Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 Extremely rare and impressive antique Bacchus millefiori mushroom bouquet magnum paperweight. Four rows of concentric millefiori cog tube canes, in pastel colors, are centered by a feathery pink cane and form the rounded top of a delicate mushroom. The outer ring of canes is decorated by a rarely added feature of a bordering pink and white torsade and is pulled downward through a blue and white torsade to form the stave stem of the mushroom, further embellished by yet another blue and white torsade embracing its base, over a clear ground. To add to this incredible labor, an additional blue and white torsade connects two opposing sides of the mushroom cap to form a handle for this incredible basket of millefiori. Pictured in the 1987 PCA Bulletin on page 30, in the 1997 PCA Bulletin on page 16 and mentioned and pictured on page 61 of Old English Paperweights by Robert Hall, “...the extra time involved in creating these special pieces would mean that they were certainly not production pieces, and were more likely to have been made in the glassworker’s own time to test his skill and technique”...“not content with a torsade handle to the basket, Bacchus went a little further in their experimenting and added a further three beneath the weight.” Minor surface wear. Diameter 3 1/2" $12,000 — 16,000

The flowers bloom on a single green stem with a tightly-closed green bud and four leaves over a hypnotizing white double-swirl latticinio cushion with an inner layer of translucent ruby. From the C. Frank Kireker Collection. Diameter 3 1/16" $9,000 — 12,000 2

26 Rare antique Baccarat pink snake on upset muslin paperweight. A light pink snake, with dark green markings and red eyes, coils on a cushion of white upset muslin. “Baccarat artisans merged two images of elegance with this portrayal of a snake on a lace cushion. One wonders what story lies behind its construction. The lace causes one to think that the piece belonged to a woman, or that it was meant to characterize a woman. Femme fatale-the idea of the female being alluring, yet possessing a painful bite, was a popular image in art and poetry at the time. Or, perhaps this is a representation of the serpent who tempted Eve. The entire presentation is masterfully put together.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition.
