Brightly colored canes, including sil houettes of an elephant, monkey, bird, shamrocks, goat, flower, rooster, horse, and two dogs. A blanket of wildly different canes, compels the eye to try and identify each and every one. “‘Close’ millefiori refers to the close vertical packing together of the canes, like people in a dense crowd. The patchwork quilt of one hundred or one hundred and fifty canes in a close millefiori paperweight offers a sampling of many or most of the canes made by a factory, and treats the eye to an almost endless vari ety.” — Glass Paperweights o f the New-York Historical Society. The marbling on the butterfly’s wings is rich, its velvety, deep-purple body is well proportioned, and the anten nae are sensitively realized. It hovers just off-center from a splendid white wheatflower, with periwinkle dots on its fur rowed petals, and evenly matched, fanning leaves. • 3. Rare antique Clichy clematis bouquet paperweight, with overlapping, ribbed flowers in amethyst, pink-hued and salmon-pink to crimson shaded blossoms. Tight green sepals, wrap the companion buds, and copious leaves fill out the body, while a demure pink ribbon bundles the group. Clichy made far fewer bouquets than their competitors, and so this rare design is considered more valuable than the popular “candy” weights. This exceptional design makes the most of blending millefiori (the stamen), crimped glass (the leaves), and lampwork (the pleated petals) in a plush, fulsome arrangement of

5. Unusual antique, possibly Pantin, green strawberries paperweight, on clear ground. Pantin is associated with lampwork flowers, fruits and reptiles with wonderful dimensionali ty seen in few other antique weights. The berries show realistic dimpling and proportions, and the trio of green crimped leaves are gathered around a separated stem. Strawberries of this late 19th-c. era were known for their sourness, so the bright green hue we think of now as under ripe was likely common to palates then. The Pantin attribution is not as well substantiat ed as other French factories, partially because this glass house produced so few weights. Diameter 2 11/16". $3500-5000

Antique Baccarat bouquet paperweight, with a dazzling and rare floral group composed of a large, central, double clematis, surrounded by two Type-II pansies, a bud, and an opening rose bud of deep red petals. Baccarat distinguishes itself by using millefiori as details for the flowers’ stamen, but this composition is finer still for its exquisite and sensitive lampwork; plush pansy petals like wine-filled balloons, the rose and its clingy sepals a study of breathless, budding anticipation, and the broad pleated face of the clematis a center of energy, like a white flame. Antique Clichy concentric millefiori piedouche paper weight, with seven rows of assorted complex millefiori, a row of fifteen pink and green roses, a row of ten white roses, and a large pink and green rose in the center, within a basket of turquoise and white staves. Lot 105 • 8. Very rare antique dated Baccarat scattered millefiori in blue carpet ground paperweight. The Gridels stand out like bits of cruise ship party favors drifting on an ocean’s white-caps. The numerous silhouette canes include a dog, butterfly or moth, goat, bird (framed within two shamrocks), deer, squirrel, mon key, rooster, and pelican. • 1 0 . Antique Baccarat patterned millefiori shamrock and butterfly paperweight, containing four rows of complex canes around a central claret-colored cog cane. The center design is composed of claret and white millefiori, including a ring of seven green shamrocks framed in opaque white, with an outer circle of cobalt-blue, white and red arrow-head canes, with a spaced garland of single butterfly silhouette canes at the edge, all of it resting on tumbled, white latticinio. The six rarely seen shamrocks are quite large, as are the butterfly or “moth” canes around the perimeter. “These are weights of power and impact, whose design must have taken considerable thought.” — The

9. Rare antique Baccarat dated red carpet ground paper weight. Every Gridel cane is an excellent example of Baccarat’s menagerie, including the horse, cockerel, stag, monkey, ele phant and the moth (or butterfly). A fine white bird with shamrocks, and a complex whorl and hollow stave cane design, indicate the intense work that went into these compositions. “The carpet ground is the most sophisticated version of millefiori glass.” — Paperweights. • 1 1 . Rare antique Saint Louis all-over faceted mushroom paperweight, with white and blue floret canes at center, sur rounded by four rings of canes pulled down to a solid, rare, lime-green stem. The rather homely-named mushroom belies that these designs were among the most architectural of the concentric millefiori arrangements. The tuft is in tight forma tion, with well-matched complex canes, appearing like a fresh bouquet, with the outer rings all pulled down to a fine stempoint. This presentation is delightful, not only for its citroncolored ring of stave canes (with a delicate flower pattern inside, placed throughout the bouquet), but the all-over printies have one’s eye darting all about the surface. 12. Antique Bohemian overlay spaced concentric complex millefiori paperweight, in red, blue, green and white, on a cushion of white upset muslin with bits of blue and red filigree; red-over-white double overlay with all over circular facets. Diameter 2 7/8". $6000-8000 • 1 3 . Antique Baccarat carpet panel paperweight, made of complex canes in star, cog, and arrowhead designs. The shape resembles the outline of a flower, comprised of bundles of aqua tubes sheathed in white, the dense carpeting masks bits of brightly colored twists and filigree, that one can see through the bottom of the weight. Diameter 2 1/2". $7000-12,000 • 14. Antique Saint Louis dated concentric millefiori paperweight, with a white silhouette of a camel in the center. This response to Baccarat’s Gridel canes is, to quote Hollister, “a hyper-lumpy, rubber-kneed camel,” yet was surely appealing to clients who romanticized adventurers in the Far East and their fantastic creatures. Eighteen canes in an outer ring con tain the tiny silhouette of a dancing couple. In the magical world of glass, what may have began as a molded cane as large as the weight itself, has been pulled down so the lilliputian figures take up less than a millimeter. Signed and dated aSL1848”. “In the late 1930’s two Chicago friends, Mr. W. Russell Button and Mr. Alvin E. Bastian, acquired the former collection of the celebrated Mr. Oscar Wilde. 16. Rare antique Baccarat dated scattered Gridel canes on upset muslin paperweight. Gridel canes, including the faith ful dog, horse, goat, stag and cockerel make an appearance; as well as a ghostly white squirrel silhouette, cooing lovebirds, moth, and a white monkey cane facing off with a man with a staff. The canes are all bedded in lovely, clean tufts of latticinio, with some colored filigree here and there. Signed and dated “B1848”. Diameter 2 13/16". $3000-4000 17. Very rare antique Baccarat dated scattered millefiori on lace paperweight, with a central shamrock cane. A superior example of the craft, the cane designs offer very bold, complex millefiori faces, and they are all presented meticulously over the drifts of latticinio. This weight and its distinctive millefiori, may represent an influx of glass workers from Eastern Europe, bringing their sensibilities to the French factories. This design is notable for the absence of silhouette canes and the “1849” red date cane. The tumbled lace includes streamers of color (the yellows and other warm colors come off very well). 18. Antique Baccarat dated scattered Gridel canes on upset muslin paperweight. The usual silhouette suspects are on dis play: horse, squirrel, dog, stag, moth, cockerel and goat, as well as some avians with wildly different personalities—from a plucky white bird, a downcast duck (or goose), to an ethereal swan. The remaining complex millefiori all nestle in a tight cushion of lacey segments, with a few streamers of color throughout. Faceted. Signed and dated “B1848”. Diameter 3 1/16". $2500-3500 • 1 9 . Antique Baccarat dated close packed millefiori paper weight. Gridel silhouettes of a rooster, pheasant, dog, horse, stag, and lovebirds; picture canes of flowers, whorls (choufleur), shamrock, honeycomb, and five abstracted roses, with the fortress-style cane at center, and four, green, leaf-shaped sepals set in white. Diameter 3 1/16". $2000-2500 • 22. Antique Baccarat close packed millefiori mushroom paperweight, with blue and white torsade. The plume of canes is splendid, replete with pastel choufleur , clusters of crosses and stars, and one with leaf-shaped canes, suggesting an abstract rose. There are a great many cane designs visible under the mushroom top, which may not have been intended, but then again offer the collector more to enjoy on all sides. Evoking the ethereal, and the sym bolic lightness of being, the essential French butterfly adds a certain gravity to that era’s paperweights. • 24. Antique Saint Louis snake on jasper ground paper weight, featuring a coiled green snake with enormous paleblue eyes, on an unusual red and white jasper ground. Snake and other reptilians under glass, were popular motifs during this Classic era; examples can be attributed to Saint Louis, Baccarat and Pantin. Painted with accession number #1965464. Sale 6656, Important Paperweights: The Property o f the NewYork Historical Society, Lot 157 25. Very rare antique Saint Louis double fuchsia paper weight, with two slender blossoms in crimson and Persian blue. The flowers hang on green stems from a mauve branch, with two furled buds at the top, and three emerald leaves with an aventurine sheen. The arrangement sits on a white double swirl latticinio ground. It is unusual to find a fuchsia weight with two blossoms. Diameter 2 3/4". $3000-4500 • 26. Antique Baccarat wallflower and garland paper weight. The edges of the petals are banded in a deep, carmine red, and fold under, creating a multi-layered effect. The stamen features a row of arrows circling a star cane, and a tight bud

takes the place of one of the typical five leaves crowning the blossom. W ith a garland of alternating stardust/bull’s-eye and complex star canes, the piece is refined further by a star-cut base. Diameter 2 5/8". $4000-5000 • 27. Antique Baccarat faceted woodsman and dog sulphide paperweight, over translucent cranberry background. The detailed sulphide, which presents the great wolfhound in state ly, heroic profile, was part of a series of “hunting” images, over different grounds, and with elaborate cutting. Slight damage along the facets. Diameter 3 1/2". $3500-4500 • 28. Antique Baccarat faceted sulphide paperweight. The meditative figure of Joan of Arc is framed with graceful arcs of noble laurel leaves, and sturdy oak leaves and acorns. A green flash ground helps to quiet the mind. Perhaps Baccarat was playing to the sentiment of a French heart, counting on the stalwart visionary’s popularity to entice clients to buy their glass. Diameter 3 7/16". $3500-4500 • 29. Antique Baccarat interlaced trefoil garlands on a green flash ground paperweight. With its two different types of “whorl” canes, the Clichy-type tube of concentric rings, as well as the scroll-type known to be of Baccarat manufacture,

Established by Napoleon Bonaparte, for military and civil service, the Légion D H onneur is currently France’s premier order. The clear ground shows off the Baccarat canes like per fectly behaved doilies, and one can easily identify the arrow head motif in the center cluster. The pattern is linked in a reverse number 6 arrangement, to resemble a continuous loop. With its spare elegance, it is still worthy of a “letter-weight” connoisseur. Diameter 2 7/8". $650-1000

32. Antique Baccarat scramble paperweight, with a red and white bull’s-eye cane among segments of latticinio and filigree, in blue, red, green, yellow, coral and white. Diameter 3 1/8". $700-1000 33. A French cristallerie with a royal reputation could hardly find this design compelling enough to call finished, yet it most like ly came from the apprentice glassblowers’ hands, created to present as evidence of growing skills. • 36. Antique Saint Louis signed concentric millefiori paperweight, with a centrai dancing woman silhouette cane, surrounded by five rings of large canes. An interesting mix of bold, graphic canes, such as the outer ring of bull’s-eye canes, and the more complex ring featuring bundles of elaborate broad cross and hollow cog canes, surrounding elaborate crimped white flower shapes with red centers. The central silhouette cane illus trates an interesting effect of the Industrial Revolution and the

The leaves and flower stems come together in a bit of a twist, which is associated with Saint Louis floral lampwork (seen in nosegays, especially). This very duo may have been worn on the lapels and shawls of sup porters of Napoleon—a quiet floral statement of solidarity with the deposed Emperor. Because of all the Napoleonic inter est in violets, France became a leader in developing and culti vating new varieties of violets and pansies. “Pansy” in fact comes from the French, pensee, meaning “thought” or “senti ment.’’Diameter 2 15/16". $3500-5000 • 39. Antique Saint Louis looped millefiori garlands paper weight, with a propeller-shaped design of complex canes in alter-

nating loops of white and salmon, set on a turquoise blue ground. Saint Louis produced these to compete with the popular Clichy swirl weight, and ought to get high marks in creating the illusion of movement under glass. The garlands’ canes are well-placed, seeming to grow larger as they reach out to the edge of the dome. with a broad ribbon of cobalt blue, wrapping filaments of white glass. The air rings were created as the glassblower placed the tor sade. The light refracts inside these hollow spaces, imitating bright, liquid mercury. This is also the phenomenon with incrusted sulphides, and further contributes to the mystique of these crystal domes. Pieces of cullet inside, and minor chips and scratches around the facets. Diameter 3 1/4". $2250-3000

In flower language, the camomile is said to represent “energy in adversity.” The luminous pom-pon, from which the slender swirls of the latticinio emanate, is truly beautifully made. “Most pompons are virtuoso demonstrations of the seemingly miraculous level of technical ability attained by nineteenth-century glassworkers.” — Paperweights fo r Collectors. A slight tinge of blue accents the edges and the veins. Well-placed petals surround a large slice of butter yellow rod, representing the stamen. Surrounded by the cristalleries clear glass, the clematis seems to be suspended in time and space, unaffected by any century’s turmoil. Styled after the Classic-era flowers, the plump, multi-petaled, blue-satin flower could be a clematis, accentuat ed with a trio of buds, and emerald leaves all around the flowers face. Trabucco grows his flowers under a great deal of good glass, and this unadorned floral rests within a splendid high-dome presentation. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to refuse any and all bids. This is a mail/phone auction. To place a bid, fill out the enclosed form and return it by mail as soon as possible. Bids may also be placed by telephone, fax, email or on the web at www.pwAuction.com. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the winner. Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed.

Return Policy

Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final. The buyer must notify L. H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis. Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L. H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily, via phone, fax, email or web, to check on the status of their bids. If you fail to contact us, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us which lots you wish to drop.

Estimates provided reflect current trends. Use them as a guideline when placing your bids.

All initial bids must be in hand by 5 pm Pacific time on April 19, 2002. Bidding will continue until the winner of each lot is deter mined. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second high est bidder. L. H. Selman Ltd. has absolute discretion to settle any disputes.

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot gen erally will not be sold. In some cases L. H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a reserve. L. H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to place bids on behalf of the consignor up to the amount of the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L. H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the con signor has the right to recover consigned lots which do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Successful bidders will be invoiced for the total amount due at the auctions close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted. Successful bidders must pay a 10% commission on the hammer price of each item, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Shipping will be billed at cost, plus handling and insurance. Items will be shipped to domestic buyers via FedEx two-day air unless otherwise specified by the buyer, and to overseas buyers by air mail. The buyer will be charged for any increased costs in shipping, including postage, handling and insurance. Payment is due on receipt of invoice; after 15 days a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged. All checks must be drawn on U. S. banks. If payment is made by credit card, a sur charge will appear on the invoice at the following rates: American Express, 5%; VISA, MasterCard or Discover, 3%. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until the full price has been paid. 64
