Trending Vacation Habits in 2021 (Family Features) For many travelers itching to go on vacation, 2021 offers plenty of opportunities to get out and go. Whether it’s heading to an outdoor escape or simply cozying up with loved ones while enjoying beautiful surroundings, vacation is on the minds of many. When planning your next vacation, keep these trends in mind: Finding Fresh Air Heading to the great outdoors for adventure has long been a popular form of travel, and that desire will likely reach new heights in 2021. After a year of isolation and uncertainty, many families are seeking the serenity and escape of the wilderness. According to the survey, four of the top five emerging destinations for 2021 are near lakes, rivers or streams where families can camp, hike and fish. Cozy is King The search for coziness and comfort is nothing new for travelers, and the pandemic has only heightened the need for a place to relax and unwind. Many travelers looking for an escape are opting for cabins and chalets, which provide inviting spaces

to make family memories while also recharging the proverbial batteries. Typically nestled near mountainsides, forests and lakes, cabins and chalets offer open spaces so families can leave behind the hustle and bustle of everyday life while being surrounded by natural beauty, which has led to an increase in demand for Vrbo cabins by nearly 25% and chalets by almost 20% year-overyear. A Vacation Do-Over It’s common for families to miss their loved ones and seek to make up for lost time. In fact, according to the survey, families who were forced to cancel a 2020 vacation are ready for a redo. Rather than scrapping their trips entirely: • 44% of travelers who had a trip canceled due to COVID-19 plan on rescheduling the same vacation. • 54% of respondents who want a redo said they were looking forward to going to that destination. • 31% of travelers said the main reason they want to go on their next trip is to spend quality time with family. 14th Annual Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival Sunday, July 11th

Panorama Community Magazine

A celebration of coal region heritage and culture. The 14th Annual Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival is set for Sunday, July 11, 2021 from 10 AM to 5 PM on the grounds of the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum in Lansford, PA. This unique, educational, and fun event celebrates Northeastern Pennsylvania’s Anthracite coal region history, culture, crafts, food, and music. The event is presented by the Panther Creek Valley Foundation, the parent nonprofit organization of the No. 9 Coal Mine and Museum. Admission to the festival grounds, museum, and parking are free. Underground tours of the No. 9 Coal Mine will be available throughout the day for a nominal charge. The No. 9 Coal Mine is the world’s oldest continuously operated deep Anthracite coal mine having first been opened by the Lehigh Coal and Navigation Company in 1855 and operated until June of 1972. The guided mine tours are approximately one hour in length including the train ride into and out of the mine. The “Wash Shanty” Museum on the grounds houses one of the region’s largest collections of Anthracite coal mining artifacts, tools, photographs, and memorabilia. Many unique attractions and exhibits are offered as part of this year’s Heritage Festival. In keeping with tradition, the Coal Miner’s Shoveling Competition is always a favorite event. Anyone over the age of 16 is invited to participate in this competition where the goal is to shovel a half ton of coal in the shortest time. In past years this event has been very competitive drawing

participants from throughout the coal region. This event begins at 2 PM with trophies being awarded to the winners. Interesting and fun exhibits will highlight coal region heritage and culture such as an old time “Wash Day” exhibit, antique vehicles, coal advertising signs, coal region beer trays, a display of old fashioned moonshine making equipment, and mine safety and rescue displays. A variety of great coal region music will be featured throughout the Heritage Festival. Entertainment will be provided by WMGH Polka Program, live with “Polka Joe” Manjack, DJ Shawn Frederickson with classic coal region music, folk music by Van Wagner, Jay Smar, and Dave Matsinko as they stroll the grounds. Throughout the day re-enactors will walk the grounds in authentic “patch town” outfits performing skits and telling stories of the mines. A wide variety of vendors, ethnic foods, and festival favorites will also be available. The Coal Miner’s Heritage Festival is put on every year by the Panther Creek Valley Foundation, a registered 501C3 non-profit organization dedicated to the preservation of the region’s Anthracite coal mining heritage. To register as a participant or a vendor please contact Dale Freudenberger at dalefreud@gmail.com or 610-597-6722. Time to Hit The Open Road? Rent An RV! (NAPSI)—Consumer preferences have changed drastically since the start of the pandemic, with travel being no exception. Thousands of Americans have opted out of airline tickets and hotel reservations in favor of RV rentals, a safer method of travel that allows for self-contained excursions with a bedroom, bathroom and kitchen all on-board. As more Americans become increasingly comfortable with the idea of getting back on the road, RV travel appears to be making its way into the mainstream. RVshare, the first and largest peer-to-peer RV rental marketplace, has seen RV bookings quadruple since last summer. A Travel Sentiment survey conducted by RVshare found that nearly 70% of respondents plan to travel in the next three months, with the majority reporting

Family Friendly Ideas for Summer Fun Out and At Home (Family Features) Warm, sunny days are the perfect setting for making family memories, but they’re also ideal opportunities to encourage kids to get creative and let their imaginations soar. These ideas for summertime activities encourage family interaction, and the more kids get to help plan and organize the details, the more engaged you can expect them to be. Visit Your Local Park Pack all the kids’ favorite snacks and beverages to keep cool and hydrated. Choose your spot under a big shady tree and spread out for an impromptu picnic. Be sure to bring along outdoor toys for a game of catch or lighten the load and create a nature scavenger hunt with different types of leaves, rocks and flowers for kids to discover. Find the Animals Visit your local Association of Zoos and Aquariums accredited zoo or aquarium and have your kids find as many animals as they can from the AZA SAFE: Saving Animals From Extinction species list. It’s a good opportunity to talk about the concept of extinction and why these animals are on the list.

that they will not be flying any time soon and would instead opt to travel via RV. Don’t own an RV? No problem. RVshare lists more than 100,000 RVs across the U.S. for rent by owners looking to make a second income off their asset that otherwise might be sitting unused. With options ranging from a luxury motorhome to a confined camper, there is something for everyone at any pricepoint. Tips for Renting an RV: •Use a trusted site: Use a trusted site like RVshare.com where your payment is protected and the owner of the vehicle is verified. •Have a plan before booking: Have an idea of where you plan to take your vehicle. Make a reservation to reserve a spot at the campground. •Review the full listing: The listing is full of information including pricing, fees, rental amenities including supplies onboard. RVs aren’t always outfitted and you may have to bring towels, linens and cookware. Interested in learning more about how to book an RV rental? Visit RVshare.com.

Water Sponge Challenge Cool off with a fun and refreshing water fight with a few creative twists. First grab sponges, or water sponge balls, and a full bucket of water. The sponges are reusable so you can use them all summer long. Make it extra fun by organizing teams with kids against adults or everyone fending for themselves. Encourage kids to devise their own blockades and targets or adapt a game like baseball or dodgeball using water sponges in place of the usual balls.

Make Oven S’mores On a rainy night (or any night) make a s’more by putting it in the oven. They turn out just as melty and gooey as the campfire version but with easier prep and cleanup. This is a tasty way to get those creative juices flowing. Experiment with different candies, such as peanut butter cups in place of chocolate bars. Or add different ingredients and have other family members guess the flavors.

(BPT) - What are two things that dads all over America would love to do the most this coming summer? Spend time with their kids ... and catch fish. So, if you're looking for a unique way to celebrate your love for dear ol' dad, how about inviting him to go fishing (instead of the other way around). What should you do to prepare to take dad fishing? Here are some tips from the fishing folks at Rapala, which according to the International Game Fish Association (IGFA) is responsible for more world records than any other fishing lure in the world. 1. Ask dad to go fishing. Dad may be

unsure if you or the rest of the family wants to go fishing. That's where you'll surprise him - by you asking him to fish. Grab a fishing rod, make a small card, and go up to dad and invite him to go fishing this summer. Get dad to commit to a date, and a back-up date, in case it rains. It's a great way to bring a smile to his face. 2. Do your homework. You can let dad suggest a favorite lake or river for your day out, or you can go online and find a nearby lake, pond or river to fish. Two sources to try out: FishBrain or Fishidy. Remember, you don't need a boat to go fishing. There are many places where you can fish from shore, rent a canoe or boat, or kayaks. Some parks even rent fishing rods and

reels for those who don't have them. 3. Go to where the fish are. All dads want to think that catching fish was their idea. So of course, to ensure that you have a great day on the water, you'll want to go where the fish are biting. If you're not sure, call up a local fishing tackle shop to find out where to go, or go online to a local fishing magazine website for their latest fishing reports. 4. Give dad a proven fish catcher. You're going to need fishing lures to catch fish, so make sure to give dad a proven fish catcher - either the Original Floating Rapala and the Shad Rap, or both, if you want to be really kind to dad. These lures are made from balsa and feature a wounded minnow action that is irresistible to fish everywhere. They're among the most popular-selling fishing lures in the world. 5. Pack dad snacks. Dads love their snacks every bit as much as their kids. So, don't forget to pack a sandwich, some chips and a soft drink. Meat sticks and homemade chocolate chip cookies will earn you hero status. 6. Don't forget the sunscreen. Make sure dad practices sun safety (or doesn't get sunburned) - bring along the sunscreen and have Dad apply ample amounts on his face, ears and nose. 7. Build in some nap time. A day out on the water can wear anyone out. Even dads. So make sure to allow some nap time for your dad after you get back from fishing. 8. Take a great picture. Even when you catch the bigger fish, all will be forgiven if you get a couple of great photos of dad with his fish. If he wants to hold it a little closer to the camera, go ahead and let him. 9. Laugh at his dad jokes. No doubt, you will get an earful of dad jokes during your time on the water. Rather than wince, encourage him to tell you another and enjoy every moment of it. After all, it's Take-A-Dad Fishing Day! 10. Just have fun. The biggest mistake you could make is focusing just on fishing. Dads want to have fun, too. Maybe work in a stop at a local restaurant for breakfast. Take lots of photos and video - even if the fish aren't cooperating. Encourage dad to share his favorite fishing stories. Whatever you do, make sure you tell dad that the most important part of this day is just being together. To learn more about how to help dad catch more and bigger fish visit Rapala.com

Whether your building your bridal registry or your baby registry - here are some simple tips to help you build the best list. 1. Take inventory of what you have and what you need. 2. Register for things at a wide range of price points. The whole purpose of a registry is to make it easy for your guests to get you things you’ll like and need. 3. Keep access in mind when you choose where to register. Avoid stores that are local or regional if you have many guests who live out of the area. 4. Plan to block off at least a few hours for an in-person registry. 5. Get your partner involved. There are bound to be some parts of the registry your partner may not care about, but asking for input and making decisions together lets you both share in the excitement.

Do You Remember You? by Missy Nenstiel, Brandon's Forever Home The you before you were you-do you remember that person? Maybe you were outgoing or shy, class clown or president of the AV Club. Maybe you were all these things! There is one thing for sure, there was likely someone (or multiple people) in your life cheering you on, offering advice, or championing your efforts. Imagine now if those special people who were possibly a parent, grandparent, coach, or teacher were never in your life. Think about how different things would have been for you then and now. According to mentoring.org there are 9 million children in the US who would benefit from having a mentor. The Brandon’s Forever Home Teen Mentoring Program aims to be a part of the movement providing a committed, nurturing adult to be matched with one of our local teens currently on a wait list. The teens we have grown to know through the mentoring program are ages 14-21, they are bright, talented, and sadly very at risk. These children have grown

up facing neglect and abuse and have likely never had a single adult to rely on in their entire lives. Without our mentoring program, at risk teens are more likely to become incarcerated, addicted, homeless, pregnant, or deceased after they graduate high school – a future no child deserves or should have to face! The teen mentoring program currently meets once a month virtually for a free event and dinner. We encourage matches to stay in touch at least 2 hours of time in between our events and report back to us with what they have accomplished. If you are looking for a way to make a huge impact on lives in the community THIS IS IT, and it could not be easier! If you are unsure if you have the right personality to be matched with a teen, I can tell you- you do! You are just as unique as our teens and your skills and talents are beyond valuable for someone waiting to meet you. If you are interested in becoming a mentor, please email missybfh@ptd.net. We are helping children in need together!

How Identity Theft Affects Your Income Taxes By Alice Horton-Barr, CEO, Honest Abe's Taxes, Inc. Your Social Security Number is stolen. It can be used to get fake ID. Then the person that has it can use it to get a job or file unemployment. They can apply for credit cards, etc. When you file your taxes and they get rejected because a “return has already been filed for this social security number” you know that you have identity theft at the IRS. At that point we have to help track it, fix it and then in the future you will have an Identity Theft Pin Number issued to you each year that you must use to file your tax return so that the IRS knows it is “YOU”. False unemployment claims have been filed using people’s social security numbers illegally. Tax refunds have been reduced for back payments of unemployment, which the taxpayer did not owe, thus another sign of identity theft. Previously the IRS required you to prove identity theft before they would start to issue a number to a taxpayer each year. Now, they started a Voluntary Program to get an Identity Theft Pin Number to protect yourself. CRITICAL is that you understand once you are in this program this PIN number letter that you receive each year is GOLD. DO NOT LOSE IT. IT is nearly impossible to get it replaced and then you have to

20,000 and Counting

On May 21st, Jose Godoy of the Seattle Mariners became the 20,000th player in MLB history. He entered the game in the 6th inning as defensive replacement and became part of a very exclusive club dating back to 1871. On July 2, 2011, Godoy signed with the St. Louis Cardinals as an international free agent from Venezuela, for $200,000 at age 16. He made his professional debut with the Dominican Summer League Cardinals in 2012. During the next nine years he spent time in Johnson City, TN, Palm Beach ,FL, State College, PA, Peoria, IA, and Springfield, MO, before finally making it to AAA Memphis in 2019. He was invited to Spring Training for the 2020 season. Godoy did not play in a game in 2020 due to the cancellation of the minor league season because of the COVID-19 pandemic. He was added to the Cardinals 60-man player pool for the 2020 season but did not make an appearance for the club. On November 2, 2020, Godoy elected free agency. On November 20, 2020, Godoy signed a minor league contract with the Seattle Mariners organization. He was assigned to AAA Tacoma Rainiers to begin the 2021 season. On May 20, 2021, Godoy was selected to the 40-man roster and promoted to the major leagues for the first time. Godoy made his MLB debut that night against the San Diego Padres as a replacement for fellow backstop Tom Murphy.

(BPT) - Summer is almost here! But with the sunny days and warm weather comes another concern for parents in an already challenging year: How their school-age children will be spending their summer days. But time away from the classroom, virtual or otherwise, doesn't mean the holidays can't still be a time of learning, even with a hobby children already enjoy. For many, that hobby is video games. And while games have been studied for their benefits in critical thinking, problemsolving and reaction times, one advantage is often overlooked - games' ability to spark an interest in history. "When game creators have the right intentions in mind, they can create something that is both engaging and educational for kids," said James Hornfischer, naval historian and author. "Even if it doesn't give them a full history lesson, getting them engaged in the action can open up their curiosity and get them to ask questions, which is important for a successful education." Here are some to consider: World of Warships World of Warships is an online naval combat game set in the first half of the 20th century that lets you battle with - you

guessed it - historically accurate warships Players can choose and customize their vessels in a port and strategize to win against the opposing team. Since its official launch in September 2015, World of Warships has added over 400 historical vessels, including the iconic warships that wrote history during World War II. Besides the ships, the game features notable historical harbors and port cities meticulously recreated to the smallest details. The game also awards players for their achievements through historical Collections, bringing the story about different time periods, technological achievements and famous commanders closer to players. The game's creators are dedicated to fans' love of naval history, and regularly release educational resources including the "Naval Legends" YouTube series, which visits and explores the history of the real-world retired warships. This enables players to develop deep appreciation for the naval heritage. On May 18, World of Warships streamed its own "Night at the Museum," which provided tours of 15 naval museums around the globe. The full 17-hour stream that was followed live by 1.4 million history enthusiasts is now available to watch on World of Warships' Twitch and YouTube channels.World of Warships is free to play on PC and World of Warships: Legends is available on Xbox, Xbox Series X, PS4 and PS5.

Panorama Community Magazine Valiant Hearts: The Great War Released in 2014, Valiant Hearts: The Great War is one of the few games to tackle World War I and does so with nuance and an emotional depth uncommon to the genre. While not shying away from the horrors of war, the game focuses on the stories of those caught up in it, and what it was like trying to survive day to day. The game leans more on puzzle sequences than violent gameplay and has been likened to an interactive cartoon. Valiant Hearts: The Great War is available for download on iOS, Android, PC, PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch. Assassin's Creed Assassin's Creed is one of the most popular gaming franchises and has released 12 main games and several more spinoffs that take place during different eras of history.

There's no getting around the fact that violence plays a major role in the gameplay, but the series is also known for having an engaging storyline and being dedicated to historical accuracy both in its characters and settings. The series' games take place during the Crusades, the Industrial Revolution, the American Revolution and in ancient Egypt and Greece. The franchise's developer even made Assassin's Creed: Unity, set during the French Revolution available for free after the near-destruction of Paris' famous Notre-Dame cathedral, as a way to raise money for restoration and also let players explore the in-game recreation of the landmark. The series of games is available to play on consoles and PC. As the weather turns warm and kids enjoy summer break, encourage them to explore video games that are not only fun to play, but provide a bit of a real history lesson!

It’s Time To Pick The Strawberries at Pumpkin Hill Weather Has Been Great, Early Picking Expected “New fields and good weather promise a bumper crop of Strawberries.” “The biggest berries in years..” Says Harry Roinick, of Pumpkin Hill Farms in Nescopeck. “We have increased our acreage for the 9th straight season.” “This has been a good season for growing strawberries,” said Roinick. “There has been no frost damage and berries look great.” “With a little sunshine, the berries will be bursting by early

June. In 2012, we introduced Strawberry Plasticulture production system to Northeast Pennsylvania. The berries have been much larger and easier to pick with the system,” said Roinck. “The planting is a little more difficult and but the plant could produce as many as 40 berries per plant." The rolling hills just south of Nescopeck, have been long noted for producing flavorful fruit and vegetables. The hills will be alive with pick you own (P.Y.O) activity this summer. In late June Blueberries will be ready at Stemmrich Farms. As the summer rolls along head back to Pumpkin

Art & Antiques By Dr. Lori The Wedding Collectibles of HRH Queen Elizabeth II By Dr. Lori Verderame

Panorama Community Magazine At the time, the designer Sir Norman Hartnell cited Allesandro Botticelli's famous painting Primavera, from the Uffizi collection in Florence, Italy, which symbolizes the coming of spring, as his inspiration for the dress design. The dressmakers using duchesse satin from Scotland had only three months to construct the dress before the November nuptials. The wedding dress had a fitted bodice, heart-shaped neckline, and a low v- point waist. The gown featured a skirt of floor length panels. The dress had a 15 foot long silk tulle train which trailed behind her with enough fabric to keep her eight bridesmaids busy. The dress featured satin applique produced at Lullingstone Castle in Kent, ten thousand seed pearls imported from the United States of America, and hand sewn crystals. Her shoes were high heeled sandals of ivory duchesse satin trimmed with silver and seed pearl buckles made by Edward Rayne. After the wedding, as royal tradition dictates, the Royal couple waved to adoring crowds from the balcony of Buckingham Palace. Several decades after that glorious day in November of 1947, the Royal couple enjoyed 73 years of marriage and the adoration of many the world over. Not only does that lend you some self-assurance in interviews, but it gives you the confidence to say ‘No thanks’ when it’s not the greatest offer.

Cargill Employee Experience Centers on Career and Community When Luis Paulino Jimenez moved from New Jersey to be closer to his family in Pennsylvania, he took a job with Cargill having never heard of the company’s name. Little did Jimenez know that because of his drive and grit, within a year of working at the Cargill protein plant in Hazleton, he’d move up in position, from line lead all the way to supervisor of a team who works to process and deliver a variety of meat products to retail grocery stores across the state and beyond. From the start, Jimenez’s leaders saw his potential and continuously provided him with opportunities to grow. “They supported me by providing me with the tools and opportunities to excel,” said Jimenez. “Now, as a supervisor it’s important that I pay it forward and show my team the same level of support and opportunities to continue improving and growing.” Like Jimenez, Omar Tineo is a plant supervisor at Hazleton but began his Cargill journey working as a janitor on the plant floor. His ambition and hard work could not be ignored. He went on to work as an operator in the shipping department and within only a short time, he advanced to department leader, then to a plant supervisor. “This is just the beginning for me. I see myself working at Cargill into the future and I’m excited for what is in store,” said Tineo. Felix Diaz Lara, plant supervisor at

Hazleton, began his career on the production floor where he held a variety of roles and advanced quickly. Within three years, he was named supervisor. While working on the production line, Lara witnessed firsthand the company’s focus on safety. “Cargill and my teammates really care about our safety. From promoting people safety to food safety, I feel valued and prepared to do my job well,” said Lara. Lara plans to keep working his way up the company ladder. Saving Gas - The top six tips to help deal with rising gas prices. by Thomas R. Buff

Here we go again. After a few years of steady fuel costs, we are now seeing a spike that will affect our pocketbooks. In fact, fuel costs are at their highest level in over four years. With the summer travel season approaching the prices are most likely to continue to rise. Every motorist is not only fed up with the high prices of gasoline but also with the thousands of miracle adds that boast of gas pinching gadgets that claim will save you a pile of money in gas savings. The reality is that you can improve your fuel economy up to 35 percent by simply following these five tips that do not involve infomercial adds or wacky contraptions. These tests are performed under real world conditions and are recommended by ASE certified Master Automobile Technicians. Follow these simple tips and you will see a substantial savings at the pump. 1. Slow Down – slowing down is not only sound advice but is a proven fact to save gas. In a typical car every 10 miles and hour over 60 mph is similar to the price of gasoline going up about 50 cents a gallon. The reason behind this is all about friction. Traveling faster makes the job of overcoming friction together

resulting in more gasoline used. In fact, if a car gets 28 mps at 65 mph, driving at 75 will drop it too 24 mph. What is the perfect speed for improving gas mileage? Most experts claim it is between 55 and 60 mph. 2. Check your tire pressure – According to studies, 86% of motorist do not check their tire inflation. The results are typically underflated tires, which cause a tire to rest on both of its shoulders or sides as compared to the center where the tread is located. Tires that are under inflated by a mere 6 psi can reduce fuel economy up to 2 percent. Most of todays vehicles are equipped with Tire Pressure Monitoring Systems which will alert the driver if a tire becomes low on air. 3. Tune-Up – A neglected engine is a major cause of gas guzzling. By simply replacing a clogged air filter it can improve gas mileage by 10 percent. Remember, an engine has to breath properly in order to burn fuel efficiently. A basic tune-up that includes replacing the spark plugs, fuel filter, and air filter is a good way to improve gas mileage instantly. 4. Use cruise control – When driving on a highway, cruise control can save you up to 14 percent in gasoline usage. Driving at a constant speed reduces acceleration input or “surging”. The automobiles computer will feed gasoline at a slow and steady pace when acceleration is needed. So, if you have cruise control, use it. You will increase your gas mileage. 5. Be weight-conscious. Don’t carry around items you don’t need. For every 100 pounds of weight in your vehicle, fuel economy decreases by one to two percent. Also, reduce drag by putting bulky items inside the vehicle or trunk instead of on a roof rack. 6. Buy a more fuel-efficient vehicle – Getting a new car or truck may not be on your agenda but with high gas prices and a weak economy, this is the time to buy. May automobile manufactures are offering huge rebates to entice the motoring public to buy cars. There are many new vehicles that offer a huge saving in miles per gallon without sacrificing safety. So, think long and hard about your transportation needs and research the advantage of owning a hybrid, electric or a gas-sipping automobile with a four-cylinder engine. Although these are simple tips they may just save you a pile of money in gas savings. In this day and age any savings is helpful. Happy Motoring

Make Sure Your HVAC Unit is Ready For Summer by the HVAC experts at S.J. Kowalski With summer starting, now is the time to start thinking about things you can do around the house to help keep your HVAC system at its peak. When you work to make your home and your HVAC unit complement each other, you can save money on your utility bill. If you’re trying to avoid replacing your unit, you can keep it going for years to come by making sure it’s not going to be overloaded or overworked unnecessarily. You can also enjoy a much more comfortable home at the perfect temperature, no matter what the temperature is outside. Here are some ways to ensure that your HVAC will be ready to take on the summer. 1. Focus On The Filter - HVAC filters should be changed or cleaned at least once a month especially if you have pets in your home or if you are a smoker. Once you

We Take

have a fresh or newly cleaned air filter, your HVAC won’t have any dust or dirt blocking or restricting the cool air from circulating freely throughout your home. 2. Keep Outdoor Areas Clear - You want to make sure the area around your outdoor unit is free and clear of all debris, plants, leaves, branches or other items that are blocking or touching the unit. This is a task that takes year-long proactive treatment. A good rule of thumb is to have a HVAC professional do annual maintenance. 3. Programmable Thermostat - You can help with your energy costs by installing a programmable thermostat. Depending on the weather and your personal schedule, you can make adjustments to the temperature you want inside your house. When you will be out, schedule your unit to let the indoor temperature rise a little. Not only does this help save money, but running a climate controlled schedule can help prevent your air

Panorama Community Magazine conditioner from working too hard during the warmest months. 4. Maximize Air Flow With Fans - Some of the best things you can have throughout your house are ceiling fans. Make sure your ceiling fans are set to rotate clockwise during the summer. This way, the air can flow downward, preventing excess heat from rising up into the higher levels of your home and making your air conditioner have to pick up the slack. 5. Utilize Window Treatments - Temperatures in your home can rise significantly due to the sun penetrating through windows. Your A/C then has to kick into overdrive to combat the quick heat up in the afternoon. One way to battle this is to invest in window treatments, such as blinds or drapes. Window coverings over larger, sun-exposed areas can help prevent the afternoon buildup of heat that takes place in the summer months. 6. Clear Out Your Vents - Your HVAC unit can only work at its best if there are no obstructions to the flow of air. Make sure all the vents are open and there is no furniture placed over them. Clear out dust or debris blocking vents. This helps your HVAC get an even coverage throughout the your home. 7. Reduce Heat From Other Appliances - It’s smart to avoid using appliances that

Est. 1998

generate a lot of heat throughout the day. If your cooking a large dinner, use your grill instead of your oven. Turning on the oven may add extra warmth to your home and put a strain on A/C. 8. Control The Humidity In Your Home - High home humidity can be uncomfortable. It can also pose a threat to your home's structure and surfaces. Humidity in the summer makes temps feel even warmer than it is. Likewise, your A/C has to work harder and run longer to cool the air. And even then, the air can feel clammy and heavy. Consider installing a whole house dehumidifier. Ideal

indoor humidity should be maintained between 30%-50%. 9. Consider Updating Your Unit - If you tried all these tips and your HVAC unit is still not sufficiently cooling your home, it may be time to invest in an upgraded system. An older unit may actually be costing you more each year to operate. Call 570-455-2600 and let the professionals at S.J. Kowalski, Inc help you choose a new HVAC system that will save you money and keep you cool in the summer and warm and cozy in the winter.

Do You Suffer From Neck Pain? by John Degenhart, DC

Soon, I’ll be in full time practice for 41 years. Wow, it’s been great! I see so many patients who have neck pain, and even numbness into their arms. I’ll be brief, but if you understand your body, you can prevent damaging your neck, discs, and nerves. There are seven bones in the neck with a disc (cushion) between them. All your life, the more you keep your chin up, the less pressure on the discs and nerves in your neck. So like a detective, I always help a new patient discover what is causing their pain. Some doctors just prescribe pain killers and muscle relaxants. But people are smarter these days. They know that is just like a band aid. They want the problem fixed, not just covered up. So listen to what I hear when I talk to patients who have neck pain that eventually causes pinched nerves in their neck and numbness into their arms. They look down at a computer many hours a day. They sleep on their stomach with their neck twisted to the side. They look down knitting, crocheting, or

doing puzzles. They look down playing computer/video games. They look down texting a lot. So I take an x-ray of the side view of their neck. It shows how the discs (cushions) get compressed. As the cushions get thinner, it pinches nerves into the arms. After years of medicine covering up the symptoms, the condition worsens. The vertebrae degenerate, growing calcium deposits, called spurs, which will try to fuse, and then surgery is needed. The solution—call our office. Too rough of a neck adjustment could irritate the spurs and bulging/herniated discs. But a gentle chiropractor who know his/ her boundaries, could gradually realign the neck bones. A device called a neck traction unit is taken home to gently pump and stretch the neck up. And the magnificent body heals. So keep your chin up, by lowering your seat and elevating the screen or phone. Don’t sleep on your stomach. Get your neck safely adjusted. Get your tight muscles between your shoulder blades massaged at our office . Surgeries, shots, pills, can all be averted. Call today!

call home. These communities are not the “nursing home” image of the past and tailored to meet the diverse needs of older adults. With outstanding amenities like onsite wellness services, a barbershop and salon, freshly prepared meals, group outings and activities, and live entertainment—everyone can enjoy a fulfilling retirement! No matter the challenges that come with age, compassionate caregivers are never out of reach. There is always a gentle helping hand ready to a ssist you with daily tasks like dressing, bathing, and medication management. Mealtime also plays a role that is above and beyond nutrition. Dining plans take the hassle out of meal prep, cooking, and cleaning, so you have more time to do the things you enjoy. The menu selections are delicious too, and often compared to restaurant-style service. So, if you were envisioning field rations and microwaved dinners, think again! But the best part of senior living is the unity. Every Veteran can appreciate the sense of belonging and camaraderie. A true community will nurture lasting friendships, giving you plenty of opportunities to connect and create a vibrant social life. Unfortunately, many Veterans are unaware of various benefits available to them that might help defray the cost of senior care. In addition to of these government-funded programs, senior communities sometimes offer rate discounts to Veterans, like Heritage Hill, which offers a 5% discount on new move-ins. De Jesus Family Chiropractic Offers Cutting-Edge Technology By Dr. Scott D. Ungemach – De Jesus Family Chiropractic Center MMT is a new therapy that is a combination of instrument technology coupled with simultaneous patientassisted specific postures and movements. This dual-motion therapy is the guiding principle of MMT. It affects muscles, ligaments, joints, and the nervous system. During MMT, the patient, moves in a specific motion pattern while the doctor directs the instrument in a prescribed manner. The Pro-Soft 360 computer system is automatically calibrated for each muscle it is used on and then directs the right amount of tension and force upon the tissues as the treatment is applied. Most commonly, musculoskeletal pain is linked to a dysfunction in muscle, ligament, joint capsules, or fascia (the connective tissue of the body). Each of these tissues contains specialized sensory receptors which sense or “tell” the nervous system to react in a neutral, protected, or guarded manner. If left unchecked, this leads to pain, inflammation, and limitations in motion and/or flexibility. As these tissues’ “lock” the injured body part

New Hope for People with Alzheimer's (NAPSI)—There could be promising news for the more than six million Americans living with Alzheimer’s disease and the people who care for them. The Problem: Although nearly one in every three people will eventually be afflicted and it’s the third leading cause of death of older adults in the U.S. (surpassed only by heart disease and cancer in nonpandemic years), there may be effective treatments on the horizon. An Answer? One contender is about to start a Phase I clinical trial. It’s a novel drug known as NVG-291 and it’s designed to repair damaged nerves. Originally developed by NervGen Pharma Corp. (TSX-V: NGEN) (OTCQX: NGENF) to treat spinal cord injury, it soon became apparent that the drug may be healing nerve damage at a biologically fundamental level. That suggests it can also help people who have multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer’s disease. For further facts on the clinical trials and NervGen, visit www.nervgen.com.

into a position to avoid pain, these same tissues can shorten and at times, form scar tissue, making the problem worsen over time. Mechanical Motion Therapy can have a powerful, pain relieving effect on the tissues containing the specialized receptors, even in instances where it has been present for years. MMT affects the sensation of pain by altering the patient’s pain threshold. In other words, it decreases the negative effect of these pain receptors while gaining increased motion, significantly improved balance, flexibility and enhanced sports performance as a result by also resetting the neuro pathway. Research has shown that 80% of the population suffers from pain and inflammation that limits the ability to do everything from the basics of everyday life, such as getting dressed without pain,

to being forced to avoid or limit social activities with friends and family. Finally, there is a proven technology available to change lives for the better without invasive surgery or medications. At De Jesus Family Chiropractic, we are proud to be the first in NEPA to offer this amazing technology. If you or a loved one suffer from chronic pain or balance issues, please give us a call at 570 708-2228, and set up your free consultation to find out if MMT can help with your condition.
