Extremely rare antique Pantin red rose and bud paperweight. A serene white rose has several layers of overlapping petals, carefully sheathing a yellow center and haloed by bright green sepals that peer shyly from behind the bloom. A companion bud sprouts next to the rose, still cradled by a cage of green sepals, amidst a crown of three leaves in varied shades of green. Gathered stems support the delightful bloom, flanked by two more leaves. Opaque red ground. “Wherever they were made they are Victorian workmanship at its best.” —Paul Hollister, Glass Paperweights of the New-York Historical Society. Very rare antique Silesian/Bohemian Josephinenhutte 1848 “J Weight” scattered millefiori and silhouettes paperweight. Boldly-colored complex millefiori, some whole and some partial, include a wonderful selection of silhouettes from the glass house, including of running rabbits, horses, bees, an eagle and perhaps a few monkeys, and are joined by a wonderful signature/date cane, the iconic mark of the “J Weight”. The delightful selection of millefiori is spaced on a cambered cushion of white upset muslin with bits of colorful filigree. Diameter 3 3/16" $12,000—16,000 2

Rare antique Baccarat 1848 spaced millefiori Gridel silhouettes on red and white star carpet ground paperweight. A coral, white and green complex star arrowhead cane adorns the center spaced complex canes in blue, yellow, violet, red and green, in a sea of white cogs with red and violet stars. The canes include the Gridel silhouette canes of two butterflies, a dog, a deer, a horse, a black monkey, a white rooster, a black rooster, a pheasant, a swan and an elephant. Blue and white lace is visible from the underside. Signature/date cane. The term “carpet” was first used to describe these weights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Métiers (Paris, 1855). “Carpet grounds, usually associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.” —Paperweights: Flowers which clothe the meadows. Very rare antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on aquamarine honeycomb carpet ground paperweight. A prominent “B 1848" signature/date cane, surrounded by an assortment of spaced complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouettes of a horse, dog, deer, goat, elephant, butterfly and two roosters, one black and one white, dots an unusual carpet ground of bundled aqua honeycomb canes, each with a red, white and green cog cane center. Rare antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on stardust carpet ground paperweight. A coral-rimmed arrowhead cane is surrounded by an assortment of spaced concentric complex millefiori in brilliant shades of red, coral, yellow, purple, green and blue. Spaced amongst the millefiori is the picture cane of a red flower, as well as the Gridel silhouettes of a butterfly, a deer, a dog, a horse, two roosters, a monkey, a swan and an elephant. A ring of twenty iconic pink and green rose canes is the highlight of six concentric rings of pink, purple, white and green canes, including pastry molds, cogs and six beautiful white roses, which culminate into a single green moss cane with a tiny white floret center. Outstanding antique Clichy close packed millefiori and roses mushroom faceted paperweight. A multitude of assorted complex canes, including three iconic pink and green roses, three uncommon pink and white roses, a very rare purple and white rose, moss canes, pastry molds and cog canes, creates a mushroom tuft that rests on a basket of white staves which is pulled down into a tapered stem. Doily-cut clear ground. Five and one facets. “These weights, while sometimes referred to individually as baskets, bouquets, or nosegays, have, for reasons that are visually obvious, come to be known-somewhat less poetically-as mushrooms.” —Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute of Chicago. Very rare antique Baccarat cabbage rose paperweight. A cabbage rose, much less frequent than its rounded “thousand petaled” cousin, has embellished ruffled petals and outer petals that caress the design intimately. The rose sits atop a slender curving stem, flanked by two trios of dark green leaves. Another trio of leaves and then a spaced pair halo the bloom. Star-cut clear ground. “Two types of roses were made by Baccarat. The first is a thousand petaled rose with flat, round outside petals, representing 91% of their roses. Three single-tiered white clematis blooms, each with six ribbed petals and a stardust core punctuated with a green bull’s-eye, grow from a forking stem, flanked by a pair of striped bladed leaves and one tiny leaf and shared by a companion bud and six crenulated leaves. A central red pompon flower is the nexus from which two pairs of rare Type II primroses move outward on sinuous leafy stems, creating a formal bouquet in the shape of a cruciform. Each bloom is accompanied by a shy bud, its color just peeking through the sepals. Star-cut clear ground. Six and one facets. A lush dark red “thousand petaled” rose and a green-sheathed red bud grow alongside a white double clematis, with a star honeycomb center, and a Type II purple, magenta and yellow pansy, also with a star honeycomb center. The resulting bouquet is gathered on stems with green leaves. Star-cut clear ground. Six and one facets. “In contrast to the work of the other French factories, Baccarat produced conspicuously formal floral arrangements. A red, white and blue complex cane centers three concentric rings of star-centered canes, one of blue star-centered red bull’s-eye canes, another of blue arrowhead canes and the outer one of white and red star cogs, to create the center of a flower-shaped design, with each of six radiating petals garlanded by white cogs with seven central blue stars, of alternating red or blue complex canes like the ones from the center of the flower. The design is set into a sea of aqua honeycomb canes that flow to the base. A filigree cushion peers through the base. Paul Hollister compared the detailed grounds of these weights to needlepoint in The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights. Diameter 2 15/16" $5,000—6,000

A purple and yellow Type III pansy, with a stardust and bull’s-eye cane center, a red double clematis, with a stardust and bull’s-eye cane center, and a stem of three white forget-me-nots, with red dot centers, grow on gathered stems with a yellow and purple bud and crenulated green leaves. In the parlance of Victorian flower language, the forget-me-nots symbolizes remembrance, the pansy speaks of friendship, while the clematis wishes for luck. Star-cut clear ground. Eleven surprising and rare Clichy-type rose canes are spaced in a ring with hollow purple cogs, around a ring of white edelweiss flower canes, a ring of alternating blue and red complex canes and a larger white complex cane. A ring of green cog canes surrounds the roses and is held in a stave basket of hollow white staves, pulled downward into a tapered stem. Blue-encased white latticinio torsade with mercury rings above and below. Star-cut clear ground. Five and one facets. Good condition. Diameter 2 15/16" $4,000—6,000

with coral torsade paperweight. A large central red, white and blue star complex cane is ringed by hollow red cog canes and then by a circle of apple green floret tube canes. A ring of white stardust ensues and then another of blue and white complex canes. The outer ring of green cog canes is pulled down into a tapered stave stem. A ring of seventeen gorgeous pink and green rose canes encircles a ring of detailed edelweiss flower canes, a ring of hollow red cogs and a central complex cog cane. Two pink and green rose canes, two red-centered white rose canes and a white rose with a yellow center are surrounded by dozens of colorful assorted complex canes, including stars, florets, quatrefoils, arrowheads, crimps, cogs and bull’s-eyes. The design is encircled by a ring of blue, green and white floret bull’s-eye canes. The arrangement rests in a basket of alternating turquoise and white staves. “The French factories included their most spectacular millefiori canes in close packed weights.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. A beautiful trademark pink and green rose rests at the center of two concentric rings of diverse millefiori bundles, pastry molds, ruffles and cogs, including two uncommon pink and white roses. Cables of cobalt blue and white latticinio, over parallel strips of white latticinio, divide the millefiori rings. This design departs from the traditional white chequer pattern with colorful twists encased in white filament for a bolder and richer effect. A ring of hollow white cog canes encircles a blue fortress and white rode complex cane at the apex of a tightly-knit cambered cushion of hollow pink cogs. The silhouettes of a dancing devil, dancing lady, a pair of dancing ladies, a dog and a camel, all set in white or blue cogs, are each ringed by hollow white cogs and spaced in the carpet. “... they are one of the richest weights visually, and extremely desirable to have in a collection.” —The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights. Six ribbed white petals each cup a smaller smooth red petal and radiate around a central white star and red bull’s-eye cane to form a rare variation of the clematis flower. It is crowned by four spaced crenulated green leaves and blooms atop a short stem with a pair of opposing green leaves. Another leaf waves from the right of the bloom. Condition

Initial bidding begins Monday, March 4, 2024 at 9:00 am cst. All initial bids must be in hand on Monday, March 18, 2024 by 5:00 pm cst. Bids may be placed on the web at www.selman.com, by telephone at 800-538-0766 or 312-583-1177 or by email at info@paperweight.com. If you use the website to participate in this auction, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your username and password and for restricting access to your computer, and you agree to accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account. After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily via phone, fax, email or web to check on the status of their bids. It is your responsibility to stay in daily contact with us so that the auction can proceed in an expeditious manner. If you fail to contact us or if we are unable to reach you, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. If you are the last under bidder on a lot, L.H. Selman Ltd. in some cases will notify you of a 72-hour deadline to raise your bid above the high bidder’s bid. If you fail to act or respond, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay, in U.S. dollars, the full amount of the hammer price, the Buyer’s Premium calculated on the hammer price, all shipping fees and all applicable taxes. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days. Split payments and payment plans are not accepted without prior approval, at the sole discretion L.H. Selman Ltd. The full Buyer’s Premium of 23% will be applied to Visa, Mastercard and Discover credit card and debit card payments.
