Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1

Extremely rare antique Baccarat interlaced millefiori trefoil garlands on stardust ground paperweight. Beautifully executed, a red and white bull’s-eye cane, at the heart of a white stardust cane, initiates the delicate spread of a white stardust carpet ground that briefly gives way to a circle of sky blue and white complex canes and then to two interlaced trefoil garlands, one of green arrow canes and the other of coral-colored bundle canes with star centers. From Sotheby’s, London, 28 October 1968, lot 61. Exhibited: Sotheby’s, London, The Batiste Collection, 16th-24th November 2000. See Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty, page 60, figure 194. Excellent condition. Diameter 3 1/8" $15,000—20,000

Antique Baccarat 1848 scattered millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on red carpet ground paperweight. Various complex canes, including the Gridel silhouette canes of a deer, a horse, a pheasant, a goat, a rooster, a moth and a flower picture cane, are scattered across a red carpet. Each red and white cane of the carpet is centered by a blue and white six-pointed star. Signature/date cane. In 1847, Joseph Emil Gridel, the nine-year-old nephew of Baccarat manager Jean-Baptiste Toussaint, cut out eighteen different animals he had drawn and was pasting them onto paper when his uncle spotted them. The designs eventually became models for silhouette cane molds. In 1848, M. Toussaint was able to give the young artist a paperweight containing fifteen of the animals. Gridel grew up to be a famous painter and today his work can be found throughout Europe. Excellent condition. Diameter 2 7/8" $9,000—12,000 Winter 2019

Extremely rare antique Pantin pink dahlia paperweight. Tiers of cascading light pink pointed petals, each edged in darker pink, create a lush and dimensional dahlia that blooms atop a dark green stem flanked by sprigs of variegated leaves and a tightly closed bud. Silvery air bubbles give the appearance that morning dew has sanctified the elegant flower as it looks upward towards the light of a rising sun. Clear ground. Diameter 3 3/16" $20,000—30,000

Very rare antique Baccarat cabbage rose paperweight. A cabbage rose, much less frequent than its rounded “thousand petal” cousin, has embellished ruffled petals and outer petals that caress the design intimately. The rose sits atop a slender curving stem, flanked by two trios of dark green leaves. Another trio of leaves and then a spaced pair halo the bloom. Clear, star-cut ground. “Two types of rose were made by Baccarat. The first is a thousand petaled rose with flat, round outside petals, representing 91% of their roses. The other 9% of Baccarat roses are cabbage roses, which have larger, ruffled outside petals.” —Baccarat Paperweights; Two Centuries of Beauty. Diameter 2 1/2" $6,000—8,000 5

Rare antique Clichy pink flower paperweight. The canes demonstrate a broad range of colors, another rarity for Bacchus paperweights, including both dark and pastel shades of blue, red, white and green. This reminds me that there is always more than one way to look at life”.
