Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 Rare antique Clichy spaced concentric millefiori on moss ground paperweight. A wine-red and white pastry mold conceals a yellow rod bundle and floret cane in its center and sits within a ring of six spaced millefiori, each different from the next and including an iconic pink and green rose cane. Another concentric ring ensues, having a slight hexagonal flair to its twelve spaced canes, including an edelweiss cane and a surprisingly hidden rose cane. The colorful millefiori rest in a cambered lawn of dark green rod bundle moss canes, of which each section is dotted with a red-centered white floret. “The ground of green moss dotted with stars and florets recalls the most charming of French Touraine tapestries of the XVIth century. It does not seem possible to achieve a higher expression of art on the road of paperweight making.” —French Crystal Paperweights. “The most sought after, and undoubtedly the most striking, spaced millefiori are the moss green carpet grounds. The prize possessions of a few advanced collectors, these weights feature a ground of many small green canes contrasting jubilantly with the colorful spaced florets.” —Paperweights for Collectors. Good condition. Diameter 2 5/8" $16,000—20,000

2 Extremely rare and historically important antique Pietro Bigaglia and Giovanni Franchini 1845 Queen of Greece Amalia of Oldenburg paperweight. Giovanni Franchini produced exquisite picture and word canes that were utilized in Pietro Bigaglia’s famous paperweights. The date of “30 set 1845” was particularly important since it commemorates the very special day in September when King Otto I of Greece’s wife, Queen Amalia, visited Venice, as indicated by the letter “A” appearing below a picture cane of a crown. A few other monogrammed examples were made for special guests during this same occasion, including one with the letter “O” for the King of Greece himself. The Queen’s paperweight represents a typical Bigaglia burst of strong colors and goldstone made from a dense gathering of bits of ribbons, canes and filigree. Picture canes of rose bushes, harlequins, a pantaloon, a checkerboard, horses, birds, a gondola and a variety of complex millefiori, representing the zeitgeist of 1845 Venice that Franchini wanted to impress on the special visitors, are scattered on the surface of the colorful background. Pictured and discussed in the PCC newsletter #100, August 2009, on page 16 and in Identifying Glass Paperweights: The Less Familiar on page 68. Fair condition and typical internal flaw as seen in numerous other Bigaglia paperweights. Diameter 3 1/16" $16,000—20,000

The term “carpet” was first used to describe these weights in the Catalogue des collections des arts et métiers (Paris, 1855). “Carpet grounds, usually associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.” —Paperweights: Flowers Which Clothe the Meadows.
