The collectors whose artworks are being offered for sale here are each remarkable individuals. It happens that they led lives of privilege and comfort, but they have also all led lives filled with meaning and accomplishment. When you make a purchase from this historic auction on September 17, 2016, you will be obtaining a paperweight from the collections of the Art Institute of Chicago, the most prestigious museum in the world to showcase the art form. But you will also be receiving a work of art that graced the homes and hearts of thoughtful and discerning individuals who not only found the time in their very full lives to collect and appreciate finely wrought paperweights—but who also heard and answered the call of noblesse oblige, spending their own personal time and considerable resources in the efforts to aid the underprivileged and dispossessed and also to create opportunities for future generations to come. As a collector, you could not be in better company.
The Potter Palmers Pauline Kohlsaat Palmer was born in 1882, and is not to be confused with the Chicago painter and her contemporary, Pauline Palmer. Pauline and her husband Potter Palmer II (born 1875), married in 1908, and were the daughter-in-law and son of what was arguably the premier couple living in the city of Chicago since the end of the Civil War. The senior Potter was the titan who built the grand Palmer House Hotel (twice), developed State Street and initiated the revolutionary business model that redefined retail establishments forever. His wife, Bertha, was a legendary beauty and leader in societal circles who also had an impeccable business sense. She reigned over the 1892 Chicago World’s Fair. She singlehandedly began collecting the then revolutionary Impressionist paintings whose later donation would help propel the fledgling Art Institute of Chicago to world class status. Bertha was also always active in a large number of charitable undertakings. Potter II became the director of the First National Bank of Chicago as well as the President of the Art Institute of Chicago (1925-1943). Pauline came to the Palmers also “pedigreed,” being the daughter of a major Chicago newspaper owner and editor and leader in Illinois Republican politics. Pauline and her new spouse followed in the family tradition of art collecting, although she and her husband “Min” as the younger Palmer was known, preferred smaller scale acquisitions — they were sensitive and
serious collectors who loved drawings, prints and decorative art objects, especially paperweights. Pauline would choose weights not only for herself but she would also select examples to buy with the Art Institute in mind. Pauline also followed in the family tradition of largesse, as is evidenced by the fact that The Children’s Home & Aid Society of Illinois gives the Pauline K. Palmer award for exceptional commitment and service to families. In September of 1942, the Palmers opened their legendary Palmer mansion to the American Red Cross, which then created a much-needed wartime training facility for surgical dressings. Pauline was the president of the Antiquarian Society from 1919-1927 and again from 1931-1934, making numerous gifts to the AIC. From 1941 up to her passing in 1956, Pauline donated money and art, including many prints, textiles and decorative art objects. Although she enjoyed her efforts, she preferred not to be in charge. In 1925 she confided to her mother that setting up exhibitions or seeking out possible acquisitions was far preferable to her. Potter II died in 1943 and he was given a memorial service in the museum itself. The majority of the Palmer paperweights in this auction were received by the museum in 1931, but the dates range up to 1956. The couple rests in Graceland Cemetery. Photo, Lot 32B
Mrs. Ella Grace Brown Burdick Less is known about Ella Burdick and Lucy K. Kretchmer than about Rubloff and the Palmers. But they too, were of the upper classes; they also enjoyed the benefits of privilege and they also shared the sense of noblesse oblige. Ella was born in 1870 in Peoria County and it is reported that she married Alfred S. Burdick in either 1890 or 1891. At the time of the 1900 census, they were recorded as living in Hinesdale Township in DuPage County. The couple always remained childless. Her husband Alfred was born in Preston New York, in 1867. At some point, the couple moved to Highland Park. In 1921, Alfred Stephen Burdick was named President of the important Abbott Laboratories and he served in that capacity until his death in 1933. Alfred was laid to rest in the wellknown Rosehill Cemetery. Ella herself lived on until November of 1960 and then joined her husband at Rosehill. 4
Nothing is known in detail of Ella’s collecting habits other than knowing she favored paperweights, but there are certainly records of her charitable endeavors. She was 90 at the time of her death and she left an estate valued at over two million dollars. Most of the money was left to charitable, educational and civic organizations. Twenty-six charitable bequests alone amounted to $287,000. Another $437,000 was divided equally between Northwestern University, Salem College in West Virginia, and the Seventh Day Baptist Memorial fund of Plainfield, New Jersey. The Art Institute of Chicago received $10,000. Other monies went to individuals. Also, at the time of Ella’s death, 100 of her paperweights had already been on loan to the museum for several years. As per her wishes, the gift was listed as being the “Mrs. Alfred S. Burdick Collection.” The collection was received into the Art Institute of Chicago in 1961. Photo, Lot 12A

Arthur Rubloff Arthur Rubloff (1902-1986) was known as “The man who changed the face of Chicago.” He arrived here a “skinny kid from Minnesota” and began dealing in real estate, specializing in office rentals. Amazingly, in 1930, the year after the Great Depression began with the sudden crash of the stock market, Rubloff founded the Rubloff Company. Rubloff was a genius at developing real estate projects and his business flourished over the years, reshaping Chicago’s city skyline in the process. He is credited with having developed the north end of the downtown area and is said to have coined the phrase, “The Magnificent Mile.” He headed projects as far away as shopping centers in California, but his major focus was always his adopted hometown, Chicago. Other notable achievements include developing the Evergreen Shopping Center, the Greyhound Bus Station and the Carl Sandburg Village. Rubloff began his love affair with paperweights accidentally. He first purchased a paperweight in 1947 as a gift to his business partner, who had a small collection. Rubloff found himself captivated and began collecting, over the years developing a serious and extensive collection. Like the other art lovers in these profiles, Rubloff was as generous as he was wealthy, and besides donating a world class paperweight collection to the Art Institute, Rubloff also gave the museum 130 bronzes valued in the millions, as well as six million dollars in cash. In addition he bequeathed five
million dollars to the University of Chicago hospital complex and another five million to Northwestern University for a new library. There is a special, recently revamped gallery at the Art Institute dedicated to the permanent display of the Rubloff Collection. The project increased the number of weights on view from 341 to more than 800. This elegantly designed space has been expanded and modernized from the original display and was realized with the assistance of the Paperweight Collectors of America (founded 1953), the L.H. Selman Ltd. Gallery and also the family of Wes Clark. The artist Paul Stankard executed a special commission to help dedicate the opening ceremony. The well over 1200 weights the museum acquired from Rubloff quickly positioned it as having one of the three premier collections in the world. One reason for the high quality of the Rubloff holdings comes from the fact that he regularly engaged the curatorial assistance of the legendary Paul Jokelson, sometimes called “The King of Paperweights.” Jokelson advised him on the desirability of certain weights and also guided the collector as to what pieces filled gaps in his huge collection. Rubloff was reported to have spent thousands of dollars in a matter of minutes on Jokelson’s word. The Art Institute first received weights from the real estate mogul in 1978, with the rest of the works as a bequest after Rubloff’s death at the age of 83 in 1986. Over 200 entries in this auction are from Rubloff’s holdings. Photo, Lot 8A
Lucy B. Kretchmer Lucinda North Barnett and Herman Louis Kretchmer were both born in 1879. They married in 1910. Dr. Kretchmer had been practicing medicine in Chicago since 1904. Lucy and Herman had two sons, Edwin and Herman Jr. Edwin died at the age of 15. Lucy passed away at the age of 63 in 1942. Her husband remarried four years later. Again, little is known of the details of Lucy’s reasons for collecting paperweights and more is known of her generosity to her fellow human beings. It also appears that family members waited a decade before donating Lucy’s weights as the records show the year 1952 as being when they entered the holdings. Besides being a doctor’s wife, Lucy was at one time the President of the Board of Managers of the Episcopalian Home for the Aged. She also served as President of the Nurses’ Alumnae of Passavant Hospital and President of the Episcopal Diocese Altar Guild. She was awarded the Distinguished Service Cross for her efforts in Episcopal Church work by Bishop George C. Stewart. Her service was held at St. Chrysostom’s
L.H. Selman Ltd.
Episcopal Church in Chicago’s Gold Coast area. Lucy’s husband Herman became one of the first clinical professors to tailor his efforts to specialize in urology and he lived to see his chosen specialty develop into a major field of clinical endeavor. Dr. Kretchmer spent his entire life in Chicago, graduating from Northwestern University School of Pharmacy before receiving his Doctor of Medicine degree from Northwestern University Medical School. A newsletter extract published by Northwestern’s Feinberg School of Medicine describes Kretchmer as a “distinguished physician, medical researcher, author and philanthropist.” He died in 1951, but not before he left a will that included a generous provision to establish the “Lucy and Edwin Kretchmer Fund of Northwestern University Medical School for special studies and investigations in the field of urology.” There are 24 weights in the auction from Lucy’s collection. L.H. Selman Ltd. on Behalf of The Art Institute of Chicago Presents a Historic Opportunity Paperweights, or simply weights as collectors refer to them, are magical things. They exude grace – permanent soap bubbles imbued with delicate and intriguing elements floating within a cushion of molten crystal and coaxed while cooling, into assuming a multitude of pleasing geometries. These creations represent the nexus of exquisite design and dedicated execution. Each paperweight is unique and provides a gleaming playground for light, offering shifting, variegated interior vistas with every turn of the hand or angle of the sun.
The finest examples were originally created in the great glass ovens of mid-19th century France and many found their way into American collections. This catalogue is host to a large number of such art works. It is our hope that you will find examples of what the dedicated paperweight collector Truman Capote described as “some fragment of a dream” that you claim for your own collection and which will bring you pleasure for years to come.

A Brief Background Some might consider the paperweight to be a simple desk accessory. Historically, many have been locked away in the treasure vaults of kings and collected by some of the world’s most famous personalities. The origin of glass paperweights can be traced to France, around 1845, when glass factories such as Baccarat, Saint Louis, and Clichy were competing to create the finest crystal luxury items. Water sets, tableware, and desk accessories such as inkwells, led to the creation of presse-papiers. These relatively affordable objets d‘art were originally developed as elegant gifts and exhibited to great acclaim in London’s Great Exhibition of 1851. After such success, the glasswork factories competed to outdo each other, creating intricate designs set in grand presentation pieces which are highly sought after in today’s market. The original French glass paperweight sensation lasted about 25 years after which the art form fell out of vogue and the intricate process for creating them was eventually lost to subsequent generations of artists and artisans. In the 1950s not long after the Second World War, Paul Jokelson, an enthusiastic collector of antique weights, convinced the factories in his native France to re-invent the technique. The result has been a renaissance of the most difficult of all glass art forms – the contemporary glass paperweight, which in many instances exceeds the brilliance and complexity of its predecessors. Glass paperweights can now be found in museum collections around the world, including the Corning Museum of Glass, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum. L.H. Selman Ltd.
In the mid-1960s, Lawrence Selman, with a PhD in organic chemistry from Yale and mastery of the viola da gamba, was introduced to paperweights through a fellow musician who collected them. Selman bought some pieces as gifts for his friends, and slowly became involved in trading paperweights. It wasn’t long before the small works of art became more than a passing fancy for him, as he found himself traveling across the country to purchase and sell them. Eventually, Selman left behind his career as a professor of chemistry, and started L.H. Selman Ltd. as a small mail order business. Recognizing a void in information available to the paperweight-collecting community, Selman decided to create a publishing company through which he could distribute his own knowledge of paperweights for the benefit of collectors, new and established. His first effort was Paperweights for Collectors. The book proved indispensable, and many others followed. Selman also founded the International Paperweight Society. In 2001, Selman was awarded the honor of being named one of the Top Ten People of the 20th Century to influence the paperweight art form by the Paperweight Collectors Association. In 2009 Lawrence Selman and his wife Marti, sold their business to Mitch and Ben Clark, two brothers who have been immersed in the wondrous world of paperweights since their youth.
