Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 1 Rare antique Baccarat 1848 white and red stardust carpet ground paperweight. A coralrimmed moth silhouette cane is surrounded by an assortment of scattered complex millefiori in brilliant shades of red, yellow, purple, green, blue and orange. Included in the design is an additional moth cane, a red flower picture cane and the Gridel canes of a deer, a goat, a dog, a horse, two rooster canes and an elephant. The canes are nestled in a dense carpet of red-centered white stardust canes. Signature/date cane. In 1847, Joseph Emil Gridel, the nine-year-old nephew of Baccarat manager JeanBaptiste Toussaint, cut out eighteen different animals he had drawn and was pasting them onto paper when his uncle spotted them. The designs eventually became models for silhouette cane molds. In 1848, M. Toussaint was able to give the young artist a paperweight containing fifteen of the animals. Gridel grew up to be a famous painter and today his work can be found throughout Europe. Diameter 3 1/16" $15,000 — 20,000 2

2 Rare antique Saint Louis four-paneled close packed millefiori paperweight. An unusually large gathering of concentric blue tubes, white cogs and pink tubes forms a complex millefiori that sits at the crossroads of four radiating rows of delicate reddotted white stardust canes. Each row of six canes curves and diminishes towards the horizon. The exquisite dichotomy between the angularly spaced rows and the circular nature of paperweight and cane is emphasized by blue, coral and white twists that flank the white rows. The resulting channels invoke luxurious European gardens’ hedges, each spaced by carefully landscaped explosions of close packed millefiori in white, pistachio, coral and cobalt blue. A very small canine silhouette enjoys a stroll at the perimeter, perhaps hoping to catch one of the scattered dancing devils in the nearby fields. Diameter 3" $16,000 — 20,000 2

A yellow match-head sits at the center of a double-tiered white clematis that blooms upright and crowns a wonderful assortment of lampwork and millefiori flowers gathered into radial green leaves. Clear ground. Pink-overwhite double overlay, with six and one facets, encased in clear glass. “Encased double overlays, however, are a remarkable achievement on any terms. The inner overlaid paperweight had to be annealed and, when cold, faceted like any other overlay weight, often more elaborately. Then the overlaid weight had to be reheated so that an outer covering of clear glass would adhere without cracking the original weight. When one considers the overlay design requirements ... it is no wonder these intricate weights are much sought after and very expensive to acquire.” —Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows. 120 Damon MacNaught (2017) open concentric millefiori on latticinio inlayed wood table. A delightful assortment of complex cog and ruffle canes is carefully spaced in concentric rings on a carpet of long fine latticinio tubes and sealed in a layer of pristine clear glass to create a smooth table surface, inlayed in a tasteful custom-designed wood tabletop and accompanied by a brass plate engraved “BAREGLASS STUDIOS D.MACNAUGHT 2017”. This unique and innovative design by the artist was developed in his Tennessee studio over several years, inspired by classic paperweight technique and design, in close collaboration with hand-selected fellow artists. The canes are fused with glass under intense heat to seal the elements and elicit a slight bloom. After multiple firings in a kiln, the underlying glass became the top surface and was skillfully polished to a brilliant shine by coldwork artist Andrew Najarian, purposely designed with slight thickness to allow for future polishing if desired. The wood table was handcrafted by collaborator Stephan Micheletto-Blouin, an artist formally trained in fine woodworking, who contributed his own ideas, including the overall table design, choice of finishes and selection of precious and responsibly acquired woods, to complement MacNaught’s vision. The table was ingeniously constructed with African mahogany, Spanish cedar and East Indian rosewood in a design that allows for the removal of the millefiori plate. A tilttop mechanism allows the artwork to shift smoothly from a horizontal table position to a vertical display position. Further details on the woodwork are available upon request. Glass diameter 12", thickness 5/8" Table diameter 16 1/2", height 29 1/4" Estimates $5,500 — 6,500 www.selman.com
