Paul Jokelson 1905-2002 ith deep sadness and many fond memories, we are sorry to bid adieu to our dear friend and mentor Paul Jokelson. Paul passed swiftly and peace fully at his home in Scarsdale, New York, November 24, 2002, at the age of 97. Founder of the PCA (Paperweight Collectors Association), Jokelson is known to us for his lifelong enthusiasm and support for paperweights, and his trade mark wry sense of humor. He has been affectionately dubbed by his friends in the paperweight world as “The King of Paperweights,” partly because he sin gle-handedly sparked the renaissance of the art form in the 20th century. He will be profoundly missed.

W

Paul Jokelson was born in Dunkirk, France, on January 13, 1905. His parents were Russian immigrants, and he had two older sisters, Sonia and Renee. He grew up in a comfortable home, and was introduced early to the high-quality art and craftsmanship that were to attract him throughout his life. He was born with the “collecting gene,” starting with autographs, then first-edition books, and of course the paperweights which he treasured from the time of his first purchases at age 18. Paul lived a life of varied experiences that most of us could barely imagine. He remembered World War I, although he was only a child, worked in his fathers shipping line, started a magazine, drove race cars, and met many famous people, from Maurice Chevalier to Charles Lindbergh. He served in the French army in World War II, joined the underground when his name appeared on the Gestapo capture list, survived the evacuation at Dunkirk, sold grain internationally from Canada, worked on Wall Street in the New York Stock Market, developed a successful international import-export busi ness, and negotiated for a paperweight collection in Egypt, despite a revolution going on in the country at the time. He lived in France, England, Canada, and the United States, and was a world traveler throughout his life. Paul was a widower with one daughter, Florence, and met his second wife, Margaret, in Granville, France, in 1945. He had just finished training to become a director for UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Association), which helped displaced persons after WWII. Margaret was the American nurse assigned to his team. They worked together rebuild ing refugee camps and helping former prisoners reclaim their lives. Their daughter, Catherine, was born in New York in 1948, and she has always known that, despite the jokes, her mother was the great strength in her parents’ marriage, the one who gave her father the opportunity to be such an amazing and unique personality. As a young man in Paris, Paul began his love affair with paperweights with his purchase of the “Bird in the Nest” for about $25. After this first fascinating discovery in what was to become a lifelong quest, Jokelson went on to search for other paperweights in order to know more about them. But he found that after a one-hundred year hiatus in which glass paperweights fell out of vogue among collectors and glass artists, few paperweights were available, and no one knew how to make them. So in the early1950s, Jokelson persuaded the Saint Louis and Baccarat glass factories of France to re-invent the art form. They did, and thus began the subsequent rally among glass workers worldwide to pursue this most difficult of all the glass arts, evolving into the profuse and expansive art form it is today. Paul became the U.S. importer of all Saint Louis’ glass paperweight production, and remained active in this endeavor until his death. As founder of the PCA and president from 1953 to 1981, Paul promoted and advocated for artists and dealers, as well as collectors. He founded the PCA in 1953 with 75 members, publishing the first annual PCA Bulletin in 1954. He organized and hosted the biannual PCA Convention for many years— elegant events held at upscale hotels, bringing together artists, dealers, and collectors. He also wrote and published regular PCA newsletters from September 1965 until December 1980. — Lawrence Selman

Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects “Many people can draw or paint with a fair degree o f success, but how many can master the art o f the glassmaker? I have little doubt that, as people learn more about this fascinating art, they will join the ranks o f collectors... This popularity is just starting as more and more collectors are attracted to these delicate and lovely pieces o f crystal. ” —PAUL JOKELSON

1. Very rare antique Baccarat floral bouquet paperweight, containing a large salmon and white primrose-type flower, with flattened-tube petals. This salmon-colored flower is unusual for this type of floral bouquet paperweight. The cen tral primrose is surrounded by five smaller lampwork flowers of red, white, and blue, all with complex cane centers, and framed by buds and green leaves, on clear, star-cut ground. Six and one facets. In these floral groups, “The flowers may be arranged as a bouquet, or individual blossoms may be spaced in a big circle about a central blossom.. .Where the flowers in a weight are limited to red, white, and blue, the weights are commonly called tricolor in commemoration of the [French] Revolution of 1848—a likely notion, though unsupported by instances of dating.” — The E ncyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. posed “X” design in the stem is considered typical of Baccarat. (See A ntique French Paperweights a n d R elated Objects, p. 15) The leaves surrounding the forget-me-nots are of a brighter green than the bouquets others and show fine detail, and per haps suggest a committee of lampworkers, all contributing their best floral feature. Diameter 3 1/4". $13,000-16,000 3. Rare antique Clichy millefiori and lampwork blossom paperweight, with a stylized central flower, having three con centric rings of petals, the outer one in multi-hued purple, with inner rings of pale yellow and burnt orange, topped with brown. Between the layers of petals and the red and white complex cane center, rest two rings of ivory ruffles. The fanta sy flower blooms from a curved brown-and white-striped stem with a closed green bud and three dark green leaves, on a bed of double-swirl white latticinio. “Clichy was renowned for its inventive flower portrayals, no two of which are exactly alike.” — The Art o f the P aperweight: C hallenging Tradition. Diameter 2 3/4". $19,000-25,000 2. Rare antique Baccarat seven-flower bouquet paper weight, containing a central yellow pompon comprised of numerous C-shaped petals, with a central emerald and white arrow point and ruby star complex cane. Above the pompon is a cluster of three light blue forget-me-nots, each with a white stardust and turquoise bulls-eye. Then, three fantasy flowers, all of which exhibit a ruffled edge, two designed with arrow canes, and all of them centered with white stardust/bull’s-eye canes. The flowers are on entwined stems and framed by green leaves, over star-cut ground. Six and one facets. The superim

4. Very rare antique Clichy five-flower bouquet paperweight, of stacked lampwork and millefiori flowers, in purple, yellow, red, green, blue, and white, with dark green leaves framing each flower. A rich variety of lampwork petals surround complex cane centers, with the bottom pair of flowers having very small and almost hidden canes. The top blue and white bud consists almost entirely of a lengthened white stardust cane. A pink and white ribbon wraps around the stems. “Some fantastic flowers have petals fashioned from lengths of cane that have been sliced through lengthwise, exposing the interior of the cane, the petal tips showing the bisected cane ends, a remarkable feat and an

exercise of imagination that represents paperweight-making at its best.” — The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 2 13/16". $20,000-23,000 5. Antique Baccarat butterfly and double clematis paper weight, containing a marbled, multi-colored millefiori-winged butterfly, with a translucent purple body, hovering above a white double clematis flower, on a stem with a white bud and light green leaves, over clear, star-cut ground. Top facet and two rows of circular side facets. “Baccarat glassworkers adroitly flat tened millefiori canes to create the wings of their thrilling but terflies. These insects dazzle the viewer, the delicate archetypes of a vibrant imagination.” — The Art o f the Paperweight: C hallenging Tradition. Diameter 3". $4000-3500 6. Antique Baccarat sulphide footed paperweight, with a landscape scene of a hunter and his dog in a tree-lined field, on translucent ruby ground. Concave top facet and all-over geo metric side facets. “The Joan of Arc and the Hunter and Dog deserve special attention as perhaps the finest sulphides ever made. The workmanship recalls the best of Bohemian (or any other) engraving, and we have to look closely to see that this is no engraving cut through ruby glass to clear glass, but a sul phide in which each leaf and reed is delineated as if by the most skillful glass engraver, or silhouette artist using scissors and paper. The effect is uncanny. How such perfection was nearly always achieved is a mystery.” — The E ncyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3 3/8". $4000-5000 7. Extremely rare antique American Port Elizabeth mag num frit paperweight, featuring a large red, green, and blue pansy, on a curved stem with two green leaves, on powdery white ground. A spaced ring of small blue flowers accent a scal

loped brown border. There is some question whether these are truly American weights or if they were produced by the Val St. Lambert factory in Belgium. “But it must be remembered that a great number of Belgian glassworkers came to Southern Jersey to work in the glasshouses in the Millville area. It could be that those glassmen transplanted this Belgian free-hand frit tech nique to the Millville factories in America.. .As more of these frit examples come to light, further research may someday solve the enigma of their origin.” — Id entifying A ntique Paperweights: The Less Familiar. 9. Antique Clichy mushroom paperweight, with a close packed complex millefiori mushroom, in an outstanding array of colored canes, including a pink and green rose cane, a white and green rose cane, and a white rose cane, in a white stave basket on clear star-cut ground. Five and one facets. “[Clichy] cane colors are actually similar to those found in St. Louis and Baccarat, but cobalt blue is used sparingly, and opaque pink, brilliant deep aquamarine or medium thalo blue (not turquoise), warm cadmium green, ivory, lilac, and deep ruby or deep cherry red are seen in abundance, giving the weights a warmth and richness not found elsewhere. If Baccarat paper weights appear to be seen in shade, Clichy seem to be always in broad sunlight.” — The E ncyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. Diameter 3". $6300-8000

8. Antique Saint Louis six-flower garland paperweight, with a border ring of clematis and other flowers in cobalt blue, pink, and white, each blossom having five petals, a star cane center, and light green leaves, on clear ground. “These uncommon weights show a big circle of small flat bouquets, clematis, or other blossoms, or pansies, usually in clear glass.” — The E ncyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. (See Figs. 97, 98a, p.103 for similar illustrated examples.) Diameter 3 1/8". $4300-3300

10. Rare antique Clichy Rose and garland paperweight, with a trefoil garland of green and red millefiori, encircling a large, central, pink and green Clichy rose, and looped around six, spaced, complex pastry mold and floret canes, in pink, blue, turquoise, and white, on clear ground. “Whether woven to celebrate love, victory or merely beauty, the millefiori gar lands found in patterned spacing schemes are among the most graceful and delicate ornaments found in paperweights.” —Paperweights f o r Collectors. Diameter 3 1/16". $2750-3500

11. Rare antique Bacchus close packed complex millefiori paperweight, with canes in pink, red, blue, green, and white, including four Queen Victoria silhouette canes, and green oak leaf and acorn portrait canes. “Entirely apart from their rarity, their workmanship entitles them to be included in every col lection of any consequence. A collector would be justified in including a number if there were greater variety of design.” — A nnual B ulletin o f the PCA (1999). See also —A nnual Bulletin o f the PCA (1997), p. 15, Fig. 3, for a strikingly similar exam ple. Diameter 3 1/2". $8500-12,000 12. Very rare antique Gillinder concentric millefiori paper weight, with a central “EB” complex signature cane, encircled by five rings of assorted red, white, and blue canes, including a border ring of “EB” signature canes. The “EB” signature was probably for Edwin Bennett, who was Gillinders one-time partner. “It is difficult enough to find a Gillinder weight, let alone a signed one, mainly because Gillinder signature canes are considered nonexistent. But a newly discovered miniature weight containing an “EB” cane may be just that (see Fig. 32.1, p. 97). During 1863-1867, William Gillinder was associated with Edwin Bennett and operated under the name Gillinder & Bennett.” — The D ictionary o f P aperw eight Signature Canes. Diameter 3 1/16". $2000-3000 13. Very rare antique New England Glass Company nosegay on mushroom paperweight, with a central nosegay, composed of three cane flowers and four green leaves, over a concentric millefiori basket, with rings of canes in blue, white, wintergreen, and pink. “One must credit the American glassworkers for trying unusual designs. In what one hopes became a unique experiment, an artisan set the typical flat bouquet above a

mushroom-shaped grouping of straw colored rods, which ter minate at the top in fairly decent millefiori canes (see Figure 7.112, p. 154). Viewed from the top, the bouquet appears as if it were being sucked down into a whirlpool.” — The Boston & Sandwich a n d New E ngland Glass Companies. Minor chips in base. 15. Rare antique St. Mande close packed complex millefiori paperweight, with 18 roses, including all five of the St. Mande rose cane types, resting atop a basket of swirling pink and white staves. This high-domed presentation is characteristic of St. Mande’s mature period just prior to closing. This weight is illustrated in the 1999 A nnual Bulletin o f the PCA\ “There are also five varieties of rose canes: rose of collapsed pink and white tubes, rose of white and blue glass shards, a four-sided rose, rose with shaped petals, and the sunburst rose.” Diameter 2 5/8". $6000-8000

14. Rare antique St. Mande concentric millefiori paper weight, with five rings of assorted complex canes in blue, white and red, including a border garland of 33 white and green St. Mande shard roses. “Considering the short life of the Nocus [St. Mande] factory (1841-1837), it is amazing that its workers were able to create such a rich variety of millefiori canes.. .weights from this small company rival the excellence we see in the production of the major French factories.” — Identifying Antique Paperweights: The Less Familiar. 16. Outstanding antique Bohemian scattered millefiori paperweight, with a central horse silhouette cane, surrounded by assorted complex canes in yellow, blue, and white, and bits of colored filigree in blue, yellow, red, and green, on white upset muslin. “The Bohemian breed is most frequently found in a scattered millefiori weight with the cane set into white muslin (lace). This horse, full and well-proportioned like a fine Lipizzaner stallion, is usually white or black on a contrasting background and forms the centerpiece of a complex cane.” — The Glass M enagerie: A Study o f Silhouette Canes in Antique Paperweights. Part II: Modern Paperweights & Related Objects

121. Paul Stankard environmental botanical block sculp ture, with blue pine barren gentians, yellow loose strife, red raspberries, leaves, and curly stems, growing from light green moss-covered ground. White and tan roots with one “spirit” below ground. Two textured sides. With botanical blocks like this one, Stankard, “broke the mold of the traditional paper weight and asked it to extend its definition. His botanicals also required him to expand his repertoire of effects; no longer could his wondrous plants be manifested solely through their flowers. The vertical format now required Stankard to consider more fully their stems and root systems, to see the flower as only the crowning glory of a complex interweaving of elements.” —Annual Bulletin o f the PCA (1997). Signed/dated 1990. Height 4 7/8". $10,000-12,000

122. Paul Stankard “Lilac Environmental” botanical block sculpture, with several stalks of light purple lilac blossoms, brown branches, and green leaves, growing from a slice of sandy ground. Root system includes a “spirit” and tendrils with split pods exposing a red “earth flower.” A fine example of the “organic credibility” that Stankard strives for in his work, as the wildflowers above blend seamlessly with the root system below. “The roots, often realized in a range of monochromatic pale browns, served as a foil for the explosion of color atop them, and to Stankard these gangly roots became every bit as much of the plant as is its flower, in many ways bound to it as cause and effect.” —A nnual Bulletin o f the PCA (1997). Signed/dated 1991. Height 5 1/4". $10,000-12,000 123. 125. Paul Stankard compound bouquet paperweight, con taining three red St. Anthony’s Fire flowers, six blue forget-menots, buds, pale green leaves, and stems, on clear ground. This “classic” floral paperweight most likely dates from the late 1970s, as a similar bouquet from 1978 and another one fea turing a St. Anthony’s Fire flower from 1976 are both displayed in the book, Paul J. Stankard: H om age to Nature (pages 82 and 51). Thus, it would seem, creating the distinctive red petals of the St. Anthony’s Fire flower is just another species that Stankard has added to his repertoire. “Flower blossoms are Paul’s passion, and his specialty. Figuring out how to make dif ferent varieties, how to translate each flower’s particular intri cacies into the unforgiving medium of glass, has been at the core of his art for years.”— Paul J. Stankard: H om age to Nature. “PS” signature cane embedded in side. Diameter 3". $2250-3000 126. 141. Delmo Tarsitano butterfly paperweight, having yellow and blue millefiori wings, over an upright pink chamomile blossom with green leaves, on a cane ground of close concen tric pink, blue, and white complex millefiori, including fivepoint stars and turtle silhouette canes. This piece is rare and unusual in a number of respects. First, Delmo made very few cane-ground weights, only about 25. Of these, maybe six had butterflies. Also, these weights were produced in 1990-91, dur ing the last few years of his life, and the pink and blue color scheme of the canes as well as the painterly appearance of the butterfly suggests the possible influence of his daughter and fel low paperweight maker Debbie Tarsitano. This makes their shared “DT” signature cane, that appears here on the under side, all that more appropriate. Diameter 3 1/2". $5500-7000 142.
