The large clematis, with a similar yellow honeycomb/star cane center, has two tiers of eight ridged white petals, and is crowned by four bright green leaves. The rare buttercup, with a bundle of upright yellow star stamens, shares a twisted green stem with a pale turquoise bud and three green leaves. The bouquet floats over clear, star-cut ground. “Large multifloral bouquets were a specialty of Baccarat and displayed the highest degree of skill in lampwork and millefiori techniques.” —Baccarat: Paperweights and Related Glass, 1820-1860. Minor cullet in dome, separated stem. Diameter 3 1/2" $18,000 — 22,000 312-583-1177

3 3 Rare antique Clichy spaced concentric millefiori on prairie moss cane carpet ground paperweight.  A central blue and white cog cane is surrounded by eighteen spaced assorted complex millefiori, including cog, star, crimp and pastry mold canes, in shades of blue, purple, pink, red and white. Included in the design is a green and white Clichy rose cane and a type II pink and green Clichy rose cane, all nestled in a carpet of prairie moss canes with central white florets. Large bubble in dome. Minor surface wear. “Clichy utilized its moss ground in this weight to create the illusion of vibrant wildflowers on a green lawn. It is an extraordinary example of the factory’s color vocabulary.” The Art of the Paperweight - Challenging Tradition. “One of the most sought after paperweight designs is Clichy’s striking spaced millefiori on moss green carpet ground.” —The Art of the Paperweight. Diameter 2 7/8" $15,000 — 20,000

4 4 Rare antique Baccarat dated blue star carpet ground millefiori paperweight.  A central salmon-pink, blue, green and white arrowhead/rod cane is surrounded by assorted spaced complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhouette canes of a dog, deer, butterfly, rooster, goat, and a pheasant/shamrock cane, on a lush carpet of cobalt blue and white six-point star canes. The term “carpet” was first used to describe these weights in the Catalogue des Collections des Arts et Métiers (Paris, 1855). “Carpet grounds, usually associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.” —Paperweights: “Flowers which clothe the meadows.” Diameter 3" $15,000 — 20,000

5 Rare antique Saint Louis faceted close-packed millefiori mushroom with torsade paperweight.  This unusual close-packed millefiori contains complex canes consisting of rods, stars, crosses, hollow tubes and florets in shades of green, red, blue and white. An amber spiral-encased torsade surrounds the bottom of the mushroom. One top facet and three rows of side facets, with a top row of eight facets and middle and bottom rows of ten along with the torsade, create an ornate Moorish jewel-like design. 8 Very rare antique Saint Louis blue forget-me-nots on double swirl latticinio paperweight.  A spray of four vibrantly colored blue forget-me-nots, all with yellow match-head centers, grows from slender light green stems along with four unusual darker green flat narrow leaves. The design rests on a white double swirling latticinio cushion. Forget-me-nots are seen more frequently in both antique Baccarat and Saint Louis bouquets, but are rarely seen in a single nosegay, and then only from Saint Louis. In the Victorian language of flowers, forget-me-nots were a symbol of true love and were associated with much folklore and legend regarding faithfulness and enduring love.
