Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects

1 Extremely rare, antique Saint Louis 1848 pansy sulphide and carpet ground paperweight. A carpet ground, with six spokes of blue and white canes separating alternating panels of green and pink canes, is interrupted by a central ring of cogs that halos a rare molded sulphide pansy. The silvershining pansy rests above a translucent red angular cushion that descends deep into the design to reveal a white stave basket formed by the central ring’s cane stems. The sulphide includes a thin banner below the blossom that reads “A MOI”, explained in Paul Jokelson, “The Great Sulphide Show”, page 21, figure 50, as the French coded message “think of me”. 2 Excellent antique Clichy cinquefoil millefiori garland on turquoise paperweight. A striking cinquefoil garland of iconic pink and green rose canes, alternating with purple cogs that have red, green and white complex centers, encircles a large central pink cog, with a complex green center, and a ring of red bull’s-eye centered stardust canes. Five simple white pastry molds, with red and yellow flower cores, fill the void between the exterior of each loop. Air pearl accents and opaque turquoise ground. 3 3 Antique Bacchus close concentric millefiori and purple basket paperweight. Pastel-colored concentric rings of assorted large cogs, including ogee-tipped ones, cradle in a purple stave basket, dotted with air pearls at the perimeter, to form a rare and stunning design. Rough pontil. Featured and discussed in the 2002 PCA Bulletin article by Bob Hall, Of Bacchus, Terry, and Bob. Diameter 3 5/16" $3,750—4,750

5 Antique Baccarat tri-colored bouquet faceted paperweight. A bouquet, in the colors of the French revolution, has a red-onwhite primrose, with a stardust and bull’s-eye center, on the left and has a white double clematis, with honeycomb center, on the right, which bloom below a cloud of five five-petalled blue forgetme-nots, with stardust and bull’s-eye centers, atop intertwined stems and their green leaves. The bouquet traditionally appears in the literature with the clematis and primrose in reverse position. Clear star-cut ground. Six and one facets. 6 Extremely rare, possibly unique, antique Baccarat twoflower bouquet and millefiori garland paperweight. A small blue forget-me-not blossom, with white notched edges to the petals and a white complex cog center, extends away from an incredible Type I pansy. The pansy has two notched dark purple upper petals, with fascinating white crowsfoot decorations, and three extremely dark green lower arrowhead petals, with white notched edges, around a central white stardust cane, with a central blue bull’s-eye. The pansy is crowned by four spaced green leaves and grows from a stem that supports the other bloom and four more green leaves. The bouquet is encircled by a millefiori border garland of alternating arrowhead canes, with cross cane centers, and stardust/bull’s-eye canes, in the image of the pansy stamen. 9 Antique Baccarat “Bouquet de marriage” close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A stunning complex cane, composed of a red six-pointed star cane encircled by red and white arrow rods, each rimmed in blue, and with an outer ring of red-dotted white stars, is at the apex of a wedding bouquet-inspired carpet ground mushroom. The mushroom has a ring of white stardust canes, with green bull’s-eye centers, then three more concentric rings of white floret cane bundles, each with a green bull’s-eye center, and tapers downward into a white stem. It is encircled by a cobalt blue spiral-encased white latticinio torsade, over clear star-cut ground. Pictured on page 53 of Baccarat Paperweights, Two Centuries of Beauty. 11 Extremely rare antique Clichy green chequer paperweight. A network of beautiful cadmium green latticinio canes is arranged in a traditional chequer pattern, its voids filled with colorful and varied complex canes. The green latticinio is supported by a layer of white latticinio which, in turn, tops a design of white swirling latticinio that originates at the center of the underside and comes to rest at the weight’s lower periphery. 10 Antique Bacchus patterned millefiori paperweight. Five spaced circlets of varied complex canes enclose a sixth circlet within their central void. The canes are in red, blue, yellow and green, all used in tandem with white, and include ruffles, sawmills, pastry mold canes and tubes, all set within an opaque white, sodden snow ground. Cobalt blue and white configurations ring the weight’s periphery, spaced in alternation with the circlets, and a cobalt blue and white stave basket cups the design. From the C. 12 Rare and unique antique Clichy pink clematis on latticinio paperweight. A stunning pink clematis blossom, with seven variegated petals, has an intricate center composed of an outer ring of twelve mint green stamens that borders three concentric ridged rings in purple-over-white, which encircle a central complex red and white cog. The bloom grows from a long curvy stem, with four leaves, where a delicate pink bud, with tendrils, emerges from its own stem, over a double-swirl white latticinio cushion. “Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike.” —The Art of the PaperweightChallenging Tradition. A blue and white buttercup, with a center of white star canes, is flanked by two Type I pansies and crested by a white double clematis with a star honeycomb core. 14 Rare antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori with buttercup flower picture cane paperweight. A wonderful example of a 28-point cog buttercup picture cane, its stamen star center in green encircled by seven petals of unusual cross-like canes in white and red, sits at the center of six concentric rings of millefiori canes and provides its petal canes and stamen cane as material for the rings, which are further accompanied by bull’s-eyes, tubes, cogs, six-pointed stars and crosses. 15 Antique Clichy dotted pansy and bud paperweight. A single pansy is represented by two purple upper petals, velvety with dew droplets, and three golden yellow lower petals, each tipped with purple, decorated with lines that radiate from the stamen and dotted with purple accents, and has a curly-cue green stamen at the center. It grows atop a green stem that emerges from a profusion of green leaves, accompanied by a trademark drooping purple bud, over clear grid-cut ground. From the C. Frank Kireker Collection. 17 Exceptional antique Baccarat spaced concentric millefiori ruby-flash overlay faceted paperweight. Arrow rods, arranged in a ring, point toward a central cross cane that occupies the center of a dome of spaced concentric rings of cogs, six-pointed stars and bull’s-eyes, florets and star canes in white, red, cobalt blue and green, over clear star-cut ground. Ruby-flash overlay with six and one facets, and twelve vertical finger facets at the base. A central arrangement of four concentric rings of complex canes, in pink, white, blue and green, is bordered by six C-shaped millefiori garlands, each different from the next, in pink, blue and green, over translucent cranberry ground. “A unique version of the circular garland motif is found in Clichy “C-scroll” paperweights. 18 Rare antique Baccarat 1848 “choufleur” green carpet ground paperweight. Slightly spaced complex canes, each with a central red six-pointed star cane encircled by a ring of six, or occasionally seven, green six-pointed stars, create a cauliflowerlike ground where spaced concentric complex canes and Gridel Silhouette canes rest. These include arrowheads, bull’s-eyes, crosses, quatrefoil and shamrocks that alternate with a rooster, dog, pheasant, horse, squirrel, dove, deer and two butterfly silhouette canes. A black-rimmed, deep amethyst latticinio butterfly is framed on either side by rainbow-colored millefiori fore and hind wings, and garlanded by a ring of alternating red and white cog canes, over clear star-cut ground. “These insects dazzle the viewer, the delicate archetypes of a vibrant imagination. 20 Antique Saint Louis spaced silhouette canes on pink carpet ground paperweight. A central blue, white and pink complex cane is encircled by a ring of hollow green and white crimped tubes, further encircled by five spaced silhouette canes, each encircled by a similar ring of green and white crimped tubes. The silhouettes include a dancing man, a thin running devil, a dog and two camel canes. These motifs all rest within a dense carpet of hollow pink and white crimped tubes, over clear ground. “Well done carpet grounds are among the loveliest weights.” —Paperweights of The New York Historical Society. A generous array of Gridel silhouette canes, including a deer, a dancing devil, a goat, a pheasant, a dog, an elephant, a rooster, a horse and a clown, is scattered through with flower canes, star canes and complex canes, all of them brilliantly and variously colored atop an elaborate cushion of white upset muslin here and there threaded with rainbow hues and punctuated with a date cane. An unusually large pelargonium, with a cluster of six yellow rods encircled by five notched pink petals, each accented with a pair of black lines, centers a bouquet, surrounded by assorted lampwork and millefiori flowers, including four small clematis blossoms, two tulips and buds, in shades of orange, blue, red, pink and white, several slender green leaves and gathered stems, over clear star-cut ground. 26 Antique Venetian enamel scent bottle, by Giacomo Franchini. Swirling enamel in greens, blues, yellows, pinks, reds and more is enlivened with glittering gold aventurine and populated with a colorful array of portrait canes representing personages of the time. An elaborate brass fitting at the top of the bottle receives a carved brass stopper, and a brass chain with ring is attached at either side. 42 Antique Clichy trefoil millefiori garland on green ground paperweight. Seven complex canes are spaced on an opaque green ground and are surrounded by a trefoil garland of white and red star canes that alternate with blue, white and red canes. The spaced canes are comprised of three different designs. Pictured on page 7 of the 1970 PCA Bulletin. From the C. Frank Kireker Collection. Radiating counter-clockwise from a sky blue and white center pastry mold cane, latticinio ribbons in an alternating pattern of cerulean blue and white come to rest at the outer edges of the weight, creating a vortex effect. A rosecolored clematis, its two tiers of six rounded petals each radiating from a green-rimmed pink nexus, sits atop a short stem flanked by two leaves. Another two leaves flank the bloom and three more fan up from its crest accompanied by a pink bud. Clear oval on beveled opaline block. “The single flowers, pink against a white plaque ... are rare.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. A stardust cane pulls upward towards an air pearl to anchor six concentric rings of various alternating complex canes, most with stars, predominantly in white, blue and red, with accents of green. Completely green uncommon stave basket. Annealing crack to full perimeter of basket and along one stave; surface wear to dome. A large and nearly translucent pink and green rose cane is surrounded by two spaced concentric rings of assorted complex canes in shades of blue, pink, purple, red, yellow and white, on a ground of far spread edelweiss-centered translucent green moss canes. A completely white rose cane rests near the border of the design. Top facet and side honeycomb faceting. Bidding Bids may be placed by mail, telephone, fax, e-mail or on the web at www.selman.com/auction. Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Bidding will continue until all under bidders tell us they no longer wish to bid. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be considered the high bid. Payment Successful bidders will be invoiced for the total amount due at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders pay a 20% commission on the hammer price of each item, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Payment is due on receipt of invoice; after 15 days a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged. We accept all forms of payment, including electronic bank transfers. No additional surcharge will be applied for using credit cards. All checks must be drawn on U. S. banks. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until the full price has been paid. Shipping Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $15 for the first paperweight, and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. Signature is required for delivery. For shipments outside the United States the cost will be $35 plus an additional $5 for each additional weight. Price of shipping/ insurance for oversized items will vary according to size and weight. Alternate shipping methods may be available, if desired. Returns Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L. H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt.
