th e au sti n sym Ph o ny o r c h e stra Jam e s c. ar m str o n g yo uth e d u cati o n e n d owm e nt participating schools. in 2019–20, the aso has received a fifth year of funding from the nea to continue our connecting with music initiative in partnership with aisd. this is a semester long thematic, interdisciplinary learning initiative around the concert repertoire. at the culmination of the project, students share original works based on the theme. youth P rogra ms

n Sarah & ernest Butler texas Young composers competition & concert a statewide competition for young texas composers; selected compositions are featured in an aso concert at the long center’s dell hall. sch ool Pr ogr ams— curricu lu m-b ased

n Building Blocks of the Orchestra aso musicians introduce instruments of the orchestra and elements of music to students in grades k–3: Performances and demonstrations provided by aso string Quartet, woodwind Quintet, brass Quintet, Percussion, and harp. n Young people’s concerts (Ypc) full-orchestra concert for students grades 4 to 6 from aisd, round rock isd, other area districts, and private schools. during the concert live images of the musicians are projected on a screen behind the orchestra along with images related to the concert theme. learning resources are created in collaboration with aisd teachers and distributed to attending schools. the program is interdisciplinary, connecting music with other subject areas and disciplines. the theme for 2019–20 is “artistic intent.”

n halloween children’s concert an engaging and entertaining music concert that is suitable for kids 2–10 years of age. n austin Youth Orchestra partnership features master classes, sectionals, side-by-side, and chamber music coaching n Musical Mosaics, austin Symphony Orchestra chamber Music Series aso chamber ensembles perform a series of themed concerts throughout the season at the central library, austin library branches, and austin recreation centers. concerts are held in february, June, and september.

n austin Symphony Orchestra children’s Day art park is a series of free interactive public concerts for families with children performed by aso ensembles in collaboration with local guest artists at the central library, with n high School concerts additional performances at branch libraries. annual high school tour to five high the performances engage children as they schools by the full orchestra, serving enjoy a musical tale followed by activities. approximately 4,000 students; thematic and interdisciplinary in approach; the theme n Student rush tickets for 2020 is “musical transcendence: 20 minutes prior to performance, tickets resisting oppression.” the high school are sold for $5.00 with current student id. concerts program features a side-by-side for band and orchestra students from Visit austinsymphony.org for details.

Maestro peter Bay Peter bay became music director and conductor of the austin symphony orchestra in 1998. he is also conductor of the big sky classical festival orchestra (mt). maestro bay has appeared with more than 80 different orchestras including the national, chicago, st. louis, houston, dallas, baltimore, new Jersey, north carolina, san antonio, tucson, west virginia, colorado, hawaii, sarasota, fort worth, bochum (germany), carinthian (austria), lithuanian national, and ecuador national symphonies, the minnesota and algarve (Portugal) orchestras, the louisiana, buffalo, arizona, rhode island and boca del río (mexico) Philharmonics, the saint Paul chamber orchestra, the eastman (Postcard from Morocco) and aspen (the Ballad of Baby doe) opera theaters, and the theater chamber Players of the kennedy center. summer music festival appearances have included aspen and music in the mountains (co), grant Park and ravinia (il), round top (tX), ok mozart (ok) and skaneateles (ny). in June 2018 he led performances of leonard bernstein’s Mass as part of the bernstein100austin celebration. Peter is the primary conductor for ballet austin. for austin opera he has conducted A streetcar named desire, la traviata, turandot, the Marriage of figaro, and la bohème. other positions held by bay have included music director of the erie Philharmonic, annapolis symphony orchestra, breckenridge music festival (co), britt festival orchestra (or), hot springs music festival (ar), and posts with the rochester Philharmonic orchestra. saint Paul chamber orchestra, and richmond symphony. bay and the aso with pianist anton nel released a critically acclaimed bridge cd of edward burlingame hill’s music. with the richmond symphony he recorded the united states premiere of britten’s the sword in the

stone for opus one records, and with the rochester Philharmonic orchestra voices, featuring the percussion ensemble neXus. he is conductor for christopher cross’ secret ladder album and hanan townshend’s soundtrack to the 2016 film, the Vessel. in 1994, he was one of two conductors selected to participate in the leonard bernstein american conductors Program. he was the first prize winner of the 1980 baltimore symphony orchestra young conductors competition and a prize winner of the 1987 leopold stokowski competition sponsored by the american symphony orchestra. in July 2012 he appeared in solo symphony, a choreographic work created for him by allison orr of forklift danceworks. he was inducted into the austin arts hall of fame in may 2016. Peter is married to soprano mela sarajane dailey and they have a son, colin.

Au sti n sym ph o ny o r c h e strA g u e s t a rt i s t Bernard holcomb tenor bernard holcomb has “already made a name for himself in the world of opera” with his “delicate and flexible” voice (opera Wire) and the “appealing sweetness and clarity [of] his tone” (new york times). katy walsh of Chicago theater Beat stated it best: “although everyone [at lyric opera of chicago] can sing, holcomb reminds us why we come to the lyric.” this season, mr. holcomb makes his début with the dallas symphony orchestra as a soloist in dancing in the street: the Music of Midtown and More; performs as a soloist in lush life: duke ellington and Billy strayhorn with austin symphony orchestra and the florida orchestra, and in oregon symphony’s presentation of An African American requiem; sings for broadway artists connection’s cabaret benefit and performs the role of sportin’ life in Porgy and Bess with harrisburg symphony. this past summer, mr. holcomb returned to seattle opera to perform in their production of rigoletto, returned to long beach opera for the world prémiere of the Central Park five, and performed in Porgy and Bess in italy with new york harlem Productions. recent débuts include his alaskan début as captain leadbetter in the world prémiere of emerson eads’ Princess sophia with Project orpheus, his carnegie hall début, his title role début in rossini’s otello in new york city, and his début at semperoper dresden in Porgy and Bess. other recent engagements include the role of lechmere in owen Wingrave with little opera theater of new york, his return to seattle opera to perform the role of borsa in rigoletto, his performance as a soloist in gershwin’s Blue Monday with on site opera. in recent seasons mr. holcomb has performed with sphinx connect, as a soloist in christian de grè’s twisted operettas at Joe’s Pub, Poul ruders’ the thirteenth Child with santa fe opera at the guggenheim

museum in new york, and BMP: next Generation with beth morrison Projects. additionally, mr. holcomb made his return to chicago opera theater as tristan in frank martin’s le vin herbé, and was featured as a soloist with renée fleming and sir Patrick stewart in second City’s Guide to the opera. an alumnus of the lyric opera’s Patrick g. and shirley w. ryan opera center, bernard performed such roles as ernesto in don Pasquale and rodolfo in la bohéme. during his lyric tenure, mr. holcomb appeared in the main stage performances of strauss’ elektra, verdi’s simon Boccanegra, donizetti’s don Pasquale, offenbach’s les contes d’hoffmann and covered major roles in massenet’s Werther, wagner’s die Meistersinger von nürnberg, and verdi’s rigoletto. as part of the young artist program at sarasota opera, bernard appeared in main stage performances of Pagliacci, the Crucible, l’amico fritz, and i lombardi. at the end of the program, he was awarded the anne o’donnell award, given to an outstanding apprentice. on concert and recital stages, mr. holcomb’s credits include a concert performance of la bohéme with civic orchestra of chicago, holiday Pops concerts with the new hampshire symphony orchestra, a concert performance of die Zauberflöte with the rochester Philharmonic orchestra, and augustus hill’s exegesis with the detroit symphony orchestra, beethoven’s symphony no. 9 with macon symphony orchestra and the illinois Philharmonic, and mozart’s requiem with the dekalb festival chorus. a winner of the metropolitan opera national council auditions (michigan district), this detroit native currently resides in new york city, has earned a master of music degree from the university of michigan, and a bachelor of music degree from the eastman school of music. collegiate operatic credits include lensky in eugene onegin, lyric tenor in A Postcard from Morocco, ruggero in la rondine, rodolfo in la bohéme, and Jenik in the Bartered Bride.
