Part I: Antique Paperweights & Related Objects “The lure o f the paperweight intensifies upon being handheld. Through its lens-like dome, its design is enhanced, revealing details intuitive to the practiced eye. The collector and student o f glass become tuned to subtle variations in color, form, pattern and glass clarity— just as the scholar perceives nuances in poetry, literature, art and music.” — Geraldine J. Casper

The Encyclopedia o f Glass Paperweights. “Clichy had been founded only in 1839. During the brilliant but limited period of its independent existence, it excelled repeatedly in taking up glass technological challenges, even those which were beyond strict commercial needs. ...(T )he glass technological achievements characterize the Clichy glass
works and its owners, who had tried to pioneer as Bontemps had done, as capable of combining reserach and production, a daring task of one without the secure commercial background which a big factory offered. This general attitude of Clichy leads me to the assumption that they might have been the first ones to offer convincing paperweights.” — Paperweights.

“The classic period of paperweight manufacture is generally considered to have extended from 1840 to 1860. The idea of paperweights as a saleable art form is thought to have been introduced in 1845 at the Austrian Industrial Fair in Vienna, where Pietro Bigaglia of Venice, one of a long line of Muranese glassworkers, displayed his wares. Although some weights may have been manufactured previously in France, it is believed Bigaglias weights may have stimulated the development of sophisticated paperweight manufacture in France.”

“Among the most sought-after paperweights from these facto ries are pieces containing red, white and blue single flowers and floral bouquets with poinsettias, clematis blossoms and pansytype bloom known as the weedflower. Like the United States’ flag, these brilliant stylized blooms were created to symbolize the ideals America was built on.” — The New England Antiques Journal (July 1994).

The most famous dynasty in Bohemia was the family of Riedels. In the Silesian part of Riesengebirge it was the fam ily of Preusslers who had the greatest glassmaking traditions. For these, stylistic criteria and millefiori cane designs must be used for attribution. For those pieces containing a signature cane, two different canes were used. The first was an ‘H’ cane representing the place of manufacture, Harland. This cane was used in his standard pro duction paperweights from 1971 to 1979. The second signa ture cane used was the well-known and at times illegitimately copied ‘PY’ cane. After 1955, the ‘PY’ cane was reserved for the limited edition paperweights sold in the United States by Paul Jokelson. ...Ysart originally made his signature cane by bundling together thin upright rods of differently colored glass es to form the design.” — The D ictionary o f Paperweight
