Geocaching in Mississippi Newsletter Volume 1, Issue 1

September 2014

First Newsletter Publication I have been geocaching since 2005 and have only seen one other organization to promote their organization with a newsletter. I feel the need to share with you that the MSGA.net / MSGEOCACHERS.ORG website is and always will be available to our members. I would like to see more of you using the website to post events, how to’s, creative cache containers, etc. Over the past few years we have all experienced many difficulties in dealing with the website, and I thank you for hanging in there and being a Mississippi Geocaching Association member. If you are not a member, please go sign up for free and join in on the discussions already in the forum, feel free to post new topics of conversation.

the upcoming months to talk to friends who are geocachers and ask them to once again log onto the forums and start posting. The website is a family friendly place and children are welcome.

If you have any questions please talk to your District Board Rep who can help to address your concerns.

This newsletter will share with you upcoming news, events, outstanding caches, tech talk, recipes, milestone, comics, kid section, as well as photos relating to geocaching.

I hope you enjoy! Until we meet on the trail, cache on.

Help us to promote MSGA and get the members numbers back into the hundred, VS the 2 digits. I challenge you in

August 7 Souvenir Geocaching Challenge How many of you were successful in logging all 6 caches and receiving the coveted 7th Souvenir? Were you the type that went out within the first week to obtain them all? Because of family or work, did you have to wait till the last minute? How about spacing them out, throughout the month so that you obtained a

cache souvenir every few days? I personally love these types of challenges created by Geocaching.com. You are able to have something on your profile to show that you are a well rounded geocacher, and you have given back by going out and caching. So what types of challenges would you like to see Groundspeak come up with in the

future? Maybe a souvenir for each season, or holiday, caching with pets?

Updating your Geocaching profile www.mygeocachingprofile.com/ Ok cachers it is time to update those profiles. Add those new FTF’s, Jazz up your current information. You can go to Mygeocachingprofile to get statistics on your cache finds to add to your profile page. Add a new avatar, List out your most favorite caches. Did you know that you can list what type of GPS device you use? You can also request other cachers to be your friends. You can log benchmarks and see those statistics. Keep track of all your souveiners in one place.

Tech Talk –Field Trip App Fieldtrippers.com Field Trip App Free—Iphone and Android

"Take only pictures; leave only footprints."

I have just learned about this new app called Field Trip. You download to your phone and leave running in the back ground. As you come to something interesting the application will notify you about the place. From the video on the website. It looks like it would

be very interesting paired with virtual geocaching. You get to site and have to read a monument, it would be cool to have that monument and photos to automatically be accessed from your phone for you, without searching. I downloaded the app and took it around Oxford & Tupelo and did not have anything to happen. I would say this app is a bust until more cities are uploaded to site.

Geocache Description:

Cache is at coordinates. You will need to find one cache spelling out the letters of MISSISSIPPI.

Page 2

That’s is only eleven caches, sounds easy HUH.

You will have to create a bookmark listing along with the Challenge cache to post to your log.

Says you can only use a cache once. Can not start with a symbol, space or #. All the caches found has to have been placed and found in MS.

This sounds like another sweet challenge cache in Mississippi for everyone to check out. Can’t wait to see the logs. Good Luck.

MS State Parks Geocaching Challenge I am interested in putting together a series of caches in each of the Mississippi State Parks to help promote tourism within our state. I know that we have several caches in each state park currently, but with this challenge I would like to have a specific cache at each check in office that would be pertinent to this series. I am asking for volunteers to help with this project.

If there is interest amongst our members to help place and maintain these caches, I will head up the North Ms area in getting the ok from Park Managers. I would like to work with the MWDFP to get a coin published for this challenge as well as the challenge listed on the departments website. I know of other states that have this challenge and

feel it would be beneficial for our state to also have something the same if not similar. Mississippi Geocachers do not want to be left behind, we want to move forward and increase our tourism, and by doing so, we should want to create new and interesting challenges such as this to bring cachers from out of state to our state parks.

August Eat & Greet– The Socializer GC5A7EX The job I work for America’s Car-Mart was having its 33 anniversary so to celebrate I asked Sniperchicken to host an eat and greet for the local Oxford Geocachers to come out and fellowship as well as receive the August souvenir. 23 geocachers attended. Car-Mart had a group of Live Action Role Players fighting next to us,

Boca Motorcycle club came to promote child abuse awareness. Advance Auto donated hot dogs and hamburgers. Lacey hid an unpublished cache called Orange you glad you came, that was fun for some of the newbie's that dropped by to find. Overall the day was hot but a successful get together meeting old and new friends. Page 3

The 100 markers are placed in significance to the blues music heritage. Each marker tells about a piece of history that happened at the location.

At or near these markers there is a geocache hidden.

There is a geocoin for completion of cache challenge to geocachers and nongeoocachers.

The final is located at: Greenwood, MS

Geocaching Horror for Halloween edition Next months edition will be Haunted, muah ha ha. I would like for you to email me your horror stories. Spooky caches you have found in MS and recommend for other cachers to find. Do you know of a haunted place we should check out, let me know and I will pass the information along. Know of any events that are happening in October? I would also like to invite our members to go out and hide a couple new caches in the month of October. With

cold weather approaching and ticks dying off, you know we will be back out on the trail looking for some fresh and interesting caches to find. Make them interesting and people will come to find them. I have given you a challenge, do you dare take it?

Signature Item– What’s yours? What is your signature item that you leave behind in a cache?

There are a ton of cachers out there like myself who collect your signature items.

I use to make recycled fairy dolls with littlebit when she was younger from thrown away silk flowers found in cemeteries. I have collected bullet shells turned into santa clause, poker chips with cache handles, geocoins, business cards, guitar pics, beaded bracelets, etc.. Maybe it is time to start looking at some new signature items to freshen up your image. Maybe a wooden key, game piece earrings, something reflecting your cache handle. Keep it interesting, cheap and fun.
