TOSHIO SUZUKI

Toshio Suzuki Toshio Suzuki's Soul Federation provides a detailed presentation of how World Federation benefits humanity. His book is unorthodox and, in a unorthod sense, eccentric. But it contains many truths that have not been mentioned. For example, idea on the time is closer to the truth than the Einstein's theory of relativity. Or, the cause of poverty is explained from a new po viewpoint. These thought will be a common sense in the future. His works are exhibited in his website. Welcome EDITOR’S NOTE

Look Back. Move Forward hen was the first time you succeeded over something you really wanted? When was the last time you cried? Or jumped for joy? Or just simply enjoying the warmth of the day? If you could go back in time, would you? Everyone has at least once in his or her life thought: “If I could go back in time, I would...” Fairly enough, all of us have something in our past that we want to change or simply want to experience again. It may be the good old days with friends or about hasty actions and conclusions, lack of courage or persistence, etc. Many people are fascinated with the idea of time travel. I, for once, dreamt of having a time travel device in my pocket and magically go back a month or years ago, anytime under any circumstance I want. Who

would not want to place the pieces of their lives to where they want it to be? One of the most popular topics in the history of science fiction is the idea of time travel. In literature and cinema, this topic has been exploited countless times. But the most essential question here is: how can it affect one’s entire life in the present? Having a time machine is an amazingly attractive idea. Being able to go back in time and change the mistakes we’ve done or grab the opportunities we’ve missed could make life so much easier. But the greater scheme of life is this: living without this aggregate teaches us responsibility. Being able to commit mistakes is being human. In the grand school of life, mistake is everyone’s teacher and it makes us take the test

before it teaches the lesson. Having only the time we have in the present, we carry the responsibility of our actions and decisions. And it builds up who we are the day after. Going back could be the possibility to long for. But it is braver to embrace what is in the present. The events of the past is not something we can change; it is the game changer, it is what changes us. In connection to this, our editorial team has carefully selected some of the movies to feature this month that highlights, perhaps emphasize, how the past connects to the present. These movies are your best choice which are the classic action and comedy film of all time. Here, we’ll get to see how the events of their past lead to the situation in the present. With all the characters coming to age, there’s a lot of surprises, revelations and even more adventures as their story continues. Before I leave it here, here’s a note for you: We are only allowed to look back. Our feet are not for walking backwards but for moving forwards.

ne is up for an agenda of its own to uncover the truth behind a friend’s untimely death while the other is up for a new adventure to tackle the biggest enemy from within. Different crimes to hurdle. Different battles to win. But they both are giving us one big actioncomedy sequels more than we can handle. This summer, two of the iconic action films with an equal touch of humor is coming back on the big screen! That leather coat and black suits are about to solve a mystery and save the universe once more. And just as you think it’s just another story to tell, they’re actually suiting up for a more vicious and deadly encounter; and it’s not everything you remembered. Here’s a bit of information for you to dig in:

“More Shaft Than You Can Handle” It’s nothing more obvious why. The movie poster unites three generations of Shafts. If one cat that won’t cop out when there’s danger all about is more than enough to blow our minds, a trio is so much to handle. It’s been more than four decades since audiences are introduced to Richard Roundtree’s smoothtalking private detective, the original John Shaft, then came Samuel L. Jackson as his nephew, John Shaft II in a 2000 sequel. Now, the fifth installment of the Shaft franchise is back on the case. The Shaft welcomes a new member of the family, John Shaft Jr. - John Shaft II’s estranged son, a cyber security expert with a degree from MIT - who’s needing his family’s help to uncover the truth behind his best friend’s untimely death. He needs to team up with his elders to solve the

24

ISSUE 60 / paperclipsmagazine.com

mystery. Though he’s joined the FBI, which is kind of an anti-Shaft value, there’s no denying family. From there, another adventure in the criminal underworld of Harlem is about to begin! Though this marks the third rebooting of the Shaft series, it takes place in the same continuity but with a few added humor that comes with intergenerational squabbling to justify a new variation on Shaft. While Jackson’s version of Shaft was lean and mean, he’s dialed it down this time. He may not be quite as crazy and cynical just as the last time we saw him, but he still has that extremely dangerous yet funny character. The original Shaft, Richard Roundtree will reprise his most famous ‘bad mother’ role in the 1971 blaxploitation film, though being a grandpa this time doesn’t show any sign of his detective stunts slowing down. And the newest member of the Shaft men Jessie Usher (Survivor’s Remorse) completes the trio of Shaft generations. As the trailer revealed, it’s not the ‘bad mutha--shut your mouth’ idea but will pivot more into action-comedy territory as is the emphasis on humor. What remains constant though is Shaft’s eternally cool sense of style: always great leather. The film comes from director Tim Story (Barbershop) and written by Kenya Barris (Black-ish) and Alex Barnow. Away from the trio of Shafts, the cast includes the likes of Regina Hall, (Little, The Hate U Give), Alexandra Shipp (X-Men: Apocalypse), Matt Lauria (Friday Night Lights), Titus Welliver (Bosch), and Wu-Tang Clan’s Method Man. The forthcoming film surely brings audiences with three iconic detectives for the price of one!

Men in Black in Expanding Universe Before you get too hyped, here’s your takeaway: Will Smith’s Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones’ Agent K are not coming back! But they’re introducing Agent H and Agent M in Chris Hemsworth and Tessa Thompson’s dynamic duo on their behalf. The new pair of secret agents to battle with extraterrestrial forces will stir up every Marvel movie fans’ excitement for the film features the proven chemistry of the two actors in this seemingly quick reunion of Thor and Valkyrie in the delightful chaos of 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. If there’s anything we can agree on, it’s that Hemsworth and Thompson make one hell of a team. Seeing them getting back in touch is sure of an action packed comedy adventure. And this film proves us more than right! Men in Black: International shifts its focus away from the former agents to a new generation of suit-sporting enforcers. And along with its new cast of characters existing in the same universe that the prior films belong to, the

story will expand its focus globally, elevating its mission from a local scale to a global stake. And though changing the setting to London gives the franchise a fresh new start, some aspects need to remain. Emma Thompson will reprise her role as Agent O to provide some continuity between the prior trilogy and the new film. The spinoff is set to be directed by a new face behind the camera - F. Gary Gray, Friday and Fate of the Furious director. Despite mixed reviews, the Men in Black series is undoubtedly a lucrative proposition. Will the new agents’ humorous quips live up to their predecessors? So, how about a trio of black heroes that uses their black rage along with intelligence and courage as their own resources to solve a mystery or better yet, a delightful duo of new agents to fight against the evils of the galaxy and save the universe once more? Either way, what’s not to like? These two sequels hitting the big screen on the same day are bringing chaos in theater seats. Mark your calendars on the 14th of June for they will welcome the summer of 2019 with lots of guts and guns

Reintroducing The Beatles to a World That Forgot Them PG-13 | T E X T BY N A N C Y P R I C E

What would happen when there is only one man in the world who can remember the greatest band in history? This is the concept being explored in the film Yesterday. Technically not a time-travel film, if you ask me, this film may just be a rebirth film where the protagonists woke up after his accident in an alternate world where The Beatles doesn’t exist. Of course, that isn’t exactly what goes down in the film.

Jack Malik, a struggling singer-songwriter, is about to let go of his dream despite the full support and encouragement of his one and only fan, his childhood friend Ellie. However, he may need to pull the plug on his retirement plans when a road accident, and coincidentally a freaky global blackout, wipes out the greatest band in history The Beatles - from everyone’s memories; except his. As the only one who remembers the band’s chart-topping hits, he is about to embark on the road of stardom.

Spotlight Inner Struggle Now here’s where the struggle comes in. Jack’s greatest wish is to be a famous musician, though he never realized that dream in so far as his past is concerned. However, his current situation provides him a powerful arsenal of musical masterpieces that are proven to go down in history as classic hits. The Beatles is a group composed of four creative genius; there is no wonder how much the masses love their songs. As an artist, Jack is therefore caught in an inner struggle. He can use the songs to shoot to fame and realize the dream that he has always pursued all his life. Or he can forget it and just continue with the less appealing option of retiring from the musical community. What can he do with songs that aren’t his, after all? As a creative talent himself, won’t it be plagiarism if he does use The Beatles’ songs? However, now that no one knows of these songs, would using them for his own still be considered plagiarism? The songs no longer exist in his current reality; who can sue him for plagiarism anyway? If you are in Jack’s shoes, what kind of choice will you make?

Price of Fame In Jack’s head is a collection of the iconic band’s songs - a key that can catapult him to the pinnacle of music. In the beginning, Jack was satisfied with the small popularity those songs brought him. From

38

ISSUE 60 / paperclipsmagazine.com

his small inner circle, his ‘creative genius’ soon attracts the attention of more and more fans. The more people cheer for him, the more he feels braver to use the songs. Truth be told, it was an addiction waiting to happen. It is apparent that the songs will become classic hits the same way it did when the original iconic band sang them. When a music producer came to sign Jack, his road to superstar status became even wider. But will this agent really be good to Jack? Or is that comically sinister vibe in the trailer a sign of a storm? Despite being in between his guilt of using songs not of his own creation and the elation brought by fame, Jack still continues to sing The Beatles’ songs and claim credit for them. As his popularity grew, he eventually realized that he is growing apart from the person who had been there for him since the beginning - Ellie. Is losing Ellie the price of fame that he has to pay? Or is there something more? Award-winning director Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) and Oscar-nominated screenwriter Richard Curtis (Notting Hill) brings to us this rock-n-roll comedy film Yesterday. This film may not be the first of its kind to explore this kind of speculative fiction concept, but it is surely the first one in Hollywood cinema. Opens in theaters this June 28, this film stars Himesh Patel (EastEnders), Lily James (Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again), Kate McKinnon (The Spy Who Dumped Me), and many more. Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr are also speculated to cameo in the film

Dark Phoenix might be the 12th in a long line of X-Men movies but it’s the beginning of a brandnew trilogy. Are you anxious to see how this new series kicks off? As with all Marvel movies, we just can’t get enough and we’ll tell you everything we know so far about the Dark Phoenix movie.

A Darker X-Men It seems like nowadays the trend is to make each movie a darker, grittier reboot. This is a trend that Marvel has apparently decided to take, watching the trailers reveal an even darker X-Men universe than we’re used to seeing on the big screen. If

50

ISSUE 60 / paperclipsmagazine.com

we’re to omit the movies Logan and Deadpool II, then the last entry in the X-Men Series will apparently be the X-Men Apocalypse. While previous movies have a lot of light-hearted moments and jokes, that won’t be the case in Dark Phoenix. Actor Evan Peters, who plays the role Quicksilver, compared the tone of the film to that of the movie X-Men: First Class. While there is a little humor thrown in, the overall tone of the movie is pretty serious. This will be a much darker installment than X-Men: Apocalypse and there isn’t a lot of room for goofing around. Peter added that there will be darker subject matter and the storyline. Dark Phoenix is a serious dramatic film about the internal strife of Phoenix and Jean Grey.

Although the tone might be somber, the movie promises to be powerful as well.

The Dark Phoenix Saga We know that Dark Phoenix will be the first of three movies which tell the story of the Dark Phoenix Saga. If you’re not a fan of the comic books, then this may not mean anything to you but comic fans know that the Dark Phoenix Saga is the most important saga pertaining to Jean Grey and arguably one of the most important in the entire X-Men series. What is the Dark Phoenix Saga? It ran in uncanny X-men number 129 to 138 back in 1960. If you’ve seen all the X-men movies, you’re at least a little but familiar with this. The movie X-men: The Last Stand was very loosely based on the Dark Phoenix Saga. Now we get to see it play out indepth over the course of the Dark Phoenix Trilogy. In addition to her impressive telekinetic powers, Jean Grey has the power of a mysterious being called Phoenix force within her. This force is incredibly even the mighty Jean Grey struggles with it. Over time, this power gets increasingly difficult to control and becomes a massive threat to the entire universe. Naturally, the X-Men needs to stop the destructive power of the Dark Phoenix but without harming their friend Jean Grey.

threat of superhero fatigue is real considering how long the X-Men franchise has been around. On top of that, there’s also the fact that Dark Phoenix involves the same saga as the previous movie X-Men: The Last Stand. With Dark Phoenix, things are being shaken up and take on a different approach to things. Simon Kimberg has written three of the previous X-Men movies and is now directing Dark Phoenix. This means that he knows where the franchise has been better than anyone else and knows how to take it in a new direction. Of course, the movie is still going to be full of mutants capable of performing fantastic feats so making that feel grounded won’t be an easy task. The cast and crew share the same vision of what the movie should look like and are confident it’s something audiences will be happy with.

Expect New X-Men Characters Actress Jessica Chastain has been confirmed to be playing the role of Queen Lilandra in the Dark Phoenix movie. Many people believed she’ll end up being a foe of the X-Men despite being a mostly good character in the comic books. Marvel loves cranking out movies about superheroes and as long as that’s profitable, we can’t see them stopping anytime soon. But the

We wanted people to know beyond just the Raven/Mystique of it all that it is a movie where everybody is at risk...

If we’ve learned anything from Avengers: Infinity War, it’s that superhero movies aren’t shy about killing characters and the X-Men franchise is not an exception to this. We already saw the Dark Phoenix saga rack up a body count in a previous film during X-Men: The Last Stand when Jean Grey transforms into Dark Phoenix and takes out both Cyclops and Professor X. It won’t be surprising for something similar to happen in Dark Phoenix and reports seem to confirm that not all of the characters will survive the film. Unlike many movie deaths in the X-Men franchise, this one is going to be permanent. To further strengthen this idea, Fox released an image of several X-Men members attending a funeral. But whose funeral are they at? As whose body is to be buried, we aren’t sure yet. One obvious guess would be Jean Grey herself who would then rise up and become the Dark Phoenix. Mystique and Beast had been around for a long time and one of them might not survive the first installment of the Dark Phoenix trilogy. “I think that one of the things that is true of this movie, and we wanted people to know going into the movie, is that it’s a different kind of X-MEN movie,” said Kinberg. “It’s not an X-MEN movie where people get knocked down and stand up immediately.

Storyline It’s an X-MEN movie where it’s more real, it’s grittier. I’d say it’s more dangerous. We wanted people to know that this, again, was a movie where, if Dark Phoenix lost control, it wasn’t just the kind of thing where at the end of the movie all the pieces would be put back together the way it often happens in X-MEN and really a lot of comic book movies,” added Kinberg. If this is the final Fox X-Men movie, which it probably is, Kinberg wanted to give its narrative some dramatic weight. “We wanted people to know beyond just the Raven/Mystique of it all that it is a movie where everybody is at risk. Because of this thing that has happened to Jean, and Jean most especially is at risk,” quoted Simon Kinberg.

X-Men into the MCU or not? In the world of comic books, you have Marvel and DC but to break things further, you have Marvel characters owned by Disney and Marvel characters owned by 21st Century Fox. The latter owns the X-Men, The Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. All of those heroes fall under the Marvel umbrella but they don’t exist in the Marvel Cinematic Universe however, Disney has now acquired 21st Century Fox which means that this barrier is slowly but surely going to be torn down. Disney CEO, Robert Iger, released a statement which helps to clarify some things about the future of the MCU. He claims that he is looking forward to expanding the MCU to include X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Deadpool. That is quite a shake up and things are changing for Marvel Studios as well. President Kevin Feige has announced the fourth Avengers movie will be a conclusion to this era. After that, it’s expected to focus on franchises outside of the Avengers. Though you don’t have to worry about Thanos showing up during Dark Phoenix, keep in

mind that it will be setting the stage for things to come to MCU. Although X-Men: Apocalypse was generally considered to be lack-luster, we are hoping these speculations about the Dark Phoenix represents a return to some of the things which made the X-Men comics so great. T E X T BY B A R B A . P O O L E Author of The Diaries of Liberty the Pug

n the beginning, I was looking for a new puppy for Terry, my husband. I was employed by Superior Court at the time and it would be a few more years before I retired. Terry was already enjoying his retirement with his bestie sidekick, our beautiful Sheltie “Brittany.” Sadly Brittany had been diagnosed with cancer. I desperately wanted to find a pet to help us both through the inevitable loss. I knew Terry, especially, would be devastated and lonely without Brittany.

We were told the little pug had stayed past her time in the pet store and was being sent back. Back where, we asked? The employee shrugged his shoulders. Terry asked what the cost would be for us to take her home. The price now reduced, we paid, and walked out of the store with a very bewildered, precious and weak little body of a little pug girl that was already six months old, she had been in her little glass case far too long.

I took a look in our local pet store and I found a little pug. We have had pugs in the past and I knew Terry would love her, but the price on her little window was far more than I could afford. Sadly I walked away. That evening, I mentioned the little pug to Terry. Terry said “Let’s go and take a look at this little girl together.” Entering the pet store we could see the little pug looking so lonely as she lay facing away from us, and her little glass case no longer was showing a price for her. Sighing, and assuming she was sold we began walking out of the store. Terry stopped walking and held my arm and said wait! Let us ask someone if the little pug has been sold.

It was Memorial Day, and we named our new fur baby Liberty. We felt we had truly liberated our precious beautiful new little pug girl from that awful pet store. Liberty was able to spend eight weeks with her big sister Brittany, Brittany taught Liberty everything she knew, and they became close friends before our beloved Brittany sadly crossed over the rainbow bridge. Today I believe Brittany is now smiling down watching over Liberty and her two younger sister pugs, Ebony Rose and Pippa. Soon after we brought Liberty home we realized that our precious little Liberty had been born in a puppy mill and was gravely ill. Liberty had many health issues due to inbreeding

We spent the first few months trying to keep Liberty alive. Liberty had eye surgeries for her damaged eyes. Liberty had ingrown eyelashes that had been scraping her eyes. With her eyes bulging she was unable to close her eyelids down over her eyes. Liberty had a hole in one eye, infections, parasites, pneumonia, and was malnourished. This little pug girl had to fight for her life. The first of many times over the past eleven years. Liberty and I want to share her journey and educate children through Liberty’s stories. Life for animals would be so different with love, caring and friendship. We must help the next generation understand that Pets R Family. I have made Liberty a star in her very own books. “The Diaries of liberty the Pug” children’s book series. Due to Liberty’s health and blindness we gave her two loving and adorable sister pugs Ebony Rose and Pippa. Liberty will never feel alone. Liberty’s books are written from her heart. I have been able to observe Liberty’s journey from a puppy mill to her forever home first hand. It is an ongoing learning experience that I live with and will never forget. Liberty has been blind for ten years. Today Liberty has Elongated Soft Palate Syndrome, arthritis, and much more. Liberty is a fighter, a trooper who loves her life and does not know the word quit. Liberty is small, and blind but she can be ornery, difficult, funny and a handful. Liberty rules our house. The sign over our front door that her daddy made for her, says it all “Libby’s Place” Liberty loves life.

new friends, and sisters learning to get along with each other, sharing, caring and respect. Visits to the dogtors, shopping for toys and coping with visitors. Children love the beautiful illustrated pictures and learn how to take care of their own pets giving their pet’s fresh water each day, picking up poop, and learning to love animals and understanding all creatures big and small need love. The Diaries of Liberty the Pug, Liberty’s books are making a difference worldwide. Children call Liberty’s books their “Happy Books.” Books they can curl up with reading to their own pets and each other over and over again, Laughing and loving with Liberty and all of her friends.

Liberty is very soft, cuddly, and needy, loves her two pug sisters Ebony Rose and Pippa. Liberty loves walks in Kiwanis Parks and outings in her stroller, curling up with mum and dad and her sisters. I have given Liberty a mighty voice for the voiceless reaching children worldwide. Liberty’s books interact with her readers, and are educational and fun. Little Liberty’s life will have not been in vain. Liberty’s books teach loving and caring for animals worldwide. Kids today are our hope for the future. The new generation who will say No to puppy mills. No to animal abuse because Liberty’s readers are wiser for having read Liberty’s book series. Liberty’s books are her true diary sharing her days going for walks in Kiwanis Park, trips to the beach, birthday parties,

If you have children? If you have pets? If you love reading? If you care for animals? Liberty’s books should be part of your life. Liberty’s books will leave you with a full heart and a smile. overty. War. Conflicts. Environment destruction. The world is in chaos. The universe is dying. Today’s society is still fighting the battle of centuries old that has gone more drastic, more threatening than ever before. People struggle with hunger, civilians die of war, conflicts arise after conflicts. Peace, contentment and happiness have become a commodity. Realizing all these, where does the world stand? While economists and political elites were in search of a likely solution to the pressing issues, one man found an innovative conclusion – ideas that are introduced in a profoundly new way; truths that have not been recognized or yet bypassed. For example, a thought on the time is closer to the truth than the theory of relativity of Einstein or the cause of poverty is explained from a new viewpoint. Back in his junior years, Toshio Suzuki began to think about World Federation. Having studied Economics, he pursued his career as a casual lecturer in a university. He became immensely involved of the matter and conducted a research on Economics. There began the establishment of World Federation as his lifework. In this age of continued wars, arising conflicts, and unresolved issues of poverty in many parts of the world, the affluent society needs a new appropriate philosophy. There are many aspects of philosophy such as religion, politics, economy, science,

sports, arts, and literature. Even philosophy, in itself, is just one of the subjects in social science. However, the main consideration in Toshio’s work only involves politics, economy, and private life or religion. In the light of economy, Toshio is concerned with development economy which, in its nature, concerns the economic development of developing countries. He believes that to promote the growth of economy is to improve the lives of people. He further argues that the World Federation and World Government is an ideal economic policy, therefore it is necessary to establish it. World Federation here refers to the worldwide federation of independent countries. The World Government, on the other hand, serves as the central government of the World Federation. Its primary purpose is to manage military force, issue currency, and resolve other issues that each country cannot solve for itself. Some other aspects like religion, economic system, and tradition are dealt with and are left free to each country. Basically, the regime it advocates is the division of politics and religion. The establishment of these two is believed to gain benefits to people and to the world as a whole. The basic benefits come: the reduction or prevention of war which would likely result to the reduction of death and wounded people by war and military expenditure; the issuance of international common currency which will eventually lead to the removal of

fluctuating exchange rate; and an increase in employment opportunities which eventually leads to the eradication of poverty. “In the politics of world, the first priority is the benefits of world as a whole or the benefits of society as a whole. If the world becomes better, our country will become better. If our country becomes better, our life will become better.” Toshio Suzuki But political peace and economic richness do not necessarily address the basic philosophy of life - the philosophy of how we can be happy. There is more to happiness than just the presence of peace in the absence of war. Under the regime of World Federation and World Government, people must find their happiness outside war, outside the free and tedious society. Happiness here is considered in a religious viewpoint. If we want to be happy, we must consider the essence of our world and that of life. After that, we also must consider the essence of the soul. True contentment and joy of an individual is found in the depths of his heart, in the depths of his soul. The philosophy here is very simple: follow the Will of God by doing good. Philosophy drives action. Having the philosophy to be happy encourages one to do things to be happy. True happiness here is presented in the light of following the will of God, thus, doing good in our daily lives. Happiness is acquired through the nature or character of good doing. “Truly, good things shall become a common sense.” - Toshio Suzuki World Federation and World Government help achieve a political and economic situation

necessary for human happiness. If rightly established, it will become heaven on earth. Considering all these things, we consider what we must do. This consideration, as the author believes, will become a common sense in the 21st century. The book Soul Federation is indeed a deviation to conventional viewpoint of world and world issues. Poverty, war, conflicts, and environmental degradation are all detrimental to society. And yet, the unorthodox and eccentric ideology of one man might just be what the world needs. “The establishment of World Federation is my lifework. If I am reincarnated into a next life and the World Federation has not been established yet, my lifework will be again the establishment of it. This is the command from God. And I will work in such manner.”

ISSUE 60 / paperclipsmagazine.com

The most notorious slasher in history is back on the silver screen. The infamous killer doll is digging again his share in the spotlight. Child’s Play reboot comes with a different direction, both in story and thematically. Rather than a voodoo ritual and a hunk of plastic possessed by the soul of a serial killer, the reimagining of the film depicts the terrors of artificial intelligence of a robotic toy. Here, technology becomes the villain. This time around, it will not only involve ‘gory’ moments but horror blended with uncanny humor.

Mark Hamill (Star Wars, Joker in Batman: The Animated Series) will be voicing the iconic character of Chucky. The film, which is a reimagining of the producers of It, also stars Aubrey Plaza, Gabriel Bateman and Brian Tyree Henry. It’s only up to you to revisit your friend till the end once again on the big screen when Child’s Play slashes into theaters on the 21st of June. Did you miss him? He sure missed you. Wanna play?
