The OSF HealthCare Mission is all about you

In August 1875, a group of Catholic Sisters fled religious persecution in Germany, where they faced imprisonment and exile. The next year, they arrived in Peoria, Illinois, speaking little English and relying on the kindness of people in the community. Through their own extreme poverty, the Sisters quickly recognized a desperate need for health care. They began caring for patients out of a small home, with Sister M. Frances Krasse making a promise to God:

In July 1877, The Sisters of the Third Order of St. Francis formally established a hospital based on a simple Mission: to serve the sick and dying “ with the greatest care and love. ” But our Mission is the same. From the clinics to the labs, hospital rooms, kitchens, classrooms and innovation spaces, we are dedicated to transformational health care that helps you live your best life. Less than three years later, the Sisters started a hospital in Bloomington, now known as OSF HealthCare St. Joseph Medical Center.

Today, after 145 years, we are bigger and health care is more complex. The OSF Ministry includes 15 hospitals, almost 150 clinical care sites in Illinois and Michigan, and more than 24,000 employees – all of whom are considered Mission Partners. Our two nursing colleges develop front-line health care workers for the present and future. We have Mission Partners solely dedicated to innovating new care technologies and better ways to make health care accessible and affordable.
