketball for the state and George Crowe won in a landslide. After graduating from high school, George Crowe was a four year starter on Indiana Central College, a team which won 30 consecutive games in the 1941-1942 season. He was also the College’s starting first baseman on the College team. After graduation, Crowe served in

the Army. At Camp Lee, Virginia, Crowe starred in baseball and basketball on Army teams but requested a transfer because of the use of insulting racial language by a white colonel. He received a transfer to Fort Hood, Texas where he met his future wife, Yvonne, a white woman. They married in 1946 and had two daughters, Adrienne and Pamela. One evening Goerge and his wife went to a movie in his hometown and were told that blacks had to sit in the balcony. Crowe refused to do so and the usher backed off. The theater changed its policy within a week and black people were allowed to sit anywhere in it. George Crowe got to know Jackie Robinson well. He was a teammate of Robinson on the Los Angeles Red Devils Basketball team in 1947 and also played on Robinson’s barnstorming basketball teams. Jackie Robinson had a great respect for George Crowe and felt he was the most articulate spokesman for black athletes. Crowe had a successful pro basketball career averaging between 10 and 14 points a game in the seasons he played. Among the teams Crowe played for was the famous New York Rens when they lost to the Minneapolis Lakers led by George Mikan, the NBA’s first superstar, 75-71. While Crowe preferred basketball to baseball, there was little financial security in basketball at that time which led him to choose a career in baseball. With Jackie Robinson breaking the

color line in baseball, Crowe was given the hope of someday playing in the Major Leagues. The Boston Braves which later located in Milwaukee and Atlanta, signed Crowe who had excellent seasons in the Minor Leagues. In 1950, Crowe won the Eastern League batting title, hitting at a .353 clip and led the League in hits and runs scored. He was the MVP of the League. He also led the Triple A American Association with 119 RBIs in 1951 which led to a promotion to the Boston Braves. Crowe was 28 when he began playing for the Braves and batted .258 for Boston with 4 homeruns among his hits in 217 at bats. George Crowe’s problem throughout his career was that he always played behind the best first basemen of the era. With the Braves, he played behind Joe Adcock, with Cincinnati behind Ted Kluzewski and with St. Louis, Crowe backed up Stan Musial who switched from the outfield to first base in his final years. When opportunity arose, Crowe proved he could hit. In 1955 when Joe Adcock had his arm broken by a Jim Hearn pitch, Crowe got 303 at bats and hit .281 with 15 homeruns. In 1957 with Cincinnati when Crowe got his chance to be a regular everyday player due to Ted Kluzewski being injured for basically the entire season, Crowe posted his best year hitting .271 with 31 homeruns and 92 RBIs in 494 at bats.

Panorama Community Magazine When he was traded to the Cardinals in 1959, Crowe was an effective pinch hitter. He slugged 4 pinch hit homeruns in both 1958 and 1959. When he finished his career in 1961, he was the all-time leader with 14 pinch hit homers, a mark later broken. Crowe concluded his career with a .270 batting average and a .466 slugging percentage. He was selected to one All-Star game in 1958. After Jackie Robinson’s retirement in 1956, George Crowe was the recognized leader of African American baseball players including ones not on his own team. Crowe always opposed racism and was respected by both black and white players. He was a mentor to such players as Curt Flood, Hall of Fame pitcher Bob Gibson and star first baseman Bill White who became a Yankee broadcaster and American League President. Catcher and well known broadcaster, Tim McCarver, credited Crowe with helping him become one of the better hitting catchers. Bill White had high praise for Crowe. While with the Cardinals, Crowe led the team in integrating restaurants in Florida during Spring Training. Crowe had the intelligence to be a Major League manager. Unfortunately he was never offered such a position. Crowe once was considered for a position as assistant to the Baseball Commissioner but the position was given to Monte Irvin. Throughout his life. Crowe suffered the indignities of segregation. Crowe eventually was divorced and after a brief teaching career, retired to live at the base of the Catskill Mountains near Lake Eddy, New York where he lived a solitary life for many years growing his own food and fishing and hunting. He became a dropout from society and lived in a log cabin that he called “The Jackass Inn”. Though labeled as a hermit, Crowe kept in touch with family members and would welcome any reporter who came to his remote area cabin. Crowe lived in the mountains for more than 30 years. He felt his lifestyle guaranteed that he was not anyone’s slave. Crowe finally consented to live with his daughter, Adrienne in Sacramento in 2002. He lived with her until 2008 when he suffered two strokes and then had to move to an Assisted Living facility near his daughter’s home. Before the strokes, Crowe still drove a car and swam for an hour three days a week at a local gym. On the anniversary of his 100th birthday, he was honored by the U.S.Senate. Crowe was elected to the Indiana Basketball

Hall of Fame in 1972 and the Baseball Hall of Fame of the same state in 2004. The University of Indianapolis named a dormitory after Crowe and his brother who was an excellent basketball coach. George Crowe appears on Topps cards in 8 different years but not on any Bowman ones. The only real expensive card of Crowe is the 1952 high numbered one of the iconic Topps set which goes for $300 or more in Excellent to Mint condition. The 1953 Topps card is about $30 in a similar condition. The 1956 and 1957 cards of Crowe run around $10 $15 in Nice condition. The 1958 through 1961 cards of Crowe basically cost under $10, not much to pay for a real historical figure and man of character. Sweet Heat Barbeque Wild Turkey Bites Ingredients: • 1 boneless, skinless turkey or chicken breast, approximately 2 pounds, cut into 1-inch pieces • 1 tablespoon chili powder • 1 teaspoon paprika • 1 teaspoon cayenne pepper • 1/2 teaspoon garlic salt • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper • 1 tablespoon loosely-packed light brown sugar • 1 package center-cut bacon, cut in half • Sliced green onions • Ranch dressing • Chef’s Choice or Butcher’s Blend Bear Mountain BBQ Pellets

• 1/2 cup sweet barbecue sauce • 2 tablespoons buffalo sauce • 1 tablespoon minced garlic Directions: 1. Preheat grill to 400 degrees F. 2. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper. 3. Place 1-inch turkey pieces into a medium size bowl. Sprinkle chili powder, paprika, cayenne, garlic salt, black pepper and brown sugar over top. Mix well. 4. Wrap half a slice of bacon around each turkey piece. Secure with a toothpick and place them onto the parchment paper. 5. Place the baking sheet into your preheated grill and bake for 25 minutes. Meanwhile, combine the barbecue sauce, buffalo sauce and garlic in a small bowl. Brush the turkey pieces halfway through cooking. Brush another layer of sauce five minutes before the cook time is over. Cook until the turkey pieces reach 165 degrees F. 6. Garnish with sliced green onions and serve with ranch dressing for dipping.

Directions: 1. Preheat pellet grill to 350 degrees F. 2. In large bowl, combine 1 cup cheddar, gruyere, cream cheese, Dijon mustard, Hidden Valley Ranch seasoning, beer and 1 tablespoon green onions. Mix evenly. 3. Cut biscuits in half. Roll each half into a ball, then slice an X across top. 4. Boil 2 cups water in medium saucepan. Once boiling, add baking soda and mix immediately. 5. Add biscuits to grill in batches and cook until puffy, approximately 1 minute. Remove and transfer to skillet, forming ring along inside edge. 6. Brush biscuits with egg wash. Sprinkle with salt. 7. Transfer dip to center of skillet. Sprinkle with remaining cheddar. Beer Cheese Dip 8. Smoke until biscuits are golden and dip is bubbly, 30-35 minutes. Ingredients: 9. MONEY MATTERS SECTION How Can Business Owners Plan For An Exit? If you’re a business owner, you always have a lot to do and a lot to think about. But have you put much thought into how you’ll eventually leave it all behind? Even if you’re a few years away from that day, it’s a good idea to create an exit strategy. If you’re like most other owners, most of your net worth may well be tied up in your business — so how you exit that business can have a big impact on your finances and your retirement. As you begin the exit strategy process, you’ll need to examine some basic questions, such as how much you want for your business and how much it’s worth. But you’ll especially need to plan for the mechanics of your exit — that is, just how you’re going to sell or transfer ownership of it. Essentially, you have three main

options: • Internal sale or transfer – You could sell or transfer your business to someone affiliated with the company, such as a family member, business partner or even a group of employees. The advantages of this method are that you’ll have greater control over the timing of your exit, and you’ll be able to provide greater continuity for your employees, clients and suppliers. One potential disadvantage is that your net sales proceeds may be less than what you’d get from selling the business to an unrelated third party. • External sale or transfer – The biggest benefit of selling or transferring your business to an unrelated third party is that you can potentially maximize your net sales proceeds. But you’ll need to consider some tradeoffs, too. For one thing, a sale to an outside

Taxes are not due until April 15, 2024. If you feel that you are going to owe, you are probably inclined to go to your preparer “late,” in late March or the first two weeks of April. This does not benefit you! Preparing your taxes as soon as you have all your documents is always in your best interest. If you have a refund, it expedites the government holding your money. If the IRS chooses to request additional information for your filing, the sooner you file, the sooner they ask and we can resolve their issue. Taxpayers who owe money do not have to pay it until April 15, 2024. However, if you go to your preparer as soon you have your documents, then you know how much you need to pay in April. Also, we can help you determine that if there is a way to not have you owe the government at tax time. The earlier we talk the sooner that you should not be in owing for 2024. Partnerships and S Corp Returns are due March 15, even though they have no tax debt. Their income flows to the individual owner’s tax return for taxes due. However, in order to accomplish that, businesses need to have their records finished for the year ASAP and get them to the preparer. 1120 Corp Returns are due Apr 15, and do have a potential tax debt. My Challenge For You This Year by Dr. Candice Dutko, DNP There are numerous fitness/health challenges out there, especially this time of year. You might come across a “30 days of squats challenge,” a “daily plank challenge,” or a “30 day clean eating challenge.” While these challenges aren’t completely terrible in and of themselves (I generally wouldn’t recommend them), I have a more worthwhile challenge for you. My challenge for you this year is to build as much muscle as possible. Before anyone gets concerned, you will not get bulky. That takes years of dedicated effort and requires super tight control of your nutrition…more than the everyday person is typically willing to devote themselves to. Why the challenge of building muscle? While there may be certain aesthetic results, the challenge is ultimately more about supporting your overall health and longevity. Those who focus on building muscle will likely have incorporated resistance/strength training into their fitness routine. In doing so, their efforts to build muscle will also be simultaneously strengthening their bones. According to the Bone Health & Osteoporosis Foundation, “one in two women and up to one in four men will break a bone in their lifetime due to osteoporosis.” Hands down, strength training is one of the best strategies you could use to strengthen your bones. Too many people focus on the here and now. I’d like to encourage you to consider the life you desire when you are 60 years old and beyond. As a nurse, I have unfortunately seen a broken bone in the aged population mean the beginning of the end. For many, it means a loss of independence. Sometimes

it means a decline in overall health. Having limited mobility means more inactivity which increases your chances for other health complications such as pneumonia, pressure ulcers, poor blood sugar management, and a decrease in cognition. While you might not be able to 100% prevent an osteoporosisrelated broken bone, if you have put in the time with strength training, you will be better able to navigate the recovery from it compared to your peers who have not. If you focus on building muscle, it will mean that you are putting in the effort to fuel your body well to support muscle growth. Sadly, too many people take the approach of eating minimally in an effort to accomplish their fat loss goals. Building muscle requires adequate calories. You can’t starve your way to muscle growth. Even more importantly, it means you have to focus on protein intake, something many people are typically undereating. I like to summarize it this way to my clients: feed your muscles. If you are already working hard in the gym to grow your muscles and you aren’t seeing the results you want, this could be for a number of reasons, but one reason might be that you aren’t eating enough. A focus on muscle growth often means increased fat loss. Oftentimes, people believe that what they want is weight loss when what they really desire is fat loss. Having more muscle means you have raised your basal metabolic rate which is the number of calories you burn at rest. When many people begin a weight loss journey, they often kill themselves with cardio thinking that they will

focus on muscle building when they have lost their desired weight. In reality, having more muscle mass will actually accelerate their fat loss. This is not to say that one shouldn’t do cardio; it is important for people to do for health purposes. Also, keep doing it if you enjoy it! However, the best bang for your buck for fat loss happens with strength training. Focusing on muscle growth means you will be continually challenging yourself. Challenging yourself continually in the gym has great carryover to your everyday life. Life is full of challenges and the gym is a great place to practice the skills that will help you navigate them. For example, the skills of doing the work when you don’t feel like it, challenging yourself to do just a little bit more, the practice of getting outside your comfort zone when doing something new, and aligning habits to achieve a goal. We don’t grow when things are easy. We grow through the challenges we face and by overcoming them. Lastly, in a society that is very focused on material “things” that anyone for the most part can purchase, muscles are one of those that are completely earned by the individual who possesses them. When you see someone who has some muscle definition, it’s often an indicator that they care about their own health and their impact on those around them, they have prioritized self-care, and to a degree have some level of discipline in their lives. In conclusion, focusing on muscle growth will help you become not only more resilient physically, but mentally as well. Generally speaking, no one will ever regret the time spent getting stronger. Rather, they will regret not taking the time to prioritize their health. Be strong. Be confident. The Latest on Smoking by Stephen Schleicher, MD

Until recently I associated National Geographic magazine with animals, ethnic cultures, and faraway places. No longer. To this mix I now add medical reporting, most of which is extremely well done. A prime example is a recent article titled: “Here's what happens to your body when you quit smoking”. Pointed out is the fact that half a million Americans die from smoking-related causes and 16 million Americans are living with smoking-related ailments. So, what happens when you quit smoking? The article’s subtitles follow: 1) Improved heart rate and breathing. Within hours of quitting, one’s heart rate decreases and elevated levels of carbon monoxide in the blood decrease to normal within a few days. Over the course of weeks lung function improves and coughing diminishes. Senses of smell and taste are enhanced. 2) Sharp reduction in risk for heart attack or stroke. The article points out that 10 years after smoking the risk of dying from a heart attack drops by over 60%. 3) Cancer risk drops after a decade. To quote from the article: “After 10 years, the risk for death from lung cancer is half the risk of current smoker….. It’s best if you quit smoking at an earlier age but even if people aren’t able to quit until they are older, the benefits are still very, very substantial.” 4) Progression of smoking-related conditions slows. To again quote from the article:” For people who are living with smoking-related chronic health conditions, such as cancer, heart disease, or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), quitting can slow the progression of disease, while also improving the odds of survival.” The article notes that smoking is one of the hardest addictions to break. If you do smoke please read the bullet points. And please try hard to quit. Ending on an optimistic note, a study cited by the American Heart Association concludes that “the number of American teens who smoke or have even tried smoking has dropped dramatically compared to a generation ago, with less than 1% now saying they light up cigarettes daily.” Fantastic news.

Frozen Shoulder

There are a variety of structures that work together to allow the shoulder to perform such complex movements. There can be issues such as tears or inflammation that can impair the function of the joint. One such problem often seen in orthopedics is adhesive capsulitis, also known as a frozen shoulder. Previous injuries or conditions where the shoulder was immobilized for an extended period may make a person more likely to be diagnosed with adhesive capsulitis. A patient may notice increasing pain, stiffness, and a decreased joint range of motion. People will say to me, “I want to retire, so I could lose weight, spend more time with my family, and work on my health.” Or they will say, “I want to work less hours at my demanding job so that I could spend more time with my family, lose weight and work on my health.” So I watch. They retire or work less, but many do not lose weight, work on their health, or spend more time with their family. Here is what is the underlying issue—this could change your life. If people are honest with themselves, they lack the strength to gradually build

personal disciplines over time. Delayed gratification means I will work hard now, for future greater rewards. But we can still have the balance to lose weight, work on our health, and spending more time with family while we are working. We fool ourselves , we don’t have to retire or cut back on our job to do this. And to have greater disciplines in life is not just to try harder. That is the devil telling you that. As you read this, if you are working 80 hours a week, and not on your cell phone watching social media or playing video games, and you are burnt out; then you need to achieve balance in your life. Stay disciplined, finish the task you are involved in, and then once that is accomplished, then you could relax with your family more. The goal here is to watch our thoughts. How you think affects your productivity at your job, and your health. Work hard, spend every minute you can with God to get you to have the discipline to maximize your relationship with your loved ones. Time alone with them is not the issue. You can spend less time with family, but make it laughter, loving, meaningful times. Smith Health Care February Happenings Everyone here at Smith Health Care is bracing for the winter weather. February is a short month but can feel long with the cold winter days. Snow is falling and residents are enjoying fellowship and fun of being with each other reminiscing of past snow tales of the many winter stories they share. Our residents are joining in morning exercise daily, striving to maintain mobility and minimize the aches and pains brought on by the changes in the barometer. Our residents continue to enjoy weekly Bingo games, card club, afternoon hot cocoa and cookies and various activities. Music entertainment by George Rittenhouse and Jim Weiss is always a big hit! Weekly Sunday worship and monthly bible study continues through the winter months. February’s very busy with Mardi Gras and the start of Lent. We will be kicking the month off with George Rittenhouse performing on Sunday Feb. 11th then Fat Tuesday Celebrations on the 12th. Valentine’s Day and Ash Wednesday combine to be a busy day on the 14th. Residents will be offered ashes by St. Jude Church, and they will have a Strawberry Shortcake social. Monday Feb. 19th, Presidents Day will be celebrated with a Cherry Pie and ice cream social. All special programs are held in the Auditorium and Family and friends are always welcome to join in. Lastly, we at Smith Health Care want to again thank the American Legion Post 781 for their generous Christmas gifts given to all, of our Veterans. The care packages were so very thoughtful and much appreciated.

How do I know when it is time to have my hearing checked?

Screening for hearing loss is not typically part of a routine health check. It is very important to let your doctor know if you have been noticing difficulty hearing. Your provider can recommend an audiologist who can perform an audiological evaluation. One of the most common signs that it might be a good idea to have your hearing checked is difficulty understanding other people, especially if there is noise in the environment. Tire Inflation Fill Your Tires With Nitrogen? By Thomas R. Buff Motorists are well aware of the fact that tires do need air from time to time. Tire inflation is a critical area when it comes to suspension, handling, traction and braking. We also cannot forget that inflation is also a major factor concerning tire wear. We all want our tires to last as long as possible. So when our tires need air we go to the local gas station or auto shop and fill them with air or nitrogen. Why would we fill our tires with Nitrogen? Motorists have been using plain old oxygen, or simply air since the motor vehicle has used pneumatic (air) tires why change now? Although tire pressure monitoring systems have now become standard on cars, a National Highway Transportation Safety Administration study found that only 57 percent of vehicles with monitoring systems had the correct pressure. Tire pressure is one of the most neglected safety items when it comes to maintenance. Small leaks in the tire can cause problems with

steering, handling and even worse catastrophic failure. Nitrogen can help to keep inflation pressures within the proper ranges. Some local tire shops are beginning to offer nitrogen tire inflation, thus changing the way we use to fill our tires. Tire experts claim that air, which is about one fifth oxygen, causes oxidation and corrosion. Oxygen is a very reactive element that when mixed with moisture can cause under inflation and deterioration of both the rubber compounds in the tire and the rim itself. They also claim that the minute oxygen molecules seep out of tires more easily causing a gradual loss of tire pressure. Experts in the tire industry indicate that oxidative aging is one of the primary causes of decreases in tire and rim life. Aluminum rims are most susceptible to rim deterioration and oxidation. Nitrogen is a dry, inert gas that has been used for many years to inflate an airplane, military, and racecar tires. This

gas has layer molecules than oxygen thus there is less chance of leakage. Tests have shown that if tires are inflated with nitrogen, there is a significant reduction in tire failure due to under inflation thus tires last longer. The average pressure loss in an average tire is 2psi a month due to a molecules passing through the sidewalk. It is claimed that by using nitrogen wheel surfaces stay smooth and clean, because it doesn’t cause rust or corrosion. Nitrogen will not degrade the rubber seal in the valve core and will not cause deterioration of the tires rubber. It may take six months to lose 2psi with nitrogen compared to the one loss in tires filled with air. One of the most important reasons for using nitrogen in tires comes from the racecar industry. Water vapor absorbs and holds heat. When changes from liquid to vapor occur, water expands in volume. As a result tires inflated with wet air tend to run hotter and fluctuate in pressure due to the change in air molecules from liquid to vapor and back. Tires inflated with nitrogen have very little moisture inside so the tire runs cooler and thus becomes safer. This is why racecars utilize nitrogen in place of air. So if you want to minimize the loss of air pressure and thus keep your tires doing the job they are designed to do, that is, keep your vehicle on the road, consider the new alternative to plain old air. Nitrogen is a safe and effective way to maintain tire and rim life. Happy Motoring and have a safe and Happy 2024!

34 Years of Innovation at SJM Auto Sales & Repair In January SJM Auto Sales and Repair installed the MoonWalk Mixing system by PPG. SJM is the first in the area to use this state-of-the-art system. This new system is keeping with their commitment to the newest technology. In 2009, they were the first in the area to use water based environmentally friendly paint. The MoonWalk System The MoonWalk system uses a barcode scanner to identify the colors of paint that are needed. It then mixes the paints to the exact specifications, and it dispenses them into a container that is ready to be used. The system is also equipped with a label printer so that the labels can be printed automatically. The system has a number of advantages over traditional paint mixing methods. First, it is much more accurate. The system can mix paints to within a tolerance of 0.01%, which is much better than the human eye can see. This means that the colors will be perfectly matched. The system can mix a batch of paint in just a few minutes which is much faster than traditional methods. This means that collision repair centers can get their customers' cars back on the road more quickly. The MoonWalk system is much cleaner. The system does not produce any waste, and it does not create any fumes. This means that collision repair centers can create a cleaner and safer work environment for their employees. Overall, the MoonWalk system is a major advancement in paint mixing technology. It is more accurate, faster, and cleaner than traditional methods. 4 Revved-Up Resolutions To Make In 2024

(BPT) - When it comes to New Year's resolutions, there are some "classics," such as exercising more, budgeting better, or learning a new skill. But what about when it comes to our vehicles? According to new data from Hankook Tire's Gauge Index Survey, many Americans are considering automotive goals for the new year: 79% said they would be likely to set a resolution about vehicle ownership, and another 51% indicated they would set one about their driving habits. Here are some revved up resolutions to consider for the new year and beyond: Stay on top of maintenance. For those planning to set a goal related to vehicle ownership, the top resolution is to stay on top of maintenance (26%). There are a few easy ways to help avoid speeding past routine maintenance. For example, make a note to check your tires at least once a week, ensuring that they are both properly inflated

Another 20% are interested in learning more about different types of vehicles, even if that doesn't mean getting behind the wheel of one. Regardless of what resolution you plan to set in 2024, it is always a good idea to use the changing of the calendar as a chance to make sure you are up-to-date on all vehicle maintenance, registrations, and insurance to ensure a smooth drive into the new year.

Tips To Protect Your Home During Extreme Cold Weather

Extreme cold weather can be hard on both you and your home. Here are some tips to put into practice when freezing weather, snow, and ice hit your area. HOW TO PREVENT FROZEN PIPES: • Protect your pipes we all know water expands as it freezes. Disconnect and drain garden hoses. • Turn off water to outside faucets, and open valves. • Turn off sprinkler system and blow compressed air through the lines to drain them. • Close or cover foundation vents under house and windows to basement and garage doors. Insulate exposed pipes (both hot and cold) under house with foam pipe insulation. • Open cabinet doors under sinks. Drip hot and cold faucets in kitchen and bath. Drip single control faucet with lever set in middle. HOW TO DEAL WITH FROZEN PIPES: • Locate water main cut-off valve, and have cut-off key handy. • Don’t forget to check on pipes to your washing machine in the laundry room. • Use a hair dryer, heat lamp, electric heat tape, or a portable space heater to thaw frozen pipes that have not burst. • Keep the faucet open when thawing frozen pipes to allow water to begin flowing through. • After the weather has warmed above freezing and any frozen pipes have thawed, turn off dripping faucets and monitor your water meter to check for unseen leaks. Call a professional to repair any pipes in your home that are leaking.

• Inspect the heat exchanger for cracks, install a clean air filter, and check the thermostat to see if it’s working properly. • Inspect fireplaces and chimneys before using, and have them cleaned if needed. • Cover or remove any window air conditioners. • Make sure outdoor heat pump units are free of ice and snow and debris that may blow into unit. • If you heat with propane or fuel oil, make sure the tank is full. • Insulate electrical outlets and switches on exterior walls. Caulk any cracks or holes on the outside of your house. • Repair or replace weather stripping and thresholds around doors and windows. • Run ceiling fans on low in reverse (clockwise when looking up) to circulate warm air.
