1 Extremely rare antique Baccarat “Ducks-on-a-Pond” hollow faceted paperweight. A waddling of three small ducks, one headed in the opposite direction of the other two, floats at the center of a hollow-blown dome. Each duck is beige with yellow, red and green feather stripes and has a red bill and eyes. The avian friends swim over clear water inside a narrow ring of green and white jasper, depicting a grassy bank surrounding the pond, inside a star-cut clear footed base. Six side facets and a top facet serve as portals to view the intimate undisturbed scene within. For similar examples, see Sotheby’s, July 1, 1968, auction catalog, page 41, lot 277, and Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 117. Fine condition.

2 Rare antique Silesian/Bohemian Josephinenhutte 1848 scattered millefiori and silhouettes paperweight. Boldly-colored complex millefiori, some whole and some partial, include the silhouettes of two pairs of dancing devils and two monkeys, as well as a rare date cane. The delightful selection of millefiori is spaced on a cambered cushion of white upset muslin with bits of colorful filigree. Star-cut ground.

3 Antique Clichy pink, white and blue flower bouquet with ribbon paperweight. A double-tiered pink clematis appears to the right of a dense bouquet while a white counterpart appears to the left, below a trio of small blue flowers. Each bloom is centered by a complex cane and accompanied by a companion bud, still tightly-sheathed in thin sepals. The bouquet is gathered on stems, filled with crenulated green leaves and tied with a pink ribbon. Clear ground. Good condition.

4 Rare antique Baccarat 1848 spaced concentric millefiori and Gridel silhouette magnum paperweight. Four concentric rings of millefiori include silhouette canes of a deer, horse, dog, monkey, elephant, rooster, goat, moth, pelican and pheasant, picture canes of a flower and of shamrocks and colorful complex millefiori with trefoils, arrows, six-point stars and cogs, spaced on a dense cushion of white upset muslin with bits of colorful filigree and ribbons. Signature/date cane.

5 Excellent antique Clichy close packed millefiori, roses and signature cane paperweight. A field of tightly-packed millefiori in rich colors includes bull’s-eyes, stardust and cogs, along with a “C” signature cane at the perimeter. Numerous very rare blue, purple, green and yellow rose canes are scattered about in the prairie, as well as several iconic pink and green roses and uncommon white and pink roses. A basket of alternating blue and white staves holds the design. Clear ground.

6 Exquisite antique Clichy light blue and white swirl with large rose cane miniature paperweight. A beautiful and large light pink and green rose cane rests at the center of alternating turquoise blue and white curved radial staves that create a mesmerizing vortex. “Under the magnification of the dome, whirling millefiori pinwheels create a scintillating visual illusion, forming a dramatic ground for the millefiori cane. This piece holds one spellbound, a twisting whirlpool with a rose at its center.” The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition, page 28.

7 Very rare antique Baccarat “thousand petal” rose and forget-me-not two-flower bouquet with millefiori garland faceted paperweight. A deep red “thousand petal” rose sits atop a short pert stem flanked by a single leaf on one side and a twoleafed sprig with a red forget-me-not flower and an additional leaf on the other. Six spaced leaves and a companion red bud crown the bloom. A millefiori garland of alternating green and white crimp canes and red bull’s-eye and white stardust canes borders the design. Star-cut clear ground. All-over geometric faceting and top octagonal facet. A similar example is pictured and discussed in Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 100, fig. 324. “...roses used this way are rare and this is a very special weight.”

8 Excellent antique Clichy cinquefoil millefiori garland and central rose faceted paperweight. A large iconic pink and green rose cane dots the center of five intertwined garlands shaped like large question marks, each made of a chain of pastry mold in different colors and dotted by a large contrasting complex cane. White upset muslin over parallel latticinio rods on the underside. A carefully positioned round facet appears over each lobe, spaced by long vertical windows, below a top facet. Excellent condition.

9 Very rare antique Baccarat tricolor primrose paperweight. A large flower has a surprising blue and white whorl and white stardust cane center, surrounded by six white-rimmed cobalt blue petals, each with a patch of violet near the core. Seven green leaves protrude from behind the primrose, as it blooms on a short green stem with six additional green leaves. Clear ground. A similar example is pictured and discussed in Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 93, fig. 301. Excellent condition.

10 Rare antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori, dog silhouette and signature cane paperweight. A purple and white cog cane contains the silhouette of a dog, surrounded by five close concentric rings of sawmill cog canes and complex canes, in pink, white, green and blue. A signature cane resides near the canine friend, while the whole design sits in a green and white-striped stave basket. Good condition.

11 Very rare antique Baccarat “Légion d’honneur” enameled gold-foil medal and millefiori garland faceted paperweight. A replica of the obverse of the French Legion of Honor medal has a white Maltese asterisk above a wreath of green laurel leaves on the left and oak leaves on the right. A blue seal inscribed with “Bonaparte I consul 1802” surrounding a radiant profile of Napoleon I, centers the wreath, all in colored enamel over gold-foil. The medal hangs from a silver-foil chain, from a red enameled ribbon. A border garland of alternating white stardust canes and red arrowhead canes surrounds the medal. Star-cut clear ground. All-over geometric faceting and one top facet. Established by Napoleon Bonaparte, for military and civil service, the Legion is France’s premier order. “Enameled gold and silver foil incrustations are normally found in paperweight related objects...They are very rare in paperweights.”

12 Very rare antique Baccarat clematis with bud paperweight. Six ridged red petals are superimposed atop six larger ridged white petals and share a nexus of white star canes with a red and white bull’s-eye core. The bloom sits atop a stem from which fork two additional stems, one with three leaves and the other with four leaves and a sepal-enclosed red bud. Eight leaves crown the flower. Clear ground. See Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 80, figure 255.

13 Rare antique Clichy scattered millefiori and pseudo roses on sodden snow ground paperweight. Partial and whole complex canes, in vivid shades of pink, blue, green, yellow, red and white, including two pink pseudo-rose canes and two pseudo-rose bundle canes, are strewn onto an opaque white ground like a handful of fallen candies.

14 Antique French, possibly Pantin or Clichy, millefiori and rose chequer faceted paperweight. Scattered millefiori and flattened-tube roses in pink and white, are spaced by short white latticinio canes in a cushion with a red, white and blue cog and star complex cane at the apex. Parallel staves of white latticinio are visible from the underside. Clear ground. Four tiers of eight side facets and one top facet. Excellent condition.

15 Unusual antique Baccarat two-flower bouquet and millefiori garland faceted paperweight. A white clematis blooms alongside a dark purple, blue and white Type I pansy, which is bordered by five spaced green leaves, atop attached stems, along with a pair of shaded green leaves. A garland of white and red cogs and white and blue cogs surrounds the design. Clear ground. Five and one facets.

A quatrefoil garland of green moss canes interlaces with a quatrefoil garland of thirty-one iconic pink and green rose canes, around a close concentric design of pink and purple pastry molds and a central green pastry mold cane. White upset muslin ground over parallel latticinio staves. Excellent condition.

18 Very rare antique Baccarat buttercup and millefiori garland miniature paperweight. An amalgamated buttercup and primrose flower has five cupped yellow petals topped by a second tier of smooth red petals around a central red bull’s-eye-centered white stardust cane, adorned by a halo of four leaves and a leafy stem, flanked by two more leaves, inside a garland of alternating red-cored white crimp canes and complex six-point star canes. 19 Rare antique Saint-Mandé close concentric millefiori and roses miniature paperweight. A cobalt blue, pink and white complex cane is ringed by seven Clichy-type pink and white rose canes, then by a ring of mint-green complex canes and an outer ring of blue and pink complex canes. Clear ground.

20 Rare antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori and pseudo roses mushroom faceted paperweight. A central arrowhead cane is ringed by five concentric rings of assorted complex canes, including one of fifteen rare salmon-colored roses, creating a cambered mushroom cap. The outermost ring is pulled downward into a white stem for the mushroom and is surrounded by a cobalt blue and white torsade and a partial mercury ring. Star-cut clear ground. Six and one facets. Excellent condition.

21 Antique English, attributed to Bacchus, close packed millefiori paperweight. Ruffle, crimp, cog, star and triangle canes, in red, blue and white, are gathered and drawn to a tightly-packed and continuous carpet, drawn down into a stave basket.

22 Antique Clichy close concentric millefiori mushroom overlay faceted paperweight. A ring of alternating green and pink canes encircles a ring of white stardust and red bull’s-eye canes and a central blue complex cane. It is in turn surrounded by a ring of purple cog canes and a ring of alternating pink and white canes. An outer ring of green canes supports the design over a blue and white stave basket, pulled downward to create a stem. Grid-cut clear ground. Cobalt blue-over-white double overlay, with five and one facets. Good condition.

26 Antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on blue carpet ground paperweight. A central salmon-pink, blue, green and white star arrowhead cane is surrounded by an assortment of complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouette canes of a dog, a deer, a butterfly, a goat and a squirrel, which are scattered on a lush carpet of cobalt blue and white six-point star canes. Signature/date cane.

28 Rare antique Baccarat upright flower and millefiori bouquet faceted paperweight. A rare blue and white arrow cane Type II primrose centers an upright bouquet built upon four tiers of green leaves that are drawn down into a gathered and tapering stem. Framing the primrose are four flowers, two white and two blue, each centered by a complex cane. A spiraling blue and white torsade encircles the base. Star-cut clear ground. Three tiers of side facets in graduating size and one top facet. “[Upright bouquets] from Baccarat are much rarer, and with few exceptions, much nicer.” Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty. 27 Antique Clichy millefiori and roses blue and white barber pole chequer paperweight. A green, red and white complex cog cane presides at the center of two spaced concentric rings of complex canes, which include a white and red rose and two iconic pink and green roses. Each cane is individually framed by latticinio-encased cobalt blue and white twist segments, organized in a traditional chequer pattern and set above a layer of parallel white latticinio strips. Excellent condition and internal flaw.

30 Antique Giovanni Franchini 1845 silhouettes round swirl plaque. A date cane, recognizable as the one found in the famous Bigaglia paperweights, centers a spaced ring of alternating pink complex canes and animal silhouettes, including a dog, two horses and two ducks. Alternating spaced rods of blue, white and copper aventurine form a swirl beneath the animals, with an aventurine, white and blue stave cushion pressed in the interior. Clear ground. Fine condition.

31 Rare antique Baccarat yellow wheatflower and millefiori garland faceted paperweight. Two tiers of six rounded black-dotted yellow petals are joined at their nexus by a complex white stardust and red bull’s-eye cane, below a crown of five green leaves, to form a nice wheatflower that sits atop a thin stem with a few more leaves. An uncommon garland of white stardust canes and red arrowhead canes encircles the bloom. Star-cut clear ground. “Only 14% of yellow examples are surrounded by a garland.”

A colorful assortment of complex canes in blue, red, green, yellow, purple and white, includes honeycomb, whorl, shamrock, quatrefoil, fortress and arrowhead canes, amongst others, and conceals the silhouette canes of a pair of lovebirds. A bit of lace peers between the canes. Signature/date cane.

40 Antique Baccarat millefiori butterfly and clematis paperweight. A butterfly, with marbled multi-colored millefiori wings of which the top ones are red and have central blue and white complex canes and the lower ones are in contrasting hues, an amethyst latticinio body and light blue eyes, hovers above a white double clematis with a star honeycomb center. Five green leaves emanate from behind the flower, which grows from a stem with a white bud and three additional leaves. Star-cut clear ground. Excellent condition.

43 Antique Baccarat hunting scene faceted paperweight. A detailed white sulphide depicts a single hunter, shotgun in hand, in the company of a large hunting dog. Two trees, rocks and some low grasses complete the motif which is viewed against a transparent cranberry ground. Large honeycomb faceting to the side and one top facet. Similar example pictured and discussed in The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights, page 175. Good condition.

44 Antique Baccarat interlaced millefiori trefoil garlands overlay faceted paperweight. An arrowhead cane is encircled by a ring of red bull’s-eye-centered stardust canes to form a central design around which a trefoil garland of white complex cog canes interlaces with a trefoil garland of red crimp canes. A green bull’seye-centered white stardust cane dots each loop. Clear ground. Blue-over-white double overlay, with six and one facets. Scalloped base edge, ringed by twelve printies. Good condition.

A stem, with a pair of additional leaves and a surprising third companion bud, sprouts to the right of the flower. A border garland of white crimp canes and arrowhead canes encircles the flower. Clear ground. Six and one facets, spaced by mitre-cuts that descend to the base.

Concentric tiers of C-shaped alveoli grow in size around a yellow stardust cane, forming a lush pompon blossom atop a short sinuous stem with two green leaves. Bidding

Bidding Process

Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Each bidder must be high bidder on at least one lot at all times during the auction. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second highest bidder. Bidding will continue until all under bidders have indicated that they no longer wish to bid, the high bidder will win the lot if their bid exceeds the reserve price (see Reserves). Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed and the winner determined. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the high bidder. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us of which lots you wish to drop. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to settle any disputes, determine bids, terminate accounts, remove and edit content, determine winners or cancel auctions at their sole discretion.

Excellent condition: Insignificant surface wear

Fine condition: Minor surface wear or damage below the sightline

Good condition: Visible but tolerable surface wear

Fair condition: Visible surface wear that obstructs the design

Internal flaws, including annealing cracks, will be mentioned separately.

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay, in U.S. dollars, the full amount of the hammer price, the Buyer’s Premium calculated on the hammer price, all shipping fees and all applicable taxes. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days. Split payments and payment plans are not accepted without prior approval, at the sole discretion L.H. Selman Ltd. A Buyer’s Premium of 20% will be applied to all forms of payment and an additional 3% will be applied to the total invoice as a processing fee for debit and credit card payments. We accept Visa, Mastercard, AmericanExpress and Discover cards, checks, cash, Zelle QuickPay and bank wire transfer payments. Bank wire transfer fees are the responsibility of the buyer. Orders are shipped using USPS Priority Mail, with Signature Confirmation required for delivery, once full payment is received. Alternate shipping methods are available and will be billed at cost, if requested by the buyer. Tracking information will be provided. Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $15 for the first paperweight and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. For shipments to Canada, the cost will be $45 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. For shipments to other international destinations, the cost will be $75 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. Price of shipping and insurance for over-sized items will vary according to size and weight. Buyers are responsible for providing a correct shipping address to L.H. Selman Ltd. and assume responsibility for undeliverable packages. Buyers are responsible for any additional fees required to take possession of the package.

Return Policy

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L.H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel that a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L.H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.
