1 Rare antique Clichy purple flower on latticinio paperweight. A purple flower, with six dew-covered petals, has a complex cane center composed of an outer ring of fourteen collared floret stamens that border a ring of hollow green and white tubes around a green ruffle cane. The bloom grows from a long straight stem studded with four crenulated green leaves. Fine double-swirl white latticinio cushion. “Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition.

2 Extremely rare antique New England Glass Company pink and white rose standard paperweight. The 18th Century novelty is celebrated and honored by a masterful representation of intermingled pink and white rope roses, spun into mottled leaves and stems to form a thick tree rose canopy, grafted atop a sturdy shaded-brown tree trunk. Clear ground. Previously from the New York Historical Society. Pictured and discussed in Glass Paperweights of the New York Historical Society, page 124, plate 106. Excellent condition.

3 Antique Silesian/Bohemian, attributed to Riesengebirge Josephinenhutte, spaced concentric millefiori and silhouette paperweight. Boldly-colored millefiori circlet canes, including the silhouettes of running rabbit, a dog and a monkey, encircle a central complex monkey silhouette cane and are spaced on a cambered cushion of white upset muslin, with bits of blue and red twists. Clear ground. Internal flaw.

4 Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. An assortment of colorful traditional complex canes includes a few star-ringed carnation canes, a pelican cane and a star-ringed dog cane. A cushion of upset muslin with bits of colorful twists peers from between the canes.

5 Rare antique Baccarat upright bouquet and torsade paperweight. A large cobalt blue flower, with a yellow core cupping a complex blue and white millefiori, has an unusual halo of alternating green, red and white sepals which launch an impressively lush cascade of curled green leaves and two red and white buds. A blue-encased white torsade encircles the cascading stem of the bouquet, topped by a mercury ring. Star-cut clear ground.

6 Rare antique Saint Louis blue and white marbrie paperweight. A large complex cane, with a ring of hollow pink rod canes around a ring of white stars, a ring of hollow yellow cogs and a central hollow white cog, tops a white cushion pressed with blue ribbons that are festooned in quadrants to create a traditional marbrie pattern. This very rare type of weight was made almost exclusively by Saint Louis and not many are known. The term marbrie is derived from the French word for marble. It was most likely chosen to describe the effect the glass artisans achieved with this design. The festooned marbrie design is believed to have been derived from an Old English decorative practice of displaying what were known as “witch balls”. Witch balls were hollow blown glass balls hung by the superstitious in their doorways to ward off evil spirits. Excellent condition.

7 Antique Saint Louis close concentric millefiori mushroom and torsade paperweight. A mushroom is centered by a large blue, white and coral complex cane encircled by five concentric rings of assorted complex canes, including rods, stars, hollow tubes and cogs, in salmon-pink, green, white and blue. The outer ring of white star canes is pulled down to form a tapered stem, which is encircled by a salmon pink-encased white chaplet bead torsade, topped by a mercury ring. Star-cut clear ground. Appeared previously in L.H. Selman Ltd.’s Summer 2012 51st auction as lot 13. Good condition.

8 Uncommon antique Baccarat close concentric millefiori mushroom paperweight. White stardust staves are arranged into a stem below a cambered mushroom cap, composed of concentric rings of shamrock complex canes, white stardust and collared-cog canes. The design is centered by a fortress and stars arrowhead complex cane, imprinted by a fragment of shamrock and bull’seye cane. A cobalt blue and white torsade frames the mushroom, over a star-cut clear ground.

9 Antique Baccarat millefiori butterfly and garland paperweight. A deep amethyst latticinio butterfly is framed on either side by rainbow-colored millefiori fore and hind wings and garlanded by a ring of alternating red and white cog canes. Star-cut clear ground. “These insects dazzle the viewer, the delicate archetypes of a vibrant imagination. The millefiori garland forms a decorative frame of flowers around the colorful insect.” —The Art of the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition.

10 Antique Baccarat 1848 spaced millefiori and Gridel silhouettes paperweight. A butterfly complex cane is encircled by spaced millefiori and Gridel silhouette canes in three rings, including dog, deer, horse, goat, monkey, rooster, swan and pheasant silhouettes, trefoils, six-pointed stars and arrowheads. The canes rest on a cushion of white upset muslin with bits of colorful filigree.

A green arrowhead cane centers a ring of white complex cogs, inside two interlaced garlands of contrasting millefiori, one in blue and the other in white and red, with a white stardust and red bull’s-eye cane dotting each loop of the garlands. A dancing devil complex cane is the departure point for eight white rods that radiate outward and define eight triangles alternating between a red and white jasper ground and a green and white jasper ground. A white sulphide of the Virgin Mary, surrounded by a large serpent and clouds as a young child stands in front of her carrying a globus cruciger, shines above a pressed transparent green ground. A nosegay, with three millefiori blossoms in pink, blue, red and white nestled within four variegated green leaves, is ringed by a double border garland of mainly white and red complex canes, with blue accents. Two little picture cane bees found their way to the fragrant bouquet by way of the inner border garland. Clear ground.

A signature/date cane, with a central silhouette of an iconic running rabbit and two more rabbits closing the circle of numbers, centers an air-bubble studded radial concentric pattern of alternating yellow and cobalt blue canes. A spaced border garland of complex canes conceals a red heart picture cane, possibly as a hidden message. A 32-strand double-swirl white latticinio cushion supports the design, over a clear ground. A dimensional forking tree branch, sporting small leaves interspersed with six tulip tree flowers in various stages of bloom from sheathed bud to fully-splayed flower, has been sculpted inward into a frosted insculpture, viewed through a slanted top window to a textured surface. An intricate, complex and raised network of branches and leaves has been carved in a layer of black glass all around the textured clear core, and supports upright blooming tulip tree flowers, which have been carved in additional layers of white and red glass. The delicate features and color to the dimensional carving could only be achieved through the utmost control and mastery of the incredibly difficult technique of diatreta. Participants are urged to read carefully the following explanation of the conditions of sale, which contain the terms on which L.H. Selman Ltd. conducts auctions. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to refuse any and all bids.

Bidding

Initial bidding begins Monday, February 13, 2023 at 9:00 am cst .

All initial bids must be in hand on Monday, February 27, 2023 by 5:00 pm cst .

Bids may be placed on the web at www.selman.com , by telephone at 800-538-0766 or 312-583-1177 or by email at info@paperweight.com. If you use the website to participate in this auction, you are responsible for maintaining the confidentiality of your username and password and for restricting access to your computer, and you agree to accept responsibility for all activities that occur under your account.

After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily via phone, fax, email or web to check on the status of their bids. It is your responsibility to stay in daily contact with us so that the auction can proceed in an expeditious manner.

If you fail to contact us or if we are unable to reach you, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. If you are the last under bidder on a lot, L.H. Selman Ltd. in some cases will notify you of a 72-hour deadline to raise your bid above the high bidder’s bid. If you fail to act or respond, L.H. Selman Ltd., at its sole discretion reserves the right to cancel your bids and award lots to other bidders.

Bidding Process

Your bid is a contract to purchase the lot at the hammer price, plus commission. Each bidder must be high bidder on at least one lot at all times during the auction. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second highest bidder. Bidding will continue until all under bidders have indicated that they no longer wish to bid, the high bidder will win the lot if their bid exceeds the reserve price (see Reserves). Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed and the winner determined. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the high bidder. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us of which lots you wish to drop. L.H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to settle any disputes, determine bids, terminate accounts, remove and edit content, determine winners or cancel auctions at their sole discretion.

Bids must be made in the following increments:

Up to $200: $10

$200 to $500: $25

$500 to $1,000: $50

$1,000 to $2,000: $100

Reserves

$2,000 to $5,000: $250

$5,000 to $10,000: $500

$10,000 and over: $1,000

Condition

We suggest that bidders obtain a detailed condition report for any lots where there are any questions or concerns. Unless otherwise noted as follows, all lots are in pristine condition:

Excellent condition: Insignificant surface wear

Fine condition: Minor surface wear or damage below the sightline

Good condition: Visible but tolerable surface wear

Fair condition: Visible surface wear that obstructs the design

Internal flaws, including annealing cracks, will be mentioned separately.

Payment

Successful bidders will be invoiced at the auction’s close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay, in U.S. dollars, the full amount of the hammer price, the Buyer’s Premium calculated on the hammer price, all shipping fees and all applicable taxes. Payment is due upon receipt of the invoice and a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged after 15 days. Split payments and payment plans are not accepted without prior approval, at the sole discretion L.H. Selman Ltd. The full Buyer’s Premium of 23% will be applied to Visa, Mastercard and Discover credit card and debit card payments. The discounted Buyer’s Premium of 20% will be applied to cash, check, Zelle QuickPay and bank wire transfer payments. No other forms of payment are accepted. All checks must be drawn from a U.S. bank and mailed to PO Box 1732, North Riverside, IL 60546. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until full payment is received.

Shipping

Orders are shipped using USPS Priority Mail, with Signature Confirmation required for delivery, once full payment is received. Alternate shipping methods are available and will be billed at cost, if requested by the buyer. Tracking information will be provided. Domestic items are shipped at a charge of $15 for the first paperweight and $5 for each additional paperweight in the same shipment. For shipments to Canada, the cost will be $35 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. For shipments to other international destinations, the cost will be $50 plus $5 for each additional paperweight. Price of shipping and insurance for over-sized items will vary according to size and weight. Buyers are responsible for providing a correct shipping address to L.H. Selman Ltd. and assume responsibility for undeliverable packages. Buyers are responsible for any additional fees required to take possession of the package.

Return Policy

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot generally will not be sold. In some cases, L.H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a bid below the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L.H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the consignor has the right to recover consigned lots that do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L.H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel that a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L.H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

Guarantee

All lots are sold on an “as is” basis. L.H. Selman Ltd. makes every effort to describe each lot with complete accuracy and accepts responsibility for the authenticity of the items offered for auction.
