Part i: a ntique Pa Perweights and r elated objects

1 Rare antique Mount Washington pink rose buds magnum paperweight. A large pink-shaded rose, with tiers of cascading petals, is flanked by two companion buds, each cupped by green sepals and emerging from a sturdy stem, and is crowned by a halo of five dew-studded green leaves. Clear ground. Good condition and internal flaws, with rough pontil mark.

2 Antique European, attributed to Russia, 1847 scrambled millefiori paperweight. A dense cambered gathering of complex millefiori, several repeating throughout the design, including arrow head canes, stars, crimps and bull’s-eyes, is the blue, red, purple and white playground of a Cyrillic “KT” cane, a large date cane and two bird silhouettes, the latter two the only green elements in the design. The unusual collection of canes is discussed in the 2002 and 2007 PCA Bulletins, on pages 9-14 and 64-65 respectively, and attributed to Russian artists. “The Russian Empire invited art masters from around the world, so it’s possible that some millefiori glass masters immigrated to Russian from Bohemia, Silesia, or France. This would explain why Russian paperweights are very hard to find but are excellent examples of glassmaking art.” Fine condition.

3 Spectacular and very rare antique Saint Louis four-pan eled close packed millefiori and silhouette paperweight. In the style of the dazzling European decorative gardens, four triangular panels of tightly-packed and varied millefiori canes, including the silhouette of a dog, are separated by a cruciform of white com plex canes, bordered by white filament-encased pistachio-green twists, with a large complex cane at the apex. Previously from the New York Historical Society. Pictured and discussed in Glass Paperweights of the New York Historical Society, page 31, plate 13. Excellent condition.

4 Outstanding and rare antique Baccarat cinquefoil garland with Gridel canes paperweight. A central red, blue and white arrowhead cane is encircled by a ring of green and white star and bull’s-eye canes, which in turn is surrounded by a five-loop garland, each one a unique loop of complex canes, including cogs, crosses, stars and four-leaf clovers in white, yellow, red, green and blue. A single Gridel cane of a goat, a squirrel, a rooster, a horse and a deer punctuate each of the garland’s inner curves. White upset muslin cushion ground.

5 Very fine and rare antique Clichy C-scroll garlands and close concentric millefiori paperweight. A large red, white and blue pastry mold cane centers three concentric rings of contrasting millefiori, one of deep purple crimp canes, one of white and red edelweiss and one of nineteen pink and green iconic rose canes. Six C-scroll garlands, each different from the next, include two garlands or roses, one with eight pink and white roses and the other with seven pink and green roses, mark the brand of Clichy. Clear ground.

6 Rare antique Saint Louis dimensional pink dahlia on latticinio swirl paperweight. A beautiful and lush flower, with cascading tiers of thin variegated pink petals, has a red and white floret at its nexus and sits atop a radically curving stem shared by three ribbed dark green leaves. 7 Rare antique Baccarat upright flower and millefiori bouquet faceted paperweight. A rare blue and white arrow cane type II primrose centers an upright bouquet built upon four tiers of green leaves that are drawn down into a gathered and tapering stem. Framing the primrose are four flowers, two white and two blue, each centered by a complex cane. A spiraling blue and white torsade encircles the base. Star-cut clear ground. Three tiers of side facets in graduating size and one top facet. “[Upright bouquets] from Baccarat are much rarer, and with few exceptions, much nicer.” —Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty. 8 Very rare antique Baccarat stardust mushroom close packed millefiori and blue torsade paperweight. A rare white stardust mushroom culminates in a colorful close packed display of complex arrow, trefoil, star, shamrock, fortress and bull’s-eye canes. A blue-encased white twist torsade surrounds the stem of the mushroom. Clear, star-cut ground. “Baccarat made mostly closepack mushrooms...A rare variation has an outside row of stardust canes which is pulled down to form the stem.” —Baccarat Paperweights: Two Centuries of Beauty. 9 Antique Saint Louis lush upright bouquet stopper and clear fancy-cut decanter. A small clear vessel, adorned with geo metric faceting and rising into a thin neck with elegant elongated facets to a flared rim, is topped by a geometrically faceted clear stopper that contains a lush bouquet of small lampwork flowers and millefiori buds, in red, white, blue and yellow, cupped by serrated green leaves. 10 Antique Saint Louis two-colored crown etched faceted penholder. A flared clear vessel, engraved with a trailing ivy vine with tendrils and leaves leading up to a blue and white torsade rim, terminates in a clear glass collar resting above a crown cushion with red and green twisted ribbons alternating with white latticinio twists, radiating from a central yellow, salmon and blue complex cane. Eight printies encircle the base of the vessel. Fine condition.

11 Antique English, attributed to Bacchus, close packed millefiori paperweight. Ruffle, cog, star and honeycomb canes, in salmon-pink, cobalt, emerald green, mint green and white, with accents of yellow and purple, are gathered and drawn to an extremely fine size, inside a border ring of green-cored white cogs that is pulled downward into a stave basket. Pictured and discussed on page 49 of Old English Paperweights. “The majority of the canes are well known cogs and ruffles, but a very rare honeycomb cane can be seen with careful viewing.” Appeared in L.H. 12 Antique Clichy interlaced quatrefoil millefiori garlands paperweight. A lovely design begins with an iconic pink and green rose at its focus, ringed by green pastry mold canes and then by canes in deep red and white. Two interlaced quatrefoil garlands, one of white and green edelweiss canes and one of bubble-gum pink cog complex canes, surround the central motif, all against a bright sky-blue ground. 14 Antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A striking pistachio-green 28-point cog, with ruffled white edges, cups a quartet of pink-lined blue and white star rods, providing the color palette for a ring of com plex canes that encircles the cog, followed by a contrasting ring of similar complex canes. The concentric green, pink, blue and white design is cambered atop a basket of large blue and white star staves, pulled downward into an elegant stem. A cobalt blue and white torsade, with two mercury rings, lines the perimeter. Clear, star-cut ground. Excellent condition.

A central green pastry mold cane is enclosed by six rings of variously-colored crimped and pastry mold canes, including one ring of white and pink Clichy roses alternating with red and blue cog canes. The arrangement rests in a basket of alternating blue and white staves.

17 Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori and carnation mushroom with torsade paperweight. Varied complex millefiori, including leaf, shamrock, star, cross, arrowhead, bundle, honey comb, trefoil and quatrefoil canes, burst outward into a colorful mushroom cap and include a pretty carnation picture cane. More canes trickle down the mushroom’s colorful stem, encircled by a well-formed blue-encased white torsade and one mercury ring. Clear, star-cut ground. Fine condition.

21 Antique French, attributed to Grenelle or Saint-Mandé, end-of-day scrambled millefiori and roses paperweight. A large shard white rose cane, with green sepals and a seven-sepal center cane, is the defining feature of a haphazard design with large pink stardust canes, Clichy-type pink roses, collared star canes, fragments of more white roses, hollow tubes and complex star canes. Slightly dark-hued clear ground. Good condition. Diameter 3 5/8"

22 Antique German (c. 1900) millefiori in tiered latticinio basket miniature paperweight. A large intriguing cobalt blue, yellow and white cane tops an impressive white latticinio basket with cascades of notched tiers. Clear ground. Fine condition. Diameter 1 13/16" $500—600

23 Antique Venetian millefiori round scent bottle. A portrait cane of a Venetian pantaloon character and a complex cane emerge from a sea of aventurine and colored glass in shades of red, blue and white. Finished with a brass stopper and bead chain. Excellent condition, with customary cracks.

24 Antique Baccarat yellow pompon, red bud and millefiori garland paperweight. Numerous tiers of thin C-shaped canes, in pale yellow graduating to salmon-pink, radiate around a cen tral green arrowhead cane to form a delicate pompon blossom that grows from a green curved stem, with two opposing leaves, below a crown of five leaves and a contrasting red bud. Alternating white and red millefiori form a border garland around the bloom. Melon-cut clear ground. Excellent condition.

25 Antique Baccarat white pompon, bud and millefiori garland paperweight. Shimmering specks adorn the green leaves and stem of a charming pure white pompon flower, its petals made of C-shaped canes that radiate around a central yellow stardust cane, and can also be found in the thin sepals of a companion white bud. An alternating red and white millefiori garland surrounds the bloom. Star-cut clear ground.

26 Antique Baccarat buttercup, red bud and millefiori garland paperweight. Six C-shaped blue petals ring six hollowed white petals around a central yellow stardust cane, forming a buttercup. The flower has a crown of four green leaves, a contrasting red bud peering from behind and sits atop a stem, flanked by aventurine-strewn green leaves. Alternating green and white complex millefiori form a border garland. Star-cut clear ground. Good condition.

27 Excellent antique Baccarat blue and white primrose paperweight. A large flower has a white and red stardust and bull’s-eye cane center, encircled by six blue and white striped petals. 28 Excellent antique Baccarat red and white primrose min iature paperweight. A primrose flower has six red petals, each elegantly striped with a thin arching white line, radiating from a central white stardust and red bull’s-eye cane. The bloom is crowned by three serrated green leaves and grows from a curving stem with a pair of bladed leaves. Star-cut clear ground. Excellent condition.

29 Antique Baccarat white and red anemone flower minia ture paperweight. Six ogee-tipped white petals, edged in red and with arching detail, radiate from a central white stardust and red bull’s-eye cane. A cinquefoil garland is composed of green complex star canes and encircles concentric blue star cluster canes, large pink pastry molds and a lone white star complex cane at the apex. Each of the garland’s lobes is filled with a white stardust cane, with a green bull’s-eye enter, and spaced by white and cobalt crimp canes on the outside. Opaque pink ground. 51 Antique Clichy millefiori chequer paperweight. A network of white filament twist segments is arranged in a traditional chequer pattern over a dense cushion of white upset muslin and creates the layout for a spaced pattern of colorful and varied complex canes, including two pseudo-rose canes.

52 Antique Clichy millefiori and roses chequer paperweight. Two concentric rings of spaced millefiori, including ruffles and pastry molds, are loosely separated by white latticinio tubes. Three iconic green and pink roses appear in a spaced row at the center of the design. An underlying layer of parallel rows of latticinio supports the design. Fair condition.

53 Unusual antique Clichy millefiori and signature cane chequer paperweight. Three concentric and spaced rings of canes, including a few pseudo roses, pasty molds, rod bundles and a signature cane, are separated by short white twists, over parallel latticinio tubes. The design sits on an unusual white latticinio swirl cushion. Clear ground.

54 Uncommon antique Saint Louis pink pompon with pansy paperweight. A pink pompon, made from C-shaped tubes around a central complex cane, sits atop a short straight stem with the rare addition of a purple and orange pansy, flanked by two crenulated green leaves, with another two leaves peeking from behind the bloom. Double-swirl white latticinio cushion. “Another uncommon design features a pink camomile with a pansy on a filigree cushion. This signature weight is one of St. Louis’ nicest bouquets.”

A pretty white pompon, with diaphanous outer petals and a tuft of yellow filament stamens at the center, is framed, unusually, by a companion bud and two spaced leaves. A pink pompon has loose petals around a small white millefiori stamen and is supported by a short dark green stem with two green leaves, while two additional green leaves frame it asymmetrically from behind along with a small red bud. 57 Antique Saint Louis upright bouquet and torsade faceted paperweight. A triple-tiered square-shaped cobalt blue flower sits atop a ring of alternating millefiori buds and small flowers, over a bed of crenulated green leaves which is pulled downward into a stem. A white filigree-encased translucent red torsade, with two mercury rings, encircles the bouquet. Star-cut clear ground. Allover geometric faceting. Formerly from the Rubloff Collection. 58 Antique Saint Louis upright bouquet and torsade fac eted paperweight. A perky white daisy flower crowns the top of an upright bouquet surrounded by two cane flowers and two additional lampwork flowers in pink and blue, all surrounded by bright green leaves on drawn stems. A cobalt blue spiral-encased white torsade encircles the base of the bouquet, bordered by two air-ring inclusions. Clear ground. Eight side facets and geometric concentric top facets. Excellent condition.

A red flower centers four lampwork and cane flowers in blue and white, with stems pulled downward and gathered into a bouquet with green leaves. Red and green twists and blue and red twists alternate with latticinio double-spirals, emanating from a blue-centered red and white six-point star cane, to create a crown cushion. Clear ground. 61 Antique Saint Louis 1848 end-of-day scrambled millefiori paperweight. A stylish date cane joins whole and partial canes, tubes, twists and filigree in pink, yellow, white, cobalt blue and green into a loosely radial pattern as a nice display of the glass house’s daily toil. White and blue lace visible from the underside.

A beautifully crafted nosegay is composed of five complex cane flowers in amber, white, red and blue, which are bordered by five dark green leaves on gathered stems. A lovely pansy, its two upper notched purple petals striped with blue and its three lower amber petals striped with black, has a yellow match-head center, a crown of three leaves and blooms at the end of a deeply curving thin stem, flanked by two leaves. Two similar intricate, complex and raised bou quets have been carved above and below the insculpture, in layers of red and black glass, on the surface of the textured core, featuring shaded blooming lilies and their buds. Participants are urged to read carefully the following explanation of the conditions of sale, which contain the terms on which L.H. Selman Ltd. conducts auctions. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to refuse any and all bids.

Bidding

Initial bidding begins Monday, October 17, 2022 at 9:00 am cst . All initial bids must be in hand on Monday, November 1, 2022 by 5:00 pm cst

Bids may be placed by mail, telephone, fax, email or on the web at www.selman.com/auction. If you use this site to participate in this auction, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your username and password and for restricting access to your com puter, and you agree to accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account.

After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily via phone, fax, email or web to check on the status of their bids. It is your responsibility to stay in daily contact with us so that the auction can proceed in an expeditious manner.

If you fail to contact us or if we are unable to reach you, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. If you are the last under bidder on a lot, L.H. Selman Ltd. in some cases will notify you of a 72-hour deadline to raise your bid above the high bid der’s bid. If you fail to act or respond, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

Bidding Process

Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Each bidder must be high bidder on at least one lot at all times during the auction. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second highest bidder. Bidding will continue until all under bidders have indicated that they no longer wish to bid, the high bidder will win the lot if their bid exceeds the reserve price (see Reserves). Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed and the winner determined. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the high bidder. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us of which lots you wish to drop. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to settle any disputes, determine bids, terminate accounts, remove and edit content, determine winners or cancel auc tions at their sole discretion.

Bids must be made in the following increments:

Up to $200: $10 $200 to $500: $25 $500 to $1,000: $50 $1,000 to $2,000: $100

Reserves

$2,000 to $5,000: $250 $5,000 to $10,000: $500 $10,000 and over: $1,000

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. In some cases, L.H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a bid below the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots that do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Condition

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

Excellent condition: Insignificant surface wear

Fine condition: Minor surface wear or damage below the sightline

Good condition: Visible but tolerable surface wear

Fair condition: Visible surface wear that obstructs the design

Internal flaws, including annealing cracks, will be mentioned sepa rately.

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced for the total amount due at the auction’s close. Successful bidders must pay a 20% commission on the hammer price of each item, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Payment is due on receipt of invoice; after 15 days a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged. We accept check, Visa, MasterCard, Discover, dig ital wallet and bank transfer payments. All checks must be drawn from U.S. banks. Payments submitted via credit card over $5,000 will incur a convenience fee of 2%. Payments via PayPal will incur a convenience fee of 5%. Multiple payment methods may be submit ted with permission under these circumstances. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until the full price has been paid.

Shipping

Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $15 for the first paper weight and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same ship ment. Signature is required for delivery. For shipments to Canada, the cost will be $35 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. For shipments to other international destinations, the cost will be $50 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. Price of shipping/insurance for oversized items will vary according to size and weight. Alternate shipping methods may be available, if desired.

Return Policy

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L.H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel that a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L.H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

All lots are sold on an “as is” basis. L.H. Selman Ltd. makes every effort to describe each lot with complete accuracy and accepts responsibility for the authenticity of the items offered for auction.
