PORTFOLIO Selection of Professional & Academic Projects Panuwat Patana-anake

This Portfolio represents a selection of professional and academic projects realised over the past 6 years. I graduated a bachelor of Architecture degree in Architecture at Kasetsart University, Thailand (2006-2011) where I gained the solid base for the design of architecture and sustainable design. Afterwards, I worked for the landscape architecture studio “Redland-scape, Thailand, between 2011-2014. This expreience gave me to realise the extent of Landscape Architecture, increased my technical, constructure, drawing, and design skill as well as improving the teamwork attitude and profressional works. I am searching for gaining new knowledge, practicing and designing.

01 Hall of Suclpture The Turbine Hall Exhibition Tate Modern, London Design Studio II, 2007

The Hall of Sculpture is a subsidiary unit in Sculpture Section of Fine Arts Institute, Fine Arts Department, Ministry of Education. It is situated in the area of Fine Arts Department next to Silpakorn University. Hall of Sculpture is the place where original models of sculptural works are collected and exhibited. Various exhibits are original models of important statues, Buddha Images and composition of monuments, so these sculpture have very high cultural value. The program of project, that supposes the situation that if Tate Modern Museum in London is going to set up an exhibition of the original models of sculptual works from the Hall of Sculpture, Thailand. The aim is students had to set the exhibition theme, choose the sculptures from the hall to display, planing and design the exhibition. These sculptures are installed on “turbine hall”. The challenge of the project is installing the objects in the huge space of Turbine hall. Therefore, the curator should concern about how to design the exhibition to outstanding from the context. The objective of the project wants the students to practice about the basic of design. “CONTEXTs + CONTROLs + CONTAINER(s) + CONTENTs”. The name of this project means the keyword of the essential of design that architect must be concern in design process.

From prototype models became to the real statues which give a faith to people who believe or respect in “Kings and Heros. The concept wants to show the timeline history of the kings of Thailand and indicates that those sculptures which are in the exhibition actually, they used to be a model for the important statues in Thailand. Reference by using the context from The Hall of Sculpture such as, space, materials and structure to apply in the exhibition that can reduce the huge space of the Turbine Hall and that makes these sculptures have a suitabled size (not too small.) for the hall.

Source of Project. Relate to urban expansion of Bangkok from centre to sub-urban area, especially Nontaburi. The Nontaburi council planed to use the land in Nontaburi to become accomodation area for elites from the city centre. In addition, the sky train system constructing stimulates investors to construct the housing projects around this area that means a lot of accomodations will be built in short future.

05 THESIS Kalayaniwatana Institute of Classical Music for All Benjakitti Park, Thailand Thesis, 2010

Thesis Advisor : Prof. Saithiwa Ramasoot, Ph.D. Her Royal Highness Princess Kalayaniwattana’s initiative to establish an academy specialized in classical music to support talented youth and promote their ability to reach an international level has led to the development of the Kalayaniwattana Institution of Classical Music for All as a design thesis. The Institution aims to educate students with special talent in classical music, promote learning and activities, and provide academic services related to classical music. It also encourages and offers classical music classes for the locals and the general public as a tool to improve cultural and social awareness in need for the Thai society. With reference to overall objectives and programs of the actual project, the thesis’s structure is changed to an independent institution, while many facilities have been added to enhance the program. The 10-Rai site is located at the west addition of Benjakitti Park, formerly Thailand Tobacco Monopoly. While treating classical music students as main users, the project also targets at the general public, including the disabled, the elderly and underprivileged children as well as nearby community residents. The program comprises academic areas, performing areas, musical media and services and music-for-all facilities, with the total area of 20,330 sq.m.

Thesis

Due to the institution’s diverse concepts and contents, not only general design criteria but also a variety of special requirements have been considered, including the communal architecture concept, universal design and especially royal glorification through architecture. Accordingly, the building design strictly responds to goals and involved activities while representing the project’s image.

Thanks to the location at a corner of a park, the implementation of green design strategies in the project is significant. The building configuration is generated to harmonize with the green surroundings. Details supporting sustainable design are introduced. Examples are the use of skylight to allow natural light, the rain water harvesting system on sloped roof to collect and reuse rain water, the building orientation consistent with natural wind and ventilation direction, and the use of green roof in several areas to create connection with the park, compensate green space replaced by the building coverage and utilize for related purposes.

From those projects above, My responsibilities through contract documentation phase have been design, presentation, budget and schedule analysis, team management and coordination, point of contact, construction drawing for EIA permission and construction drawing. I work with owners, designer constructors and engineers teams to assist and collaborate to develop the architectural and landscape character and prioritize design concepts to find appropriate design directions and strategies. Generally my involvement spans through the entire life of the project, including my role as being the principal client interface.

Architectural Photography I first started holding camera when I was studyingin the third grade of university life. At the moment, my professors tended to bring us to interesting buildings for studying aesthetic, details and scape of the architecture. These are why i got used to it. Then, I started looking around and found that I wanted to capture the buildings, beautiful landscape and urban scenery. I have practised it day by day, picture by picture and it has become my deep passion. My favorite photographing technique is “Long Exposure” and adapt it into Architectural, Landsacpe and City scape photography. It leads me to study deeper in architectural details, space and materials. Furthermore, it leads me to look for the hidden soul of feature that sometimes it takes a while to find. As they use to say in the old times of photography “When you photograph a person, you capture their soul”. From this I believe it can applie to buildings as well as to any other subject. All of these are my pictures that I took during a visit to many places in England. More images in my project’s Flickr stream : https://www.flickr.com/photos/landnister/ London Bridge, London
