Welcome Editor’s Note Blockbuster Battle Royale

t was supposed to be a silver screen battle royale – with the supposed same-month release of highly-anticipated films such as Alita: Battle Angel, Aquaman, Spider-Verse, Bumblebee, and the Mary Poppins sequel. However, the people behind Alita’s production seem to think that they have a better chance of climbing the film rankings if they do a strategic retreat now. After all, the other movies sharpening their knives for the December battle have forerunners that had already established a stable fan base for them.

success, considering that Alita will be the first of its kind in the US movie industry. Throw in the fact that not all who adored Alita in its original form are happy with how the movie actually turned out, the said production is definitely on to a shaky start.

On the other hand, Alita may have a huge following due to the success of its original Japanese comics counterpart; but that doesn’t guarantee a box office

Well, we’ll just have to further our opinions on how Alita would fare when the movie’s executives actually finalize their release date.

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

Thus, if they avoid a head-on clash with the “movie giants” that are sure to get box office hits by moving their release date to February, then perhaps they’ve done a wise move. They’ll be able to bag the lion’s share of the market (if not the second biggest part, if How to Train Your Dragon: The Hidden World will maintain its momentum from its first two films).

Moving on, there’s much to anticipate for the movies that are to be released next month. With or without Alita: Battle Angel, the December blockbuster battle royale will continue to intensify as days pass by. We will finally be able to see if Emily Blunt can step out of the monumental shadow Julie Andrews left behind in her titular role as The New Mary Poppins. Director James Wan will also be attempting to pave a new path for future DC movies with the release of Aquaman. For the fans of the iconic transforming Volkswagen, the all-new Bumblebee movie will determine whether their call for a long-awaited Transformers franchise reboot is answered or not; will it then be a box office yay or a nay? And there’s the Spider-Verse! Our favorite Spidey will traverse to a parallel realm as he meets - and even train! other webshooter-equipped superheroes. Aren’t you excited? The Paperclips Magazine team is sure looking forward to watching these films that are fighting to become the next box office bomb. There’s no point in whetting your appetite even more for next month’s films. Go on. Flip the page. Indulge in what Issue 54 has to offer.

“What makes you different is what makes you Spider-Man.” That’s the first thing we hear when we watch the second official trailer of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse. It basically gives us a glimpse of the not-so-ordinary life of Peter Parker, the man behind the spider mask. It shows us how, aside from saving the city over and over, Peter’s life also includes endeavors such as love.

It’s Not About Peter Now

Miles’ Spider Suit

And the scene cuts to a whole new universe that seems to be an alternate universe of where Peter belongs to. Coca-Cola (a subtle ad placement right there!) is now advertised as Koca Soda. And, most importantly, the face revealed behind the Spider mask is not the usual white-skinned nerd guy but a black-skinned teenager.

Of course, every Spider-Man has his own Spider Suit. The traditional suit was mostly blue with red spider-patterned mid-section, gloves, boots, and mask. Miles’ suit, on the other hand, is mostly black with only a fewer sections of red. Let’s just overlook Miles’ original makeshift costume though.

Meet the New Spider-Man Technically, Peter is still the Spider-Man in MCU’s universe. This Spider-Verse’s Spider-Man, on the other hand, is a Brooklyn teen named Miles Morales. As we can see in the trailer, Miles’ father is a cop who – surprise! surprise! - is cynical of Spider-Man because he just “zip zaps in his little mask and answers to no one.”

16

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

Displaced Peter Parker With an experiment gone wrong, Miles Morales meets Peter Parker. This is the moment that made both Miles and Peter realize that they aren’t the one-and-only Spider-Man. While the first meeting may be unbelievable and eyeopening, the succeeding scene is just a matter of Miles further realizing that superheroes may be somewhat of a disappointment in real life as Peter shows his sloppy side in front of him.

Trailer Breakdown Be Spider-Man! Peter, despite showing an unreliable side of him to Miles at first meeting, takes on the challenge of teaching the kid how to be Spider-Man. He trains Miles to use his web shooters to travel efficiently on air.

How Many Spider-People Are There? Aside from Miles, Peter, and Gwen, there are a few Spider-People showing up in the teaser. There’s the Spider-Person from the anime world as well as the mysterious ‘Spider-Silhouette.’ To make things weirder, you also have the SpiderPerson from the Looney Tunes world. Now that all of these Spider-People have made their way to Miles’ Brooklyn, does that mean that these Spider-People’s respective supervillains have made their way there too?! Well, no matter how many comes, it is imperative that Miles, together with the other Spider-Men, must find a way to go back to their own homes. Otherwise, Miles’ Brooklyn, where all his loved ones are, will no longer be the Brooklyn that he once knew. Zip zap your way to the theaters to catch Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse this December 14!

Gwen as Spider-(Wo)Man It was a surprise to see a Spider-Woman cut into the scene of Peter and Miles’ training. However, it is an even bigger surprise that this SpiderWoman is none other than Gwen Stacey. The fans of the original Spider-Man will surely know that Gwen Stacey is one of Peter’s love interests. But now, she’s in Miles’ universe saying that she’s the Spider-Woman of another universe?! And that brings us to the question: just how many Spider-People are out there?

Is On The Move! T E X T BY N A N C Y P R I C E

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

Engines are starting; traction cities are coming! At this brink of time when Hollywood’s sequels and remakes seem to have reached peak saturation, a new universe with new characters unlikely seen before arrives. Taken from the pages of Philip Reeve’s novel, Mortal Engines gears up now for its first cinematic adaptation. The film’s trailer provides a glimpse of the book’s vision of a post-apocalyptic world ravaged by Sixty Minute War which destroyed most of civilization and messed up the earth to boot. Traction cities and mobile monsters, by what was left of humanity, roams across the land in search of smaller cities to devour for resources. Within this world unfolds a story of revolution, justice, and revenge as Tom Natsworthy is sent to London’s bowels to help dismantle conquered settlements. Natsworthy eventually crosses paths with Hester Shaw who is hell-bent on killing the man she claims destroyed her life.

The trailer apparently shows the audiences of how visually unique Mortal Engines promises to be, with such heavy liftings on Reeve’s rich imagery and wonderful characters in his novels that’re finally coming to life. With a screenplay by The Lord of the Rings powerhouse trio Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Philippa Boyens, the film marks the feature debut of Christian Rivers who has worked alongside Jackson as a storyboard artist and visual effects supervisor ever since 1992’s Braindead. On River’s interview with Independent, he notes: “I personally just felt like audiences need something new and exciting and fresh. Mortal Engines is a new universe with new characters and it feels like the right time for that…One of the things that appealed to us is that it is such a unique world. I’ve never seen a city on wheels that is twice as large as the biggest cruise ship in the world. We are creating a visual world that you have never actually seen before.”

This visual is a design approach tied deeply into the world’s own rich, textured history as Rivers further explained: “In designing the future, we had to imagine most of our world has been destroyed and grab certain iconic things from our world that might have survived – then imagine what a future society would have extrapolated from those.” It has been a long journey though for the creative team after the film ended up on the back-burner after Jackson stepped in to direct The Hobbit trilogy but, in a way, Mortal Engines may have benefited from the passage of time, giving the film a chance to see visual effects technology continue to flourish, rendering London’s roaming

metropolis in ever-more realistic details. As much as they wanted to keep true to the spirit of Reeve’s words, Jackson notes a simple differentiation which comes with the biggest departure of the main characters who were purposefully aged up to make it appeal to a much older audience instead of making it a YA-oriented film. The film might also focus on a different protagonist; as while Tom is the hero of the book, it’s Hester who takes the center stage. And while the scar was described on the pages of the book as covering Hester’s eye, the scar in the film is lowered on her face, allowing her to offer more eye expressions through her character’s mask. And while many have been clamoring about Jackson breaking up The Hobbit, with Mortal Engines though, he’s returning to the format that was so successful with Lord of the Rings trilogy: one book per movie. Thus, the film will only cover the events of the first book of the series; no more, no less. Though Jackson went on to confirm that unlike both of his Lord of the Rings films, Mortal Engines will have to wait and see about a potential sequence - who knows? If the first flick connects with film fans when it arrives in theaters, this could just be the beginning of the Mortal Engines story on screen. So, how about that? After watching the trailer, the question surely remains: “If we were walking among the ruins and found remnants of our civilization, how will we fight against total extinction? How will we rise above the giant predator city on wheels?” Mortal Engines hits theaters this December 14. Don’t miss that out!

Lastly, who wouldn’t want to witness with their own eyes how the Gen 1 Transformers are portrayed on the silver screen? However, as we all are pretty much well aware of, this film is already the sixth film about Transformers (excluding the animated film) so some of the fans might feel fatigued about it. Transformers cannot light a candle to the popularity and awesomeness of Marvel Cinematic Universe so having too many installments may prove to be fatal to the film’s final box office earning. On the other hand, if you think of Bumblebee as a standalone film, one which you don’t have to marathon the previous installments just to understand what’s going on, then this film has a high chance of earning a blockbuster medal. Bumblebee has a fighting chance of

Moreover, considering that each of the Transformers gross more than $100 million worldwide, Bumblebee should be able to generate a handsome profit after its initial release. Other stars who are expected to appear in the Bumblebee film include John Cena, Kenneth Choi, Gracie Dzienny, Vanessa Ross, Jason Drucker, and a whole lot more! Feature Story

Emily Blunt

44

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

t has been 54 years since Robert Stevenson’s original Mary Poppins swept onto our screens with an umbrella on hand. Right during the time of the Great Depression in 1930s, the idea of having a darker backdrop in which hope could reappear from the skies gave birth to the marvelously magical nanny of all time. It is plain to say that we all had a share of nostalgia in many ways. From the characters to the singing and dancing, the film has sort of seared itself into our memory. Now, after decades away from the spotlight, the world’s favorite nanny is returning to the big screen to bring the classic musical that remains the spoonful of sugar that audiences crave. And when it comes to reviving perhaps the most beloved nanny in the entire history of literature and cinema, Disney is bringing Emily Blunt to take on the iconic role this time. Mary Poppins Returns is a sequel to an untouchable Disney live-action-animation classic made famous by Julie Andrews’ role as the enigmatic and magical nanny that earned her an Academy Award for Best Actress. Blunt acknowledges the high bar set by Andrews and is honest about the challenge

of taking the role. She also admits that the original left an indelible impact on her, yet she’s completely unfazed of the undertaking and is much grateful to take on perhaps her biggest acting task all in her stride. “There’s nobody who can outdo Julie Andrews,” she said during her interview in Time. “She’s like emblematic of our country in many ways! I just realize, I have to do something different, and it’ll just have to be my take.” When it comes to nabbing good roles, Emily Blunt has much under her belt. She’s played diverse roles and created indelible, interesting characters - played an action hero, poised in performing the divorced alcoholic in The Girl on the Train, and just recently hit her most critically acclaimed performance this year in A Quiet Place. In addition to her acting resume, she has also proven herself to be quite the singer when she made her mark on Disney’s Into the Woods. And as a year-ender, she’s up to deliver a magical performance in Disney’s Christmas family tentpole.

46

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

Blunt reveals she was absolutely terrified at the proposition of playing the titular nanny, but she proves otherwise that “in every job that must be done, there is an element of fun”. On her chat with Entertainment Weekly, Blunt beams about how Mary is “just such fun to play”. “I’m so different from this character, but I do know a lot of people like her, so it does feel familiar,” she explained. And while it’s certainly exciting to see the world’s favorite nanny descending from the sky to bring us magic and healing once more, Blunt warns that audiences should not expect her to be anything sweet like the first film. Instead of basing her part in the film on what Andrews did all those years ago, Blunt has been taking to the original books for inspiration. Speaking with Daily Mail, she stressed, “In the books, she’s quite batty! She’s eccentric and very vain and not warm and fuzzy at all. But she’s also

magical, with an incredible warm core and she has a master plan for the children and ultimately brings great joy to them.” While the trailer places us back to the 1930s London, with the same Cherry Tree Lane, Mary Poppins is altogether a new character in her return, with new assortment of colorful and whimsical characters, and new, original music to play. “All I could do was try to see Julie’s version as just sort of white noise and try to find my own version of Mary. And what a gift of a character she is!”

I’m so different from this character, but I do know a lot of people like her, so it does feel familiar.

As far as the musical aspect of the film goes, Blunt said that the cast and crew worked tirelessly to pull off the big Mary Poppins numbers. The team behind the music has catered the original compositions in the sequel to match Blunt’s own talents and cater her abilities as a singer. Unlike her previous work in the Disney realm, Emily Blunt is working with songs especially designed for her. The entirely original soundtrack has made her feel less of a pressure approaching it in this way than doing an adaptation of something that’s been done before, because it’s not comparative. The trailer shows Blunt singing one of the new songs – and it’s supercalifragilistic expialidocious! It must be a new classic to add to our playlist. “I must say it’s a joy to play somebody who knows so confidently that she is better than everybody else!”, says Blunt on Mary Poppins’ new character. And while Blunt made a prudent decision not to reach out to her predecessor, she was well aware of the legacy.

“However incredible the first film is, I hope this one will be allowed to stand on its own. It’s magical, but it’s so grounded as well. There’s such a beautiful story running through it.” This, in its way, only proves that Blunt is just like Mary Poppins: practically perfect in every way!

uperheroes influence and inspire us since our childhood. Ever since Superman made his first appearance in 1938, we came to embrace the idea of superhuman power. On top of that, we came to believe that we can do, achieve, and conquer greatness. Now, many decades since then, the affection and admiration we had as children only grew much deeper for these characters. Though enhanced by superpowers or abilities, superheroes as portrayed in today’s films display an astonishing level of humanity. They cope with human experiences which we can identify; we see a part of our own reality on the big screen through them; and what makes them inspirational are their flaws, virtues, and origin stories that are relatable. First appeared in comics, Aquaman made quite a leap in portraying its character in Batman v Superman and Justice League. However his name was known to many as well as the abilities and powers he possessed. This superhero earned a reputation that didn’t reached the admiration of most audience. This is something that everyone, even Aquaman actor Jason Momoa himself, is made aware of.

Storyline

Now, a first solo film for the Atlantean hero will bring us to a whole new world of fantasy and adventure, with a different twist and touch as we take a deep dive into his backstory before he became the superhero we’ve known him to be. And who else can do the film justice other than highly acclaimed director James Wan? A renowned filmmaker, James Wan first made a name in the horror genre by directing films such as Saw, Conjuring and Insidious, to name a few, which earned high success before making the unexpected leap to high-octane action with Furious 7. Now, behind the camera for Warner Bros.’ DC Comics adaptation of a mainstream hero Aquaman, Wan is shifting genre gears yet again. Helming on a comic book movie, Wan is off to show his range and bring a touch of his signature horror creations to bear on this highseas superhero adventure. During the journalists’ Edit Bay visit, James Wan revealed his vision for bringing the wonders of

52

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

Atlantis and one of the world’s goofier superheroes to the screen. From pre-prod to post production, the film is a challenge of details. One considerable factor to take on special account is the tone of the film. The only way to keep things interesting in superhero genre is diversity of tone. From the DC movies, we haven’t seen that much of diversity of tone just yet. It’s critical but Wan is willing to take the risk. Wan has previously stated that he wants the film to feel more like a fantasy adventure than a run-on-the-mill superhero movie. “I want it to feel more like a quest, fantasy movie,” Wan said on his interview with Total Film. “I wanted people to see just the visuals of the different worlds and what they are getting themselves into, like you are seeing it for the first time.” The scenes on the trailer is just as adventurous and challenging as the cast and crew’s journey into making this film a different take on characters,

effects, and story with extreme faithfulness to the comics. Known for doing some very cool camera moves and long shots in his previous films, Wan is bringing that flavor right in. In shooting Nicole Kidman’s big opening sequence, Wan used a Spidercam rig on the ceiling to capture the scene in one fluid, traveling shot.

I wanted people to see just the visuals of the different worlds and what they are getting themselves into, like you are seeing it for the first time.

Filming the underwater action sequence was one of the most challenging elements to crack, including the decision to shoot everything dry for wet and simulating the look of weightlessness for the characters’ movement. But the technical challenge is worth doing for Wan to give the audience the best experience of the scene. One coolest thing and subtly unique feature of this film is a fantastical world not in another dimension, not in outer space or in Middle Earth, but right here on Earth. The world of Atlantis is here on our planet, resting deep down into the earth’s floor, having their own technology and light source. “I want it to be magical. I want the different kingdoms that we go to visit, and Atlantis being the main one, to be like nothing you’ve ever seen before. To be very unique and magical…A modern Atlantis, at least, is all grown. Then that informs visually what they look like…”

“It’s always nice to let the detailed action moment play out in one shot and letting the audience sort of soak it all in, just examine all the little details, all the nuances in the moment. And just as important, basically time just showing the lay of the land literally, like the geography of the land, and giving the audience an understanding of where they are as the actions play out,” he told Collider.

On crafting characters, Wan knew he had to embrace the character’s goofiness to make the film work and Momoa’s personality is the perfect fit to pull it off. “Right off the start, I just wanted to bring a lot of his own personality into his character. I didn’t want to make a whole movie where he’s heavy and moody and stuff like that. That’s not the movie I wanted to make. I think, you know, I wanted to embrace what people think is goofy and potentially campy about his role, and really make it fun and adventurous, in a cool way,” he chatted Fandango. Sharing the same vision with Wan, Jason Momoa is also hoping a change with his portrayal of the character. But it doesn’t just end there. On the trailer, Arthur Curry shows a ripped, imposing, and shirtless body which makes him look different than he did in his most recent DCEU film, especially when it comes to his tattoos. But as

56

ISSUE 54 / paperclipsmagazine.com

the story transcends, we could notice a change of the character’s costume as well. “The key was to try and take that classic outfit and make sure it’s not goofy, make sure it’s not cheesy…The key was taking the idea and making sure that the aesthetic fits with the look of what Atlantis is today and what Atlantis was back then. And just trying to do it justice but do it in a way that potentially wink at the classic old costume but kind of bringing a sort of modern sensibility to it.” And while the costumes in the film look like they are ripped right from the pages of a comic book, each outfit is designed with a story in mind. It’s the way it is for a reason, and not just there to look cool. Of course, comes with characters and good effects is a good-ole story. ‘’For me anyway, what makes origin stories and origin superhero stories really fun is just watching

the training sequences, watching how they become who they are, and that is a sequence in the movie where Arthur’s mentor, trains him as a boy how to potentially use the trident.” For Wan, the love stories in the film are just as important, if not more, than the action. It has that romantic, nautical motif between Tom Curry and Queen Atlanna which is a very important emotional backbone that basically drives Arthur’s entire emotional arc through the film. But for many who are excited for the love story of Arthur and Mera, theirs will be influenced by Romancing the Stone. Great characters, real jeopardy and great elements of comedy between the duo is what Wan expects us to see.

to look very different. It will feel very different – aesthetically, tonally, story-wise. It will be a product of his own take. The film will cover ground (and sea) its predecessors didn’t have time to in either Batman v Superman Justice League. Amid a deluge of Christmas season competition, let’s see how the emphasis of Aquaman as an action drama and an IMAX-worthy spectacle will stay afloat at least on equal footing or on top of Christmas tentpole pile.

Aquaman is definitely not a horror movie but the wonders of Atlantis will be infused with Wan’s signature monster creatures. “And so of course we’re going to see creatures in there that are scary. And that’s what I love about this movie. It really allows me to lean into how most people feel about the ocean, which is, it’s amazing, it’s wondrous and magical on the one hand, but on the other hand it’s scary and frightening.” Speaking to Total Film about Aquaman being influenced by his horror career, he said: ‘’I want to take what people think is from me, what is special about the world and bring it into this movie, and yet infiltrate through my own sensibility. I just become somewhat synonymous with it, so that people had a harder time seeing me for anything else outside of horror. I just wanted to prove that I’m not just a horror filmmaker; I’m a filmmaker, period.’’ Since the project is so different from anything he’s done before, Wan made sure, while talking to Entertainment Weekly, that this film is going

spending time and growing up with us. Today Ebony Rose and I have a little silver on our face and in our coats? We do not mind a little silver because mum said fur baby coats changing to silver show our friends that we are very wise. Ebony Rose, Pippa and I have written nursery rhymes about ourselves so our readers can have fun learning them. We love to interact with our readers asking questions at the end of each chapter. Mum said interacting helps children think for themselves so that they can ask questions about the animals around them. For example, where do pets come from and who looks after them, what kind of animal are they, big, small, friendly, active, love cuddles? Pugs like us are cuddly and sleep a lot.
