National Debt Then & Now

In this month's short article, I revisit a topic I originally covered in the June 2016 issue. It appears to be more relevant in June 2024 than it was eight years ago, before the current office holder or past president took office.

That subject is the national debt, having reviewed my comments from the previous article it appears that the problem has gotten worse without any solution from either side in the political world. Nor to my understanding any desire or attempt to correct this situation.

The national debt in 2016 was approximately 19 trillion dollars. Today it is over 34 trillion dollars. That is an increase of 15 trillion dollars, with both sides sharing nearly equal responsibility.

It is crucial to acknowledge that responsibility for this issue is shared among all branches of government, including the executive and Congress. However, I assign most of the responsibility to the House of Representatives, as they in accordance with the Constitution have the power of the purse.

You may ask, "Is the national debt a problem?" The easy answer is yes, it is a significant issue today.

As of April 2024, the national debt

was nearing 35 trillion dollars which is larger than any time since the end of WWII, it is also projected to nearly triple over the next 30 years. The current interest is 624 billion on the debt which is approximately 16% of total federal spending in 2024. Would any of us want to consider the possibility that 16% of our income is being allocated solely to paying interest on debts that are continuing to grow, without any measures being taken to stop?

The good news is that there are plenty of solutions to choose from. The Peter Peterson Foundation's Solutions Initiative brought together policy organizations from across the political spectrum to develop a long-term fiscal plan. These solutions cover budget reform, national security spending, and improving our tax system.

Addressing the national debt is an essential part of securing America’s economic future. I want to make it clear that I do not support the idea of continually increasing our National Debt just so the government can keep spending without control. However, I do recognize that not all public spending is necessarily bad. There are certain things that only the government can do, such as providing effective defense of our homeland, building highways, schools,

Weddings & More Glossy Pullout Inside!

airports, and other infrastructure, as well as implementing programs that benefit all citizens. These initiatives need to be funded, and as they grow, we will either need to increase taxes for “all” or borrow money.

If there is one thing to take away from this very complex subject, it is this; you will know when someone says that other countries own us… it is untrue, as we own ourselves.

Owned and operated by the Mattioli/ Igdalsky Families, Pocono Raceway occupies a special spot nestled in the Pocono Mountains and brings an energy unparalleled in modern sport.

The Fan Zone at Pocono has a mix of old-fashioned charm and modern mastery. The old charm includes a free carnival, playgrounds, magicians, funnel cakes, and a kid’s

Hazleton Art League — A Dramatic Transformation

The Hazleton Art League (HAL) has been a cultural mainstay in Hazleton for over 75 years. It began as a small collective of forward-thinking individuals who were determined to bring teaching and appreciation of the Arts to the local people. From those humble beginnings, HAL has evolved into a driving force for the revitalization of downtown Hazleton.

At the height of the pandemic, the Art League moved from the East Broad Street location that it had called home since 1950 to a renovated bank building up the street, now known as the Hayden Family Center for the Arts. The transformation has been dramatic. With expanded gallery space, larger studios and a commercial kitchen, the Art League can serve Hazleton’s growing population by hosting exhibitions, events, and art classes on a greater scale.

Every first Friday of the month (except in January) the Art League opens a new exhibition to the public. The following Sunday is Coffee Talk, a forum where the artists talk about their work over coffee, tea, and pastries. A variety of musical performances take place as well, ranging in styles from heavy metal punk to acoustic bluegrass.

Classes and workshops of various artforms are held at the Art League,

including drawing and painting, photography, digital art, macramé, open studio and more. Pottery and stained glass are favorite classes for many members. Children’s classes are also popular, especially our eightweek Summer Art Camp. Through the generosity of donations and grants, instruction is available at a lower cost to eligible families.

The Hayden Family Center for the Arts is not just the home of the Hazleton Art

League—it has become a community center for hosting cultural events and can be rented for celebrations, meetings, and team-building exercises. Hosts for these events have access to the commercial kitchen, which is organized to help culinary start-ups. There is always something interesting going on at the Hazleton Art League. For more information, go to www. hazletonartleague.org or call 570-4553333.

Old Prison, New Ideas: Exploring Eastern State Penitentiary

When you think of Philadelphia, what comes to mind? Visitors to the so-called City of Brotherly Love often take in sights like the Liberty Bell and Independence Hall or maybe enjoy a Philadelphia delicacy, a cheesesteak (whiz wit!). Of course, the Rocky Balboa statue is always a popular pilgrimage for Sly Stallone fans. But did you know that just a few blocks away from that statue and the art museum’s iconic “Rocky steps” sits the site of the world’s first penitentiary?

Eastern State Penitentiary was once the most famous and expensive prison in the world. Located in Philadelphia’s Fairmount neighborhood, this massive structure with a castle-like façade and 30-foot-high stone walls pioneered the large-scale use of solitary confinement in the early 19th century. Altogether, Eastern State housed approximately 85,000 people during its 142 years of operation including bank robber “Slick” Willie Sutton and “Scarface” Al Capone.

Today, Eastern State Penitentiary Historic Site stands in stabilized ruin as a museum interpreting the legacy of American criminal justice reform from the nation’s founding to the present day. This National Historic Landmark is open to visitors all year round. Interested in exploring Eastern State Penitentiary on your next trip to Philadelphia? Here’s what you can expect to experience. When you arrive, you'll get an mp3

player and headphones that will guide you through the penitentiary complex and explain the prison's history. “The Voices of Eastern State” audio tour is narrated by actor Steve Buscemi and features the voices of people who worked and lived at Eastern State when it was an active prison. The main audio tour route lasts about 40 minutes. Then, you can explore additional stops to learn more about special topics like escapes, sports, dining, medical care, and more.

The main audio tour route ends at partner exhibits The Big Graph and Prisons Today. Here, you can learn about the criminal justice system today. The Big Graph is a massive, threedimensional bar graph sculpture that illustrates the unprecedented growth in the United States’ incarceration rates since 1970. Prisons Today is an indoor, climate-controlled exhibit that sheds light on the impact of modern-day mass incarceration. Other popular exhibits at the historic site include the penitentiary’s historic synagogue, almost certainly the first built in an American prison and now restored to its appearance in 1959, as well as Al Capone’s Cell, a recreated cell designed to reflect how it likely appeared when Capone was incarcerated at Eastern State Penitentiary in 1929.

Eastern State is also home to an

award-winning artist installation program. As you walk through the historic cellblocks and yards, you’ll find 16 unique pieces of site-specific art that all address Eastern State’s primary themes – including issues of crime and justice, architectural history, and the site’s fascinating past. Finally, no trip to Eastern State Penitentiary would be complete without taking part in the museum’s Hands-On History program. Educators lead five to 20-minute tours that explore special topics and take visitors into spaces not otherwise open to the public like “Soup Alley” the prisoner dining halls or the penitentiary’s hospital wing. The schedule changes daily, so be sure to ask a staff member for details when you arrive.

Ready to plan your trip? Visit EasternState.org for the most up to date information including hours of operation, ticket prices, and special programs.

Visit the No. 9 Coal Mine & Museum

The No. 9 Coal Mine was first opened in 1855 by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company. A large vein of Anthracite coal, known as the Mammoth Vein, was the main focus of mining operations in the Panther Valley. Early mining operations in the area were located in the town of Summit Hill, just above Lansford. As the mines in Summit Hill encountered ever increasing levels of groundwater, other methods needed to be employed to reach the coal. The No. 9 Mine is driven at a much lower elevation than the mines in nearby Summit Hill. As the tunnel was being driven, it allowed groundwater to naturally run out from the mine portal without the need of pumps. The tunnel was driven into the mountain far enough to reach the Mammoth Vein by Christmas Day 1857. The following year the No. 9 Mine was contracted to produce 90,000 tons of Anthracite coal for the company. The No. 9 Mine operated from 1855 until June of

1972, making it the longest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine in the world.

The No. 9 Mine was left abandoned until a local group, committed to preserving the region’s coal mining heritage, took control of the property in 1992. This group is known as the Panther Creek Valley Foundation and now operates the No. 9 Mine as a museum. Restoration work on the mine began in 1995 and the first tours inside began in 2002. Visitors to the mine ride by rail 1,600 feet into the mountain before embarking on a 600 foot guided walking tour. Tourists can examine the original 700-foot-deep mine shaft, walk the “mule-way” where young men guided the mules between the different levels of the mine and see a miner’s hospital cut into solid rock. Outside on the grounds is the museum, housed in the No. 9 Mine’s original “Wash Shanty” constructed before the First World War. The museum houses

St. John The Baptist Church, Hazleton The Right Fit At Gino's Shoe Store

St. John the Baptist Polish National Catholic Church (PNCC) is an Apostolic, Sacramental, Non-Papal church based on Catholic traditions. The PNCC was established in response to the perceived discrimination and control exerted by the Roman Catholic Church over many communities in the United States during the early 1900s. Bishop Hodur and the founders of the PNCC wanted a church that would allow them to worship in their native language and have more say in the administration of their religious affairs.

On December 16, 1900 the decision was made to separate from the Roman Catholic Church. A few years later,

on September 29, 1907, Fr. Francis Hodur was consecrated Bishop by Dutch Old Catholic bishops in Utrecht, Holland (giving the PNCC Apostolic Succession). The church now has established parishes in Poland, Canada, and the U.S., including here in Hazleton where Masses are celebrated in English.

The Polish National Catholic Church follows a liturgical tradition that is similar to the Roman Catholic Church, including the celebration of the Mass and the sacraments. However, it differs in several key aspects. For example, the PNCC does not recognize the authority of the Pope. Instead, our church is governed by an elected committee of parishioners, with bishops and a General Synod making decisions collectively.

While the Church maintains a strong sense of Polish identity, we welcome all members regardless of ethnic, racial or social status. Many readers in the area are likely familiar with–and contribute to–our church, making our Christmas and Lenten pierogi sales a continuous success. Please feel free to join us for our weekly Mass on Saturday evening at 6:00 pm, or Sunday morning at 9:15 am.

On June 23, 2024 at 11:00 am, Prime Bishop Mikovsky and Rev. Janiec will be celebrating a special Mass in honor of our patron saint: St. John the Baptist. This will be immediately followed by a luncheon in our church’s social hall. Please stop by to meet our clergy and learn more about our parish.

Keeping with the great tradition of the summer movie, Hardcoal Baseball takes a look at local connections to iconic movies

Fear Strikes Out

Jimmy Piersall's story is indeed fascinating and carries a deep connection with Scranton and the broader Northeastern Pennsylvania (NEPA) region. His struggles with bipolar disorder were well-documented, and his career was marked by both triumphs and challenges. Playing for the Boston Red Sox farm team in 1948 at the old Scranton Ballpark laid the foundation for Piersall's journey in professional baseball. His battles with bipolar disorder, then known as manic depression, were depicted in the movie "Fear Strikes Out," which shed light on the personal challenges he faced while pursuing a career in baseball.

Throughout his career, Piersall encountered conflicts with teammates like Billy Martin and Mickey Mantle, as well as with umpires, fans, and management. Despite these challenges, he managed to have some stellar seasons, earning two Gold Glove Awards, making two All-Star appearances, and finishing in the top ten in MVP voting in 1953.

Beyond his baseball career, Piersall's connection with NEPA is deeply rooted. His marriage to Mary Teevan in 1949 in Scranton solidified his ties to the region. Mary herself had strong ties to NEPA, having graduated from Coughlin High School and St. Mary's Hospital School of Nursing in Wilkes-Barre.

His Real Field of Dreams

“I knew they’d send me back down, I

GOES TO THE MOVIES

couldn’t bear the thought of another year in the minors, so I decided to hang them up,”

Archibald “Moonlight” Graham said to Ray Kinsella in the movie “Field of Dreams”.

(As portrayed by Burt Lancaster and Kevin Costner).

In the movie, Ray Kinsella searched out Moonlight

Graham, who played one major league game but never got to bat. There was a real player named Archibald Graham who appeared in one game for the New York Giants in 1905. As with a lot of Hollywood productions, they took some liberties with the truth. Moonlight Graham did get sent back down and spent the last three years of his professional career playing for the Scranton Miners in the New York State League. He appeared in 385 games, collecting 428 hits for a .293 average. In 1906, Graham was an important part of the Scranton Miners championship team. Graham played at Athletic Park located on Providence Road. The stadium, which was built in 1894 and was torn down in the late 1930s, is now home to Scranton Memorial Field.

She Had A League of Her Own

In 1992, Columbia Pictures released the Movie “A League Of Their Own”. The movie starred Gina Davis, Lori Petty, Tom Hanks, and Madonna, and honored women’s professional baseball. In the fall of 1942, many minor league teams disbanded due to drafting baseballaged players into the military. Fearing that this trend would force the closing of Major League clubs, Philip Wrigley, the owner of the

Cubs and the chewing gum empire, began a search for possible options. By the spring of 1943, Wrigley and other businessmen formed the All-American Girls Baseball Professional Baseball League (AAGPBL). The league lasted until 1954. Ruth Williams Heverly from Nescopeck played in AAGPBL from 1947 to 1953. After graduating from Nescopeck High School, she went to East Stroudsburg University where she obtained a teaching degree and was a star athlete. In 1988, she was inducted into the East Stroudsburg Hall of Fame. In 1946, she attended a league tryout in Allentown; she was one of only two players (200 attended the tryout) to be picked for the league. She was assigned to the Fort Wayne Daisies. She was primarily a pitcher, finishing with an ERA of 2.19 and had a record 46 consecutive scoreless innings. She started teaching in 1947 and would not attend spring training, since she could not give up her teaching job. She married Leonard Heverly in 1953 and adopted a son Michael. “I believe in the Church of Baseball. I've tried all the major religions, and most of the minor ones.” That was the lead-off quote in the 1988 movie Bull Durham. Bull Durham was written by Ron Shelton and was loosely based

Minor league baseball has never been more popular, and a small amount of credit can be given to this movie that helped kick off its revival. Long before the movie and the fictional Crash Davis, George Alusik, a native of Ashley, played at Durham Athletic Park. Alusik played five seasons for the Detroit Tigers and the Kansas City A’s. Playing outfield and first base, Alusik had 23 homers and 93 RBIs in his career. In his time in the majors, he was the teammate of Al Kaline, Billy Martin, and Jim Bunning, to name a few. He spent parts of two seasons with the Durham Bulls and also played for the nearby Wilkes-Barre Barons. Foot pain: Shoes that are too tight or too loose can cause pain in the feet, ankles, and legs. This pain can be caused by pressure on the nerves, muscles, and tendons.

Injuries: - Shoes that don't fit well

can also lead to injuries, such as blisters, corns, and calluses. These injuries can be painful and can make it difficult to walk or run.

Long-term health issues: Wearing shoes that don't fit well can also lead to long-term health issues, such as arthritis and bunions. These conditions can be painful and can make it difficult to walk or stand.

In addition to the benefits listed above, wearing shoes that fit well can also help to improve your posture and balance. This can help to reduce your risk of falls and other injuries. Bags & Baskets Cornhole Tournament Fundraiser

What is this you ask? It is a benefit for Bob Wolfe! On February 19th this year, the Wolfe family received some life altering news that would forever change their lives, but none more than their loving father, husband, and brother, Bob who was diagnosed with brain cancer. His family: wife Denise, daughter Lindsay & boyfriend Paddy Gallagher, son Brady & his wife Samantha are hosting this benefit for him. All proceeds will benefit the Wolfe Family to help with all their expenses.

Bob is a lifelong resident of our community, with a quick witty sense of humor and he has chosen to fight this battle with courage and determination. Currently undergoing radiation treatments and a daily regimen of chemotherapy, Bob faces each day with hope and resilience. Bob worked 38 years as a Sportswriter, News and Community Editor at the Standard Speaker. In all that time, he never took a sick day! This man is not only a wonderful husband and father; he and Denise are expecting their first grandchild in October. He is a West Hazleton Native, graduating high school there. Additionally, he spent many years as a coach and the president

of the West Hazleton Little League.

The event is Saturday, June 8th beginning at Noon and takes place at TAP at Humboldt Beer Depot, 563 Can Do Expressway, Hazleton. Black Diamond Cornhole will be there hosting the Cornhole Tournament. You do not have to be a professional to enter. The cost is $60 per team and there is $1,000+ in cash prizes. Registration is at 11:00 a.m. but you can pre-register on the Scoreholio app. In addition, the community will also be able to enjoy live entertainment, games, food, and tricky tray raffles. You do not need to be present to win. This event is open to the public and fun for the whole family.

Cancer has picked the wrong family, and together with bags and baskets, they will beat this. Please find it in your hearts to come out and support Bob in the biggest

The Wolfe family is overwhelmed by what has happened, in a short amount of time, to Bob. They are more than grateful for the outpouring of support from Bob's friends, neighbors, and family. Any contributions, whether gift certificates for tricky trays or monetary donations are much appreciated as they continue to receive unplanned medical fees, specialized treatments, and travel expenses. For inquiries or donations, please contact the family at 570-926-7347 or paddygallagher126@gmail.com.

Uranium Glass: Antique Glass That Glows Green Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori

Many antique lovers ask me about glass of all types: Murano, Depression, EAPG, American Brilliant, Pyrex, and the list goes on. One of the most popular and exciting glass types for collectors is uranium glass. I like to call it “the green glass that glows.”

Uranium dioxide has been used to make glass for centuries. Pieces of uranium glass have been discovered dating back to 79 AD. Uranium glass grew in popularity in the 1830s and the glass type that glows green experienced a collectors’ boom in the late 19th century. Uranium glass has continued to stir market interest.

Uranium glass is a type of glass which has uranium, typically in oxide diuranate form, added to a glass mixture before it is heated. This produces a special color. For centuries, art glass makers and manufacturers of glass used small amounts of uranium to create glass of a yellowish green color. This glass has a translucent appearance. Sometimes viewed as a custard or opaque appearance. Some of this glass is called Vaseline, jadeite or canary glass. There are various uranium glass types that will fluoresce or glow under black or UV light. There is an old saying in the antiques world “it must glow green to be Vaseline.” When it comes to identifying uranium glass, look for uranium glass with a translucent and oily surface look.

Historically, uranium glass was produced during the 19th and early 20th centuries. This type of glass was produced until 1958 when the U.S. government stopped production. Uranium, at the time, was a regulated substance. From circa 1943 until 1958, because of the events of World War II and the Cold War, U.S. officials did not allow the production of uranium glass since the government had banned uranium salts from commercial use. Only after uranium oxide was deregulated did the U.S. government allow uranium glass to be manufactured.

Uranium glass fluoresces or glows in the dark because of the presence of uranium in the glass mixture. Collectors collect uranium glass actively from some of the best-known manufacturers such as: L. G. Wright, Buckeye Glass Company of Martin’s Ferry, OH, Mosser Glass of Cambridge, OH, Gibson of Milton, WV, Adams & Company, Boston & Sandwich Glass of Sandwich, Cape Cod, MA, Northwood & Co. in Wheeling, VA, Fenton, Steuben Glass, Degenhart Glass

Co., Viking, Heisey, Fostoria of Fostoria, OH, McKee & Bros. of Pittsburgh, PA, Imperial, Westmoreland Glass Co., Summit of Akron, OH, West Virginia Glass & Mfg. Co., O’Hara Glass Company of Pittsburgh, PA, Thomas Webb & Sons, the Pairpoint Mfg. Co. of New Bedford, MA, a firm that made Canaria vaseline glass for a few years only in the 1920s and Baccarat, known for making crystal and the firm made cristal dichroide in the 1840s.

Safety questions arise when it comes to

understanding uranium glass and collecting it. Uranium glass has a small number of radioactive elements. In a 2001 report, uranium glass was deemed safe by the U.S. Nuclear Regulation Commission. These pieces of glassware have a very small amount of radioactivity, but the glowing color of uranium glass is not caused by radiation. Uranium glass is safe to store, display, and collect.

It’s Time To Pick The Strawberries at Pumpkin Hill Produce Farms

Harry Roinick beamed with pride as he surveyed his flourishing strawberry fields. "It's been a good season for growing strawberries," he remarked, a sense of satisfaction evident in his voice. "There has been no frost damage, and the berries look great. With a little sunshine, the berries will be bursting by early June."

In 2012, Roinick introduced the revolutionary Strawberry Plasticulture production system at his farm, Pumpkin Hill Produce. This innovative approach has yielded remarkable results, with the berries growing larger and becoming easier to pick. "The planting is a little more difficult," Roinick admitted, "but the payoff is worth it. Each plant could produce as many as 40 berries."

The rolling hills just south of Nescopeck, where the farm lays, is now renowned for producing flavorful fruits and vegetables. As summer approaches, the hills come alive with pickyour-own (P.Y.O.) activity. Blueberries ripen at his neighbor, Stemmrich Farms, in late June, while Pumpkin Hill offers P.Y.O. opportunities for peppers, tomatoes, and possibly plums.

By the beginning of June, Pumpkin Hill’s strawberries will be ripe and ready for picking. Pumpkin Hill Farms, nestled in Nescopeck Township on Route 239, provides a picturesque setting for families to enjoy a late spring day together. Visitors will marvel at the spectacular view of the Nescopeck Valley while relishing the

joy of harvesting fresh strawberries. For those seeking more information, a simple call to 570-379-2106 or a quick check on Facebook provides updates on the current season.

Beyond their delicious taste, strawberries offer a plethora of health benefits. As a favorite summer fruit, they found their way into everything from yogurt to desserts and salads. Their low glycemic index made them an ideal choice for those monitoring their glucose levels. Rich in vitamins, fiber, and antioxidants, strawberries are a nutritional powerhouse. They ranked among the top 20 fruits in antioxidant capacity and are abundant in manganese and potassium. Surprisingly, just one serving— approximately eight strawberries—contains more vitamin C than an orange, according to the USDA.

As Roinick looks forward to another successful harvest, he couldn't help but appreciate the multifaceted nature of strawberries. Not only were they a source of delight for the taste buds, but also offered a bounty of health benefits, making them an indispensable part of summer's bounty.

Tax Return Copies Sacco Chiropractic Walk With The Docs

Tax Records for most taxpayers should be kept for 3 years from the date filed or 2 years from the date you paid the tax, whichever is later. Rarely, a taxpayer will file a claim for a loss from worthless securities or bad debt deductions and then they should keep the records for 7 years.

Copies do not have to be the “Original Documents” or a paper copy of the original return. The copies can be electronic scanned copies that the taxpayer stores on any computer accessible device of their choice, as long as it is not damaged and the data lost.

Computerized scanned copies serve the taxpayer in several ways. A flash drive works in most all computers. If a taxpayer’s home is flooded or burns down, they lose all their records. A flash drive can be carried out with them when they evacuate their home.

For several years we have been advising taxpayers to use a flash drive as “insurance for insurance”. A good flash drive will be able to hold many years returns, as the taxpayer choses, as well as placing copies of insurance policies, titles, birth certificates, etc. that are of value.

In doubt of this idea? Think of the Bloomsburg PA flood of 2011 when homes were swept off their foundation. Think of the recent floods in Pittsburgh PA this year.

Good tax advice is available to all our customers at Honest Abe’s Taxes. We care, think, and act in the best interest of our customers. Service first.

We always welcome new customers and remind present and prior customers to remember we are here to address all their needs. Stop in or call us today for your accounting, payroll, and income tax needs; 259 Claremont Avenue, Hometown, 570-668-8297. We look forward to meeting you.

All proceeds will benefit Go Joe 27/ St. Joseph's Center. $15 registration fee includes refreshments, t-shirt and cookout. St. Joseph's Center is a non-profit located in Scranton that serves as a home and haven for individuals with intellectual disabilities from infants to adults.

The event will begin at 11:15am in the Sacco Chiropractic parking lot, 1730 E Broad Street, Hazleton with onsite registration from 10am to 11am.

Enjoy mingling with all four of the doctors and other participants as we walk Hazleton Rails to Trails from 11:30am to 1:30pm.

Chamber Chatter with Mary Malone, President Powering Your Business

Powering your business, whatever service or product you provide is a basic need. The Chamber understands and has wanted to assist by providing a relationship with subject matter expert to assist you in finding the best energy solutions to fit your company.

TWO ITALIAN GUYS PIZZERIA

Through our partnership with World Kinnect we have been providing our members this service for the last 15 years in the area for both electric or natural gas. The Chamber is aware of numerous unscrupulous energy companies using deceiving tactics to attempt to secure both commercial and residential energy accounts. Common techniques include telemarketing calls asking for copies of energy bills (generally your PPL Distribution monthly bill) and or information on your current energy supplier. Please be careful!

We have seen where in attempting to procure energy accounts, these tactics have resulted in long term higher energy costs, sometimes with a temporary short-term “teaser electric price” but with variable rates that quickly escalate and with hidden costs and contract terms. Many times this results in a contractual obligation that costs the commercial or residential account significant expense above the best market rate and terms.

The Hazleton Chamber of Commerce has only partnered with World Kinect Energy Services (formerly OnDemand Energy Solutions) for the last 15 years with professional energy (electric and natural gas) consultation--meaning best pricing coupled with fixed contract terms. We stand by the reputation of

World Kinect Energy Services to serve our chamber members and the residents of our greater Hazleton area with the best energy rates on the market year after year.

We caution you about any telemarketing or energy outreach in local supermarkets or shopping areas. Proceed with caution! One of the many benefits of being a member of the Greater Hazleton Chamber of Commerce is happy to acquire FREE consultation for your personal or business/ nonprofit energy procurement by calling the Chamber at 570-455-1509 ext 101, or emailin mmalone@hazletonchamber.org. There is absolutely no charge or obligation to utilize the World Kinect Energy Services consultation and we know that their consultation provides the best energy advice and customer service available in the energy market today, as it has for the last 15 years.

Let us help you with your energy needs. Look forward to seeing you at one of our upcoming events or next months chamber chatter! Enjoy the fun of summer.

Is Your HVAC System Ready For Summer??

When it comes to summer, thoughts of sunshine and vacations are on most people’s minds. Very few are thinking about how to prepare their air conditioner for the sometimes-scorching summer heat (unless you’re in the HVAC business!)

Luckily for you, here at S.J. Kowalski Inc., that’s exactly what we think about 24/7. We are going to share our best tips and practices to help prepare your HVAC for summer.

Getting your HVAC ready for the warm summer months is a task best executed in the spring or early summer. It’s ideal

to get your summer maintenance done early in the season because you can easily address any issues discovered before the summer heat hits.

Here are five tips for preparing your HVAC for the summer:

• Open all your vents and ensure they are clean and clear of anything that could block the air flow.

• Schedule your annual AC maintenance to ensure your system is functioning properly.

• Clean and/or replace your filter regularly.

• Clear any leaves, sticks, or debris from near your outdoor AC unit.

• Test your AC unit by setting the thermostat to cool and ensuring it is operating properly.

HVAC Best Practices For Summer:

There are many questions on how to best maintain and utilize your air conditioning system over the summer. From ideal temperature to energy efficiency, here are our HVAC best practices for summer.

• Maintain Your Air Conditioner

• Annual maintenance is imperative to maintaining and extending the life of your equipment. A proactive service appointment helps to avoid sudden breakdowns and catch small problems before they turn into costly repairs.

Setting the right temperature on your thermostat:

While the standard summer thermostat setting has often been cited at 78 degrees, our best advice is to find a temperature that is comfortable and helps to fight humidity, but not vastly different than the temperature outside. A good night’s sleep is also affected by the temperature in your bedroom. The ideal temperature for optimal sleep is between 60

and 67 degrees. However, during hot summer months, this can be a difficult (and expensive) temperature to maintain, so ensure you’re using fans and dehumidifiers to help get a restful night of sleep.

Saving Money:

Running your air conditioner can be especially costly during the hottest summer months. Luckily, we have a few tips to help you save money this summer.

HVAC Tips to Save Money this Summer:

• Using your ceiling fans – remember that fans cool people not rooms, so be sure to turn fans off when you leave a room.

• Get a programmable thermostat - the advanced technology of these thermostats allows you to automatically warm and cool your home based on comfort factors and more.

• Clean your filters regularly - when your filters are dirty or clogged your AC unit must work harder to cool your home, increasing your energy use and costing you money.

Moving Away From The All-White Kitchen

(StatePoint) With the all-white kitchen design trend on the decline, you may be wondering how to make updates that appeal to today’s sensibilities. The key is infusing color and depth into your space. Here’s how:

Consider Earthy Wood Tones - Earthy wood tones easily transform a predominantly white space and there are many ways to incorporate this look in your kitchen. Options can be as involved as refinishing your kitchen island with a wooden countertop or swapping in wood cabinet finishes, to as simple as introducing a rolling bar cart into the space.

Embrace Matte Black - Matte black appliances are gaining in popularity for good reason – they can elevate your kitchen into a glamorous foodie oasis, and a place where cooking, eating, and gathering with loved ones brings you joy. It’s helpful if those appliances pair form with functionality. When it comes to cooking ranges, check out Verona, which offers professional-style Italian-made appliances that combine artistry with the latest cooking technology innovations. This brand is exclusively imported by EuroChef USA. For more information, visit eurochefusa. com.

Incorporate Brass Accents - Brass accents can provide dynamism and depth. Consider adding brass hardware to your fridge and updating your faucet and sink basin in a gold or bronze tone.

Beyond the trim of your appliances, you can mix these metals into your space by swapping in new cabinetry hardware and by adding in an eye-catching brass pendant above your dining area or prep space.

If you spend a lot of time in your kitchen, as many individuals and families do, consider updates that add color, depth and comfort to the space.

Increased Shoulder Pain

Warmer weather has arrived. Often, people try to increase their activity level, become more physically fit, or catch up on projects around the house during this time. Increasing activity levels can be a great way to reduce pain and stiffness or lose those extra pounds accumulated over the winter months. Many individuals find that becoming more active decreases their pain and stiffness. Others will find that becoming more active comes with an increase in pain or that certain joints are not functioning as well as they were in the past. You may need help deciding which activities are beneficial and which are hurting your progress. As we age, it may become more challenging to determine what activities to engage in or at what level of intensity for maximum benefit. Questions like these can be answered by examining and evaluating your current health status.

Our healthcare team will provide you with a plan to help you conquer your goals and feel better. Whether you want to participate in sports or have less pain, we can help you accomplish your goals. The shoulder is a complex joint with many parts functioning together to allow for proper strength and movement. If any part of the shoulder becomes injured, it can cause problems with overall function, increased pain, and even diminish sleep quality. These factors can be associated with decreased quality of life if not treated properly.

Treatment options may include conservative care measures, appropriate therapy recommendations, steroid injections, viscoelastic supplementation, PRP injections, pain management referrals, or surgical intervention when required. We perform our surgeries in a modern local surgical center, so many procedures and surgeries can be obtained without having to travel hours for

Want to Wrestle?

Not me. Too risky. An article published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology reaffirms what I already knew from years practicing dermatology: “wrestlers are much more likely to suffer skin infections than other US high school athletes”. Researchers analyzed five years of data on skin infections among athletes in 22 high school sports and determined that “nearly 74 percent of skin infections occurred among wrestlers”. Second place: football players, who garnered 18 percent.

The reason is obvious: wrestling is a contact sport and skin-to-skin contact spreads all kinds of nasty organisms. Like staph infections, herpes (cold sores and fever blisters) and ringworm (fungus). Most infections occur on the head and neck and the causative agents

You Can’t Hide and Heal

A 52-year-old woman complains for five years her right hip hurts her. A physiotherapist, an orthopod, shots, and pills haven’t helped her. So I said to her, “The way you sit, sleep or walk is causing this. Tell me about your postural habits?” She stated, “Well, I always sit on my couch, with my left leg in front of me and my right leg 90 degrees to the side of me.” I told her that is the cause of her pain, I adjusted her misaligned right sacroiliac joint, told her not to sit like that, and her pain never returned. When I asked her why she didn’t figure it out sooner, she said “I felt ashamed, I was afraid it was the cause, but I didn’t want to admit it!”

Last week a 77-year-old man with severe pain at the left base of his neck said, “The other doctors didn’t help me, and after two visits you aren’t helping me either”. So I asked him how do you sit, sleep or work?” He said, “I’m retired, so for 20 years I watch TV eight hours a day with my head turned 90 degrees to the left because that is how our TV room’s furniture is”. I adjusted his lower left neck, told him to move his chair directly in front of the TV and his pain is gone. When I asked him didn’t you realize that the cause of you pain was from being twisted for 20 years, he said it was just my habit, I never realized that was the cause until you investigated my habits. I’m ashamed I should have figured it out sooner.

You can’t hide what is going on inside you and expect it to heal. Look at your habits to see if anything is contributing to your pain. Making small changes in your habits and seeing your chiropractor will help you heal to be pain free.

What is the role of an audiologist?

An audiologist is a healthcare professional that can diagnose, manage and treat hearing loss, balance disorders and other related ear issues in both pediatric and adult patients. Audiologists hold doctor of audiology degrees (Au.D.) and must be licensed in the state in which they practice. There are several reasons why audiologists play an important role in our health-care as we get older. Early detection of hearing loss is an extremely common problem that affects individuals as they age. Early detection of hearing loss can allow for correction and management strategies to be put in place before the hearing loss impacts a person’s communication abilities and overall well-being. An audiologist is trained to assess the nature and extent of

a person’s hearing loss and design a customized plan of action, which could be hearing aids, assistive technology, or the recommendation of communication strategies. A person’s lifestyle and individual needs is taken into consideration by the audiologist. Hearing loss prevention and conservation is another area in which audiologist can assist. Hearing screenings and hearing protection are important ways to maintain healthy hearing. There are also ear-related conditions that audiologists can help to manage. One of the most common being tinnitus, which is known as ringing in the ears. Balance disorders, such as vertigo, is another specialization where audiologists can perform specialized tests to evaluate the vestibular system and recommend management options.

If you or a loved one are experiencing any of these issues, it is never too soon to schedule an evaluation with an audiologist.

The problem is a serious one; indeed, the National Federation of State High School Athletic Associations states that referees should perform skin checks before each wrestling match in an attempt to prevent athletes from spreading infections. Mats should be washed down before and after competitions. Many infections will be prevented by immediately showering after meets and practice.

The last time that I wrestled was in ninth grade (wrestling with my dog doesn’t count). Won a match now and then but not to worry: I won’t be entering any competitions in the near future

Smith Health Care's Happenings

May was a busy time for our residents between enjoying Mothers’ Day with friends and family, the warmer weather in our courtyard gazebo to Memorial Day picnic and remembrances. We started Mothers’ Day with fresh flower centerpieces adorning the dining room tables, common areas, and all throughout the facility. All the women were each presented with a lovely rose corsage. Then onto the Strawberry Short cake Social which we held in the Auditorium and was enjoyed by both residents and their families alike. Music was provided by George Rittenhouse with many residents singing along with him.

Our first picnic lunch of the season was held on Memorial Day with traditional foods served including corn on the cob, fresh grilled hot dogs and hamburgers with all the trimmings. Family and friends are always welcome to join in the fun.

Breathe Deep, Heal Fast: The Power of HBOT: Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy

Each May, NEPA Vascular proudly celebrates Hyperbaric Awareness Month, shining a spotlight on the transformative power of Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT), maybe you even saw some of our work online. However, our commitment to spreading the word about this revolutionary treatment extends well beyond a single month. Despite its growing popularity among athletes and celebrities for wellness purposes, HBOT's most profound impact lies in its medically approved (On-Label) applications, which are less known in our community but are vital for patient care.

So, what exactly is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy? HBOT is a treatment that involves breathing pure oxygen in a pressurized room or chamber. This process increases the amount of oxygen your blood can carry, which promotes the healing of damaged tissues and supports the body’s natural healing processes. When you breathe in pure oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure, your lungs can gather more oxygen than would be possible breathing pure oxygen at normal air pressure. This increased oxygen is then carried throughout your body, helping to fight bacteria and stimulate the release of substances called growth factors and stem cells, which promote healing.

For patients dealing with chronic wounds, HBOT can be a game changer. Chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, radiation injuries, and complex surgical wounds, often struggle to heal due to poor blood supply and infection. HBOT enhances oxygen delivery to these compromised areas, accelerating the healing process and reducing the risk of infection. This therapy is particularly beneficial for diabetic patients, as it helps in managing and healing ulcers that could otherwise lead to severe complications.

HBOT is also approved by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS)

and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for several medical conditions. This means it is not only a proven and effective treatment but also one that is accessible, as it is often covered by insurance. This reduces the financial burden on patients, making it a viable option for many who are in need.

At NEPA Vascular, we integrate HBOT with our comprehensive wound care services to provide a holistic approach to healing. Our team of specialists is dedicated to using the latest minimally invasive endovascular techniques and advanced therapies like HBOT to ensure optimal patient outcomes. We understand that every wound is unique, and our personalized treatment plans are designed to address the specific needs of each patient.

If you or a loved one is struggling with a chronic wound, Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy might be the solution you’ve been searching for. To learn more or to schedule a consultation, contact NEPA Vascular at (570) 616-8589. Together, we can breathe deep and heal fast.

I do not have to tell you that the warm weather is finally here and the summer driving season has begun. Car care doesn’t take a vacation between Memorial Day and Labor Day, but this is the time we normally do. The warmer months can actually present some unique challenges to the maintenance needs of our vehicles, especially with the rising cost of gasoline. So as the 2024 summer season begins so does the time for vacations, ice cream trips and long rides. However, hot weather can take its toll on our vehicles. Nevertheless, it is no secret that many automobiles are sadly neglected these days. Repairs are inevitable and become necessary sooner and more frequently when maintenance is neglected. The Car Care Council estimates that more than $62 billion in vehicle maintenance and repair that should be performed every year is neglected, evidence that there is considerably more that consumers should be doing to protect their automotive investment. By being proactive and performing a few basic maintenance checks on your own vehicle can keep your auto running throughout the warm summer months. So here are the top 7 maintenance checks you can do on your own.

Fluid Levels – Check the oil, coolant, transmission fluid, power steering fluid, brake fluid, and windshield washer fluids. If a fluid is low look for leaks, low fluid levels are often the cause of major problems due to the fact that

they are often overlooked. A low coolant level can cause overheating and engine failure. Remember, never remove or open the radiator cap on a hot engine, wait until the engine has cooled down. Low brake fluid can cause brake failure and a low oil level can cause severe damage to the engine of your car as well. Scheduling an oil change at the beginning of the summer season is a good idea. Remember, oil is not only a lubricant but also acts to cool the vital engine parts.

Tire Inflation Pressure – All tires should be inflated according to the manufactures recommended pressure. Most accidents involving tire blowouts are due to improper air pressure. To find out where the right pressure is you can look for the decal on the inside of the driver’s side door or also in your owners’ manual. Remember, a properly inflated tire will also save you gas!

Battery – Believe it or not, batteries normally fail in the summer months due to the hot weather. Check the age of the battery and if it is older than 5 years it is probably a good time to replace it. Also clean all the corrosion off of the battery terminals.

Belts And Hoses – Weather can wreak havoc on your belts and hoses. Check the condition of your coolant hoses by squeezing them to feel for soft spots which indicate a worn-out hose. By twisting the belt or belts you may see any signs of cracks, distortions, worn spots or failure. Summer is not the time to be stranded on the highway because of a busted radiator hose or a torn belt.

Brakes – The braking system is obviously an important part of maintenance but is one of the most neglected. Most motorists can handle the task of checking brake lining and brake fluid with common hand tools. Otherwise, have the brakes system checked at a qualified repair shop. This is especially true if you are planning on traveling this summer.

Windshield wiper blades –

Powerful summer storms can dump a lot of water and make visibility near zero. The extreme temperature changes from the winter season wreak havoc on the wiper blades by

causing cracks and tears that can lower the effectiveness of the wipers. If your wipers are leaving visible streaks or take several passes to clear away light rain, they need to be replaced.

Air Conditioning - If you plan on spending some travelling time in your vehicles then now is the time to check you’re A/C system. You most likely have not needed to use it in many months. Small leaks can develop over the winter months.

Have a qualified technician repair you’re A/C if it is not blowing cold air. Remember that it is important to maintain your automobile. The items mentioned are just a small part of what should be a thorough maintenance schedule for your automobile. Keeping your car safe, reliable and fuel efficient through proper maintenance will ensure an enjoyable summer driving season. Stay healthy and safe! Happy Motoring!
