Healthbridge: The Importance Of Exercise

I drag myself to the gym several times a week. The drive to Healthbridge is agonizing because most of time, especially in bone chilling weather and when I'm working thirty hours a week on top of school, I rather be curled up in bed reading or catching up on my latest Netflix addiction Shameless. But exercising is important, and I try to squeeze in a good workout in between the several other things sucking up my time. I'm a biomedical science major; I understand the science behind why exercise is good for the body, but I also have the common sense to understand that the way physical education is taught is not intense enough for students to benefit. For example, today we pulled each other around the gym on towel. . .what are the students getting...show more content...

I can always use improvement in my style and I have been experimenting with semicolons because I've always been a little unclear on how to use them. In my proposal piece I did find myself combining two sentences with a semicolon while I was in the editing stages of my writing. At the end of my assessment of the problem I originally ended the paragraph with a short sentenced, which is something I used a lot of in my personal statement, followed by another sentence. I toyed around with different ways to phrase my ideas and decided to explain to my readers in an up front manner: "Education is versatile; recently, there has been a big push to innovate the way school is led and giving students more say in their education will lead to better performance academically and interpersonally" (Elliott). What I like about semicolons is that you still have a pause after the word versatile similarity to if I would have ended the sentence with a period and started a new sentence. I plan on using them more in my writing. I also italicized the word and to really emphasize that giving students more options will put the students at an advantage on more than one level. I always think there is room to improve with style and writing in general, but overall I used a lot of different techniques which makes my writing stand out and makes my paper worthy of an

Being fit can give you immediate benefit of improved vigour, and it may offer long–term benefits as well.

# Gain More Energy. As you exercise regularly, your entire body becomes more efficient. Your heart begins to pump more blood with each beat and to beat fewer times each minute. Your body develops the ability to make more oxygen available to your cells. That means more energy–greater productivity, more stamina, and less fatigue.

# Feel Good. Exercise makes you feel good, both physically and mentally. It gives you a psychological lift and strengthens your sense of accomplishment. The discipline associated with exercise also makes you feel good about yourself: "I feel good that I walked today," or "When I run, I feel I have control over one area of my life."

# Look Good. Regular exercise plays an important role in helping to reduce body fat and weight and to develop muscle. Fitness can give you a better–looking, better–proportioned body: a flatter abdomen, firmer thighs, and slimmer hips.

# Feel Younger. Increasing your activity level can reverse or slow the changes that many people think are simply the unavoidable results of aging. In reality, lack of exercise usually reduces flexibility, strength, blood vessel elasticity, and lung functions; slows reaction time and metabolism; and increases body fat between ages 30 and 60.

# Build A StrongerHeart. Regular exercise may help reduce or modify some of the risk factors associated with heart disease, such as high

Exercise and eating healthy are two of the most important things you need to do to take care of your body properly. Both exercise, and eating healthy, have many advantages and benefits. They help with multiple things needed throughout your life. These things include growing physically, mentally, and if you are religious, spiritually as well. All of this adds up to your body functioning in the highest and best way possible. Exercise, or physical activity helps your body in many ways. For example, exercise helps control the weight of a human. It helps prevent people gaining unwanted weight and helps people who have unwanted weight to lose it. This is what causes us to be sore. The muscles then build back up, becoming stronger than before. (lifehacker.com) People still need to be careful when they exercise because they can hurt themselves or overexert themselves while doing it. Being a little sore for a 24–48 hour period is normal but when being sore is a severe pain, it was probably caused by overexertion. (lifehacker.com)

For people who want to lose weight when they exercise they need to take a completely different approach. Instead of doing high–intensity workout for short periods of time, they need to do the exact opposite. Brian Parr from the Department of Exercise and Sports Science at the University of South Carolina says: "When you exercise for a longer duration, you're going to use the slow twitch fibers that are really good at burning fat. If you went and did a couple hundred meter sprints for your workout, it only works the fast muscle fibers, and they use primarily carbohydrates and don't burn that much fat at all.

For example, when you get on an elliptical or treadmill you can push the "fat burning" button, it will be longer and lower intensity because that favors the muscles that are going to burn more fat. So if you do a jog instead of a sprint, you're burning more fat." (lifehacker.com) Even through all of this you need to have some variety because some exercises just burn the fat in

Sport and exercise psychology is a mandatory aspect of the sport science discipline. This discipline contributes to the various professional practices associated with physical activities such as – teaching of physical education, recreation and health promotion, and kinesiology related professions – because it plays a mental role for the participants. Sport and exercise psychologists view physical activity in several different ways: physical activity as a tool for health, physical activity as a tool for human potential, and physical activity as a tool for social change. Exercise and sport psychology is thought to be an extremely important aspect of physical activity and sport, which allow people to reach their human potential. The importance of exercise and sport psychology in increasing human potential can be seen by looking at how it affects high performance athletes, sport consultants, and the usage of visualization and imagery in this discipline. High performance athletes are consistently near their maximum potential as far as physical ability and strength are concerned. This has caused views to be shifted towards exercise and sport psychology to help the athletes take the next step towards their final goals. To take this next step, exercise and sport psychologists look at several areas. For example, they may look at competitiveness, emotional control, mental toughness, positive attitude, safety consciousness, and team orientation of an athlete to help establish where the athlete would be able to improve mentally (Jones, Neuman, Altmann, & Dreschler, 2001). Once the specific area they wish to improve has been found, they can begin to work with the athlete to

One of the biggest shift that I have notice occur is the fact that Twitter has become a widely known, and controversial, platform. Twitter has been around for a long time now, but in the past 6 years that I have had one, I do not think I have ever heard as much talk of it as I do now. It has also not been very common for a president to speak to the public via twitter. Now, however, it seems very normal for the president of the United States to address the people through 180 characters. A year ago I would never have predicted that our internet usage could possibly be limited through policies. I never would have predicted that some of my loved ones would be losing their DACA. I would not have considered it normal for a president to publicly side with white supremacists. Most importantly, I did not expect a feeling of nervousness and anger to captivate the people of America. I think that as people process everything that occurs in society, these feelings become more and more normal. Physical activities allow children to use their creativity while developing their mind, agility, and physical, cognitive, and emotional strengths. Physical activity is important to healthy brain development and it is through physical activities that children engage and interact in the world around them, therefore leading them positively in to middle childhood. "For children, physical activity enhances fitness, fosters growth and development, and helps teach them about their world" (Elliot & Sanders, 2002).

Physical Fitness and Mental Wellbeing Essay

Physical Activity is undeniably good for everyone, not only does it keep you fit and healthy but when started at a young age, it can set up good habits for life. Sometimes however, people do not take care of their physical wellbeing, resulting in obesity and other eating disorders which can be detrimental to their health.

Obesity is the condition of being seriously overweight. It is now considered a global health epidemic by the World Health Organization (2000) (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). It is because of this high level of cognitive function that physical activity and nutrition are extremely important (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). They affect the child's physical wellbeing in terms of energy levels, growth and the ability to concentrate (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010).

As children grow they continue to need physical activity. One of the methods of exercise that is popular with children in the middle childhood age is rough and tumble play or 'play fighting' (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). Unfortunately, this sort of play is often discouraged by schools because of the possibility that someone may become injured. (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010). Teachers must find the balance between protecting children from getting hurt and allowing them to run and jump to release the copious amounts of energy that they have to burn (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010).

Another unfortunate hindrance to physical activity in schools is the notion that physical activity takes away from time that could be used for academic studies. This is unjustified however, because children of this age group are unable to sit and concentrate for long periods of time without being able to get up and move (McDevitt & Ormrod, 2010).

Teachers can play a large role when it comes to addressing and preventing obesity. Because children spend such a large portion of their time with the teacher, it is the teacher

The Importance of Physical Exercise

What is exercise? The actual definition of exercise is; to use repeatedly in order to strengthen or develop, but to make it simpler, exercise is doing programs and workouts to keep fit, for example, running, hiking, bicycling, and any active sport.

Most Americans do little or no exercise during work or rest hours. Today there aren't many jobs requiring intensephysical activity. Instead of walking, people use automobiles or public transportation. Instead of being physically active, people usually watch TV in their free time. Some sports such as bowling, golf, and tennis (doubles) provide some exercise, but do not provide as much exercise as other more vigorous sports. Exercise is very important...show more content...

This happens when a person exercises too hard for too long, this mostly happens to people that have been inactive for a while.

In some situations, people have died while exercising. In these situations, most of the deaths have been by overexertion in people who have had heart problems. For people who are under the age of thirty, these heart conditions are usually from heart defect present at birth. For the people that are over the age of 40, the heart condition is usually coronary artery, which is the buildup of deposits of fats in the heart's blood vessels. A lot of these deaths have followed by warning signs such as chest pain, lightheartedness, fainting, and extreme breathlessness. These are symptoms that should not be ignored and medical attention should be advised immediately.

Exercising too hard is not good for anyone, however, and is especially dangerous for out–of–shape, middle–aged and older people. It is very important for all people to follow a gradual and sound exercise program.

If you are wondering how long it would take to be in shape, think about this; look at how long you have been out of shape and it will take about that much time to get back in shape if you exercise properly.

With some of this information earlier stated, exercise seems pretty dangerous, but it's not very dangerous at all, you just need to be careful. No

Another disease that is commonly found in the US, but can be prevented by physical activity is Diabetes. Diabetes is a disease when the body does not produce enough insulin making sugar levels very high. However, when muscles are in action they can take the sugar/glucose from the blood without the help of insulin. The amount of physical activity necessary for prevention is minimum and does not take up much time. "Research suggests that 2 1/2 hours per week of even leisurely physical activity–like brisk walking–is enough to significantly improve glucose tolerance." By going walking instead of sitting by a television screen, one can prevent a disease like diabetes which requires constant medication. Decisions like taking steps instead of elevator can make a huge difference to one's health.

Besides for the aforementioned, being active strengthens the body, making it more reliable. Activity works the bones and muscles, making them able to handle more. Bones are living tissue. "Weight–bearing physical activity causes new bone tissue to form, and this makes bones stronger. This kind of physical activity also makes muscles stronger. Bones and muscles both become stronger when muscles push and tug against bones during physical activity." Exercise Physiology

Introduction

While exercising, one's body encounters a large amount of stress and the body works to adapt to these changes with several responses from different systems of the body. The body is experiencing all of these physiological changes to make sure that it remains in homeostatic state.

Homeostasis is "the tendency for any organism to maintain a stable internal environment, even when the external environment is changing" (Tomicek & Waters, 2017, p. 55). The body maintains homeostasis by using negative feedback loops. Negative feedback loops are designed to self–correct changes within the body (Tomicek & Waters, 2017, p. 56). During exercise, the body responds to changes in body temperature, oxygen concentration, carbon dioxide concentration, heart rate, hemoglobin saturation, and blood pressure by communicating with the Central Nervous System of the body.

This exercise physiology experiment is most important to exercise physiologists. By using this experiment, exercise physiologists are able to monitor and analyze their patient's fitness and determine whether they are in a healthy state or not, based upon the results of the exercise physiology experiment (Exercise Physiologist, 2017). The data collected from this experiment can also be used by college professors who teach human biology classes and researchers who are studying exercise physiology more in depth.

Merely not using a person's body is harmful. Not being active results in a person's muscles becoming weak and out of condition. The effectiveness of a person's heart and lungs will decrease. Adults should have around thirty to sixty minutes of physical activity four to six times a week. Two hours and thirty minutes is the minimum a fully developed person needs to lessen the risk of having some type of chronic disease later in life ("Information").

Physical fitness has two main classifications–performance related and health related. People have different performance related requirements in accordance with their occupation but all people have the same health related requirements (The World). Then there are two types ofexercise that helps tone a person's body while increasing its endurance. These are aerobic and anaerobic. Aerobic exercise is exercise that uses the muscles and bones. Cardio activities are a good example of this, such as running or biking. This type of exercise increases the strength of a person's heart and boosts their lung capacity. Anaerobic exercise is an intense but short amount of exercise (Payment). Since it is only for a brief amount of time, it does not require the amount of oxygen aerobic exercise does. Instead it uses glycogen which comes from the sugar in a person's blood. An example of this exercise is weight lifting or sprinting. A person's requires both anaerobic and aerobic exercise for good health. Simply doing a cardio work out is not healthy, and for a person to see real results there must be some activity like weight lifting ("Anaerobic").

By performing some type of physical activity each

Cells depend on the oxygen and nutrients supplied by the blood to do their various jobs–from the heart muscle cells that keep your heart pumping to the brains cells that keep you thinking and coordinating your countless activities. Being active boosts high–density lipoprotein, or "good" cholesterol and decreases unhealthy triglycerides. This, in effect, protects against heart disease and stroke. Nerve cells benefit from better blood flow.

Physical activity is able to shift neurons in your brain from a revved, stressed state–more vulnerable to dangerous cardiac rhythms and heart attacks–to a relaxed state.

This is important because you want this system working smoothly so that it efficiently responds to changing demands for oxygen, speeding up the rate when you are active and slowing it down when you are at rest.

It also improves your metabolism – the ongoing chemical processes within living cells and organisms that are necessary for the maintenance of life.

For example, muscle tissue is the biggest consumer of glucose (blood sugar that has been broken down from dietary carbohydrates) and physical activities helps keep muscles utilizing blood sugar. This helps prevent insulin levels from rising dangerously in the body–a condition that leads to diabetes and damage to the nerves, blood vessels, and the liver. These all lower your risk of developing a life–threatening condition.
