Paul Jokelson 1905-2002 ith deep sadness and many fond memories, we are sorry to bid adieu to our dear friend and mentor Paul Jokelson. Paul passed swiftly and peace­ fully at his home in Scarsdale, New York, November 24, 2002, at the age of 97.

Founder of the PCA (Paperweight Collectors Association), Jokelson is known to us for his lifelong enthusiasm and support for paperweights, and his trade­ mark wry sense of humor. He has been affectionately dubbed by his friends in the paperweight world as “The King of Paperweights,” partly because he sin­ gle-handedly sparked the renaissance of the art form in the 20th century. He will be profoundly missed.

Paul Jokelson was born in Dunkirk, France, on January 13, 1905. His parents were Russian immigrants, and he had two older sisters, Sonia and Renee. He grew up in a comfortable home, and was introduced early to the high-quality art and craftsmanship that were to attract him throughout his life. He was born with the “collecting gene,” starting with autographs, then first-edition books, and of course the paperweights which he treasured from the time of his first purchases at age 18.

Paul lived a life of varied experiences that most of us could barely imagine. He remembered World War I, although he was only a child, worked in his fathers shipping line, started a magazine, drove race cars, and met many famous people, from Maurice Chevalier to Charles Lindbergh. He served in the French army in World War II, joined the underground when his name appeared on the Gestapo capture list, survived the evacuation at Dunkirk, sold grain internationally from Canada, worked on Wall Street in the New York Stock Market, developed a successful international import-export busi­ ness, and negotiated for a paperweight collection in Egypt, despite a revolution going on in the country at the time. He lived in France, England, Canada, and the United States, and was a world traveler throughout his life.

Paul was a widower with one daughter, Florence, and met his second wife, Margaret, in Granville, France, in 1945. He had just finished training to become a director for UNRRA (United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation Association), which helped displaced persons after WWII. Margaret was the American nurse assigned to his team. They worked together rebuild­ ing refugee camps and helping former prisoners reclaim their lives. Their daughter, Catherine, was born in New York in 1948, and she has always known that, despite the jokes, her mother was the great strength in her parents’ marriage, the one who gave her father the opportunity to be such an amazing and unique personality.

As a young man in Paris, Paul began his love affair with paperweights with his purchase of the “Bird in the Nest” for about $25. After this first fascinating discovery in what was to become a lifelong quest, Jokelson went on to search for other paperweights in order to know more about them. But he found that after a one-hundred year hiatus in which glass paperweights fell out of vogue among collectors and glass artists, few paperweights were available, and no one knew how to make them.

So in the early1950s, Jokelson persuaded the Saint Louis and Baccarat glass factories of France to re-invent the art form.

They did, and thus began the subsequent rally among glass workers worldwide to pursue this most difficult of all the glass arts, evolving into the profuse and expansive art form it is today. Paul became the U.S. importer of all Saint Louis’ glass paperweight production, and remained active in this endeavor until his death.

As founder of the PCA and president from 1953 to 1981, Paul promoted and advocated for artists and dealers, as well as collectors. He founded the PCA in 1953 with 75 members, publishing the first annual PCA Bulletin in 1954. He organized and hosted the biannual PCA Convention for many years— elegant events held at upscale hotels, bringing together artists, dealers, and collectors. He also wrote and published regular PCA newsletters from September 1965 until December 1980.

1. Very rare antique Baccarat floral bouquet paperweight, containing a large salmon and white primrose-type flower, with flattened-tube petals. This salmon-colored flower is unusual for this type of floral bouquet paperweight. The cen­ tral primrose is surrounded by five smaller lampwork flowers of red, white, and blue, all with complex cane centers, and framed by buds and green leaves, on clear, star-cut ground. Six and one facets. In these floral groups, “The flowers may be arranged as a bouquet, or individual blossoms may be spaced in a big circle about a central blossom.. .Where the flowers in a weight are limited to red, white, and blue, the weights are commonly called tricolor in commemoration of the [French] Revolution of 1848—a likely notion, though unsupported by instances of dating.” — The E ncyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights.

The workmanship recalls the best of Bohemian (or any other) engraving, and we have to look closely to see that this is no engraving cut through ruby glass to clear glass, but a sul­ phide in which each leaf and reed is delineated as if by the most skillful glass engraver, or silhouette artist using scissors and paper. Antique Clichy mushroom paperweight, with a close packed complex millefiori mushroom, in an outstanding array of colored canes, including a pink and green rose cane, a white and green rose cane, and a white rose cane, in a white stave basket on clear star-cut ground. Five and one facets. “[Clichy] cane colors are actually similar to those found in St. Louis and Baccarat, but cobalt blue is used sparingly, and opaque pink, brilliant deep aquamarine or medium thalo blue (not turquoise), warm cadmium green, ivory, lilac, and deep ruby or deep cherry red are seen in abundance, giving the weights a warmth and richness not found elsewhere. Rare antique Bacchus close packed complex millefiori paperweight, with canes in pink, red, blue, green, and white, including four Queen Victoria silhouette canes, and green oak leaf and acorn portrait canes. “Entirely apart from their rarity, their workmanship entitles them to be included in every col­ lection of any consequence. Very rare antique Gillinder concentric millefiori paper­ weight, with a central “EB” complex signature cane, encircled by five rings of assorted red, white, and blue canes, including a border ring of “EB” signature canes. The “EB” signature was probably for Edwin Bennett, who was Gillinders one-time partner. “It is difficult enough to find a Gillinder weight, let alone a signed one, mainly because Gillinder signature canes are considered nonexistent. But a newly discovered miniature weight containing an “EB” cane may be just that (see Fig. 32.1, p. 97). In what one hopes became a unique experiment, an artisan set the typical flat bouquet above a

mushroom-shaped grouping of straw colored rods, which ter­ minate at the top in fairly decent millefiori canes (see Figure 7.112, p. 154). This high-domed presentation is characteristic of St. Mande’s mature period just prior to closing. With botanical blocks like this one, Stankard, “broke the mold of the traditional paper­ weight and asked it to extend its definition. His botanicals also required him to expand his repertoire of effects; no longer could his wondrous plants be manifested solely through their flowers.

The vertical format now required Stankard to consider more fully their stems and root systems, to see the flower as only the crowning glory of a complex interweaving of elements.”

This “classic” floral paperweight most likely dates from the late 1970s, as a similar bouquet from 1978 and another one fea­ turing a St. Anthony’s Fire flower from 1976 are both displayed in the book, Paul J. Stankard: H om age to Nature (pages 82 and 51). Thus, it would seem, creating the distinctive red petals of the St. Anthony’s Fire flower is just another species that Stankard has added to his repertoire. “Flower blossoms are Paul’s passion, and his specialty. Delmo Tarsitano butterfly paperweight, having yellow and blue millefiori wings, over an upright pink chamomile blossom with green leaves, on a cane ground of close concen­ tric pink, blue, and white complex millefiori, including fivepoint stars and turtle silhouette canes. This piece is rare and unusual in a number of respects. First, Delmo made very few cane-ground weights, only about 25. Of these, maybe six had butterflies. Also, these weights were produced in 1990-91, dur­ ing the last few years of his life, and the pink and blue color scheme of the canes as well as the painterly appearance of the butterfly suggests the possible influence of his daughter and fel­ low paperweight maker Debbie Tarsitano. Paul Ysart, considered one of the most important contributors to paperweight making in the 20th century, apprenticed at the Saint Louis factory in France, and used that experience to refine his technique to a master level.

His millefiori canes, fine examples of which are displayed here, are simplifications of Saint Louis’ canes, but his dragonflies, in the view of expert Paul Hollister, “are similar to, but much bolder than the French, [and] are also better executed.”

To place a bid, fill out the enclosed form and return it by mail as soon as possible. Bids may also be placed by telephone, fax, email or on the web at www.pwAuction.com. In the case of tie bids, the earliest bid received will be the winner. Bids may be raised until the lot is declared closed.

Return Policy Upon the close of each lot, purchase is understood to be final.

The buyer must notify L. H. Selman Ltd. of any discrepancy within 48 hours of receipt. All items have been carefully selected and described, but if you feel a lot has been misrepresented, requests for return will be handled on an individual basis.

Returned merchandise will not be accepted without prior approval. In no event will L. H. Selman Ltd. incur liability beyond the purchase price of an individual lot.

After the last day to place initial bids, we expect bidders to contact us daily, via phone, fax, email or web, to check on the status of their bids. If you fail to contact us, you may be relinquishing your opportunity to raise your bid. Help us complete the auction in a timely fashion by informing us which lots you wish to drop.

Estimates provided reflect current trends. Use them as a guideline when placing your bids.

All initial bids must be in hand by 5 pm Pacific time on April 25, 2003. Bidding will continue until the winner of each lot is deter­ mined. All lots will be sold at one increment over the second high­ est bidder. L. H. Selman Ltd. has absolute discretion to settle any disputes.

A reserve is a confidential minimum price below which a lot gen­ erally will not be sold. In some cases L. H. Selman Ltd. has agreed with the consignor to accept a reserve. L. H. Selman Ltd. reserves the right to place bids on behalf of the consignor up to the amount of the reserve. Bids below reserve may be considered null at the sole discretion of L. H. Selman Ltd. In this event, the con­ signor has the right to recover consigned lots which do not reach the minimum price reserved.

Successful bidders will be invoiced for the total amount due at the auctions close. Unsuccessful bidders will not be contacted.

Successful bidders must pay a 10% commission on the hammer price of each item, plus applicable tax and shipping fees. Shipping will be billed at cost, plus handling and insurance. Items will be shipped to domestic buyers via FedEx two-day air unless otherwise specified by the buyer, and to overseas buyers by air mail.

The buyer will be charged for any increased costs in shipping, including postage, handling and insurance.

Payment is due on receipt of invoice; after 15 days a 2% per month penalty on monies owed will be charged. All checks must be drawn on U. S. banks. If payment is made by credit card, a sur­ charge will appear on the invoice at the following rates: American Express, 5%; VISA, MasterCard or Discover, 3%. Purchases will not be shipped to the buyer until the full price has been paid.
