Programs

The Austin Symphony James C. Armstrong Youth Education Endowment Concerts program features a sideby-side for band and orchestra students from participating schools. In 2017–18, the ASO has received a third year of funding from the NEA to develop, in partnership with AISD, a semester long learning initiative around the concert repertoire. At the culmination of the project, students share original works based on the theme.

The Arbor Series is a non-profit organization benefitting the Austin Symphony Orchestra

The YLC is celebrating another successful year of dynamic programming for exceptional high school students—the leaders of tomorrow!

On September 17, YLC members were inspired by former UT and NFL football player, Cory Redding. Winner of the 2013 ed Block Courage Award and the Indianapolis Colts’ 2012 Man of the Year, his Cory Redding Foundation provides educational opportunities for low-income and at-risk students.

On October 22, the YLC was honored to welcome Cecilia Abbott, our cherished First Lady of Texas. She discussed her focus on service, culminating in the creation of her “Texanthropy Initiative” to promote volunteerism.

2018 launched with two remarkable YLC guest presenters. Long-time voice of NewsRadio KLBJ, Ed Clements, spoke of his career in entertainment and his tireless activism on behalf of Alzheimer’s research. Mr. Clements was joined by Beau Armstrong—Chairman, President, and CeO of Stratus Properties, and a nationally-recognized pioneer in environmentally sustainable building and responsible land stewardship.

Our final guest for the 2017–18 program series was internationally renowned recording artist Andrew Heller, named the 2015 Breakthrough Artist of the Year

by New Music Weekly. Mr. heller is also a former IBM Fellow and president of IBM’s Business Unit.

On April 14, the members of the Youth Leadership Council will be recognized at a special pre-concert reception for their participation in a year of tremendous personal growth and community service. One outstanding senior YLC leader will be awarded the $500 Book Scholarship Award.

Membership is open to all Austin area high school students in 9th–12th grades.

These free ensemble concerts take place at the Hartman Concert Park in front of the Long Center City Terrace and will run on Sunday evenings from June 3rd through August 26th at 7:30 p.m. Each Sunday a different ensemble of the Austin Symphony will be featured at the Hartman Park, located on the front lawn of the Long Center for the Performing Arts, performing music from jazz and light classical to pops selections and film scores. Concertgoers are encouraged to bring a picnic dinner and blanket and make it a group outing.

Music Director

Maestro Peter Bay Peter Bay became Music Director and Conductor of the Austin Symphony Orchestra in 1998. He is also Music Director of the Hot Springs Music Festival (AR), and Conductor of the Big Sky Festival Orchestra (MT).

Maestro Bay has appeared with 80 different orchestras including the National, Chicago, St. Louis, Houston, Dallas, Baltimore, New Mexico, New Jersey, North Carolina, San Antonio, Syracuse, Tucson, Virginia, West Virginia, Colorado, Hawaii, Jacksonville, Richmond, Sarasota, Alabama, Arkansas, Canton, Eugene, Fort Worth, Springfield, Chattanooga, Bochum (Germany), Carinthian (Austria), Lithuanian National, and Ecuador National Symphonies, the Minnesota and Algarve (Portugal) Orchestras, the Louisiana, Buffalo, Rhode Island, Tulsa, Fort Wayne, Reno, Las Vegas, and Boca del Rio (Mexico) Philharmonics, the Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, the Eastman (Argento’s Postcard from Morocco) and Aspen (Moore’s The Ballad of Baby Doe) Opera Theaters, and the Theater Chamber Players of the Kennedy Center.

Summer music festival appearances have included Aspen (CO), Music in the Mountains (CO), Grant Park and Ravinia (IL), Round Top (TX), OK Mozart (OK) and Skaneateles (NY).

Peter is the primary conductor for the ASO’s performances with Ballet Austin. He made his Austin Opera debut in January 2002 with André Previn’s A Streetcar Named Desire, and conducted La traviata in November 2002, Turandot in November 2003, and The Marriage of Figaro in April 2005.

Other positions held by Mr. Bay have included Music Director of the Erie Philharmonic, Annapolis Symphony Orchestra, Breckenridge Music Festival (CO), Britt Festival Orchestra (OR), and posts with the Rochester Philharmonic

Orchestra, Saint Paul Chamber Orchestra, and the Richmond Symphony in Virginia.

Bay and the Austin Symphony Orchestra with pianist Anton Nel have released a critically acclaimed CD of Edward Burlingame Hill’s music on the Bridge label. Gramophone magazine states “The performances advocate brilliantly for Hill. Bay and his Austin players are crisp and warm in the symphony, and they collaborate with pinpoint vitality with pianist Anton Nel.” With the Richmond Symphony he recorded the U.S. premiere performance of Britten’s The Sword in the Stone for Opus One Records. Voices, featuring the percussion ensemble NEXUS and the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra, is available on the Nexus label.

A native of Washington, D.C., Mr. Bay is a graduate of the University of Maryland and the Peabody Institute of Music. In 1994, he was one of two conductors selected to participate in the Leonard Bernstein American Conductors Program.

He was also the first prize winner of the 1980 Baltimore Symphony Orchestra Young Conductors Competition and a prize winner of the 1987 Leopold Stokowski Competition sponsored by the American Symphony Orchestra in New York. In July 2012 he appeared in Solo Symphony, a choreographic work created for him by Allison Orr of Forklift Danceworks. Peter can be seen conducting the Barton Strings in the “Christopher Cross and Friends” PBS broadcast and DVD recorded at the Moody Theater. He conducted the Hanan Townshend score for the 2016 film “The Vessel.”

Peter was inducted into the Austin Arts Hall of Fame in May 2016. He is married to soprano Mela Dailey and they have a son Colin.

Guest artist Olga Kern

Russian-American pianist Olga Kern is now recognized as one of her generation’s great pianists. She jumpstarted her U.S. career with her historic Gold Medal win at the Van Cliburn International Piano Competition in Fort Worth, Texas, as the first woman to do so in more than 30 years.

First prize winner of the Rachmaninoff International Piano Competition at age 17, Ms. Kern is a laureate of many international competitions. In 2016 she served as Jury Chairman of both the Seventh Cliburn International Amateur Piano Competition and the first Olga Kern International Piano Competition, where she also holds the title of Artistic Director.

Kern serves as Artist in Residence to the San Antonio Symphony’s 2017–18 season, appearing in two subscription weeks as well as solo recital. She will also perform with Madison Symphony, Rochester Philharmonic, Copenhagen Philharmonic, Austin Symphony, New Mexico Philharmonic, Arizona Musicfest Orchestra, Colorado Symphony, and Hawaii Symphony Orchestra. Ms. Kern will premiere her first American concerto— Barber’s Piano Concerto with the Detroit Symphony Orchestra under the baton of Leonard Slatkin. She will give recitals at the University of Arizona, the Lied Center in Lincoln, Nebraska, the Sanibel Music Festival in Sanibel, Florida, and abroad in Mainz and Turin. Additionally, Ms. Kern will perform in the Huntington Estate Music Festival with Musica Viva in Australia.

In addition to opening the Baltimore Symphony’s 2015–16 centennial season with Marin Alsop, Kern has appeared with the Royal Philharmonic, Orchestre Philharmonique de Nice, Rochester Philharmonic, Orchestre National de Lyon, and the San Antonio, Detroit, Nashville, Madison, New Mexico, Austin, and NHK symphonies.

She has toured South Africa with the Cape and KwaZulu Natal Philharmonics, and Israel with the Israel Symphony. As an avid recitalist, she has appeared in solo and collaborative recitals at Carnegie Hall, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Symphony Hall in Osaka, Salzburger Festspielhaus, Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Tonhalle in Zurich, Chatelet in Paris, Van Wezel Hall in Sarasota, 92nd Street Y, Meany Hall in Seattle, and the University of Kansas’ Lied Center.

Ms. Kern’s discography includes her Grammy®- nominated recording of Rachmaninoff’s Corelli Variations and other transcriptions (2004), Brahms’ Variations (2007) and Chopin’s Piano Sonatas Nos. 2 and 3 (2010). She was featured in the award- winning documentary about the 2001 Van Cliburn Competition, The Cliburn: Playing on the Edge.

Notes on the program Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky (1840–1893) Piano Concerto No. 3 in E - flat Major, Op. 75 Composed 1893 (approx. 16 minutes) Tchaikovsky never really wrote a third piano concerto.

In the spring of 1892 he started to write a new symphony in E-flat Major, but by the fall he realized it was going nowhere and told his friends that he had destroyed it because “there is nothing particularly interesting or symphonic in it. I decided to throw it away and forget about it.” It was only through the urging of his nephew Vladimir Davydov that he did not consign it to the fire.

But by next summer he decided to use the material for a third piano concerto. He worked on the first movement, finishing the orchestration in October 1893. He still had some serious doubts about the result, considered it “overlong” and thought of issuing it as a one-movement Allegro brilliante. He also sent it to Sergei Taneyev, a composer and brilliant pianist, for evaluation. Taneyev liked it but considered it not virtuosic enough so he fiddled with it.

Two weeks later, before he could do anything with it, Tchaikovsky was dead of cholera. The movement was published posthumously in 1894 as Piano Concerto No. 3. Taneyev reworked two more movements left in sketches from the discarded symphony, trying to create a complete concerto, but his attempt, published as Op. 75, never caught on.

In his last works, Tchaikovsky seems to have had a penchant for the low register of the orchestra. His Sixth Symphony begins with probably the most dismal introduction in the repertory, a mournful bassoon, bass and cello theme; the Third Piano Concerto also opens with two bassoons, accompanied by timpani, tuba and cellos, but with considerably more energy. The Concerto is all about rhythmic contrast between syncopation and metrical regularity.

Tchaikovsky’s first ballet, Swan Lake (1877), was a revolutionary work. Its intensely dramatic score was so demanding for choreographer, dancers, and orchestra that from its premiere, music from other composers was increasingly substituted for Tchaikovsky’s original score. The ballet itself was dropped from the repertoire after 1883 and was only revived in 1895, two years after the composer’s death, and even then in modified form.

By 1888, however, with the composer’s reputation now firmly established, such shabby treatment would have been unthinkable. The Imperial Mariinsky Theatre in St. Petersburg commissioned The Sleeping Beauty, promising Tchaikovsky a lavish staging financed by no less a patron than Tsar Alexander III himself.

The plot, based on a French 17th -century fairytale, was the work of the director of the Imperial Theatre and consists of a Prologue and three Acts. It offers a combination of high drama, “pure dance,” and character pieces.

In 1941, Igor Stravinsky made chamber orchestra arrangements of four excerpts from the ballet, including the “Bluebird” Pas de deux from the third act. Sergei Prokofiev (1891–1953) Piano Concerto No. 1 in D-flat major, Op. 10 Composed 1911 (approx. 16 minutes) Sergei Prokofiev was a composer caught between two cultures.

Born into an affluent and musical family, he left the Soviet Union in the summer of 1918, shortly after the 1917 revolution. For the next 18 years he toured the United States and lived in Paris, then in the mid -1930s returned to his native country, never to leave again.

This is “my first more- or- less mature composition, both in conception and realization,” Prokofiev wrote about his First Piano Concerto. Composed in 1911 while he was still a student at the St. Petersburg Conservatory, and premiered in the following year, the Concerto marked Prokofiev’s first public performance with orchestra. Its spiky dissonances and unromantic tone clashed with the taste of the prevailing musical establishment, and the critics and audience were sharply divided in their opinions. Two years later Prokofiev defied his teachers in using the Concerto—rather than an established work from the repertory—to win the coveted Anton Rubinstein piano prize. The composer commented cynically that most of the 20 judges would be unfamiliar with the work and would, therefore, be hard-pressed to judge his performance. The conservative Alexander Glazunov, who headed the Conservatory, was furious, commenting that to promote such compositions would only encourage “harmful trends.”

The Concerto is in one continuous movement, but in three distinct sections, similar to Liszt’s concertos. Like many 19th century works, it is also cyclical, the opening theme serving at the end as the closing theme of the entire work. The thematic structure shows the composer’s fondness of wide leaps and angular melodies that he deliberately conceived to demonstrate his pianistic prowess.

Today, 90 years later, the music sounds quite tame.

Sergei Rachmaninoff (1873–1943) Symphony No. 3 in A Minor, Op. 44 Composed 1935–36 (approx. 38 minutes) The premiere performance of Rachmaninoff’s First Symphony took place in St. Petersburg in 1897. It was a dismal failure, in large part due to the shoddy conducting of Alexander Glazunov, who was drunk.

The disappointment brought on a severe depression, and for three years Rachmaninoff was unable to do any significant composing. Finally, in 1900 he went for therapy and hypnosis to Dr. Nikolay Dahl. The result was one of the first well-known successes of modern psychotherapy. Rachmaninoff was able to return to creative work, resulting in his Second Piano Concerto, which he dedicated to Dahl. Relapses into depression dogged Rachmaninoff, however, for the rest of his life. Significantly, all his large instrumental compositions, as well as most of the rest of his oeuvre, are in minor keys.

Rachmaninoff refused to publish the failed symphony, only acknowledging its existence by calling his next one, composed in 1906‑‑‑07, “No. 2.” It took him nearly 30 years to premiere his Third Symphony, composed in 1935–36, with his favorite orchestra, the Philadelphia Orchestra under Leopold Stokowski.

It was more than his reluctance to write symphonies that caused the long gap between symphonies, With a well‑established reputation as composer, conductor and pianist, Rachmaninoff left Russia in December 1917 with his family, having lost all his property in the revolutionary upheaval. With a family to

Notes on the program support, he resigned himself to life as a full-time career pianist, leaving little time to compose. The Third Symphony is one of the few works he composed after settling in the West.

This Symphony is to some extent a departure from the late-Romantic language of its predecessors. Except for the first movement, which is quite accessible both melodically and formally, the composer’s lush themes and flowing melodies are significantly attenuated. Instead, the musical language is more austere, chromatic and dissonant, also revealing Rachmaninoff’s interest in the qualities of individual instruments. One idiosyncrasy of the Symphony is an abrupt change in tempo and the introduction of new music about halfway through every movement, where the composer goes off on a musical digression—a fast one in the middle of the slow movement, and a slow one in the middle of the allegro movements.

The Symphony disappointed the audience and critics, who had expected another “Second.” The lukewarm reception at the premiere, in turn, disappointed the composer, who felt misunderstood. He wrote to a friend after the premiere that the Philadelphia Orchestra played wonderfully. “…both audience and critics responded sourly. Personally I’m convinced that this is a good work. But—sometimes the author is wrong, too! However, I maintain my opinion.”

A short motto introduced pianissimo at the opening recurs as a unifying gesture in all three movements—although often greatly disguised. The principal themes are similar in mood and rhythm, although the second represents the works “big tune.” The motto reappears in the brass and later in the strings, also ending the movement on a subdued note.

The second movement is a combination of a slow movement and a scherzo at its center. It opens with a variant of the motto on a French horn, accentuated by the harps and with a prominent role for solo violin. Suddenly the tempo quickens and the Scherzo starts with a quick march-like

transformation of the motto. The reprise of the opening Adagio is shorter and concludes with a variant of the motto.

The finale opens energetically with a series of rapid key changes, setting up the expectation for one of Rachmaninoff’s broad melodies, but he again disappoints.

After the obligatory fugue and recurrences of the motto, the movement finally arrives at a hint of Rachmaninoff’s personal signature, the “Dies irae” from the Gregorian Mass for the Dead.

As a crackling storm rolls into Cyprus, we are introduced to a trio of figures, each based on Shakespeare’s iconic characters: the victorious naval warrior Otello, his faithful wife Desdemona, and his trusted officer Iago. But soon after the rain subsides, the duplicitous Iago preys upon Otello’s insecurity and suspicion by hatching a plot to have Otello question Desdemona’s fidelity, unleashing a passionate tempest of gale force, with powerfully tragic results.

This thoughtful tale of personal and political jealousy is a rarely performed masterwork that will leave Austin audiences breathless.

A World Apart, A Moment Together One World & TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation Connecting Central Texas Military Families One World’s innovative performing arts summer camp program provided scholarships through TRIAD funds of the San Antonio Area Foundation to give kids the opportunity to be a part of the musical production of “Wizard of Oz.” When the campers took the stage every parent, no matter where they were located, including Iraq was able to see their child perform.

Using amazing video technology generously provided by a partnership with LifeSize Communications, seven military bases were connected to One World Theatre, so that parent and child could see, talk and interact with each other as if they were in the same room. After the performance, each child and their family was given the opportunity to talk privately with their loved one, keeping the bond of family alive across the miles.
