Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects “I attribute (paperweights) holding powers to the fertile imaginations o f their makers—makers who have mastered a demanding technology and demonstrated an elegant sense o f design. Fortunately, we live in a time when these virtues are no less abundant... although it sometimes takes considerable effort to fin d the evidence. ” — Dwight P. Lanmon

The Art o f the Paperweight • 1. Very rare antique Clichy magnum chequer paper weight, with two pink roses. Unusual for its proportions, its variety of canes, including an auburn-cloaked cog cane next to a sky-blue pastry mold, and for the abundance of good, clean filigree. “However, usually, the very large florets, including fine Clichy roses in various colors, stand out rich and bold against the white filigree, the ground’s opacity reinforced by parallel fil igree rods placed beneath it.” — The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. See Antique French Paperweights, p. 114; The Art o f the Paperweight , p. 85; Classic French Paperweights, p. 51; A Collectors Guide to Paperweights, p. 49; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights, pp. 128-130; Glass Paperweights o f the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, plate 25, ill. 1181; Paperweights fo r Collectors, p. 57. Diameter 4 5/16". $12,000-15,000 — Provenance: Sold by Sothebys 12/18/89, Lot 132, Spink and

• 2. Very rare antique Baccarat dated magnum close packed millefiori paperweight. Brightly colored canes, including sil houettes of an elephant, monkey, bird, shamrocks, goat, flower, rooster, horse, and two dogs. A blanket of wildly different canes, compels the eye to try and identify each and every one. “‘Close’ millefiori refers to the close vertical packing together of the canes, like people in a dense crowd. The patchwork quilt of one hundred or one hundred and fifty canes in a close millefiori paperweight offers a sampling of many or most of the canes made by a factory, and treats the eye to an almost endless vari ety.” — Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society. See The Art o f the Paperweight, p. 80; Collectors Paperweights Price Guide and Catalogue (1983), p. 81; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights, pp. 53-54. “B1847” signature and date cane; on diamond-cut base with applied paper labels. Diameter 4". $14,000-18,000

flowers. There is a gestural quality to the ribbon-like petals, and the three-dimensional aspect of this antique can even be appre ciated when looking at the work underneath. Diameter 3 1/8". $14,000-16,000 — Provenance: Featured in Sotheby’s New York Sale, 7123,

4/29/98, Lot 230, from a Private Collection • 4. Rare antique Baccarat butterfly and wheatflower paperweight. The marbling on the butterfly’s wings is rich, its velvety, deep-purple body is well proportioned, and the anten nae are sensitively realized. It hovers just off-center from a splendid white wheatflower, with periwinkle dots on its fur rowed petals, and evenly matched, fanning leaves. Both objects live in harmony under the glass, in this collectible antique. Star-cut base. Diameter 3". $6000-8000 — Provenance: Featured in Sotheby’s New York, Sale 7123,

4/29/98, Lot 45, from a Private Collection

• 3. Rare antique Clichy clematis bouquet paperweight, with overlapping, ribbed flowers in amethyst, pink-hued and salmon-pink to crimson shaded blossoms. Tight green sepals, wrap the companion buds, and copious leaves fill out the body, while a demure pink ribbon bundles the group. Clichy made far fewer bouquets than their competitors, and so this rare design is considered more valuable than the popular “candy” weights. This exceptional design makes the most of blending millefiori (the stamen), crimped glass (the leaves), and lampwork (the pleated petals) in a plush, fulsome arrangement of

5. Unusual antique, possibly Pantin, green strawberries paperweight, on clear ground. Pantin is associated with lampwork flowers, fruits and reptiles with wonderful dimensionali ty seen in few other antique weights. The berries show realistic dimpling and proportions, and the trio of green crimped leaves are gathered around a separated stem. Strawberries of this late 19th-c. era were known for their sourness, so the bright green hue we think of now as under ripe was likely common to palates then. The Pantin attribution is not as well substantiat ed as other French factories, partially because this glass house produced so few weights. Diameter 2 11/16". $3500-5000

Spring 2002

• 6. Antique Baccarat bouquet paperweight, with a dazzling and rare floral group composed of a large, central, double clematis, surrounded by two Type-II pansies, a bud, and an opening rose bud of deep red petals. Baccarat distinguishes itself by using millefiori as details for the flowers’ stamen, but this composition is finer still for its exquisite and sensitive lampwork; plush pansy petals like wine-filled balloons, the rose and its clingy sepals a study of breathless, budding anticipation, and the broad pleated face of the clematis a center of energy, like a white flame. Star-cut base. Diameter 3 1/2". $13,000-15,000 • 7. Antique Clichy concentric millefiori piedouche paper weight, with seven rows of assorted complex millefiori, a row of fifteen pink and green roses, a row of ten white roses, and a large pink and green rose in the center, within a basket of turquoise and white staves. A similar base is seen on a Clichy weight pictured in Evangeline Bergstrom’s, Old Glass Paperweights, ill. 31, p. 48. Height 2 3/16"; Diameter 2 5/8". $8000-11,000 — Provenance: Sothebys New York, Sale 6512 on 12/6 and 8/93,

Lot 105 • 8. Very rare antique dated Baccarat scattered millefiori in blue carpet ground paperweight. The Gridels stand out like bits of cruise ship party favors drifting on an ocean’s white-caps. The numerous silhouette canes include a dog, butterfly or moth, goat, bird (framed within two shamrocks), deer, squirrel, mon key, rooster, and pelican. But the detail in the complex canes themselves exhibit that unerring confidence Baccarat artisans had in their invention and taste. “...(T )he carpetgrounds most prized by connoisseurs are the tightly packed miniature canes in

combinations of colors, such as blue and w h ite ...” —

Paperweights and Other Glass Curiosities. “Carpetgrounds, usual ly associated with clustered paperweight designs, are among the most appealing foils for colored and silhouette canes.”— Paperweights, \Flowers which clothe the meadows. ’ Signed/dated B1848, signed upside down. Diameter 2 3/4". $9000-12,000 — Provenance: Sothebys New York Sale, 12/2/97, Lot 124

• 1 0 . Antique Baccarat patterned millefiori shamrock and butterfly paperweight, containing four rows of complex canes around a central claret-colored cog cane. The center design is composed of claret and white millefiori, including a ring of seven green shamrocks framed in opaque white, with an outer circle of cobalt-blue, white and red arrow-head canes, with a spaced garland of single butterfly silhouette canes at the edge, all of it resting on tumbled, white latticinio. The six rarely seen shamrocks are quite large, as are the butterfly or “moth” canes around the perimeter. “These are weights of power and impact, whose design must have taken considerable thought.” — The

Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3".

9. Rare antique Baccarat dated red carpet ground paper weight. Every Gridel cane is an excellent example of Baccarat’s menagerie, including the horse, cockerel, stag, monkey, ele phant and the moth (or butterfly). A fine white bird with shamrocks, and a complex whorl and hollow stave cane design, indicate the intense work that went into these compositions. “The carpet ground is the most sophisticated version of millefiori glass.” — Paperweights. PCA Bulletin (1980), p. 28; PCA Bulletin (1979), p. 27; One H undred o f the Most Important Paperweights, p. 54; Paperweights: Flowers which clothe the meadows ,’ p. 32. Signed and dated “B1848” in blue and red lettering. Diameter 2 15/16". $13,000-18,000

• 1 1 . Rare antique Saint Louis all-over faceted mushroom paperweight, with white and blue floret canes at center, sur rounded by four rings of canes pulled down to a solid, rare, lime-green stem. The rather homely-named mushroom belies that these designs were among the most architectural of the concentric millefiori arrangements. The tuft is in tight forma tion, with well-matched complex canes, appearing like a fresh bouquet, with the outer rings all pulled down to a fine stempoint. This presentation is delightful, not only for its citroncolored ring of stave canes (with a delicate flower pattern inside, placed throughout the bouquet), but the all-over printies have one’s eye darting all about the surface. Diameter 3". $4000-5000

Spring 2002

12. Antique Bohemian overlay spaced concentric complex millefiori paperweight, in red, blue, green and white, on a cushion of white upset muslin with bits of blue and red filigree; red-over-white double overlay with all over circular facets. Diameter 2 7/8". $6000-8000 • 1 3 . Antique Baccarat carpet panel paperweight, made of complex canes in star, cog, and arrowhead designs. The shape resembles the outline of a flower, comprised of bundles of aqua tubes sheathed in white, the dense carpeting masks bits of brightly colored twists and filigree, that one can see through the bottom of the weight. Diameter 2 1/2". $7000-12,000 • 14. Antique Saint Louis dated concentric millefiori paperweight, with a white silhouette of a camel in the center. This response to Baccarat’s Gridel canes is, to quote Hollister, “a hyper-lumpy, rubber-kneed camel,” yet was surely appealing to clients who romanticized adventurers in the Far East and their fantastic creatures. Eighteen canes in an outer ring con tain the tiny silhouette of a dancing couple. In the magical world of glass, what may have began as a molded cane as large as the weight itself, has been pulled down so the lilliputian figures take up less than a millimeter. Signed and dated aSL1848”. “In the late 1930’s two Chicago friends, Mr. W. Russell Button and Mr. Alvin E. Bastian, acquired the former collection of the celebrated Mr. Oscar Wilde. Both of these gentlemen had stated that paperweights presented here were once segments of this notable selection.” — Fred Nagel, “Remembering,” Annual Bulletin o f the Paperweight Collectors Association (1970). See Annual Bulletin o f the PCA (1970), fig. 7, p. 29. Diameter 3 1/8M. $6000-8000 — Provenance: Collection o f Oscar Wilde. Spring 2002

16. Rare antique Baccarat dated scattered Gridel canes on upset muslin paperweight. Gridel canes, including the faith ful dog, horse, goat, stag and cockerel make an appearance; as well as a ghostly white squirrel silhouette, cooing lovebirds, moth, and a white monkey cane facing off with a man with a staff. The canes are all bedded in lovely, clean tufts of latticinio, with some colored filigree here and there. Signed and dated “B1848”. Diameter 2 13/16". $3000-4000 17. Very rare antique Baccarat dated scattered millefiori on lace paperweight, with a central shamrock cane. A superior example of the craft, the cane designs offer very bold, complex millefiori faces, and they are all presented meticulously over the drifts of latticinio. This weight and its distinctive millefiori, may represent an influx of glass workers from Eastern Europe, bringing their sensibilities to the French factories. This design is notable for the absence of silhouette canes and the “1849” red date cane. See The Art o f the Paperweight , pp. 72-73; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 33; Glass Paperweights o f the Bergstrom-Mahler Museum, plate 15, ill. 406. Diameter 2 7/8". $3000-4250 • 1 5 . Antique Baccarat dated scattered millefiori and sil houette cane paperweight, with nine silhouettes over lace. Part barnyard, part safari, this Baccarat menagerie sports two roosters, horse, goat, butterfly, grouse, shamrocks, stag, mon key, elephant and a lovely picture cane in the center of a pansy shaped flower. The tumbled lace includes streamers of color (the yellows and other warm colors come off very well). See The Art o f the Paperweight , pp. 72-73; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 53; Glass Paperweights o f the Bergstro m -Mahler Museum., plate 15, ill. 406. Signed and dated “B1848”. 18. Antique Baccarat dated scattered Gridel canes on upset muslin paperweight. The usual silhouette suspects are on dis play: horse, squirrel, dog, stag, moth, cockerel and goat, as well as some avians with wildly different personalities—from a plucky white bird, a downcast duck (or goose), to an ethereal swan. The remaining complex millefiori all nestle in a tight cushion of lacey segments, with a few streamers of color throughout. Faceted. Signed and dated “B1848”. Diameter 3 1/16". $2500-3500 • 1 9 . Antique Baccarat dated close packed millefiori paper weight. Gridel silhouettes of a rooster, pheasant, dog, horse, stag, and lovebirds; picture canes of flowers, whorls (choufleur), shamrock, honeycomb, and five abstracted roses, with the fortress-style cane at center, and four, green, leaf-shaped sepals set in white. A splendid showcase for some of Baccarat’s most colorful and complex millefiori work. Signed and dated “B1848”. Diameter 2 13/16". $3500-4000 20. Antique Baccarat dated close packed complex mille fiori paperweight, on upset muslin. Signed and dated “B1847”. Diameter 2 7/8". $2500-3500 21. Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori mushroom paperweight, the tuft plush with arrow, star, stardust, honey

comb, cog, trefoil and whorl canes. There can even be found three flower picture canes; one on the top, and two along the mushroom’s stem. The stem extends to a star-cut ground inside a spiraling blue and white lace filigree torsade. See The Art o f the Paperweight , p. 88; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , pp. 56-59. Diameter 3 1/16". $2000-2500 • 22. Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori mushroom paperweight, with blue and white torsade. The plume of canes is splendid, replete with pastel choufleur , clusters of crosses and stars, and one with leaf-shaped canes, suggesting an abstract rose. There are a great many cane designs visible under the mushroom top, which may not have been intended, but then again offer the collector more to enjoy on all sides. Diameter 2 13/16". $1500-2000 • 23. Antique Baccarat garlanded large butterfly paper weight, with star-cut base. Evoking the ethereal, and the sym bolic lightness of being, the essential French butterfly adds a certain gravity to that era’s paperweights. Diameter 2 7/8". $2500-3500 — Exhibited: Collection o f the Corning Museum o f Glass

• 24. Antique Saint Louis snake on jasper ground paper weight, featuring a coiled green snake with enormous paleblue eyes, on an unusual red and white jasper ground. Snake and other reptilians under glass, were popular motifs during this Classic era; examples can be attributed to Saint Louis, Baccarat and Pantin. Painted with accession number #1965464. Diameter 2 3/4". $4250-6000 — Provenance: The Sinclair Collection , New Hampshire; Sothebys

Sale 6656, Important Paperweights: The Property o f the NewYork Historical Society, Lot 157 25. Very rare antique Saint Louis double fuchsia paper weight, with two slender blossoms in crimson and Persian blue. The flowers hang on green stems from a mauve branch, with two furled buds at the top, and three emerald leaves with an aventurine sheen. The arrangement sits on a white double swirl latticinio ground. It is unusual to find a fuchsia weight with two blossoms. Diameter 2 3/4". $3000-4500 • 26. Antique Baccarat wallflower and garland paper weight. The edges of the petals are banded in a deep, carmine red, and fold under, creating a multi-layered effect. The stamen features a row of arrows circling a star cane, and a tight bud

takes the place of one of the typical five leaves crowning the blossom. W ith a garland of alternating stardust/bull’s-eye and complex star canes, the piece is refined further by a star-cut base. Diameter 2 5/8". $4000-5000 • 27. Antique Baccarat faceted woodsman and dog sulphide paperweight, over translucent cranberry background. The detailed sulphide, which presents the great wolfhound in state ly, heroic profile, was part of a series of “hunting” images, over different grounds, and with elaborate cutting. Slight damage along the facets. Diameter 3 1/2". $3500-4500 • 28. Antique Baccarat faceted sulphide paperweight. The meditative figure of Joan of Arc is framed with graceful arcs of noble laurel leaves, and sturdy oak leaves and acorns. A green flash ground helps to quiet the mind. Perhaps Baccarat was playing to the sentiment of a French heart, counting on the stalwart visionary’s popularity to entice clients to buy their glass. Diameter 3 7/16". $3500-4500 • 29. Antique Baccarat interlaced trefoil garlands on a green flash ground paperweight. With its two different types of “whorl” canes, the Clichy-type tube of concentric rings, as well as the scroll-type known to be of Baccarat manufacture,

perhaps this work represents a crossover between the two fac tories. See Identifying Antique Paperweights: M ille f o r i , p. 14. Diameter 3". $1700-2500 • 30. Antique Baccarat Légion D ’Honneur paperweight, with replica of the French Legion o f Honor medal in colored enamels on gold-foil. Established by Napoleon Bonaparte, for military and civil service, the Légion D H onneur is currently France’s premier order. Inscribed, “Bonaparte 1 consul 10 Mai 1802.” Diameter 2 5/8". $1000-1500 — Provenance: M aurice Lindon Coll. Part 1, Sotheby and Co.

London, 2 6 Feb. 1957, Lot 71; Christie’s N. Y. Sale 8728, 9/24/97, The Henry Stern Collection o f Antique Glass Paperweights, Lot 17 • 31. Antique Baccarat looped millefiori garland paper weight. The clear ground shows off the Baccarat canes like per fectly behaved doilies, and one can easily identify the arrow head motif in the center cluster. The pattern is linked in a reverse number 6 arrangement, to resemble a continuous loop. With its spare elegance, it is still worthy of a “letter-weight” connoisseur. Diameter 2 7/8". $650-1000

32. Antique Baccarat scramble paperweight, with a red and white bull’s-eye cane among segments of latticinio and filigree, in blue, red, green, yellow, coral and white. Diameter 3 1/8". $700-1000 33. Antique Baccarat purple and yellow pansy paperweight, with a purple and yellow bud, green leaves and stems, over clear ground. Diameter 2 3/8". $600-800 34. Antique Baccarat miniature white clematis paper weight, with two buds and five green leaves, on a star-cut base. Diameter 1 7/8". $1200-1600 • 35. Antique Baccarat sand dune paperweight, resembling termite mounds, with green mica specks. The premise that Baccarat created these “rock grounds” as proofs, seems logical. A French cristallerie with a royal reputation could hardly find this design compelling enough to call finished, yet it most like ly came from the apprentice glassblowers’ hands, created to present as evidence of growing skills. Diameter 3 3/16". $200-400

switch from subsistence farming to specialized skills: people had free time to dance. Includes a prominent “SL” signature cane. Diameter 2 15/16". $4000-5500 — Provenance: Collection o f Dorothy Yaeger • 37. Antique Baccarat translucent single overlay with millefiori garland paperweight. A deep, emerald green over lay with seven circlets set over a star-cut base. The faceting recalls the circlets design, and finishes with vertical flutes along the bottom. This is a very sophisticated design, showcasing the skills of the entire production line at Baccarat. “For precision of design these are among the finest paperweights...” — The

Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 2 7/8".

• 36. Antique Saint Louis signed concentric millefiori paperweight, with a centrai dancing woman silhouette cane, surrounded by five rings of large canes. An interesting mix of bold, graphic canes, such as the outer ring of bull’s-eye canes, and the more complex ring featuring bundles of elaborate broad cross and hollow cog canes, surrounding elaborate crimped white flower shapes with red centers. The central silhouette cane illus trates an interesting effect of the Industrial Revolution and the

38. Antique Saint Louis pansy and white flower paper weight, over a diamond-cut ground. The leaves and flower stems come together in a bit of a twist, which is associated with Saint Louis floral lampwork (seen in nosegays, especially). This very duo may have been worn on the lapels and shawls of sup porters of Napoleon—a quiet floral statement of solidarity with the deposed Emperor. Because of all the Napoleonic inter est in violets, France became a leader in developing and culti vating new varieties of violets and pansies. “Pansy” in fact comes from the French, pensee, meaning “thought” or “senti ment.’’Diameter 2 15/16". $3500-5000 • 39. Antique Saint Louis looped millefiori garlands paper weight, with a propeller-shaped design of complex canes in alter-

nating loops of white and salmon, set on a turquoise blue ground. Saint Louis produced these to compete with the popular Clichy swirl weight, and ought to get high marks in creating the illusion of movement under glass. The garlands’ canes are well-placed, seeming to grow larger as they reach out to the edge of the dome. See The Art o f the Paperweight , p. 84; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 90; Paperweights fo r Collectors, p. 57. Diameter 3". $4500-6000

with a broad ribbon of cobalt blue, wrapping filaments of white glass. The air rings were created as the glassblower placed the tor sade. The light refracts inside these hollow spaces, imitating bright, liquid mercury. This is also the phenomenon with incrusted sulphides, and further contributes to the mystique of these crystal domes. Pieces of cullet inside, and minor chips and scratches around the facets. Diameter 3 1/4". $2250-3000

40. Antique Saint Louis pink pelargonium paperweight, with pale green leaves and stem, on double-swirl white latticinio. Diameter 2 5/8". $3250-4000

— Exhibited: Collection o f the Corning Museum o f Glass

41. Antique Saint Louis blue double clematis paperweight, the flower, with ridged petals around a yellow and ruby stave cane center, on a stem with five crimped green leaves, all over a white double-swirl latticinio ground. W ith oval printies all around the side. See The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , p. 104; Glass Paperweights in the Art Institute o f Chicago , p. 60. Cullet under the dome and in the ground. Diameter 3 1/16". $900-1500 • 42. Antique Saint Louis faceted upright bouquet paper weight, with two air rings. Wreathing the dimensional bouquet (looking as if it were drawn out of a magic top-hat) is a torsade

43. Antique Saint Louis handcooler, with upright multi-col ored bouquet; all over faceting. “According to tradition, these were originally devised for fair ladies in the days when hand-kiss ing was in fashion. The lady simply held the glass in the palm of her hand until the time came for the ceremony, whereupon the gallant was pleasantly surprised to find the hand cool and com fortable to the lips.” — Old Glass Paperweights. Height 2 3/4"; Diameter 2". $2000-3000 44. • 45. Antique Saint Louis camomile, or pom-pon, paper weight, on pink latticinio ground, with small white bud. In flower language, the camomile is said to represent “energy in adversity.” The luminous pom-pon, from which the slender swirls of the latticinio emanate, is truly beautifully made. “Most pompons are virtuoso demonstrations of the seemingly miraculous level of technical ability attained by nineteenth-century glassworkers.” — Paperweights fo r Collectors. See The Art o f the Paperweight, p. 99; The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights, p. 67; Glass Paperweights in the Art Institute o f Chicago , p. 60; Identifying Antique Paperweights: Lampwork, p. 4 and plate 9; Paperweights fo r Collectors, p. 79. Diameter 2 13/16". $1900-2500 • 46. Antique Saint Louis clematis on clear ground paper weight, with two layers of petals featuring delicate, rosy-pink pinstriping. A slight tinge of blue accents the edges and the veins. Well-placed petals surround a large slice of butter yellow rod, representing the stamen. Surrounded by the cristalleries clear glass, the clematis seems to be suspended in time and space, unaffected by any century’s turmoil. It’s finished with a corona of serrated leaf edges, and the stem pulled from below in a curve. Piece of cullet under dome. Diameter 3 3/16". $1700-2500

47. Antique Saint Louis miniature paperweight, with a cobalt blue double clematis, having a yellow matchhead center and green leaves, over clear ground; six and one facets. Diameter 2". $ 1000-1800 48. Antique Saint Louis miniature four-flower nosegay paperweight, with five green leaves and a millefiori garland in red, white and blue canes. Diameter 1 7/16". $900-1200 • 49. Antique Saint Louis faceted flat bouquet paperweight, with a top window and two rows of circular facets. The cutting sets off the good, clear, Saint Louis glass and multiplies the nosegay of “flower” canes. The almond-shaped, emerald leaves exhibit the serrated edges typical of this factory, crowning the tight bouquet, and the stems are pulled down ending in a graceful curve. See The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights , pp. 101-102; Glass Paperweights o f the Bergstrom-Mahler M useum , plate 52, ill. 632; Glass Paperweights in the Art Institute o f Chicago , p. 42. Diameter 2 7/8". $1500-2500 50. Antique Saint Louis upright five-flower bouquet paper weight, with a multi-tiered pink rose, encircled by a white tor sade; clear star-cut ground and all over geometric facets. Diameter 2 3/4". $3000-3750

Spring 2002

• 51. Antique Saint Louis crown paperweight, with twocolor red and green twists, separated by white latticinio twists, comprising twenty spokes drawn down from a complex millefiori of broad cross and floret canes. Made to resemble the crown worn by nobles in coronation, this design is considered to be one of Saint Louis’ best contributions, to this art form. “The precision with which the glassmaker placed the parts of the design togeth er is a phenomenal demonstration of skill.”— The Art o f the Paperweight: Challenging Tradition. Diameter 2 5/8". $ 2 5 0 0 3500 52. Antique Saint Louis crown paperweight composed of red and green twists, alternating with white latticinio ribbons, radiating from a complex cane center. Diameter 2 1/4". $ 1200-1800 53. Antique Saint Louis pink double clematis paperweight, over clear ground. The flower’s petals center around a dark-blue and white floret cane. Three variegated leaves seem to hold the blossom in embrace. Diameter 2 9/16". $800-1200

Milk-glass and opaline glass were excep tionally popular at this time, so the use in a Clichy design of this creamy coloration was certainly met by an approving clien tele. “Whether woven to celebrate love, victory or merely beau ty, the millefiori garlands found in patterned spacing schemes are among the most graceful and delicate ornaments found in

The fancy cutting and milk-white ground accentuates the rose-red and snow-white blossoms, multiplying the little rondelles and their crowning leaves into a great climbing rose bush. “Ray Banford first became intrigued by the idea of mak ing paperweights after visiting the workshop of Adolph Macho, an elderly Czechoslovakian glass craftsman in Vineland, New Jersey. Ray had worked as an antique dealer for many years and often did business with paperweight makers Pete Lewis and John Choko.”—All About Paperweights. “B” signature cane. 146. Randall Grubb “Reflections” crystal cylinder sculp ture, ca. late-1990s, with pale pink flowers, blue forget-menots and white foxglove, all entwined in a pile of flecked stones. The composition suggests a meadow scene, and its size and shape suggest the direction Grubb would take into even larger encasements. “The creation of a Reflection demands a com plete dedication to the process unlike any that I have ever expe rienced. You reach a point in the artistic process where you for get about how much time it takes to make a piece, or how much physical pain you inflict on yourself to create it. The only important thing is to create the finished piece.” —Randall Grubb, “The Creation of a Feeling in Glass,” Glass Collectors Digest (Volume IX, No. 6). Height 3 9/16"; Diameter 3 3/16" (without stone base). $3000-4000 147. Signed and dated and signature cane. Height 3 1/4"; Diameter 3 7/16". $600-700 • 149. Victor Trabucco 1985 three-layered blue flower paperweight. Styled after the Classic-era flowers, the plump, multi-petaled, blue-satin flower could be a clematis, accentuat ed with a trio of buds, and emerald leaves all around the flowers face. Trabucco grows his flowers under a great deal of good glass, and this unadorned floral rests within a splendid high-dome presentation. Scratch signed and dated, and an unusual script “VT” behind a leaf, which appears to have been done at the torch, rather than a pulled cane. Diameter 3 15/16". $750-1200 150. In this “end-of-day” blend, the elusive signature and date canes seem to be showing themselves, but are twisted and jumbled-up to make precise dating very difficult. • 157. Paul Ysart three-dimensional coiled snake paper weight, decorated with green and orange dots, on green ground. With sparkling aventurine body, and an expression that could hardly be construed as malicious, this must be the least sinister-looking snake in paperweight history. An endear ing homage to the Classic-era, yet unmistakably from an artist who enjoys glasswork with personality. “PY’ signature cane on bottom, and a paper label. Diameter 2 13/16". $1100-1300 158. Diameter 2 7/8". $1000-1500 • 1 6 1 . Paul Ysart pink and red double clematis paper weight, encircled by a garland of cross and cog canes. “PY” sig nature cane. “The paperweights of Paul Ysart, from their incep tion through to the present day, have been met with an enthu siasm only equaled by that of the artist in creating them. In his exploration of the techniques and designs of the nineteenthcentury paperweight makers, he has resisted the creation of technically perfect but artistically stale reproductions. His modern paperweights have been an integral part of Scottish national identification with the decorative arts, a theme taken up by the Caithness and Perthshire glass companies today.” — Ysart Glass. Paul Ysart floral design paperweight, with a ring of spaced millefiori over a mottled cobalt blue transparent ground. A formal arrangement, notable especially for the flowers pleasing proportions and star cane stamen. Diameter 3 3/16". $800-1200 171. Paul Ysart, ca. late 1950s, early ’60s, millefiori butter fly paperweight, on “black” ground, giving the piece the appearance of velvet. I had no technical information about the process, except in the most general terms, and that added to the challenge. I also had people tell me that I could not do it—and that’s the wrong thing to say to me.” —Gary Scrutton,
