Welcome Welcome to Austin Opera’s 2017-2018 Season! We’re thrilled to launch our season of celebrated operas and vibrant productions with perhaps the most well-known opera of all time, Bizet’s Carmen. The music of Carmen has permeated popular culture since the opera’s debut in 1875, from cartoons and singing oranges on Sesame Street to commercials for everyday household products. We are honored to welcome some of our most celebrated artists back to Austin to bring these beloved melodies to life: Mezzo-soprano Sandra Piques Eddy, who most recently was a disarming Isabella in 2010’s L’italiana in Algeri and a radiant Angelina in 2008’s La Cenerentola TGVWTPU VQ WU KP VJG ƂGT[ TQNG QH Carmen. Tenor Chad Shelton, another mainstay of the company whose recent triumphs include Edgardo in 2012’s Lucia di Lammermoor and Alfredo in 2010’s La traviata, returns as Don JosÊ, the solider who eventually succumbs to obsession and madness. Austin Opera also has a longstanding commitment to providing careerforging opportunities to opera’s brightest emerging stars, and we’re excited to introduce you to Norman Garrett, a native of Lubbock, Texas who makes his Austin Opera debut as the toreador Escamillo, and Heather Phillips, an accomplished young soprano who makes her Austin Opera debut as MicaÍla. Joining us in the role of El Dancaïro is Andrew Lovato, Austin Opera’s 20172018 Spotlight Artist. In addition to performing in all three operas this season, Mr. Lovato will also help us bring opera beyond the opera house in a number or recitals, school programs, and community events. As powerful as Carmen’s music is, opera still relies on masterful storytelling. Austin Opera is delighted to welcome back director Michael Cavanaugh, who helmed our 2014 production of Tosca and our 2001 production of Faust. His new, vivid production sets the story in Spain 100 years after the opera’s debut, illuminating thought-provoking parallels between the two centuries. Finally, I’d like to extend my most heartfelt thanks to the sponsors who have made these performances and this new production possible. Philanthropy funds everything you see on stage, and we continue to be humbled by the tremendous acts of generosity that enable our work. We are dedicating the 2017-2018 Season to Jeanette and Ferris Nassour, whose extraordinary legacy gift last spring will support Austin Opera’s continued growth in the years to come. Enjoy the performance!

Program Note MICHAEL CAVANAGH, STAGE DIRECTOR A Boogie Nights Carmen After Franco’s death, a dangerous, intoxicating era of freedom In the fall of 1975, Spain was released from 40 years of oppressive rule by the dictator Francisco Franco. There was a great deal of upheaval as Spanish society came to terms with its re-entry into the modern world. The ascent of King Juan Carlos brought relaxed restrictions on travel, trade, standards of morality, and artistic freedom. This was thrilling to some and horrifying to others. There were protests, an increase in crime, and acts of terrorism as many in the population fought to retain the old ways. But there was also a massive outpouring of relief and joy and exhilaration, as an energized people celebrated their newfound liberty. 5GVVKPI QWT RTQFWEVKQP KP CPF CTQWPF 5GXKNNG QFF [GCTU CIQ KU C RGTHGEV Ć‚V HQT VJKU DGCWVKHWN powerful, and harrowing opera. Meanwhile, the military and police struggled with losing their grip on civil order. This is paralleled by Don JosÊ’s spiral into derangement, brought on by his inability to accept the freedom of the woman he professes to love. $WNNĆ‚IJVKPI CPF EKICTGVVG UOQMKPI DQVJ KORQTVCPV CURGEVU QH VJG PCTTCVKXG YGTG UVKNN JWIGN[ RQRWNCT KP 5RCKP CV VJCV VKOG 5OWIINKPI VQQ YCU CP GPQTOQWU RCTV QH VJG ĆƒQWTKUJKPI underground economy. It was an era of wonderfully colorful fashion as well, of course, and the clothing styles of the ‘70s—equal parts vibrant, sensual, and over-the-top—are matched by the mix of musical styles in the opera. Much of this opera’s great popularity stems from its combination of light, fun opĂŠra-comique and dark, dangerous verismo. 6JCPMU VQ VJG KPVGPUG QHVGP ITKVV[ Ć‚NOU QH VJG n U UWEJ CU The French Connection and Taxi Driver, and, more recently, the evocations of the same era such as American Hustle and Boogie Nights, we think of the culture of that time in the same way as so many view this opera, as a uniquely powerful combination of kitschy, sexy, and dangerous. 6JG UEGPKE GNGOGPVU QH QWT RTQFWEVKQP GODTCEG VJG ĆƒCXQT QH VJG GTC CU YGNN 6JG CTEJKVGEVWTG is stylized, with clean, spare lines to emphasize the severe psychology of the piece. There are tall towers and curved walls, suggestive of a prison coming apart, the clash of femininity and machismo, the push and pull of order and freedom. As the story progresses, a rough, natural form emerges, hinting at the unpredictable danger to come. And always there is color, with bold statements in deep red, blue, and yellow. There is a great nostalgia for the 1970s these days; it seems to have been a time of energy, excitement and possibility. In newly free Spain, particularly, newfound notions of personal freedom were seen as exhilarating, intoxicating, and often scary. Just as in the opera itself, however, while some people embraced their freedoms, some resisted them, and others—tragically—were driven to acts of desperation and horror.

ACT I In Seville by a cigarette factory, soldiers comment on the townspeople. Among them is MicaĂŤla, a peasant girl, who asks for a corporal named Don JosĂŠ. Moralès, another corporal, tells her he will return with the changing of the guard. The relief guard, headed by Lieutenant Zuniga, soon arrives, and JosĂŠ learns from Moralès that MicaĂŤla has been looking for him. Jeanette & Ferris Nassour—A Lasting Legacy Jeanette and Ferris Nassour were devoted to making Austin a more vibrant city through their support of the arts. As long-time Austin residents and founding members of Austin Lyric Opera, the Nassours were generous supporters, sponsoring many productions over the years and devoting their time and talents as members of the Austin Opera Guild. One of Jeanette’s greatest talents was her exceptional eye for beautiful things—making her the perfect party planner and hostess. Over the years, with her dearest friend Ellen King, she served as Co-VP of Special Events for the Guild, co-chairing Season Opening Night Dinners, the Opera Ball, and the Divas, Dinners & Diversions series. She also participated in Annual Fund phone-a-thons and Guild membership drives, and she served on the President’s Council committee, helping to grow this important group of opera supporters. Ferris, in his kind and gentle way, was always by her side, lending support and encouragement. “Jeanette and Ferris always greeted me with warmth, a smile, and laughter. It was impossible not to feel embraced by their generosity of spirit,” says Richard Buckley, Principal Conductor and The Sarah & Ernest Butler Artistic Director. Jeanette and Ferris Nassour’s support during their lifetime helped make Austin Opera the successful company it is today. Austin Opera is extremely humbled that the Nassours chose to leave the company they loved a lasting legacy through an incredible estate gift of more than $1.7 million, the largest contribution ever received by the company. “This profound act of generosity will enable Austin Opera to fund innovation and expansion in our programming scope over the next several seasons to engage with Austinites in entirely new ways,” says Annie Burridge, General Director & CEO of Austin Opera. It is Austin Opera’s privilege to dedicate the 2017-2018 Season to Jeanette and Ferris Nassour, and to permanently name the pre-opera dinners The Jeanette Nassour Opening Night Dinner Series.
