Remembrance Day — Lest We Forget By Shellana Sabandal & Patricia Duong “On the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month…” -A renowned citation from the armistice that ended World War I. On November 11, we remember and pay tribute to the men and women who sacrificed their lives for their country. The Libermann community, held its own service for Remembrance Day. Students and staff read verses, passages, and letters commemorated past and present soldiers and helped us remember their experiences and sacrifices. Many hours of preparation were put forward prior to the Remembrance Day event. Mr. Dimonte’s art classes created beautiful banners depicting war scenes and memorial-like quotes. Not only did every homeroom class fabricate their own unique wreaths but some staff members also shared their own personal stories of family members who have experienced war. Every year, we remember the sacrifices made by countless of men and women who fought for the country we have today. "Valor is stability, not of legs and arms, but of courage and the soul." -Michel de Montaigne
Trip to Stratford By Ellie Kubisz & Victoria Kodytuakku Students in Ms. Choma’s grade nine, ten, and eleven classes had the exciting opportunity to see a play, costume warehouse, and a new city in one day. On September 28th and October 18th, students took a bus ride to Stratford to see a production of Shakespeare’s Twelfth Night at the world-renowned Stratford theatre, and tour the company’s costume warehouse. The enriching experience brought the students’ experiences with the written play to life and offered a backstage view into the effort put into each play production at the theatre. After leaving the coach bus, groups of students toured a large barn-like building, only to be astonished at the rows of colourful costumes inside (over ten thousand-odd pieces in total). The guide showed the students how the costumes were organized based on time periods. The warehouse did not only contain clothing; it also housed precious archives, creative props - such as a trophy that incorporated a baby pacifier and plastic spoons (spray painted silver) - and an accessories collection. Some students said the best part was playing dress up with the medieval costumes, while some enjoyed the life-like zombie and severed head props. However, all appreciated the vast and meticulously organized collection of costumes. The play itself was mesmerizing and was one of the rare times that a group of teens was so engaged in a production of Shakespeare. They incorporated modern rock music to connect modern day viewers to the play. There was a whole new connection when they saw how Shakespeare intended to tell his tales; not through print, but through the art of a production. “If music be the food of love, play on.”
Awards Night at Libermann By Ghia Chuatico & Ellie Kubisz You’re sitting in the cafetorium, surrounded by a sea of faces while hundreds of parents sit behind you. Students from your grade flood the immediate rows of flipped cafeteria tables, where you ate your lunch on not too long ago. You glance at the people on your left and right, trying to remember their names and why they’re beside you. Oh, right: alphabetical order. Meanwhile, some of your friends are seated in front of you. There is a thunderous applause while each award-bearer leaves the stage, friends cheering and parents smiling. You sit back down with your certificate, eagerly waiting for the doors to open at the end of the ceremony in order to grab those delicious cookies outside. Students of Francis Libermann received their well-deserved awards on Awards Night, which ran from seven to nine in the evening on the 27th of October 2011, transforming our cafetorium into an auditorium. There were a number of awards presented to our deserving students. Those who maintained an overall average of 80% or higher are given the Honour Roll award and have their names displayed, while students achieving the highest mark in their course are granted their respective subject award. Some of the prestigious awards given along with the Honour Roll were the Business award, the Vivaldi Music award, the Father Geary award, History Fair, Toronto Wide Science Fair and Canada Wide Science Fair, and the Highest Academic Achievement awards. The guest speaker this year was alumni Miss Adela Wan, who shared with the students five principles that guided her through her years of being a student, inspiring them for their future. Also the tedious planning going into Awards Night cannot be ignored. The staff, senior concert band, guest speaker, and students were all thanked for the hours of preparation needed to organize the evening. “Knowing where to start and where to end up is not easy, and that is why we must always be prepared for the worst.”- Adela Wan

Tennis Tennis has one of the shortest seasons out of all the sports offered at Francis Libermann. After many trying practices, the team attended a tournament last month. The girls doubles team had a fantastic tournament and moved on to the finals. Also, Francis Libermann‟s exchange student, Nicholas was part of the tennis team, who played in Senior singles tennis. All in all, the team had a good season and a whole lot of fun. Go Falcons!
Volleyball A smashing season came to an end as the Libermann Volleyball team moved on to OFSAA. The hardworking boys volleyball team had a great season in which they came into the finals undefeated. The final game was a nail biter, resulting in an even match that filled each falcon with pride. Bishop Allen played the victor in this match, which marked the end of the Volleyball season before OFSAA. Mr. Ainsworth and Mr. Luck are very proud of the team, and impressed by their team spirit and their level of commitment.
Jr. Girls’ Basketball The Junior Girls‟ Basketball Team won an astonishing seven out of nine games in their 2011 season, losing their playoff game by only one point. Shannon Pereira, team captain, said “We had great coaches – Mr. McCollum and Ms. Leone. [In the playoffs] we were disappointed but went out there with all we had.”
Cross Country This year Libermann‟s cross-country team courageously ran through hilly fields, hot sidewalks, dirt roads and dense forests. The team, made up of 42 runners and 3 managers was the largest Libermann has ever had. The runners all showed dedication and the end result was four successful meets. The team spirit was great and individual runners all demonstrated true Falcon values. The three coaches, Mr. Morneau, Mr. Kennedy and Ms. Szala, were pleased with the team and want to thank all the runners and the managers, Amy Cheung, Marc Rodrigues. and Natasha Vales. 5

My dream was a very long dream Bella Brown My dream was a very long dream I died and I was flying Then, so it seemed On the clouds, I was running I lined up, like the all the others And when my turn came, They set me apart and uttered, “She must be thrown in the flame” Then there was a great light That transported me to a room Where all the souls hoped they mightNot meet their well-deserved doom And on the other side Was an inexplicable kind of light It would not turn me blind Though it shined so very bright This, I believed was heaven It was only a step away But the air was blackened By the evil spirits that searched and preyed It craved for guilt- that is the key I saw them drag those guilty souls Then one of the evil spirits came after me I saw its face burning like coals Then an angel came to me To block this vicious spirit I turned to the light, to heaven, to see If I could get in any way near it But the angel turned to say, “It is not your time” Then I was back with no time to delay And to share this dream in rhymes.
Little Plastic Barbie Dolls Amber Gushue Do you live the life you want to live? Or do you follow the orders someone else has to give? Do you try to look the same as everyone else, Playing a similar game? Do you live a life so boring, That you often find yourself softly snoring? Do you try to look like a Barbie doll? While walking in such high heels Trying so hard not to fall? Walking in straight lines Wondering how many times You’ll have to try until you get it right? Well you little Barbie clone: Until you can change this cycle, You will always be that piece of plastic, Just like all the rest All the rest of those little plastic Barbie dolls. Narcissus
A Story About a Girl
Noctis Lucis Caelum Clearly the water reflected his image, to show what it can, to please people thus. He stared at the illusion and with himself he'd discuss, The beautiful, godlike perfection of no other Reminding himself that there wasn't another. Then he vanished to water's loving embrace, even with all the beauty he gave, It couldn't save him from his watery grave. The water had cried, the gods were in wonder. What in the world had torn its heart asunder? It wasn't his death for people drowned plentiful, But the way Narcissus stared, it made me feel beautiful.
Barry The blade is her paintbrush And her flesh is the canvas Her cries are hushed In a world full of madness Red paint falls in streams of sorrow With a cry for help And a better tomorrow “Someone save me from myself.”
Ms. Ramalho
What do you teach? English but I specialize in English and History since I really love languages and reading about world history. Which school are you coming from? Fraser Thoughts on Libermann: “it has been really great so far, I really like the students and staff, and considering that Libermann is in the East end it reminds me a lot like home.” What’s a random fact about yourself? “when I was younger, I would pour Mr. Clean bottles hoping that Mr. Clean would come out in front of me.” I don‟t know about anyone else, but I for one also wished he was real. Favorite thing about Libermann: The amazing spirit of all the Libermann students. Tip for students: “stay focused, and don‟t forget to have a lot of fun in your high school years.” - Sadi Loai This interview has been edited for brevity.

Fall/Winter Issue 2011 Connections Judy Diana Perpose Dependent, Independent, A relationship between two. What varies; Distance, Time, Minutes, Hours. What you say. When you jog Another way. Create. Distance. Doubled, Tripled. What happens to the values of the other?
By: Ming Yang, Grade 9
What happens to a Relationship when the other does not change? How can a relationship Reach their destination When one gives 250, The other 2.9. Distance between two, Shows when both sides divide. Note:the poem, Connections was written using the words found on pages 238-239 of the Principles of Mathematics 9 textbook.
A love letter Bella Brown Crumpled paper everywhere My light is nearly dim But I know there’s time to spare For I know I love him My eyes are fixed on the lines That my heart has spilled I implored God divine To leave this truth concealed Yet I find my fingers ply On this tear stained paper I feel my fervor slowly die As I signed the letter
Maybe within the sky, maybe underneath the land, At the smokes of her breath; she cannot understand Unfulfilled yearnings of a lifelong tranquility Rather madness clutching, unable to set her free In the midst of nowhere and everywhere, she is cornered Each needles stabbed a bone, yet her outcries unheard Narrow suns and vast obscurities articulately combined, Effortlessly, she shook the world stating, “we are all blind.” MT.
Stars Noctis Lucis Caelum It starts with the stars, mercury, Jupiter and the sunlit mars. Blindly to them you throw your trust, to help you answer what is right and just. Your head is dusk, and your feet are dawn, you play the reverse because somehow you are drawn, to the liquid, lustrous, luminous light which conniving and cunning blows out your sight. The creative sense, a foolproof basis, threw you into an unfamiliar stasis. Keeping you hopeless it never returns, even if your body aches and yearns. Darkness finds you, enclosing your mind, you listen intently, because of course you are blind, as it whispers its secrets to the places around, you give into it and acquire the gift of sound. It keeps you and wraps you in its loving embrace, but you…, you dream of a familiar face. A vaudevillian veteran cast vicariously as both victim and villain by the vicissitudes of fate. You twist and turn, but with the things you have learned, you open your eyes and your sight has returned.
Now I can lay myself to rest To have unbroken sleep And find my deepest dreams so blessed And his heart to keep.
Ms. Muscat What subjects do you teach? Grade 9, 11, and 12 English as well as Religion What school were you at before you came to Libermann? Father Henry Carr Secondary School What’s something interesting about you? I love travelling. I‟ve been to the South African World Cup, many islands, and Europe – even though that‟s not exotic. I also own a vuvuzela [the plastic buzzing horns used at the World Cup]… and swam with dolphins. If you could visit one place, where would it be? Fiji, it‟s on the way to Indonesia close to Australia If you could be an animal other than a human, what would you be? *After much self debate* I‟d be a beluga whale.

The Libermann Green Team
Me to We Day
By Ghia Chuatico
By Christina Mikhael
Students from grades nine to twelve led by Danielle Moore, Troy Boado and Rizelle Gimena together with Ms. Chen, Ms. Llupo and Ms. Wilson, form the energetic LGT (Libermann Green Team) in order to spread environmental awareness among fellow Libermann students and within the community. For the past few years, LGT has been very active and committed to educating the school and community on how to contribute to the betterment of the environment. The main focus of the team last school year was energy conservation and so LGT applied for a thousand dollar grant which was successfully won. The money was used to organize a solar fair in the library of Francis Libermann. Here, the students set up small booths that provided presentations to inform students about the benefits of solar panels, some students demonstrated how solar panels worked and there were also booths that held trivia games about solar energy. Moving on, the members of LGT volunteered during the Kids‟ World of Energy for Evergreen Brick Works. Some worked in „activity land‟ where in elementary students could take part in fun activities and games, at the same time, learn about different energy sources. Also, some of the volunteers conducted different workshops that educated children about energy. One of the leaders of the team, Rizelle Gimena, says, “LGT has been very active through the years and we have grown and accomplished many things”, and this is proven true when LGT earned the gold certification. This school year, Libermann Green Team wants to reach out to more students besides the students of Francis Libermann. The team wants to educate children from several elementary schools, and within the community. There are a lot of prospective plans being made for this year. For example, the team plans to conserve the forest behind the school and construct an outdoor classroom if there are enough financial sources. With these ambitions, LGT made it a goal to reach gold status once again.
Free the Children 2011 We Day in Toronto was a great celebration with an audience of thousands emphasizing worldwide change. The event featured athletes, political figures, teenage activists, and artists who shared their experiences and motivated all. Free the Children cofounders Craig & Mark Kielburger and other speakers also made inspiring speeches. It was not solely the performers who animated the event, but also the crowd of enthusiastic youth with compassion for others and passion for change. Attendants experienced a rollercoaster of emotions ranging from excited cheers to solemn when presented with the harsh reality that millions face. We Day, a unique national event, emphasized a variety of issues and proposed an assortment of resolutions. The world‟s largest network of children helping children was proud to share their accomplishments which would not have been possible without the support of youths. These impacts included volunteering 2 million hours, donating $10 million to hundreds of local organizations, building 650 schools, shipping $15 million worth of medical supplies, and creating more than 3500 Free the Children groups that bring exponential change for the better. The event reached an unbelievable climax when Nelly Furtado announced her donation of $1 million to Free the Children. She was also unexpectedly reunited with Susan, a Kenyan girl she befriended, who inspired her to empower females. Students were given more momentum when informed of the "1 Like= $1" campaign in which every „like‟ on the We Day Facebook fanpage translates to sponsors donating $1 to the organization.
The Dreaded Letter “K” By Christine Manalastas In my sixteen years of experience, I have never found anything more annoying than one-worded replies and responses. Not only does it become increasingly difficult to keep an interesting conversation with people who are notorious of this act (you know who you are), but it is also a real mood-killer. I cannot even fathom why anyone would bother sending long and meaningful messages and just to get shot-down by receiving a reply about an hour later with the simple letter “k”. For those with exceedingly impressive cunning and wit: adding an „O‟ does not change matters either. I understand that there may be a certain time of unavailability and idleness, but it does not hurt to get a notification prior to this. This is on behalf of those who certainly do enjoy taking part in very lively conversations: I feel your pain and your misery.
The end of We Day was only the beginning of a new year of change. This generation of youth will raise awareness of social issues, such as the need for education, clean water, medical treatment, and alternative income strategies in underprivileged countries. Amongst them are the students of Francis Libermann‟s We Are, who are striving to fulfill human rights locally and globally.
Grade 11 By: Darrean Baga After two years of dealing with high school, we are now in the “senior” grades, and that has to count for something, right? We are halfway there, from graduating into the big, scary world of post-secondary education and adulthood. I can remember freshman year fondly, eager, yet nervous to be a high-school student. The myths of “initiations” seem so ridiculous in hindsight, and movie portrayals of the “high school life” couldn‟t have been any more inaccurate. The year after that was not as enjoyable – sophomore year was quite awkward, it was the phase without any direction whatsoever. It felt pointless; I had no idea where I was headed, and elective choices were limited. Junior year is definitely a breath of fresh air after being a lost and disoriented sophomore. All of a sudden, there is a huge selection of electives, and to be honest, I actually enjoy my classes. Of course, some courses are much tougher, but studying subject matter that you enjoy makes school bearable. I find it ironic that although the number of course choices has increased, the courses I choose are much more specific and much more in depth. The ability to choose most of my courses definitely increases the amount of attention I give my work, and it is one of the greatest benefits of being in the senior grades. However, the best part of being in the senior grades is being able to relax and have extra time to work during a spare period. It‟s fantastic to be able to have some extra time to work at school, sleep in, or leave early. I for one, get to go home early, so it is pretty much an early dismissal for me every other school day. Furthermore, spares are definitely helping me with time management, since I am more focused at school than at home, with all the numerous distractions. I don‟t know what to expect in the months to come, but with courses I enjoy and a spare period, I think I can manage.

50/50 Review By: David Moore Tear-jerking with a dash of humour, 50/50 is a must watch film. Joseph Gordon- Levitt plays a 27-year-old man by the name of Adam, diagnosed with a cancer with a survival rate of 50/ 50. Adam’s friend (Seth Rogen) coupled with his therapist (Anna Kendrick), who assisted him along the way and helped him tackle this disease. As Adam faces his trouble with cancer, friends and family support him during the toughest times. Leave it to Seth Rogen to turn such a sad and heart-wrenching film into a comedy about such a serious topic as cancer. Credit is also due to Will Reiser, whom the story is roughly based on, for writing an intriguing script which keeps the seriousness of cancer but approaches it from a lighter side. Will’s script also ensures that those who have faced cancer and those who are passionate about it are not offended. The cast was chosen wisely and they worked well with Jonathon Levine’s directing. The acting trio (Joseph, Seth and Anna) fit into their roles perfectly and overall make the characters so well-rounded and amiable. Possibly my favourite scene in the movie was when Adam shaved his head, as seen in the trailer. This scene shows the determination and commitment the cast had for this film and it definitely shows through the acting in the film. The lighting captured the scenes’ moods and helped define the characters. Jonathon Levine, who directed the movie, also ensured that there is a good balance of comedy in the film, not to make cancer a laughing matter, but to show that there is a bright side to every story. The movie did not combine comedy and drama but switched styles in between different scenes which helped keep the seriousness of the dramatic scenes. The film reminds us of what is truly important in our lives and that we must remember to treasure our friends and family. With the amazing script directed by Jonathon Levine brought to life by an astounding cast, 50/ 50 is easily one of this year's best films.
Battlefield 3 By: Darrean Baga Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you most likely have heard about Battlefield 3. Even if you prefer the fast-paced, arcade-style gameplay of the Call of Duty series, you need to admit that Battlefield 3 looks, sounds, – is, amazing. The visuals in Battlefield 3 on the consoles are astounding, and considering that both the XBOX 360 and the PS3 are consoles from 2005 and 2006 respectively, Battlefield 3 has accomplished quite a feat. The explosions, glare effects, falling debris, along with the superior sound effects, such as the firing of rockets, ricocheting bullets, and the rumbling of a tank as it crawls by, make playing the game an extremely immersive experience. In terms of gameplay, it is tons of fun. In multiplayer, there is a lot of variety in terms of classes and customization. For example, as an assault class, you can choose to help team mates with health packs and reviving them with defibrillators – or you can choose to wield a grenade launcher and wreak havoc on the opposing team. There are five game modes, each with different objectives: conquest, rush, team death match, squad death match, and squad rush. In conquest, each team must capture areas on a map, while in rush, the attacking team must destroy objectives in order to move on, while the defending team must prevent them from doing so. Team Deathmatch simply pits each team against the other, the first team to reach a set amount of kills; wins, while squad rush and squad team death match are mostly the same but require teamwork within a squad of four players. Gameplay is exciting and rewarding, being promoted to a higher rank takes a while, but along the way you can unlock new weapons and accessories for the classes you play on. Even if you are not doing very well in a match, the number of kills you manage to rack up does not really matter, but what you contribute to the team does. The campaign is somewhat cliché; a nuclear bomb threat is not very creative, let alone three; however there were several missions which I enjoyed. Battlefield 3 is a definite must-buy; the graphics, audio, and gameplay are exceptionally fun.
One Day Reviewed by Ghia Chuatico Author: David Nicholls Love sometimes finds a way to redesign the paths of people’s lives so that they inevitably converge. One Day by David Nicholls is a story about two college graduates, Emma Morley and Dexter Mayhew, finding themselves side by side at the dawn of July 15, 1988 discussing what lies ahead of them. Emma Morley dreams to be an inspirational writer and to make a difference in her life and everything around it, and Dexter Mayhew pictures himself successful and wealthy, although he is not certain just how he might achieve this. They are two very different people, with different dispositions and dreams. However, the gravity between them proves to be more powerful as David Nicholls gives his readers a glimpse into the highlights and challenges of their friendship, their struggles with coming and going lovers, their triumphs and downfalls, and finally their complete surrender to each other’s longing hearts. The book is both humorous and touching, though nothing maudlin. It is not a cliché love story about two mesmerized lovers, instead it is about two ordinary people on their way to self discovery, the turbulence of reality and the abysmal emptiness of their existence with out each other’s presence. The novel is not as riveting as expected, but only for the reason that it is more realistic compared to books about people falling helplessly and zanily in love with each other, with nothing to cease their destiny. One Day does not offer any of that mawkish sentimentality. Nicholls weaves a story about friendship and matrimony, life and death, and the beautiful and ugly sides of love-bound people. One Day conveys how dreams navigate us into reality, how reality destroys dreams, and how one person can pick up the broken pieces and recreate a reality we have never dreamed of. One Day is recommended for people who like to read about love stories that are not entirely happy.
