Part I: A ntique Paperweights and R elated Objects 1 Extremely rare magnum antique New England Glass Company bouquet on latticinio faceted paperweight. An arrangement of dimensional flowers, with two multi-tiered clematis flowers, one blue and one pink, framed by four single clematis flowers, in pink, white, yellow and mauve, is crowned by a large cobalt blue bud. Numerous finely-variegated green leaves fill the bouquet gathered together by the stems, tied with a narrow yellow ribbon. Fine, white double-swirl latticinio ground. All-over geometric faceting in four rings and one top facet. “These superb three-dimensional beauties rank among the best of all paperweights produced by the New England Glass Company, and, in fact, the best produced by any glassworks. They made very few of these…no duplicates exist. Their quality is such that they probably served as presentation pieces given to important personages.” —The Art of the Paperweight-The Boston & Sandwich and New England Glass Companies. Featured in a special exhibit at the Bergstrom Mahler Museum in 2014-2016. Pictured in the April 2015 PCA newsletter. Minor surface wear. Diameter 3 11/16" $15,000—20,000

2 Rare antique Baccarat aqua honeycomb paneled millefiori carpet ground paperweight. A red, white and blue arrowhead cane centers three concentric rings of complex canes, one of blue star-centered red bull’s-eye rings, another of more arrowhead canes and the outer one of white cogs centered by seven alternating white and red stars, to create the center of a flower-shaped design, with each of six radiating petals garlanded by white cogs with seven central blue stars, of alternating red or blue complex canes like the ones from the center of the flower. The design is set into a sea of aqua honeycomb canes that flow to the base. A multicolored filigree cushion peers through the base. Paul Hollister, in The Encyclopedia of Glass Paperweights, compared the detailed grounds of these weights to needlepoint. Diameter 3 1/8" $10,000—14,000 2

26 Fine antique Baccarat mottled green snake on white upset muslin paperweight. A light green snake, with dark green markings and red eyes, coils on a cushion of white upset muslin. “Baccarat artisans merged two images of elegance with this portrayal of a snake on a lace cushion. One wonders what story lies behind its construction. The lace causes one to think that the piece belonged to a woman, or that it was meant to characterize a woman. Femme fatale - the idea of the female being alluring, yet possessing a painful bite, was a popular image in art and poetry at the time. Or, perhaps this is a representation of the serpent who tempted Eve. The entire presentation is masterfully put together.” —The Art of the Paperweight - Challenging Tradition. From the C. T

he art of making paperweights was secretly transferred across generations through oral tradition but over the decades, war, politics and financial woes hampered the bequest. By request of the famed collector, Paul Jokelson, the Saint Louis factory assigned a small but dedicated team of glass workers to the task of reviving paperweights. As recounted by glassblower, Paul Gossmann: “Finally in 1951, the head of the blowing room chose me for a thrilling assignment: trying to duplicate the antique paperweights of the 19th century. I was 18 and a long period of research along with trials and errors lay ahead of me. With the help of Louis Lutz, my first canes were produced and, after several weeks, the first paperweights emerged…I fashioned the first flowers with a blowtorch, very simple flowers, dahlias. At the end of the second year, in 1953, we started overlays, then paperweights of the Queen of England.” Few paperweights were produced during this revival from 1952-1955. — “The Art of the Paperweight: Saint Louis”. 120 Saint Louis 1950s yellow double clematis paperweight.
