1 Rare antique Mount Washington pink camellia and forget-me-not wreath magnum paperweight. A sumptuous pink-shaded camellia, with tiers of cascading petals, is the parent of two buds, a forward-facing pink one and a side-facing white one, each cupped by green sepals, which have emerged from a sturdy stem. The flower has three spaced leaves peeking from behind and is surrounded by a green vine with ten blue forget-me-not flowers, each dotted by a yellow match-head center. In Victorian flower language, the camellia is a symbol of peace and calm, while forget-me-nots are associated with remembrance and memories. The design was carefully constructed to pass a soothing message to a loved one. Clear ground. Excellent condition. Diameter 4 1/2" $26,000—30,000 2

2 Rare antique Baccarat 1848 spaced millefiori and Gridel silhouettes on white and red stardust carpet ground paperweight. A coral-rimmed moth silhouette cane is surrounded by an assortment of spaced concentric complex millefiori in brilliant shades of red, coral, yellow, purple, green and blue. Spaced amongst the millefiori are picture canes of a red flower, as well as the Gridel silhouettes of another moth, a goat, a deer, two dogs, a horse, a rooster and an elephant. The canes are nestled in a dense carpet of red-centered white stardust canes, with a white upset muslin interior visible from the underside. Signature/ date cane. Good condition. 3 Rare antique Bacchus close concentric red and white millefiori paperweight. A central trio of red and white hollow ruffle canes is surrounded by a ring of white ruffle canes, a ring of red and white ruffle canes and another ring of white ruffle canes, giving the impressing of an all-white carpet ground with a few passionate red accents. An outer ring of solid white rods, each with a red six-point stars at the center, is pulled downward into a sturdy stave basket for an otherwise delicate design. “Entirely apart from their rarity, their workmanship entitles them to be included in every collection of any consequence.” —1999 PCA Bulletin. Fine condition with internal flaw. Diameter 2 3/4" $4,000—6,000

4 Antique Clichy interlaced quatrefoil millefiori garland paperweight. A beautifully executed design features two interlaced quatrefoil garlands, one comprised of red and white pastry mold canes and another of bright blue and white crimped cogs, all framing two concentric rings of green and pink pastry mold canes. A large cobalt blue and white pastry mold centers the design, which rests on a bed of white upset muslin, above parallel latticinio rods. “Whether woven to celebrate love, victory or merely beauty, the millefiori garlands found in patterned spacing schemes are among the most graceful and delicate ornaments found in paperweights.” —Paperweights for Collectors. 5 Rare antique Baccarat paneled millefiori on aqua honeycomb carpet ground paperweight. A red, white and blue arrowhead cane centers three concentric rings of complex canes, one of blue star-centered red bull’s-eye cogs, another of more arrowhead canes and the outer one of white and red star cogs, to create the center of a flower-shaped design, with each of six radiating petals garlanded by white cogs with seven central blue stars, of alternating red or blue complex canes like the ones from the center of the flower. The design is set into a sea of aqua honeycomb canes that flows to the base. A filigree cushion peers through the base. Paul Hollister, in The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, compared the detailed grounds of these weights to needlepoint. Fine condition. Diameter 2 1/2" $6,000—8,000 www.selman.com

6 Rare antique Baccarat pansy, buttercup and clematis flat bouquet faceted paperweight. A dazzling and rare four-flower group includes a large white buttercup, with a yellow stardust center, flanked by two Type-I pansies, with dark upper petals and a trio of cobalt blue and white arrowhead cane lower petals, below a white double clematis, with a cog cane center. A light green vine, bearing a blue bud and green leaves, entwines a central dark green stem. Six and one faceting. Clear, star-cut base. “In contrast to the work of the other French factories, Baccarat produced conspicuously formal floral arrangements. These masterfully portrayed flowers combine to form a delightful garden. The millefiori cane sections that compose the bottom of the pansies indicate that this weight was produced in the early part of the classic period.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. 7 Very rare antique Baccarat blue fringed gentians and aventurine leaves paperweight. Three bell-shaped vivid blue gentians, slightly variegated and with rims edged in white, grow from a long green vine, along with a small blue bud and numerous sparkling green aventurine leaves. Clear, star-cut ground. Considered to be one of the more naturalistic and charming flowers from 19th century Baccarat, the flower is an established symbol of the Alps, as it is found in sunny alpine meadows. “One of the rarer flowers known from Baccarat... 8 Rare antique Baccarat “thousand petal” red rose and aventurine leaves paperweight. Six green leaves crown an expertly crafted multi-tiered red rose, as it blooms atop a gently curved stem, with two additional green leaves. Some of the leaves are dusted with green aventurine. Clear, star-cut ground. “So called because of its numerous petals, the unmistakable splendor of the “thousand petaled” rose speaks of a love with boundless intensity. 9 Rare antique Baccarat interlaced millefiori trefoil garlands and Gridel silhouette overlay faceted paperweight. A lone black rooster silhouette, against a white-cored yellow cog cane, is the center of a ring of green bull’s-eye centered white stardust canes, inside two interlaced trefoil garlands of white stardust and green and white star complex canes. Clear ground. Translucent ruby red overlay. Six and one facets with 12 long side thumb prints at the base. Good condition. Diameter 3 3/8" $5,000—6,000

10 Antique Baccarat 1848 spaced millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. An assortment of spaced complex millefiori includes a primrose cane, with a square center of red and purple stars, and a variety of Gridel silhouettes, including a goat, horse, deer, monkey, dog, elephant, moth and two roosters, which encircle a large moth cane at the apex. The canes rest on an impressively lush cushion of large white lace scattered with pieces of colored filigree and segments of canes. Signature/date cane. Excellent condition. 11 Rare antique Baccarat 1849 spaced millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A large arrowhead cane centers spaced millefiori, including fine complex canes with shamrocks, stars, bull’s-eyes, arrowheads, a flower and silhouettes of three Gridel animals, the goat, deer and dog. The elegant design boasts an understated and rare, but backwards, 1849 date cane at the periphery. Dense pure white upset muslin cushion ground. Fine condition. 12 Very rare antique Baccarat Swan-on-a-pond hollow faceted paperweight. A delicately-crafted dimensional white swan, with red eyes and a black beak, glides at the center of a placid clear pond, ringed by a green and white jasper bank, over a star-cut ground. Swans were a common heraldic symbol, standing for beauty and grace, a fitting motif for such a well-conceived paperweight. Six and one facets. “All of these designs are very rare. 13 Rare antique Baccarat millefiori primrose bouquet and garland paperweight. A rare Type II primrose, its five petals made of white cog slices with cobalt blue centers, is joined on a sinuous forking stem by a pastry mold-style complex cane and five crenulated green leaves. A border garland of alternating red cogs and white stardust canes, with green bull’s-eye centers, encircles the bouquet. Clear ground. Diameter 2 7/16" $1,500—2,000

14 Uncommon antique Baccarat open concentric millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A large white stardust and blue bull’s-eye cane presides at the center of a spaced circle of three green bull’s-eye centered white stardust canes in alternation with three variously colored Gridel canes, the deer, goat and moth. A garland of six large pastry mold-style complex canes, spaced by three red bull’s-eye centered white stardust canes, frames the design. Clear ground. Good condition. Diameter 3 1/16" $1,000—1,500 6

15 Antique Baccarat millefiori butterfly and clematis compound paperweight. A butterfly, with marbled multi-color millefiori wings of which the top ones have hues of red, green and blue, an amethyst latticinio body and light blue eyes, hovers above a large white double clematis with a large honeycomb center. Five green leaves crown the flower, which grows from a short stem with a large white bud and four additional leaves. Clear ground. “...lampwork butterflies are placed above floral motifs encased in clear glass to create the illusion of their hovering in space.” —Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute of Chicago. 16 Antique Baccarat hunting scene faceted paperweight. A detailed white sulphide depicts a single hunter, shotgun in hand, in the company of a large hunting dog. Two trees, rocks and some low grasses complete the motif which is viewed against a transparent cranberry ground. Large honeycomb faceting to the side and one top facet. Similar example pictured and discussed in The Dictionary of Glass Paperweights, page 175. Good condition. Diameter 3 3/8" $3,500—4,000

17 Very rare antique Baccarat “Légion d’honneur” enameled gold-foil medal paperweight. A replica of the obverse of the French Legion of Honor medal has a white Maltese asterisk above a wreath of green laurel leaves on the left and oak leaves on the right. A blue seal inscribed with “Bonaparte I consul 1802” surrounding a radiant profile of Napoleon I, centers the wreath, all in colored enamel over gold-foil. The medal hangs from a goldfoil chain, from a red enameled ribbon. Established by Napoleon Bonaparte, for military and civil service, the Legion is France’s premier order. “Enameled gold and silver foil incrustations are normally found in paperweight related objects...They are very rare in paperweights.” —Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty. 18 Antique Saint Louis two-colored crown paperweight. Twisted ribbons of red and green, with a white edge, alternate with white latticinio ribbons, which alternate between single strand and four-stand ribbons, and cascade into a cambered crown from a contrasting cobalt blue, white, green and red rod bundle complex cane at the apex. 19 Antique Saint Louis 1848 close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A mushroom cap is composed of a large red, green and white complex cane, which sits at the center of five cascading concentric rings of millefiori in blue, white, pink and green. The outer ring is tapered downward to form an alternating pink and white stem for the mushroom. A blue-encased white chaplet bead torsade, topped by a single mercury ring, encircles the base of the stem. Clear, star-cut ground. Signature/date cane. Excellent condition. 20 Antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori mushroom and red torsade paperweight. A large central pink complex cane is encircled by a ring of green complex canes, a ring of white sawmill cog canes and an outer ring of cobalt blue and white star staves, pulled downward into an impressive stem. The deep blue stem reflects in the two mercury rings of a tightly-wound red and white torsade at the base of the stem and creates an unusual dramatic terrace effect. Clear, star-cut ground. A single clematis, with two layers of ribbed white petals around a yellow and pink match-head cane center, sits atop a short green stem, framed by two crenulated green leaves. 22 Very rare antique New England Glass Company pink pompon on jasper ground paperweight. Tiers of hollow C-shaped pink canes surround a central yellow and orange multiple cog cane. The flower sits atop a short stem with a halo of five spaced green leaves. Blue and white jasper ground. “To top it off, the artisan arranged this lampwork flower on a stunning blue and white jasper ground, like a wondrous corsage pinned on a sequined gown.” —The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. Boldly colored millefiori, including the combined silhouettes of a man walking his dog, are spaced on a cambered cushion of white upset muslin and colorful bits of twists. Good condition. 25 Antique European, attributed to Val Saint-Lambert or Pantin, patterned millefiori and roses paperweight. A cobalt blue-collared red and white cog cane is encircled by a ring of delicate white tube roses. From this cluster, six radial arms of canes, including two of white roses, launch outward to separate small circle garlands of contrasting canes, each with a contrasting center, including pink and green roses. 26 Antique Clichy pink flower, bud and leaves paperweight. A light pink flower, its two alternating tiers of six petals each, conjoined by a dusty rose nexus, rises from a short straight green stem, flanked by pairs of smooth leaves on either side. An additional pair of leaves peeks from behind the bloom and three leaves emerge as a fan atop the bloom, together with a pink companion bud. Clear ground. Fine condition. A rich assortment of canes, including six-point star, stardust, whorl, arrowhead, leaf, honeycomb, shamrock, trefoil and quatrefoil canes, creates a colorful tightly-packed carpet where silhouette canes of a dog, goat, rooster, monkey, lovebirds and horse meander. A generous array of Gridel silhouette canes, including an elephant, a pheasant, a goat, a dog, a monkey, a horse, a deer, a rooster and a squirrel, is scattered around a flower picture cane, with whorls, rod bundles, another flower picture cane and star complex canes. The brilliantly and variously colored canes sit atop an elaborate cushion of white upset muslin, threaded with rainbow hues and punctuated with a date cane. Fine condition. A pansy flower is comprised of two deep purple upper petals and three yellow and purple lower petals around a white stardust and yellow bull’s-eye cane. Four green leaves peak from behind the bloom as it blooms from a short stem with a cobalt blue bud and additional green leaves. Pink and green pseudo rose canes, with a small yellow stamen cluster at each of their centers, are part of a carefully arranged concentric pattern of alternating complex millefiori, which culminates in a ring of blue and white canes around a white and red stars cane at the apex. A basket of green vertical staves encircles the design. Excellent condition. Diameter 2 7/8" $300—400 43 Antique Clichy millefiori garland paperweight. A complex garland is composed of four spaced and alternating rings of purple cogs, white stars complex canes, blue rod bundles and green bull’seyes complex canes. A spaced ring of white and green canes, with white floret centers, graces the interior of the garland, with a white stars complex cane at the apex. Opaque pink ground. Spinning inwards in a clockwise motion, ribbons of alternating white and dark purple disappear into a vortex, occupied by a central blue and white complex cane. Fine condition. A lively assortment of whole and partial complex canes, including several iconic roses, ruffles, cogs, stars, pastry molds and bull’s-eyes, gives a peek into the factory’s daily work.
