Eight beautifully rendered, threedimensional flowers ring a ninth at the weight’s center. Each of a different color and slightly different articulation, they might be rich clematis interpretations - a flower, according to the language of flowers, that was thought to invoke “mental beauty”. They may also be dahlias, many-tiered and voluptuous, all formed around a ring of pale seed-like stamens punctuated at the core with a single white-rimmed cobalt blue cane. There are two each of pale butter yellow blooms, brilliant royal blue blooms, purple blooms and red, with a larger red bloom reigning at the very heart of the design. Eight emerald green bladed leaves alternate with the eight radial flowers from beneath, peeking through the lush flora. Encased in clear ground, the weight is cut with eight inward-leaning panel facets beveled at the top as they reach up to a large top facet . Small chip to facet. “These paperweights rank among the most beautiful and sophisticated in the genre.” —Paperweights: Collection Friedrich Bader, Wiener Kunst Auktionen. 132 132 Paul Stankard 1999 botanical sculpture with word canes. A large clear glass sculpture. A realistic interpretation of nature which can be viewed from the front, sides and back of the piece contains a wildflower bouquet with ants, moss, roots and multiple word canes, including the words “scent”, “moist”, “dew”, “fertile” and “seeds”. Entangled in the roots below the soil of the floral cluster of white pineland pickerel weeds are two “earth spirits”. Opposite the bouquet is a single green pod floating below a spray of red berries, all encased in clear crystal with a translucent dark green laminated band surrounding the base. “What Paul makes is at once decorative art and art. What he produces is contemplative, awe-inspiring, and spiritual. In this studio, eighteenth-and nineteenth-century glass traditions are fused and transformed into something unique, both in terms of the past and in terms of contemporary studio glass... And so Paul illuminates the physical “words” of God. With his tiny fragments of glass, shaped miraculously into authentic renditions of living wild flowers, he draws the worldly eye to the triumph of his artifice. www.selman.com
And in doing so he reminds the viewer of the real miracle, the wildflower itself, which for Paul is the living presence of God.” Paul J. Stankard: Homage to Nature by Ulysses G. Dietz, Curator of Decorative Arts at The Newark Museum, Newark New Jersey. “Paul Stankard has established the standard by which we judge contemporary paperweight art. His creativity in producing the lampworked elements goes far beyond simply evoking nature realistically; his work evidences originality, whimsy and poetic vision in addition to technical mastery which places him in a class by himself.” —Dwight P. Lanmon, director, Winterthur Museum, Garden and Library, and former director of The Corning Museum of Glass. Signed/dated 1991. Height 5 5/8", depth 5 5/8", width 4 3/4" $15,000 — 20,000 Summer 2014
