Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects

1. Extremely rare and important antique New England Glass Company fancy-cut double overlay encased nosegay and millefiori garlands paper weight. The piece contains a central nosegay, with three cane flowers, green leaves, and a stem, resting on a double-swirl white latticinio cushion, encircled by three concentric rings of complex canes, in white, pink, and blue. The exterior is finished with a pale blue-over-translucent green double overlay, which has a circular top facet and elaborate crisscross cuts on the sides. “Considered to be one of the finest American weights in existence.” -A nnual Bulletin o f the Paperweight Collectors Association, 1989 (cover piece). Provenance: The Collection of Dorothea Yeager. Diameter 3 1/8". $23,000-33,000

2. Extremely rare antique Baccarat dated magnum scattered millefiori on lace paperweight. This unusually large piece contains a “B 1847” signature/ date cane, along with an assortment of colorful, scat tered, complex millefiori, including the Gridel silhou ettes of two butterflies, two horses, two roosters, two dogs, an elephant, a goat, a pheasant, a black monkey, and a red devil. The ground is composed of tumbled white lace, with scattered pieces of colored filigree and segments of canes. Accession number 48, from the Challenging Tradition traveling paperweight exhibit (1993-4), painted in white enamel. “This enormous weight, dated to indicate it was one of the first Gridel weights produced, is a masterful demonstration of these canes which spark the imagination.” -T h e Art o f the Paperweight —Challenging Tradition. (See also The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , pp. 54-55; Glass Paperweights in The Art Institute o f Chicago, p. 36) Minor surface wear. Diameter 4". $15,000-25,000

3. Very rare antique Baccarat dated magnum close packed millefiori paperweight, with a multitude of assorted complex canes, including two Gridel pigeon silhouettes and a “B 1847” signature/date cane. “‘Close’ millefiori refers to the close vertical packing together of the canes, like people in a dense crowd. The patchwork quilt of one hundred or one hundred and fifty canes in a close millefiori paperweight offers a sampling of many or most of the canes made by a factory, and treats the eye to an almost endless variety.” -Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society. (See The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights, pp. 53-54) A ring of diamond-cutting encircles the perimeter of the base. Diameter 3 7/8". $20,000-30,000 4. Rare antique Clichy lampwork and split-millefiori flower bouquet paperweight. The unusual five-flower bouquet contains three split-mille fiori flowers, composed of pieces of canes which have been cut lengthwise; one in pale pink, one in pink and green, and one in pale lavender and green. The arrangement is completed by two blue lampwork blossoms, several green leaves, and stems, over clear ground. Three of the flowers are open-faced, and have an upright complex cane center, while the remaining two flowers are presented sideways. Provenance: The Sinclair Collection, New Hampshire. Exhibitions include Corning, New York, The Corning Museum of Glass, Paperweights: “Flowers Which Clothe The Meadows”, 1978. (See p. 72, catalog #140, described p. 142. See also One Hundred o f the Most Important Paperweights, pp. 96-97, plate 41) Diameter 3". $45,000-60,000 5. Rare antique Clichy concentric millefiori piedouche paperweight, with both pink and white roses. The finely crafted design contains a Clichy-trademark pink and green rose, centered among six concentric rings of assorted complex canes, in burgundy, cobalt blue, green, pink and white. One ring is comprised of five red-centered white roses, which alternate with blue millefiori, while another contains eleven pink and green roses, alternating with complex white star canes. The piece is finished with a turquoise and white stave basket, which is drawn down to a clear footed base. “For precision and color harmony the finer concentrics are unsur passed- one looks down upon a formal garden bordered by vertical staves

in alternating colors, a garden of pink with blue and lavender, eggplant pur ple against mid-summer green, aquamarine against wine red, all centered, perhaps, about a big Clichy rose.” —The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. “The piedouche was another innovative variation of the paperweight format. The artisans accentuated the grandeur of the millefiori by literally placing it on a pedestal. These pieces are also known as basket weights, because they conjure poetic images of a bright basket filled with ‘a thousand flowers.’ All of the major French factories produced pedestal weights, but Clichy excelled in this area.” —The Art o f the PaperweightChallenging Tradition. Minor surface wear. Height 2 3/8", diameter 2 15/16". $45,000-60,000

7. Very rare Baccarat two-flower bouquet paperweight, containing a double clematis and a smaller single clematis, green leaves, and a long stem, over clear star-cut ground. The larger flower is composed of two tiers of red-striped white petals, around a large stardust/ six-point star complex cane center, and is crowned by four rounded green leaves. The smaller companion flower has five, red-striped, white petals, a stardust/bull’s-eye cane center, and a single attached green leaf. The white petals are translucent, possibly, opaline glass, giving them a pearlescent tint. The backsides of the flowers have dark blue stripes, which could imbue a touch of blue to the whites of the petals as well. “...such flowers as... 53 with its budding blossom... would be hard to beat.” -Paul Hollister. (See Paperweights: “Flowers Which Clothe The M eadows ”, pp. 59, 130) Diameter 3 1/8". $6000-10,000

The mushroom is composed of assort ed close packed complex millefiori, including seven rose canes, two of pink and green, two of white and green, and three of white and pink, all gathered in a white stave basket. The lower ends of the basket extend down to form a short stem over a clear diamond-cut ground. Blue-over-white double overlay with five and one facets. “The finest canes in subtle, color-row juxtapositions, including Clichy roses in various colors and shades, are neatly arranged, and the view of them through the top window is breathtaking.” -T h e Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. 8. Rare antique Clichy C-scroll millefiori garlands on blue color ground paperweight, with both pink and white roses. The wellcentered design contains six C-shaped rows of complex canes, which encircle a central arrangement of concentric millefiori, in pink, white, green, and lavender, set dramatically on an opaque brilliant blue ground. Two of the C-shaped garlands are composed entirely of rose canes, one with twelve red-centered white roses, and one with eleven pink and green roses. (See The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 134) Diameter 3 1/4". $11,000-15,000

9. Extremely rare antique Clichy scattered millefiori on moss ground paperweight. The piece is composed of assorted bright com plex canes, including a very large central pink and green rose, and a pink rose at the outer edge, on green moss ground, with scattered tiny white florets. “Clichy utilized its moss ground... to create the illusion of vibrant wildflowers on a green lawn. It is an extraordinary example of the fac tory’s color vocabulary...” -T h e Art o f the Paperweight—Challenging Tradition. “The most sought after, and undoubtedly the most striking, spaced millefiori are the moss green carpet grounds. The prize posses sions of a few advanced collectors, these weights feature a ground of many small green canes contrasting jubilantly with the colorful spaced florets.” — Paperweights fo r Collectors. (See also Annual Bulletin o f the Paperweight Collectors’ Association (1968), pp. 28, 46) Small bruises and a fine annealing crack around the base. Diameter 3 1/8". $12,000-13,000 10. Antique Baccarat butterfly and white flower paperweight. The butterfly, with multi-colored millefiori wings, attached to a mauve latticinio body, hovers above a double-tiered white flower, with a com plex cane center, a white bud, light green leaves, and stem, on clear star-cut ground. “The body of the butterfly is nothing but the gauze cable from the mushroom torsade; the perfunctory wings—only the overlap suggests a butterfly’s wings- are nothing more than a simple millefiori cane sliced thin and introduced to a tortoise-shell bed of fused colored chips; the antennae are threads with which to stripe a pansy; only the concave oval eyes seem to have been created especially for the butterfly. It is an ingenious use of spare parts...”

—The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 2 13/16".
